Helen Sorensen, 83

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Helen S. Sorensen of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Waterloo, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Waterloo with Rev. Jose Luis Comparan officiating. Lector was Debi Digmann, organist was John Crouse and vocalists were the Resurrection Choir. Gift bearers were Frank and Mary McConnell. Pallbearers were: Scott Sorensen, Nate Vander Broek, Joe Kruchek and Steve Samec. Entombment was in Mt. Olivet Mausoleum in Waterloo.
    Visitation was held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18 at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there was a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7:00 p.m. vigil. Visitation was also one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.
    Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway in Waterloo handled the arrangements.
    Helen, 83, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Luther Manor in Dubuque.
    Helen S. Sorensen was born February 16, 1926, in Ridgeway, IA the daughter of Frank J. and Alice A. (Kellner) Samec. She graduated from Ridgeway High School.
    On June 28, 1948, she married Clarence Sorensen in Waterloo. He died December 17, 1997.
    She was employed in Chicago before moving to Waterloo where she worked in clerical at Rath for five years and then was a waitress for 40 years, retiring in 1988.
    Survivors include one son: James (Linda) Sorensen of Dubuque; one daughter: Sue (Rod) Hilton of Scottsdale, AZ; three grandchildren: Scott Sorensen, Karen (Nate) Vander Broek and Dixie Hilton; two brothers: Frank (Marion) Samec of Cedar Rapids and Arthur (Donna) Samec of Jesup; and two sisters: Arlene (Jerry) Kruchek of Protivin and Mary (Frank) McConnell of Cresco.
    Helen was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother: Edward Samec.
   


Kathryn Reicks, 77

    A memorial service for Kathryn "Katy" Reicks of Cresco, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.
    Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco.
    Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
    Katy, 77, died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family.
    Katy was born on July 28, 1931, in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of Alvin and Ilene (LaMaster) Christianson.
    Katy married Denis D. Reicks on September 18, 1951. Katy and Denny raised nine children in Cresco. Katy was very proud of her children, and was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 19 step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. 
    Katy enjoyed working on the farm, cooking, and taking care of her garden and flowers. She had one of the nicest gardens around. Katy was on a bowling league for 10 years. Katy was an avid wrestling fan when her sons and grandsons were on the mat. Katy put everyone first and made sure all the children were taken care of.
    Katy is survived by her husband: Denny; their children: Sandy (Bernie) Mathews of New Hampton, Bill Reicks of Bremerton, WA, Sharon Reicks, daughter-in-law, (her friend, Bob Cox) of Alta Vista, Pat (Mark) Ahern of Cresco, Barb (Dave) Schmauss of Eagle Grove, Dave Reicks (his friend, Faye Kozelka) of Decorah, Lori (Dave) Goodell of Williamsburg, Al (Deb) Reicks of Monona, and Dean (Donna) Reicks of Cresco; as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister: Phyllis Carter of Cedar Falls; her brother: Ronnie Christianson of Denver, CO; and many nieces and nephews.
    Katy was preceded in death by her parents: Alvin and Ilene (LaMaster) Christianson; her son: Mike in 1993; and daughter-in-law: Sandy Reicks in 2006.


William Kapler, 67

    A memorial service for William "Bill" G. Kapler will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Valley View Wesleyan Church in West Union, IA. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. 
    William, 67, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center Hospice in West Union. He had been living with health problems for some time.
    William Gregory Kapler was born September 23, 1941, in Cresco, IA, the son of Gregory and Helen Kapler. He graduated from the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School at Vinton, IA, along with his twin brother, Bob, in 1959. He received a scholarship and was one of 30 Americans selected to attend a special language project at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. from 1962-1964. He graduated with a BA degree in Education in 1970 from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, IA, and a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1972 from The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. He worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor in North Dakota, Iowa and Ohio, and was also involved with pastoral fellowship in Kansas. 
    On June 27, 1971, he married Sheila Anderson at West Union, and they were blessed with two children. They later divorced, but maintained a close relationship.
    He enjoyed playing the piano for the elderly, keeping in touch with family and friends, and was involved in many civic activities as his health allowed.
    William is survived by his daughter: Christi-An (John) Miceli; a son: Christian (Tanya); five grandchildren; two sisters; and four brothers.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister.

Michael Borlaug, 43

    Memorial services for Michael "Mike" A. Borlaug of Rochester, MN were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Lawler, IA. Interment was in Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.
    Visitation was held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31 at the church and one hour before the service at the church.

    Mike, 43, died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at his home in Rochester.
    Michael A. Borlaug was born May 24, 1966 the son of Allen D. and Wanda (Knutson) Borlaug in Decorah, IA. He was raised in rural Lawler and graduated from New Hampton High School. He attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City for four years. Mike worked for Dominos Pizza in New Mexico, Hawaii, Wisconsin, and Minnesota for over 20 years. He also worked for Menards in Rochester. He enjoyed sports.
    Mike is survived by his father Allen and LuAnn Borlaug of Lawler; a brother: Marc (Julie) Borlaug of Flint, MI; two sisters: Michelle Anderson of Bloomington, IN, and Alyssa Borlaug of Rochester, MN; two step brothers: David (Sarah) Magner of Decorah, IA and Michael (Kate) Magner of Denver, CO; and his maternal grandparents: G.H. (Bud) and Vera Knutson of Fredericksburg, IA.
    He was preceded in death by his mother: Wanda Knutson; and his paternal grandparents.

Frank Hudecek, 68

    Frank W. Hudecek, 68, of Kissimmee, FL died Friday, May 8, 2009 at his home. A memorial service was held in Kissimmee.
    He was born August 4, 1940 in Cresco the son of John and Mary (Pokornik) Hudecek. He graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, IA in 1959. He served in the Army in Korea.
    He is survived by his wife: Kat; five children; his mother: Mary Hudecek of Cresco; and three brothers: John of Columbus, IN, Martin of Cresco, and Jerry of Mason City.
 

Louis Balik, 76

    Funeral services for Louis J. Balik of Cresco, IA were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2009 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, IA. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
    Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. There was a Prayer Service at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

    Louis, 76, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
    Louis Joseph Balik was born November 14, 1932, in Spillville, IA, the son of Louis S. and Helen (Puffer) Balik. He received his education at St. Wenceslaus School in Spillville. Following his education, he stayed on the farm and helped his dad and brothers with the farming.
    On November 3, 1954, Louis married Betty Hruska at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, IA. Following his marriage, Louis and Betty farmed, for a short time on the Balik farm, then on a farm northwest of Protivin finally moving to the Cresco area. He first belonged to Holy Trinity Church and in 1960 became a member of the Notre Dame Parish.
    He enjoyed listening to polka music, was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and enjoyed doing word search puzzles and playing solitaire.
    He is survived by his wife Betty of Cresco; his children: Tom of Clark Fork, ID; Diane (Dan) Klimesh of Ridgeway; Linus (Lori) Balik of Cresco; Nadine (Bobby) Lucero of The Colony, TX; Harvey (Betsy) Balik of The Colony, TX; Danny (Susan) of Hawthorne, NJ; Patti (Brian) Munkel of Cresco; Daryl (Sherrie) Balik of Cresco; Luann (Joe) Pisney of Lime Springs; Sheila (Tim) Grabau of Lime Springs; and Todd Balik of Cresco; 27 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters: Anna Mae Weist of Richardson, TX; Lorraine (Fritz) Bily of Omaha, NE; and Emilie (Ervin) Moudry of Spillville; and one brother: "Jim" W.F. (Mary Jean) Balik of Waterloo.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren: Joshua Lucero and Zachary Pisney; great-granddaughter: Mallory Klimesh; two sisters: Elizabeth in infancy and Genevieve Pesek; and two brothers: George and Edward.


Aloys Recker, 99

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Aloys "Al" A. Recker of Alta Vista, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista, IA with Father Ray E. Atwood officiating. Pallbearers were: Joe Zweibohmer, Marvel Erion, Melvin Masemann, Brian Recker, Cletus Bullerman, and Denis Schwickerath. Honorary pallbearers were the Catholic Order of Foresters. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista.
    Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 19 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary at 4:30 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the funeral home in Elma.
    Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.
    Aloys, 99, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the Colonial Manor in Elma, IA.
    Aloys Andrew Recker was born September 2, 1909 the son of Clem and Ida (Willenborg) Recker in Worthington, IA. In April of 1910 his family moved east of Alta Vista where he was raised. He attended St. Williams School in Alta Vista. After his schooling he farmed northeast of Alta Vista.
    On June 7, 1938, he married Madonna Felder at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista and just recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary with family members. After their marriage the couple continued farming northeast of Alta Vista. After Al's retirement in 1980, they moved to Alta Vista. He continued to be involved in the farming operation all of his life.
    Al was a walking history book and loved to talk to anyone interested in the past. His ability to recall names, places, events, and dates marveled those who were talking to him. Neighbors loved to ride along with Al in his signature black 54 Chevy pickup and listen to him tell stories about the people who live in the Alta Vista area.
    He enjoyed traveling, especially to Las Vegas to see the entertainment. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
    Al is survived by his wife Madonna; four daughters: Pat Recker of Kansas City, MO, Mary Jean (Cash) O'Rourke of Severna Park, MD, Rose Marie (Helmut) Bonigut of Paso Robles, CA, and Maggie Rivers of New Holstein, WI; one son: Don (Lois) Recker of Mankato, MN; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three brothers: Ed Recker, Leonard Recker, and Joe (Margaret) Recker, all of Alta Vista.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Rosie Northeness and Clara O'Neill; and three brothers: Art Recker, Herbert Recker and Elmer Recker at age one and one-half from the flu.


Roger Mason, 90

    Funeral services for Roger Mason of Lime Springs, IA will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
    Friends may call on Sunday, June 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA and also one hour prior to services at the church.

    Roger, 90, died Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, IA.
    Shortly after his birth in Black Hawk County on May 6, 1919, he was orphaned and placed with the Annie Whitmeyer Home in Davenport. At age 12, he began living with farm families in Howard County where he worked until age 17 when he joined the U.S. Navy. Roger served in the Navy from 1938 to 1948. Prior to and during World War II, he served on the heavy cruiser USS Louisville (CA-28) which was involved in numerous campaigns in the South Pacific. Later he was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Lime Springs for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984.
    Roger is survived by his son: David Sr. (Cindi) of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren: Amanda Vittetoe of Chino Hills, CA; David Jr. (Stacy) of Cedar Falls; Joseph (Jane) of Plainfield, IL; Hillary of Washington, D.C. and John of Cedar Falls; and three great-grandchildren: Sam, Sadie and Molly.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois I. Mason.

Joseph Goss, 88

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph J. Goss of Lawler, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, IA. Interment with military honors was in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Cemetery in Lawler.
    Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there was a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continued for an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Friday.

Mary Hosek, 88

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary G. Hosek of Lime Springs, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, IA with Rev. Richard J. Ament officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
    Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church. There was a Scripture Service at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

    Mary, 88, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at her home after a sudden illness.
     Mary Grace Hosek was born May 30, 1921 in Howard Twsp, Howard County near Elma, Iowa, the daughter of Francis E. and Beatrice A. (Polansky) Lipa. She attended school at Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School through the eighth grade. Following her education, she returned home to help her family with the farm chores. 
    On June 9, 1941, she married Vincent C. Hosek in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at Lourdes, Iowa. Vince and Mary started farming near Schley and in 1953, moved to their present farm west of Cresco. They belonged to Holy Cross Church in Schley and then joined the Assumption Church in Cresco. Mary loved her family, and took great pride in baking rolickys and kolaches for family  gatherings. In earlier years, Vince and Mary loved to dance, especially to old time music and on Sunday afternoons, they enjoyed fishing on Crane Creek. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and raised chickens and ducks.
    She is survived by her two sons: Gene (Diana) of Lime Springs, and Don (fiance Diane Rinkert) of Cumming, IA; five grandchildren: Connie (Robert) Hackenmiller, Robert (Deanne) Hosek, and Julie (David) Wilkes; Kimberly (Steven) Blakesley and Donald (Richelle) Hosek Jr.; three step grandchildren: Angela (Dwayne) Tiegs, Scott Rivers, and Lisa (Michael) Kreger; eleven great-grandchildren: Andrew, Amanda, Stacy and Ryan Hackenmiller; Kayla and Lucas Hosek; Megan, Miranda, and Ethan Wilkes; Mykel and Shawn Hosek; nine step great-grandchildren: Elizabeth and    Jordan Sickels, Tyler and Dylan Rivers, Mikaela, Christian and Olivia Kreger, Adrian Ross and Gage Buechler; one great-great-grandchild: Addison Hosek; one brother: Clarence (Phyllis) Lipa of Elma; three sisters: Cecelia (Ray) Praska of Cresco, Agnes (Ed) Novak of Elma and Anna May (Ray) Maravetz of Riceville.
    She was preceded in death by her husband Vince on December 24, 2005; her parents; and daughter-in-law: Judy Hosek.

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Michael J. Throndson of New Hampton, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton.

Otila Woldan, 91

    Funeral services for Otila "Tillie" R. Woldan of Cresco, IA were held at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco with Rev. Richard J. Ament officiating. The lectors were Nancy Zumski, Nicole Cummings and Charlene Stasko. The gifts were presented to the altar by the great-grandchildren. The Eucharist Minister was Alma Klute. Marilyn Novak accompanied Pam Daley and Cathy Hoffert played guitar and sang a solo. Pallbearers were Brian Klute, Dennis Klute, John Lowe, Wayne Lowe, Christopher Stasko and Joseph Busta. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
    Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 26 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. There was a 7 p.m. Scripture Service on Friday.

    Tillie, 91, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.
    Otila Rose Woldan was born September 13, 1917, the daughter of Charles and Rose (Kovar) Busta in Fort Atkinson, IA. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. She grew up on a farm near Fort Atkinson, IA, where she received her formal education in rural public school and St. John Nepomucene Catholic School in Fort Atkinson, IA.
    On October 11, 1937, she married Frank Woldan at the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. Following their marriage they resided on the family farm near Ridgeway, IA where they raised their four children. Tillie attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spilllville, IA, for many years where she was very active and a chairman in the Ladies Group.
    After moving in 1975 to their retirement home in Cresco, Tillie worked part-time at the Cresco Motel for eight years. She was a member of the Notre Dame Catholic Church until her death. Some of her favorite past times included gardening, baking kolaches, embroidering, watching TV, and listening to old time music.
    Due to her declining health, Tillie entered the Howard Residential Care Facility on November 3, 1995 and on June 8, 2001 she entered the Patty Elwood Center where she resided until her death.
    She is survived by three daughters: Charlene Stasko of McHenry, IL, Imogene (Wayne) Lowe of Waterloo, IA, and Alma (Dennis) Klute of Milford, IA; one son: Frank (Becky) Woldan of Dysart, IA; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother: Godlove Busta of Ft. Atkinson, IA; one sister: Clara Kuhn of Ft. Atkinson, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, two sons-in-law: Ronald Stasko and Marion Lundby; one brother: Charles Busta; and one sister: Emma Schmitt.


Bernard Kerian, 72

    A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernard "Bernie" Kerian of Waverly, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at St. Mary's Church in Waverly, IA with Father Mike Tauke officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Waverly.
    Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 29 at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly where there was a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Friends were also invited to call an hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

    Bernard, 72, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
    Bernie was born March 7, 1937 in Howard County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Bernie attended Holy Trinity Catholic grade school and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in 1956. Following his education, he enlisted in the Army, serving his basic training in Fort Hood, Texas and discharged at Fort Belvior, Virginia proving grounds as a Private 1st Class. 
    On January 5, 1959, he married Geraldine Martinek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, IA. Bernie worked as a meatpacker in a butcher shop, worked for an automobile parts factory on the production line, did farm work in the summer in the Protivin area, and then began working in the tool and die business at several shops. In 1983, he was a founding owner of North East Machine and Tool, until retiring in 1998. 
    He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly; Knights of Columbus and the Waverly Country Club. Bernie enjoyed coaching little league, gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling, golfing and watching his grandchildren's sporting events. He also enjoyed volunteering his time and talents, helping others both around Waverly and in their winter home in Dade City, FL. 
    Survivors are his wife, Geraldine Kerian of Waverly; son: Steve (Tina) Kerian of McCook Lake, SD; three daughters: Ann (Curt) Teeter of Charles City, IA, Sarah (Bernie) Benavidez of Rochester, MN and Heidi (Craig) Knaak of Liberty, MO; 10 grandchildren: Jeffrey, David, and Matthew Kerian, Amanda, J.D. and Brian Lund, Katelyn and Colton Benavidez and Kerian and Karl Knaak; two great-grandchildren, Paisley and Leah; sister: Dorothy Praska of Cresco; two brothers: Richard Kerian of Las Vegas, NV and Jerry Kerian (Maureen) of Winters, CA. 
    He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son and daughter; three brothers: Stanley, Joseph and Daniel Kerian; and a sister: Marcella in infancy.


Alice Frana, 87

    Funeral services for Alice D. Frana of Cresco, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. The lector was LaVonne Prochaska. The gifts were brought to the altar by Alice's granddaughters. Deb Moellers accompanied song leader, Katie Ferrie. The honorary pallbearer was Jamie Prochaska. The pallbearers were: Bert Lane, Demitrius Frana, Raymond Frana, Eric Frana, Chad Frana, Greg Frana, Adam Guthrie and Ivan Guthrie.  Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
    Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. There was a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 6 p.m. Prayer Service on Sunday.
    Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
    Alice, 87, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
    Alice Dorothy Frana was born November 11, 1921 the daughter of Theodore and Mary Ann (VonDerSitt) Uhlenhake.
    On November 18, 1940 she married Raymond Frana. Ray and Alice had six children:  LaVonne, Jane, Ron, Tom, Rebecca and Ted.
    She enjoyed cooking, baking, card playing, traveling and spending time with her family. She was a member of Notre Dame Parish, Circles of Faith, Catholic Workman Society, Ridgeway Birthday Club, The Legion of Mary Auxiliary and Decorah Hospital Club.
    She is survived by her children: LaVonne (Jim) Prochaska of Milan, IL, Jane Lane of Clifton, VA, Ron (Carol) Frana of Lawler, IA, Tom (Connie) Frana of Ridgeway, IA, Rebecca  (Brian) Guthrie of Coal Valley, IL, and Ted (Cindy) Frana of Ridgeway, IA; 19 grandchildren: Jamie Prochaska, Frana (Jack) Beciri; Bert (Nancy) Lane, Allison (Taylor) Grant; Demitrius (Kate) Frana, Raymond Frana, Eric Frana, Chad (Molly) Frana; Amber (Jim) Earles, Greg (Sheena) Frana, Emily Frana; Alison Johnson, Adam Guthrie, Ivan (Eliza) Guthrie, Olivia (Josh) Quillin, Elaine Guthrie; Stephanie, Sarah and Rachel Frana; 15 great-grandchildren: Dylan and Camden Lane, Elizabeth Grant; Elizabeth and Joshua Frana, Wyatt Frana, Kurt Drube, Jake, Lane and Samantha Frana; Sienna, Connor and Penny Earles, Cloe Burke; and Ethan Johnson; her sisters: Dolores Uhlenhake Simmons of Cedar Falls, IA, Lou Ellen (Dale) Chase and Marilyn (Sergio) Fuggitt, both of Waterloo IA.
    Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond on October 16, 1990; her parents; two grandchildren: James Prochaska and Jason Prochaska; her siblings: Maurant Uhlenhake, Mary Uhlenhake, Clarence Uhlenhake, Lucille Uhlenhake White, Adeline Verla Uhlenhake Adams, and Merlin Uhlenhake.
 


Irvin McCarville, 81

    A Mass of the Resurrection for Irvin "Irv" McCarville of Marion, IA were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009 at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, IA. Interment with military honors by Marion American Legion Post No. 298 was in Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
    Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids with a wake service at 7 p.m.
    Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids handled the arrangements.
    Irvin, 81, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at his home following a courageous battle with Lymphoma.
    Irvin McCarville was born December 27, 1927 on the family farm near Cresco, and graduated from Cresco High School in 1945.
    On November 9, 1957, he married Marian Frommelt at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.
    Irv worked for Pepsi Cola Bottling Company as office manager for over 30 years. Since his retirement, he was involved in many volunteer activities. He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church, served as an usher, was a member of the Holy Name Society, and Marion American Legion Post 298. Irv was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
    Irv is survived by his wife, Marian; son: Steven (Susan) of Omaha, NE; daughter: Diane (Irwin) Morris of Marion; six grandchildren: Patrick, Michael, Maureen, and Kevin of Omaha; Marie (Justin) Billings and Matt Gilbertson of Marion; three step-grandchildren; two brothers: Harold (Dorothy) of Des Moines and Charley (Ardith) of Brownsboro, TX.; a sister-in-law: Sherry McCarville of Viola; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Raphael and Hazel Eldridge McCarville; a brother: Gerry; and aunt Madge Eldridge.
 


Norma Thompson, 83

June 30, 2009
    Norma June (Mork) Thompson, 83, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at MacKenzie Place Retirement Center in Fort Collins, CO. A graveside service will take place later this summer at the Thompson Cemetery in Owatonna, MN.
    Norma was a long time resident of Cresco.

Dennis Safranek, 59

    Dennis G. "Bird Dog" Safranek, 59, of Anchorage, AK died Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Providence Medical Center, Anchorage, after a brief illness. His body was donated to cancer research. There were no services. An ash scattering will be held on July 4th presided by his immediate family.
    Survivors include his two sons: Darren and Damon (Yetive); and granddaughter: Gwyneth, of Tucson, AZ; his mother: Jean Safranek of Puyallup, WA, formerly of Cedar Rapids; and his brothers: John (Nancy) of Puyallup, WA, and Michael of Chicago.
    He was preceded in death by his father: John O. Safranek; and an infant sister.
    He was born in Cedar Rapids and lived in Cresco. He was a 1967 graduate of Crestwood High School and was employed as an optician in Davenport, IA, Anchorage and Prescott, AZ. He was employed for over 25 years as a bush pilot in Alaska, most recently with Iliamna Air Taxi, Inc.

Opal Payton, 84

    Funeral services for Opal N. Payton of Cresco, IA, formerly of rural route Lime Springs, IA were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Cresco United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, IA.
    Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
    Opal, 84, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
    Opal N. Payton was born November 7, 1924 in Story City, Iowa the daughter of Ole P. and Nettie K. (Hanson) Frette. She graduated from the Radcliffe High School, Radcliffe, Iowa in 1942. She taught country school for 2 and one-half years after graduation from high school.
    On April 10, 1945 she married Richard D. Payton at the Rose Grove Lutheran Church, Williams, Iowa. They farmed in the Blairsburg and Ogden areas before moving to Northeast Iowa in March, 1956. Opal was a farm wife until she worked part-time at the Farm Bureau Office, Cresco and then as a full-time secretary for Production Credit Association (PCA) for 15 years retiring in December, 1980.
    Opal was a 4-H leader; a member of the Stop & Go Club and 20th Century Club. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
    Survivors include her husband, Richard D. "Dick" Payton; their children: Norma Jean (Eugene) Pecinovsky of Cambridge, IA and Janice (Dean) Hauge of Mason City, IA; grandchildren: Scott (Chelly) Pecinovsky; Shannon (Mandi) Pecinovsky; Kimberly (Darrin) White; and Kelly (Brandon) Lane; great-grandchildren: Ashlynn and Mallary Pecinovsky; Cadin, Danica and Lilli Pecinovsky; Caleb White and Carter Lane; sister: Helen Norem of Ames, IA; sister-in-law: Alveda Payton of Thornton, IA; brother-in-law: Robert (Carol) Payton of Liberty, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents: Ole P. and Nettie K. Frette; her in-laws: Daniel and Dorothy Payton; brother: Francis Frette; sister: Arlene West; half-brothers: Elmer Frette, Arthur Frette and Percy Frette; and half-sisters: Agnes Alvestad and Ethel Olson.
