CRESCO - Tony Maly, 35, of Cresco died Friday, May 27, 2011 after losing a battle with numerous illnesses.

Friends greeted the family from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, June 3 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Tony Maly was born in Minneapolis, Minn. on May 7, 1976. He moved to Austin, Minn. and graduated from Austin High School.

He was married and had four children, Cheyenne, Trystann, Dakota, and Aaliyah. He later was divorced. He came to Cresco with a friend in July 2006. He met his current wife, Jesie, and they married on June 9, 2007. She had four children from previous relationships, Sierra, Tanner, Jamie, and Dominic. Tony went on to adopt Jamie and Dominic as his own.


Tony loved riding motorcycles, barbecuing, and cooking in general. He worked piercing at Unusual Expressions, and was a welder at Featherlite.

He is survived by his wife, Jesie (Kuhse) Maly of Cresco; four daughters: Cheyenne, Trystann, Aaliyah of Austin, Minn. and Sierra of Cresco; four sons: Dakota of Austin, Minn., Tanner, Jamie and Dominic of Cresco; his parents: Dan and Barb Maly of Austin, Minn.; his grandmother: Rose Stundahl of Austin, Minn.; a brother: D.J.; a sister: Camile; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two grandfathers.


Frances Thomson, 77

CRESCO - Funeral services for Frances "Fran" J. Thomson of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Fran, 77, died Monday, May 23, 2011 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Frances Joan Baker was born June 24, 1933 the daughter of Lila Larson and Luther Baker in Decorah. Her grandmother Clara Larson lived with them for many years and she was very close to her. Fran attended Decorah schools where she was a cheerleader and excelled in vocal music. Her sextet received first in state competition. She was a member of the high school honor society.


After graduating, she worked at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis as a life guard while attending Iowa Teachers College (now Northern Iowa University). She was a beauty queen and graduated with a degree in elementary education with a minor in remedial reading.

Fran taught kindergarten in Anamosa, Iowa and later in Cresco's south side school and remedial reading which included some students who went on to distinguished careers.

In 1958 she married John (Jack) Thomson to which union a son J. Scott Thomson was born in 1960.

Fran joked that she was the biblical Ruth in joining her husband's Congregational Church where she taught confirmation, directed the choir, and sang solos as an alto and a contralto.

She was an ardent PEO, passing through the offices, and as president performing for the state annual meeting in Des Moines. Fran participated in the Cresco Centennial in a dance routine.

Fran was a quality force in the growth of the Cresco Union Savings Bank, setting the decorating standards and heading up the entertaining venues.


She is survived by her husband Jack; a son: Scott (Stephanie); and three grandchildren: Samantha, John and William.

Lawrence Peters, 88

CRESCO - Funeral services for Lawrence E. Peters of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Lawrence, 88, died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Regional Health Services Hospital of Howard County.

Lawrence Ernest Peters was born Feb. 18, 1923, the son of Ernest and Mary (Vit) Peters in Howard County, Iowa.
On May 4, 1946 he married Janet Blaser at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Lawrence worked for many years at the Rural Electric Cooperative as a service technician.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, served on the church council and the Cresco city council, and was a board member of L & L Apartments. He maintained the clock in the tower of Immanuel for many years. He may be most remembered for his work selling and servicing Zenith televisions in the area.

He enjoyed fishing, HAM Radio, woodworking, spending time with family and friends, and playing cards. Lawrence also enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels, and he adored the company of his dog, Dusty.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter: Karen (Alvin) Voyna of Cresco; grandson: Scott (Jeanne) Voyna of Cresco; granddaughter: Kristina (Teri) Voyna of Davenport; great-grandchildren: Emily, Brock, and Trenton Voyna all of Cresco; and a sister: Viola Roman of Cresco;.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents.


Mary Biel, 96

GRANGER, MN - A memorial service for Mary N. Biel of Granger, Minn. was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Harmony, Minn. with Rev. Maureen Hagen officiating. Inurnment was held in the Saetersdal Cemetery.

Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston, Minn. handled the arrangements.

Mary, 96, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Harmony Community Healthcare in Harmony, Minn.

Mary Nora Biel was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Rose Creek, Minn., the daughter of Edwin and Julia Pickett and grew up in Carimona, Minn. She was the youngest of eight siblings. She graduated from Preston High School.


On March 5, 1934, she married Harvey Louis Biel from the Cresco area. They farmed near Wykoff, Minn., for 10 years and later in Bristol Township, Fillmore County until retiring to Granger in 1986. They were active in Saetersdal Lutheran Church. She loved animals, flowers, gardening, poetry and reading, and taught herself to play the piano.

Mary worked for 17 years at the Harmony Nursing Home.

She is survived by three sons: Stanley (Lavonne) of Durand, Wis., Clifford (Donna) of Mondovi, Wis., and Louis (Rosie) of Dewitt; two daughters: Marian Beiwel of Harmony, Minn. and Julia (Dick) Titus of Lamoni; 25 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death her husband; one daughter: Cynthia; a granddaughter; her parents; three brothers; and four sisters.


Arnold Osenga, 90

CRESCO - Funeral services for Arnold "Ozzie" L. Osenga of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

Arnold, 90, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, Ill.

Arnold Leon Osenga was born Jan. 16, 1921 in Lime Springs, the son of Simon and Stena Josephine (Osland) Osenga. He graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1938. He farmed with his father until he entered the United States Army on Aug. 8, 1942. Ozzie served with the 1474th Engineer Maintenance Company as a parts clerk in France, Germany, and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 7, 1946. Upon leaving the Army, he was employed by Cresco Machine, and worked there until his retirement.

On Oct. 27, 1946 he married Helen R. Smith. To this union two children were born, Verla and Ruth. Helen passed away in October of 1963. He later married Ethel Hopperstad on Jan. 3, 1969. She passed away in October of 1980. Ozzie then married Olga (Risdahl) Sanderson on May 20, 1983. Olga passed away in October of 1996.


Ozzie was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, the United Methodist Church, and the Midwest Tool Collectors, and I.O.O.F. He enjoyed collecting tools, attending auctions, woodworking, spending time with family, and traveling around to local shops to visit with friends. He was also well known for the peanut brittle he made at Christmas time.

He is survived by two daughters: Verla Adams of Jacksonville, Ill. and Ruth (Robert) Neptune of San Diego, Calf.; four step children: David (Diane) Hopperstad of Waterloo, Jerry (Sarah) Risdahl of Morristown, Tenn., Diane (Dave) Hassig of Plainview, Minn., and Marion (Scott) of Tyler, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three wives; a granddaughter: Jamie Murphy; his parents; a sister: Norma Zak; and a brother: Lyle Wayne.



George Schumacher, 80

STORY CITY - Funeral services for George E. Schumacher of Story City were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.

Visitation was from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday morning at the funeral home prior to the service.

George, 80, died Monday, May 30, 2011 at Bethany Manor in Story City.

George Edward Schumacher was born July 9, 1930 in Dubuque, the oldest of four children born to George Emil and Helen Blanche (Rhodes) Schumacher. He grew up in Dubuque where he graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1948. He attended Iowa State University for two years and returned to Dubuque to work.


On June 14, 1953 he married Irma Lillian Hueneke at St. John's Lutheran Church at St. Donatus, Iowa.

In 1954 they moved to Waukon where he operated a dairy and swine farm owned by his father. When his father decided to sell the farm in 1957, they moved to Cresco. George and Irma had an opportunity to purchase a farm near Cresco in 1962 where they lived until the fall of 2010. It was George's goal to raise registered Angus cattle and he was proud to have sold breeding and commercial cattle into seven states. He was an active member of the Northeast Iowa Angus Association and managed their annual sale in Elkader and served on the board of directors. In 1983 he was honored for his 26 years of service to that association. During the years they lived on the farm, George also worked as a contract crop adjuster and as a technician for the Soil Conservation Services.

In 1971 they purchased the Farm Discount Store in Cresco where they sold feed, seed, and animal health supplies for 20 years. After he sold the store, he went to work for Rain & Hail Insurance Service, Inc. out of Des Moines, where he worked for over 25 years as a crop adjuster. In 1996, Rain & Hail recognized him as "Adjuster of the Year" for the state of Iowa.

George was a life-time member of the Masonic Lodge and was recognized as a 50 year member in 2001. He also served on the Howard County Fair Board where he was the Beef Cattle Superintendent for 20 years.

His life's passion was hunting and fishing. He spent his spare time fly tying, jig making, and building custom fishing rods. George made many trips to Ft. Smith, Montana for his annual fly fishing trip and caught lots of trout in the Little Big Horn River. He liked fishing and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren, nieces and nephews how to be fly fishermen. He also made several trips to Wyoming for antelope and deer hunting. He was an avid pheasant and deer hunter, and raised and trained Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Brittany Spaniels for hunting purposes.

George is survived by his wife, Irma; four children, daughter: Becky and husband Arlen Sawyer of Bassett, Neb., son: Mark and wife Susan of Wolsey, S.D., daughter: Mitzi Schumacher of Lexington, Ky., and daughter Jo Schumacher and friend Chad Cook of Ames; five grandchildren: Jessica and Adam Sawyer, Nathan and Kelli Jo Schumacher, and Jake Arrowsmith; one sister: Jean and husband Jim Bell of Hartford, Wis.; one brother: Bob Schumacher and wife Linda of Medina, Ohio; sister-in-law: Marilyn Schumacher of Beloit, Wis.; brother-in-law: Aaron and wife Jean Hueneke of Bellvue; sister-in-law: Mildred and husband Cletus Davis of Dubuque; and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother: Bill Schumacher.


Joe Pecinovsky, 85

CRESCO - Joe A. Pecinovsky, 85, of Cresco passed away at his home on June 3, 2011 after a long battle with lymphoma. He wished to be cremated and his family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Joe A. Pecinovsky was born Aug. 16, 1925, the son of Joe P. and Anna Pecinovsky.

Jessie Milz, 97

CRESCO - Funeral services for Jessie M. Milz of Cresco will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, with a parish vigil service following. Visitation will also be held an hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Jessie, 97, died Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Jessie M. Milz was born Jan. 23, 1914 in Downey, Cedar County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Faye (Williams) Cornwall. She received her education from West Branch High School and received her Degree in Nursing from St. Luke's Methodist Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

On May 31, 1940, she married Joseph R. Milz at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. Jessie started working in Mercy Hospital in Cresco and later in Regional Health Services Hospital, until her retirement in May of 1979.


She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Hospital Auxiliary, the Historical Society and the Cresco Women's Club.

After Jessie retired, she volunteered most of her time at her church, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Cresco Care Center. Jessie also loved to play cards and read to her grandchildren.

Jessie is survived by a daughter-in-law: Diane Milz of Dyersville; four sons: Donald (Sharon) Milz of Kansas City, Mo., Richard (Anita) Milz of Greenwood, Mo., Gerald (Colleen) of Norwood Young America, Minn., and Joseph (Terri) Milz Jr; three daughters: Marilyn (John) O'Shea of Cedar Rapids, Judy Crisman of Martinez, Ga., and Jeanne (Dennis) Hruska of New Hampton; 25 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one brother: George (Avis) Cornwall of Iowa City; three sisters-in-law: Luella Guillaum of Loyal, Wis., Catherine Veach of Dubuque, and Matilda Milz of Cresco; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Milz; one son: Wayne F. Milz; one granddaughter: Jennifer Crisman; one son-in-law; Thomas Crisman; her parents; three sisters; and two brothers.



Myrtle Novak, 92

CEDAR RAPIDS - Funeral services for Myrtle B. Novak of Cedar Rapids will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fairfax with Rev. Dustin Vu officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco at 2:00 p.m. Friends may visit at the church on Thursday after 9 a.m.

Myrtle, 92, died Saturday, June 25, 2011 at West Ridge Care Center following a long illness.

Myrtle Bertha Novak was born March 14, 1919 in Granger, Minn.


On Nov. 20, 1939, she married Virgil George Novak in Cresco. Myrtle enjoyed gardening, fishing and sewing.

Myrtle is survived by a son: Charles (Rachael) Novak of Marietta, Ga.; daughter: Linda Rybak (Don) of Cedar Rapids; and three grandchildren: Matthew and Thomas Novak and Laura Rybak.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband Virgil in 2002; her parents; and five brothers and sisters.



Curt Lammers, 63

CRESCO - Curt H. Lammers, 63, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at his home in Cresco. It was Curt's wish to be cremated and no formal services held.

Visitation was held on Friday, June 24 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco.

Curt Harvey Lammers was born Feb. 24, 1948 in Moline, Ill., the son of Harvey and Barbara (Krakliow) Lammers. As a small boy Curt moved to the Lime Springs, Chester area with his family. Curt attended Lime Springs Elementary School and graduated Cresco to High School in 1966. Curt then attended Mankato State to further his education. He entered the US Army on March 19, 1968 serving with Company C 2nd Bn 41st Infantry. Curt served two months in Viet Nam earning numerous medals, badges and the Purple Heart. Curt was transferred to the Reserves in Ft. Hood, Texas on August 18, 1969 to the expiration of his term of service.

On Sept. 5, 1970, he married Barbara Boots at the Methodist Church in Chester. Curt had worked for the Chester Telephone Company and then started working for GTE in Cresco and worked there until it became Iowa Telecom and he retired after working over 30 years.


Curt was an avid fast pitch softball player and played for the Chester Team, he enjoyed bowling and rolled a 298, which he was very proud of. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Nascar fan. He belonged to the Cresco Country Club and had served on its Board of Directors, was a member of the American Legion, the Cresco Wildlife Club and was a union steward of many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and would make the spring trip north to catch the big one. Curt and Barb wintered in Texas following his retirement, and both liked to travel.

Curt is survived by his wife Barb; two children: Tom of Forrest City, Ark. and Laura (Steve) Ellingson of Clive, Iowa; two grandchildren: Elijah and Israel Ellingson; his mother: Barbara Lammers of St. Michael, Minn.; one sister: Susan Cartney of Otsego, Minn.; and one brother: Larry (special friend Pam) Lammers of Chester.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey.



Beatrice Havlik, 99

ELMA - Mass of Christian Burial for Beatrice "Bea" A. Havlik of Elma was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes with Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Lourdes.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22 with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday.

Beatrice, 99, died Sunday, June 19, 2011 at her home in rural Elma of natural causes.

Beatrice A. Havlik was born Jan. 3, 1912 along with her twin sister Beata, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Navratil) Praska. Bea attended rural and parochial schools.


On Oct. 20, 1931, she married Adolph Havlik, Sr. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Bea was a housewife, mother and farm helper. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Bea loved gardening, cooking and crocheting until poor sight took that luxury from her.

Bea is survived by her daughter: Bea Marr of Riceville; sons: Adolph, Jr. of Ionia and Clem (Jan) of Cedar Falls; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one step-great-great-great-grandchild along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph, Sr. on Jan. 3, 1987; her son: Dr. Frank on June 4, 1967; daughter-in-law: Joan Havlik on June 2, 2007; son-in-law: Robert Marr on July 29, 2010; her siblings: Joseph Praska, Emma Clynch and, twin sister, Beata Kubik; and one great-grandchild, Destiny Havlik.
