RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Bernard Lubbert of Riceville, Iowa, were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville. Interment was held in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Bernard, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for LaVonne Thompson of Riceville, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. Interment will be held in LeRoy Cemetery in LeRoy, Minnesota at a later time.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville handled the arrangements.

LaVonne, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013 at the Riceville Family Care Center in Riceville.



Rosaline Polashek, 85

CEDAR RAPIDS - Funeral services for Rosaline "Rosie" L. Polashek of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Phil Thompson officiating.

Visitation was held 4:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cedar Rapids with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m., followed by Florence Nightingale Tribute and a Scripture Service at 7 p.m.

An additional memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin where she lived with her husband, Jerry Polashek for 22 years. Interment will be held in Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Rosaline, 85, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids.

Rosaline Louise Polashek was born Aug. 22, 1927, the daughter of Louis John and Lillian Emma (Hosek) Trubl on their farm five miles west of St. Paul, Nebraksa. She attended Stony Point one room country school through eighth grade and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1945.

On Oct. 9, 1946, she married Gerald Emil Polashek at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The couple lived on Jerry's parents' farm near Protivin; then in Protivin; next on Rosie's parents' farm near St. Paul, Nebraksa; and finally again in Protivin. They spent the following years raising 11 children, with Rosie working off and on with her husband in his butcher shops. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids in 1969 where Jerry died in 1973 when his car was struck by a train. Rosie raised eight children on her own while working as a nurse for many years, earning her RN in 1976, retiring in 1992, and moving to a condo in 1993. Since July 2010, Rosie resided at Garnett Place and Northbrook Manor care facilities.

Rosie was a member of the Protivin American Legion Auxiliary (county president), Linn County Farm Bureau Women's Chorus, American Business Women's Association (membership chair) and Iowa Nurse's Association. She was also a 4-H leader/assistant, Girl Scout leader/assistant and a volunteer at Mercy and St. Luke's Hospitals. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids and later a charter member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hiawatha. At St. Pius, she was a member of Dominic Club, All-Church Singles, church choir, card clubs, Bingo volunteers, Pieta group and St. Anne Group. At St. Elizabeth, she was a member of the regular and guitar choirs.

She loved growing roses and often took them to church or shared them with others. Rosie enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, gardening, crocheting, knitting, sewing, bowling, singing, dancing and Czech music. She earned the Iowa Farm Bureau Mother of the Year Award in 1986.

Rosie is survived by her 11 children: David of Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, Cathy (Steve) Berry of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Mary (Bill) Cummings of Cedar Rapids, Eloise (Paul) Whiffen of Tomakin, NSW, Australia, Betty Weaver of Cedar Rapids, Susan (Daniel) Martinek of Cedar Rapids, Martha (Michael) Shoemaker of Norwalk, Emil (Mary Kay) of Ames, Carol (Jon) Thompson of Mundelein, Illinois, Tony (Gail) of Shamong, New Jersey, and Francis (Dina) of O'Fallon, Missouri; 27 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry in 1973; two infant sons: Jerry in 1951 and William in 1953; her parents: Louis in 1973 and Lillian in 1986; an infant brother, sister, Lydia in 1973.


 
LuAnn Wyant, 47

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for LuAnn Wyant of Riceville, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Father Steve Garner officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

LuAnn, 47, died suddenly Monday, Jan. 28 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

LuAnn Wyant was born Sept. 21, 1965 the daughter of Marion and Marilyn (Werner) of Lamont, Iowa. She worked on the farm with her family. She and her family moved to Riceville. LuAnn graduated from Riceville High School in 1984. She was employed at the Riceville Community Nursing Home for 15 years as a dietary aide and cook.

She enjoyed going shopping, going to jewelry parties, Pampered Chef parties, taking care of little pigs on the farm, and little puppies. She was a member of the St. Anne's Rosary Society and the Riceville American Legion Auxiliary.

She has a special puppy named Trixie who was her pride and joy. LuAnn enjoyed working with flowers, going to flower auctions, and was very knowledgeable of the different flower varieties.

She is survived by her mother: Marilyn; her sister: Debbie at home; her brother: Larry (Teri) of Cresco; her brother: Jeff (Cathy) of Plainfield; her sister: Julie (Brad) Carlson of Rochester, Minnesota; and her brother: Doug (Shari) of Riceville.

She was preceded in death by her father: Marion in 2004; grandparents: William and Helen Werner of Independence; grandparents: William Wyant and Ethel Lane; and nephew: Patrick Douglas Wyant.



June Wilkins, 90

CRESCO - June Wilkins, 90, of Cresco, Iowa died Sunday, Jan 27, 2013 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where she had been a resident. Private services were held with burial in New Oregon Cemetery, rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled arrangements.

June Wilkins was born Nov. 20, 1922, the daughter of William and Ida (Knopf) Duneman. She attended rural grade and public high schools.

On April 9, 1942, she married Roger J. Wilkins. They farmed until 1977. Roger passed away Nov. 9, 1977. June remained on the farm until the fall of 1978 when she moved to Cresco.

Survivors include a son: Wayne R. (Charlene) Wilkins of Ottawa, Illinois; a grandson: Lee (Tisha) Wilkins of Peru, Illinois; great-grandchildren: Jake Walter and McKenzie Hamer of Peru, Illinois; her brother: Bernard Duneman of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico; her sisters-in-law: Viola Gesell of Cresco and Rene Duneman of Simi Valley, California; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers: Leonel Duneman, Robert Duneman, Marvin Duneman, his twin brother Melvin (who died in infancy); and her sister: Berniece Baer.



Charles Shaver, Jr., 84

CRESCO - Funeral services for Charles "Chuck" B. Shaver, Jr. of Cresco, Iowa, were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at the funeral home.

Charles, 84, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin

Charles B. Shaver, Jr. was born Dec. 25, 1928 in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Charles and Violet (Heller) Shaver. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1947.

On Sept. 4, 1950, he married Elvira Enright. Chuck was a farmer and later had his woodworking business, Shaver's Woodshavings. They traveled throughout the tri-state area selling crafts.

He enjoyed coon hunting in his younger years and always loved his dogs. He was a hard worker and after retiring he spent many hours working in his garden and taking care of his home and lawn. His latest interest was brewing beer and wine. Chuck also enjoyed his daily bike ride of 10-12 miles.

Chuck and Elvira enjoyed traveling, making new friends, spending time with their family, going for rides and just spending quiet times together.

Chuck is survived by his wife: Elvira; daughters: Deb, Pam, Susie, and Patty; and their 10 grandchildren: Tyler, Joey, Amy, Titia, Nick, Megan, Shena, Corey, Josh, and Angie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Doyle; and his uncle: Fred.


Harlan Middlebrook, 88

CRESCO - Harlan D. Middlebrook, 88, of Cresco, Iowa lost his battle with Alzheimer's on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. He had been a resident at the Evans Memorial Home since July 2008. He and his wife Wilda had moved to Cresco Assisted Living in 2005, having previously lived on their farm northeast of Cresco for sixty years.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. A Memorial Service followed at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco.

Harlan David Middlebrook was born Jan. 16, 1925 in Johnson Country, Arkansas. He and his parents, Roy and Della (Adkins) Middlebrook, moved to northeastern Iowa in 1928, working for various local farmers until they purchased their first farm in Winneshiek County in 1944. In 1942 he graduated from Cresco High School, where he had met Wilda Lorraine Jacobson. They married on June 3, 1945.

Most recently, Harlan and Wilda have been members of the Zion Methodist Church on Golden Ridge.

He is survived by his wife, Wilda; four sons: Kevin, Rodney, Steven, and Boyd; and eight grandchildren: Jeb, Lindsay, Lia, Drew, Hanna, Mariel, Arianna, and Sophie.

Harlan was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Melissa Kay in 1949; and his father (1989); and mother (1993).



Bernie Phillips, 74

SPILLVILLE - Bernie Phillips, 74, of Spillville, Iowa died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian.

Bernard Jerome Phillips was born Aug. 23, 1938, on the family farm near Spillville, the son of Jerome and Julia (Frana) Phillips. He attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School and graduated from Calmar High School in 1956.

On Sept. 7, 1959, he married Lois Stevens at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They farmed on the family farm north of Spillville for many years. Bernie enjoyed collecting all kinds and makes of tractors, as well as toy tractors, reading, going to dances, playing practical jokes, and socializing in town. Above all, Bernie loved his family and spending time with them.

Bernie was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, where he was a lector, usher and served on the parish council. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Lois Phillips of Calmar; three daughters: Brenda (Keith) Kreitzer of Decorah, Beth (Art) Perry of Waucoma and Brooke (fiance, Brent Frana) Phillips of Johnston, Iowa; two sons: Bradley (Lori) Phillips of Decorah and Bruce (Wanita) Phillips of Calmar; 13 grandchildren: Nathan and Cory Farley, David Kreitzer, Lukas, Trevor and Jarod Phillips, Sara, Jalisa, Tanner and Abby Phillips, Bobbi Jo and Brock Perry, and Kaylie Widen; one great-grandson: Beardon Farley; one sister: Marcella Soukup of Calmar; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lowell (Sandee) McLain, of Spring, Texas, Darryl (Marie) McLain of Cannon Falls, Minnesota and John Wenthold of Hayfield, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law: Earl and Vada (Roney) McLain; brothers and sisters-in-law: Marvin Soukup, Sr., Milton and Ruth Stevens and Colleen Wenthold.



Barbara Opat, 54

CRESCO - A Memorial Mass for Barbara "Barb" L. Opat of Cresco, Iowa, was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with a Parish Scripture service held at 6 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to services at the church.

Barbara, 54, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Barbara Lynn Opat was born March 13, 1958, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Marcelline and Loretta (Anderson) Phillips.

On Oct. 9, 1976, she married Mark Opat at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah.

Barb was a very giving person that was easy to be around. Her effortless gift of putting other people first was reflected in different parts of her life. From being an RN at Covenant Medical Center, or always cheering for the underdog, to being a second mom to her children's friends, and swimming with her grandchildren. She loved to be around people. Barb enjoyed going to the river and fishing, trips to the casino, sewing, and making crafts. She always looked forward to her "Sister's Weekend" and taking cruises. Her latest one was to Alaska. Barb was an exceptional Grandma. Her grandson's brought great joy to her life.

Barb is survived by her husband: Mark of Cresco; her daughter: Amanda (Mike) Bergan of Cresco, and their children: Landen, Ethan, and Noah; her son: Jeremy (Jessica) Opat of New Berlin, Wisconsin, and their son: Garrett Edward; siblings: Peter (Karen) Phillips of Schueyville, Iowa, Patty (Fred) Axmear of Decorah, Mark (special friend Barb) Phillips of Marion, Iowa, and Marcia (Lance) Radeke of Vinton, Iowa; mother-in-law: Jannette Opat of Cresco; brother-in-law: Mick (Lori) Opat of Bluffton, Iowa; sister-in-law: Jodene (Jeff) Van Dyke of Rochester, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews; and special friend: Alex Trouten of Schley, Iowa.

Robert Vagts, 93

HARMONY, MINNESOTA - Funeral services for Robert M. Vagts of Harmony, Minnesota will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Granger, Minnesota with Pastor Linda Helberg officiating.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, one hour before services at the church.

Robert, 93, died peacefully following a short illness on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at home surrounded by family.

Robert Martin Vagts was born June 20, 1919 in Albain Township, Howard County, Iowa, the son of Paul and Marie (Jensen) Vagts. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa and confirmed there on May 28, 1933.

On May 27, 1941, he married Caroline Michel at her parents' home near Granger, Minnesota, officiated by Pastor Leo Moench, a personal friend of the groom. They began farming east of Cresco. In March 1948, they moved to their farm near Bristol Center, Minnesota where they continued to farm throughout his life eventually farming with two of his sons, Jim and Bob.

Robert and Carol moved to Harmony in 1971, never really retiring from the farm. They moved to Heritage Grove in 2002, two of the first residents of the new facility. Robert's lifelong loves were his family, his church and farming. He was active in all aspects of congregational life at St. Matthew in Granger, including serving as chairman of the building committee for the new church structure in 1954. While his life was farming, fishing in Canada was a real passion that he shared with family and friends.

He is survived by five children: Jim of Harmony, Bob (Margaret) of Lanesboro, Jerry (Valerie) of St. Paul, Ken (Sharon) of Hastings and Joann (Terry Grabau) of Chisago City; 14 grandchildren: Mark, Todd and Carrie (Jim); Kim, Michelle and Angie (Bob); Rachel, Amalia, Thatcher and Paul (Jerry); Tom, Chris and Mike (Ken); Yvette (Joann); 21 great-grandchildren; and his brother: Gareth of Cresco.

Robert was preceded in death by Carol, his wife of 69 years; his parents; two daughters-in-law: Judy (Thorson) Vagts (Bob) and Diane (Jacobson) Vagts (Jim); and a sister-in-law, Geneva Vagts.


Duane Douglas, Sr., 65

CRESCO - Funeral services for Duane L. Douglas, Sr. of rural Cresco, Iowa, were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013 at Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saude with Pastor Dan Larson officiating. Interment was held in Saude Lutheran Cemetery in Saude with military rites by the Alta Vista VFW Post # 4069.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Duane, 65, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 at his home with family gathered around him.

Duane Lee Douglas, Sr. was born Sept. 17, 1947 in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Gwendolyn (Kahn) Douglas. He was a 1965 graduate of Nashua High School. After graduation Duane enlisted in the Marine Corps and served until Sept 1969 as a UH-34D and CH-46 Helicopter crew chief. During that time he served 27 months in Vietnam with HMM 164. While in Vietnam, he received the Purple Heart, Air Medal with 5 stars, Combat Air Crew wings with 3 stars and Good Conduct Medal.

On Sept. 20, 1969, he married Brenda Kay Wade of Richlands, North Carolina. From 1970 to 1986, Duane and his family farmed in Chickasaw and Howard counties. He was employed at TriMark in New Hampton for 31 years, retiring in 2009.

Duane enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards with his family.

Duane is survived by his wife, Brenda; six children: Duane (Michelle) Douglas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Michael Douglas of Novi, Michigan, Steven (Smia) Douglas of Arlington, Virginia, Belinda Ehrig of Cresco, Sarah (Joel) Cox of Evansdale and Adam (Jess) Douglas of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren: Desiree, Devin, Crystal, Dylan, Chance, Destiny, Kayla, Natalie, Grace, Jordan, Warren, Jade, Kaitlyn, and one on the way; his brothers and sisters: Helen Nosbisch of Waterloo, Gloria Parks of New Hampton, Louis (Karen) Douglas of Waterloo, Reuben (Carla) Douglas of Denver, Norma (Tim) Shea of Dodge City, Kan., Nancy (Tim) Bathke of Tripoli and Angela (Chuck) Diesburg of Ionia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Bernard and Dennis Douglas; and three brothers-in-law: Bill Nosbisch, Donald Parks and Gary Piper.

Robert Reicks, 76

PRESTON, MINNESOTA - Memorial services for Robert "Bob" Reicks of Preston, Minnesota, were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at St. Columban Catholic Church in Preston.

Visitation was held an hour prior to services.

Celebration of life followed at the Serviceman's Club in Preston. Robert, 76, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Rushford.

Robert Reicks was born Dec. 28, 1936 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Edward and Viola (Reinhardt) Reicks. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1955.

On Oct. 11, 1958, he married Grace (McCabe) in Harmony. They moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he worked in a meat packing facility. In 1964 they moved to Minneiska, where he was a meat cutter. In 1965, he moved to Preston, where he operated the locker plant. Then he worked in Chatfield at Drew's Frozen Foods and Huckstadts and then returned to Preston to work at Dahl's IGA Food Liner, operate the B&B Olympic Bowl, work at Gehling Auction Co., and become the school bus driver. In 1989 Bob and Grace moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where he was employed by Walmart. After Grace's death in 2003, he returned to Preston, and continued to work at Walmart as a greeter until 2011.

Bob enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, going to casino and visiting with friends.

Bob is survived by his children: Kevin (Lisa) Reicks, Kelly (Robert) Doherty, Kurt (Brenda) Reicks, and Kimberly (David) Black; two sisters: Joanne (Jim) Fisher of Spillville and Sharon (Carroll) Gossman of Canton, Minnesota; three brothers: Gene (Peggy) Reicks of Spillville, Donnie Reicks of Belmond, Iowa and Keith (Nadine) Reicks of Lourdes, Iowa; seven grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.



Dean Garrett, 92

CRESCO - A funeral Mass for Dean R. Garrett of Freeport was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Msgr. Thomas Dzielak officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Freeport.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. A Rosary was held at 3:30 p.m.

Dean, 92, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 at Liberty Village of Freeport after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final days.

Dean R. Garrett was born Feb. 17, 1920 in Elma, Iowa, the son of Dewey W. and Ida M. (Huber) Garrett. He and his wife of 67 years Georgia Hinton were married there on July 1, 1943 while he was on leave from the Navy.

Dean graduated from business college in Mason City, Iowa, completed his Bachelor degree in education at the University of Iowa in Iowa City in 1951. A lifelong learner, Dean then received his Master's Degree in Counseling from Northern Illinois University in 1966.

A 35 year veteran of the Freeport School District, Dean began his career in 1951 when he accepted his first teaching position at Freeport Senior High School. The first year he taught both speech and debate, then moved to the Freeport Junior High where he taught English, speech and drama classes and helped start the children's theater group in the school. In 1962 he moved into the FJHS counselor's post, became associate principal for one year and in 1968 became principal of the FJHS, a position he held for 15 years. His final years with the Freeport School District were as Superintendent of Instruction until his retirement at age 67 in 1987.

He was a member of Kiwanis Golden K at the time of his death and had spent his career in Freeport serving on many boards and committees for the betterment of the community. He was particularly proud of the work he was able to do with the area Literacy Council.

Dean was a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 and was a frequent public speaker on the subject. He continued to serve as President of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association of Northern Illinois until the time of his death. On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941 Dean was a young hospital corpsman assigned to the surgical unit of the hospital at Pearl Harbor. Later assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Minneapolis he was involved in all major South sea battles until 1945.

Dean and Georgia are remembered for their beautiful ballroom dancing. Many weekends were spent with friends dancing at every opportunity throughout northern Illinois and Wisconsin. They also traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico and the United states, including lengthy stays in Hawaii, Fort Meyers and South Padre Island where they golfed and socialized with many friends from Freeport. At age 90 Dean took the first of two trips to Ireland where he visited relatives in Castleblayney, County Monahan which is where his great-grandmother had immigrated from in 1849. In later years Dean also discovered that his ancestors were among the first 100 families to settle in Freeport in 1845.

Dean was the much loved patriarch of five generations of family living in the surrounding area. He is survived by one son: Thomas (Nancy) Garrett of Janesville, Wisconsin; two daughters: Patricia Clary of Freeport and Janet (Joe) Cerra of East Aurora, New York; grandchildren: Danielle (Bob) VenHuizen of Stockton, Emily Carroll of Mission Viejo, California, Clayton (Sharon) Garrett of Wanaka, New Zealand, Patrick Cerra of East Aurora, New York and Carly Cerra of Buffalo, New York; great-grandchildren: Amanda Melvin of Shannon and Samuel VenHuizen of Stockton, Kyle (Abby) VenHuizen of Kenosha, Wisconsin; great-great-grandson and granddaughter: Wyatt and Sawyer VenHuizen of Kenosha, Wisconsin; nieces: Joy (Stark) Weakland of Colorado and Ann (Foss) Geister of Minnesota; and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Georgia; his parents; and two sisters: Geraldine Foss and Alice StArkansas

A memorial has been established in Dean's memory.


Merrynell Rolland, 78

MESA, ARIZONA - Merrynell "Nell" Rolland, 78, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 at Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa from heart failure.

Merrynell Rolland was born Aug. 29, 1934, the daughter of Ray and Madge Farnsworth. She attended school in Cresco. She graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa with a degree in Business Education. While at Luther she met and married Ralph Rolland on June 9, 1957. They had four children: Brian (Roxanne) Rolland of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Brent (Sandy) Rolland of Clear Lake, Iowa, Rich Rolland of Key West, Florida and Nancy (Pat) Jorgensen of Vinton, Iowa.

They lived in several towns in Iowa including Eagle Grove, Stanhope, Jewel, Clarion, Vinton and Lisbon. After Ralph's retirement from education, they moved to Mesa, Arizona during the winters and would return to Iowa during the summers to spend time traveling, visiting friends and family. Nell was a third generation member of PEO, active in both athletic and band boosters while her children were involved in those activities and an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

Nell had an amazing love for her 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers and memorials the family requests that a special act of generosity to your own grandchildren be given to celebrate how special they make life.

Reuben Bartels, 95

ROCHESTER, MN -Funeral services for Reuben C. Bartels of Rochester, Minnesota were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester with Rev. Dr. Norman Wahl officiating. Entombment was held in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes in Rochester handled the arrangements.

Reuben, 95, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at St. Marys Hospital surrounded by his family.

Reuben Carl Bartels was born September 14, 1917 in Elma, Iowa, the son of Paul and Wilhelmenia (Prinz) Bartels.

On July 26, 1939, he married Dorothy Zobeck at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs, Iowa. The couple had one child, a daughter, Gail. Reuben farmed until he and Dorothy moved to Rochester in 1962 where he became a cook at the Rochester State Hospital until his retirement.

Reuben was a veteran of the US Army, proudly serving his country during WWII. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge returning home with military honors including the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, American Legion, V.F.W. and the D.A.V. Reuben enjoyed reading, fishing, football, baseball, history, having coffee with friends; but above all he loved spending time with his wife, daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Reuben is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter: Gail Loucks of Rochester; grandchildren: Lisa (David) Loucks-Christenson, Brian (Katie) Loucks, Heather (Jim) Apple all of Rochester, Michael (Krista) Loucks of Charlotte, North Carolina; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Reuben was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Ruth Nolda; his son-in-law: Terry Loucks; and his granddaughter: Lauri Burt.

Raymond Langreck, 89

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond "Ray" H. Langreck of Cresco, Iowa, will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Heritage Events Center in Cresco with a scripture wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Raymond, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Raymond Herman Langreck was born Nov. 26, 1923, in rural Fayette County near St. Lucas, Iowa. He was the sixth of 11 children of John and Catherine Langreck, with three brothers and seven sisters. He attended St. Luke's Catholic School. He graduated from eighth grade with highest honors in his class, and then worked alongside his father on the family farm. They also ran a sawmill and did carpentry work.

At the age of 20 he enlisted in the Air Force but was assigned to the Army infantry. He served in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946. His service included combat operations to liberate the Philippines. He was part of occupation forces in Hiroshima. Using his carpentry skills, he led the rebuilding of an orphanage, sending blueprints to his father for approval. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, and four battle stars.

On April 1, 1948, he married Ruth Elizabeth Heying at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina, Iowa, by Ruth's uncle, Fr. Jerome Bohr. They would have celebrated their 65th anniversary this year. To their union 11 children were born. The couple first made their home in West Union and then in 1949 purchased a farm in Cresco that was destroyed by a tornado three weeks later. Ray and Ruth rebuilt the farmstead and were successful farmers. Ray won numerous awards including Outstanding Young Farmer and many Iowa and Howard County Master Corn Grower Awards.

Education was important to Ray. He read and studied constantly in his spare time usually with a child or two on his lap. He attended night classes every winter and also earned his GED. He was an excellent conversationalist, knowledgeable on almost any topic. He served on the Notre Dame School Board for several terms and was instrumental in building the school in 1963. He enjoyed working with his friends and neighbors among them Gerald Blong, Paul Seifried, and Chub McAllister. His hobbies included reading, dancing to a good polka band, golfing, going to the casino, and watching the markets. He was sharp at playing cards until the end.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Cresco; six sons and five daughters: Linda (Bob) Henson of Clive, Gary (Janel) Langreck of Cresco, John Langreck of Cresco, Ken (Colleen) Langreck of Marengo, Diane (Dan) McGrain of Council Bluffs, Donna (Jeff) Jones of Ankeny, Deb (Glen) McIntire of Clear Lake, Dar (John) Skoda of Cresco, Dennis (Beth) Langreck of Lime Springs, Ron (Julie) Langreck of Cresco, Rick Langreck of Cresco; 34 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings: Josephine Heying of West Union, Victor Langreck of Cresco, Theresa Zipsie of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, Colette Ameling of West Union, Dolores Buchheit of St. Lucas, Roger Langreck of St. Lucas, and Joyce Zoulek of Calmar.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Lena Pitzenberger of New Hampton and Lucy McNamara of Eagle Rock, Mo.; and a brother: Leo Langreck of Cresco.



Steve Fishbaugher, 52

CRESCO - Steve Fishbaugher, 52, of Cresco, Iowa and formerly of Harmony, Minnesota died Monday evening, Feb. 18, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota. Family and friends were invited from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Community Center in Harmony for a time of fellowship.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony handled the arrangements.

Steven J. Fishbaugher was born Oct. 27, 1960 in Harmony, Minnesota, the son of Robert and Audrey (Patterson) Fishbaugher. He attended local schools graduating from Harmony High School in 1979.

He married Crystle Shofner in 1985, they later divorced. For many years Steve worked as a maintenance person at Harmony Health Care. Since 2000 he was a forklift driver at Valley Design Enterprise in Fountain, Minnesota

In his spare time Steve was an avid deer hunter and also enjoyed fishing, playing golf and pool, watching Nascar and was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings. Most of all Steve enjoyed spending time with his children.

Steve is survived by his longtime companion, Diane Venable of Cresco; two children: Zachary Fishbaugher of Preston, Minnesota and Karli Fishbaugher of Caledonia, Minnesota; Diane's children: Ann Kovarik and Theresa Albert; Diane's grandson: Jay Dean Smith III; Steve's step-father: Orel Sinclair of Canton; his father: Robert Fishbaugher of Harmony; five siblings: Larry (Jerilyn) Fishbaugher of Racine, Minnesota, Jeffery (Kay) Fishbaugher of Dover, Minnesota, Norene (Dan) Schwirtz of Caledonia, Minnesota, Bryan (Jill) Fishbaugher of Harmony and Stuart Fishbaugher of Canton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Audrey Sinclair; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.


Kenneth Peter, 88

LIME SPRINGS - Funeral services for Kenneth H. Peter of Lime Springs will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs. Kenny's ashes will be interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Lime Springs in an exquisitely handcrafted box made by his grandson, Jonathan Oren Stevens.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Kenneth, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013.

A lifelong resident of Iowa, Kenneth Herbert Peter was born Oct. 19, 1924, near Ridgeway, Iowa, the son of Herb and Hazel (Burnikel) Peter. Along with his siblings Herbert E. "Bill" (now deceased) and his sisters Marilyn and Eileen, Kenny worked family farms in Howard and Winneshiek counties. Upon returning from WWII, where he served in the US Navy in the Pacific, Kenny settled in Lime Springs.

On Oct. 10, 1946, he married Blanche Ostby and they raised their family in Lime Springs. A true Citizen, Kenny was active in most aspects of Lime Springs, serving as Mayor during the town's Centennial in 1968. Organization memberships included St. Paul's Lutheran Church, American Legion Post # 545, Masonic Lodge and numerous commercial and civic committees. Kenny's most notable business venture was Peter Produce which involved him in statewide and national egg industry activities.

He was well known as an avid fisherman and the instigator of annual fishing trips "up north" at Leech Lake for over 50 years. Kenny and Blanche were especially talented at gathering groups of people for fun and community. They continued to gather people together as snowbirds in Arizona for many years.

Descendants of Kenneth and Blanche Peter are, son: Herbert Henry Peter of Lime Springs and his daughter Megan Peter of New York City; daughter: Patricia (Jesse E.) Stevens of New Hampshire and Lime Springs and their children Jonathan Oren Stevens of Portland, ME, Bethany (Sam) Shroyer of Earlville, Iowa. Kenny proudly answered to "Old Grandpa" as he was fondly called by these great-grandchildren: Neva Stevens, Aden Atwell, Kriya Atwell, Willow Lynn Shroyer and Maxwell Shroyer.

Raymond Rance, 56

CRESCO - Funeral services for Raymond "Ray" R. Rance of Cresco were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with a scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to the services at the church.

Ray, 56, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013 at his home in rural Cresco.

A dedicated and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, and grandfather, Raymond Richard Rance was born July 10, 1956, the son of Raymond Charles and Angeline (Northness) Rance. Growing up, Ray was involved with running the family farm, FFA and Driftrunners Snowmobile Club. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1974.

In 1976, Ray married Darla Daskam at United Methodist Church in Cresco. Ray began his career spending 20 years at Spahn & Rose Lumber Company and was later a cost accountant at Featherlite Trailers for 15 years. Most recently, Ray was a salesman at Plantpeddler until June of 2012.

From 1979-1993 Ray served on the Cresco Fire Department. He was a longtime member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Ray enjoyed and was most happy spending time with his family and working outside on the family farm, raising livestock and crops. He loved fishing, camping and snowmobiling alongside his wife, Darla and each summer, Ray made sure to get in a few rounds of golf. He enjoyed years of watching his kids in their high school and college sporting events and recently he loved spoiling his grandson as often as possible. Ray also enjoyed wood working, creating beautiful projects in his shop. Ray was active and outgoing; he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling and looking for ways to turn every occasion into a fun event, which typically involved playing practical jokes, lots of laughs and stories.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Darla; son: Jared (Jessica) of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, son: Brian (Amber) and grandson, Sawyer of Monticello, Iowa; niece: Whitney McEachran of Portland, Oregon; mother: Angeline Rance of Cresco; sisters: Sandy (John) Lentz and Shirley (Thomas) Smith of Elma; as well as many other family members and friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Raymond; and sister: Sue McEachran.
