CRESCO - Funeral services for Edythe J. Price were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Edythe, 93, died peacefully Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco surrounded by family.

Edythe Josephine Price was born Aug. 14, 1917 in Grand Meadow, Minn., the second daughter of Joseph and Ella (Florand) Peterson. She graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1935. For several years Edythe was employed by Temanson's Grocery in her home town.


On April 11, 1943, she married Edwin I. Price in the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church. After returning from the east coast where Edwin was serving in the Navy, they made their home in Lime Springs. They owned and operated Price's Grocery and Dry Goods for many years.

Edythe was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church until its closing in 1994. She was currently a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to garden and enjoyed golf.

Edythe is survived by three children: Jane (Jens) Kallevang of Waukon, Anita (Kipp) Skaden of Culver City, Calif. and John (Alice) Price of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin; granddaughter: Jessica Kallevang; parents: Joseph and Ella Peterson; and sister: Melba Ries.



William Meyerhoff, 56

LONG GROVE, IA - Funeral services for William L. Meyerhoff of Long Grove were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge. Interment was in the Long Grove Cemetery in Long Grove, Iowa.

William, 56, died Saturday, July, 16 2011 at his home surrounded by family.

William Lewis Meyerhoff was born June 11, 1955 in New Hampton, the son of Louis and Betty (Roethler) Meyehoff. William worked as a machine operator at John Deere Davenport Works for 34 years. He was a member of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) and the John Deere Union.

William enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson, fishing, hunting, woodworking and spending time with family and friends.


He is survived by his daughters: Amy (Colin) Mangan and Tina (Jason) Ferrel, both of Davenport; his grandchildren: Gabriel and Lily; his fiancee: Dee Dague of Long Grove; his parents: Louis and Betty Meyerhoff of Dubuque; sisters: Sheila (Richard) Martens of Lime Springs, Karla (Brian) Leichty of North Liberty and Brenda (Tom) Huff of Cascade; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and his dog: Abbie.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; a sister: Debbie Voves; and several aunts and uncles.


Evelyn Mrachek, 90

CHARLES CITY - A funeral Mass for Evelyn M. Mrachek of Charles City will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Reverend Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3. A Rosary will be held at 5 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Evelyn, 90, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Evelyn Marie Mrachek was born March 13, 1921, in Winneshiek County, the daughter of Albert and Rose (Havel) Triska. She attended school at Spillville.


On Nov. 18, 1941, she married Clarence Mrachek. They moved to Charles City in 1966.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Her interests included attending auctions, playing bingo and cards, listening to polka music, gardening and collecting salt and pepper shakers. They always looked forward to the annual Salsbury Chemical picnics where there was always plenty of food, fellowship and fun and also Czech Days in Protivin.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her daughter: Sharon (Hal Miller) Heise of Ionia; four grandchildren: Michael (DeAnne) Mrachek, Sunday (Nathan) Tostenson, Jolene (Travis) Bilharz and Janel (Travis) Jones; eight great-grandchildren: Jordan Mrachek, Alysha Bilharz, Mackenzy Bilharz, Katlyn Mrachek, Jacob Mrachek, Kaleb Bilharz, Megan Tostenson and Abby Tostenson; and two daughters-in-law: Connie Mrachek of Charles City and Carol Mrachek-Sawyer of Burnsville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence on Aug. 31, 1997; twin sons: Jerry and Larry Mrachek; a grandson: Ricky Mrachek; her parents; a brother: Leonard Triska; a brother-in-law and his wife, Joseph and Mayme Mrachek; and a sister-in-law: Gladys Kostka.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Karen A. Fritz of Waterloo were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Karen, 59, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, surrounded by her family.

Karen Adell Fritz was born Feb. 20, 1952 in Cresco, the daughter of Vernon and Rose (Timmerman) Reuter. She attended Cresco schools.

In 1972 she married Martin (Buck) Comstock. And in 1974 they moved to San Diego, Calif. Buck and Karen later divorced and Karen moved back to the Cresco area in 1983. On Dec. 31, 1985, she married Gary V. Fritz. In 1988 they moved to Fayette and in 2001 they moved to Waterloo.

Karen enjoyed camping, traveling, karaoke, playing pool and being with friends, family and her cat Shelby. She collected many salt and pepper shakers from all over the USA. Karen was vice president of the Aerie 764 Women Auxiliary, and volunteered work with the Eagles Club in Waterloo.

Karen is survived by a daughter: Melissa (Steve) Jensen of Cresco; son: Marcus (Lola) Comstock of Spring Valley, Ill.; stepson: Jeremy (Misty) LaPlant of Waterloo; stepdaughter: Jaime (Jeremy) Ruckdashel of Clermont; sisters: Ruby (Gordon) Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Ruth Leferink of Riceville, and Ida (Don) Zakostelecky of Lime Springs; brother: Robert (Phyllis) Reuter of Waterloo; brother-in-law: Frank Zakostelecky; sister-in-law: Shirleen (Greg) Rosendahl of Waukon; grandchildren: Breannah, Nicole and Joshua Jensen, Austin Comstock, Kaylee LaPlant and Zachary, Alison, Isiah, Levi and Tara Ruckdashel; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister: Helen Zakostelecky.


Donald Berka, 63

CRESCO - A funeral mass for Donald J. Berka of Ridgeway were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Donald, 63, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011 in Medina, Ohio of natural causes.

Donald J. Berka was born April 24, 1948, in Cresco, the son of Joseph and Georgine Berka. He graduated from Notre Dame high school in 1966. During high school he worked at Ben Franklin's in Cresco, and following high school he worked for Louis Balk Lime and Ready-Mix. After leaving Balk's he followed his life-long dream and became an over-the-road trucker.

On Aug. 14, 1976, he married Valerie (Carter) Berka in Cresco. They lived in Cresco until 1978, then moved to an acreage near Ridgeway. After they moved to Ridgeway, Donald again worked for Balk's until 1992, when he went back to driving semi. He remained in the trucking profession until his death.

Donald enjoyed gardening, collecting, watching sports, and handiwork. He was an avid follower of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Dallas Cowboys. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and playing with his grandchildren. Donald was a lifelong member of Assumption and Notre Dame Parishes.

He is survived by two sons: Kevin (Julie) Carter of Cresco and Josh (Angie) Berka of Iowa City; four grandchildren: Beth Carter of Onawa, Iowa; Kristina, Chance and Connor Carter, of Cresco; two sisters: Deb (Lester) Hyke of Cresco and Doris (Tom) Taylor of Versailles, Ky.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Georgine Berka; and a brother-in-law: Phil Wolfe.



Gladice Borseth, 81

CRESCO - Funeral services for Gladice Borseth of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Gladice, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Gladice Borseth was born Jan. 21, 1930, in rural Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Louise (Ratz) Peter. She attended rural schools in the Cresco area and graduated from Cresco High School. After earning a teaching certificate from Luther College, Gladice taught at rural grade schools until she married. In later years, she worked at Jack & Jill grocery, Harrison's Variety Store, and as an assistant at Foley Chiropractic Clinic.

On Oct. 7, 1952, she married Melvin Borseth in Cresco. They were married for 53 years until his death in 2006.

Gladice was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. Auxilliary.

Survivors include a daughter: Kathy Tate of Lawrence, Kan.; a brother: Jerry (Janice) Peter of Dubuque; a sister: Vera Price of Cresco; sisters-in-law: Irene Slifka and Lucy Borseth of Cresco; brother-in-law: Dan Slifka of Cresco and Lyola McGee of Gilbertville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters: Viola Peter and Marion McGee; a brother: Mike Peter; and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Gladice's memory to Evans Memorial Home PR Committee, the First Lutheran Church or an organization of the donor's choice.

Paul Ryan, 75

ROCKFORD, IL - Funeral services for Paul E. Ryan of Rockford, Ill. will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco with Father Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, rural Cresco.

Paul, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 at his home in Rockford.

Paul Edward Ryan was born Sept. 11, 1935, the son of Gerald and Minnie (Broghammer) Ryan of rural Cresco. He attended rural country school and Ridgeway Public school through eighth grade. He helped his father on the farm, until he entered the Air Force for four years, spending most of the time in Japan. He attended McConnell Airline school in Minneapolis, Minn. He worked for nearly 40 years at O'Hara Field for United Air Lines in Chicago before retiring.

On Dec. 12, 1976, he married Evelyn Piemonte in Chicago with a reception held in Ridgeway. They lived in Chicago for several years before moving to Rockford.

He enjoyed coming back to the farm, especially seeing the crops and the modern machinery and enjoyed operating some of the machinery. Harvest time was his favorite time as he would be operating the field chopper and helping fill silos for neighbors as well as the family farm. He loved his brothers and sisters and all of his nieces and nephews. His friends were always waiting for him so they could go out to eat and reminiscence. From Olds, Buick to Cadillac he was always proud of his cars.

Paul is survived by his wife, Evelyn; step son: Larry (Kay) Piemonte of Carol Stream; step daughter: Linda Upton of Evanston; two step grandsons: Evan and Philip Piemonte; one step great-granddaughter: Seiryu Piemonte; three sisters: Anna Myers, of Ridgeway, Joan (Leo) McGavick of Hayden, Idaho, and Gerry (Les) Sorenson of Decorah; three brothers: Tom (Elsie), Phil (Ellen) and Dean (Marcie,), all of Cresco; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Mary Henry; brother: Robert Ryan; also an infant brother: Norman; infant sister: Shirley; nieces: Diane Bruening and Jennifer Zweibohmer; nephew: Nicholas Sorenson; and brother-in-law: Gene Myers.

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Eleanor M. Tupy of Cresco was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Rev. Dennis H. Cahill officiating. The lector was LeRoy Webb and gift carriers were Gloria Tupy and Janet Tupy. The pianist was Suzanne Ollendick and the song leader was Katie Ferrie. The pallbearers were: Steven Tupy, Allen Tupy, Michael Tupy, Joanne Reicks, Colleen Gallagher, and Deann Pair. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Eleanor, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco. She had been living at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Eleanor Mabel Tupy was born July 26, 1921 in Cresco, the daughter of Art and Lydia Wentworth.

After Eleanor and Daniel's marriage in 1941, they settled into farming east of Cresco in Winneshiek County. Eleanor learned the ways of being a Bohemian farm wife after being raised a city girl. She very successfully supported the family farm enterprise until moving into Cresco in 1991. In later years, Eleanor and Dan snowbirded to Mesa, Ariz. where they often entertained their family and friends from Cresco. Eleanor and Daniel were married 57 years until his death in 1998.

Eleanor is survived by two sons: Dale and Gary; six grandchildren: Steven Tupy, Allen Tupy, Michael Tupy, Joanne Reicks, Colleen Gallagher, and Deann Tupy Pair; 13 great-grandchildren: Kristin Tupy Babic, Omar Amador Tupy, Jose Amador Tupy, Jasmin Tupy, Carina Tupy, Joshua Tupy, Sarah Tupy Balk, Lisa Tupy, Kyrah Jo Reicks, Patrick Gallagher, Marcella Wolf, Cory Pair and Amber Pair; four great-great-grandchildren: Onnalyse Amador Pollard, Edin Babic, Skyler Amador Tupy, and Bryce Tupy; and siblings: Dorothy Slifka, Betty Farghum, Helen Fuller, Hazel Walker, Roger Wentworth and Gene Wentworth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; son: Dean; grandson: Jeffrey Tupy; one brother: Floyd Wentworth; and a sister: Mary Walton.

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Mary L. Eastman of Riceville will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville. Interment will be in Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire, Iowa.

Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville and also one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Mary, 93, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 at the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center.

Jean Lyon, 73

LIME SPRINGS - A memorial service for Myra "Jean" Lyon of Lime Springs will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.

Friends may greet the family one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco is handling the arrangements.

Jean, 73, died quietly at her home Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011 after a 30-year struggle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Myra Jean Lyon was born Sept. 18, 1937 in Penn Valley, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia, the daughter of Harmon and Myra Monnik. She attended Lower Merion High School. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. with a major in Latin and minors in French and German. While on a family trip to Paris, France, she met Donald Lyon. They were married at the American Church in Paris on April 9, 1960.

Jean and Donald lived in Lime Springs for the past 50 years. Jean was very active for many years with Eastern Star as a District Instructor as well as Grand Chaplain, and later served for many years as the Lime Springs City Clerk.

Jean is survived by her husband, Donald "Doc" of Lime Springs; two sons: David (Veronica) and Bruce (Christine); a daughter: Carolyn (Westan) James; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a sister: Carol (Edward) Huth; a cousin: Jean (Gershon) Levinson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Elmarie Bouska, 88

PROTIVIN - A Memorial Mass for Elmarie E. Bouska of Protivin was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March officiating. The lectors were Sally McCoy Diane Novak and Margie Moen, the offertory gifts were carried by Nick and Tim Kuennen and Sally Tieskoetter. The organist was Marlene Pecinovsky and Miriam Humpal was soloist. The songs sung were "Gentle Woman", "Amazing Grace", "Though the Mountains May Fall", "Peace is Flowing Like a River", "Goin Home" and "Let There Be Peace on Earth". Interment will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin at a later date. Elmarie donated her body to Mayo Clinic for medical education.

Elmarie, 88, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011 of cancer at home surrounded by her loving family.

Elmarie E. Bouska was born Oct. 8, 1922 on the family farm located north of Protivin, in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of Edward F. and Regina (Huber) Novak. She attended Holy Trinity School and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin.

On Feb. 24, 1941, she married Edward Bouska. Edward and Elmarie shared 68 happy years together on their farm in Jackson Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Elmarie with her culinary skills and listening ear welcomed friends and visitors from all over the world into her home. She was a community leader in 4-H, Country Road Players Community Theater, Winneshiek County Mental Health Association, TOPS, Jackson Homemakers and several church groups. Elmarie and Ed counseled couples in how to have a happy marriage. They also assisted people in facing death and were leaders in the faith community. Elmarie taught community education classes in The Art of Bread Baking. She self-published a book by the same name as well as a book of stories about her childhood called "The Joys of a Simple Life". Elmarie loved music, especially jazz. She loved to cook, entertain, travel, spend time with her family and garden. Her husband, Ed, made her a greenhouse that she enjoyed every spring. Elmarie lived on the farm with assistance of caregivers as her cancer progressed. She accepted life on life's terms and faced challenges with grace and dignity.

In lieu of flowers, Elmarie requested memorials be given to Winneshiek County Hospice, 901 Montgomery St., Decorah, IA 52101 or Catholic Charities of Dubuque, 1229 Mount Loretta Ave., Dubuque, IA 52003.

Elmarie is survived five children: Jack and wife June Bouska of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Sally and husband Tom McCoy of Edgerton, Wis.; Ann Novak and husband Larry Hartford of Burlington, Wa.; Margaret (Peg) Bouska of Iowa City; and Carol Bouska and husband Jeremy Iggers of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren: Les Bouska and Lynn Wayne and husband Greg (Jack and June Bouska), Tess Bouska and friend, Alejandro Castelli (Mary Jane Bouska), Kate McCoy and husband Rob Young, Mary and Jen McCoy and friend, Derek Apel (Sally and Tom McCoy), Bret Taggart (Ann Novak), Micha Reiter (Carol and Jeremy); six great-grandchildren: Matthew, Ryan and Kristina Bouska (Paul Bouska) Shannon and Nicholas Wayne (Lynn Wayne) and Owen McCoy Young (Kate McCoy).

Elmarie was preceded in death by her husband Edward; her children: Mary Jane and Allan, her grandchildren: Paul and Sara; great-grandchild: Connor; and her siblings: Ernie and Lloyd Novak and Olivette Novak Rock.


Gerald Drake, 74

CRESCO - Funeral services for Gerald "Jerry" F. Drake of Cresco were held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011 at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Michael Carey officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Jerry, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 at the Howard Residential Care Facility in Cresco.

Gerald Francis Drake was born Feb. 4, 1937, the son of William McKinley Drake and Ida Amalie (Bigalk) Drake. Jerry grew up and resided on the family farm near Kendallville. He continued to farm and reside there until he was forced to relocate a few years ago due to health issues. Jerry lived a simple farmer's life, spending most of his time tending to his crops, livestock, and taking care of his tractors and other farm equipment. He also did a great deal of tinkering and fixing his autos and had a knack for keeping things running well beyond their typical usable life. Later in life, Jerry enjoyed listening to his police scanner, the leisure of watching television, and enjoyed his smokeless tobacco.

He is survived by niece: Denise (Flatland) Rohm of Coralville, nephew: Dean Flatland of Hampshire, Ill., niece: Dawn (Flatland) Mackenburg of Cresco; great-nephews: Zachary, Nicholas, and Alexander Rohm; great-niece: Kylie Rohm of Coralville, great-nieces: Ashley, Amber, Jessica, Jennifer, Casey, and Cadence Flatland of Hampshire, Ill., great-nieces Kristen and Hailey Mackenburg; and great-nephew: Hunter Mackenburg of Cresco.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother: Lester; and his sister: Margaret Flatland.
