A memorial service for Lucille M.
Byrnes of Cresco, IA was held at 10:30 a.m.
on Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Heritage
Events Center in Cresco.
Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on
Thursday, July 2 at the Conway Funeral Home
in Cresco and one hour prior to services on
Friday at the Event Center.
Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled
the arrangements.
Lucille, 82, died Saturday, June 27,
2009 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
She suffered for many years with heart
problems and cancer since 2001.
Lucille Marie Byrnes was born February
5, 1927 in Cresco, the daughter of Fred A.
and Mary (Wade) Gerber. Lucille was raised
in Cresco, but moved to Tacoma, WA, in 1945
with her family.
She married Robert Byrnes in Tacoma in
1947 and she and Robert moved back to Cresco
in 1948 to farm with his parents. For many
years they had a large dairy operation.
Lucille loved to crochet. She had many
flower gardens and loved to watch the birds
at their feeders. She and Bob also loved to
snowmobile. Bob on the snowmobile and
Lucille in the "Scaboose".
Lucille is survived by her children:
Jeanie Byrnes, Julie (Barry Nelson) Byrnes,
Tim (Thresea) Byrnes, Pat (Pam) Byrnes, and
Rick (Wanda) Byrnes, all of Cresco; nine
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
two sisters: Donna Ault of Seattle, WA; and
Hazel Gerber of Tacoma, WA; and many nieces
and nephews.
Lucille was preceded in death by her
husband, Robert; her parents; two infant
sons; three brothers: Paul, Herold and Glen
Gerber; three sisters: Edith Newhouse, Joyce
Mazza, and Rachael Janiga; and a grandson:
Kris Kaderabek.

Faragher of Cresco, IA formerly of Adrian
and Worthington, MN were held at 1:30 p.m.
on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Zion
Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth with Pastor
David Poppen officiating. Interment was in
Grand Prairie Cemetery in Ellsworth, MN.
Visitation was held from 5 p.m. to 7
p.m. on Wednesday, July 1 at the Dingmann
Funeral Home in Adrian, MN.

Daryl, 90, died Saturday, June 27, 2009
at the Regional Health Services of Howard
County in Cresco.
Daryl Joul Faragher was born June 8,
1919 in Adrian the son of Ray and Minnie (Joul)
Faragher. He graduated from Adrian High
School and later attended Nettleton Business
College in Sioux Falls. Daryl farmed on the
home farm after college.
On June 7, 1941 he married Dorothy
Essman in Ellsworth, MN. After their
marriage, the couple farmed north of
Ellsworth before moving to Adrian in 1975.
While living in Adrian, he was a salesman
for Moorman's Feed. Dorothy preceded him in
death on October 4, 1994. After her death
Daryl moved to Worthington.
On May 16, 1997, he married Vicki Thooft
and the couple made their home in
Worthington. In September of 2008, Daryl
moved to Cresco, IA to be closer to his
daughters.
Daryl was a member of the Westminster
Presbyterian Church in Worthington and a
former member of the Zion Presbyterian
Church in Ellsworth. Daryl was a people
person, he enjoyed dancing, especially the
polka and he also enjoyed listening to Big
Band music and fishing with his friends. He
was a long time member of the Lions Club and
served as District Governor, and was also a
member of the Elk's in Worthington. He
enjoyed his time at the Howard County
Residential Facility.
Daryl is survived by his wife, Vicki of
Marshall, MN; two daughters: Pat (Gordy)
Koehler of Cresco and SuAnn (Greg) Doschadis
of Peosta, IA; son-in-law: Everett (Marsha)

Visitation for Gayleen S. Colsch of
Preston, MN will be held from 3-4 p.m. on
Friday, July 10, 2009 at Lindstrom Funeral
Home in Harmony, MN with memorial services
directly following. Interment will be held
in Cedar Hill of rural Cresco, IA. A
celebration of her life will be held in her
honor with the Hall Boys performing on July
18 with arrangements pending and later to be
announced.
Gayleen Sue Bigalk was born March 25,
1955, the fourth of five children born to
Delbert and Gladys (Applen) Bigalk. She
often reminisced about wonderful childhood
memories growing up on their family farm
near Granger, MN. There was always a special
place in her heart dedicated to her parents,
especially her late father. Gayleen loved
working with the many animals on their farm,
and this compassion was everlasting. She
attended school in Cresco and attended
college in Calmar, IA. She was a proud
mother of her first daughter, Heidi Bigalk,
born March 13, 1975.
She married Mark Colsch, of Caledonia,
MN. They lived on Mark's family farm and
worked together on the Millwaukee Railroad.
They later resided in rural Cresco while her
husband worked with her family in farming
and beekeeping. As a farm wife, Gayleen was
appreciated for her exceptional cooking
talents, gardening skills, and creativity.
Mark and Gayleen were proud parents of three
more children, Paige, Tracy, and baby Todd.
Todd died shortly after birth in 1984. Their
family later relocated, and Gayleen most
recently moved to Preston, MN, to be closer
to her daughter, Paige, due to a decline in
her health.
She was passionate about music. She
loved nature, and spent many summers camping
out along the Upper Iowa River with friends
and family. Gayleen treasured her best
friend since childhood, Joan Landswerk.
She is survived by her husband, Mark
Colsch of Eitzen, MN; mother in law: Mary
Colsch of Caledonia, MN; children: Heidi
Bigalk of Harmony, MN; Paige Colsch of
Preston, MN; Tracy Colsch of Eitzen, MN;
brothers: Manley (Linda) Bigalk of Cresco,
Terry Bigalk of CO; sister: Ann (Carl) Fabre
of Austin, TX; four grandchildren: Shae
Bigalk, Lyndon Arnold, Kael Huffman, and
Scarlet Colsch; and many nieces and nephews.
Gayleen was preceeded in death by a son;
Todd Terry Colsch; her parents; and a
brother: Larry.

Larry, 76, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009.
Larry Hatzel Hathaway was born August
10, 1932 in Hammond, IN the son of Hatzell
H. and Ila "Mae" (Bircher) Hathaway. He
spent his childhood and young adulthood in
Loretta/Draper, WI on the family farm. Larry
attended Draper High School and graduated
valedictorian of his class in 1950.
On August 16, 1952 he married St. Zeota
May Hansen in Winter, WI and they raised
five children. Larry went on to college at
the UW- Eau Claire receiving his Bachelor of
Science degree. In the years ahead he
continued his education and received his
Masters Degree in Science from UW-Madison.
Larry taught sciences in Ridgeway, IL and at
Monona Grove High School in Madison, WI.
After retiring from teaching, he became a
Field Representative for the Wisconsin
Education Association; later the Executive
Director of the Parma Education Association,
Parma, OH; and finally the Executive
Director of the Green Bay Education
Association, Green Bay, WI where he remained
until he retired. In 1989, Zee and Larry
moved to Teal Lake near Hayward, WI and
operated their successful, educational
recognition and awards business, Apple
Awards Inc., until 1997. After Zeota's death
in 2000, Larry remained in the Hayward area
enjoying life in his Geodesic Dome home on
the Chippewa River. In 2005 health concerns
brought him to Cresco, IA to be near his
family.
During his lifetime, Larry especially
enjoyed walks in the WI Northwoods; taking
pictures of flowers and plants -
particularly native orchids. He took great
pleasure in visiting with new and longtime
friends, sharing memories of his life in a
WI rural community during the 1930's and
1940's. He was an amateur photographer,
winning a prestigious award in 1979 in a
Kodak International contest. He was also an
avid camera collector as well as a
stereoscopic card collector with a special
interest in historic logging and forestry
images. He was a member of The Forest
History Association of Wisconsin. Larry was
active in the Chequamegon Lions Club and
also served as a club officer. He spent
many happy hours visiting with friends at
the Spider Lake Meal Site, Hayward, WI and
at Country View Adult Day Care in Cresco,
IA. Larry loved a good meal, singing and
notably, Zeota's Banana Cake.
Grandchildren remember him well for his
early morning wake up calls to breakfast by
means of exuberant whistling & singing and
his trademark - homemade pancakes and
waffles.
Larry is survived by five children:

Bay, WI, Karyn (Earl) Henry Jr. of Cresco,
IA, Michael (Lucy) Hathaway of Danville, IN,
Daniel Hathaway of Hastings, NE and Andrea

15 grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife,
Zeota; his parents; and one sister: Jo Ann
(Steve) Krynski.

Marjorie, 82, died Wednesday, July 1,
2009 at Mercy Medical Center following an
extended illness.
Marjorie Arlene Oliphant was born
December 25, 1926 in Cresco, IA, the
daughter of John and Hulda (Hamann) James.
She married Hartzell E. Oliphant on
April 6, 1946 in Cresco. She was employed
for many years at Life Investors and Aegon
in retirement investments.
She was a member of ABWA, Elk's
Auxiliary, and a 50 plus year member of
Kenwood Park United Methodist Church where
she was involved in Lydia's Circle, and
numerous other church activities. She
enjoyed traveling with her husband, reading,
and above all time she spent with her family
whom she loved dearly.
Survivors include her husband of 63
years Hartzell "Ollie" Oliphant; children:
Janice Oliphant of San Antonio, TX, and
Larry Oliphant and wife Debbie of Milwaukee,
WI; grandchildren: Jana, Kari, Nathan, Alex,
Jeremy, Delaine and Justin;
great-grandchildren: Michael, Christian,
Alaina, Noah, Alexa, Kaedyn and Morgan; and
two sisters: Ila Johnson and husband Paul of
North Liberty, and Marvel Grabau of Cresco.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and one great-grandchild.

Robert, 70, died Sunday, July 5, 2009 at
the Cresco Care Center where he made his
home since August 29, 2007, from
complications of progressive MS and
dementia.
Robert Adolph Randak was born March 30,
1939, the only child of Adolph and Clara (Koudelka)
Randak in Howard County, Iowa. He received
his education at the country school two
miles east of Schley trough second grade,
the country school south of Schley from
third grade through eighth grade until going
to Cresco High School and graduating in
1957.
After graduation, Robert helped his
parents on the farm and then went to work at
Oliver Corp factory in Charles City for 13
years. In June 1962 he was drafted into the
US Army and served there until March 1964
being stationed in Fort Leonard, MO, Fort
Gordon Georgia, Scholfield Barracks,
Honolulu, Hawaii, and Laos.
On December 26, 1962, he married
Margaret O'Donnell at Holy Cross Catholic
Church in Schley. After returning from
service he and Margaret farmed north of
Lourdes for 41 years until his health caused
them to retire in 2006.
His hobbies included working in his shop
on his antique tractors, going for morning
coffee, and spending time with the
grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his wife Margaret;
a son: Jeffrey of Cresco; a daughter: JoAnn
(Jeff) Dean of Lisbon, IA; three
grandchildren: Alex and Andrew Dean, and
Aaron Randak; two sisters-in-law: Florence
Reicks of Alta Vista and Mary O'Donnell of
St. Cloud, MN; brother and sister-in-law:
Jim and Charlotte O'Donnell of Elma; sister
and brother-in-law: Irma and Bill Luss of
St. Lucas, IA; and brother-in-law: Francis
(Phyllis) Dietrich of Elma, IA.
He was preceded in death by his father:

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ludmilla L. Humpal of Calmar, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Lectors were Donna Humpal and Lana Duff. Marlene Pecinovsky was pianist, Laurie Ahrndt was song leader and Ann Schmidt and Miriam Humpal were soloists. Music for the mass was "On Eagles Wings", "Blest Are They", "Hail Mary: Gentle Woman", "Goin Home", "Sing With All the Saints In Glory". Eucharistic ministers were Lester Humpal, Edith Humpal, Amy Humpal and Jennie Reicks. Mass servers were Jacob Humpal, Zachery Duff, Kody Reicks and Kyle Reicks. Memorial tribute was given by Lana Duff. The gifts were brought to the altar by Ludmilla's children. Pallbearers were: Kenneth Humpal, Lester Allen Humpal, Richard Humpal, Theresa Jeandron, Amy Humpal, Deborah Humpal, Katherine Humpal and Ann Schmidt. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville.
Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. There was a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 6 p.m. Prayer Service on Sunday.

Ludmilla, 95, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco, IA after a short illness.
Ludmilla Lu Humpal was born October 24, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Bily) Kuboushek on the family farm near Spillville, IA. Ludmilla attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School, when she was young. She enjoyed going jackrabbit hunting with her brother, Jim.
On October 3, 1938 she married Adolph Humpal at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Together they farmed west of Spillville for many years. Ludmilla enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, doing farm work, and being outside. She enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones play basketball and all-star wrestling. Ludmilla was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and was an active Guild member.
Ludmilla's survivors include her daughter: Lorraine Humpal of Calmar, IA; four sons: Lester (Edith) Humpal of Calmar, IA, Adolph Jr. (Miriam) Humpal of Protivin, IA, Cletus (Maxine) Humpal of Ridgeway, IA and Roger Humpal of Calmar, IA; two brothers-in-law: Stanley (Kay) Humpal of Decorah, IA and Rudolph (Rita) Humpal of Decorah, IA; 14 grandchildren: Lana (Kevin) Duff, Donna (Michael Pash) Humpal, Lester (Ann) Humpal, Richard (Tammy) Humpal, Lawerence (Rebecca) Humpal, Theresa (Steve Jeandron) Katherine Humpal, Kenneth (Khristine) Humpal, Deborah Humpal, Jennifer (Mike) Reicks, Ann (Brent) Schmidt, Laurie (Martin) Ahrndt, Sara (Dennis) Bakula, and Amy (fiance, Cole Hoscheit) Humpal; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Ludmilla was preceded in death by her husband: Adolph Humpal on August 20, 1972; her parents: Frank and Mary Kuboushek; one sister: Mary Sobolik; and three brothers: James, Joseph and Charles Kuboushek.

Stanley died Thursday, July 16, 2009 at LifeCare in Houston, TX. On June 17, 2009 he became ill and was admitted to the Ennis Regional Hospital of Dallas, TX. After spending 29 days in the hospital, his life was cut short at the age of 70.
Stanley Baldwin was born March 4, 1939 in Cresco, IA the son of Ira Judd and Della (Potter) Baldwin. He attended Cresco Schools and was raised by his father. In February 1957 he joined and served in the United States Navy. In 1960 he married Leone Kilby. Two sons were born to this union, Clark and Corey. In December 1985 he moved to Ennis, TX due to his job.
Stan loved fishing, the outdoors, or just standing around visiting. He took many trips to Canada fishing with his friends and sons. One of his favorite times was going to Galveston with his wife fishing for flounder, which was his favorite fish to eat. He did this for 23 years. He also loved his computer, buying and selling, and getting emails from his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie (Hesse) Baldwin; two sons: Clark (Rhonda) Baldwin of Menomonie, WI, and Corey of Cresco, IA; four grandchildren: Clint, Jared, Brandon, and Danielle; four step children: Donna (Larry) Quam of Decorah, IA, Debbie (Joe) Kaiser of Bangor, WI, Steve (Anita) Hesse of Decorah, IA, and Tammy Wirick of St. Louis, MO; 12 step grandchildren including Alex, Bethany, and KaLee Blaess; along with two step great-grandchildren.
Stan was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Baldwin; one granddaughter: Sarah Elizabeth; his parents; three brothers; and five sisters.

Ronald, 63, died Thursday, July 23, 2009 in Burlington, IA.
Ronald was born April 18, 1946 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Raymond S. and Alice D. (Uhlenhake) Frana.
On June 14, 1969 he married Carol S. Parker in St. Ambrose Church, Milan.
Ronald was a United States Army Veteran having served in Vietnam. Ronald was currently employed at Case-New Holland in Burlington as a quality assurance engineer.
He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W., both of Lawler. Ronald enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed working on the farm, fixing things up, fishing, boating and spending time in the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; sons and daughters-in-law: Demetrius (Kathleen) Frana of Clinton, IA, Raymond Frana of New Haven, IA, Eric Frana of Rock Island, IL, Chad (Molly) Frana of Washington, IA; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Joshua, Kurt, Wyatt, Handy, Jade, Jacob, Samantha, and Lane; siblings and spouses: LaVonne (Jim) Prochaska, Jane Lane, Tom (Connie) Frana, Rebecca (Brian) Guthrie, and Ted (Cindy) Frana.

A Celebration Service of Life for Clara Bruns will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Following a reception after the service at Immanuel, there will be an Inurnment Service for her ashes at Bloomfield Cemetery near Ostrander, MN at 4:00 p.m. (Maps to the cemetery will be available at the reception).

Clara B. Bruns, 101, died at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco after a brief illness of renal failure.
Clara B. Bruns was born July 16, 1907 the daughter of Johann and Taletta Penning in Hollen, Ostfriesland, Germany.
On April 27, 1935 she married Dirk Bruns. Clara worked hard on the farm in Germany with her husband. They raised three children, Georg, Johann and Gerda.
In 1954 the family immigrated to the United States from Germany. They settled on a farm they purchased near Ostrander, MN. Clara found that farm work was a lot easier in the United States with machinery than with all the manual labor in Germany. She learned to speak, read and write the English language at age 47. In 1964 the whole family received their US Citizenship in Minneapolis, MN.
Clara enjoyed gardening, cooking and crocheting. She was also always very active in the women's circle in her church. Dirk and Clara retired from the farm in 1969 and moved to Cresco, IA. Her husband, Dirk died in 1979. She stayed in her home in Cresco till she was 96 and then moved into the Cresco Care Center.
Clara is survived by three children: a son Georg Bruns and his wife Pat of Ostrander, MN, her son Johann Bruns and his wife Helen of Anchorage, Alaska, and her daughter Gerda T. Knowles and her husband Richard of Brownsville, TX; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and one sister: Meta Memmen of Germany.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson: Derek Bruns; her parents; and two brothers.
