Ardith B. Goings

NASHUA — Ardith B. Goings, age 87 of Nashua died Friday Feb. 12, 2010, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, her daughter Kathy at her side.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with interment in Sunnyside Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Monday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the funeral at the church on Tuesday. Online condolences for Ardith may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com, (641) 435-4134.

Ardith Bernice Goings was born on Oct 27, 1922, at a farm near Plainfield, daughter of August and Lena Oleson. The ninth of 11 children, she was raised on the farm and after attending Nashua High School, she married Paul Goings, on Aug. 3, 1941. Together they had three children, Kathryn, Kenneth and Carl.

For the next 87 years, Ardith enriched the Nashua area with her spirit and her smile as she raised three children, gave freely of her time and energy to the community and was a loving and supportive wife to her husband. Despite early tragedy, in losing Carl at age 17, Ardith never lost her desire to give to others and through the years she held many jobs at her church, served on the ambulance crew for nine years and worked diligently with her husband Paul at the Food Pantry for over 20 years.

Ardith's true gift was as a caregiver, and throughout her life she demonstrated her love and compassion for others as she cared for her aging mother, then her mother-in-law and finally her husband Paul, as his bad health took its toll. Ardith had a special affinity for children, providing child care to many local children as well as her grandchildren and almost all tell wonderful stories of her "cowboy soup" (an exotic concoction that on close exam turned out to be Campbells Bean Soup), of overnight stays that resulted in waking the next morning to the sound of "THE INDIANS ARE COMING!" and the dire threat of "there is going to be war in this camp" when the children became too rowdy.

In later years Ardith returned to school, receiving her high school GED and discovered a real love of oil painting, a pastime that brought her great pleasure. Many of her works now hang in the homes of her grandchildren, a visual reminder of the warm spirit and love she gave to them.

Ardith is survived by a daughter, Kathryn (Robert) Baird, Evansdale; daughter-in-law Ruth Goings of Elkader; sisters Janet (Dwight) Barnhart of Greene and Gertrude Nelson of Phoenix Ariz.; grandchildren Scott (Amy) Goings, Mark (Barb) Goings, Peggy Goings, Mary (Tim) Otto, Susan (Scott) Koppmann, Robert (Kelly) Baird, Sara Baird; and great-grandchildren James, Jackson, Sam, Charlotte, Ben, Jacob, Riley, Matthew and Abby.

Ardith was preceeded in death by her husband, Paul; and sons Carl and Kenneth.
