Mary Welcher

Mary A. Myers

    Mary A. Myers, 75, of 3038 Greene Rd., Greene died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 at the Hospice Unit of Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009 at Calvary Baptist Church in Greene with Pastor Rodger Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock.
    Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene with a 7 p.m., Scripture Service. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Tuesday at the Church.

Dorothy Heffron Lines

    Dorothy Heffron Lines, 81, of Osage, died of a stroke on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.  Dorothy was born June 11, 1927 in Charles City, the daughter of Frank and Thelma (Hanson) Paulus.  She attended school in Charles City and worked at National Tea until her marriage to Dean Heffron on June 19, 1946.  They made their home in Osage until Dean’s death in 1983.  Dorothy worked as office manager for the Co-op Oil Company in Osage for 30 years, and after her retirement did part time bookkeeping for B&J Auto in Mason City.  Dorothy was united in marriage to Maurice Lines, Sept. 27, 1985.  They lived in Marble Rock until Maurice’s death in 2004.
    Dorothy returned to Osage in 2005.  She loved to sew, do needlepoint, baking, gardening,  canning and working at the Osage Food Bank. Many of us will miss her treats.
    A celebration of life for Dorothy will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. John Moser officiating.  Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery. Visitation is from 4-6 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.  Dorothy  is survived by her daughters,  Deb Jacobs, Cherie (James “Red”) Merritt and Julie (Larry) Ackley,  all of Osage; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several other family and friends.                                           
    She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughter, Kathy McCready, brother, Donald Paulus, sister, Eileen and husband Emil Zimmerman, niece, Janet Trainer,  nephew, Mike Paulus and son-in-law, Charles Jacobs.

Evelyn Riggs

    On Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, Evelyn Riggs was called to her heavenly home.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 2, at 10:30 a.m. at the Gospel Lighthouse Church, 201 Madison Street, in Floyd, with Pastor Paul Phillips officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua. A visitation was held Sunday, Feb. 1 from 2-5 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, in Charles City.
    Evelyn Mae “Shorty” Monroe was born to Warren “Shorty” and Leona (Tonn) Monroe in Charles City on June 24, 1923. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1941. On Sept. 8, 1943, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Riggs in Covenant Mission Church in a quiet ceremony. The couple was married for over 61 years. She lived on Riggs’ Farm from 1944-1949. She worked for 28 years in at the Gutharts Grocery Store, which she enjoyed a lot. She then taught school at the Calvary Baptist Christian Academy for 13 years as a reading teacher for K-12. For the last few years she had lived at Riverside Senior Living.
    She went to the same church for 70 years. Her ministries were many. She played organ and piano for over 30 years, taught Sunday School and Bible School, was the church secretary, and anything that needed to be done, she did faithfully. Her support of ministers was 100 percent. In 2003 she and Bill came to Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd where she has been ever since. Her heart has always been with the Christian school.
    Many people meant so much to her. Bill and Evelyn are the parents of Larry (Cherri) Riggs of Illinois, Barbara Cooper of Falls Church, Va., and Dennis (Mi Hye) Riggs of Vernon Hills, Ill. She also leaves eight grandchildren: Valerie Cooper, Tony Cooper, Alicia Perry, Elizabeth Riggs, Miles Riggs, Eddie Riggs, Pam Hoffman and Phillip Riggs; 10 great grandchildren; and many cousins, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; sister, Berniece Childers; her parents and grandparents.

Addie Dry

    Addie Dry, 91, of Charles City, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.  
    Memorial services for Addie will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.  Pastor Todd Yeaton will officiate. Inurnment will be in Cripple Creek Cemetery, Cripple Creek, Va.
    The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.
    Addie Fulton Dry was born Dec. 23, 1917, at Wythville, Va., the daughter of Isaiah and Bertie (Lowe) Fulton.  She received her education at Cripple Creek, Va.  Addie was known for her expertise as a professional seamstress.  Her interests included sewing, crocheting, quilting, and making Barbie doll clothes.  Addie will be remembered for the dozens of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that she made.  She always took special interest in her grandchildren and would take every opportunity she could to share her life with them.
    Living family members include a daughter, Jewel (Rod) Flood of Floyd; three grandsons: Michael (Brandi) Flood, Jeremy (Julie) Flood and Edward (Betty Jo) Harville; and nine great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Russell and Ralph Fulton.

Sharon Bonham Mosbarger

    On Jan. 29, 2009, Sharon Bonham Mosbarger, 67, passed from this life to her eternal life. A celebration of her life is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Acton United Methodist Church.
    Sharon was born to Ed and Mary Bonham on March 11, 1941, in Fort Madison. She was the oldest of five spirited children. She graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1959. She married the love of her life, Robert Dean Mosbarger, the same year.
    Bob and Sharon raised three daughters in Iowa and vacationed regularly in Missouri at the Lake of the Ozarks. In 1989 they retired to Branson, Mo., where they enjoyed Table Rock Lake and the entertainment the area offered. In 1992, they moved further south to Lago Vista, Texas, where they enjoyed a very active social life.
    In 1994, Bob and Sharon made their final home together at Pecan Plantation, where Bob golfed and Sharon shopped. Sharon loved the view out her window and entertaining the many friends they met.
    Besides raising three daughters, everywhere she lived, Sharon was an active church member, continuous volunteer and avid water aerobics fan. She loved to read, listen to music, dance in her earlier years, art and Oprah. Her talents included cooking, her beautiful voice, her ability to draw, and her uncanny intuition. Her smile was beautiful and contagious. 
    Sharon was loved by everyone she met. Her death will leave a void in many lives, but her loving spirit continues in everything she touched. The family would like to thank the medical staffs and health care facilities that assisted her in her final years. She has found a new sense of joy and absence of pain and suffering in her new heavenly home.
    Survivors include: Her husband of 49 years, Robert; three daughters: Jan Gibson (Terry) of Dallas Center, Iowa, Jillian Lambert of Austin, Texas, and Joi Mosbarger of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren; sisters Connie Peterman of Donnellson, Iowa, Kim Bonham of Branson, Mo., and Tammy Yaley (Greg) of Dallas City, Ill.; sisters-in-laws Nancy Phillips (Irving) of Mechanicsville, Va, Thrisha Auge (Tim) of Ponca City, Ok.; and brother-in-law, Raymond Mosbarger (Phyllis) of Albia, Iowa; along with numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Acton United Methodist Church Library in memory of Sharon Mosbarger.

    Mary Irene Stuntz, 85, of 108 South High St., Greene, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.
    A Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Greene.

Doris Kranz

    Doris Kranz, 89, of Charles City, passed away Wednesday, Feb.  4, 2009 at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
    A funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main Street, in Charles City, with Rev. David Weges officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.  A visitation will be held at Fullerton Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, in Charles City, on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 5-7 p.m., and again one hour prior to the service at the church.     Doris was born on Aug. 17, 1919 in Mason City, the daughter of August and Minnie (Gullickson) Hahn. She lived in Charles City her entire life. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1937.  Doris was employed at Cedar Valley Hospital in housekeeping for seven years. She was united in marriage to Harold “Ole” Kranz on March 23, 1946. 
    Doris was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was also involved in many senior citizen groups, the Pythian Sisters and the Dorcas Circle.  She loved going on car trips with her husband, including their annual trip along the Mississippi River to see the leaves changing color.  She also enjoyed playing cards and spending time at McDonald’s with her friends.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter-in-law, Barbara Kranz of Osage; sister-in-law, Betty Kelleher of Nashua; nieces, Karen Olson of Marengo and Becky Schmidt of Nashua; nephews, David Hahn of Chehalis, Wash. and Douglas Hahn of Mason City; and her lifelong friend, Mid Meade.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold in 1989; son, Richard in 1995; and brothers, Erwin and Leland Hahn.

    Lena M. Herrick was born April 7, 1906 in Virginia, the daughter of Andrew J. and Grace F. (Fox) Baker. At the age of six, Lena moved to Independence, Iowa with her family. They later moved to Aredale where she attended country schools.
She was united in marriage to Harry L. Peters on May 3, 1927 in Horton. To that union five children were born. They moved to Nashua in October of 1942. Harry passed away June 28, 1956. Lena married George M. Herrick on Oct. 24, 1958 in Nashua, he passed away Sept. 5, 1985. Lena worked for the Oliver Corporation in Charles City for 23 years as a materials handler and on the assembly line before retiring in 1967. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua.
Lena is survived by one son, Melvin Peters of Mountain Home, Ariz.; two daughters, Adelia Biretz of Waterloo and Myrna Vikturek of Charles City; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry peters and George Herrick; one son, Leroy Peters on March 15, 1987; one daughter, Carol DeGrotte on Oct. 29, 1988 and four grandchildren.

Dale M. Studt

    Dale M. Studt, 80, of 1822 Springview Drive, died suddenly from a stroke Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating.  Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.  Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. 
    Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church one hour before services.          Memorials may be given to the Dale Studt memorial fund. 
    Dale was born July 23, 1928 in rural Luzerne, Iowa the son of Clarence and Lillian (Kettler) Studt.  He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1945, Iowa State University in 1949 and went on to receive his Masters degree from Iowa State in 1954. 
    Dale served in the Army Counter Intelligence Corp during the Korean War.  He married Ellen Narum in 1954, she died in 1959, then Lucille “Lucy” Olson, July 1, 1961, Lucy died in 1995.  Dale married Jeanette F. Venz Aug. 1, 1998.  Dale worked for Iowa State University as a Crop Specialist in the NIAD area extension office for 33 years.  He retired in 1987.  Dale received the Iowa State University Extension Distinguished Service Award and the Iowa State University Extension R.K. Bliss Award from Iowa State.  Following retirement, he worked as a private Crop Consultant for 11 years. |
    Dale was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City Evening Lions Club, where he was past president, and the American Legion.  He enjoyed volunteering and traveling.  A few of the organizations Dale volunteered for were the Blood Center of Iowa, Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Salvation Army, and Good Shepherd Health Center.  
    Dale is survived by his wife, Jeanette of Mason City; daughter, Laurel Lagoni and husband Pete of Fort Collins, Colo.; four grandchildren, Bryn and Kaia Lagoni, Laurie Jones and husband Greg, and Lisa Moore and husband Mike; three great grandchildren, Alan and Brock Moore, and Ryker Jones; brother-in-law, Bill Metcalfe of Des Moines; 2 step-sons, Michael Venz and wife Judy of Rochester, Minn. and Larry Venz of Mason City; three step grandchildren, Kathryn Ohm, Robert and David Venz; three step great grandchildren.
    Dale is preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Ellen and second wife, Lucille; daughter, Lynn Brockman and sister, Corene Metcalfe.

Mary O’Connor

    Mary "Myrtle" O'Connor, 88, formerly of 307 7th NE, Rockford, who died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.  
    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Monday, Feb. 9, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell. Officiating will be the Rev. James Dubert. Visitation was held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart Parish Center. A parish wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the center. Interment will be next to her husband at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, Rockwell.     Mary Myrtle was born on March 17, 1920 in rural Rockford, Iowa, the youngest child of five to John and Millie “McElroy” Paulus. She was baptized, received her first communion, was confirmed and married at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. She attended country school and then Rockford High School. She lived her entire life in the Rockford, Cartersville, and Rockwell areas. In 1997 she moved into Rockford from Cartersville. On Feb. 3, 1937 she was united in marriage to Richard “Dick” T. O’Connor at Holy Name. They spent 64 years as husband and wife until Dick’s death on Dec. 19, 2001. Even though she considered herself a housewife, homemaker, and mom she spent many years helping her husband with their trucking business. She enjoyed watching TV but didn’t do it often because she was always busy with baking, cooking, tending her vegetable and flower gardens and doing embroidery work. There was always time to spend with family and visiting with friends and neighbors. She was a hard worker and had little time to sit and relax with her growing family. She also volunteered at the nursing home with their bingo games. While living in Cartersville, she was a member of the St. John’s Guild.
    Those thankful in sharing Myrtle’s life include her four children and spouses, John T. “Jack” and Cleo O’Connor, Rudd; Jerry and Maxine O’Connor, Mason City; Karen and Bob Dow, Rockford; and Mary Ann and Roger Martzahn, Greene; eighteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, and seven great great grandchildren, one sister-in-law Lenore Alger, Spencer  and a special friend who considered her a mom Johannah “Smith” Guttroph, along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
    Her parents, husband, one brother Jake Paulus, three sisters Minnie Heinzerling, Louise Murphy, Catharine Dougherty, two grandchildren Cathy Ann and Melissa O’Connor preceded her in death.

Elda Rodamaker

    Elda Rodamaker, 94, of Clarksville, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, from natural causes.
    Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the First United Church of Christ – Pleasant Valley with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery both in Clarksville.

Muriel A. Ratka

    Muriel A. Ratka, 75, of New Hampton, died on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Rochester, Minn.
    Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with Pastor James Grabitskeofficiating.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City with Andrew Ratka, Aaron Ratka, Derek Collyard, David J. Grove, Tom Greiner, Randy Jones and Dave Cavanaughserving as casket bearers.  Honorary casket bearers include Ryan Heilman, Jay Grove, Mike Montanez and Jeff Martsching.

    Muriel Anne (Grove) Ratka was born on Oct. 17, 1933, to Laurence and Ella (Sharley) Grove in New Hampton. She attended school in New Hampton and graduated from New Hampton High School. After her graduation Muriel moved to Des Moines and worked for Younkers Department Store as a clerk. On April 12, 1953, Muriel was united in marriage to Richard E. Ratka at the Congregational United Church of Christ in New Hampton. The couple eventually settled in Charles City, where she was employed by Sperry Transportation Company and later was employed at First Security Bank and Trust until her retirement.
    Muriel enjoyed playing cards, cooking, sports, reading, going to casinos and especially spending time with her friends and family. Muriel was very involved with the Carnegie Cultural Center in New Hampton and volunteered at the local food shelf.  She was an active member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.
    Muriel is survived by her two children, Richard (Linda Jorgensen) Ratka Jr. and Anne (Dan) Heilman; three grandsons, Andrew Ratka, Aaron Ratka and Ryan Heilman; two brothers, Donald (Jane) Grove of Elkader and David (Leah) Grove of Comstock, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Richard Eugene Ratka Sr. on Oct. 12, 2005.

Alvin W. Klunder

    Funeral Services for Alvin W. Klunder, 94, of Greene will be 10:30 a.m. , Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at St. Peter Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

    Alvin William Klunder was born April 20, 1914, near Clarksville in Fremont Twp, Butler Co., a son of Ernest and Melusine (Mueller) Klunder and died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

    Joseph Barrett, 76, of Charles City, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
    Funeral services for Joseph Barrett will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.  The Reverend Carl Ries of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

    Joseph Charles Barrett was born on May 6, 1932, at Nashua, the son of William and Elizabeth (Churchill) Barrett. On April 9, 1976, he was united in marriage to Janice Taft at Charles City. He was employed with Salsbury Laboratories and later, Ryder as an over-the-road truck driver. His interests included working on cars and riding his Harley.
    Living family members include his wife, Jan Barrett of Charles City; six children: Rhonda (Phil) Neely of Bluffton, S.C., Jake (Lori) Kummer, Carla Kummer, Teresa Kummer, Don (Shelley) Koebrick and Charles Barrett, all of Charles City; 13 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and may nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Shirley Barrett, Joann Barrett, Jane Walton, and Pat Reis; and a brother, Jack Barrett.

Anna Mae Nauman

    Anna Mae Nauman, 77, of Floyd, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
    Funeral services for Anna Mae Nauman will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Mr. Jeffery D. Wood, Elder of the Cedar Falls Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

    Anna Mae Wood Nauman was born March 2, 1931, in Bassett, the daughter of Leon and Freda (Idler) Wood. She attended school in rural Bassett. On Nov. 6, 1955, she was united in marriage to Bernard Nauman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Anna Mae was employed at Comp Systems as a cook for 19 years. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her interests included ceramics, camping, sewing, going to the trailer, helping at the V.F.W., Cody Bear’s Cave and spending time with family and friends.
    Living family members include her three children: Linda Nauman of Floyd, Rick (Mary) Nauman of Charles City and Connie (Ron) Niemeyer of Nashua; five grandchildren: Nichole (Nick) Oelberg, Melissa (Brandon) Brown, Kaleb Nauman, Casey Niemeyer and Kara Niemeyer; five great grandchildren: Mariah, Taylor, Gunner, Katlin and Levi; two sisters: Doris Anderson of Fertile and Marie (Bud) Hennick of Charles City; two brothers: Owen (Betty) Wood of Waterloo and Leland (Joyce) Wood of Hanlontown; a sister-in-law, Avis Wood of Rockford; and many nieces and nephews.

Alvin W. Klunder

    Funeral Services for Alvin W. Klunder, 94, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. , Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at St. Peter Lutheran Church . Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

    Alvin William Klunder was born April 20, 1914, near Clarksville, in Fremont Twp, Butler Co., a son of Ernest and Melusine (Mueller) Klunder and died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. He received his education in the Fremont Twp rural schools. As a young man he worked at John Deere.
    He was united in marriage to Dorothy Steere on June 13, 1941, at Zion Lutheran Church in Macon, Mo. Alvin began farming for himself which he continued to do throughout his life retiring in 1989. Alvin enjoyed his farm, mowing, tying quilts and cruising around the country in his pickup visiting family and friends. His greatest joy was his family and he will always be remembered as a loving and giving dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.
    Living family members include: his children: Richard (Rose) Klunder of Greene, Jim (Joyce) Klunder of Ventura, Judy(Richard) Laube of Charles City and Patty Meek of Ackley; 18 grandchildren: Kelly (Rafael) Morales, Brook (Kris) Klunder, Cameron Klunder, Darin (Shelley) Klunder, Kara (Jim) Trotter, Jimmy (Susie) Klunder, Joe (Tatia) Klunder, Jayne(Phil) Zwanziger, Jennifer Klunder, Jason (Autumn) Klunder, Justin (Nikki) Klunder, Tim (Christy) Laube, Tom (Jeannie) Laube, Trinity Laube, Ty Laube, Jamie (Jamie) Meek, Brandie Meek and Dustie Meek, 36 great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and Tabby, Also surviving are two sisters, Arlene Klunder of Clarksville and Gladys Stobbe of Clarksville, along with several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
    Alvin was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; sisters: Lela Wedeking, Meta Kolb and Esther in infancy; five brothers: Otto Klunder, Ernest Klunder, William Klunder, Harvey Klunder and Ewald Klunder, as well as son-in-law Jim Meek.

Dennis Lee Bonwell

    Dennis Lee Bonwell 56, of 407 West Main, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
    Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 16, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake. Burial took place in Riverton Cemetery, Charles City.

    Dennis Lee Bonwell was born Dec. 13, 1952, in Charles City, the son of Donald and Dorthy (Usher) Bonwell. He graduated in 1971 from Charles City High School, While in school he excelled in football, wrestling, track, and baseball.
Denny was united in marriage to the love of his life and high school sweetheart Cherri Bunn on Sept. 3, 1971; to this union two children were born, Camrean and Jodi. As a young man Denny worked at John Deere and White Farm. He began his career with Fareway in 1980, at the Charles City store, retiring in 2002, as the Meat Market Manager in the Clear Lake store. After retiring, Denny was always looking for new business adventures which included opening Lake Liquors in Clear Lake in 1999. He managed the VFW in Clear Lake and later opened the Sundown Bar and Grill in Hanlontown in 2004.
    Denny loved traveling, golfing, coon hunting and fishing with his brothers, and was an avid sports enthusiast who was always rooting for the “winning team.” His greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Denny greatly enjoyed being social with his friends at the VFW and Rookies in Clear Lake.
    Denny was very active in the North Iowa Shrine, Masonic Lodge, Mason City, where he reached Worshipful Master in 1998; he was a member of the Scottish rite and the Royal Order of the Jesters.  One of Denny’s greatest accomplishments was sponsoring a young boy into the Shriners Hospital.
    Denny is survived by his wife, Cherri Bonwell, Fertile; children, Camrean Bonwell and fiancé Loretta Oelkers, of Mason City, Jodi (Mark) Bergan of League City, Texas; grandchildren Hailey Bonwell and Jack and Theodore Bergan; three brothers, four sisters, three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law; along with several nieces and nephews.
    Denny is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Dorthy Bonwell; a sister, Cheri Cleveland; brother, Jim Bonwell; nieces Shelly and Rhonda; and one nephew, Danny.

Newell McIntyre

    Newell McIntyre, 82, of  West Union died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette of age-related causes.
    Services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at United Methodist Church in West Union, with Pastor Scott Kober officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery.
Newell McIntyre was born Dec. 5, 1926, to William and Agnes (Sellers) McIntyre on a farm near Hawkeye. He graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1944 and entered the U.S. Army in 1945. 
    Newell married Verla Benson on Feb. 24, 1952, in St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Elgin. They lived in West Union, where Newell co-managed a DX Gas Service Station on Highway 115.  Newell also worked for Doscher Implement, Dale Upham Construction and Riley’s Construction, finally retiring in 1989.  He was a member of the American Legion, the United Methodist Church, and he was a wood carver with a passion for the outdoors.  Newell was a quiet man who loved his family and remained close to them until the end.  He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by those who loved him.
    Living family members include his wife, Verla of West Union; children: two sons, Nick (Marjorie) McIntyre of Eldorado and John (Tami) McIntyre of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Julie (Walter) Ash of Charles City and Holly (Ron) Heying of West Union; four sisters: Lucille Reeder, Shirley Smith, Jeanette Saboe and Adeline Westendorf, all of West Union; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and mother-in-law Ruby Baechler of Fayette.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Agnes (Sellers) McIntyre.

Phyllis Melcher

    Phyllis Melcher, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.
    Funeral services for Phyllis Melcher will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Robert Holdorf, of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the West Saint Charles Cemetery rural Charles City.

    Phyllis Eileen Anderson Dunkin Melcher was born Dec. 5, 1922, at Rush City, Minn., the daughter of Harry and Aleda (Lund) Anderson. The family moved to Minneapolis, Minn. while she was an infant. She grew up in Minneapolis where she graduated from South High School. Phyllis attended and was confirmed at the Elim Covenant Church. Following high school graduation she worked in Saint Paul for the Montgomery Ward Company in their billing department. On May 10, 1942, she was united in marriage to Harold W. Dunkin. Harold was killed on Dec. 19, 1944, during World War II and is buried in Saint Avold, France. Their daughter Judy was born to this union. It was on Aug. 14, 1947, that Phyllis was married to Oscar Melcher at her parent’s home in Minneapolis. To this marriage two sons, Lloyd and Gayle and a daughter, Darcy were born. Oscar and Phyllis began their married life on the Melcher family farm, which has been a family farm since the land was purchased in 1868. Phyllis enjoyed being a farm wife. She was also an experienced seamstress, sewing clothes for her family and making wedding gowns for both of her daughters. After her daughter Darcy started junior high school, Phyllis went to work in the kitchen of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. There she was responsible for the making of salads for the patients and the hospital cafeteria. Phyllis was a member of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church where she taught both Sunday and Bible School. She was also an active member in the WSCS and the United Methodist Women. Her interests included collecting thimbles and dolls. She enjoyed her many friends, attending the Happy Hour Club, Saint Charles Homemakers, 500 Club, Thursday Coffee Group, Sew and Sews and the South High Alumni. The past two years Phyllis resided at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage and Cedar Health in Charles City. At both facilities, Phyllis received loving attention and care. Phyllis will be remembered as a mother devoted to her children and grandchildren.
    Living family members include four children, Judith (Robert) “Corky” Coyne of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lloyd Melcher of Floyd, Gayle (Joy) Melcher of Osage and Darcy (Tracy) Mullenbach of Osage; seven grandchildren, Kristian (Jaenette) Coyne, Nathan (Kelly), Emily and Jordan Melcher, and Becca, Hanna and Kyle Mullenbach; two sisters, Doris Sharp of Charles City and Joyce Droel of Northfield, Minn.; and a brother, Leslie (Lorraine) Anderson of Minneapolis, Minn.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harold Dunkin and Oscar Melcher (Nov. 8, 1991); and two brothers, Wendell and Willard Anderson.

Lyle D. Marson

    Lyle D. Marson, 71, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Charles City, died Monday, Feb.16, 2009, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer.
    Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

    Born June 11, 1937, in Charles City to Roy and Helen (Miller) Marson, Lyle graduated from Charles City Senior High School and was employed by A.Y. McDonald for 19 years and then as a purchasing agent for Nelson and Hagy for 25 years, retiring in 2003. On Dec. 23, 1955, he was united in marriage to Charlene Matson, his wife of 53 years, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City
    He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.                        
    Living family members include his wife, Charlene Marson of  Cedar Falls; daughters Kathy (Dan) Barfels and Nadine (Keith) Konigsmark,  both of Cedar Falls; son Corey Marson,  Waterloo; six grandchildren: Kristen (Mark) Oliver of Waterloo, Ashley (Aaron) Prieksat of Norwalk, Achelle Garris of Rocky Mount, N.C.; Kyle and Kaylene Konigsmark of Cedar Falls and Alec Marson, Gilbertville; three great grandchildren: Maxwell Oliver of Waterloo, Hannah Garris and Lindsey Chamberlain, both of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two sisters, Alice Funte of  Charles City and Evelyn Noble of Mason City; and a brother, Don Marson of  Mason City.

Nora Martin, 70, of Ionia, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Nora Zimmerman Martin was born Nov. 21, 1938, at New Holland, Penn., the daughter of David K. and the late Leah (Zimmerman) Martin.  On Dec. 3, 1959, Nora was united in marriage to John R. Martin, Sr., at New Holland, Penn.  In 1996 they moved to Ionia from New Holland.
Nora is survived by her husband, John R. Martin, Sr. of Ionia; 11 children: Anna Mary (Daniel) Hoover of New York, Alma (Laurence) Reiff of Penn., Nora (Harlan) Zimmerman of Iowa, Lucy (Ivan) Zimmerman of Penn., Arlene (Maynard) Zimmerman of Penn., Emma (John) Martin of Iowa, Louella (Harold) Zimmerman of New York, John (Anna) Martin, Jr. of Iowa, Vera Mae (Alvin) Reiff of Iowa, Leon (Christine) Martin of Iowa and Elvin Martin of Iowa; 80 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Emma Burkholder of Iowa; her father David K. and step mother, Lena Zimmerman Martin of Penn.; five half brothers: Aaron (Anna) Martin, Ammon (Ella) Martin, Elam (Mabel) Martin, Lloyd (Annetta) Martin and David (Marlene) Martin all of Penn;  three half sisters, Esther (John) Zimmerman, Vera (Alvin) Zimmerman and Alma (Elam) Hurst, all of Pennsylvania.

    Loretta Schneider, 88, of Mason City, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
    A funeral mass for Loretta will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth Street SE, Mason City, with Reverend Craig Steimel officiating.     Loretta Schneider was born on May 19, 1920, in Greene, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Albrecht) DeMar. Loretta attended and received her education in the Greene Community School. She was united in marriage to William W. Schneider on July 2, 1938, in Mason City. He preceded her in death in 1959, after a tragic airplane accident. Loretta helped her husband in his business endeavors. After her husband’s death in 1959, Loretta devoted her life to raising and loving her children. Loretta also enjoyed crocheting, sewing and going out to eat.
    Loretta’s faith was very important to her and she was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

    Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; two granddaughters, Tina Marie and Mary Sue Albright; and six brothers and sisters.

Elaine R. (Koenigsfeld) Menges

    Elaine R. (Koenigsfeld) Menges, 72, of 2060 S. Kentucky Ave. Mason City, made her journey home, into the arms of her Lord and Savior, on Feb. 23. 2009. She was surrounded by her loving family at Hospice of North Iowa.
    Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday Feb. 26, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, Iowa with Rev. Craig E. Stimel of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
    Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel with a Rosary at 5 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Elaine’s family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa.
Elaine entered this world on Feb. 2, 1937, on the Rose Naumann farmstead rural Roseville, the daughter of Daniel F. and Mabel Mary (Osier) Koenigsfeld. As a child she attended Roseville grade school, Immaculate Conception Academy, Dubuque and when her family moved to Mason City in the early 50’s she attended St. Joseph Catholic School.
    On Dec. 16, 1953, she was united in marriage to Wilbert Chandler Haase Jr. From this marriage her five children were born. In 1977, she married Joe Menges.
Beside the task of raising five children she also elected to work outside the home. A few of her jobs were Birdsalls Ice Cream, United Home Bank, Armour, Mason City School System and was a bingo worker at Mason City Senior Center. Elaine’s energy, drive and work ethic was inspiring to all who knew her.
    The happiest times for Elaine were when she got together with her grandchildren. She was a beloved daughter, cherished sister, devoted wife and a hero to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be forever missed and never forgotten.
    Those left to carry on her goodness are her five children: Kenneth Haase of Broken Arrow, Okla., Daniel Haase of Mason City, Lynne Evans and her husband Paul of Etowah, N.C., William Haase and his wife Kimberly of Mason City, and Kimberly Knight and her husband Mike, of Mt. Horeb, Wis.; 13 grandchildren: Christopher M. Haase, Courtney Haase, Chance Haase, Justin Haase, SSGT Bryan Evans, USAF, LCPL Brett Evans, USMC, Melanie Evans, Molly Evans, Christopher J. Haase, Crystal Kramer, Ryan Gerow, Matthew Swinton and Michael Swinton; two great-grandchildren, Christopher M. Haase II and Aaron Kramer; three brothers: Al Ruzicka and his wife Nancy of Bloomington, Minn., Stephen Koenigsfeld and his wife Mary of Marble Rock and Peter Koenigsfeld and his wife Sharon, of Nora Springs; four sisters: Cecilia Holzer of Charles City, Dorothy Streit and her husband Nick, of LaValle, Wis., Mary Craven and her husband Pete of Mason City, and Bernadette Hennagir of Mason City.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Genevieve Haus, JoAnne Frein and Theresa Farrington.

Linda Witz Baldwin

    Linda Witz Baldwin, 50, of Davenport passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
    Services were held Thursday, Feb. 19, at Runge Mortuary. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery..
    Linda was born Feb. 5, 1959, in Davenport.
    Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Greg; her daughter, Heather Baldwin and fiance Dewayne Schmidt; grandchildren Andrew and Hayden; a sister, Oudress, Phyllis and Joan; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dennis and Sue Baldwin of Davenport and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Janice and Randy Gilbert of Floyd; and mother-in-law Bernie Baldwin of Charles City.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother.

Roger Jay Squier

    Roger Jay Squier, 93, of 2060 South Kentucky Ave., Mason City, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at the Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living facility, Mason City.
    A Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb.27, at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th Street NW, Mason City, with Pastor Steve Hansen officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
    Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, and also one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
     Memorials may be directed to the family in memory of Roger.
    Roger was born on April 6, 1915, in Rockford, the son of George and Olga (Krieger) Squier. He married Margaret (Brinkman) on Oct. 2, 1938 in Greene, and to this union four children were born. Roger drove semi truck from Des Moines Transportation/Mayflower for many years. He also worked as a hired man on different farms in the area, then worked maintenance at the Holiday Inn until he fully retired when he was 75 years old.
    In his spare time Roger enjoyed fishing, playing cards, going to the casino, making crafts for the children at the church along with playing Santa Claus and watching NASCAR races on T.V. He also loved participating in the many activities at Kentucky Ridge, where he had lived since May. Roger was a member of Teamsters and Grace United Methodist Church.
     He is survived by his wife Margaret, Mason City; his children: Patricia (Dale) Straw of Waterloo, Jerry Squier of Chandler, Ariz., and Lorene (Lowell) Johnson of Rock Falls; his grandchildren: Gary (Karen) Johnson of Mason City, Sherry (Andrew) Herman of Lakeland, Fla., Dawn (Jeff) Nielsen of Waterloo, Michael Straw of Waterloo, Sandra Pierce of Waterloo, Roger Pierce of Waterloo, Tina (Terry) Wolfer of Phoenix, Ariz., Tiffany (Ryan) Kortman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Terry Boehnke of Chandler, Ariz.; numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; his siblings, Burr (Marvelle) Squier of Rudd, Inez Bendickson of  Mason City, Bonnie (Bernie) Bitzen of Minnesota, Gary (LaVonne) Squier, Minn., Phyllis Brundell of South Dakota, Sandy (Don) Schulte and Duane (Kim) Squier, all of Minnesota.
     Roger was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Sharon; grandsons David Pierce, Kevin Pierce and Ryan Pierce; his granddaughter, Tammy Folwler; and his siblings: Truman Squier, Irene Medlin, Shirley Sell, Wendell Squier, Dolores Williams, Marlene Stumm and Donna Jean Gnasdoskey.

    Marian Wilkens, 86, of Nashua died Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
    Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Parkersburg.

    Kenneth D. Glandon, 79, of Charles City, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
    Funeral services for Kenneth Glandon will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City.

    Mildred M. Hildebrand, 78, of 700 West Ridgeway, Apt. 101, Cedar Falls, IA died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.

June B. Gist

    June B. Gist, 89, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

June Boneta Wiltse Gist was born July 19, 1919, at Charles City, the only child of Herbert Dorwin and Minnie (Stewart) Wiltse. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1937. From 1937 to 1940 she worked for an insurance agency and from 1940 to 1952 she was employed by the Oliver Corporation. On Oct. 11, 1952, she was united in marriage to William W. Gist, an engineer with the Oliver Corporation. The two of them moved to Battle Creek, Mich. where they both continued to work for Oliver until 1955 when the contract with Boeing Airplane Company ended and they moved to the Twin Cities.
    Bill died Sept. 13, 1971, and June remained in the Twin Cities until 1988. She attended the University of Minnesota, worked 10 years (until the company was moved to Chicago) as Secretary to the President and chairman of the Board of Rap-In-Wax Paper Company and spent her last 22 plus years as Executive Vice President and President of two well known Twin City firms. June returned to Charles City on Nov. 17, 1988. She has served as a Hospice volunteer, a member of the school board, on the Superintendent’s Advisory Board, the Excellence in Education Foundation and the Community Revitalization Committee. She also served as a Teen Center volunteer. She was a member of the Moose Lodge, 19th Amendment Society, Charles City Arts Council, Senior Center, Historical Society and St. Anthony’s Circle.
    June has no living relatives.
    She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
