Lorna DeVries, 81

 

    Funeral services for Lorna M. DeVries of Cresco, IA and formerly of Chester, IA were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Chester with Rev. Candi Carey officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
    Friends were to call from 5-8 at the United Methodist Church in Chester on Thursday, April 2 and one hour prior to the service on Friday. 
    Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy, MN handled the arrangements.
    Lorna, 81, died Tuesday morning, March 31, 2009 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where she had resided for about four months. Prior to that she had been at the Patty Elwood Care Facility in rural Cresco for about four years.
    Lorna Mae Johnson was born August 24, 1927 in Brant, South Dakota the daughter of Victor Johnson and Mary (Lutterman) Johnson. She attended school and graduated from Sibley High School in Sibley, IA.
    On August 10, 1946 she married Alvin DeVries at her parents farm. After their marriage they lived near Sibley for a short time and then moved to Rushmore, MN where they lived for approximately nine years. In 1957 they moved to a farm near Chester, IA where they farmed for many years. 
    Lorna was a homemaker, she enjoyed painting, bird watching and gardening. She was a member of the Chester United Methodist Church and a member of the UMW.
    She is survived by her husband: Alvin of Chester, IA; three children: Doug (Janet) DeVries and Elaine (Gary) Gassett both of Lime Springs, IA and Denise (Danny) Miller of Rochester, MN; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Jean (Marshall) Janssen of Elkton, SD and Mavis Christians of Ballaton, MN.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Eldon and Dwane; and a sister: Dona.


Rosella Sando, 85

 

    Graveside services for Rosella I. Sando of Waukon, IA will be held at a later date at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Rosella donated her body to the University of Iowa.

    Rosella, 85, died Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.
    Rosella Irene Sando was born October 18, 1923 in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Lewis and Ida (Benson) Sando. She graduated from Waukon High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa where she received her Bachelor Degree. Rosella taught business classes in Colesburg, Blairstown and for 27 years in Cresco.
    She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was active in its ladies groups. Rosella was also a member of the Waukon Civic Club.
    Survivors include many cousins.
    She was preceded in death by her parents.


Danny Swenson, 54

    Funeral services for Danny W. Swenson of LeRoy, MN were held on Monday, April 6 at the LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy. Interment was in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in rural LeRoy.
    Friends were to call from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 5 at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy and one hour prior to the service at the church.

    Danny, 54, died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at his farm surrounded by his family and friends.

Kenneth Martin, 77

    Funeral services for Kenneth C. Martin of rural Riceville, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Melba Gilbert, 81

    Memorial services for Melba A. Gilbert of New Hampton, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Family inurnment will take place at the New Hampton City  Cemetery.

Mildred Dostal, 87

 

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Mildred R. Dostal of Protivin, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 13, 2009 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Marlene Pecinovsky was the organist accompanying Colleen Busta as vocalist and the Holy Trinity Resurrection Choir. Pallbearers were: William A. Zibert, Jason Smith, Brad Friedrichs, Mark Raiman, David Dvorak and Jim Kuennen. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Little Turkey, IA.
    Visitation was held from 9-10:30 a.m. Monday before the mass at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home.
    Mildred, 87, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Cresco Care Center.
    Mildred Rose Dostal was born on the Cisar family farm in rural Chickasaw County, IA, near Protivin, the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Hovorka) Cisar. She attended rural country school.
    She married Henry Anderson and to this union a daughter was born. The couple later divorced. On June 29, 1979, at Assumption Parish, Little Turkey, she married Francis John Dostal. She enjoyed helping Frank on the farm and with his trucking business. Frank died February 14, 1996.
    Mildred liked to play cards, mainly euchre, and she did not like to lose. She also had a love of her garden and enjoyed canning. Will Jo, her grandson, said she made the best Open Crock Sour Dill pickles he had ever tasted and her Baby Dills were one-inch long and picture perfect in the jar. She especially loved family gatherings and time spent with the grandchildren and great-granchildren.
    Survivors include one daughter, Lana (William) Zibert of Austin, MN; four grandchildren: Amy (Brad) Friedrichs of Eagle Lake, MN, Anne (Jason) Smith of Winona, MN, William A. (Angela) Zibert of Mankato, MN and Lisa Zibert of Winona, MN; and seven great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a sister: Irene Dvorak.


Barbara Vickers, 82

    Funeral services for Barbara J. Vickers of New Hampton, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11 at the United Methodist Church in New Hampton. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.
    Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Friday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

    A Mass of Christian Burial for John "Jack" W. Rosauer Jr. of New Hampton, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14 at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary's Center in New Hampton. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton.
    Friends were to call from 3-8 p.m. on Monday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continued 8-10 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Mildred Flaherty, 95

 

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Mildred A. Flaherty of Ridgeway, IA was held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13, 2009 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Lectors were Jon Flaherty and Amy Flaherty. Gifts were carried by Julie Langreck, Carol Kout and Lisa Reilly. Theresa Burke was the organist accompanying Pam Daley as vocalist. Eucharistic Ministers were Diane Ward and Francis Nibaur. Pallbearers were: David Polansky, Jerry Flaherty, Rick Hageman, Don Flaherty, Dean Kuhn, Kaleb Langreck. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes, IA.
    Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
    Mildred, 95, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at home.
    Mildred Ann Flaherty was born October 5, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Abby (Kubik) Nibaur in Lourdes, IA. Mildred graduated from eighth grade at Our Lady of Lourdes, Iowa.
    On October 16, 1933 she married John L. Flaherty at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. They lived and farmed near Lourdes. Mildred worked throughout her life as a homemaker and farm wife. She raised poultry, livestock and had a large garden. Mildred was known for her canning, baking and wonderful pies.
    She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Society. After John's death in 1977, Mildred moved to Cresco where she remained until 2005. With growing needs of assistance, she moved to Spillville and then to Ridgeway, to be close to family.
    Mildred enjoyed growing flowers, playing euchre with two jokers, listening to polka music and eating chocolate.
    Mildred is survived by her five children: Lorraine (Edward) Polansky of Spillville; Catherine (Ronald) Hageman of Calmar; Dorothy (Michael) Poshusta of Ridgeway; Tom (Kay) Flaherty and Robert (Janet) Flaherty, all of Lourdes; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and extended family including cousins, nieces and nephews.
    Mildred was preceded in death by her husband John; her parents: Frank and Abby Nibaur; three sisters: Regina Praska, Arlene Hyke and Rosella Nibaur; two brothers: Raymond Nibaur and a baby brother, Leo Nibaur, who died in infancy; her father and mother-in-law: John and Mary Flaherty; and three brothers-in-law: William Flaherty, Joe Praska, and Jim Hyke.


Edward Hubka, 81

 

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Edward F. Hubka of rural Waucoma, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin, IA with Rev. David M. Beckman officiating. Lector was David Hubka and Eucharistic Minister was Victor Fencl. Organist was Marlene Pecinovsky along with the Holy Trinity Choir providing the music. Pallbearers were: Tim Shimek, Amber Shimek, Bryan Hubka, Kelley Hubka, Michael Mackkin, Marissa Mackin, and Ken Pecinovsky. Taps were played by Michael and Dick Mackin. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin with Military Rites by American Legion Post #605.

    Edward, 81, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at his home in rural Waucoma.
    Edward F. Hubka was born October 11, 1927 on the farm in Howard County, Iowa, the son of Joseph J. and Anna (Tupy) Hubka. He graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin and was inducted into the Army to serve during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he returned home, bought the farm he presently lived on and started farming.
    On August 19, 1958 he married Pauline Pecinovsky at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, IA. They became the parents of three children, Dean, Deb and Mary. Farming was a good way of life for Ed and he enjoyed raising his family on the farm. He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Church and was active in it. Ed collected toys as a hobby, liked to play cards and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the V.F.W.
    He is survived by his wife: Pauline of Waucoma; his son: Dean (Shirley) Hubka of Cresco; two daughters: Deb (Dick) Mackin of Manly, IA; Mary (John) Shimek of Ridgeway, IA; six grandchildren: Bryan (Becki) Hubka, Kelley Hubka, Michael Mackin, Marissa Mackin, Tim Shimek and Amber Shimek; two great grandchildren: McKenna and Cameron Hubka.
    Edward was preceded in death by one sister: Helen Prochaska and four brothers: Fred, Joseph, Leonard and Clarence "Bro. Anthony" Hubka.


Kenneth Cooper, 93

    Funeral services for Kenneth Cooper of Lime Springs, IA will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Interment will follow services at the church at 3 p.m. at Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton, IA.
    Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday evening, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

    Kenneth, 93, died Saturday, April 18, 2009 in Mission, TX.

Mavis Wilson, 80

    Mavis E. (Betts) Wilson, 80, of Covina, CA died Tuesday, February 24, 2009. A private memorial service was held. She was born March 27, 1928 in Cresco the daughter of Roy Henry Betts and Gevina Rosalia Bjorgo.

Agnes Cerwinske, 93

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes S. Cerwinske of Alta Vista, IA will be held at 10:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Pallbearers are: Matt, Punk, Ron, Tom and Bob Cerwinske and Roger Blocker. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista.
    Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with a scriptural wake service at 5 p.m. and a rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the funeral home in Elma.

    Agnes, 93, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton, IA.

Donna Harding, 73

 

    Memorial services for Donna L. Harding were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the First Congregational Church in Cresco with Pastor Tim Sir officiating. Barb Larson provided the music.
    Donna donated her body to Mayo Clinic. Her desire was to contribute to the medical profession and education in the best way she knew how. Interment will be held at a later date at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.

    Donna, 73, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at her home after a brave battle with lung cancer.
     Donna Lucille Harding was born July 17, 1935 the daughter of Lester and Glora (Kjarland) Foss of Decorah, IA. Donna had one sister, Naomi, and two brothers, Galen and Roy.
    Donna married Richard Jagerson in 1955 in Decorah and to this  union were born two daughters, Barbara and Rebecca. The family later moved to Minneapolis. Donna and Richard were divorced in 1971. Donna met and married Darwin Harding in 1972 and relocated to Cresco. To this union three children were born, Robert, Craig and Karen. Donna and Darwin were later divorced.
    Donna entered the workforce while still attending high school,    working at Mode O Day clothing store and Fredrick's cafe but found ample time to roller skate with her friends and frequent Matter's Ballroom. She also worked at Bell Telephone Company as an operator in Decorah. She worked many years at Electric Wire Products in Minneapolis. After relocating to Cresco, Donna became a stay-at-home mom which was her greatest joy. As the kids grew up she once again entered the workforce as a house/office cleaner, waitress at the Tower Club and an elder companion.
    Donna had a great love of reading and could easily be found in the kitchen with a good book. She enjoyed crocheting and taught many. She loved to listen to music, and would get up and dance whenever the mood struck. She loved visiting with family, friends and neighbors; her door was always open to visitors. Nature walks on the Cresco Trail and Oneota Recreational Trail in Decorah were activities she enjoyed, especially when shared with family and/or friends. When her children were young she was active with Brownies and Girl/Boy Scouts and school events and always seemed to have time to bake up something quick for a child or grandchild's school event. She was always eager to help and the word "no" did not come easy to her. You would always find a smile on her face and you would never know she ever had a bad day.
    Donna is survived by her daughters: Barbara Jagerson, Rebecca (James) Jahr, Karen (Dominic) McGrane, and Marletta Harding (widow of Robert) and her son: Craig (Hilory) Harding; her grandchildren: James (Shannon) Jagerson, Shawn Kalvelage, Aaron Jagerson, Dodge McGrane, Emma Harding, Casper McGrane and Sarah Harding; and her two month old great-granddaughter Madilyn Kalvelage.
    She was preceded in death by her son: Robert Harding; her parents; her sister: Naomi Berg; and her nephew: Steven Berg.


Harold Craft, 92

 

    Funeral services for Harold L. Craft of Cresco, IA will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Notre Dame Church in Cresco. Music will be provided by Bootie Kapler and Cathy Hoffert, accompanied by Marilyn Novak. Lectors will be Katie Shimek, Kevin Kelly, and Isaac Shimek. Gift bearers will be Don Shimek, Dawn Kelly and Cary Burke. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery.
    Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

    Harold, 92, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.
    Harold Leonard Craft was born December 12, 1916, the son of William Ward and Cora Emily (Sebastian) Craft near Gibson, in Susquehanna County, PA. When Harold was about six months of age, the family moved to Howard County and lived in the Bonair, Schley area. Harold attended the rural school through the eighth grade. Following his education, he helped on the farm until he reached adulthood.
    On June 14, 1944 he married Helen Randak at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco, IA. Harold was a farmer at heart retiring from farming in 1959. He then moved into town and started working at the Huntting Elevator until he retired in 1978. He also did part time milk hauling and he drove people to various places. He worked with DeCo parts and volunteered at the hospital.
    Harold enjoyed old time music, and enjoyed watching baseball, with the Chicago Cubs being his favorite. He also enjoyed putting puzzles together and enjoyed spending time with his family. Harold always looked forward to his grandchildren coming and especially enjoyed watching them play ball. He also enjoyed playing cards and dice.
    Harold is survived by his wife Helen of Cresco; his children: Donna Kelly of Cresco, Roger Craft of Cresco, Ruth (Dave) Shimek of Clearwater, FL, Diane (Steve) Grandhandt of Boise, ID, and Harold Craft Jr. of Rochester, MN; 16 grandchildren: Kevin (Krista Peterson) Kelly, Pat (Heidi Kildahl) Kelly, Dawn (Terry Gossman) Kelly, Dennis Shimek, Donnie (Katie) Shimek, Daniel "D.J." (Sara) Shimek, Dylan (Jessica) Grandhandt, Darryn Grandhandt, Heather (Mark) Christopher, Jason (Tracey) Craft, Clinton (Michelle) Craft, Josh Erath, Jeremiah Craft, Kim (Roland) Shever, Tina (Dennis Hron) Burke, Cary (Craig Witt) Burke; 37 great-grandchildren: Graden Anderson, Blayne Kildahl, Kylar Kelly, and Easton Gossman; Chelsea, Summer, Alexis and Brooke Shimek, Isaac and Nicole Shimek, Kayla, Kylie, Zachary, and Logan Shimek; Alexis and Ayva Sol Gradhandt; Andrew, Ethen, Ania, Caleb, Joseph and Ellie Marie Christopher; Bethany and Kaitlyn Craft; Chris and Brittany Craft; Hunter and Brianna Shever, Nathan and Samantha Burke, Christopher Burke, Jordan and Tyler Harrington, Amber Hron, Bruce, Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo and Bailey Hageman; one sister: Marie (LeRoy) Baethke of Cresco; one brother: Ray (Aurilla) Craft of Waterloo; sisters-in-law: Doris Craft, Irene Kramer, Marcella (William) Halweg and Janet Wagner; and many nieces and nephews.
   Harold was preceded in death by two daughters: Carol Burke and Connie Craft; a granddaughter: Becky Kelly; his brothers: Kenneth, Harley, and Urban Craft; his sisters: Goldie Leferink and Dorothy Van De Weerd; brothers-in-law: Jim Kramer, William Leferink, Guy Van De Weerd; sisters-in-law: Betty Craft; and son-in-law: Frank Kelly.


Eleanore Sovereign, 80

    Eleanore K. Sovereign, 80, of East Grand Rapids, MI passed away Friday, April 17, 2009.
    Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service of Grand Rapids, MI handled the arrangements.
     Eleanore K. Sovereign was born in Cresco, Iowa attended Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelors degree in History.
    Eleanore was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She was an accomplished seamstress, tailor and gourmet cook. She was a longtime member of Mayflower Congregational Church.
    She is survived by a son: Brooke; grandson: Parker; her sister: Norma; and brother: Merlin.
    She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Oakley.

Dorothy Voves, 79

 

    Funeral services for Dorothy M. Voves of Cresco, IA were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. David Beckman officiating. The family placed the pall on the casket. The lector was Jenny Voves, the organist was Marlene Pecinovsky and the song leader was Miriam Humpal. David Voves was soloist and a Eucharist Minister. Linus and Linda Voves carried the gifts. Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin.

    Dorothy, 79, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where she made her home since February of 2002.
     Dorothy Marie Voves was born in Howard County, Iowa, near Davis Corners on November 30, 1929, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Moravetz) Voves. While a young girl, the family moved to numerous farms in the area. She received her education in various rural schools in Howard and Chickasaw Counties including one year at St. Bernard's in Alta Vista. Dorothy worked the Five and Dime in New Hampton, a Dry Cleaning establishment in Mason City then a dime store in Cresco followed by Tuchek's Dry Cleaners. In addition she cared for an uncle who had MS and was offered a job to help care for her uncles and their mother.
    She was an excellent cook, housekeeper and caregiver. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, and its Rosary Society. She enjoyed collecting Avon bottles and dolls. She also enjoyed making quilts and painting crafts.
    Dorothy is survived by one brother: Linus (Linda) Voves of Ionia, IA; one uncle: Roman Moravetz of Cresco; a cousin: Anna Mae Moravetz of Cresco; two nephews: Brian (Jenny) Voves of Lake Zurich, IL and David (Renee) Voves of Waverly, IA; and one niece: Renee Voves of Chicago, IL.
