CRESCO - Bernadine A. Ollendieck, 48, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the Woodward Resource Center in Woodward, Iowa following an extensive battle with a chronic illness. She had been a resident at the Woodward Resource Center for 29 years.

Bernadine Ann Ollendieck was born Jan. 12, 1963 at Howard County Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco, the daughter of Donald and Bernice Ollendieck of Cresco. She loved listening to music (Beach Boys) and participating in a variety of activities.

Bernadine is survived by her mother: Bernice; siblings: Pat (Mar) Ollendieck of Lime Springs, Donna Daniel of Cresco, Julie Ristau of Elma, Craig (Laurie) Ollendieck of Cresco, Kirk (Mel) Ollendieck of Cresco, and Andrew (AJ) Ollendieck of Cresco; and 11 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald.



Dorothy Drilling, 86

WATERLOO - Funeral services for Dorothy M. Drilling of Waterloo will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Notre Dame Church in Cresco. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour before services at Notre Dame Church in Cresco.

Dorothy, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at her home in Waterloo.

Dorothy Marie Drilling was born Sept. 7, 1924 at the family farm home in Cresco, the daughter of Ferd and Leona (Herold) Drilling. Dorothy attended St. Joseph's church and school and graduated from Cresco High School in 1942.


She retired from KWWL TV and the Black Hawk Broadcasting Co. in Waterloo where she spent her entire business career.

Dorothy is survived by two sisters: Loraine O'Hearn of St. Louis, Mo. and Eileen Drilling of Coon Rapids, Minn; two brothers: Vern Drilling of Minnetonka, Minn. and Robert Drilling of Clive; and many nephews and nieces.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers: Gene Drilling and Alvin Drilling.

Edith Miller, 96

ELKADER - A Mass of Christian Burial for Edith C. Miller of Elkader was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader with Very Rev. Paul Peters officiating. Pallbearers were: Greg Johnson, Jonathan Feist, Merlin Kratz, Rayme Murray, James Miehe, John Miehe, Harold Matt, and Kenneth Pittman. Interment was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Elkader.

Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28 at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

Edith, 96, died Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Central Community Hospital in Elkader.

Edith Catherine Miller was born June 7, 1915 in Cresco, the daughter of Michael and Leona (Lewis) Slifka. She graduated from Cresco High School. She then moved to West Union and worked nine years as a receptionist for Dr. King.


On Sept. 11, 1939, she married George Miller at the Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. In 1947 they bought the LEN-HA-HA Dairy in Elkader which they renamed and operated as the Miller Ice Cream Company. They operated a very successful business that became a household name for its one of kind quality ice cream. The business offered home delivery milk, hand packed ice cream, soda fountain and over the years expanded to rural delivery of their dairy products. George and Edith retired and sold their dairy business in 1977.

For many years Edith and her husband, enjoyed their cabin on the Mississippi River and after retirement enjoyed traveling in their motor home. Edith treasured seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, George Miller of Elkader; one daughter: Georgana (Alan) Johnson of Elkader; two grandchildren: Kristine A. (Jonathan) Feist of Cedar Rapids and Gregory A. (Abby) Johnson of North Liberty; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew and Allie Feist and Alana and Avery Johnson.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Leona Slifka; three brothers: Mike, Donald and William Slifka; and four sisters: Helen, Madeline, Margaret, and Grace.

Richard Larsen, 75

ELMA - Funeral services for Richard L. Larsen of Elma will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2011 at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church near Elma with Pastor Dave Byrd officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 7 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Richard, 75, died Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Richard Lee Larsen was born Dec. 22, 1935 the son of Victor and Helen (Groth) Larsen in Elma. He attended Riceville Schools and graduated from Riceville High School in 1954. Richard then farmed in the Elma area. On Nov. 17, 1956, he married Shirley Lucas at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. They farmed in the Elma area.


Richard enjoyed playing cards, camping and wintering in Texas for 10 years. He especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church where he was a very active member and had been President of the church council. He was a Howard County Board Trustee and had received the Howard County Conservation Farmers Award.

Richard is survived by his wife Shirley of Elma; three sons: Jimmy (Cathy) Larsen of Alta Vista, Bryce (Mary Ellen) Larsen of Elma and Kevin (Carmen) Larsen of Elma; one daughter: Julie (Kenneth) Miller of Wyeville, Wis.; four grandchildren: Jennifer (Dave) Hubka, Nicolette (Chad) Hastings, Melissa (Jason) Frye and Jackie Larsen; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother: Charles (Betty) Larsen of Elma; four sisters: Myrna (Francis) Jacoby of Waterloo, Katie (Jim) Rieken of Riceville, Norma (Bud) Pontenberg of Waterloo and Irene (Roger) Heying of New Hampton.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother: Gordan Larsen; and two granddaughters: Ashley and Stacie Larsen.

Clet Koshatka, 89

PROTIVIN - Mass of Christian Burial for Cletus "Clet" W. Koshatka of Protivin was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Servers were Riley and Nicole Meirick and the lector was Jennifer Seman. The gifts were carried by Hannah and Elizbeth Koshatka and the Eucharist Ministers were Donna Dietzenbach, Irene Bruess, and Victor Fencl. Organist was Marlene Pecinovsky and the singers were Harlan Mikota and Miriam Humpal. Pallbearers were David Bouska, Kelly Koshatka, Jennifer Seman, Molly Koshatka, Benjamin Koshatka, Alison Patterson, Bennett Klimesh, Hannah Koshatka and Elizabeth Koshatka. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery at Protivin with Military Rites by American Legion Post # 605 and VFW Post # 4561.

Clet, 89, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Cletus William Koshatka was born in Sumner Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of William and Adella (Jirak) Koshatka. He attended the rural school near his home, and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin with the Class of 1940. Following his education, he helped his father on the farm until he joined the Naval Air Corps in December of 1942. He served during World War II, with most of his duty located in the South Pacific. Clet was discharged in January of 1945 and attended the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines. He worked in a machinery distribution plant for about two years while he lived in Des Moines.

On June 25, 1947, he married Alfreda Mihm at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. They moved to a farm in the Protivin area where he started farming. In 1949, Clet started selling Ferguson tractors, establishing Clet Koshatka Farm Equipment. He was active in running the business for over 50 years, partnering with his son Don beginning in 1992. He was very pleased that this business remained in his family when his son, Don, purchased the business within the last 10 years. Koshatka Farm Equipment still serves the customers Clet appreciated so much with the commitment he started. To Clet, his family was important as well as his business, customers, employees, farm, associates and friends. He was always very considerate of customers' needs and would go out of his way to help them get their machines working and back in the fields. Clet loved working the farm with a tractor and watching the crops grow. He enjoyed learning about history, liked to travel, and loved playing cards with his friends and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He and Alfreda honeymooned in Washington D.C. and since that time Clet made an effort to visit every state capitol, seeing them all except Alaska.

Clet was a 60 year member of the Protivin American Legion, the V.F.W., the Iowa Implement Dealers Association serving as an officer, a former member of the Protivin fire fighters, and a charter member of the South Winn Country Club.

Surviving is his wife, Alfreda; three children: Ken (Mary) Koshatka of Hershey, Pa., Mary Kay (Lyle) Klimesh of Wilmette, Ill. and Don (Connie) Koshatka of Ridgeway; eight grandchildren: Kelly Koshatka, Jennifer (Michael) Seman, Molly Koshatka, Benjamin (Cassie) Koshatka; Dr. Alison (Bryce) Patterson, Bennett Klimesh; Hannah and Elizabeth Koshatka; and three great-grandchildren: Cade Koshatka, Laird Patterson and Grace Koshatka.

He was preceded in death by one daughter: Kathleen Ann; his parents; and one brother: LuVerne Koshatka.

Dr. Alda Knight, 61

KNOXVILLE, IA - Funeral services for Dr. Alda L. Knight, MD FACP of Knoxville, Iowa were held on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the New Covenant Church with Pastor Jim Mead and Dr. Craig A. Bex officiating. Inurnment will be in Graceland Cemetery at a later date.

Alda, 61, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Alda Luane Knight was born July 2, 1949 in Cresco, Iowa the daughter of Alton and Ada (Gay) Knight. She grew up in Riceville, graduating from Riceville High School. Following high school, Alda attended Taylor University in Upland, Ind. where she majored in English and pre-med. She then attended the University of Iowa where she earned her medical degree, specializing in internal medicine. Alda served her residency at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines. She later worked for the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines before moving to Knoxville in 1983.


Alda was married to Tom Horras.

Her patients were a close second to her children; she gave them the utmost in care, compassion and professional guidance. In 1992 she became a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).

She is survived by three children: Auston Horras (Karla Overton) of Des Moines, Alexas Swartz (Ryan) of Iowa City and Ashlynn Horras of Olathe, Kan.; two grandchildren: Aiden and Asher Overton-Horras; her sister: Aleda Gaar (Shan) of Cape Coral, Fla.; and her dear friend: Pat Fall of Knoxville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Martin Hudecek, 75

CRESCO - Funeral services for Martin D. Hudecek of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Lectors were Mitch Hudecek and Kim Soukup, gifts were carried by Mike Hudecek, Landon Soukup, Luke Shulte, Shellie Hudecek, Megan Soukup, Marissah Shulte and Austin Gebel. The organist was Mary Tremmel, the cantor was Bootie Kapler and the singers were Kim Soukup and Don Davis. Pallbearers were: Mike Hudecek, Landon Soukup, Eric Hudecek, Luke Schulte, Jay Hudecek, and Adrian Samec. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Martin, 75, died Thursday, July 7, 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Martin Donald Hudecek was born July 28, 1935 in Lipov, Moravia, a province of Czechoslovakia. At the age of two, Martin immigrated with his parents, John and Mary and older brother John, to America. They settled on a farm near Protivin, Iowa. Martin started school in a typical one room country school about two miles from home. He then went to school in Protivin, where he graduated from Rudolphinum in 1954. Following graduation, he was inducted into the U.S. Army on Aug. 20, 1954 serving with the German Occupation Forces. He was discharged on Aug. 7, 1956. After his return to Iowa, he attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.


On Oct. 7, 1958, he married Gayle M. Klimesh in Spillville. They became the parents of four children. They were later divorced. On Dec. 9, 2000, he married Karen Heintz at their home in Cresco.

After Martin's marriage, he lived and worked in Oelwein. He started working for the Railroad and then worked for Donaldson Co. in Oelwein. He also ran a tavern/restaurant in Oelwein. After his children were born, they moved to Cresco, where with Martin's work ethic, he had many jobs, many at the same time, trying to improve himself. He started working for Vigortone, was the owner operator of the Sport Hut, he managed the Cresco Country Club, was bar tender at the Heritage Supper Club, bought a truck and ran star mail routes, where he would pick up mail at all the post offices and deliver to a main office to be delivered. Martin finally worked his way into the Cresco Post Office where he delivered mail to the people around Cresco. Martin farmed throughout his other work ventures for many years.

He had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, Nascar, pool, golf, watching the History Channel on television, and was a Green Bay Packer fan, and with all the things to do, he never missed any school events of his children.

Martin was proud of his Czech heritage, but was more proud of his family. He had a strong family commitment and raised his family the same way he was raised, with love and hard work.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children: Greg (Theresa) of Protivin, Lori (Tim) McMahon of Charlotte, N.C., Kim Soukup of Cresco, and Mitchell of Rochester, Minn.; two step daughters: Cynthia (Bryan) Schulte of Waukon and Kristi Brainard of Decorah; five grandchildren: Shellie and Michael Hudecek; Meagan and Landon Soukup and Taylor Swift; four step grandchildren: Luke, Marissa and Bryce Schulte; and Cheyenne Bangs; one great-grandson: Austin Gebel; his brothers: John (Mary Ann) of Columbus, Ind. and Jerry (Shirley) of Mason City.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Frank.



Wilma Skretta, 96

CRESCO - Funeral services for Wilma M. Skretta of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. The lector was LeRoy Webb, the gifts were carried by Annette Lorenz, Paul Lorenz and Valerie Madison. The organist was Carol Elwood and the song leader was Bootie Kapler. Pallbearers were: Troy Marty, Lucian Skretta, Chris Marty, Tracy Skretta, Nathan Marty, and Joe Skretta. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Wilma, 96, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center.

Wilma Marie Skretta was born in Sumner Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, on Sept. 30, 1914, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Vopava) Sobolik. She received her education in the rural schools near her home and attended Cresco High School graduating in 1931. Wilma continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College to become a teacher. She taught in many schools in Winneshiek County until she retired.


On July 17, 1934, she married August Skretta. They lived on a farm near Fort Atkinson and Ridgeway and finally moved into Cresco. After moving to Cresco, Wilma and August owned the Maid-Rite Cafe on Highway 9 in Cresco. August died on July 14, 1966. Wilma was a teachers aide at Notre Dame School and became a domestic, cleaning homes for the elderly.

Wilma enjoyed her farm life, where she had a garden, took care of the animals and cooked for her family. Wilma loved to cook and made kolaches and bread. She also crocheted and quilted, making many blankets and afghans for her family. She loved to read and would read many books to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wilma is survived by her daughter: Dolores (friend Charles Marlow) Donlan of Cresco; three sons: Duane of Sheffield, Donald ( Fran) of Charles City and Dale (Joan) of Cresco; 14 grandchildren: Dennis, Darwin, Dana and David; Carmel, Lee, Annette and Valerie; LaVonne, Tracy, Trisha and Holly; Karen and Patrick; 23 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great grandchildren; and one sister: Helen Sobolik.

She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother: Edward Sobolik.

Janet, 86, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Janet June Peters was born Oct. 29, 1924 the daughter of Chris and Florence (Lewis) Blaser in Cresco.


On May 4, 1946, she married Lawrence Peters at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Janet enjoyed gardening, embroidering, word puzzles, spending time with family and friends, and playing cards. She was a fantastic cook and baker, and enjoyed spending time with her dog, Dusty. She was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and an active member of her women's circle.

She is survived by her daughter: Karen (Alvin) Voyna of Cresco; brother: Arnold (Perry) Blaser of Cresco; grandson: Scott (Jeanne) Voyna of Cresco; granddaughter: Kristina (Teri) Voyna of Davenport; great grandchildren: Emily, Brock, and Trenton Voyna all of Cresco.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Lawrence; her parents; four sisters: Vera Bauer, Marjorie Bauer, Mildred Vobr, and Mary Ann Vobr; and one brother: Marvin.

Caroline, 50, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at at her home in Salem, Ore. of smoke inhalation.

Caroline K. Thomas was born March 25, 1961 in Cresco, the daughter of William and Grace Roche. She graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1979 and Business College in Salem. She worked in a law firm most of her life.

Caroline is survived by her husband, Nick; daughter: Lacey; granddaughter: Kaydon; siblings: Elaine Hosek of Fayette, Mary (Mike) Schmauss of Denver, Bill (Fran) Roche of Prairie View, Ill., Kathy (Bob) Dietzenbach of Cresco, Jim Roche of Ft. Collins, Colo., Jo (Don) Fenske of Cresco and Tom (Regina) Roche of Sorrento, Fla.


She is preceded in death by her parents: William and Grace Roche; and nephew: Clint Roche.

Gregory Halverson, 78

GREEN BAY, WI - A memorial service for Gregory "Greg" H. Halverson of Green Bay, Wis. was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church.

Hansen Family Funeral and Cremation Services handled the arrangements.

Greg, 78, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Aurora BayCare Medical Center.

Gregory H. Halverson was born Aug. 12, 1932 in Decorah, the son of Clement and Amy (Harstad) Halverson. After graduation from high school Greg enlisted in the United States Air Force serving his country during the Korean War.


On June 14, 1969, he married Julie McElvain in Milwaukee. Greg started his first job in sales and held various positions before retiring as a District Sales Manager from Moorman's Manufacturing after 17 years. In his retirement Greg worked as a volunteer Red Cross Driver and a floral delivery driver for Flowerama. Greg was also very handy when it came to woodworking and carpentry as well as creating beautiful landscape sceneries. He also loved to pack up the RV and take trips with Julie. Greg was very active in the community and always gave freely of his time to many organizations and his church.

Greg is survived by his wife, Julie; his children: Hal Halverson, Ken Halverson, Patrick Halverson, all of Green Bay; Debbie (Robb) Whitaker, David Halverson and Dennis Halverson, all of California; five grandchildren: Ron Boucher, Xavier and Kaya Elysse Halverson, Laura and Rachel Whitaker; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Diane (Maynard) Hovden and Barbara Gerum; and numerous nieces, nephews and relatives.

He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law: Donnie Gerum.

A Memorial Fund has been established in his name.

CRESCO - A Memorial Mass for Marian "Mary" E. Svoboda of Cresco will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March and Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. The lector will be Brian Larson, the gifts will be carried by Tracey Svoboda, Debbie Oulman and Judy Larson. The organist will be Marlene Pecinovsky and Miriam Humpal will lead the congregation in song. Eucharist Ministers will be Debbie Oulman and Sharon Svoboda. Inurnment will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin.

Mary, 77, died Friday, July 15, 2011 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, MN.

Marian E. Svoboda was born July 19, 1933, on a farm near Conover, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mary (Puffer) Phillips. She attended school at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville.


On April 15, 1952, she was married to Raymond Svoboda by Rev. John Chihak at St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville. They farmed the home farm for 40 years. Their farming operation consisted of dairy cows, hogs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese a few sheep, corn, oats and soybeans. Marian also had two large gardens and canned much of this produce. After the tornado struck in 1968, they sold their dairy herd because the barn and silo were destroyed. In 1992, they moved to Cresco where they built a new home to enjoy their retirement.

Mary enjoyed sewing, crocheting, upholstering furniture, singing, dancing, playing the piano and organ, cooking, baking, gardening, painting, drawing and fishing. She raised a large family and enjoyed having them visit. Many Scrabble games were played. She kept a drawer with a big candy bowl for the grandchildren and they loved it.

Mary is survived by her children: Nancy Newcomb of Edina, Minn., Rachaelle Brady of Orno, Minn., Tracey Svoboda of Edina, Minn., Sheryl (Brad) Harris of Ft. Pamela McAllister, 45

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Pamela M. McAllister of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Pamela, 45, died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at her home after a courageous battle with colon cancer.

Pamela Marie McAllister was born Sept. 14, 1965 in Cresco, the daughter of Wayne and Jayne (Ness) Scholbrock.

On June 2, 1984, she married Michael Thomas McAllister.


Pamela spent many years catering out of the family home prior to establishing The Heritage Events Center where she enjoyed cooking and baking. She was well known for her cheesecakes, scotcharoos, fried chicken and potato salad. She truly loved spending as much time as possible with her grandsons and the rest of her family. Pamela was an amazing woman that always had a genuine smile on her face.

Pamela is survived by her husband: Michael of Cresco, IA; four children: Steven (Alyse) McAllister of Paton, Iowa, Jessica (Israel) Balik of Cresco, Nathan McAllister of Newport News, Va., and Erin McAllister of Cresco; two grandsons: Brock Balik and Sawyer McAllister; her parents: Wayne and Jayne Scholbrock; and two brothers: Rick (Sandra) Scholbrock and Troy (Steph) Scholbrock.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents: Charles and Elsie Ness; and her paternal grandparents: Clem and Dorothy Scholbrock.



Danny Courtney, 52

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Danny Courtney of Cresco was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Danny, 52, died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City from injuries sustained in an accident.

Danny Courtney was born Jan. 11, 1959 in Cresco, the son of Evelyn (Hron) Courtney Andresen and Gerald Courtney. After Gerald's death in 1965, Dan was fortunate enough to have another father in his life when Thomas Andresen married Dan's mother Evelyn. Dan attended St. Joseph's Elementary and Crestwood High School graduating in 1978.

On June 6, 1981, he married Tammy Slifka at Assumption Church in Cresco. To this union four children were born; Cody, Cyle, Cari, and Cheyann. Dan lived all his life in Cresco and was engaged in farming and milking cows with his parents and worked at Cresco Yamaha and Pat Gooder's Body Shop. In 1987, Dan began his career at Donaldson Company in Cresco. Dan, along with his wife Tammy, owned and operated Courtney's Lawn Service, Cresco Fire Safety Equipment and The M & M Lounge.


Dan loved his family and they always came first. He enjoyed hunting, motorcycling, snowmobiling, boating, and spending time with family and friends. Dan was known for living life to the fullest. With a twinkle in his eye, and his fun caring personality, he had the ability to make every person that he met feel special.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy; four children: Cody (Danielle), Cyle (Adrianne), Cari (Evan) Carman, all of Cresco, and Cheyann at home; a daughter: Danielle Christopher of Bluffton; four grandchildren: Carter, Chloe, Brinley and Kaden Courtney; his parents: Evelyn and Thomas Andresen of Cresco; one brother: Timothy Courtney of Cresco; one sister: Judy (Eric) Thorson of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

Dan was preceded in death by his father: Gerald Courtney; his grandparents: Harry and Stella Courtney, Vincent and Rose Hron, and William and Christine Andresen.




John Church, 86

CRESCO - Funeral services for John H. Church of Cresco were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

John, 86, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

John Henry Church was born Feb. 11, 1925 the son of G. Henry and Enid (Gooder) Church in rural McIntire, Iowa. He attended rural school and graduated in 1942. John later joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier in the Atlantic and Mediteranean. Later he was stationed at the Naval Headquarters in San Diego, Calif., as a photographer and Navy news reporter.


In 1947 he married Lola Maye Witzel at Riceville. John worked in the creamery at Little Cedar and Nora Springs. In 1949 they started farming north of Riceville, then at Davis Corners, finally in Winneshiek County, retiring in 1999.

John was a longtime member of the Cresco United Methodist Church, Howard County Farm Bureau, Dairy Shrine, and the Cresco Saddle Club. He will be remembered for his passion for his Guernsey and Angus cattle, his sheep, and his love for good dogs.

He is survived by a daughter: Sandra (Fran) Donny; a son: Craig (Gladie); nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and a sister-in-law: Lois Church.

John was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a brother: William.

Lynsey, 48, died Friday, July 15, 2011 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Lynsey Lorell Gronwoldt was born Jan. 7, 1963 in Des Moines, the son of Leonard and Marlene (Souhrada) Gronwoldt. His parents were killed in a car accident in 1964 and Marvin and Marlys (Souhrada) Gronwoldt became his legal guardians.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Grace E. Lewis of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Grace, 77, died Sunday, July, 17 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Grace Evelyn Lewis was born Jan. 1, 1934 in Vernon Springs, Iowa, the daughter of John and Eva (Linderman) Lucas. She was the youngest of 13 children.

On June 28, 1958, she married Clarence "Bill" Lewis. Grace's grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she spent many hours caring for them. She loved reading, puzzles, cross-stitch, baking, and crocheting.


She is survived by four children: Dolly Meiners of Spring Grove, Minn., Brenda (David) Rask of Caledonia, Minn., Shawn (Wendy) Lewis of Saratoga, and Susie (Alan) Lewis of Cresco; 13 grandchildren: Nick Rask, Brianne Meiners, Joe Rask, Chris Lewis, Alan Lewis, Brandon Rask, Alex Meiners, Shyanne Lewis, Adam Hasleiet, Carissa Rask, Nicole Hasleiet, Erin Hasleiet, and Cameron Rowe Hasleiet; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill; a daughter: Mary Anne; and several brothers and sisters.


Mary Flanagan, 93

SODA SPRINGS, IDAHO - A memorial service for Mary E. "Liz" Flanagan of Soda Springs, Idaho was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2011 at the Soda Springs Presbyterian Church.

Liz, 93, died Sunday, July 17, 2011 at the Caribou Nursing Home.

Mary Elizabeth Flanagan was born March 31, 1918 in Vernon Spring, Iowa, the second of seven children to John T. and Anna (Brown) Kakac. Liz graduated from Cresco High School in 1935 and became a legal secretary.

On Aug. 23, 1938, she married George "Chris" Flanagan.


Liz is survived by one son: Jim (Mary C) of Rawlins, Wyo.; one daughter: Sue (Larry) Roberts of Soda Springs, Idaho; eight grandchildren: Jason Flanagan of LaCrosse, Wis., Jared Flanagan of Henderson, Nev., John Dunt of Nampa, Idaho, Sara Flanagan (Jason) Smith of Tomball, Texas, Jamin (Jessica) Flanagan of Rawlins, Wyo., Beth Dunt (Kirk) Thorson of Anamosa, Iowa, Andy Dunt of Richmond , Va., Gwen Roberts (Eric) Andrews of LaMoore, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris in March 1989; one great-grandson: Levi Thorson; a sister: Doris (Bob) Howard; and five brothers: Kenneth (Gladys) Kakac, John T (Virginia) Kakac, Richard (Juanita) Kakac, David Kakac, and Jerald (Kay) Kakac.

Joyce Schissel, 82

EAST GULL LAKE, MN - Mass of Christian Burial for Joyce M. Schissel of East Gull Lake, Minn. was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Rev. Dennis H. Cahill officiating. The lector was Lisa Saddler and the gifts were carried by Elli, Emma and Evan Saddler. The organist was Marilyn Novak and the song leader was Pam Daley. Pallbearers were: Brian Novak, Dan Saddler, Kirk Novak, Harold Huhe, Steve Novak and Quentin Vsetecka. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

A memorial service was held at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd, Minn. on Saturday, July 16.

Joyce, 82, died Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Joyce Marie Schissel was born August 6, 1928 in Sumner Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, near Protivin, the daughter of John and Della (Vsetecka) Novak. She attended the rural school near her home and graduated from Cresco High School in 1945. Joyce furthered her education to become a certified lab technician. She worked as a medical lab tech at the hospitals in Cresco, West Union and Elkader.


On Sept. 3, 1958, she married Dale Schissel at St. Joseph's Church in Cresco. They farmed east of Cresco and owned and operated the Kozy Korners in Ridgeway about 10 years. They bought and operated the Tower Club at Cresco for five or six years and moving to Minnesota, they bought the Big Chief Resort on Gull Lake and operated it for about five years. They continued catering after their retirement.

Dale died in 1998 and Joyce remained living in East Gull Lake, visiting Cresco often and wintering in Florida. She enjoyed her catering and having fun with her family and friends. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary.

Joyce is survived by her children: Dr. Dawn (Ronald) Lauridsen of West Des Moines, Dr. Dionne (Joe) Dynlacht of Indianapolis, Ind., Dana (Tracie) Schissel of Brainerd, Minn., Melanie (John) Perry of Ft. Myers, Fla. and John (Jennifer) of Little Rock, Ark.; eight grandchildren: Elyse and Wesley Dynlacht; Erik Schissel; Jake, Beck and Dax Schissel; Laura and Angie Lauridsen; and John Perry; and one great-grandchild: Morgan Hines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her parents; and a brother: Allan Novak.


Stanley Bergan, 60

LeROY, MN - Funeral services for Stanley C. Bergan of LeRoy, Minn. were held on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the LeRoy Lutheran Church with the Reverend Rolf Wangberg officiating. Interment was in the LeRoy Lutheran Church Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 161 and by the Army Burial Honors.

Hindt Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Stanley, 60, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. of complications following a liver transplant.

Stanley Curt Bergan was born March 16, 1951 in Austin, Minn., the son of Curtis and Dorothy (Enfield) Bergan. He was baptized and confirmed in the LeRoy Lutheran Church and graduated from the LeRoy-Ostrander High School in 1969 where he was active in 4H, FFA and sports. He attended Mankato State University and later completed his undergraduate degree at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa.


On Jan. 12, 1975, he married Sharon Knode at the LeRoy Lutheran Church. He joined the Army National Guard in November 1975 beginning his career as battalion motor officer for the 47th S&T Battalion. Stan loved his two years of service as company commander. In 1991, Major Bergan served as operations officer for the Emergency Operations Center within the Pentagon during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Later in his career, Stan served in Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom with much time spent overseas. Stan retired as a Full Bird Colonel from Rock Island Arsenal in 2008 returning to LeRoy to farm as he did throughout his military career.

Stan's loves were his family, farm and country. He was a member of the Soil and Conservation Board, the LeRoy Rural Fire Association, and served as a township officer on the LeRoy Township Board. He was a member of the LeRoy Lutheran Church where he served on the council and cemetery board, the American Legion Post 161 in LeRoy, the VFW Post 4114 in Spring Valley, and also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; son: Brad, both of LeRoy; daughter: Rebecca (Dallas) Linkenmeyer of Riceville; grandchildren: Cheyenne Bergan and Kennedy and Mally Linkenmeyer; his mother: Dorothy Bergan of LeRoy; and siblings: Doug (Linda) Bergan of Lanesboro, Minn. and Diane Lukavsky of Chariton, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis.



Jimmie Ward, 83

CRESCO - Funeral services for Jimmie "Jim" B. Ward of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Jim, 83, died Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Jimmie Brooks Ward was born March 6, 1928 in Burr Oak, Iowa, the second of four sons born to Walter Sr. and Margaret (Rice) Ward. As a child he experienced the difficult times and hard work that was commonplace with farm life in the 1930s. It was during those years that he learned the values of hard work, strength of character and self-discipline.


A short time after meeting, Jim and "Valli" Galilejeus were married on May 16, 1950 and settled in Cresco. Jim worked for the Farmer's Co-Op creamery and enjoyed his years of experience and the many friendships he developed while first providing delivery service to the community through eventual management of the Wisconsin Dairies plant.

After Jim's first wife Valli's death, he was reunited with a childhood friend Doris Hubka and the two were eventually married. The children from both families quickly formed one large extended family.

Jim was well known and liked for his devotion to work and family. He could fix anything and was always a man of his word.

Jim is survived by his wife, Doris of Cresco; three sons: Michael (Bonni) of Hesper, Larry (Maureen) of St. Louis Park, Minn., Jimmie M. of Cresco, and one daughter: Renae (Charlie) of Portland, Ore.; three stepchildren: Joyce (Jed) Becker of Cresco, Ruth (Fred) Hopkins of Kansas City, Kan., and Dave (Janela) Hubka of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three brothers: Robert (Marlene) of Mabel, Minn., Walter Jr. "Sonny" (Carol) of Harmony, Minn., and Earl (Carl) of St. Paul, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Valli; his parents; a niece: Lori Ann: and a nephew: Durwin Ward.
