Isabelle C. Hagen

Isabelle C. Hagen of Fort Collins died Monday, July 22, 1996. Isabelle graduated from Cresco in 1924. After graduation from high school, she became a salesperson in a ladies ready-to-wear store in Cresco until her marriage in 1928. Isabelle and her husband, Lloyd, came to Fort Collins in July of 1928 where Lloyd resumed his position with the then Express-Courier. In Fort Collins, Isabelle was active in many clubs and church activities.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, of Fort Collins; one son, Hanns H. Hagen of Kansas City, MO; one daughter, Dr. Sonja S. Glassmeyer of San Luis Obispo and Lockwood, CA; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Orson Stanfield of Clearlake, CA, and Mrs. Marion Walker of Cresco. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.


John H. Murray

Funeral services for John H. Murray were held in Phoenix, AZ, July 15, and again on July 17 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment and military rites were held in the Calvary Cemetery at Cresco. The Rev. Dennis Cahhil officiated. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John, 67, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Cresco, died Saturday, July 13, 1996, in Phoenix after a lengthy illness.

John was born September 8, 1928, in Cresco, the son of Ray and Margaret (Coughlin) Murray. He attended St. Joseph's Elementary School and Cresco High School. He graduated from Winona State College in Winona, MN, and received his Masters Degree from Colorado State in Greeley, CO.

After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he taught in Clarion.

After his marriage in 1964 to Marilee Payne of Des Moines, the couple moved to Phoenix, AZ, where he taught high school in Phoenix until his retirement in 1989.

John is survived by: his wife, Marilee; son, John E. of Phoenix; two sisters, Elizabeth Nixa of Mason City and Margaret Law of Ankeny; and two brothers, Ray of Cresco and Henry of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Edward, Thomas and Robert.


Dora P. Fravel

Funeral services for Dora P. Fravel were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Curch in Cresco with the Rev. Frank Fagerburg officiating. Interment was in the New Oregon Cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco was in charge of arrangements.

Dora, 93, of Cresco died at the Harmony Community Nursing Home on Friday, July 19, 1996.

Dora was born July 28, 1902, at Decorah, the daughter of Clem and Julia Pilgrim. She married Glenn E. Fravel on April 4, 1925, at Decorah and they farmed near Cresco for many years.

After the death of her husband, Dora continued to live on the farm with her daugher and son-in-law.

She is survived by her four sons: Charles of Preston, MN, Ellis of Cresco, Robert of Lime Springs and Paul of Booneville; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and seven great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, in 1957; one daughter, Lucille Curtis; and two grandchildren.

  Helen Hewitt, 76, of Northfield, MN, were held Tuesday, July 9 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Northfield. Bishop Paul Dudley officiated. Interment was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery with full military rites.

Helen was born September 22, 1919, to William and margaret (Morschhauser) Coughlin on a farm west of Vernon Springs. She attended rural school and graduated from Assumption High School.

She attended Clarke College in Dubuque for a time before joining the Women's Army Corps in 1943. Helen trained at Fort Des Moines and Camp Breckenridge, KY, before overseas duty in Europe, being stationed in London, Paris and Frankfurt. While in France, she was assigned to General Eisenhower's staff.

Following the war she returned to Cresco and on September 6, 1947, she married John G. Hewitt at Assumption Church. They made their home in Dubuque and Clinton, moving to Northfield to manage of Off Campus Cafe from 1953 to 1964.

Helen worked for Merrill Lynch Investment and late for Sheldahl Corp. until retirement in 1986.

Helen is survived by a son, William, of Oakdale, MN; two grandchildren; and a sister, Susan Herold, of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; and brothers Daniel, Edward and William; and twin brothers and a sister in infancy.


Hilda Mahan Wardell

Hilda Mahan Wardell of Oelwein, formerly of Lime Springs, died of heart failure on Wednesday, July 3, 1996, in Nisswa, MN.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 8 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester with Rev. Michael Fitzgerald presiding. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hilda was born February 2, 1916, in Foreston township, Howard County, the daughter of Victorena (Herpelinck) and Peter Herzelle. While growing up she lived at various farms around the Greenleafton and Foreston area and later moved to a farm near Bonair.

After graduating from Assumption High School in Cresco in 1933, she met Thomas N. Mahan of Williamsburg, IA, who was a member of the CCC Camp stationed near Cresco. They were married at Assumption Church on August 16, 1934.

The couple farmed for a few years in the Bonair area and then moved to LIme Springs, where over the years they owned and operated several businesses, including Mahan's Portable Milling, Mahan's Plumbing & Heating, and the Coffee Cup Cafe.

Thomas died in 1985, in in 1993 Hilda married Howard Wardell of Oelwein.

Hilda is survived by her husband, Howard; five daughters: mary Ostby of Chatfield, MN, Marlys Barker of WInona, MN, Margaret Hoover of Rochester, MN, Madonna "Donna" Casey of Pleasanton, CA, and Marcia Soland of Kasson, MN; step-children: Kay Long of Ann Arbor, MI, Karen Austad of Middleton, WI, and Mark Wardell of St. College, PA; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Clarence Harzeelle of New Hampton.

Hilda was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas, three brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter.


Louis J. Kolbert

Louis J. Kolbet, 72, of Alta Vista, died of natural causes in his home on Saturday, July 6, 1996.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 9 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiating. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Alta Vista. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Louis was born March 21, 1924 in Alta Vista, son of John and Caroline (Glaser) Kolbet. He was a graduate of St. Williams High School.

On April 14, 1956, Louis married Donna M. Rex at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. After their marriage, they moved to Alta Vista, where he was employed for 20 years by Sinnwell Elevator and later the Alta Vista Feed and Grain. He worked for several years at Farmers Lumber in Alta Vista until retiring. Louis was a member of St. Bernard's Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and had been a member of the Alta Vista Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; five daughters: Susanna Gibson of Salt Lake City, UT, Janet Hennigar of Charles City, Wanda Folkers and Carmela Slick, both of Alta Vista, and Sheila Moritz of Osage; one son, Alan Kolbet of ALta Vista; 12 grandchildren, two step-great-granddaughters; three brothers: Leonard of Rockford, Luvern of Charles City, and Leo of Elma; and three sisters: Luella Phippen of Alta Vista, Lois McAvoy of Elma, and Lola Boss of Camanche.

Bernadine (Ferrie) Dieky

Bernadine Lucille (Ferrie) Dieky died at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein on July 2, 1996, after a lingering illness.

A Mass of Resurrection was held Friday, July 5at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Fr. James Goedken presiding. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein. Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bernadine was born November 10, 1915 in rural Cresco to Bernard and Lucy (Molone) Ferrie. She graduated from Assumption High School in Cresco in 1933 and was a nurse's aide in Oelwein's Mercy Hospital for 10 years before her marriage. She was united in marriage to Archie Dieky in November 1950.

Bernadine was a member of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church in Oelwein.

She is survived by her son Robert, of Urbandale; one granddaugter; one great-granddaughter; and her sister, Viola Ferrie, of Cresco.

Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband, Archie; her parents; brothers Durand, Virgil, Francis and Hugh; and sisters Marie O'Donnell and Sister Mary Celestine.


Angela M. (Leferink) Meyer

Angela M. (Leferink) Meyer, 76, of Cedar Rapids died Sunday, July 7, 1996, in her home after a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held today (July 10) at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Harry Koelker presiding. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Teahen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Angela was born May 31, 1920, in Cresco. She married Harold Meyer on August 13, 1960, in Minneapolis, MN. Angela worked for over 20 years at Cryovac. She was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include her son, Bernard, of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren.

Preceding Angela in death was her husband, Harold.


Madelyn Drilling

Madelyn Drilling was born February 24, 1938, in Cresco. She gave her life to helping others and showed her dedication by continuing to work throughout her illness as an Early Family/Childhood Educator in the Columbia Heights School District.

Madelyn Drilling services held July 24

Madelyn (Henry) Drilling, age 58, of Golden Valley, MN, died Sunday, July 21, 1996, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A funeral mass was held Thursday, July 25 at St. Agnes Catholic Church at Plymouth Rock. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday, July 24, at Conway Funeral Home in Cresco.

Madelyn is survived by her husband, Vern; son John Drilling of Golden Valley, MN; brothers Harlan Henry of Bluffton, and Mike Henry of Rochester; MN; and sisters Mary Frank of Fullerton, CA, Martha Wendl of Newton, and Joneil Henry of Bellevue, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Larry and Madelyn Henry.


Isabelle C. Hagen

Isabelle C. Hagen of Fort Collins died Monday, July 22, 1996. Isabelle graduated from Cresco in 1924. After graduation from high school she became a salesperson in a ladies ready-to-wear store in Cresco until her marriage in 1928.

Stanley Munkel

Funeral services held July 27 for Stanley Munkel, 80, of Lime Springs, who died of natural causes at his home on July 23, 1996. Services were held Saturday, July 27 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester, IA, with interment in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Military services were provided by the Cresco VFW and Lime Springs American Legion posts. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

tanley was born September 24, 1915, the son of Walter and Helen (Valenta) Munkel. On February 2, 1935, he married Norma Halweg in Cresco. They lived in Lime Springs and Stanley's life's work was as a carpenter. He also served in World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; a daughter, Shirley Miller of Gillette, WY; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and four brother, Irvin, Harold and Eugene, all of Lime Springs, and Lawrence of Decorah.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Donald, and one great-grandchild.


Edna Gerber

Services for Edna Gerber, 78, to be held. Edna E. Gerber, 78, of Stewartville, MN, died at the Stewartville Care Center on July 25, 1996. Interment will be in New Oregon Cemetery in Cresco with memorial services to be held at a later date. Lindstrom Funeral Home of Cresco is in charge of arrangements.

Edna was born September 5, 1917, in Howard County, the daughter of John and Mary Gerber. In 1927 the family moved to Stewartville and Edna lived there with her parents until 1971 when she entered the Stewartville Nursing Home.

Edna is survived by her brother, Walter Gerber of Aurora, CO, and a sister, Burnetta Swygman of Stewartville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Alice Peter.


Charlotte Theis

Charlotte Theis, 97, of Riceville, died Thursday, July 25, 1996, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27 at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with the Rev. John Gilbert officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Charlotte was born May 14, 1899, in Riceville, the daughter of Nelson and Amy Sprung Crum. She married Leonard Theis on Jan 11, 1936, at St. Peter's Rectory in New Haven, IA. She was a retired teacher and a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Robert Theis of Riceville; one daughter, Joan Theis of Riceville; six grandchildren; five great0grandchildren; and one sister, Violet Melugin, of Payson, AZ.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard, in 1969; and one brother, Leland Crum.; six grandchildren; five great-greatchildren.


Gladys Ihns Terbeest

Services held for Gladys Ihns Terbeest, age 63, of Chester, died at her home on July 26, 1996. Funeral services were held Monday, July 29, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs with interment in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, also in Lime Springs. The Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiated and Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gladys was born May 9, 1933, in Lime Springs, the daughter of Arnold, Sr. and Minnie (Michaelson) Ihns. She worked at the Rochester Health Care Center in Rochester, MN, for 28 years as a certified nurse's aide.

She is survived by her son, Larry Ihns of LeRoy, Mn; two grandchildren; two brothers: Arnold Ihns, Jr., of Cresco and Delbert Ihns of Lime Springs; and two sisters: Hazel Bronner of Cresco and Louise McCuniff of Waterloo.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Terbeest, and a half-brother, Francis Ihns.


William Jarosh

William Jarosh, age 75, or Camden, NC, died Tuesday, June 25, 1996, in Albermarle Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted in Triford's Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City, NC on June 28 with Pastor Larry Holland officiating. Interment followed in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors by VFW Post 6060.

Vitalias was a native of Elma, IA, graduating from Elma Public School in 1939. He was a retired truck driver, a member of Faith Baptist Church, the Tar Heel Squares and the Clarence Jackson Post #6060 of the VFW. He was also a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Jarosh is survived by a daughter, Karen Lynn Brandt, of Camden, NC; one brother, LaVern Jarosh of Saratoga, IA; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Claire Beimbrink Jarosh; parents William and Louise Slifka Jarosh; and one brother, Virgil, of Yuba City, CA.
