MAQUOKETA - A Mass of Christian Burial for James "Jamie" D. Sutton of Maquoketa will be held at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa with Rev. Donald Hertges and Deacon Bob Head officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Maquoketa.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa with a Scripture Service at 8 p.m.

Jamie, 45, died Thursday evening, Sept. 1, 2011 as a result of a boating accident in Duquque.

James Daniel Sutton was born Nov. 9, 1965 in Dubuque, the son of James Sterling and Donna Jean (Hovey) Sutton. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1984 and graduated from Kirkwood Community College in the Ag Production Program in 1986.


On July 25, 1987, he married Johnna Ihns at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Jamie farmed the family farms.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, and a former member of the Jackson County Cattlemen's Association. Jamie was a wonderful friend and neighbor, always willing to help.

Jamie is survived by his wife, Johnna Sutton of Maquoketa; three children: Isaac Sutton of Calmar, Erica and Evan Sutton, at home; a special father figure to his niece, Alesha; his mother: Donna Jean Sutton of Maquoketa; one sister: Jody Kay Sutton of Dubuque; and his paternal grandmother: Florence Sutton of Maquoketa.

He was preceded in death by his father; maternal grandparents; paternal grandfather; and his father-in-law.

Stephen Rose, 56

SPRINGVILLE - Stephen Rose, 56, formerly of Cresco, died Sept. 5 at his home in Springville, Iowa after a long battle with cancer.

Stephen Rose was born Oct. 29, 1954, the son of Gerald and Arletta (Grimm) Rose. He attended St. Joseph Elementary School and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1973. He worked in Cresco and moved to Cedar Rapids to attend Kirkwood Community College. He worked for Wilson Meat Packing Co. which was later sold to Farmstead. He became a construction worker on streets and roads and eventually became employed for the city of Cedar Rapids for 15 years up to the time of his illness.

On May 19, 1979, he married Pam Price in Cedar Rapids.

Stephen loved fishing, hunting, gardening, especially roses and woodworking. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren.


Stephen is survived by his wife, Pam; two sons: Andy (Tiffany) Rose of Centerville, Iowa and Ryan (Brooke) Rose of Marion; one daughter: Ashley (Mark) Luzinski of Springville, Iowa; his parents; two brothers: Jim (Tammy) Rose of Centerville and Joe Rose of Cresco; one sister: Sharon (T-J) Shields of Lakeville, Minn.; and four grandchildren.


 Lorell Christensen, 83

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Lorell D. Christensen of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Reverend Tom Wegener officiating. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Riceville.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville handled the arrangements.

Lorell, 83, lost his courageous, three year battle with pancreatic cancer in his home on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011.

Lorell Delphin Christensen was born Sept. 23, 1927 in Hardy, Neb., the son of Ansgar Emil and Mabel Emily Andrea Christensen. As a teenager, the family moved to Iowa where he graduated from Riceville High School.


On Oct. 3, 1946, he married Reberta Marie Ring. To this union, six children were born: Dee (Jon) Baldock of Verona, Wis.; Dennis (Ann) Christensen of Riceville; Gerald (Lori) Christensen of Nora Springs; Judy (Galen Mehl) Christensen of Lehigh, Iowa; Chris (Cindy) Christensen of Riceville; and Sue (Dan) Barnes of Adams, Minn.

Lorell farmed in the Riceville area until retirement. He enjoyed his winters in Arizona, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fireworks, fishing, golfing, horses, watching chuck wagon races and the Kentucky Derby, card parties with friends, shooting pool, campfires, and traveling.

Following Reberta's death, he married Myrtle Linkenmeyer on Aug. 3, 1991. On this date his family more than doubled with the addition of Myrtle's six children: Kathy Shaw of Riceville; Mary (Jim) Langreck of Lawler; Dona (Lee) Braun of Lakeville, Minn.; Richard (Rita) Linkenmeyer of Riceville; Susan (Craig) Burggraf of Grand Rapids, Minn.; Ruth (Dennis Peyton) Meirick of Kasson, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Lorell is survived by his wife, Myrtle; six children; 12

grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six stepchildren; 25 step-grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren; sisters: Zelda Buse Christensen and Berdean Ring; brother: Merlin (Fay) Christensen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ansgar and Mabel Christensen; his first wife, Reberta Christensen; and his brothers-in-law: Marvin Ring and Earl Buse.


Memorials can be sent to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, The American Cancer Society, and Howard County Hospice.

SPILLVILLE - A Mass of Christian Burial for Merlyn S. Phillips of Spillville will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. The lector is Mathew Phillips, mass servers are Lee Balik, Cole and ZeAnna Phillips, and the offertory giftbearers are Riley and Dahlyn Ott. The organist is Doris Thompson and Dan Silhacek is soloist. The St. Wenceslaus Choir will sing "Be Not Afraid", "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art", "On Eagles Wings", and "Battle Hymn of the Republic". The Eucharistic Ministers are Ann Herold and Dwayne Hauber. Pallbearers are Alan King, Brad Philips, Duane Novotny, Jeff Novotny, Keith Herold and Dave Nienhaus. Interment will be in St. Wenceslaus Church Cemetery in Spillville with military rites by Clarence Bily American Legion Post 467 of Spillville.

Merlyn, 76, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Merlyn Stanley Phillips was born June 30, 1935, the son of Stanley and Lillian (Novotny) Phillips at Ft. Atkinson and attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. He farmed with his parents north of Spillville. Merlyn served in the U.S. Army from 1958-59 in Augsburg, Germany.


On June 17, 1961, he married Mary Herold at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson. They farmed the family farm until 1997. Merlyn enjoyed tinkering in his shop, camping, reading and polka music. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Spillville American Legion Post #467.

Merlyn is survived by his wife: Mary; four sons: Vern (Pam) Phillips of Calmar, Lloyd (Patty) Phillips of New Hampton, Tony (Julie) Phillips of Ridgeway, Ted (Rebecca) Phillips of Calmar; two daughters: Terri (Steve) Balik of Spillville and Becky (Josh) Ott of Spillville; son-in-law: Tom Marhoul of Ridgeway; grandchildren: Matt and Amanda Phillips, Lee Balik, Mitchell Phillips, Cole, ZeAnna and Tessa Phillips, Riley, Dahlyn, Isaiah and Andrew Ott, Lillian and Johnathan Phillips; sister-in-law: Patsy Herold of Ft. Atkinson; two brothers-in-law: Jack (Ann) Herold of Ft. Atkinson and Jerry (Audrey) Herold of North Liberty.

Merlyn was preceded in death by a daughter: Barb Marhoul on Nov. 10, 2010; granddaughter: Brianne Phillips on Aug. 1; his parents: Stanley on Feb. 25, 1993 and Lillian on April 30, 1996; father and mother-in-law: Paul Herold on April 20, 1984 and Theresa Herold on Nov. 12, 1981; brother-in-law: James Herold on Dec. 7, 2009.


Marlyse Neuzil, 81

STEWARTVILLE, MN - A Funeral Mass for Marlyse M. Neuzil, formerly of Spring Valley and Fort Atkinson will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Little Turkey, Iowa.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley with a prayer service held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church in Little Turkey today, Wednesday morning starting at 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish Cemetery in Little Turkey.

Marlyse, 81, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 at the Stewartville Care Center.

Marlyse M. Neuzil was born Nov. 16, 1929 near Ft Atkinson, the daughter of William and Emma (Novak) Jirak. Following the death of her father when she was five years old she devoted her life to caring for her mother.


On May 28, 1951, she married Frank E. Neuzil at Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Little Turkey. They farmed the family farm where she was born and raised. Frank passed away on Oct. 18, 1990. In 1996 she moved to Spring Valley, Minn. where she lived with her daughter Carol. Marlyse was a member of the Jackson Homemakers, the 500 card club for over 30 years, the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Little Turkey and was a member of the Assumption Rosary Society. After moving to Spring Valley she became a member of St Ignatius Catholic Church. She also served as a volunteer at the Spring Valley Care Center and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by three children; Galen (Teresa) Neuzil of Mantorville, Minn., Carol (Kevin Levos) Neuzil of Spring Valley, Minn. and Kevin (Mary Ann) Neuzil of Cresco; four grandchildren: Rachel, Brandon, Megan and Aaron; one brother: Melvin (Eleanor) Jirak of Spillville; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marlyse was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a brother: Richard in 1983.



Clara Andersen

HARMONY, MN - A memorial service for Clara M. Andersen of the Harmony, Minn. and Cresco area will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony.

Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.

Clara died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

Clara was married to Robert (Bob) Andersen.


Clara is survived by six of her seven children; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert on Aug. 18, 2003; and daughter: Jan.

DECORAH - A Mass of Christian Burial for Kenneth "Kenny" J. Funke of Decorah was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Philip Gibbs officiating. The lectors were Kim Hubers and Renee Brinkley, the offertory giftbearers were his grandchildren: Derek Hubers, Christopher Williams, Lonnie Brinkley, Logan and Abby Halverson, ushers were Norbert and Diane Bohr. The organist was Mary Beth Bouska and Cindy Schissel was the cantor. The songs sung were "Be Not Afraid", "Amazing Grace", "On Eagles Wings", "Ave Maria", and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee". Pallbearers were Andy Miller, Chet Miller, Christopher Williams, Dale Lundvedt, Wayne Drilling, Fred Gerleman and Ryan Paulsen. Interment will be in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery in Decorah with military rites by Waukon veterans.

Kenny, 68, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. after a short illness.

Kenneth Joseph Funke was born Aug. 13, 1943 in Cresco, the son of Hugo and Ethel (Drilling) Funke. Kenny attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1962. He served in the US Army from 1962-65 and was stationed in Korea.


On Nov. 12, 1966, he married Ruth Setter at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. Kenny worked at Svenson Construction, Lang's Dairy, and Deco Products, until he retired in 2008.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing with his grandchildren, going to flea markets with his wife and reading. Kenny was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #4208, where he was a third degree member and the Waukon American Legion Post #62 for 33 years.

Kenny is survived by his wife, Ruth Funke of Decorah; three daughters: Kim (Howard) Hubers of Brandon, S.D., Renee (Bryan) Brinkley of Lake City, Fla., and Tracy (Chad) Halverson of Decorah; five grandchildren: Derek Hubers, Christopher Williams, Lonnie Brinkley, Logan and Abby Halverson; his mother: Ethel Funke of Cresco; one brother: Neil (Michelle) Funke of Cresco; five sisters: Joyce (Jim) Miller of Rochester, Minn., Janet Funke of San Diego, Calif., Joan (Ivan) Permann of American Falls, Idaho, Betty Funke of Aurora, Colo., and Norma (Bruce) Paulsen of Glenville, Minn.; his mother-in-law: Marie Setter of Ft. Atkinson; four sisters-in-law: Margaret (Arnold) Lundtvedt of Caledonia, Minn., Agnes (Anthony) Kruse of Ft. Atkinson, Verna (Harold) Lee of Decorah, and Ella Smith of Cape Coral, Fla.; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kenny was preceded in death by his father: Hugo Funke in 1966; his grandparents: Henry and Johanna Funke and Matt and Catherine Drilling; his father-in-law: Gerhard Setter in 2001; and two brothers-in-law: Jerry Magnuson in 1988 and Wes Smith in 2007.

Linda Lundak, 63

ALBERT LEA, MN - Funeral services for Linda K. Lundak were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minn.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18 at Bonnerup Funeral Home in Albert Lea.

Linda, 63, died at home with her family Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, after a four month battle with terminal cancer.

Linda Kay Lundak was born Feb. 6, 1948 in Cresco, the daughter of Norman and Irene (Anderson) Hove.


On June 11, 1967, she married David Rudolph Lundak at Orleans Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. They moved to Winona in 1967 and then to Albert Lea in 1983. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.

Linda was a homemaker and loved spending time at home with family and friends. She enjoyed traveling to warm vacation spots in the winter. Her favorite season was spring when she could fill her deck and porch with flowers.

Linda is survived by her husband, David; son: Chad (Kim) Lundak, Drew, Madi, Bergan; daughter: Terri Lundak; son: Steven (Cheyenne) Lundak and Keygan; two sisters: Sharron (Vern) Meyer and Connie (Allyn) Linderbaum; a brother: John (Carol) Hove; an aunt: Alice Anderson; an uncle: Raymond Anderson; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws: Rudolph and Irene (Vopava) Lundak; and nephew: Kirk John Hove.

Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church of Albert Lea and Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea Hospice.

Brian Sovereign, 38

EYOTA, MN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Brian A. Sovereign of Eyota, Minn. was held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Brian, 38, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011.

Brian Allen Sovereign was born Dec. 29, 1972 in Cresco, the son of James and Susan (Czaplewski) Sovereign. He attended Crestwood Elementary, Jr. High, and High School. He graduated from Crestwood High School in 1991. Brian went on to play football at Rochester Community College.


On Feb. 1, 2002, he married Carolina Diaz-Diaz. Brian and Carolina later divorced. He was employed for 16 years at IBM in Rochester, Minn. Brian was excited about his new job offer to run a Fitness Center in Waverly, Iowa.

Brian loved his family and friends and they always came first. He enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball, fishing, golfing, and hunting. Brian never went too far without his black lab, L.T. He always made every day count and his fun-loving and caring personality made him a special part of many people's lives.

Survivors include his parents: James and Susan Sovereign; two sisters: Paula (Mike) Galvin and Kristine (Mark) Voves both of Cresco; he treasured his nieces and nephews: Nathan and Riley Galvin, and Jordan and Ashley Voves. Other survivors include his ex-wife Carolina Sovereign and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Brian was preceded in death by his grandparents: Alois and Helen (Burgdorf) Czaplewski and Gerald and Elsie (Frank) Sovereign; three aunts: Connie (Sovereign) Markham, Joan (Czaplewski) Cisewski, and Carol (Czaplewski) Tews; three uncles: Robert Czaplewski, Clyde Cisewski, and Kent Markham; and his beloved black lab, L.T.


Naomi Clark, 90

AUSTIN, MN - Funeral services for Naomi Clark of Austin, Minn. formerly of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Naomi, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin, Minn. following a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's.

Naomi Clark was born Sept. 23, 1920, the daughter of Patrick and Elsie (Sharp) Gallagher.


On March 27, 1940 she married Glen Clark in Bluffton, Iowa, and they moved to Cresco in 1954. Glen later died in 1983.

Naomi is survived by three daughters: Zeta (Mike) Rynders of Waukesha, Wis., Martha Clark of Cedar Rapids, and Jane (Mark) Oberbroeckling of Austin, Minn.; one sister: Ruth Smith of Hemet, Calif.; six grandchildren: Katie (Rodger) Runyan of Muskego, Wis.; Emily (Mike) Hanizeski of Greendale, Wis.; Jason (Rachel) McCarville of Atkins, Iowa; Joe (Erica) McCarville of North Liberty; Curtis Oberbroeckling and Kyle Oberbroeckling both of Austin, Minn.; six great-grandchildren: Madelyn and Sam Runyan; Mason, Adam and Ella Hanizeski, and Mya Naomi McCarville; and two step grandchildren: Chance and Baylee.


Dale Nilges, 79

SARATOGA - Funeral services for Dale A. Nilges of Saratoga were held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in rural Elma with Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Interment was in St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church Cemetery with military honors.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville handled the arrangements.

Dale, 79, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 at the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center in Riceville where he has lived since November of 2010.

Dale Alden Nilges was born June 23, 1932 in rural Adair County, the son of Paul and Frances (Wortman) Nilges. He attended country schools and graduated in 1951 from Des Moines Township Schools. Dale served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1953 to 1955. He farmed with his father and brother in Britt.


On Aug. 9, 1958, he married Genevieve Joan Nelson at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. They moved to Sumner in 1959 and lived there for 13 years before moving to rural Elma where they purchased the family farm. Dale retired from farming in 2001.

He loved restoring tractors, camping and loved to travel.

He is survived by a son: Bruce (Deanna) Nilges of Elma; two daughters: Lora (Randy) Young of Maxwell, Iowa, and Lisa (Doug) Rose of Fort Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren: Jason, Matthew and Kirsten Nilges, Holly, Travis and Brittany Young and Julia, Logan, Sydney and Orion Rose; a twin brother: Dean (Charlene) Nilges of Fredericksburg; a sister: Darlene (Donald) Hansmeier of Corwith, Iowa; and a good friend: Aileen Kirchoff; and many relatives and friends.
