Pearl H. Bode, 85, of Charles City, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 1, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Graveside services for Pearl Bode will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Pastor Jane Keel of the Messiah Lutheran Church will officiate.

Pearl Hazel Morgan was born May 29, 1924, at Lawton, Ok., the daughter of Ira and Elizabeth (Burnette) Morgan. On Jan. 1, 1948, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Bode in Texas. During WWII, Pearl worked at the air craft factories to aid the war effort. Her interests included fishing and duck hunting with her husband, playing cards, taking walks in the mountains, picking wild flowers and Pinion` Nuts and spending time with her family.

 Living family members include her four children: Helen (Rick) Winters of Ore., Larry (Collen) Col., Roy Bode of Charles City and Gerald Bode of Col.; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita Cox of Big Bear, Calif., and Naomi Jetton of San Bernardino, Calif.; a brother, Floyd Burnett of Lawton, Ok.; brother-in-law Paul (Dixie) Bode of Osage; a sister-in-law, Thelma Griggs of Sheridan, Wyo. and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Nathalie Place; and a brother, Sylvester Burnett.

Velva Meyer

Velva Meyer, 88, of Charles City, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at her home.

Funeral services for Velva Meyer will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag, of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue Thursday an hour prior to the service.

Velva Lorraine Lincke Meyer was born Aug.28, 1921, in Osage, the daughter of Emil and Amanda (Horgen) Lincke. She graduated from the Osage High School in 1938. On Jan. 25, 1942, she was united in marriage to Melvin Meyer at Osage. Over the years Velva worked at Osage Produce, Colwell School, 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Forest Lawn Cemetery, as a hostess at Hauser Funeral Home for several years and as a Foster Grandparent. She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eastern Star, V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Women of the Moose.

Living family members include four children, Sondra (Larry) Coen of Charles City, Linda (Bernard) Krall of Loveland, Colo., Dennis (Wanda) Meyer of Elma and Dana Meyer of Charles City; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Meyer of Laurel; and two sisters, Dorothy Kristiansen of Cedar Rapids and Edna Stott of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on May 26, 1976; a son, Jan Meyer; a brother, Glenn Lincke and a sister, Audrey Lincke.

Venita C. Roy

Venita C. Roy, 69, of Apple Valley, died in her home Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 13900 Biscayne Ave., Rosemount, Minn. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Henry W. Anderson Morturay, 14850 Garrett Ave., Apple Valley, and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

She was born Sept. 25, 1939, in Mason City, to Erwin and Cornelia (nee Lang) Siewertsen. Venita grew up in Rock Falls and Floyd, graduating from Floyd High School at age 16. She married Oliver D. Roy on Sept. 5, 1959, and moved to Apple Valley in 1980. Venita loved her grandchildren, baseball, baking (especially Christmas cookies, which she started baking about Thanksgiving), attending church and making everyone around her happy. She was an administrative assistant for the Law Firm of Faegre & Benson, LLP of Minneapolis for over 25 years.

Venita is survived by daughters Delanie Roy and Denise (Derek) Clendening; sons Derrick and Devlin (Katie) Roy; sisters Sue (Jack) Patton, Martha Torres and Olene “Tootie” (Al) Schroeder; a brother Maynard (Debra) Siewertsen; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Venita was preceded in death by her husband Oliver in 2005, and son Darren in 1990.

William Dunn

William “Bill” Dunn, 62, of Charles City, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.   

A funeral Mass for Bill Dunn will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Alta Vista.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Thursday where the Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. and the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

William Dennis Dunn was born March 3, 1947, at Charles City, the son of Franklin and Rose (Schmitt) Dunn. He attended Saint Williams School in Alta Vista and in 1970 graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Des Moines. On Aug. 7, 1965, he was united in marriage to Lucile Starr at Elma. Over the years he worked for John Deere, the Charles City Police Department and at NIACC. Bill was also proprietor of Dunn Photography for 30 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. His interests included collecting John Deere memorabilia and guns.

Bills’s greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. He took every opportunity to become involved in their activities and be a part of their lives.

Living family members include his wife, Lucile Dunn of Charles City; three children, Kim (Matt) Rowell of Shell Rock, Scott (Sophia) Dunn of Charles City and Heather (Greg) Detter of St. Louis, Mo; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Joe Campbell of Clarksville; a brother, Victor (Joan) Dunn of Charles City; and three sisters, Mary Schupanitz of New Hope, Minn., Sister Anne Marie of Mt. Pleasant and Eleanor (Ralph) Bistline of Omaha, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Michael Dunn; and a daughter, Karla Campbell.

Edward Sonne

Edward Sonne, 90, of Nashua, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Funeral services for Edward Sonne will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Nashua V.F.W. Post 6792.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Edward William Sonne was born May 10, 1919, at Charles City, the son of Harry and Clara (Armstrong) Sonne. He attended the Beckwith School. Edward proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II, serving on the USS Markab in the Pacific as a machinist. He received the Good Conduct Medal for his service. On July 10, 1948, he was united in marriage to Virginia Jaeger. To this union a son, Alan and a daughter, Nancy were born. Ed was a family man and worked as a farmer all his life. The family made their home near Bassett and farmed the Tolle farm. They moved to the Tolliver farm west of Charles City, where they lived for 19 years. For two years, they farmed the Bjelica farm, then purchased and moved to their most recent farm near the Cedar Ridge Golf Course.

His wife, Virginia, died March 9, 1980, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Six years later, March 1, 1986, he married Edith Korinke. In addition to the crop farming, Edward milked a herd of Holstein dairy cows for many years. After the Holstein cows were sold, he raised Holstein calves to be sold as springing heifers. Most recently, they raised beef. Edward loved Belgian draft horses and looked forward to showing them at the 4-County fair in Nashua. He also enjoyed the Waverly Draft Horse sale every year and the friendships that he had developed over time with the Amish community near Hazelton. Edward and Edith participated in parades and enjoyed bluegrass music festivals in the area. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion in Charles City, the V.F.W. in Nashua, Farm Bureau and Moose Lodge.

Living family members include his wife, Edith of Nashua; a daughter, Nancy (Mark) Scherer of Cambridge, Minn; three step children, Sandra (Jim) Lawrenz of Rockford, Jim (Karen) Korinke of Overland Park, Kans. and David Korinke of Nashua; three step granddaughters, Kelly (Lee) Whipple, Kerrie (Roni) Wyborny and Kristin Lawrenz; seven step great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Jaeger of Charles City, two sisters-in-law, Madelyn Sonne of Nashua and Norma Jaeger of Charles City; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Sonne of Charles City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; a son, Alan Sonne on March 9, 2007 and a brother, Dale Sonne.

MASON CITY — Marcella A. Ryner, 91, formerly of 8 S. Summit Ave., Nora Springs Assisted Living, Nora Springs died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Marcella was born Nov. 12, 1917, in Ashton, the daughter of Peter and Veronica (Ahmann) Strouth. Marcella grew up and was educated in Ashton. She graduated from the Ashton High School, class of 1935. On Dec. 29, 1939, Marcella was united in marriage to Donald C. Ryner in Burbank, Calif. Marcella had lived in the Rudd area most all of her life. She had been a homemaker throughout her life. Marcella was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and involved in the church circle. Marcella enjoyed bowling, gardening especially tending to her plants and flowers, baking and sewing. Marcella was very family oriented and known for being a hard worker. She took great pride in providing for her husband, family, grandchildren and great grandchildren who were always her greatest joy and priority. Marcella will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her. 

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Marcella’s life are her two children, Mike (Pam) Ryner of Nora Springs and Sue Staudt of Marble Rock; her 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and her sister, Irene Reymann of Burbank, Calif.

Preceding Marcella in death are her parents; her husband, Donald C. Ryner in 1982; two daughters, Janet L. and Shirley A.; a sister, Lorraine and her son-in-law, Cletus Staudt.

Gertrude Brandau

OSAGE — Gertrude Brandau, age 102, of Osage, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at the Eden Presbyterian Church, 3105 Glass Ave., Rudd, with Rev. John Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Rudd. Visitation is from 1-2 p.m. Monday before services at the Eden Presbyterian Church.

Gertrude was born Dec. 19, 1906, to Harm and Jennie (Buntjer) Hoppen in Rosemont, Neb. She was one of five children. On March 16, 1936, she was united in marriage to Edgar Brandau at her parents’ home in Rosemont. Edgar and Gertie farmed in the Rudd area until his death in May of 1969. She then moved to Charles City, living there until 2004, at which time she moved to Evergreen senior living apartments in Osage. She was a resident of Faith Lutheran Home for the past 2-1/2 years. Gertie was a member of the Eden Presbyterian Church, and the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Rudd Jolly Jacks and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed playing “500,” gardening and was a great cook. She also enjoyed doing crafts, quilting, crocheting, and knitting.

Survivors include a daughter, Elaine (Charlie) Fouts of Floyd; grandson Dana (Julie) Aschenbrenner and children, Joseph, Sam and John of Iowa City; grandson Mike (Beth) Aschenbrenner and children, Corey, Emma and Mikayla of Lake Mills; grandson Steve (Kristi) Aschenbrenner and children, Dylan and Claudia of Osage; granddaughter Michelle (Barry) Sweet of Charles City; sister-in-law Ruth Ploeger of Charles City; brother-in-law Robert Brandau of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edgar in May of 1969; three sisters and one brother.

Donna M. Hitzhusen, 97, of Charles City, died Thursday morning, Sept. 10, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Donna Hitzhusen will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Debra Lincoln of Jordan River and Colwell U.C.C. will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Donna Marie Chuick was born July 1, 1912, at Mason City, the daughter of Milan and Amelia (Knezovich) Chuick. She graduated from the Mason City High School and later attended Hamilton Business School for one year. On June 13, 1941, she was united in marriage to John Hitzhusen. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Church Circle and Floyd County Medical Center Auxiliary. Her interests included golf, playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren.

Living family members include her two children, Linda (Doug) Groesbeck of Charles City and Bill (Vicki) Hitzhusen of Houston, Texas.; four grandchildren: Emily (Jeff) Griswold, Dan Groesbeck, Kate Hitzhusen and Lauren Hitzhusen: one great-grandson, Ethyn Groesbeck; two sisters, Mary (Larry) Turner of Orlando, Fla., and Sophie Smith of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Milli Chorak; two brothers, Dan Chuick and Nick Chuick.

Elynn Davidson

Elynn Davidson, 47, of San Diego, Calif., and formerly of Charles City, died Sept. 9, 2009. 

A service will be held in San Diego with a graveside service in Charles City at a later date.

Elynn Norma Davidson was born Aug. 8, 1962, in Charles City to Irving and Elaine (Mitchell) Davidson. She attended Charles City Community Schools, graduating in 1980. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church. She received her LPN degree from Southern Oklahoma Area Vocational-Technical Center in 1993. In 1999, she graduated with a BS in Nursing from University of Iowa. Elynn worked in Iowa and California as a psychiatric nurse. She was a devoted advocate for her patients’ rights and dignity. 

Her father, Irving Davidson, died in 1988. 

She is survived by her mother, Elaine Davidson of San Diego; a son, Todd (Danielle) Davidson of Gardena, Calif.; two sisters, Noreen (James) Shirk of San Diego and Ione (Mathieu) Jazbinschek of Vancouver, Wash.; and a brother, Michael Davidson of Charles City. She had three nieces and one nephew, many aunts, uncles and cousins. Her family and her faith were a comfort as she suffered through a long illness.
