Phyllis T. Glaser, 76, of New Hampton died Sunday morning, Feb. 28, 2010, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Washington with interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Washington.

Friends may call 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton, (641) 394-4334. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at church on Thursday.

Jamie L. Fox, 33, of Greene, died Feb. 27, 2010, in an accident.

Funeral services for Jamie Fox will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor David Werges and Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue an hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Jamie Lee Barr was born Jan. 20, 1977, at Charles City, the daughter of Steven and Diane (Sabin) Barr. She graduated from Charles City High School. On March 30, 1996, she was united in marriage to Chet Fox at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Jamie was employed at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City as a secretary. She coached girls’ softball in Greene and was very active in her girls’ activities. Her interests included jewelry making, arts, crafts, camping, boating, outdoors, animals, hobby farming and spending time with her family.

Living family members include her husband, Chet Fox of Greene; three daughters: Allison, Kaylie and Hannah Fox, all of Greene; parents Steve and Diane Barr of Charles City; a sister, Angie (Tim) Ross of Austin, Minn.; a brother, Doug (Amber) Barr of Tecumseh, Okla.; maternal grandmother Agnes Sabin of Oelwein; paternal grandparents Roland and Annette Barr of Mercedes, Texas; parents-in-law Shelley Fox of Cresco and David Fox of New Haven; and many aunts, uncles, niece, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her great grandparents; and maternal grandfather, Alvin Sabin.

Amanda Gray, 101, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Amanda Gray will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Amanda Catherine Howe Gray was born April 25, 1908, at Charles City, the daughter of Frank and Bertha (Harnisch) Howe. She graduated from the Charles City High School. Amanda married Frank Gray and they later separated. For many years she worked at the Oliver Corporation. Amanda was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church where she had sung in the choir. Her interests included reading the Bible and cooking.

Living family members include three children: Dorothy Hadley of Charles City, Ronald Gray of Big Lake, Minn., and Raymond (Gerri) Gray of Littleton, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-grandson; a sister, Lenora Webber; a brother, Marvin Howe; and son-in-law Charles Hadley.

Raymond Milton Koehler, 93, of Rockford, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at his home.

Private family funeral services for Ray Koehler were held Monday, March 1, 2010. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Ray Koehler was born Sept. 14, 1916, in Ulster Township, the son of Wesley and Ida (Ziebell) Koehler. He graduated from the Rockford High School. On June 12, 1942, he was united in marriage to Ruth Marth. Ray farmed all of his life on his century farm where he lived. He was a member of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church. He loved being on his farm and his dog, Bob. Family was the most important thing to Ray, and he loved the time they all spent together.

Living family members include his two daughters, Myrna (Rand) Pitkin of Rockford and Ann (Dave) Sudduth of Fort Collins, Colo.; six grandchildren: Shane (Stef) Pitkin, Shamus Pitkin, Seth Pitkin and his fiancée, Liz Klus, Sean Pitkin, Jessica Sudduth and Sean Sudduth; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Pitkin and Barrin Hendricks; two sisters, Carol Burkhardt of Waverly and Geri Dancliff of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a sister-in-law, Janet (Wayne) Rawley of Iowa City; brothers-in-law Harold (Bonnie) Marth of Rockford and Richard (Nancy) Marth of Marian; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, Charles; sisters; and brothers.

Emma Mohring, 96, of Charles City, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at 11th Street Chautauqua in Charles City.

A funeral service will be held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City, on Friday, March 5, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 4, from 5-7 p.m. at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Emma Tahlkeanne Amelia Mohring was born on Dec. 31, 1913, in Kossuth County, the daughter of Klaas and Mary (Rath) Zimmerman. She was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Lotts Creek. As a child, her family moved to the Rockford area, where she was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church. She was united in marriage to Delwood “Heinie” Mohring on Aug. 20, 1931, in Charles City. In 1936 her family again moved north of Charles City, her father would pass away soon after. Heinie and Emma would eventually move to their current home, the longtime family farm, north of Charles City.


Emma was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She enjoyed taking care of her home and working on the farm. She also took pride that she still mowed her own yard and drove her car until the age of 95 years. Her family was important to her and she kept up with the daily events of their lives. She loved the family celebrations where she always volunteered to bring the pies, with raisin cream, apple and custard being her favorites. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delwood “Heinie” in 1987; great-grandson David Kapping in 1974; son-in-law Delbert Kapping in 1990; sisters Louise Anderson and Ella Hicok; and brothers Herman, Benny and Emil Zimmerman.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Evelyn Kapping of Nashua; grandchildren Barbara (Larry) Fuls of Charles City, Sheri (Darrell) Bonorden and Dennis (Judy) Kapping, all of Nashua; great-grandchildren Jenifer (Kurt) Leistikow, Amy (Jon) Paulus, Ashley Bonorden, Eric Kapping, Jeff Kapping and Kyle Bonorden; eight great great-grandchildren; her sisters, Esther Meyne of Charles City and Maryanne Stenhart of Waverly; sister-in-law Savera Zimmerman of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

GREENE — A Funeral Mass for Cecilia Maxson, 101, of 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Friday, March 5, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will conduct a Rosary Service at 6 p.m. followed by a Scriptural Wake Service. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Dale A. Nehls, 40, of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at his home.

Funeral services for Dale Nehls will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Debra Lincoln of Jordan River and Colwell United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Dale Arthur Nehls was born Aug. 7, 1969, at Charles City, the son of Clair and LaDonna (Simerson) Nehls. He graduated from the Charles City High School, received his bachelors degree from Luther College and attended Iowa State. Dale had been employed for several years at Principal Financial Group in Mason City. His interests included playing guitar and listening to music. Dale also looked forward to the times spent with his family.


Living family members include three brothers: David (Charlotte) Nehls of Charles City, Doug Nehls of Norwalk and Daniel “Pete” Nehls and special friend Toots of New Hampton; seven sisters: Mary (Gary) Druehl of Colwell, Karen (Bob) Roethler of Charles City, Diana (Dean) Bucknell of Charles City, Susan (Steve) Redmond of Charles City, Chris (Tony) Byers of Colwell, Cathy (Randy) Nibaur of Austin, Minn. and Theresa (David) Turpen of Webster City; a foster brother, Bill (Edna) Wynniger of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dennis Nehls; and a nephew, Scott Druehl.

Maxine Pattschull, 83, of Charles City, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Memorial services for Maxine Pattschull will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Maxine Ivadelle Freiberg Pattschull was born Feb. 10, 1927, at Charles City, the daughter of Carl and Sylvia (Erion) Freiberg. She was raised by her aunt and uncle Elsie and Dale Stewart. Maxine graduated from the Charles City High School in 1945. On Feb. 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Everett Pattschull at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. They farmed southwest of Charles City. Maxine also worked at Salsbury Laboratories and for several years at Northwestern Bell. Her interests included traveling, playing cards and bargain shopping. She always looked forward to sharing her life with her family and friends.


Living family members include her husband, Everett Pattschull of Charles City, three children: Kathy (Douglas) Franke, Debra (James) Mehmen both of Charles City and Tracy (Janice) Pattschull of Greene; seven grandchildren: Bridgette (Bryan) Quade, Brandon (Lindsey) Franke, Heather, Shane and Ashly Mehmen, Toya (Jeff) Heideman and Cody Pattschull; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mavis (Clem) Kilby of Charles City; three half sisters: Patty (Lyle) Bunston of Goldfield, and Jean (Roger) Duffield and Carmen (Keith) Angell, both of Charles City; and two half brothers, William (Sharon) Freiberg of Charles City and William (Mavis) Severson of Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two half sisters, Bonnie Severson and Joan Schneider.

Donna M. (Bonzer) Bunston

Donna M. (Bonzer) Bunston, 64, of Ionia formerly of Nashua, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 8, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua with Rev. James Mann officiating.

Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City with Cody Austin, Michael Rabbit, Cole Rabbit, Stephen Lines, Steve Minikus, Jared Minikus and Casey Bunston serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Bunston Family.

Donna Mae was born Feb. 2, 1946, in Charles City, the daughter of Kenneth and Valeda (Winkelman) Lines. She attended rural grade school and graduated from Nashua High School in 1964. In March of 1965, she was united in marriage to Donald Bonzer. To this union two children were born. The couple later divorced. For most of her life Donna lived in Nashua. She received her college education at NIACC, studying in the medical field. She retired from Floyd County Memorial Hospital in 2007 after 19 years of faithful service. On June 20, 2009, Donna was united in marriage to Larry Bunston. This was the highlight of her retirement as well as the building of their new home in rural Ionia. Donna was a collector of dolphins, enjoyed bird watching, loved being with family, friends and being out in nature.

Donna is survived by her husband, Larry of Ionia; her parents, Kenneth and Valeda Lines of Nashua; one son, David (Denise) Bonzer of Wellsburg; one daughter, Dianna (Steve) Minikus of Denver; one step-son, Casey (Shelly) Bunston of Cresco; three step-daughters, Chelsea and Lacey Bunston both of Charles City and Abbey Bunston of Bassett; one sister, Gloria (Richard) Elwood-Wyborny of Charles City; one brother, Paul (Christi) Lines of Nashua; her father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Vera (Caster) Bunston of Ionia; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Kathryn’s death occurred on March 5, 2010, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union at the age of 97 years. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 8, at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union.

Kathryn Beatrice Hinsenbrock, daughter of Herman John and Rosa (Berns) Hinsenbrock, was born July 1, 1912, at Hillsboro, Ill. She was baptized on Aug. 4, 1912, at St. Agnes Church in Hillsboro and confirmed her faith at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union in 1924. Kathryn attended elementary country school in Dover and Union Townships in Fayette County and graduated from West Union High School in 1929. She graduated from St. Teresa College in Winona, Minn., in 1933, received her master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1944 and did one more year of graduate school beyond her master’s.

Her career began in St. Adrian’s H.S. in Adrian, MN teaching from 1933-1936, was high school principal at Lyle, Minn., from 1936–1940, high school principal at St. Ansgar, Iowa from 1940–1942, taught 9th grade Algebra at Austin, MN from 1942–1943 and was head of the mathematics department at Charles City High School from 1943-1977. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the America’s, I.C.B.V.M. Chapter Lay Carmelites Phi Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma International. Kathryn enjoyed living on her farm and working in her yard and garden.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three sisters, Virginia Meskel, Evelyn Reinecke and Mary Gorsche and adopted brother, Richard Hinsenbrock.

Those left to cherish Kathryn’s memory are her two sisters, Helen Molumby of West Union and Isabelle Gay of Madrid; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Diann Cline of West Union.

MASON CITY — Floretta “Flip” Wilson, 85, of Britt, formerly of Mason City, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Avenue in Mason City. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

A visitation will be held at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd Street SE in Mason City on Tuesday, March 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. and again one hour prior to the service at the church.

Melvin Hackbart

OSAGE — Melvin George Emil Hackbart, age 91, of Osage, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 12, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation with the body present for viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Melvin was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Osage, the son of Edward and Wilhemina “Minnie” (Tabbert) Hackbart. He attended Osage schools through the 10th grade and then began doing farm work. Melvin joined the U.S. Army in August of 1942 and was stationed in Arkansas where he was an MP for the POWs held there, and also hauled munitions from the factory to the Air Force Base in Stuttgart, Arkansas. While he was stationed in Arkansas, he met Emma Virginia Horton of Pine Bluff. They were married June 30, 1943. After his honorable discharge, they moved back to the Osage area where he was employed by Tyrholm Implement, Osage Schools, and Lampert’s Lumber Yard. Melvin was a lifelong member of Our Savior’s Lutheran church in Osage and was a member of the Osage American Legion. He was an avid Osage Green Devils fan, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family.

Melvin is survived by two daughters, Bev DeWalle of Charles City and Pat (Kaye) Betts of Mason City; one son, Charlie (Glenda) Hackbart of Ackley; nine grandchildren: Don DeWalle, Jr., Mark DeWalle, Dawn (Richard) Flugge, Darin (Nikki) DeWalle, Bob Betts, Tonya Hickman, Tim Hackbart, Kristina Hackbart, and Danielle Hackbart; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Virginia in 1990; three brothers Oscar, Ray, and Roy; one sister, Elfrieda Beyer; one son-in-law, Donald DeWalle, Sr.; and one granddaughter-in-law, Blenn Betts.

MARBLE ROCK — Terence L Carpenter, 58, of Marble Rock died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A Private Family Service is being arranged through Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene. Memorials may be addressed to the Terence L. Carpenter Memorial Fund in care of Reid’s Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 219 Greene, 50636-0219.

Terence Len Carpenter was born May 13, 1951, in Iowa City, a son of Lois Mae Carpenter. He was raised in Greene and graduated from Greene High School in 1969. He then attended welding school at Osceola and worked at various manufacturing plants; including DMC in Mason City and G&L Products in Charles City.

On March 28, 1975, Terence married Cindy Johnson in Folkston, Ga. In 1990 they became foster parents and hosted over 300 foster children over the years. In 2003, due to ill health, this came to an end. However he remained in contact with many of the children he fostered.

Terence enjoyed being in the outdoors, camping, fishing and watching stock car races. He also enjoyed watching M*A*S*H and professional wrestling.

Surviving family include his sons: Larry James Fuller of Osceola, John Carpenter of Charles City and Jarred (Amanda) Carpenter of Rockford; their sons: Joshua, Ceagen and Cody; Kory Carpenter, and special nephew, Zachary Johnson; former wife Cindy Carpenter, Marble Rock; a sister, Teresa (Kenny) Staudt, Marble Rock; a brother, Thomas (Sandi) Bouillon, Nora Springs; sisters Thelma (Steve) Neisen of Mason City, Tammie (Paul) Garber of Nora Springs, Toni Hill, Stewartville, Minn., and Tina (Howard) Iverson, Charles City; nieces and nephew; and all the foster children whose lives he touched.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Russel; and a brother, Tim.

NASHUA — James Russell “Jim” Johnson, 68, of Nashua, died Sunday, March 7, 2010.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua with Rev. Okitakoyi Lundula officiating. Special music selections include “Amazing Grace,” “In the Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua at a later date.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jim was born Oct. 31, 1941, in rural Nashua on the family farm, the son of Eugene and Virginia (Arnett) Johnson. He attended Nashua public schools. Jim worked at Walsh Manufacturing in Charles City for a number of years. He often attended high school sporting events. Jim’s passion was attending auctions. He collected many things throughout his life. Jim’s farm had many different animals, including dogs and potbellied pigs, and he enjoyed taking care of them and spending time with them.

Jim is survived by his cousins and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents.
