Thomas P. Leary, 84, of Charles City, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Thomas Leary will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday where a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 4 p.m. with the Rosary following lead by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

            Carol J. Zwanziger, 75, of Ionia, died Thursday afternoon, November 4, 2010, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

            Funeral services for Carol Zwanziger will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua.  Pastor Tom Hagen will officiate.  Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

            Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.  Visitation will continue after 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the church.

            Carol Jean Buttolph was born March 15, 1935, in Waterloo, the daughter of Ralph and Florence (Hansen) Buttolph.  She graduated from the Riceville High School.  On May 26, 1963, she was united in marriage to Duane Zwanziger at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo.  Carol was employed at Montgomery Ward in St. Paul, Minn. and Rath Packing Company in Waterloo.  Later on after moving to the farm, Carol chose to stay home and raise her family.  She was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua.  Her interests included reading, the computer, TV, crocheting, crafts, playing cards, gambling and spending time with her family and friends.

            Living family members include her two children, Bruce (Sharla) Zwanziger of New Hampton and Connie (Chris) O’Neill of Mackinaw, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Madison Zwanziger, Jake Zwanziger, Dillon Zwanziger, Austin O’Neill, Bryce O’Neill, Karli O’Neill and Grace O’Neill; sister, Marilyn (Allen) Baker of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and mother-in-law, Mary Marie Zwanziger of Waverly.

            She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband.

            In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ionia Library or Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua.

Robert R. Dastart was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Charles City, to Matt and Martha Dastart. He passed away at his home in Portland, Ore. He is survived by his wife, Gladys, daughters Sandra and Mike DeCarte, Karen and Dale Knight-Box, one son Robert Jr., one sister Marlys Howe, and one brother-in-law, Lawrence Peters, both from Charles City, along with grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers. He was buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. on Oct. 27.

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Carol A. Bugenhagen, 71, of Black River Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Black River Memorial Hospital under the care of Black River Memorial Hospice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, 12, at the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. Eric Bakken will officiate.

            Cynthia J. Kern, 53, of Charles City, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City after a valiant struggle with cancer.

            Cynthia Jane Smith Kern was born May 15, 1957, at Waterloo, the daughter of Eual and Clara (Taylor) Smith McFarland.  She attended school in Waterloo and later received her GED.  On April 4, 1983, she was united in marriage to Tom Kern.  Cynthia was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  She enjoyed cooking and caring for various animals over the years.  Cynthia will always be remembered for her loving and caring spirit.

            Living family members include her son, Aaron Kern of Osage; three brothers, Ricky (Kathy) McFarland of Waterloo, Bob (Gina) McFarland of Charles City and Timothy McFarland of Waterloo; a sister, Ruth (Dan Huffman) Ungs of Charles City; several nieces and nephews; and her dog Buster.   

            She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Euala Smith.

Dr. Edward E. "Ed" Schmiedel

            Dr. Edward E. “Ed” Schmiedel, 80, of Charles City, died Tuesday morning, November 16, 2010, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

            Funeral services for Dr. Ed Schmiedel will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Charles City.  Pastor Forrest Cornelius will officiate.  Inurnment will be at a later date in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

            Edward Earl Schmiedel was born February 20, 1930, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of G.O. and Harriet (Updegraf) Schmiedel.  He attended Marshalltown High School.  After attending junior college, he transferred to the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in medicine in 1955.  From there, he completed his residency at Fresno County Hospital in California before serving as a physician in the U.S. Army at the Pueblo Ordinance Depo in Colorado.  In 1958, he began his medical practice in Charles City and served the community until 1993, making house calls up to the day he retired.  Dr. Schmiedel was Floyd County’s Coroner for over two decades.  He also served as President of both Floyd County Medical Association and the YMCA Board.  He was also a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and a Trustee of the Congregational Church.  He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, hunter and fisherman.  Ed and Jean traveled the world with Medi-Clinics and he enjoyed his annual fishing trips to the Canadian wilderness.  His compassion will be always missed.

            Living family members include his wife, Jean Schmiedel of Charles City; three children, Barbara Jean (RJ) Ley of Brookfield, Wis.; Edward Andrew Schmiedel of Minneapolis, Minn. and James Weems (Darcie) Schmiedel of Charles City; five grandchildren, Nathan and Daniel Ley, Makenna, Emma and Nolan Weems Schmiedel; two brothers, Gilbert (Arlene) Schmiedel of Davenport and Robert (Sharon) Schmiedel of Cedar Rapids; and a nephew, Daniel Schmiedel of Cedar Rapids.

            He was preceded in death by his parents.

John B. McDevitt

            John B. McDevitt, 93, of Charles City, formerly of Keokuk, died Thursday, November 18, 2010, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

            Funeral services for John McDevitt will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.  Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate.  Burial will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk.

            The family will greet friends after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.           

            John Baldwin McDevitt was born September 17, 1917, in Keokuk, the son of Daniel and Susan (Baldwin) McDevitt.  He graduated from the Keokuk High School.   On August 18, 1940, he was united in marriage to Marcine Dupy, in Keokuk.  From 1944 to 1945, John proudly served in the United States Navy.  He was employed as a railroad switchman for the Chicago Burlington Quincy/Burlington Northern Railroad for 38 years.  His interests included playing softball, watching trains, riding Mike’s train, watching TV and going on car rides, especially to the Mississippi River.

            Living family members include his three children, Michael (Jane) McDevitt of Coatesville, Pa., Marcia (Richard) Olesen of Charles City and Cathy (Bob) Guess of Amarillo, Texas; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

            He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two granddaughters, Debbie and Diana Guess; and three brothers.

            In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Honor Flight.

            Joseph G. Linkenmeyer, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday evening, November 22, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

            Per Joe’s request, he has been cremated with no services.

            Joseph George Linkenmeyer was born May 21, 1924, in Ionia, the son of George and Anna (Tilkes) Linkenmeyer.  He married Theresa Finnegan on August 27, 1948, at St. Boniface Church in Ionia.  Joe enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 1942, serving in the Pacific Theater as a Gunner’s Mate 1st Class, he was honorably discharged in April of 1946.  He was employed at the Oliver in Charles City and Rath Packing Company in Waterloo until his retirement in 1984.

            He is survived by his wife, Theresa Linkenmeyer of Charles City; daughter, Jennifer (Max) Wildes of Evansdale; grandson, David (Lisa) Young; great-grandsons, AJ and Jacob Young of Asbury; brother, George (Mary) Linkenmeyer of Waterloo; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

            He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Laura, Agatha, Luella, and Ramona; and a brother, Francis.

            In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.



Beverly J. Farrell

Beverly J. Farrell, 66 of Clinton, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa  City.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Prince of Peace Parish Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Sean Lawrence, Kevin Hilgendorf, Derik Riessen, Nick Lawrence, Chris Powers, and Colin Sullivan. Serving as  honorary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. at eh Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Beverly Jean Stewart was born on Jan. 30, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Raymond and Lois (Elwood) Stewart. She was a 1962 graduate of Charles City High School. She then attended La James Beauty School in Mason City.

Bev married Earl Farrell on June 19, 1965, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. They moved to Clinton in 1966 and Bev worked as a clerk at Eagles Grocery Store for 26 years at the 13th avenue North and Lincolnway store until retiring in 1998.

Bev was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially he grandchildren.

Bev is survived by her husband of 45 years: Earl of Clinton; four daughters: Andrea (Sean) Lawrence of Camanche, Nancy (David) Smith of Clearwater, Fla., Lisa (Kevin) Hilgendorf of Waukee, and Katie (Derek) Riessen of Clinton; 12 grandchildren: Nicholas (Cherie Paullilne)    Lawrence, Stacy (Chris) Powers, Megan( Colin Sullivan) Lawrence, Jordan Lawrence, Christopher Smith, Michael Smith, Hailey Hilgendorf, Dylan Hilgendorf, Logan Hilgendorf Joshua Riessen, Caleb Riessen, and Emma Riessen; one great-granddaughter: Taylor Powers; and one brother: Craig (Pam) Stewart of Charles City.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Roy E. Fisher went home to his Heavenly Father on Nov. 23, 2010.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, at the First United Pentecostal Church, officiated by the Rev. Mickey Shields and the Rev. Darrell Kobs. Entombment will be in the Rest Haven Memorial Park Mausoleum, by Shinn Funeral Service.

Active pallbearers will be Maurice Brossard, Ed Stingley, Richard Ruble, John Gasaway, Dr. Finley Turner and Ken Langford. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Downtown Rotary Club.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

            Darlene Ploeger, 78, of Charles City, died Thursday, November 25, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

            Funeral services for Darlene Ploeger will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.  Pastor David Werges of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate.  Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

            Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and an hour prior to the service on Tuesday. 

            Darlene Marlis Hackbarth Ploeger was born August 9, 1932, at Charles City, the daughter of Harold and Bernice (Clark) Hackbarth.  She graduated in 1951 from the Charles City High School.  On August 23, 1953, she was united in marriage to Sheldon Ploeger.  They farmed near Floyd and over the years Darlene worked at Peerless Photo, Charles City Press and at the Salsbury Baptist Home.  Darlene was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Bowler’s Association, Women of the Moose, V.F.W. Auxiliary, TOPS and M&M Girls Birthday Club.  Her interests included reading, working crossword puzzles and putting together jigsaw puzzles.  Darlene always enjoyed spending time with her family, taking special interest in her grandchildren.

            Living family members include three children, Cathy (Rich) Bergan of Cresco, Michael (Brenda) Ploeger of Ankeny and Karen (Robert) Winters of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a brother, Darrell Hackbarth and special friend, Ruth Graf of Mason City; two half brothers, Thomas and Kelly Hackbarth of Minneapolis, MN; and two half sisters, Susan (Tim) Armstrong and Mary (Jim) Hollerbach both of Minneapolis.

            She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on June 23, 1986; step mother, Mary Hackbarth; a half brother, Paul Hackbarth; and uncle and aunt, Ernest and Florence Hecht.
