Kenneth William Maruska was born March 25, 1923 in Cresco, the son of William and Emma (Hosek) Maruska. He was baptized in his faith at St. Joseph's Church in Cresco, and was confirmed at Our Lady of Lourdes. When he was two years old, the family moved to the farm and lived with his grandfather. He attended the Paris #9 and the Rinn School through the eighth grade. He then went one year to the Parochial School in Lourdes and one year in Elma. Ken was living with an aunt and uncle near Ft. Atkinson when he received a notice from Uncle Sam to report for a physical. Following his medical discharge, Kenny was going to go to diesel school, but he would have had to go to Chicago and the folks didn't want Kenny to leave home. Instead, Kenny worked for three winters at Oliver Corporation in Charles City. Kenny was a farmer at heart and decided to stay on the farm taking care of his parents until their death. Kenny liked playing baseball and basketball as a young man and when he got older he enjoyed playing horseshoe. He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds, something he continued after he went into the nursing home. He enjoyed farming and loved baby calves. His favorite chore was bedding down the calves. Ken was also a very religious person and many times went to daily mass when the church was still very active. In 2002 he entered the Howard Residential Care Facility where he spent three years and has spent the last four years at Colonial Manor where he was very appreciative of the care he received. Kenny is survived by one nephew: Robert (Betty) Hosek of Elma; two nieces; great nieces and nephews; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Robert and his wife Nellie Hosek; and a niece: Patricia Schneider. Lucille Hosek, 95

Roger Eugene Larson was born in 1935 and moved with his parents and brother from Lime Springs to Cresco in 1946. He was a graduate of Cresco High School, St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. and the University of California, Berkeley, School of Architecture. He and Janice Thomson were married in 1956 and lived with their children in Berkeley and Carmel, Calif. during most of his architectural career. He and Janice moved to Port Ludlow, Wash. in 1991 and to Maiden Rock, Wis. in 2007, where they were living at the time of his death. Roger E. Larson, Architect/Planner, was a visionary architect, an unwitting mentor to many young people and a protector of the environment, especially old trees. Two of his proudest achievements were the development of a modular post and beam building system for houses of moderate cost and receiving a patent for the manufacturing process of building panels, made from recycled newspaper, to be used with the building system. In order to further make his houses affordable, Roger earned his contractor's license so he could build as well as design for his clients. He insisted, always, that architects make houses - people make homes. He was an accomplished landscape and architectural photographer. Throughout his life he maintained a keen interest in music and the arts, football and basketball, hiking and camping, as well as travel in the United States, Canada and Europe. He is survived by his wife, Janice; son: Dana; daughters: Kari and Maria; their partners: Lisa and David; brother: Paul Larson; in-laws: Jim and Carol Thomson; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert A. and Gladys Omoth Larson. David Dusheck, 57
