Duane Kratz, 80

AUSTIN, TEXAS- A small memorial service was held for Duane A. Kratz of Austin, Texas on Sunday, April 7, 2013 with cremation then taking place under the direction of Cook-Walden Chapel of Hills Funeral Home. Duane's remains will be taken to Cresco, Iowa where he will be placed next to his mother and father. Graveside services will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 at New Oregon Cemetery.

Duane, 80, died on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in his home of natural causes.

Duane Arnold Kratz was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Cresco, Iowa the son of Herbert and Gladys (Hovden) Kratz. At the young age of 17, Duane enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War in Asia. After four years he was honorably discharged from service. Duane then returned to Cresco and was employed at the Cresco Times Plain Dealer as a Linotype operator. He also worked at the Del Monte Foods Plant in Minneapolis, Minnesota and at the Trane Company in Lacrosse, Wisconsin as a machinist.

In 1957, he married Beverly Hruska in Lacrosse, Wisconsin where they resided until 1958. They moved to South Gate, California. Duane became employed at Western Gear Corporation as a machinist making military parts for the U.S. Navy. After the passing of his father in 1959, they returned to Waterloo, Iowa so Duane could help on his father's farm on weekends. He was employed at a manufacturing company as a machinist. In 1961, Duane and Beverly returned to California, where Duane continued his trade of being a machinist with the Del Ron Company which specialized in manufacture of airplane parts. While there, Duane was promoted to superintendent of the manufacturing division. After retiring from the company, he became a licensed Realtor and Broker. In 1981, Duane and Beverly divorced and he moved to Texas.

In 1982, Duane married Thelma West, whom he was with until 1990 when they divorced. Duane made his residence in Austin, Texas from 1983 till the time of his death. He worked for Dell Computers from 1991-2001.

Duane loved to listen to music, especially jazz and dance. He often traveled to Montana where his brother Alan took him on adventures into the Rocky Mountains and Glacier Park. He enjoyed working in his yard and taking care of the houses that he owned. Duane often reflected on the best place he ever visited was Big Bear in California. Duane's smile, good sense of humor, and gift for conversation will be greatly missed.

Duane is survived by his brothers: Alan (Robin) Kratz of Valier, Mont. and Roger (Patty) Kratz of Ridgeway, Iowa; plus several nephews; a niece; great-nieces; great-nephews; and step-daughter: Teresa West.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Gerald Cummings, 55

McINTIRE - Memorial services for Gerald "Kenny" A. Cummings of McIntire, Iowa were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in rural Elma, Iowa. The committal service was held at 1:30 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa.

Friends were to pay their condolences at the home of Jeanne Kulow of McIntire.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville handled the arrangements.

Kenny, 55, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at his home.


Donald Ernst, 87

CEDAR FALLS - Services for Donald E. Ernst of Cedar Falls, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2013 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Military Rites were conducted by Gilbertville American Legion Post 714 at 1 p.m. at Garden of Memories Mausoleum.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30 at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, Waterloo, Iowa. A rosary was held at 4 p.m. and a vigil service was held at 7 p.m.

Donald, 87, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 after a lengthy illness at Western Home Communities, Elizabeth E. Martin Center.

Donald E. Ernst was born July 16, 1925, near Cresco, Iowa, the son of Charles and Helena (Bergmann) Ernst. He was raised in rural Cresco on a farm and attended country school. Don served in the Army during World War II.

On May 1, 1948, he married Elaine Springer in Cresco. Don had a milk route and hauled for Rochester Dairy and drove a school bus. Don and Elaine moved to Waterloo where he was employed at Rath Packing, which he retired after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Highland Associates for 30 plus years, was a grantor for 20 years with Make A Wish Foundation and a 15 year member with the Gilbertville American Legion.

Don is survived by his wife Elaine of Cedar Falls; four sons: Alan (Brenda) of Waterloo, Mike (Angie) of Waterloo, Thomas (Susan Wirtjes) of Waterloo and Dale (Patty) of Lenexa, Kansas; three daughters: Cathy Ernst Benz of Evansdale, Debbie Ernst of Waterloo and Mary (Tom) Sharp of Elk Run Heights; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; a brother: Wallace (Darlene) of New Hampton; and two sisters: Shirley Matt of Cresco and Jeanette (Norman) Anderson of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Arnold, Ervin, Hubert, Wayne, and one in infancy; and a sister in infancy.

Sister Rose Catherine Kuehner, 99

LaCROSSE, WISCONSIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Rose Catherine Kuehner of St. Rose Convent in LaCrosse was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21 in the Mary of The Angels Chapel at St. Rose Convent in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Interment was held in the Catholic Cemetery on Losey Boulevard in LaCrosse.

Sister Rose Catherine Kuehner, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 99, died Wednesday evening, May 15, 2013 at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse. She was in the seventy-third year of her religious profession.

Sister Rose Catherine (Mary Ann Kuehner) was born Dec. 18, 1913 on the farm near St. Lucas the daughter of Nicholas and Katherine (Hackman) Kuehner. Mary attended St. Luke's Catholic School. After graduation from the eighth grade she took a six week sewing course. She spent most of her time working as a hired girl for relatives and neighbors, as well as helping her parents at home.

On Aug. 13, 1937 Mary entered St. Rose Convent. She was received into the novitiate on Aug. 9, 1938 and was given the name Sister Rose Catherine.

She pronounced first vows on Aug. 12, 1940 and made final profession on Aug. 9, 1946. Sister Rose Catherine served as a homemaker in Convent Homes in Iowa, Idaho and Wisconsin for fifty-one years including 14 years in the kitchen and bakery at Villa St. Joseph. During several summers she worked with the poor through the Shared Horizons Program sponsored by the FSPA. In 1991 Sister Rose Catherine retired at St. Rose Convent, volunteering in the bakery and kitchen until 1995. She made the Villa her home in 2006.

Sister Rose Catherine is survived by her Franciscan Community; one sister-in-law: Rita Kuehner of St. Lucas; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters: Sr.(Rosina) Nicolette FSPA, Teresa, William, Elizabeth, Anna, Sr. (Barbara) Cyrene FSPA, Carl, Josephine and Leonard.

Alfred R. Evans, 85

LEROY, MINNESOTA - Alfred R. Evans, 85, of LeRoy, Minnesota, died peacefully in his home Friday, June 7, 2013.

He was born Nov. 30, 1927 in Chappell, Nebraska to Florence and Ray Evans. He grew up in Sidney, Nebraska, where he played high school basketball and worked as a printer's devil.

He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 during World War II and was a proud member of the Rochester, Minnesota Honor Flight corp in October, 2009. He was a linotype operator/printer/publisher through his lifetime, starting his publishing career in Atkinson, Illinois at The Atkinson-Annawan News weekly newspaper in 1963. During his career, he owned publications as well in Hillsboro, Wisconsin; the Henry County Advertizer in Geneseo, Illinois and three other area publications in Orion, Port Byron and Atkinson. With his wife, he owned the LeRoy Independent in LeRoy, Minnesota, buying it in 1992 as well as the Lime Springs Herald.

He was a fifth generation printer and one of his greatest achievements was the fact that most of his children followed in his career footsteps.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eileen. They were married Oct. 16, 1950 in International Falls, Minnesota. He is also survived by 14 children including Terry (Mary Kay) of Plymouth, Wisconsin; Pat Markor of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin; Tim (Luanne) of Moline, Illinois; Linda (Leo) Smith of Park City, Illinois; Debra (Joe) Welter of Grayslake, Illinois; Sue Beck of Canton, Ga.; Donna (Tom) Gnidovic of Chicago, Illinois; Barb (Brian) O'Neill of Owatonna, Minnesota; Dan (Joyce) of LeRoy, Minnesota; Julie (Mark) Hale of Clearwater, Florida; Greg (Sue) of Sparta, Wisconsin; Natalie (Robert Rizer) of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; Dave (Amy) of Kasson, Minnesota; Matt (Jessie) of Byron, Minnesota, as well as 32 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two brothers, Paul (Sue) of Bayard, NE and Don of Bridgeport, Nebraska, as well as two sisters, LaWanda Bennett of Bayard, Nebraska and Connie (Don) Benker of Greeley, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Virgil; and an infant son Ronnie.

He was a member of the LeRoy American Legion Post 161, served on the Illinois Press Association Board of Directors, helped start the Atkinson Chamber of Commerce and served as president, served as member of the Atkinson Fire Department, and the Atkinson Village Board. He was chairman of the LeRoy Economic Development Board and helped find a physician and start the Mayo Clinic Health System in LeRoy. He was an active member of the LeRoy Senior Citizens and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in LeRoy.

He was a Nebraska football fan, enjoyed playing horseshoes, bowling, pool, cribbage, computer games, watching game shows, and read books on Westerns.

Visitation was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in LeRoy, Minnesota on Monday. A funeral service was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Tuesday with burial following at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church Cemetery. A lunch was also served at the church.

William Burke, 61

SPRING VALLEY, MINNESOTA - William "Bill" Burke, 61, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at his home in Spring Valley, Minnesota. A Celebration of Life gathering will be set for a later date. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco is handling the arrangements.

William Burke was born June 8, 1951 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Allan and Rita (Shea) Burke. He graduated from Notre Dame Catholic School in 1969.

On January 31, 1971, he married Carol Craft.

In the 70's Bill served in the United States Navy. After being discharged he was employed as an owner/operator semi-truck driver for 25 years. After his career of truck driving he was employed for nine years, as a forklift driver for Featherlite Trailers. In 2002, Bill began training as an IV Technologist with the Mayo Clinic, where he worked up until his death.

In his leisure time Bill enjoyed fishing, riding his Harley Davison motorcycle, and spending time with family, friends, and his dog "Little B".

Bill is survived by his three daughters: Kimberly (Roland) Shever of Knoxville, Iowa, and their children, Nathan, Samantha, Hunter, and Brianna, Tina (Dennis Hron) Burke of Cresco, Iowa, and their children, Christopher, Jordan, Tyler, and Amber, and Cary (Craig Witt) Burke of Lime Springs, Iowa, and their children, Bruce, Billie, Bobbi, and Bailey Burke; his two great-grandchildren: Anthony and Steven; three brothers: Roger, Francis, and Tim; and four sisters: Mary, Barb, Theresa, and Alice.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Carol; parents; and two brothers: Bruce and Steven.



George Hill DDS, 85

FRESNO, CALIFORNIA - George "Ray" Raymond Hill DDS of Fresno, California, 85, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 in Fresno with family at his side.

Ray, "G.R.", was born Sept. 28, 1927 in Hampton, Iowa the youngest of three children of Senator G.R. Hill and Genevieve HIllinois He was raised in Clarion, Iowa.

G.R. served in the United States Navy before attending the University of Iowa Dental School. After graduating in 1953, he moved his family to Cresco where he practiced for 10 years before moving to Fresno, California and establishing a second practice there for 52 years. He enjoyed getting to know his patients and treated them as family in both communities.

His most enjoyable hobbies were playing golf and cards at the San Joaquin Country Club, where he was a member for many years. He had a passion for sports and supporting Fresno State Bulldog athletics, especially the basketball and football teams, as well as his alma mater, the Iowa Hawkeyes. He could always be found at a game, tailgate event or a booster event.

His fondest memories were told and retold of life in Iowa, family trips to Hawaii, a houseboat trip to lake Mead and fishing in Canada.

G.R. was a loving, caring, and generous man. He loved his dogs. He treated each of them as an extension of the family. He enjoyed driving to the coast with Teddy and his dogs and spending the day strolling in Carmel.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Leona "Teddy" Hill; his children: Ray Hill, Holly Billings, Wendy McGuffick and Jon Hill and his wife Shelly, all of Fresno; his sister: Bette Jones of Cincinnati, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter: Cathy; and a brother who died shortly after birth.



Helen Carolan, 91

RIDGEWAY - A Mass of Christian Burial for Helen B. Carolan of Ridgeway, Iowa was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Lector was Vallori Carolan, offertory giftbearers were Cassidy, Emily, Cody and Andrew Carolan. Doris Thompson was organist, the St. Wenceslaus Choir, Stacy Carolan soloist, Jim Busta special music sang: "Here I Am, Lord", "Taste and See", "On Eagle's Wings", "How Great Thou Art". Eucharistic minister was Ages Soukup. Pallbearers were Stacy Carolan, Jenice Carolan, Duane Carolan, Carrie Carolan, Neal Carolan, Jenna Carolan Jason Carolan, Nathan Carolan, Julie Carolan and Eric Carolan. Interment was held in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville.

Balik Funeral Home in Spillville handled the arrangements.

Helen, 91, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Helen Barbara Carolan was born Dec. 4, 1921, near Ridgeway, Iowa, the daughter of William and Carrie (Ptacek) Soukup. Helen graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1939. She worked at the Ridgeway Post Office.

On April 22, 1947 she married Frederick Carolan at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa. They lived above the post office in Ridgeway when they were first married. Helen worked for Ridgeway Poultry House for Lee and Grace Kecker and also was a noon cook at the Kozy Korner. Helen enjoyed quilting and making quilts for all of her grandchildren. She liked to play solitaire, read, and make carpet rags for rugs. She enjoyed traveling; making trips to Arizona, Washington, DC, Florida and Kentucky. She especially enjoyed visiting with friends and family, and was always ready to make a pot of coffee for all. Helen was a life-time member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Legion of Mary.

Helen is survived by four sons: Kenneth (Norma) Carolan of Ridgeway, Clifford (Judy) Carolan of Cresco, Randal (Ellen) Carolan of Tucson, Arizona, and Mark (Ruth) Carolan of Ridgeway; two daughters-in-law: Vallori Carolan of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Linda Carolan of Albany, Wisconsin; one sister-in-law: Grace Soukup of Decorah; 11 grandchildren: Stacy (Lauren) Carolan, Jenice (Christopher Hermanson) Carolan, Duane Carolan, Rick Wemark, Carrie (Hari Hassin) Carolan, Neal (Jamie) Carolan, Jenna Carolan, Jason (Sherri) Carolan, Nathan (Bridget) Carolan, Julie Carolan and Eric Carolan; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Frederick Carolan on May 10, 1998; three sons: Walter Carolan in Nov. 2005, Roger Carolan in July 2005 and Stanley Carolan May 1981; one daughter-in-law: Joleen Carolan in 1994; her parents; two brothers: Herman (Elvira) Soukup and Arnold Soukup; brothers and sisters-in-law: Joe (Dorothy) Carolan, Tom (Margaret) Carolan, Jack (Julia) Carolan, Clem (Geraldine) Carolan, Philip Carolan, and Leonard (Cecelia) Carolan.



Raymond Baumgartner, 88

CRESCO - Raymond Baumgartner, 88 of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa. Funeral services will be on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 10 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco, Iowa. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Ray was born on November 24, 1924 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Earnest and Jessie (Hovey) Baumgartner. He married Marjorie Cameron on Oct. 17, 1945. They farmed near Ridgeway until Jan. 1, 1950. He then was an inseminator for Eastern Iowa Breeders until 1964. He then was a salesman for Northeast F.S. Farm Supply Coop for nine years. In September of 1978 he began working at Donaldson Company, Inc. in Cresco, Iowa, until his retirement in 1990. Ray’s passion was harness racing in which he began in 1973 and continued until his retirement.

He is survived by his three children, Robert and twins Randy and Rhonda.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marge.



Pearl M. Krueger, 89

WATERLOO - Pearl Marguerite Krueger, 89, of Waterloo, died Saturday, June 1, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

She was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Howard County, daughter of Jens and Anna Atzen Schmidt. She married Merlyn W. Krueger on Feb. 18, 1943, in Lime Springs. He died May 20, 2010.

She graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1941. Mrs. Krueger worked at J.C. Penney for 25 years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church. For about five years she played with the Kit ‘n Kaboodle Band performing for local nursing homes, and she also sang in the Friendship Village Chorus.

She is survived by: a daughter, Sue (Elvin) Meller of Waterloo; two sons, Merlyn Jr. of Greenleafton, Minnesota, and Davy (Marlene) of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Jacob) Elwart, Scott Meller, Robert Dickson, James (Angela) Dickson, Seth (Jodi) Krueger, Tiffany (Shawn) Moses, Michelle (Joe) Connell, Heather (Paul) Moore and Chad Strausser; 13 great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Gary Dickson of Collierville, Tennessee.

Preceded in death by: her parents; a daughter, Kay Dickson; six sisters, Annabelle Monthy, Vera Billman, Leone Schmidt, Mae Schmidt, Marvel Hughes and Viola Shea; and four brothers, Henry, Roy, Harry and James Schmidt.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home.

Carole J. Otto, 72

BOULDER, COLORADO - Carole J. Otto passed away June 5, 2013 due to kidney failure at Mesa Vista in Boulder. She was 72.

Carole was born on Nov. 10, 1940 in Laurens, Iowa, to Samuel and Janice (Peterson) Richardson. She graduated from Cresco High School in Cresco, Iowa, in 1958 where Carole was a 4.0 student, member of the National Honor Society, and Class Solitarian. On Sept. 26, 1959 she married Wayne Otto in Cresco, Iowa. Together they moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1977.

Carole enjoyed reading, knitting, ceramics, needle point, bowling and playing cards. She will be remembered for her outgoing, gregarious, generous, honest and loving personality. She loved being with people and was always ready to go and enjoy life. She loved animals especially her cats.

Carole was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Jim.

She is survived by her husband Wayne; her children Kerry Moore and Kevin Otto; her grandchildren Kyle Moore, Grant Otto, and Gillian Otto; brothers Gary and Reginald; and sister Jan.

Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel in Colorado. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa. Private burial will take place at a later time at New Oregon Cemetery in Cresco, Iowa.
