- Tony Maly, 35, of Cresco died Friday, May 27, 2011
after losing a battle with numerous illnesses.
Friends greeted the family from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, June 3 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Tony Maly was born in Minneapolis, Minn. on May 7, 1976. He moved to Austin, Minn. and graduated from Austin High School. He was married and had four children, Cheyenne, Trystann, Dakota, and Aaliyah. He later was divorced. He came to Cresco with a friend in July 2006. He met his current wife, Jesie, and they married on June 9, 2007. She had four children from previous relationships, Sierra, Tanner, Jamie, and Dominic. Tony went on to adopt Jamie and Dominic as his own. Tony loved riding motorcycles, barbecuing, and cooking in general. He worked piercing at Unusual Expressions, and was a welder at Featherlite. He is survived by his wife, Jesie (Kuhse) Maly of Cresco; four daughters: Cheyenne, Trystann, Aaliyah of Austin, Minn. and Sierra of Cresco; four sons: Dakota of Austin, Minn., Tanner, Jamie and Dominic of Cresco; his parents: Dan and Barb Maly of Austin, Minn.; his grandmother: Rose Stundahl of Austin, Minn.; a brother: D.J.; a sister: Camile; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. United Methodist Church in Cresco.
Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in
Cresco.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements. Fran, 77, died Monday, May 23, 2011 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. Frances Joan Baker was born June 24, 1933 the daughter of Lila Larson and Luther Baker in Decorah. Her grandmother Clara Larson lived with them for many years and she was very close to her. Fran attended Decorah schools where she was a cheerleader and excelled in vocal music. Her sextet received first in state competition. She was a member of the high school honor society. After graduating, she worked at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis as a life guard while attending Iowa Teachers College (now Northern Iowa University). She was a beauty queen and graduated with a degree in elementary education with a minor in remedial reading. Fran taught kindergarten in Anamosa, Iowa and later in Cresco's south side school and remedial reading which included some students who went on to distinguished careers. In 1958 she married John (Jack) Thomson to which union a son J. Scott Thomson was born in 1960. Fran joked that she was the biblical Ruth in joining her husband's Congregational Church where she taught confirmation, directed the choir, and sang solos as an alto and a contralto. She was an ardent PEO, passing through the offices, and as president performing for the state annual meeting in Des Moines. Fran participated in the Cresco Centennial in a dance routine. Fran was a quality force in the growth of the Cresco Union Savings Bank, setting the decorating standards and heading up the entertaining venues. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements. Lawrence, 88, died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Regional Health Services Hospital of Howard County. Lawrence Ernest Peters was born Feb. 18, 1923, the son of Ernest and Mary (Vit) Peters in Howard County, Iowa. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, served on the church council and the Cresco city council, and was a board member of L & L Apartments. He maintained the clock in the tower of Immanuel for many years. He may be most remembered for his work selling and servicing Zenith televisions in the area. He enjoyed fishing, HAM Radio, woodworking, spending time with family and friends, and playing cards. Lawrence also enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels, and he adored the company of his dog, Dusty. He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter: Karen (Alvin) Voyna of Cresco; grandson: Scott (Jeanne) Voyna of Cresco; granddaughter: Kristina (Teri) Voyna of Davenport; great-grandchildren: Emily, Brock, and Trenton Voyna all of Cresco; and a sister: Viola Roman of Cresco;. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston, Minn. handled the arrangements. Mary, 96, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Harmony Community Healthcare in Harmony, Minn. Mary Nora Biel was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Rose Creek, Minn., the daughter of Edwin and Julia Pickett and grew up in Carimona, Minn. She was the youngest of eight siblings. She graduated from Preston High School. On March 5, 1934, she married Harvey Louis Biel from the Cresco area. They farmed near Wykoff, Minn., for 10 years and later in Bristol Township, Fillmore County until retiring to Granger in 1986. They were active in Saetersdal Lutheran Church. She loved animals, flowers, gardening, poetry and reading, and taught herself to play the piano. Mary worked for 17 years at the Harmony Nursing Home. She is survived by three sons: Stanley (Lavonne) of Durand, Wis., Clifford (Donna) of Mondovi, Wis., and Louis (Rosie) of Dewitt; two daughters: Marian Beiwel of Harmony, Minn. and Julia (Dick) Titus of Lamoni; 25 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Arnold, 90, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, Ill. Arnold Leon Osenga was born Jan. 16, 1921 in Lime Springs, the son of Simon and Stena Josephine (Osland) Osenga. He graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1938. He farmed with his father until he entered the United States Army on Aug. 8, 1942. Ozzie served with the 1474th Engineer Maintenance Company as a parts clerk in France, Germany, and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 7, 1946. Upon leaving the Army, he was employed by Cresco Machine, and worked there until his retirement. On Oct. 27, 1946 he married Helen R. Smith. To this union two children were born, Verla and Ruth. Helen passed away in October of 1963. He later married Ethel Hopperstad on Jan. 3, 1969. She passed away in October of 1980. Ozzie then married Olga (Risdahl) Sanderson on May 20, 1983. Olga passed away in October of 1996. Ozzie was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, the United Methodist Church, and the Midwest Tool Collectors, and I.O.O.F. He enjoyed collecting tools, attending auctions, woodworking, spending time with family, and traveling around to local shops to visit with friends. He was also well known for the peanut brittle he made at Christmas time. He is survived by two daughters: Verla Adams of Jacksonville, Ill. and Ruth (Robert) Neptune of San Diego, Calf.; four step children: David (Diane) Hopperstad of Waterloo, Jerry (Sarah) Risdahl of Morristown, Tenn., Diane (Dave) Hassig of Plainview, Minn., and Marion (Scott) of Tyler, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation was from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday morning at the funeral home prior to the service. George, 80, died Monday, May 30, 2011 at Bethany Manor in Story City. George Edward Schumacher was born July 9, 1930 in Dubuque, the oldest of four children born to George Emil and Helen Blanche (Rhodes) Schumacher. He grew up in Dubuque where he graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1948. He attended Iowa State University for two years and returned to Dubuque to work. On June 14, 1953 he married Irma Lillian Hueneke at St. John's Lutheran Church at St. Donatus, Iowa. In 1954 they moved to Waukon where he operated a dairy and swine farm owned by his father. When his father decided to sell the farm in 1957, they moved to Cresco. George and Irma had an opportunity to purchase a farm near Cresco in 1962 where they lived until the fall of 2010. It was George's goal to raise registered Angus cattle and he was proud to have sold breeding and commercial cattle into seven states. He was an active member of the Northeast Iowa Angus Association and managed their annual sale in Elkader and served on the board of directors. In 1983 he was honored for his 26 years of service to that association. During the years they lived on the farm, George also worked as a contract crop adjuster and as a technician for the Soil Conservation Services. In 1971 they purchased the Farm Discount Store in Cresco where they sold feed, seed, and animal health supplies for 20 years. After he sold the store, he went to work for Rain & Hail Insurance Service, Inc. out of Des Moines, where he worked for over 25 years as a crop adjuster. In 1996, Rain & Hail recognized him as "Adjuster of the Year" for the state of Iowa. George was a life-time member of the Masonic Lodge and was recognized as a 50 year member in 2001. He also served on the Howard County Fair Board where he was the Beef Cattle Superintendent for 20 years. His life's passion was hunting and fishing. He spent his spare time fly tying, jig making, and building custom fishing rods. George made many trips to Ft. Smith, Montana for his annual fly fishing trip and caught lots of trout in the Little Big Horn River. He liked fishing and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren, nieces and nephews how to be fly fishermen. He also made several trips to Wyoming for antelope and deer hunting. He was an avid pheasant and deer hunter, and raised and trained Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Brittany Spaniels for hunting purposes. George is survived by his wife, Irma; four children, daughter: Becky and husband Arlen Sawyer of Bassett, Neb., son: Mark and wife Susan of Wolsey, S.D., daughter: Mitzi Schumacher of Lexington, Ky., and daughter Jo Schumacher and friend Chad Cook of Ames; five grandchildren: Jessica and Adam Sawyer, Nathan and Kelli Jo Schumacher, and Jake Arrowsmith; one sister: Jean and husband Jim Bell of Hartford, Wis.; one brother: Bob Schumacher and wife Linda of Medina, Ohio; sister-in-law: Marilyn Schumacher of Beloit, Wis.; brother-in-law: Aaron and wife Jean Hueneke of Bellvue; sister-in-law: Mildred and husband Cletus Davis of Dubuque; and numerous nieces and nephews.
