for Evelyn L. Nicholson of Osage, IA was held at
10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. John
Moser officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart
Cemetery.
Visitation was from 5:30 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30 at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a
rosary at 6 p.m.

Evelyn, 80, died Tuesday,
July 28, 2009, at the Osage Rehabilitation and
Health Care Center in Osage.
Evelyn Louise Nicholson was
born June 6, 1929, near Lourdes, Iowa, the
daughter of Louis and Louise (Shimek) Maravetz.
On July 29, 1952 she married
Richard Nicholson at Lourdes. They moved to
Osage in 1976.
Evelyn was a homemaker and
daycare provider. She was a member of Sacred
Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Guild in
Osage. Evelyn loved gardening, her flowers,
dancing, polka music, and embroidery.
Evelyn is survived by her
husband, Richard of Osage; two daughters: Nancy
(Gary) Bailey of Story City, Theresa (Gary)
Gauger of Bennington, NE; a son: Ron (Diane)
Nicholson of Waverly; four grandchildren: Beth
Nicholson, Sean Bailey, Jessica Gauger, and
Emily Gauger; one sister: Marjorie (Leo) Weber
of Charles City; and two brothers: Arnold
Maravetz of Elma, and Ray (Ann) Maravetz of
Riceville.
She was preceded in death by
two grandsons: Matthew Nicholson and Ryan
Bailey; her parents; and a sister: Clementine
Meier.

Aileen, 92, died Wednesday,
July 22, 2009, at Regional Health Services of
Howard County Hospital in Cresco.
Aileen Mae Hammel was born
July 16, 1917 at Dorchester, Iowa, the daughter
of Joseph and Rose (Duffy) Schulte. She grew up
in the Waukon area and graduated from high
school at Waukon. Aileen attended Normal School
and began teaching in the rural schools of
Allamakee County.
In 1937 Aileen married Layton
Hammel of Postville, IA. They moved to Cresco in
1942. Aileen raised her family and worked as a
bookkeeper for various businesses in Cresco. She
also operated her own business called the Cresco
Fabric Shop.
Aileen was a member of the
Assumption/Notre Dame Church, a member of the
Assumption Rosary Society, and enjoyed the
hobbies of gardening and china painting.
She is survived by her
children: Douglas of Cedar Falls, IA, Constance
(Tom) Sacra of Tucson, AZ, Gregory of Mason
City, IA and Thomas (Linda) of Delafield, WI;
nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one
sister: Karen Hammel of Cedar Rapids, IA; and
one brother: Leon Schulte of Waukon, IA.

for James "Jim" F. Klobassa of Elma, IA will be
held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, August 5,
2009 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta
Vista with Father Ray Atwood officiating.
Pallbearers are Al Baxter, Cletus Bullerman,
Kurt Elliot, Arnie Krukow, Josh Douglas, and
Mike Klobassa. Honorary pallbearers are Don
Klobassa, Larry Klobassa, Jeff Hanson, Gary
Torney, Joe Meirick, Mickey Baltes, Terry Baltes
and John Sculley. Escort and Honor Guard will be
provided by Mitchell County Sheriff's Department
and area Police and Troopers. Interment will be
in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista.
Visitation was from 4:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4 at
Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with a
scriptural wake service at 5 p.m. Visitation
will continue one hour prior to the service at
the funeral home in Elma.

James, 59, died Sunday,
August 2, 2009 at Colonial Manor in Elma.
James Francis Klobassa was
born April 10, 1950 the son of Francis and
Arlene (Vokaty) Klobassa in New Hampton, IA. Jim
attended school at St. Williams in Alta Vista
and graduated from Crestwood High School in
Cresco in 1968. Jim was a police officer in Elma
and Riceville. In 1977 he joined the Mitchell
County Sheriff's Department retiring in 2006.
Jim was also active in farming most of his life.
He especially enjoyed managing his cow-calf
herd.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing
and spending time at the Mississippi River at
Lansing. His true loves were his daughters. He
was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in
Alta Vista.
Jim is survived by his
mother: Arlene Klobassa of Elma; two daughters:
Kristi and Kayci Klobassa of Elma; one sister:
Charlene (Larry) Meirick of Alta Vista; one
brother: Gary (Marilyn) Klobassa of Alta Vista;
and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by
his father: Francis on July 24, 2005; and a
brother: Joseph in infancy.

Burial for Helen Pecinovsky of Protivin, IA
was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August
1, 2009 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in
Protivin with Rev. David M. Beckman
officiating. Mass servers were Nick Meirick
and Riley Meirick. Lector was Karla
Dietzenbach, the Gift Bearers were Celia
Neuzil, Helen Neuzil and Amy Schmitt, and
the Eucharist Ministers were Bill Berka,
Phyllis Mashek and Wendy Meirick. The
organist was Marlene Pecinovsky and the
singers were Daryl Kuehner and Harlan
Mikota. The pallbearers were Keith
Dietzenbach, Andy Schmitt, Cody Randall,
Willie Schmitt, Ben Schmitt and John
Schmitt. Interment was in Holy Trinity
Cemetery in Protivin.

Helen, 93, died
Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Evans Memorial
Home in Cresco where she lived for the past
six years.
Helen Pecinovsky was
born March 24, 1916, the daughter of Frank
Alois and Mary (Riha) Stika in Howard
County, Iowa. Helen grew up on a farm
working with her father.
On August 23, 1937 she
married William G. Pecinovsky at the Holy
Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They
farmed together for 35 years six miles North
of Protivin where Helen had a large garden
and did a lot of canning. She always had
laying hens and raised ducks and geese. She
helped her husband milk cows by hand until
he purchased a milking machine. Helen made
the best rye bread and shared it with many.
Helen joined the Senior Citizens group in
Protivin in 1972 and was president of the
organization for 15 years.
In 1973, Bill and Helen
moved to Protivin. Helen kept up her
gardening and did a lot of babysitting in
Protivin. She also worked for a nursery
where she planted trees in spring and at
Wapsie Produce at Decorah in fall. Helen was
a very caring and giving person and took
great pride in her family. She enjoyed
having her grandchildren come and stay over.
Most of the children in the Protivin area
called her Grandma Helen, even though she
was not their grandmother.
Helen's hobby was taking
pictures and putting together albums for all
to enjoy viewing. She also liked to write in
her journal every day and work on family
histories. One of the highlights in Helen's
life was her trip to Czechoslovakia in 1992
with her daughter Rebecca Neuzil. After her
husband passed away, Helen spent winters in
Florida at her son's home.
Helen's survivors include
her daughter: Rebecca (Cyril) Neuzil of
Spillville; sons: Dennis (Frances)
Pecinovsky of Cresco, and Glen (Lulu)
Pecinovsky of Tallevast, FL; 11
grandchildren: Cathy Dietzenbach, Susan
Schmitt, Steve J. Neuzil, Lorna Neuzil,
Craig W. Neuzil, Colleen Randall, Shawn
Pecinovsky, Linda Heiselman, Laura Smith,
Denise Northup and Paul Pecinovsky; 25
great-grandchildren; and two half sisters:
Lillian Rolfes, and Cecelia (Elmer) Rolfes;
along with nephews and nieces.
Helen was preceded in
death by her husband in 1987; her mother in
1920; her father in 1946; sisters: Emma
Pecinovsky, Elizabeth Marhoul, Edith Loberg;
and brother: Edward Stika.

Johnny, 85, died
Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the Hospice
House, Josie Harper Residence in Omaha.
Johnny Edward Clark was
born in Cresco, the son of John C. and
Anastasia (Moudry) Clark.
He married Gloria A.
Walsh on Nov 5, 1946. She preceded him in
death.
He married Joan (Pewsey)
Stickrod Sept 5, 1998.
Johnny's life was forever
changed by World War II when his farm-boy
aspirations of becoming a pilot were
fulfilled by entering the Army Air Corps
Aviation Cadet program right out of high
school. He was proud to serve his country
for 22 years in the Air Force, piloting over
20 types of planes from B-17s to B-47s, with
over 8000 hours of flying time. During his
service he enjoyed living abroad in England
(during WW II), Germany (during the Berlin
Airlift), and Italy. Johnny put himself
though the military's "bootstrap" program,
earning a BS general education and economics
degree at the University of Nebraska-Omaha
and a Masters in economic development from
the U of Oklahoma.
After his retirement from
the Air Force at age 42, he began a 20-year
career as an Industrial Developer with
Northern Natural Gas Company in Omaha, from
which he retired in 1985.
He enjoyed reading
historical nonfiction, gardening, hunting,
fishing, flying, attending air shows,
listening to classical and polka music, and
traveling. Throughout his life he was a
globetrotter, making several trips to
Russia, Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico,
and around the U.S. Johnny was proud of his
Czech ancestry. He loved the sun and liked
being a Winter Texan with Joan in the
Enchanted Village Ranch in Mission, Texas.
In 2005 he published his biography, From
Hayseed to Jet Pilot and Beyond, for which
his family is forever grateful.
He is survived by his
wife Joan; a daughter: Kathleen Newman (Tom)
of Champaign IL; a son: John Joseph Clark
(Janet) of Lincoln, NE; a brother-in-law:
Larry Walsh of San Diego, CA; a
sister-in-law: Martha Clark of Cresco, IA;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his wife: Gloria; his parents; a brother:
Joseph; a sister: Mariann Hidding; and a
brother-in-law: Thomas Hidding.

He received his

education, he
worked for
various farmers
until he entered
the United
States Army.
Following his
discharge, he
returned home
and for a few
years he worked
on construction,
which followed
the training he
received in the
service.
On July 27,
1957, he married
Kathleen Kimber
at the Burr Oak
United Methodist
Church. They
farmed in the
Burr Oak area
until his health
would no longer
permit and they
moved to Cresco
in June of 2007.
Roger also drove
school bus for
North Winneshiek
Community School
for 32 years and
developed a
friendship with
many of the
children on his
route. Roger
enjoyed
woodworking
projects,
hunting and
fishing and
taking his dog
out and getting
wood. He also
enjoyed riding
motorcycles.
He is survived
by his wife

Funeral services for Jack L. Darland, Sr. of Cresco, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. It was Jack's wishes to be cremated after services and his remains placed in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Jack, 87, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.
Jack LeMar Darland was born January 5, 1922 at Barnes City, Iowa, the son of George Farrell and Erma Hazel (Jones) Darland. He graduated from West Waterloo High School. He entered Iowa State Teachers College in 1940. In October of 1942 he entered the U.S. Navy and served until he was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1948. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Social Studies and Physical Education, and also obtained his Masters Degree in Physical Education in 1955 from the University of Iowa.
On April 11, 1942 he married Marguerite "Peggy" Prichard at Hannibal, MO. Jack taught school and coached basketball for nine years at Oelwein; four years at Iowa Wesleyan College at Mt. Pleasant; one year at Vinton; five years at West High in Waterloo; and taught 15 years at Cresco.
Jack enjoyed his years teaching and coaching, following the Iowa Hawkeyes, playing golf, and family outings.
He is survived by his wife Peggy; six children: Mike (Barb) of Oelwein, Polly (Dave) Suntken of Clear Lake, Tim (Marilyn) of Iowa Falls, Jack Jr. (Robin) of Dike, Pat of Cresco, and George of Strawberry Point; 11 grandchildren: Jason and Tom Darland, Jacci (Darland) Meyers, Mike, Chris, Scott Suntken, Sommer, Liberty, Ian Darland, Tyler Darland, Justin Stensrud; six great-grandchildren, Kylinne Darland, Bennett & Jace Suntken, Riley and Shea Suntken, and Michael Darland; and one brother: Bill (Nancy) Darland of St. Louis, MO.
Jack was preceded in death by a grandson: Kyle Darland; his parents; sister: Joyce Dahlberg; and brother-in-law: Waldo Dahlberg.

Funeral services for Clarence C. Steffen of Cresco, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Notre Dame Church in Cresco with Rev. Richard J. Ament officiating. The lectors were Chris Steffen and Leroy Webb. Marilyn Novak accompanied Bootie Kapler with the music. Pallbearers were: Matt Kobliska, Warren Steffen, Al Hrdlicka, Martin Koudelka, Ray Murray, and Randy Rice. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Visitation was held from 4 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. There was a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Clarence, 86, died Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
Clarence Charles Steffen was born August 18, 1922 the son of Jacob P. and Catherine Marie (Arens) Steffen. He attended St. Joseph's School and the rural school near his home. Following his education, he worked for various farmers.
On April 12, 1944 Clarence married Evelyn Chyle at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Following their marriage, they lived on his family's farm until they purchased the farm near Kendallville where they lived until they moved into Cresco in the late 1970s. During the time on the farm, Clarence also drove truck for H & W Freight out of Decorah. Clarence was part owner of the Cresco Dray for a short time.
Clarence enjoyed fishing, playing softball and riding bikes with his son, Chris. He continued his enjoyment of riding bicycles and listening to old time and big band music into his later years. He raised angus cattle, enjoyed fixing things such as tractors and showing Chris how to do these things. Clarence liked to travel and took trips out west to see the country.
He was a member of Notre Dame Parish, the Knights of Columbus Council #1571 and a former member of the Teamsters Union.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn Steffen of Cresco; his son: Chris (Connie) Steffen of Lincoln, NE; two grandchildren: Katy and Michael; one great-granddaughter: Madalyn; and one brother: Gerald (Elaine) Steffen of Cresco.
He was preceded in death by one brother: William Steffen and one sister: Gladys Koenigsfeld.

Doris M. Howard, a long-time resident of Cresco died Monday, August 3, 2009, at the age of 92, in Brookine, MA where she resided near her daughter Ann and son-in-law, Larry.
Doris Maurine Howard was born in Delight, AR, the daughter of John and Anna (Brown) Kakac, the oldest of seven children.
She married J. Robert (Bob) Howard in Cresco in 1939. During World War II, she was at home with two young children while her husband served in the US Army. In Cresco, Doris received her schooling and worked for the major part of her life. She was an expert in shorthand and bookkeeping and used those skills in various businesses and agencies including the Cresco Union Savings Bank, Burgess (later Spahn and Rose) Lumber yard, Nehl McKone's Insurance Agency, Elwood and Anderson (later Anderson and Story), and she was the legal secretary to Frank Elwood when he was first appointed US district judge. She was a member of the Cresco American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years and she served on the board of the Cresco Public Library.
Doris loved music. She was also an avid golfer and an accomplished needle worker, winning blue ribbons at the county fair for her embroidery work. She was highly skilled in knitting and sewing. She was constantly experimenting with recipes, making bread and entertaining.
She retired in 1981, and moved to Athens, Georgia to live with her daughter and son-in-law. There she was actively involved in the Auxiliary of St. Mary's Hospital and worked as a volunteer at the University of Georgia Botanical Garden where she was recognized for countless hours of service. In 2003, she moved to Massachusetts.
Doris is survived by four children: Ann of Brookline, MA, William of Portland, OR, John Paul of Marshalltown and Mark of Colorado Springs, CO; six grandchildren: Bronwyn, Howard McCarty, Caitlin Howard, Alexa Howard Harting, Andrew, Joseph and Lauren Howard; three great-grandchildren: Jane and Ben Harting and Emryn McCarty; a sister: Mary Elizabeth Flanagan of Soda Springs, ID; and a brother: Jerald of Indianapolis; a brother-in-law: James T. Howard; and sisters-in-law: Betty Howard Grange and Joan Howard Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977; and four brothers: David, John, Kenneth and Richard.

Paul, 79, died Sunday, August 16, 2009, at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco where he had been living after being diagnosed with a fast growing malignant brain tumor.
Paul Anton Seifried was born November 19, 1929 on a farm near Pocahontas, the oldest of four boys born to Anton and Rose (Hegman) Seifried. He started school in Pocahontas. The family moved to a farm near Manson where he completed his education graduating from Manson High School. He served in the army from 1951-1953, during the Korean conflict. After being discharged from the army he returned home and began farming in the Manson area.
On October 9, 1954 he married Margaret "Peg" Svejda at St. Joseph Church in Palmer. They became parents of three children, Jennifer, Michael and Lynn. In 1965, they moved to their current home near Cresco, where they continued farming until Paul became ill.
Paul loved the farm, it was his life passion. He enjoyed traveling, visiting with friends and visited shut-ins in the nursing homes regularly.
Paul is survived by his wife, Peg of Cresco; daughter: Jenny (Mike) Rohrssen of Ames; son: Michael (IDA) Seifried of Dunwoody, GA; and daughter: Lynn Seifried and husband John Schipke of Minneapolis, MN; five grandchildren: Katie Teply, Maggie and Samantha Rohrssen, and Brian and Erica Seifried; his brothers: Elmer (Donna) Seifried of Humbolt, Jerome (Mary) Seifried of Hiawatha, and Msgr. Kenneth A. Seifried of Holstein.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Karen Laub-Novak of Washington, D.C. and Lewes, Del. died Wednesday morning, August 12, 2009 at the age of 71 from cancer. Services were held on August 17 at the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Washington, D.C.

Sculptor, painter, print-maker and writer, Karen Laub-Novak constantly searched the traditions of the old masters, yet her work was always new and personal. From paintings, prints to sculptures, her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and is represented in many private collections. Her illustrations have also appeared in magazines, books, newspapers, and filmstrips.
Karen Laub-Novak was born August 25, 1937 in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of George and Mary (Swenson) Laub of Cresco. She attended Assumption Grade School and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1955. She cherished her small-town roots in Cresco while exploring both the wider world, and the inner world. While earning a BA from Carleton College, Northwood, Minn. in 1959 and an MFA in painting and printmaking from the University of Iowa in 1961, she studied painting with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg, Austria; printmaking with Mauricio Lasansky; and poetry writing at the Iowa writers' workshop.
On June 29, 1963 she married Michael Novak of Johnstown, Penn. in Assumption Church in Cresco.
Laub-Novak has taught art and humanities at Carleton, Stanford, Syracuse, Georgetown, Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C., the University of California-Riverside, Impressions Studio in Boston, and CIDOC in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
She is a Kent-Danforth fellow and has been listed in Outstanding Young Women of America, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in American Art.
She volunteered art and counseling to family members at Walter Reed Army Hospital and the Washington D.C. National Guard.
Karen Laub-Novak is survived by her husband of more than 46 years, author Michael Novak of Washington D.C.; three children: Richard Novak (Lucy) of San Antonio, Texas, Tanya Holton (Randall) of Boston, Mass. and Jana Miller (John) of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren: Emily and Stephen Novak and Wiley and Julia Holten; her sister: Gretchen Laub and her children: Lucy Gehling, Tanya Laub and George Laub); and siblings-in-law: Ben Novak and Mary Ann Novak.
She was preceded in death by her father: George R. Laub on May 30, 1975; her mother: Mary on October 12, 2006; a brother at birth in 1941; and a niece Sarah on April 5, 2001.
August 25, 2009 Funeral services for Ronald D. Trouten of Harmony, Minn. were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Harmony State Line United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Smith officiating. Interment was in State Line Cemetery.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony handled the arrangements.
Ronald, 75, died suddenly on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 after a lengthy illness.
Ronald Dewaine Trouten was born April 21, 1934 the son of Lyle and Lucille (Long) Trouten at the Trouten family farm south of Harmony where he has been living since 1993. Ron went to country school and then graduated from Harmony High School in 1952. After graduation Ron worked for New Holland as a serviceman traveling throughout North and South Dakota.
Ron married Donnis Matson on June 20, 1959. They continued to live in Harmony working with his family at Trouten Implement until 1960 when they joined New Holland and relocated to Phillips, Wis., then Eau Claire, Wis. and finally York, Neb. In 1985, they moved back to Harmony, he was employed at Dick's Standard, Harmony Agri Service and Greenfield Ag before retiring in 2000.
Ron touched many lives and enjoyed visiting the people he met through his work and travels. He was a Charter Member of the Lions Club in Phillips, Wis. and continued to be active with the Lions Organization until he could no longer due to health problems. Ron and Donnis enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family and friends.
Ron is survived by his wife; four children: Don (Louann) Trouten of Moline, Ill., Karen Hanson of Harmony, Cindy (Rex) Pettygrove of McCool Jct., Neb., and R. Jon (Mark) Trouten of Iowa City; eight grandchildren: Mitchel and Matthew Trouten, Dustin and Ryan Hanson, Josh and Nic Pettygrove, and Leslie and D'Angelo Trouten; brother: Robert (Marilyn) Trouten; sister: LaRita (Bill) Bakken; mother-in-law; Doris Matson, sisters-in-law: Estherann (Tom) Jarland and Nancy (Ron) Scrabeck; brother-in-law: Jack (Toni) Matson; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Preceding Ron in death were his parents; father-in-law: Donald Matson; son-in-law: Roger J. Hanson; and a niece.
August 25, 2009 Funeral services for Bernice L. Minear of Cresco will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Rev. Richard Ament officiating. The children will place the pall at the beginning of the service. The gifts will be carried by Kelly and Morgan Minear, the lectors are Jeffrey Minear and Janette Domayer and the eucharist ministers are Jeff and Joan Minear. The Good News Singers will sing. Pallbearers are the Minear grandchildren: Brian, Brandon and Garrett Minear and Bill Borchard. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25 at the Conway Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Conway Funeral Home in Cresco is handling the arrangements.
Bernice, 81, died Saturday, August 22, 2009, at her home in rural Cresco.
Bernice Leone Minear was born October 11, 1927 in Howard County the daughter of Leon and Ida (Queel) Davis of Cresco. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1945. She taught rural school after graduation.
On December 26, 1945 she married Irvin Minear. They were married for 61 years. They farmed in Howard County, settling on a farm southwest of Cresco.
Besides working on the farm and raising nine children, she was active in many endeavors. These included being a 4-H leader, gardening, singing in the Farm Bureau Women's Chorus, playing the piano for family, heading up projects for Assumption and Notre Dame schools such as prom dinners, work for Fair Days, etc. Until recently she was a morning swimmer at the Cresco Fitness Center. Her service to Assumption Church and later Notre Dame parish included working with the Altar and Rosary Society, position as one of the church organists, working on sewing and quilting projects for missions, and singing in the church choir.
She and Irvin completed classes for the Lay Ministry Program through the Archdiocese of Dubuque and subsequently served the parishioners. She chose to do ministry for residents of the Cresco Care Center and had many people she visited there regularly. She and Irvin liked to travel after retirement and went on several trips in the United States and Europe over the years.
She is survived by her children: Linda (David) Slavik of Las Vegas, Nev., Paul (Beth Riley) of Westminster, Calif., Jannette (Donald) Domayer of Sioux City, Rebecca Rice of Portland, Ore., MaryEllen Miller of Des Moines, Christine Minear of Reno, Nev., Joel (Angela) of North Liberty, Peter (Johnna) of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., and Jeffrey (Joan) of Calmar; 21 grandchildren: Loretta, Daniel, Derek, Darin and Lucinda Slavik, Emily Domayer, Hansel Harshfield and Rachel Borsch, Sarah and William Borchard, Lisa Opfer and Marey Schiotis, Jennifer and Keyaunna Minear, Sierra and Jaime Minear, Brandon, Brian, Garrett, Kelly and Morgan Minear; eight great-grandchildren: Nicolle and Kellie Johnson, Jacob Slavik, Nathan Borchard, Alana Gaul, Samuel and Drake Opfer, and Emmanuel James; one sister: Evelyn (Wilbert) Mohlis of Spring Valley, Minn.; and one brother: Marvin Davis of Cresco.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin on March 6, 2007; her parents; one sister: Ellen Quandt; two grandchildren: SSG Sean Gaul K.I.A. and Cheyenne Minear; and one great-grandson: Ian Gaul.
