Elsie L. Miller

Funeral services for Elsie L. Miller, age 75, were held Monday, August 12 at Garden View Chapel in Waterloo. Rev. Ryan Shea, pastor of Linden United Methodist Church, officiated. Interment was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The Kearns Service of Waterloo was in charge of arrangements. Elsie died August 8, 1996.

She was born January 16, 1921, in Albia, the daughter of Archie and Annie Findley Lewis. She married Curtis Pryor in 1938 in Albia. After her divorce, she married Arnold Miller in November 1950 in Nebraska. He died in December 1960.

Elsie worked as a service manager at Sears for 30 years, retiring in 1982.

Elsie is survived by her companion of 34 years, Janes Dusheck; two sons: Donald Miller of Tracy, CA, and James Milelr of Winnetka, IL; two daughters: Sharon Fett of Bonaparte and Linda Miller of Dunkerton; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five brothers: James Lewis and Guy Lewis of Waterloo, Roy Lewis of Redding, CA, and twins Claude Lewis and Clell Lewis, both of Albia; and two sisters: Francis Edgington and Marjorie Edgington, both of Albia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; two brothers: Clifford Lewis and Doc Lewis; and one stepdaughter, Karen Miller.


Joseph Tupy

Joseph Tupy, 91, died August 5, 1996, at the New Hampton Care Center following a short illness.

Funeral services for Joseph were held August 8 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. The Rev. Daniel Keppler presided. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph was born April 5, 1905 in rural Spillville to Mike and Victoria (Taylor) Tupy. He attended Spillville schools.

On June 15, 1926 Joseph married Mary Novak at St. Wenceslaus Church. He farmed west of Spillville, moving to New Hampton to live with his daughter after his wife died in 1981.

Joseph was a member of Catholic Workman Branch #33 of Spillville.

Joseph is survived by a his daughter, Georgina Roete of New Hampton; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Viola Tuchek, of Elma.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two grandchildren, Sally and Debbie; his parents; two brothers: Mike and Louis Tupy; and two sisters: Emma Panos and Celia Langran.


Ronald Elwin Griebel

Ronald Elwin Griebel, age 86, of rural Austin, MN, died Thursday, August 8, 1996, of injuries sustained in a car accident near Rochester, MN.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 17 at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with the Rev. Luther Mathsen officiating. Interment was in Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery with the American Legion Post #91 and the Olaf B. Damm #1216 Veteran of Foreign Wars in charge of military rites. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Ronald was born February 17, 1929, to George and Lucy (Collins) Griebel on a farm near Decorah. he graduated from Decorah High School in 1947. During high school and following graduation he was employed at the Decorah Journal newspaper.

In 1951 Ronald joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the American occupation forces in Germany. There he met and married Maria Ebert in 1954. When they returned to the States, he was employed as a typesetter, first in Oakland, IA, and then in Cresco.

From 1959 to 1973 he leased and managed the North Star Truck Stop in Austin, MN. and then he owned/managed the Coast-to-Coast hardware store in Blooming Prairie, MN. He was currently employed by Mower House Graphics, Inc.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Maria; and a sister, Arlene Stoddard of Decorah.

Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Carl and Stanley.


Louise Mary Loesch

Funeral services for Louise Mary Loesch, age 72, of rural Calmar, were held Friday, August 16, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Interment was in the church cemetery. Rev. Daniel Keppler officiated and Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Louise died August 14, 1996, at Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI following a short illness.

Louise was born October 3, 1923, in Spillville to Joseph and Elizabeth (Sabelka) Petrik. She attended Spillville Schools.

On January 7, 1947, she married Leonard Loesch at St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville. She farmed with her husband east of Spillville.

Louise was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Spill-ville Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard; a son, Joseph, of rural Calmar; a daughter, Rita Croatt, of Bloomington, MN, and a brother, Ralph Petrik, of Calmar.

Preceding her in death were her son, George, and her parents.


Ronald R. Mashek

Funeral services for Ronald R. Mashek, 56, of Calmar, were held August 13 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Interment was in the church cemetery. Rev. Robert Hirsch officiated and Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ronald died August 9, 1996 of an apparent heart attack while attending the Rural Letter Carriers convention in Charleston, WV.

Ronald was born January 11, 1940, in Decorah to Walter and Leona (Zeman) Mashek. He graduted from Calmar High School in 1958 and lived in Winneshiek County all of his life. He has been a rural letter carrier for 14 years.

Ronald was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association for 26 years and was also a past president of the organization. He was a past president of the Lions Club, and past president of the South Winn Golf & Country Club. He was mayor of Calmar for eight years and was presently a city councilman.

Ronald leaves behind his fiancee, Rosie Kuhlmann, of LaCrescent, MN. Surviving Ronald is his brother, Alvin, of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy in 1947.


Joseph F. Prochaska

Joseph F. Prochaska, age 47, of Iowa City, died August 19, 1996 at his residence.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 22 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Reverend Roy C. Nilsen officiated. Interment was held on Friday, August 23 in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, IA. George L. Gay Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph was born June 1, 1949 in Lime Springs, the son of Albert L. Prochaska and Pauline Lorraine Leman. He was raised on a farm near Davis Corners. After graduating from Crestwood High School in 1967, Joseph attended Northern Iowa Community College in Mason City.

Joseph worked in the banking industry in Des Moines and Oskaloosa before moving to Iowa City in 1985 to work at Hills Bank as a data processing officer. He married Janice Schnitzler on July 14, 1984 in Burr Oak.

Survivors include wife: Janice Prochaska of Iowa City; step-daughters: Jolonda Parrett of Cen-terville and Julie-Jean Parrett of Iowa City; his father: Albert L. Prochaska of Cresco; three sisters: Anne Prochaska of Des Moines, Kathy Williamson of Altoona, and Irma Kelly of Des Moines; and one brother: David Prochaska of Fort Madison.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Prochaska, and his grandparents.


Margaret H. Qvern

Services for Margaret H. Qvern were held at Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. The Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiated with interment in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral HOme was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret, 76, died at the Cresco Care Center August 22, 1996.

Margaret H. Qvern was born January 1, 1920, at Bellvue, IA, the daughter of Max and Christina (Dirkson) Joerger. She graduated from high school and attended college for three years becoming a registered nurse.

On April 14, 1943, in Walla Walla, WA, she married Robert Ray Qvern.

She is survivied by her three daughters: Dianne Wemark of Ridgeway, Kristing Richardson of McIntire, and Marti Chvatal of Rosemont, MN; one son, Bob Jr. Qvern of Cresco; 15 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Alice Herold of Kileen, TX, LaVerne Kelly of Waukon and Florence Woods of Seattle, WA.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter; one great-grandson; hter parents; three brothres and three sisters.


Louie Fencl

Funeral services for Louie Fencl, 99, of Protivin, were held Monday, August 12 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church i n Protivin. Rev. Allan Schmitt presided. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Balik Funeral Home of Decorah was in charge of arrangements. Louie died Wednesday, August 7, 1996, at his home in Protivin following a short illness.

Louis was born May 20, 1897 in Protivin to Frank and Marie (Pecinovsky) Fencl. He attended Protivin schools.

On September 25, 1934, he married Alice Lukes at Holy Trinity Church. He and Alice and their children lived on the family farm east of Protivin until 1968 when they moved to Protivin after retirement.

Louie was a member of Catholic Workmen and the Knights of Columbus, and was on the cemetery board for over 40 years.

He is survived by two daughters: Mary Ann Andera of Lawler and Betty Falada of Decorah; four sons: Leonard and Victor of Calmar, Jim of Charles City, and Ernie of Protivin; 18 grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Edward of Meeker, OK and Henry of Lawler; and two sisters: Lillian O Sullivan and Adella Larsen, both of Huntington, Long Island, NY.

Louis was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; six sisters: Elizabeth in 1894, Frances Starr, Victoria Fencl, Marie Zalen, Theresa McGrew and Betty Byram; two brothers: Charles and Rev. Leonard J. Fencl, S.J.; and two grandchildren. Lillian O'ters, and James MilleHampton; three grandchildren.


John H. Flatland

John H. Flatland, 95, died Mon-day, August 19 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 24,1996 Peace RidgewayPastor Phillip Olson and Ginny Olson, Associate in Ministry, -at Lincoln Cemetery, rural Ridgeway.Fjelstul JohnNovember4, 1900Lincoln TownshipWinne-shiek County, Kjittil (Charlie) and Mary (Hotvedt) Flatland. He attended rural schools and latter attended Luther Academy of Albert lea, MN. On December 2, 1926 he was married to Julia Halvorson in Madison Twp. They farmed in Lincoln Twp. until 1957, when they moved to Ridgeway.

John Flatland was active in Lincoln and Peace Lutheran Church and Parish re-alignment committee. He served on several boards Ñ Township Board of Education, President of Telephone Board, Pres-ident of Lincoln Co-op Creamery Assoc., President-Winneshiek Co-op Board and also served on Ridgeway City Council.

Survivors include 1 daughter: Rev. Harriet Danielson (Mrs. Roland); 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, ther Academy of Albert lea, MN.

Julia died in 1973.

John married Gertrude (Gesell) Johnson in 1988Roy C. Nilsen officiated.


Margaret Qvern

Funeral services for Margaret Qvern, 76, of Cresco were held Monday, August 26 at Asssumption Catholic Church in Cresco with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Fr. Michael Fitzgerald officiated at the service. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret died Thursday, August 22, 1996, at the Cresco Care Center.

She is survived by her son, Bob, Jr., of Cresco and three daughters: Dianne Wemark of Ridgeway, Kristing Richardson of McIntire, and Marti Chvatal of Rosemont, MN; three sisters: Alice Herold of Killeen, TX, Laverne Kelly of Waukon, and Florence Woods of Seattle, WA; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, one great-grandson, her parents, three brothers and three sisters.


Ferneva Wilken

Ferneva Wilken, 78, died Saturday, August 24, 1996 at the home of her daughter in Olathe, CO.

There will be a committal service this Saturday, August 31, at St. Matthew's Cemetery in Granger, MN. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Ferneva was born in the Cresco area to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Krueger. She and her husband had lived for many years in the Minneapolis area before moving to Colorado. Ferneve had made her home in Montrose, CO, until the last six weeks.

She is survived by a son, Allen, of Nashville, TN, and a daughter, Karen Lewis of Olathe, CO.

BreAnn Marie Bauercamper

Funeral services for BreAnn Bauercamper on Tuesday, August 27 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon. Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiated. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery and Martin Funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

BreAnn Marie Bauercamper died suddenly at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon on August 23, 1996.

BreAnn was born March 2, 1996, toJanice L. Stortz and Michael T. Bauercamper, both of Waukon.

She is survived by her parents; grandparents: John and Marian Bauercamper of Waukon, James and Shirley Stortz of Waukon; and great-grandparents: Ruth W. Bauercamper of Cresco, Vera Stortz and Adeline Hammel of Waukon.
