Tamara Greg Hammond, 76

CRESCO - Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. Michael Massa officiated the service. Burial took place in the New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Tamara Greg Hammond, 76, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011, at her home in Cresco, Iowa.

Tamara was born on June 17, 1935, in Russia, to Gregory and Alexandra (Johnson) Egorenko. She attended country school in Saratoga.

Tamara was united in marriage to Frank Hammond on July 11, 1968. She worked for a factory in Waterloo prior to her marriage to Frank and then was a housewife. Tamara was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, fishing and gardening.


Tamara is survived by her sister Galina Caldemeyer of Marion, Iowa, brother Alex (Ardyce) Egorenko of Minneapolis, Minn., nieces Jody and Teresa, nephew Sam, along with several great nieces and nephews.

Tamara was preceded in death by her parents Gregory and Alexandra, husband Frank, brother Val and brother-in-law Sam Caldemeyer.



Donald Henry Morasch, 85

RICEVILLE - Donald Henry Morasch age 85, of Riceville, Iowa passed away on October 27, 2011 in grand Meadow, Minn. Funeral services were held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in rural St. Ansgar, Iowa.


Lester Wenceslaus Humpal, 71

CALMAR - Lester Wenceslaus Humpal, 71, of rural Calmar, Iowa died October 28, 2011 after fighting pancreatic cancer for 17 months. Lester was able to pass peacefully at home, surrounded by family, while overlooking the farm. He faced his illness with courage and dignity and was an inspiration to family, friends and to those who treated him during that time. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 2 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Trinity Church Cemetery. Visitation was held from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 1 at the Conway-Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 123 N Main St. Protivin, Iowa, where the rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and a parish scripture service will be held at 6 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the church service on Wednesday.

Lester Wenceslaus Humpal was born April 14, 1940 to Adolph W. and Ludmilla (Kuboushek) Humpal in Decorah, Iowa. He graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, Iowa. On June 20, 1961 Lester was united in marriage to Edith M. Crow at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. He worked for Donaldson Company, Inc. for 41 years, retiring September 2006. At the Donaldson Company he was a Production Line Supervisor for 39 years. Lester was on the media team for Donaldson and traveled to different plant locations in Syracuse, N.Y., Frankfort, Ind., and Stevens Point, Wis. He also enjoyed playing on their company softball team for 14 years. Lester enjoyed many camping trips with his family as well as with the Boy Scouts.

Lester had great pride in his children and grandchildren and their many accomplishments and made time to travel across the country to attend their events. He enjoyed watching his children show 4-H cattle. Lester was always available to help his children out with any carpentry or home repairs that needed to be done. One year he traveled out to Maryland to finish his son’s basement. He always put others before himself.

Lester was a Scout Master for 31 years. Under his leadership, 21 boys attained the rank of Eagle Scout. During his time with the Boy Scouts of America he received the St. George Award, Order of the Arrow and Silver Beaver Award. Lester was the School Board President at Holy Trinity Catholic School for several years, and President of the St. Wenceslaus Heritage Society. He was a world traveler with a highlight of personally meeting Pope John Paul II and shaking his hand. Lester was a life-long member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Lester loved going on family vacations, hosting bonfires for his family and friends, cooking and tending his vegetable and flower garden. He also enjoyed collecting toy farm tractors.


Lester is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Edith of Calmar, Iowa; seven children, Lana (Kevin) Duff of Des Moines, Iowa, Donna (Mike Pash) Humpal of Nevada, Iowa, Lester A. (Penny) Humpal of Lakeville, Minn., Richard (Tammy) Humpal of Ankeny, Iowa, Lawrence (Rebecca) Humpal of Hollywood, Md., Theresa (Stephen) Jeandron of New Orleans, La., and SSgt. Katherine Humpal of Whiteman AFB, Mo.; 21 grandchildren, Meghan (Jim) Klier, Michael Duff (Jessica Wilson), Nicholas Duff, Courtney Duff, and Zachary Duff, Madeleine, Isabelle, and Benjamin Humpal-Pash, Tyler, Lolly, and Sydney Veenstra, Amy (Dan) Anselment and Andrew Carroll, Jacob, Hannah, and Elizabeth Humpal, Nicole, Nathan, and Noelle Humpal, Lauren and Labran Jeandron; 6 great grandchildren, Dylan and Daniel Klier, Quimby Duff, Olivia, Caden and Isabella Anselment; 20 foster children; brothers and sister, Adolph (Miriam), Cletus (Maxine), Lorraine, and Roger Humpal; his father-in-law Theodore W. (EdnaMae) Crow, numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

The family of Lester would like to thank all his family, friends and caregivers for their compassionate care and support of Lester.

Joseph Chihak, 84

ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph C. Chihak of Elma was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes. Military rites provided by Elma American Legion John Frahm Post #597.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 with a 4:30 Rosary and a 6 p.m. scriptural wake service at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Joseph, 84, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 at Regional Health Services in Cresco.

Joseph Charles Chihak was born April 12, 1927 in Lourdes, the son of Joseph and Rose (Praska) Chihak. He attended country school, Lourdes Catholic School, and went on to graduate from Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma in 1945. After graduating from high school he spent his life on a farm near Lourdes, where he lived until he passed. He entered the US Army on Feb 10, 1953 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in Feb 1955. While in the Army he was selected for and participated in Guided Missile Training School.


On Sept. 20, 1960, he married Marlene Ann Meyer at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. Following the marriage the couple farmed near Lourdes and Joseph ran a mechanics shop, "Chihak Garage" with his father. He was a devoted member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, taxidermy, gardening, watching all sports, dancing, playing euchre, loved animals (dogs, cats, birds, etc), and spending time with family. He had the gift of gab, and loved telling stories with the ultimate goal to make everyone laugh. His greatest joy was spending time with his six children, seven grandchildren and his oversized Chihuahua, Chico.

Joseph is survived by his children: Tim Chihak of Cresco, Jean (Nick Miller) Chihak of Winterset, Barb (Shawn) Ollendieck of Bettendorf, Tom Chihak of Lourdes, Teresa (Scott) Stevenson of Elma, and Todd Chihak of Jerico; seven grandchildren: Alexa Chihak, Taylor and Zachary Schlatter, Dylan and Ethan Ollendieck and Joey and Brady Stevenson; his brother: Robert (Eileen) Chihak of Lourdes; his sister: Mary Valvoda of Lourdes; his sisters-in-law: Carol DeVoe of Oelwein, Shirley Chihak of Atkins, Iowa and Kathy Meyer of Spillville.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene in 2002; his parents; his brother: Paul; his brothers-in-law: Raymond Valvoda, Lewis Meyer and Mike Meyer; and his sister-in-law: Dawn Van Scayoc.



Lottie Good, 100

BLUFFTON - Funeral services for Lottie A. Good were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah with Pastor Don Cox of First Assembly of God in Waterloo officiating. Organist was Kathy Murray. Soloist Russell Guyer sang "Where The Roses Never Fade" and "I'll See You In The Rapture". Congregational hymns were "Sweet Hour of Prayer", "On Eagle's Wings", and "In The Garden". Pallbearers were: Gerald Brandt, Ralph Brown, Danny Dawley, Nathan Dawley, Wayne Dawley, and Daryl Masters. Interment was in Bluffton Cemetery in Bluffton.

Visitation was held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 at the Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Lottie, 100, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, 2011 at Wellington Place in Decorah.

Lottie Ann Good was born Dec. 5, 1910 in the family's log cabin on the banks of Pine Creek north of Bluffton, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Cordelia (Crane) Dawley. She attended rural schools and high school in Decorah.
On April 11, 1935, she married Ecil M. Good in Decorah. Also, for the last 67 years, a special niece, Joyce Brandt, has lived with them. Joyce has helped care for Lottie the last number of years. Lottie and Ecil farmed for many years near Bluffton and enjoyed working on their land, tending the earth they so greatly cared for. She also liked to garden and did a lot of canning. Her son Charley now farms the home farm in Bluffton.

She had a strong Christian faith, was a long time member of the Assembly of God Church in Cresco and she taught Sunday School for many years.

Lottie is survived by two sons: Charley E. (Sandy) Good of Decorah and David R. (Rosa) Good of Waterloo; six grandsons: Lathan Good of Winona, Minn., Lance (Kim) Good of Washburn, Iowa, Russell (Jody) Good of Eyota, Minn., Ryan (Mandy) Good of Rochester, Minn., Mitchell Good of Rochester, Minn. and Eli Good of Waterloo; one granddaughter: Kristy Good of Decorah; three great-grandchildren; one sister: Vyra Masters of Canton, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews; including a special niece: Joyce Brandt of Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ecil on Jan. 6, 1994; her parents; eight brothers: Edwin, Thomas, Harry, Clarence, John, Jessie, Roscoe and Clifford; and two sisters: Grace Morgan and Mabel Brandt.


Jimmie Wellborn, 72

CRESCO - Jimmie D. Wellborn, 72, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco. There were no services held. Friends called from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Jimmie D. Wellborn was born Sept. 30, 1939, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of Chester and Norma (Smith) Wellborn. He graduated from high school in Kirksville, Mo.

On Feb. 14, 1958, he married Georgeanna Bass. He served in the National Guard for 13 years. Jimmie worked for Donaldson Company in Kirksville until 1984 and then in Cresco from 1985 until he retired after 30 years of service.

He enjoyed building primitive furniture. Jimmie liked football, where he enjoyed rooting for the Dallas Cowboys and baseball, where he was an avid Cardinal fan.


Jimmie is survived by his wife, Georgeanna of Cresco; daughter: Roxanne Wellborn of Cresco and daughter: Shari Mayo of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren: Emily, Amanda and Rebecca Moore, all of St. Louis, Mo.; and sister: Betty Gore of Kansas City, Mo.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents: Chester and Norma; and brothers: Leslie, Wes and Earl.

Roger Mohs, 80

BEND, OR - A memorial service for Roger W. Mohs of Bend, Ore. was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 at the Bend Christian Fellowship Church.

Roger, 80, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011.

Roger William Mohs was born Feb. 15, 1931 in Cresco, the son of Carl and Sophie (Henning) Mohs. He attended Cresco High School where he excelled in football and wrestling, graduating in 1949.

He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. While stationed in Port Hueneme, Calif. he met and married Barbara Florand of Norwalk, Calif. on July 17, 1953. He served two tours of duty in the Philippines.


After leaving the military, he went to work for General Telephone Co. of Calif. as a lineman, installer and repairman, moving on to management as a supervisor in Marina Del Rey, Calif. for 30 years. During this time, he was very active in the Optimist Club of Mar Vista, Calif. for several years serving as president and secretary-treasurer, retiring in 1986.

His pleasures were golfing, fishing and hunting with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter: Carol Jensen (Kris) of Salem, Ore.; son: Mark (Tammy) of Redondo Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren: Brian of Denver, Colo., Laura and Jeffrey of Portland, Ore.; and two step grandchildren: Jana and Erik of Redondo Beach, Calif.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents.

Kristin, 19, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.


Kristin Suzanne Easley was born May 13, 1992 in Rochester, Minn., the daughter of Thomas and Barb (Hinders) Easley. She graduated from Fillmore Central High School in Harmony, Minn. in 2010. After high school she lived with her sister Kayla in Cresco and spent time with Ayden and Hailee and also went trucking with her father. She was attending Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Iowa majoring in Psychology. Kristin loved shoes and had an extensive collection.

She is survived by her parents, Thomas and Barb of Preston; two brothers: SSgt. of the USMC, Joshua (Jessica) Easley of Phoenix, Ariz. and Darren Easley of Preston; three sisters: Amanda Easley of Seattle, Wash., Kayla Easley of Cresco, and Katelin Easley of Preston; one niece: Hailee; and one nephew: Ayden Easley of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather: Kneal Hinders.


Wanda Koliha, 87

HARMONY, MN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Wanda A. Koliha of Harmony, Minn. was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony Minn. Interment was in Bristol Center Cemetery.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony handled the arrangements.

Wanda, 87, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 at the Harmony Health Care Center in Harmony.

Wanda A. Koliha was born Oct. 6, 1924 in rural Granger, Minn., the daughter of Michael and Ella (Peterson) Scanlon.

Doris Hubka, 81

CRESCO - Funeral services for Doris M. Hubka of Cresco were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, Conway Chapel in Cresco. The American Legion Auxiliary held a service at 7 p.m. and a Parish scripture wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Doris, 81, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco after a nine month battle with cancer.

Doris M. Hubka was born Jan. 20, 1930 in Canton, Minn., the daughter of Eugene P. and Ruth (Kvam) Rice. She had one older brother Wayne and one sister Mavis. Doris always had stories to tell of growing up in rural Minnesota and walking to school with cousins and friends, who she kept in touch with to this day. Her dad was a milk hauler and in her early high school days moved the family to Cresco.


Doris loved numbers and bookkeeping and while still in high school became the bookkeeper for the Cresco Vet Clinic. After high school graduation in 1947, she kept books for Interstate Power where she met and married Fred Hubka, who came in to sign up for electricity. They had met at Matters at a dance, and he found out where she worked and made sure to have an excuse to look her up. They married in January of 1952.

During these years Doris worked as a cashier at Grimm's Grocery Store and later the Red Owl Grocery Store. She worked more than 20 years at the Howard County Treasurer's Office, eventually becoming Deputy Treasurer.

Doris was active and held office in many organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW, St. Joseph's Altar and Rosary Society, Cresco Hospital Auxiliary, and served more than 20 years on the Care Review Board for Regional Health Services.

After 50 years of marriage, Fred Hubka died in July of 2002. She married an old high school sweetheart Jimmie Ward after his wife of 50 years died. Doris and Jimmie had four years of happy married life before Jimmie Ward died in July of 2011.

Doris is survived by three children: Joyce (Jed) Becker of Cresco, Ruth (Fred) Hopkins of Prairie Village, Kan., and Dave (Janela) Hubka of Rochester, Minn.; nine grandchildren: Kyle, Anna, and Mary Ruth Hopkins of Kansas; Leandra Hubka of Tucson, Ariz.; and Irissa, Callum, Makayla, Kindall, and Randall Hubka of Rochester, Minn.; four stepchildren: Michael (Bonni) Ward of Hesper, Larry (Maureen) Ward of St. Louis Park, Minn., Renae (Charlie) Zumwalt of Portland, Ore., and Jimmie M. Ward of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by two husbands: Fred A. Hubka and Jimmie B. Ward; her parents; a brother: Wayne Rice; and sister Mavis (Rice) Hurst.

Maureen Vokaty, 47

ROCHESTER, MN - A celebration of life service for Maureen “Mo” Vokaty of Rochester, Minn. will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011 at Peace United Church of Christ with Pastor Paul Bauch officiating.

Visitation was held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

Maureen, 47, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at her home, surrounded by her loved ones, after a courageous five month battle with cancer.

Maureen Vokaty was born June 15, 1964 in Cresco, the daughter of Cletus and Lorraine (Shimek) Vokaty. She grew up in Schley, Iowa, graduated from Crestwood High School in 1982, and obtained a Human Services degree from Ellsworth Community College. She worked at Fillmore Place in Preston, Minn. before beginning her career at Mayo Clinic. She worked in the Blood Donor Center for 16 years and most recently at St. Mary’s hospital as an Anesthesia Tech.


Maureen enjoyed playing softball, camping, cutting wood, and spending time with her family and many friends.

She is survived by her life partner of 24 years, Jenny Bradt; one brother: Wayne (Darla) Vokaty of Cresco; two sisters: Jillaine (David) Kappes of Cresco and Ruby (Dan) Vandaver of Center Point; two nieces: Jesse (Scott) Njus and Courtney Reicks; three nephews: Reggie, Sam, and Terry Reicks; a great nephew: Chandler Njus; her in-laws: Dorothy Bradt, Roseann (Tim) Bremseth, Linda (Bill) Huntington, Matt (Lisa) Bradt, Keith (Kris) Bradt and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Hartzel Wesseling, 80

LIME SPRINGS - Funeral services for Hartzell Wesseling of Lime Springs will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 at United Methodist Church in Lime Springs with Rev. Candraeah Carey officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and also one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Hartzell, 80, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Hartzell Wesseling was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Springfield, S.D., the son of Henry and Bertha (Judy) Wesseling. He was baptized in Emmanual Reformed Church. He attended rural schools in Bon Homme County, South Dakota, and Forest City Township of Howard County, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. Like his father and grandfather before him, he farmed all of his adult life working the family farm north of Lime Springs near the state line. During retirement, he divided his time between his home in Lime Springs, and an apartment at Arbor Gardens in Eyota, Minn. to be closer to family.


Hartzel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs and the American Legion.

Hartzell is survived by two sisters: Carol (Vern) Baker of Asheville, N.C. and Joanne (Bob) Madsen of Madison Lake, Minn.; 12 nieces and nephews; and 17 great nieces and nephews.

Hartzel was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Marvin, who died on Dec. 4, 1992.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs, The American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Alan Jasper, 62

BIRKENFELD, OR - Alan R. Jasper, 62, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2011 at his home at Fishhawk Lake, Birkenfeld, Ore.

Alan Ray Jasper was born Jan. 5, 1949.

He worked for several years working his way up the purchasing ladder at Storage Technology in Colorado, and then at Intel and Tektronix in Oregon. After getting laid off from Tektronix in the mid 1980s, he started his own business, Turn-a-Round Sales, a manufacturer's rep organization at which he excelled. He loved working with a wide variety of people.

In 1995 he and Nancy purchased their weekend home at Fishhawk Lake and it was their dream to retire there. In 2000 Alan suffered a disabling stroke. The business was closed, home and office were sold and they moved to Fishhawk. The past 11 years were a total joy for Alan. He loved floating around the lake on their pontoon, meeting new folks, watching the salmon spawning and the lake changing throughout the seasons.


Alan is survived by his wife, Nancy Ernst Jasper; a daughter: Allyson (Phil) Broughton; two granddaughters: Skylar and Samantha; one brother: James Jasper of Cleveland, Ohio; and one sister: Jean Oracheff of Glendale, Ariz.

HESPER - Funeral services for Elsie A. Thorson of Hesper will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with Rev. Matt Larson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

Elsie, 86, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Elsie A. Thorson was born Aug. 26, 1925 in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa the daughter of Lester and Pauline (Monthy) Bronner. She graduated from the Canton High School in 1945.


On Jan. 31, 1953 she married Gordon Thorson in Waterloo, Iowa. They farmed Gordon’s home place near Hesper.

She was an active member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and had taught Sunday school and Bible school. She had also been a 4-H leader for several years while her daughters were in 4-H. Elsie loved spending time with her children, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren.

Elsie is survived by four children: LuAnn (Jim) Everett of Columbus

Junction, Iowa, Dean of Decorah, Lori (Don) Van Duyn of Decorah, and Betsy

of Luana, Iowa; two granddaughters: Megan (Ben) Britten of Conroy, Iowa and

Kristen Everett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Kaitlynn


Hendrickson and Lily and Liam Britten; and a sister: Edna Orr.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon on Jan. 18, 2009; a brother: Harold; and a sister: Helen.
