Betty Moellers, 82

    Funeral services for Betty Lou Moellers of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
    Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at the Conway Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. A parish vigil service was held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  
    Conway Funeral Home in Cresco is handling the arrangements.
    Betty, 82, died Saturday, August 29, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.
    Betty Lou Moellers was born April 13, 1927 in Waucoma the daughter of Glen and Mary D. (Dickens) Myers.
    On September 12, 1945 she married Rufus J. Moellers from Ossian. They farmed near Ridgeway from 1945 until 1988. She started making and decorating angel food cakes in 1971 and was very popular with her wedding cakes. She made cakes up to the time of her death.
    When she retired and moved to Cresco, she worked part time at Bernadette's Clothing Store.
    She is survived by her children: Wanda (Jerry) Reicks of Cresco, Zelda Lee (Steve) Price of Grand Rapids, MI, Rochel (Rick) Buck of Cresco, Cindy Lou (Duane) Omar of Cresco, and Kurt (Maureen) Moellers of Ridgeway; 14 grandchildren: Jamie Reicks and Mandy Olsen; Kristy Jones and Georgia Price; Crystal Stevenson and Kelsey Buck; David Omar, Jeremy Omar, Jessica Pullman, and Kayla Carroll; Justin Moellers, Derek Moellers, Travis Moellers and Trina Moellers; 16 great-grandchildren: Trae Riniker, Bailey Brunsvold, Aiden Reicks, Atley Olson, Austin Jones, Haley, Olivia and Blake Stevenson, Tristen Pullman, Madison Bakken, Bobby Carroll, Shawn, Kyler, Brandon, Logan and Sadie Omar.
    Betty Lou was preceded in death by her husband Rufus on March 14, 2009, a daughter: Sharon Mary; her parents, Glen and Mary Myers; and one brother: Gene Myers.
 


Bernard Cleveland, 69

    Memorial services for Bernard I. Cleveland of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco. 
    Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.  
    Bernard, 69, died at his home.
    Bernard Ira Cleveland was born February 21, 1940, in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Ira Joseph and Blanche Ilene (Jeffers) Cleveland. He went to school in Cresco. Bernie worked for the Sanitation Department and also was an accountant doing income taxes. He lived in Cresco all of his life. 
    He enjoyed reading, especially magazines, and he enjoyed drives through the countryside. 
    He is survived by two sisters: Barbara, and her husband, Gene Cleghorn from Waseca, MN and Juanita Grimm from Cresco; several nieces and nephews: Dennis Cheghorn, Brian Cleghorn, Deb Cleghorn, Nadine Cleghorn, Kim Goracke, Ronald Grimm, Tom Grimm, Randy Grimm, and Lori Bakken; and great nieces and nephews. 
    Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-in-law: Sylvester "Nick" Grimm; and one nephew: Michael Grimm.
 


Rochelle Scott, 73

    Funeral services for Rochelle A. (Andrews) Scott of Burt, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009 at the Burt Presbyterian Church. Interment was in East Lawn Memory Gardens in Algona.
    Lentz Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
    Rochelle, 73, died Monday, August 24, 2009 at the Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft.
    From the fall of 1957 to the spring of 1960 she taught mathematics at Crestwood High School.

Grace Berge, 90

Norma Wegner, 65

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Norma J. Wegner of New Hampton, IA will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton.
    Visitation was held Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center Gathering Space where there was a 3:30 p.m. Rosary and a 6 p.m. Scripture Service.
    Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton is handling the arrangements.
    Norma, 65, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at her home after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Robert Lewis, 54

    Funeral services for Robert "Bob" F. Lewis of Kendallville, IA were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.   
    Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
    Robert, 54, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 of Esophageal cancer.
    Robert Frank Lewis was born Aug. 4, 1955 in Harmony, MN, the son of Kenny and Darleen Lewis. Bob attended country school and graduated from Crestwood High School. After graduation Bob worked for K&E Lewis Farm Incorporated.
     He was married to Marlene Whitinger on April 20, 1974 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. They continued to live in Harmony where Bob continued to work on the family farm, until 1983. After farming, Bob began his career in insurance and in 1988 started working with Cresco Insurance Agency. In 2004 Bob was promoted to Agency Manager/ Vice President where he remained until his death.
    Bob enjoyed the simple pleasures in life: being with his family and friends and with nature.
    He is survived by his wife, Marlene; three children: daughters: Danyelle (David) Gansen and Krisa Lewis and son: Michael Lewis; two grandchildren: Thomas and Ethan Gansen; his step-mother: Phyllis Lewis; brothers: John (Carol Ryan) Lewis, David Lewis and Kirk (Lynne) Lewis; one sister: Deb (Larry Erickson) Lewis; two uncles: Bill (Hazel) Walker and Gene Lewis; one aunt: Katherine Lewis; plus many cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. 
    Bob was preceded in death by his parents: Kenny and Darleen; paternal and maternal grandparents; mother and father in-law; and two nephews.


Daryl Lusson, 79

    A Mass of Resurrection for Daryl D. Lusson of Forest City was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City with Father Henry Huber officiating. Organist was Mary Ann Andersen. Interment was in St. James Catholic  Cemetery in Forest City.    
    Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City handled the arrangements.
    Daryl, 79, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009.
    Daryl Dean Lusson was born February 15, 1930 in Alpha, IA, the son of Philip and Mary (Nienhaus) Lusson. He received his education in Ridgeway and graduated from Ridgeway High School.
    He entered the United States Air Force and served as a Radar Technician from 1948-1952, stationed in England for part of his tour.
    On January 26, 1953 he married Elizabeth "Betty" Neubauer at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. The family made there home in Cresco where Daryl worked for Larson's Furniture. He also managed a furniture store in Austin, MN.
    Daryl later took a position as territory manager for Bigelow Karistan Carpets. He traveled extensively thoughout Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois, receiving numerous awards for his performance and hard work. His company kept him on the move, living in several midwestern communities until moving to Forest City in 1975 and eventually retiring there. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Forest City.
    Daryl enjoyed golfing, traveling and boating. He liked taking a drive with Betty, chatting with his coffee buddies at Hardees and a game of cards with family and friends.
    He is survived by three children: Connie Lusson of Las Vegas, NV, Ron Lusson (Heidi) of Crystal Lake, and Rhonda Michels (Gary) of Ventura; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchldren; and a sister: Carole Johnson (Avey) of New Hampton.
    Daryl was preceded in death by his wife Betty; and his parents.


Margaret Hoge, 68

September 15, 2009
    A memorial celebration for Margaret A. (Soukup) Hoge of San Jose, CA, niece of Therese Busta of Cresco, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 3 in the Gathering Space at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Hampton. A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will follow and a celebration of Margaret's life will be held at Chaff's Restaurant in New Hampton after mass.
    Margaret, 68, died Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 at her home.
    She taught second and third grades at St. Mary's Catholic School in New Hampton until 1970 then she transferred to San Jose.

Caroll Busch, 70

    Funeral services for Caroll "Joe" O. Busch formerly of Cresco was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 at Grace Baptist Church in Waverly with Pastor Jim Lee officiating. His body was cremated. A private family burial will be held at a later date in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in rural Clarksville.
    Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Kaiser Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.   
    Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly handled the arrangements.
    Joe, 70, died Sunday evening, Sept. 6, 2009 at the Shell Rock Health Care Center of natural causes.
    Joe O. Busch was born January 23, 1939, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Christian and Caroline (Deike) Busch. Joe attended country school and then graduated from the Waverly High School in 1957.
    On October 17, 1958, he married Catherine Rosol and the couple were later divorced. Joe served with the U.S. Army reserves and was called to duty in 1959, at the Watuka Army Base in Arizona. Following his military career, Joe returned to Waverly, where he worked at the Carnation Plant. In 1973, Joe moved to Cresco, where he purchased the Cresco Lanes which he owned and operated until 1980, when he moved to Waverly, where he purchased the Waverly Bowl Inn. Later Joe sold the Waverly Bowl Inn and worked several miscellaneous jobs before moving to Buffalo Center, where in 1988 he purchased the Buffalo Lanes, which he operated until his retirement in 1998. Following his retirement, Joe remained in Buffalo Center until he became a resident of the Shell Rock Health Care Center on July 17, 2009.
    Joe enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, bowling, fishing and camping. 
    Joe is survived by his three daughters and their husbands: Joyce (Mike) Lowe of New Hampton, Monica (Daniel) Zabel of Waverly, and Kelly (Dan) Rustad of Waverly; four grandchildren; Heather Holt and her husband, Corby, Dustin Busch, Kyle and Grant Rustad; four great-grandchildren; Brianna, Carter and Caleb Larson and Mora Holt; one sister: Elaine Albrecht of Waverly; one brother: Mervin (Marcella) Busch of Janesville; and a sister-in-law: Marvel Busch of Tripoli.
    Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Lavern in infancy and Lowell; and a brother-in-law: Harlem Albrecht.

Charlotte Boice, 94

    Funeral services for Charlotte E. Boice of Harmony, Minn. were held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Interment was in Greenfield Lutheran Cemetery.

    Charlotte, 94, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at her home.

Mary Ries, 91

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary C. Ries of Elma, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in North Washington.
    Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. on  Thursday, Sept. 24 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 6 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. 
    Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.
    Mary, 91, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Colonial Manor in Elma.
    Mary Catherine Ries was born Nov. 15, 1917 to Lambert and Barbara (Pierre) Schwickerath in North Washington, IA. Mary attended St. Mary's School in North Washington.
    On Nov. 26, 1940 she married Ralph M. Ries at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington. Mary and Ralph rented farms for seven years in Chickasaw County and in 1947 they purchased their farm in Howard County, a mile west of Elma. In 1975 they retired and built a new home on the west side of Elma where Mary resided until moving into the Colonial Manor in January of 2007. She was an active farm girl growing up and farmed side by side with Ralph and their children. In 1978 she became a kitchen employee at Colonial Manor. The residents, staff and visitors fell in love with Mary's cookies and all the many baked goods she made. In 1993 Mary retired again to continue with other hobbies.
    Mary enjoyed crocheting, quilting, playing cards, baking and cooking, spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grand children and even a great-great-grandchild. She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a member of a women's club called Friends and Neighbors.
    Mary is survived by four sons: John L. (Cathy) Ries of Elma, Ed R. (Jean) Ries of Spring Valley, Minn., Mike L. (Janice) Ries of Cresco and Gary L. (Mary Jo) Ries of Elma; two daughters: Elaine (Chuck) Laures of Osage and Marilyn (Gary) Schaudenecker of Alta Vista; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother: Reynold (Corrine) Schwickerath of New Hampton; and one sister-in-law: Margaret Schwickerath of Ionia.
    She was preceded in death by her husband: Ralph on December 3, 2001; two daughters: Janice and Mary Ann in infancy; her parents; two sisters: Josephine Schwickerath and Martha (Vernon) Sinnwell; four brothers: Walter Schwickerath, Ed Schwickerath, Louis (Orella) Schwickerath and Vincent (Marie) Schwickerath.


Mark Tuchek, 56

    Memorial services for Mark A. Tuchek were held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco. Family greeted friends from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Private inurnment will take place in Oak Lawn Cemetery.    
    Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
    Mark, 56, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009 at Wellington Place in Decorah after a lengthy illness.
    Mark A. Tuchek was born February 5, 1953 in Howard County the son of David and Laverne (Halweg) Tuchek. He attended Howard-Winneshiek Schools and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1971. He then pursued a career for a short time in law enforcement with the Cresco Police Department while also working part-time for his dad at Sun Oil Company in Cresco.
    In September of 1976 Mark married Debra Hovey. To this union a daughter Kelsey was born. Mark and Debra purchased the Oil Company in November of 1979. They operated this business as Cresco Oil Company for a number of years and later divorced. Mark then bought a Victorian home in Cresco and named it The Corner Inn. He ran it for many years as a bed and breakfast. Mark was very proud of his home and business. He had many distinguished guests who stayed at the home, such as Past Governor Terry Branstad, also Chet Culver, and the King and Queen of Norway. Mark loved to visit with the guests and listen to their stories.
    Mark then got a job at Mississippi Welders in Decorah and worked there for a few years until his health started to decline. He loved his job very much and the people he worked for.
    Mark was a very versatile man and could figure just about anything out, especially if it was mechanical. He loved old cars, especially his 1970 GTO Judge he had in high school. He went on numerous road rallies and even drag raced at NEITA Raceway in Waterloo. His other love was animals, especially dogs. He had a special dog named Winnie that always rode in the gas truck. He then had Susie and up until his death, his newest pal, Sophie. Mark will always be remembered as a prankster and practical joker. He loved to play harmless jokes on friends and family members, some of which will never be forgotten. He was also an amazing cook.
    He is survived by one daughter: Kelsey Tuchek of Cresco; his father: David Tuchek of Cresco; a sister: Teri (Larry) Wyant of Cresco; two nieces: Carissa (Bill) Kocian of Cresco and Cassie Wyant of Dubuque; an aunt: Ruth Tuchek of Cresco; and numerous cousins.
    Mark was preceded in death by his mother; maternal grandparents; paternal grandparents; and aunts and uncles.

Mayme Wendl, 92

September 30, 2009
 

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Mayme R. Wendl of Rochester, Minn., formerly of Nashua, Elkader and Cresco will be held at 10:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Nashua with Msgr. Stanley Hayek officiating. The pall will be placed on the casket by her children. Her sons Ron and Steve Wendl will serve as lectors. The offertory gifts will be presented by Gina Cernohous and Bailey Cernohous. Pallbearers are: Matt Bruening, Joe Wendl, Dean Swenson, Nicole Wendl, Susan Petersen, Kathi Cernohous. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
    Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua where there was a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continues 9-10 a.m. today, Wednesday at the funeral home.

    Mayme, 92, died Sunday morning, Sept. 27, 2009 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester.
    Mayme Rosalyn Wendl was born June 12, 1917 in Fort Atkinson, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Novak) Houdek. She graduated from Rudophinum High School in Protivin in 1934 and attended Iowa Teachers College (now U.N.I.) for one year. She taught country school in Winneshiek County for two years before marrying Clarence Wendl on October 4, 1940 at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque. Six children were born to their union, five surviving to adulthood.
    Mayme was an outstanding homemaker and mother. After raising her children, she held several jobs in the Elkader area, including eight years as the first Activity Coordinator at the Elkader Care Center. Her energy, creativity, and deep compassion made her a natural for this type of work. She was a magnificent cook, excellent writer, and voracious reader. She loved music and dancing, especially her favorite polkas.
    After retiring, she and Clarence moved to Nashua until Clarence's death in 2004. She then moved to Sunrise Cottages in Rochester.
    Mayme is survived by three sons: Gil (Connie) Wendl of Charles City, Ron Wendl of Rochester, and Steve (Cindy) Wendl of Anamosa; two daughters: Diane Foley of Rochester and Judy (John) Bengfort of Winona, MN; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a brother: Lester (Jean) Houdek of Lakeville, MN.
    She was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter, Nancy Wendl 1941; her parents, Louis in 1966 and Anna in 1972; three brothers: Joseph, Louis, and Benjamin Houdek; and two sisters: Augusta Klimesh and Emma Kratz.


James Fisher, 71

    Funeral services for James "Jim" J. Fisher of Cresco will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in rural Elma. Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.
    Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Conway funeral Home in Cresco and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday morning at the funeral home.

    Jim, 71, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 at the Cresco Care Center after a long and courageous battle of diabetes and kidney disease.
    James Joseph Fisher was born January 31, 1938 in Elma, Iowa, the son of Louis F. and Josephine C. (Ludwig) Fisher. Jim grew up in the Lourdes area, attending a country school until eighth grade, graduating from Elma Public High School, Class of 1956. He immediately joined the USAF, training at Sheppard AFB, Texas, specializing in data processing.
    Stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, he returned to Elma, and married Patricia Louise Conway on June 28, 1958, in Elma. After his service, they briefly moved to Rochester, Minn., making a career move to the Chicago area, remaining there for 30 years.
    Jim was a noted and sought after computer operator and Director of Data Processing with various companies and school districts.
    Due to illness, he retired early and always yearned for his familiar home, Iowa. Returning in 1997, he took pleasure in joining his comrades during morning coffee gatherings, socializing with friends at the meal site, and a member of the local vision group. While still healthy, he was fond of camping always with his cherished Taco by his side. For years, Jim was a popular Santa Claus for local children's establishments and events, and senior centers. As the enthusiastic cook in the family, he was renowned for his menu specialties. Jim was an avid fan of Polka music and dance. He appreciated his circle of family and friends. Jim's day was complete with joke, prank and/or heartfelt laughter. Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia; two children: Jeffrey James (Janette) Fisher of Lindenhurst, Ill. and Laurie Ann Jermaczonak of Redmond, Ore.; three granddaughters: Nicole and Krystina Jermaczonak and Steffanie Fisher; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Louis, Joseph, Raymond, Francis (Leone), and sister: Alice (Charles) Miller.
