Robert Davis, 73

Published:
Tuesday, April 2, 2013

MASON CITY - Robert Davis, the longtime choral director at North Iowa Area Community College who was elected to the college's board of directors after he retired, died Friday at age 73.

"We are so sad to lose someone who has been such an amazing supporter of the college for so long," said NIACC President Debra Derr. "We are really, really going to miss him."

"Davis was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December," said NIACC's current choral director, Jayson Ryner, who is also one of Davis' former students.

"He was very formative for me early in my career," Ryner said, noting he wasn't planning to major in music when he arrived at NIACC as a freshman, but he changed his mind during his sophomore year."

Davis retired in 2001 after 27 years at the college.

"He went by the choir room nearly every day for a decade after he retired just to listen and be proud of the program," Ryner said.

Ryner said Davis always offered him his assistance and subbed for him if necessary.

Ryner said some little things he does during choir rehearsals came from Davis, so his influence is being passed on to the next generation. Davis, a native of Perry who received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Drake University, taught high school vocal music in Belmond and Boone before arriving at NIACC in 1974.

In his second year at the college, he started the NIACC Singers, a show choir that has traveled all over the country to perform.

He also founded the North Iowa Choral Society.

Ryner said Davis' influence reached farm beyond NIACC.

He was instrumental in starting the Iowa Choral Directors Association, which has its annual conventions in Mason City.

Davis also was the exhibit chairman for the American Choral Directors Association's annual convention, where he did a lot of behind-the-scenes work.

"He did a lot of wonderful things in his lifetime," Ryner said.

Davis was first elected to NIACC's board of directors in 2007. He was re-elected in 2011.

Davis had diabetes, but he loved to run and was "tremendously fit," Ryner said.

Derr said Davis was a big supporter of NIACC's athletic programs and could often be found taking tickets at basketball games.

"We have kind of lost one of our guardian angels," she said.

They made their home in Cresco and Evansdale, Iowa areas before moving to Des Moines. Don worked as a mechanic at both Schuki Chevrolet in Waterloo and Bob Brown Chevrolet in Des Moines.

After Don moved back to the Cresco area, he found his real passion, refurbishing old tractors. He was in the height of his glory when taking what his children thought was junk, and creating masterpieces. He took real pride in this passion, from finding all the parts and piecing them together, to hearing the tractor motor run for the first time, to sanding and eventually painting the final product. Each one he restored was like the first; always very meticulous in making sure they were perfect. Some of the tractors he refurbished he would drive in parades, even having his sons driving some of them.

Don loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He and his long-time companion, Lois Fisher, enjoyed going to towns along the Mississippi River, attending auctions, flea markets, tractor and car shows. He really enjoyed thrashing season and having everyone come out to his acreage and assist him. He also loved his old time country music and NASCAR racing.
