Robert Jensen, 84

ELMA - Funeral services for Robert M. Jensen of Elma, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma with Pastor Ryan McDermott officiating. Interment was held in Howard Cemetery at Elma.

Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Robert, 84, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Colonial Manor in Elma of complications of lung cancer.

Robert Martin Jensen was born June 17, 1929, at Ostrander, Minnesota, the son of Merrill and Elizabeth (Haag) Jensen. He attended school in Oakdale Township, Iowa and graduated from LeRoy High School in 1947 at LeRoy, Minnesota.Nebraska He had been an active 4-H member and also a Boy Scout. He farmed with his dad after high school and worked two winters in packing plants before he became a full-time employee of Martz Furniture in LeRoy. He joined the US Army in 1952 and in 1953 he was in Korea with the 3rd Infantry Division, 3rd Signal Corps as a teletype repairman. In February of 1954 he returned to LeRoy and started dairy farming.

On June 20, 1954 he married Irma Bodermann at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma. In 1957, they moved to a farm northwest of Elma, where they resided until retiring in 1994 and moving into Elma. In addition to farming Robert served as an Afton Township trustee for several years and drove school bus for 28 for the Howard Winneshiek School District. He was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church holding several church officer positions. Robert enjoyed driving for the menonite families in the area and reading.

Robert is survived by his wife Irma of Elma; two daughters: Ruth and her husband Rev. Timothy Brisbois of Beatrice, Nebraska and Janet Jensen of Tinley Park, Illinois; and two granddaughters: Elizabeth Brisbois of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Rebekah Brisbois of Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to St. Peter Lutheran Church, School House Museum, Howard County Hospice or charity of donor's choice.


Alvin Mashek, 77

SPILLVILLE - Mass of Christian Burial services for Alvin Mashek of Spillville, Iowa were held Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating.

Lectors were Phillip Mashek, Alicia Mashek, and Randy Mashek.

Offertory giftbearers were Macie Mashek, Lori Peterson and Karen Scanlan.

Doris Thompson was organist. The St. Wenceslaus Choir performed. Soloist was Dan Silhacek. Marc Frana provided special music. Song selections were “Here I Am, Lord”, “Precious Lord”, “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Going Home” and “Blue Spanish Eyes.”

Eucharistic ministers were Linda Klimesh, Judy Adams and Eric Mashek.

Casketbearers were Andrew Mashek, Phillip Mashek, Eric Mashek, Michael Mashek, Thomas Mashek and Roger Ferrie.

Military rites at the graveside were provided by Clarence Bily American Legion Post #467, Spillville.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Cresco. Balik Funeral Home, Spillville, handled arrangements.

Alvin W Mashek, age 77, of Spillville, Iowa died Friday August 2, 2013 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Alvin Walter Mashek was born on October 10, 1935, the son of Walter and Leona (Zeman) Mashek of Calmar.

Alvin graduated from Calmar High School and worked at Bucheit Produce in Calmar. He went on to serve in the Army from 1958 – 1960 and then worked at Donaldson Company, Inc. in Cresco for 32 years, retiring in April of 1998.

He later worked for Graphics in Calmar and most recently partnered with his two sons, Wayne and Randy, opening the A&W/Long John Silver’s in Cresco in 2002.

On October 8, 1960, Alvin married Marie Frana. They became the parents of four children, Lori, Karen, Wayne and Randy. Marie died on June 26, 1995 and is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Cresco.

On July 11, 1998, Alvin married Phyllis (Novak) Riehle at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville.

In his free time, Alvin enjoyed collecting many things especially post cards, researching his genealogy, and during Ragbrai was Marie’s trainer and support person as well as the housing coordinator for Ragbrai riders.

The things that Alvin loved most were gardening, collecting post cards, vacations with his family and he had a passion for dancing. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Spillville American Legion and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Alvin is survived by his wife: Phyllis, Spillville; four children: Lori Peterson (Mike Neleman), Cedar Rapids, Karen (Ronald) Scanlan, Ashton, Illinois, Wayne (Kelly) Mashek, Cresco, Randy (Brenda) Mashek, Cresco; grandchildren: Natalie Scanlan, Teresa Scanlan, Alicia, Andrew, Phillip, Eric, Michael, Sarah, Macie and Thomas Mashek; step-children: David (Kathy) Riehle, Calmar, Richard (Janet) Riehle, Wilmington, Del., James (Kathryn) Riehle, Decorah, Ronald (Leah) Riehle, Calmar; step-grandchildren: Jill (David) Kistenmacher, Dawn (Keith) Schechinger, Robert Riehle, Hailey Riehle, Hunter Riehle; step-great-grandchildren: Abigail Kistenmacher and Riley Schechinger; brothers-in-law: Lawrence Frana, Maple Leaf, Iowa and David (Jackie) Frana, Walker, Minnesota; sisters-in-law: Leona Stortz, Mabel, Minnesota, Sylvia Hayek, Fort Atkinson, Gladys Ferrie, Harmony, Minnesota, Eileen (Pat) Sweeney, Elma.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Leona Mashek; wife: Marie June 26, 1995; brother: Ronald August 9, 1996; brothers-in-law: Joe Stortz, Ray Hayek and Ray Ferrie; step-son: Michael Riehle; step-great granddaughter: Harper Schechinger.

Charles Morgan, 84

HARMONY, MINNESOTA - A Memorial Mass of Resurrection and Celebration of Life for Charles "Chuck" H. Morgan of Harmony, Minnesota will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony is handling the arrangements.

Chuck, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013 at his home in Harmony.

Charles H. Morgan was born July 7, 1929, the only child of Willard "Burton" and Laurel "Faye" (Hewes) Morgan, on a farm northeast of Lime Springs, Iowa. At age 16 his family moved to a farm in York Twp., Fillmore County; on which he lived and farmed until 1999 when he moved to Harmony.

Chuck attended Lime Springs Elementary School and graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1947. During his Jr. High and Sr. High years he was active in 4-H Club activities and was later a leader in Howard County 4-H for nine years. He was also very active in sports. Discipline was a strong point in school along with outstanding teachers.

After high school Chuck enjoyed and played organized fast-pitch softball for 18 years; he umpired for several years after that.

Chuck married Bernadine Kelly in 1949. They had six children; Rick, Mary, Joe, Tim, Tom and Sue. In 1973 they divorced with the children staying on the farm with Chuck. In 1978 Chuck married Emily (Scheevel) Scrabeck. She had four children; Larry, Dwight, Wayne and Karen.

He served on the Harmony School Board, the York Township Board of Supervisors for 18 years, and 12 years on the Fillmore County Unit of Township Officers. Chuck was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was very involved in the local Council. He obtained the Fourth Degree level of membership.

Chuck was an active volunteer in the community and attended school and church events, much which included his grandchildren and great-grandchildren which he enthusiastically supported.

Chuck is survived by his wife Emily; nine children: Rick (Gin) Morgan, Mary (Harlan) Larson, Joe (Lori) Morgan, Tim (Bev) Morgan, Tom (Renee) Morgan, Larry (Rosie) Scrabeck, Dwight Scrabeck (Janey Afseth), Wayne (Deb) Scrabeck, Karen (Edward Dains) Scrabeck; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter: Susan (Morgan) Reiss; and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to a charity of their choice.


Bruce Gunhus, 58

FORTH WORTH, TEXAS - Funeral services for Bruce Gunhus, 58, of Forth Worth, Texas, and formerly of Cresco, were at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Interment followed at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Cresco. Friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home and on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of services.

Bruce C. Gunhus died Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

He was born January 16, 1955 in San Diego, California, the son of Larry and Virginia (Sanderson) Gunhus.

He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1973 and last weekend visited with many of his former classmates at their 40-year class reunion.

Following high school he worked in the auto parts departments at Kratz Motors in Cresco, later at other dealerships in Oelwein, Mason City, California and Texas. He also worked for a barge line on the Mississippi River. Most recently he was a real estate agent with Jack Edson Real Estate in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Of utmost importance in Bruce’s life he gave forever homes to many a good dog, whether they came to him or he chose them. Bruce enjoyed hunting, riding all types of bikes from pedal bike to dirt bike to Harley Davidsons, including a Servi-car and his most recent antique Harley Davidson police bike.

As a Nascar fan, he has held season tickets to the Ft. Worth motor speedway since its inception.

He took great enjoyment in storytelling while sitting around with his family and friends. He was one to take great pride in his Norwegian heritage, his Texan residency and the personal characteristic most associated with him; his handlebar moustache.

He is survived by his dad and stepmother; Larry and Lois Gunhus of Decorah; two sisters: Kristi (Lonnie) of Cresco and Valerie and her son Beirgen of Waukon; a stepbrother, Craig (Sarah) Chyle and children, Caleb, Camrin, Chloe all of Decorah; a stepsister, Crystal (Bill) Wetherington and children, Christopher, Jessica, Aaron and Tristan all of Cresco; his aunt, Shirley (Alan) Meister and family of California; his uncle, Harlan (Connie) Sanderson of Wisconsin; his aunt, Gelene Gunhus and family of Cresco and his good neighbor, Doug Delong of Ft. Worth, Texas. Bruce will also be missed by his dogs, Bo and Black Jack.

Bruce is preceded in death by his mom, Virginia in 1973, his grandparents, his uncle Duane Gunhus and many good friends of all ages.


Edith Roberts, 95

HARRISON, ARKANSAS - Mass of Christian Burial for Edith M. Roberts of Harrison, Arkansas was held at Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Harrison on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 10 a.m. preceded by the Rosary at 9:30 a.m. Pallbearers were the Knights of Columbus.

Burial was at Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, July 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Holt Memorial Chapel.

Edith passed away at her home on July 11, 2013. She was 95 years old.

Edith Marie Roberts, the daughter of Adolph and Sophia (Panoch) Svoboda was born on March 20,1918 in Howard County, Iowa.

She graduated from Cresco High School.

Edith later moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she worked at Globe Hoist and Globe Machinery & Supply Companies for 40 years. She loved to read.

Edith was a member of Mary Mother of God Catholic Church and had been active in the Altar and Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Edward J. Svoboda of Protivin and half-brother, Benjamin F. Davis of Spencer, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Danford M. Roberts, Harrison, Arkansas; nephews: Larry (Helen) Svoboda of Clear Lake; Edward “Bud” (Diane) Svoboda of St. Charles, Mo., John (Nancy) Svoboda of Omaha, Nebraska; Richard (Julie) Davis of Oakridge, Oregon; Dan (Shannon) Davis, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and nieces: Margaret Johnsrud, St. Louis, Missouri, and Deborah Davis, Ankeny, Iowa.

Jonah Johnson, stillborn son

NEW HAMPTON - A Mass of Christian Burial for Jonah Melvin Johnson was held 7 p.m. Friday evening, Aug. 16, 2013, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Emily Baltes was lector and Mike Carlin was the cantor. Sharon and Steve Kipp presented the offertory gifts. Pallbearers were Andy Hugeback, Deanne Vaughan and Dana Lehmann. Interment was held in the New Hampton City Cemetery following the service.

Friends greeted the family from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday evening at the church prior to the service.

Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton handled the arrangements.

Jonah Melvin Johnson, stillborn son of Drew and Maggie Johnson of New Hampton, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 13, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Jonah is loved by his parents: Drew and Maggie Johnson of New Hampton; grandparents: Keith and Lori Johnson of Alta Vista and Bryan and Gayla Hugeback of New Hampton; aunts: Deanne (Joe) Vaughan and their daughter, Birdie of Minneapolis and Dana (Erik) Lehmann and their son Owen of Iowa City; uncle: Andy Hugeback of New Hampton; great-grandparents: Dean and Alice Schroeder of Chester, Rose Hugeback of Algona and Marlene Reicks of New Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents: Melvin and Avis Johnson, Melvin Reicks and Leon Hugeback.


  Daniel Slifka, 87

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Daniel J. Slifka of Cresco was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church hall in Cresco with Father Dennis Cain officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Daniel, 87, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Daniel J. Slifka was the youngest of five children born to John Slifka and Anna (Schneider) Slifka. He attended Assumption Grade School and a rural country schoolhouse and earned a GED. Daniel lived his entire life in Howard County.

On June 23, 1948, he married Irene Borseth at the Assumption Catholic Church parsonage. Daniel and Irene lived in the house they built for more than four decades, until two years ago when he moved to Evans Memorial Home.

Daniel was a doting father and grandfather with an outstanding sense of humor and strong faith. As a young man, Daniel was employed by Farmers Coop Creamery, Burgess and Sons (lumber yard), and Elvin Hanneman (home construction). He was a very talented cabinet builder and carpenter who built multiple homes and custom cabinets in the Cresco area. He enjoyed repairing cars, starting with his 1928 and 1931 Model A's.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene; daughter: Daneille Slifka-Kirby (Karlos) of Des Moines; a son: Darrell of State Center; granddaughters: Celene, Sydney, and Shay Slifka; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Slifka and Lucille Borseth; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Mildred Kudrna; brothers: Clarence, Gerald and Elmer; daughter-in-law: Cheryl (Pollock) Slifka; and nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be given to Notre Dame Catholic School, 221 2nd Ave. E, Cresco, Iowa 52136 or to a favorite charity.


Dale Frank, 74

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - Dale Frank, 74, died Thursday, July 4, 2013 of Parkinson's disease.

He was born and raised on a farm in Cresco Iowa. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a master's degree in biology. He continued his education with a year at the University of Texas and a summer at the University of Washington. After moving to the Seattle area in 1969 he taught biology at Evergreen High School in Burien.

He will be remembered for his many talents in woodworking, mechanics, cooking, and conversation. Dale had an intense curiosity about everything, earning him the well-deserved nick name the answer man.

He is survived by his wife Joan; two daughters: Kathy and Sheri; a brother; and a sister.


Eileen May, 92

CRESCO - A Mass for Eileen M. May of Colorado Springs, Colo. was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Colorado Springs. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 at Swan Law Funeral Directors.

Eileen, 92, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 at Pikes Peak Care and Rehabilitation Center in Colorado Springs. She had Alzheimer's.

Eileen Margaret May was the oldest of six children born to William and Anna Beaumaster on a farm near Lourdes, Iowa.


Grace McNeal, 85

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Grace M. McNeal of Protivin, Iowa will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March officiating. The pall will be placed by her children. Joanie Swestka will be the lector. Terry Bales and Krystle Bales will present the offertory gifts. Pallbearers are Bud Svoboda, Larry Svoboda, Ron Swestka, John Swestka, Jr., Gary Swestka and Bernie Pecinovsky. Interment will be held in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin.

Friends greeted the family 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hugeback Johnson's Protivin Funeral Home where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 6 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation was held 9:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday morning.

Grace, 85, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Grace Marie (Komarek) McNeal was born Jan. 9, 1928, the only child of Benjamin and Gertrude (Beckman) Kalishek. She received all her education in Protivin and graduated from Rudolphinium High School in 1946.

On June 8, 1948, she married her classmate and high school sweetheart, Clarence E. Komarek at the Holy Trintiy Catholic Church in Protivin. To this union six children were born. The couple lived and farmed side-by-side on the Komarek Family farm just west of Protivin. Family always came first to Grace and the couple also enjoyed socializing and visiting with their neighbors. A family vacation was always important to Grace and Clarence. Grace worked at Sara Lee in New Hampton for over 25 years. Clarence died in 1978 at the age of 51. Grace lived a few years in Iowa City and later met and married Loren "Smokey" McNeal. He died in 2011.

Baking kolaches and rolickies were a favorite pastime for Grace.

Grace is survived by three sons: Dennis Komarek, Merlin Komarek, both of Protivin and Alvin (Deb) Komarek of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two daughters: Patricia (Ty) Drago of Tulsa and Terry (Phillip) Bales of Inola, Oklahoma; two grandchildren: Krystle Bales of Inola and Taylor Komarek of Tulsa.

She was preceded in death by both her husbands; one son: Joseph in infancy; and her parents.

Grace Polansky, 85

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Grace E. Polansky, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 in Glendale, Arizona.  Celebration of Her Life will be held Nov. 10, 2013 in San Diego, California, Greenwood Mortuary next to her husband Bill.

Grace Eileen Polansky was born Dec. 30, 1927, in Ridgeway, Iowa, the second daughter of Louis and Clara Lukas. She attended schools in Ridgeway and graduated from Rudolphinum Hign school in 1945 with honors.

She attended college at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa becoming a teacher in Ridgeway and Notre Dame School in Cresco, Iowa.

On Sept. 4, 1948 she married William (Bill) Polansky and they had two daughters, Sherry and Susan. They farmed in Spillville, Iowa before moving to California for two years and relocated again in Cresco. Grace continued to teach and Bill did many jobs including owning a gas station that Grace did all of the accounting and business management. They relocated again in San Diego in 1971 and continued to work and live in LaJolla, California. Bill passed away in September of 1977.

Grace relocated to Portland, Oregon to be near her daughter Sherry Walton and son-in-law Jon Walton.

She loved Oregon very much but after 16 years she decided to move to Glendale, Arizona near her daughter Susan Troller and grandchildren.

Grace is survived by her daughters: Sherry (Jon) Walton and Susan Troller; two grandchildren: Christie Troller and sons: Aiden and Cash; Ryan Troller (Erica) and sons: Conner and Carson; a sister: Jeanette Sandling of Indio, California; a brother: Lester (Alice) of Calmar, Iowa; a sister: LaVinia Rilling of LaMesa, California; and many nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her parents: Louis and Clara Lukas; and son-in-law: Steven Troller.


Harold Seidel, 89

LEROY, MINNESOTA - Funeral services for Harold Fredrick Joseph Seidel of LeRoy, Minnesota, formerly of Riceville and Saratoga, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Riceville. Interment was held in Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville and one hour before services at the church.

Harold, 89, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Victor Buresh, 94

SARATOGA - Funeral services for Victor J. Buresh of Saratoga, Iowa will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held in Saratoga Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Victor, 94, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Victor Joseph Buresh was born Oct. 28, 1918 on his family farm in Saratoga Township, Howard County, Iowa. He was baptized, confirmed and was a member of the Saratoga Presbyterian Church all his life.

Victor married Doris Knudson in 1942. Victor and Doris farmed until 1977 when they retired and moved to Saratoga. Victor was an avid hunter and also enjoyed wood-working and being a gunsmith.

Victor is survived by Doris, his wife of 70 years; their children: Richard (Kathy) Buresh of Mission, Texas, Rosalie (Bill) Creamer of Kissimmee, Florida, Tom (Connie) Buresh of Waukon, Iowa and Dawn (John) Snyder of Shamrock, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
