CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Linda Koshatka of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment will be Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6 with a Scripture Service following at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Linda, 59, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at the Winneshiek County Hospital in Decorah after a three year battle with cancer.

Linda Koshatka was born March 29, 1952 in Cresco, the daughter of Louis and Hermina (Ott) Koudelka. She attended Rudolphinum and graduated from South Winn High School in 1970. 


Linda was a dental assistant in Ossian, Iowa, for Dr. Henry DDS from 1970 to 1971.

On October 16, 1971, she married Alvin Koshatka at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Cresco, and successfully started Al's Auto Sales and Al's Tree Moving Service.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, camping and spending time with her family and friends.

Linda is survived by her husband Alvin Koshatka of Cresco; son: Randy (Sandra) Koshatka of Cedar Rapids; daughters: Michelle (Randy Marlow) Foltz of Cresco, Christy (Todd) Teslow of Ridgeway, and Tami Jo (Dusty Moore) Koshatka of Davenport; grandchildren: Lindsay (Drew), Lacy, Dylan, Savannah, Kacey, Riley, Chelsey, Addison, Dawson, Tyler, Jayden, Morgan, Tristan and Aspen; great-grandchildren: Lily, Grace and Baby Zahasky; mother: Hermina Koudelka; brother: Don Koudelka; sister: Lori (Neal) Stapelkamp; and eight nieces and nephews and seven great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father: Louis Koudelka.


Adeline Lubbert, 86

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Adeline Lubbert of Riceville were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Adeline, 86, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.


Loel Reinhart, 84

CRESCO - Graveside services for Loel J. Reinhart of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco with Rev. Michael Carey officiating.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Loel, 84, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at the Patty Elwood Center in rural Cresco.

Loel J. Reinhart was born Sept. 26, 1927 in Cresco, Iowa to Loel Verne and Margaret (Livingston) Reinhart.
Loel is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Olivia; two daughters: Dolores Olivia (Reinhart) Chasteen and Laurie Annette (Reinhart) Rabold; two sons: Loel Leroy Reinhart and William Douglas Reinhart; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother: Charles William Reinhart.


Leone Stockdale, 91

ROCKWELL - Funeral services for Leone Stockdale of Rockwell, formerly of Waterloo were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories in Waterloo.

Visitation was held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 5 at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories. Interment was held at 1:45 p.m. in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Leone, 91, died peacefully Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at Rockwell Community Nursing Center surrounded by her family. She has resided at the center for the past four years.

Leone Stockdale was born June 1, 1920 in Cresco, the daughter of Claude and Bertha (Specht) Essen. She was raised on a farm and attended rural schools graduating from the eighth grade.


Leone married Lester Anderson in 1940 and they later divorced. She worked in Cresco area restaurants for 30 years and was well known for her pastries, pies, and homemade soups.

She was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and belonged to the Ruth Circle. Leone's hobbies included sewing, quilting, rug making, dancing, old time country music and playing cards.

Leone is survived by two sons: Ronald W. (Judy) Anderson of Waterloo and Arnie (Brenda) Stockdale of Dysart; two daughters: Carol J. (Dick) Poppe of Waterloo and Bonnie J. (Denny) Krause of Rockwell; nine grandchildren: Brian Holmes, Kimberly and Ronnie Anderson, Sara Lampson, Jason, Jeremy, and Dion Cody, and Anthony and Brian Stockdale; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law: Arlene Essen of Grundy Center.

She was proceeded in death by a grandson: Bradley Holmes of Santa Fe, New Mexico; a granddaughter: Cyndy Reagan of Waterloo; her parents; two brothers: Darrell Essen of Grundy Center and Kenneth Essen of Cresco; and a sister: Wanda Dewey of Garwin.


Dr. Lee Johnson, 61

REINBECK - A memorial service for Dr. Lee E. Johnson of Reinbeck will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011 at the UCC Church in Reinbeck.

Dr. Lee, 61, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 after a three year battle with Early-Onset Dementia and ALS.

Dr. Lee Elmer Johnson was born Nov. 18, 1950 in Cresco, the son of George and Mary Johnson. He was raised on a farm. Lee became a wrestler at a young age and, by the end of high school, was a two time state champion. His wrestling talents rewarded him with a full scholarship to Iowa State University where he wrestled with his heroes, Dan Gable and Tom Peckham. He studied to become a large and small animal veterinarian. After graduating in 1976, Lee moved to Hudson, Iowa and joined the Hudson Veterinary Clinic. He later expanded the practice to include the Reinbeck Veterinary Clinic.

Lee married Lucinda Fox of Waterloo in 1977 and they had three children. He practiced veterinary medicine for 34 years before retiring in 2009.

Dr. Johnson enjoyed golfing and always looked forward to his annual deer hunting trips. He was known for his happy and outgoing personality and a laugh that could light up a room.

He is survived by his children: Jared, Janee and Brianne

Johnson; grandchildren: Kanzah and Qais Kanoni; and his sisters: Connie Gustafson, JoAnn Johnson and Joyce Rouse).

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother: Judd

Johnson.

Elsie Thorson, 86

HESPER - Funeral services for Elsie A. Thorson of Hesper will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with Rev. Matt Larson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

Elsie, 86, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Elsie A. Thorson was born Aug. 26, 1925 in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa the daughter of Lester and Pauline (Monthy) Bronner. She graduated from the Canton High School in 1945. 


On Jan. 31, 1953 she married Gordon Thorson in Waterloo, Iowa. They farmed Gordon’s home place near Hesper. 

She was an active member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and had taught Sunday school and Bible school. She had also been a 4-H leader for several years while her daughters were in 4-H. Elsie loved spending time with her children, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren.   

Elsie is survived by four children: LuAnn (Jim) Everett of Columbus

Junction, Iowa, Dean of Decorah, Lori (Don) Van Duyn of Decorah, and Betsy

of Luana, Iowa; two granddaughters: Megan (Ben) Britten of Conroy, Iowa and

Kristen Everett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Kaitlynn


Hendrickson and Lily and Liam Britten; and a sister: Edna Orr. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon on Jan. 18, 2009; a brother: Harold; and a sister: Helen.


Hartzel Wesseling, 80

LIME SPRINGS - Funeral services for Hartzell Wesseling of Lime Springs will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 at United Methodist Church in Lime Springs with Rev. Candraeah Carey officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and also one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Hartzell, 80, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Hartzell Wesseling was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Springfield, S.D., the son of Henry and Bertha (Judy) Wesseling. He was baptized in Emmanual Reformed Church. He attended rural schools in Bon Homme County, South Dakota, and Forest City Township of Howard County, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. Like his father and grandfather before him, he farmed all of his adult life working the family farm north of Lime Springs near the state line. During retirement, he divided his time between his home in Lime Springs, and an apartment at Arbor Gardens in Eyota, Minn. to be closer to family.


Hartzel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs and the American Legion.

Hartzell is survived by two sisters: Carol (Vern) Baker of Asheville, N.C. and Joanne (Bob) Madsen of Madison Lake, Minn.; 12 nieces and nephews; and 17 great nieces and nephews.

Hartzel was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Marvin, who died on Dec. 4, 1992.

Alan Jasper, 62

BIRKENFELD, OR - Alan R. Jasper, 62, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2011 at his home at ishhawk Lake, Birkenfeld, Ore.

Alan Ray Jasper was born Jan. 5, 1949.

He worked for several years working his way up the purchasing ladder at Storage Technology in Colorado, and then at Intel and Tektronix in Oregon. After getting laid off from Tektronix in the mid 1980s, he started his own business, Turn-a-Round Sales, a manufacturer's rep organization at which he excelled. He loved working with a wide variety of people.

In 1995 he and Nancy purchased their weekend home at Fishhawk Lake and it was their dream to retire there. In 2000 Alan suffered a disabling stroke. The business was closed, home and office were sold and they moved to Fishhawk. The past 11 years were a total joy for Alan. He loved floating around the lake on their pontoon, meeting new folks, watching the salmon spawning and the lake changing throughout the seasons.


Alan is survived by his wife, Nancy Ernst Jasper; a daughter: Allyson (Phil) Broughton; two granddaughters: Skylar and Samantha; one brother: James Jasper of Cleveland, Ohio; and one sister: Jean Oracheff of Glendale, Arizona.

Florence Eva Bowen, 93

CRESCO - Florence Eva Bowen, 93, of Cresco and formerly of Lime Springs and Waterloo, was born on January 29, 1918 in Fillmore County, Minn. She was the daughter of Emerson and Mary Kingery Broadwater. She married Glenn A. Bowen on May 2, 1948 and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1994.

Florence was a homemaker. She cared for her family by cooking, sewing, gardening and canning. To Florence, family was her life. She was a faithful attendee at various family reunions and instilled in her children the importance of family. Florence also was a long-term member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church.

Florence died on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 while a resident at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Ethel Kiehne and Marvel Underbakke and brothers, Raymond and Elvin Broadwater. She is survived by two sons, Paul (Vicki) Bowen of Lime Springs, Iowa and Mark (Pamela) Bowen of Rolla, Mo.; two daughters, Eloise (Larry) Black of Cedar Rapids and Mary (Dan Brady) Jacobson of Melbourne; 10 grandchildren, Kevin (Kindra) Black of Council Bluffs, Renee Black and Deborah Black of Cedar Rapids, Matthew (Melissa Klug) Bowen of Preston, Minn., Daniel Bowen, Christopher (Beth) Bowen and Holly (Eric) Munkel all of Lime Springs, Lindsey (Rishi) Vajpeyi of Minneapolis, Derek (Megan)

Jacobson of Ankeny and Elizabeth (Brandon Vader) Jacobson of Des Moines and eight great-grandchildren.


Funeral services for Florence will be held on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, 1307 W. Ridgeway Avenue, Waterloo, IA 50701 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. The family will receive guests on

Thursday evening at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, 965 Home Plaza, Waterloo, IA 50701 from 5 to 8 p.m. Online condolences can be left at www.overtonservice.com.

Lucille Wolf, 98

CHESTER - Memorial services for Lucille R. Wolfe of Chester will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 at the United Lutheran Church in Chester.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Inurnment will be held in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Lucille, 98, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.


Lucille Rose Wolfe was born March 29, 1913 in Howard County, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Horjesi) Zobeck. She attended rural country schools in Howard County.

Lucille married Carl Wolfe in April of 1931, at the Bear Creek Lutheran Church in Racine, Minn. She was a homemaker. Lucille was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Chester, for over 60 years, where she was also a member of the Ladies Aide.

Lucille lived in Howard County her entire life. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking, reading and fishing. She especially enjoyed taking walks and watching over her grandchildren. Lucille was a wonderful seamstress making many things including wedding gowns.

She is survived by her children: Roger (Elaine) of Chester, Karen Heggebo of Waterloo, Margie (Chuck) Johnson of Elma; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother: John Zobeck of New Hampton; sister: Dorothy (Reuben) Bartels of Rochester, Minn.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband: Carl; her parents: Louis and Anna; daughter: Jean Rice; son-in-law: Gary Rice; granddaughter: Rhonda Rice, granddaughter: Annie Marie Johnson; great-granddaughter: Imogene Johnson; sister: Kathryn Drtina; and brothers: Charles, Dale, Nelson and Raymond Zobeck.


Madonna Hrdlicka, 83

CRESCO - Funeral services for Madonna "Donna" Hrdlicka of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment will be Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, Conway Chapel in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Donna, 83, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center.

Donna Hrdlicka was born Jan. 18, 1928 on the family farm in Waucoma, the daughter of Julius and Mayme (Schlichte) Bouska. 


On October 7, 1952 she married Leonard Hrdlicka in Waucoma. For over 30 years, Donna worked for the Cresco Care Center as a nurse's aid. She loved holidays especially Christmas. During the Christmas holiday her homemade candies and cookies spoiled her family. Donna was an extremely hard working individual whose faith was very important to her. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, baking and cooking, collecting beanie babies, Bingo, playing cards, and gardening. One of her guilty pleasures was trying her luck at the boat. Donna loved listening and playing music. She had the gift of being able to listen to a song and play it by ear.

Donna is survived by her husband, Leonard of Cresco; her daughter: Jan (Bill) Hennessy of Yorkville, Ill., and their daughter Kate; son-in-law: Brett Hamlett of Cedar Rapids, and his children, Nathan and Nick; sons: Jerry (Julie) of Fort Dodge, and their daughter, Megan; Jeff (Rita) of Cresco, and their children, Frank and Korey; and Jack (Maureen) of Decorah, and their children, Jenna, Jacob, Donnie, and Derek; her siblings: Arlene Vrzak of Lawler, Verne (Alberta) Bouska of Lawler, Vera Rimrodt of Alta Vista, Joe (Rose) Bouska of Charles City, Irma (Bob) Kime of Fayette, and Cletus (Lorna) Bouska of Waucoma; her sister-in-law: Doris Bouska of Hawkeye; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter: Jane Hamlett; her parents; her siblings: Margaret, John, Clifford, and Jim; sisters-in-law: Jeanie, Rosemary, Arlene; and brothers-in-law: Frankie, Don, and Sid.

A Donna Hrdlicka Memorial Fund has been established.


Matthew Malek, 51

CRESCO - Funeral services for Matthew M. Malek of Cresco were held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home of Cresco handled the arrangements.

Matthew, 51, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.


Matthew Mark Malek was born Aug. 10, 1960 in the Howard County Hospital in Cresco, the son of Leland William Malek, Jr. and Carol Mae (Natvig) Malek. He attended Iowa Hospital Schools in Iowa City, Iowa, as a young child and graduated from Sheldon High School in Sheldon, Iowa, in 1980.

Matt worked for Spectrum Industries in Cresco and Decorah and for Aase Haugen Home in Decorah answering phones. He was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan and was also a Kansas City Chiefs fan. He was involved in politics, including the Democratic Central Committee and was a big supporter of the Democratic party. He loved visiting with people and spending time with family and friends.

Matt is survived by his father: Leland (Beatrice Superville) Malek of Cresco; sister: Monica Kulow of The Colony, Texas, sister: Michelle (Tom) Roush of Big Horn, Wyo., and sister: Marti (Gary) Ferrie of Cresco, brother: Chuck (Kathy) Malek of Cresco, sister: Carrie (Al) Lopez of Cresco; aunt: Shirlee (Jerry) Slifka of Cresco, aunt: Jean Forde of Decorah; uncle: Vern (Linda) Natvig of Westminster, Colo., uncle: Mark (Valerie) Natvig of Lawler; nine nieces; six nephews; nine great nieces; four great nephews; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Carol Mae (Natvig) Malek; his paternal grandparents: Leland William Malek, Sr, and Alta B. (Duneman) Malek; and maternal grandparents: Carlyle E. Natvig and Gladys S. (Drewlow) Natvig.
