Marcel ‘Andy’ Bouillon

    Marcel “Andy” Bouillon, 89, of Charles City, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.
    Funeral services for Andy Bouillon will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Pastor Jason Boyd, of the Faith Bible Chapel, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.
    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. on Monday. Visitation will continue Tuesday an hour prior to the service.
    Marcel Andree’ Bouillon was born September 29, 1919, in Paris, France, the son of Maurice and Marie (Oltman) Bouillon. He received his education at Galt. On Sept. 19, 1953, he was united in marriage to Lois Carpenter.  They later divorced.  Andy worked at the Greene Rendering Plant and as a farm laborer.  His interests included playing bingo, cards and pool, watching baseball and taking gambling bus trips.  Andy always looked forward to sharing his life with his family.
    Living family members include a son, Thomas (Sandi) Bouillon of Nora Springs; four daughters, Thelma (Steve) Neisen of Mason City, Tammie (Paul) Garber of Nora Springs, Toni Hill of Stewartville, Minn. and Tina (Howard) Iverson of Charles City; a step son, Terrance Carpenter of Rockford; and a step daughter, Teresa (Kenny) Staudt of Marble Rock; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a sister, Norma (Harold) Beyer of Dows.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tim Bouillon; two brothers, Emil and Robert Bouillon; and a sister, Marie Bouillon.

Brian K. Allen

    Brian K. Allen, 50, of rural New Hampton, died April 28, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family.
    Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Shirley Hoffmann Will officiating. Gail Allison served as organist and the church choir led the congregation in the singing of “Amazing Grace” and “Here I Am Lord.” Isaac Holmes and Preston Herrmann were the candle lighters. Mark and Vickie Rhea were the host and hostess.
    Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery with David Isenhower, Jim Allison, Harvey Richards, Don Harty, Tom Myers and Rod Reicks serving as pallbearers.

Brian Kenneth Allen was born Jan. 22, 1959, in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Darrell and Thelma (Means) Allen. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1977.
    Following graduation, Brian began a life-long career as an over the road truck driver. He was united in marriage to Julie Brandenburg on Sept. 8, 1984 at Fredericksburg. They were blessed with a son, Justin.
    Brian enjoyed trucking cross country, especially the times when his family could travel with him. He loved being a father to Justin and special family friend Tiffany. He enjoyed being in his shop with Justin, as they worked on the “Firebird.” He also enjoyed NASCAR. Brian was a member and leader in the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.
    He is survived by his wife, Julie and son, Justin; his mother, Thelma Allen of New Hampton; three brothers, Gary Allen and special friend, Barbara of Boise, Idaho, Dean Allen and his wife, Monica of Red Bluff, Calif. and Darwin Allen and his wife, Deb of Ionia; one sister, Karen Montgomery and her husband, Don of Burlingame, Kan.; special family friend, Tiffany Harnisch of Fredericksburg; his church family and many friends.
    Brian was preceded in death by his father, Darrell Allen.

Collette Marie Rogers

    Collette Marie Rogers, 83, of Orchard, died Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at the Orchard Cemetery at Orchard. Visitation will be from 4-7:30 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 7 p.m.
    Collette was born February 15, 1926, in rural Alta Vista, Iowa, to Anthony “Andy” and Mabel (Smith) Rennier. She graduated from Floyd High School in 1944. Collette married Hilbert W. Rogers on Sept. 2, 1947, at I.C. Church in Charles City. They farmed in the Floyd and Orchard area from 1947 to 2006. She was a member of the Orchard Legion Auxiliary, Osage V.F.W. Auxiliary, Saint Theresa Circle, Sacred Heart Guild and was a nursing home volunteer and worked on the Orchard Chit-Chat Newspaper. Collette had many friends and neighbors that she enjoyed visiting with daily. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
    Collette is survived by two sons, Rick (Darlys) Rogers of Osage, Monte (Pat) Rogers of Orchard, two daughters, Terri (Ron) Muhlenbruck of Orchard, Kathy (Jim) Orsland of Ankeny, nine grandchildren: Angie Boehmer, Jennifer Tresch, Beth Olson, Nick Rogers,  Jeff Rogers, Chad Halbach, Lora Williams, Jake Orsland and Kaylene Orsland; and twelve great-grandchildren.                               
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hilbert “Hilly” in 2007; and an infant brother, Vincent.

Earl Marvin Zieman

    Earl Marvin Zieman, 84, Rockwell, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at his home.
    A funeral service for Earl will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the First Wesleyan Church, 913 South Main Street, Charles City, with Pastor Matthew Hoveland and Pastor Dennis Bachman officiating.  Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126-3rd Street NE, Mason City. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.
    Earl Marvin Zieman was born on August 31, 1924, in Meservey, the son of John and Tina (Smith) Zieman. He received his education in the Rockford Community Schools, graduating from Rockford High School. Earl farmed and raised Black Angus beef cattle all his life in the Rockford area until his retirement.
    Earl enjoyed Bluegrass music, going to auctions, sale barns and thrashing.
    He was a member of the Wesleyan Church and was a former member of the church council in Rudd.
    Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Edna Zieman of Rockwell; his son, Dan Zieman of Rockwell; grandchildren, Jesse and Jacob Zieman of Rockwell, Justin and Alex Morris of Wake Forrest, NC, and Mindy Zieman of Lake Mills, several nieces and nephews; as well as other extended family members and friends.
    Earl was preceded in death by his parents; son, Marvin Zieman; brother, Lloyd Zieman; two sisters, Wilma Sherburn and Stella Grube; brothers-in-law, Paul Grube and Harold Sherburn; and sister-in-law, Janet Zieman.

Thelma Bartlett

    Thelma Bartlett, 98, of Rockwell, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
    A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 9, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd Street SE, Mason City.  Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Township Cemetery near Burchinal.  Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., prior to the service on Saturday. 
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Iowa.  Condolences may be shared with the family on the funeral home website at www.Fullertonfh.com.

Rex D. Fairholm Sr.

    Rex D. Fairholm Sr., 65, of Nashua, died Saturday evening, May 2, 2009 at his home in Nashua.
    Rex has donated his body to The Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minnesota.
Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua, with Pastor Nate Frazee officiating.

    Rex Dean Fairholm Sr. was born Oct. 13, 1943, at Waterloo, the son of Don H. and Lola (Reed) Fairholm. He spent his youth in the Evansdale area and graduated in 1960 from East High School in Waterloo. He joined the Iowa National Guard while he was a senior in high school and served for eight years.
    Rex was united in marriage to Marilyn Ungs on April 11, 1964, at Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo. To this union four children were born. When Rex and Marilyn were first married they traveled the United States as they went where Rex’s job with Pole Sprayers took them. They traveled to 42 states before settling down in the Cedar Rapids area to start their family. Rex worked for Collins Radio as a machinist, Steitzer Auto and Rapids Chevrolet as a salesman. He then started his own carpet business but eventually went to Orkin Exterminating where he retired after 12 years as district manager for the Kansas City district. Rex and Marilyn moved back to Iowa and in 1986 they started their own pizza business, Bestline Pizza in Nashua. Their children and grandchildren also helped in the pizza business. Everyone recognized “Big Red” his old beat-up red pickup he drove. Rex and Marilyn closed Bestline in October of 2005 because of health issues. Rex enjoyed having the family around, saying that is was never dull around our place and it wasn’t! He enjoyed watching westerns and the Hawkeye games. He enjoyed the scenery on the “great river road trips” in the fall. Rex was a coin collector. He liked to go to auctions, he could always find something he needed. Rex loved to tinker and fix things and really enjoyed making something work again. He enjoyed the casinos, playing the nickel machines (never betting the max cause he could win on one nickel), he never won much but he had fun. Rex always said you have to have fun while you can, and he did.
    Rex is survived by his wife, Marilyn; three sons, Rex (Karon) Fairholm, Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Daniel Fairholm of Charles City and Donald (Brandy) Fairholm of Greene; one daughter, Angela (Jon) Day of Charles City; three sisters, Doneta (Bill) Etter of Wisconsin, Twilah Steiles and Kalha Krueger both of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Lola; and a sister, Yvonne Bowden.

Margaret Fods Waudby Hargrave

    Margaret Hargrave, 92, died April 20, 2009, at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, Calif.
    A memorial Mass was held April 22 at Saint Catherine Laboure’ Catholic Church, where she had been a member of Santa Teresa Guild. She donated her body to science. After study at the University of California, San Diego, is completed, her remains will be scattered at sea.
    Margaret was born in Steele County, Minn., on March 22, 1917, to Olaf and Alice Fods.  She attended Charles City Schools and graduated from Charles City High School in 1935, where she had been piano accompanist to music groups and earned teacher certification.
    Margaret married Lawrence Brooke Waudby on July 7, 1935. He died June 29, 1936. She then married George Cornelius Hargrave Nov. 20, 1937.  They moved to California in 1960. He died Nov. 2, 1969.
    In San Diego, she earned an Associate of Arts degree in her 70s from San Diego City College and studied at the University of California, San Diego, where she volunteered as a costume seamstress in the drama department. Reading and playing Scrabble were her favorite pastimes.
    Survivors include three daughters: Jo Waudby Sahn of Arnold, Calif., Judy Hargrave Siver of Hazelhurst, Wis., and Anne Hargrave Anderson of LasVegas, Nev.; two sisters, Kathryn E. Johnson of Charles City and Esther Mohring of Edmond, Okla.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
    She was proceeded in death by two sons, Cornelius and Alfred, her husbands and her parents.

Rex Fairholm Sr.

    Rex D. Fairholm Sr., 65, of Nashua died Saturday evening, May 2, 2009 at his home in Nashua.

Alice Hauser

    Alice Hauser, 96, of Charles City, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.
    Funeral services for Alice Hauser will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Phil Corr will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-7 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.
Alice Emma Sheldon Hauser was born Aug. 9, 1912, at Charles City, the daughter of Ernest and Faith (Snyder) Sheldon. She graduated from the Charles City High School and National College of Education in Evanston, Ill. Alice taught kindergarten for several years before her marriage to Carl Hauser on June 25, 1936, at Holcom Springs, rural Floyd. Over the years Alice was a very active member of the First Congregational Church where she belonged to the Women’s Fellowship, taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the choir, played the hand bells and enjoyed the Tuesday morning Bible study. Other memberships in which she held leadership rolls included, Daughters of the American Revolution, Alden Sears chapter, Pythian Sisters, Charles City Women’s Club, City Improvement Association, American Association of University Women and the Chapter CY P.E.O. For 25 years Alice was a devoted Girl Scout leader, trainer, served on the board and was known as a “Nature Nut” at Camp Christie. Alice will be remembered for her pecan “sticky” rolls, German kaffee kuchen, homemade ice cream, flower arranging and sewing for her family. Family was always very important to Alice, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she enjoyed every opportunity to share her life with them.
    Living family members include a daughter, Carole (Tom) Allen of Charles City; a son, Carl “Kip” (Judy) Hauser of Charles City; six grandchildren: Laurie (Michael) Vinyon, Rebecca (Patrick) Black, Stephen (Laurie) Hauser, Kristi (Steve) Booth, Bob (Kelley) Allen and Scot (Amy) Allen; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Allen (Betty Anne) Sheldon of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister, Carol Foley of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; a nephew and two nieces.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on July 31, 2001, and a nephew.
    Memorials may be directed to the First Congregation Church or TLC Learning Center.

David Dean Allen

    Funeral services for David Dean Allen, 42, of 10596 Franklin Ave., Dougherty, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 11, 2009, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
    David Dean Allen died Thursday, May 7, 2009, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident in Franklin County.
    Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., followed by a Scripture Service, Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene. Visitation will continue one hour before services Monday ,at the church.

Charles W. Beck

    Charles W. Beck, age 60, of Zumbrota died on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
    A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday, May 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Zumbrota with Father Tim Dolan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with casketbearers Andy Eggerichs, Barry Kruse, Bob Tittrington, Brian Buck, Ken Lother and Merle Johnson. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, May 10, from 1-5 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home – Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Monday one hour prior to the mass at the church.
    Charles William Beck was born on Feb. 4, 1949, in Charles City, to Johnnie and Wilma (nee Ebding) Beck. He grew up in Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1967. He attended the Iowa State University and in 1970 started working for Morton Buildings. On July 14, 1973, he married Kathy Ricke in Easton, Minn. From 1973 until 1989, Chuck farmed with his brother Bob in rural Nashua. While farming, Chuck continued to work for Morton Buildings and was currently working for Morton’s at the time of his death. In 1990, Chuck and Kathy moved to Zumbrota.
Chuck enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family, gardening, golfing and fishing.
    Chuck is survived by his wife, Kathy; three sons, Jason Beck of Oronoco, Doug (Megan) Beck of Goodhue and Mike (Rachel) Beck of Zumbrota; six grandchildren: Gabe, Joey, Tyler, Melanie, Nathan and Erin Beck; his mother, Wilma Beck of Nashua; two sisters, Myrna (Don) Greene of Eden Prairie and Jeanne (Gary) Olson of Nashua; and one brother, Bob (Joyce) Beck of Nashua.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie.
    The family suggests memorials to St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Dorothy Overturf

    Dorothy Overturf, 88, of Rockwell, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
    Memorial services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the United Methodist Church, 303 Monroe Street East, in Rockwell.  Burial will follow in Harlan Cemetery in Dumont.  A visitation and lunch will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church prior to the service.

Robert ‘Bob’ Monroe

    Robert Gates Monroe, 90, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Charles City, died Friday, May 8, 2009.
    A Celebration of Life will be May 13, at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, and at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Church, Charles City. Visitation will be May 12, from 5-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial in Cedar Rapids. Private family burial services will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City at a later date.
    Bob was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Charles City, the son of Charles (Jack) and Margaret Monroe. He lived in and graduated from high school in Charles City. Bob graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in Business in 1941, and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He completed pilot and flight training at various Army flight schools in Texas; on May 20, 1942, he received his wings and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. On May 20, Bob also married Ruth Stewart in Lubbock, Texas.  They were stationed in San Antonio and Sabinal, Texas, during World War II, where Bob earned the rank of Captain and trained pilots and was a flight instructor. In 1945 Bob and Ruth moved to Charles City, and in 1946 they opened their own business, Monroe Sporting Goods, which they operated for 30 years.  Bob was also a Charles City Councilman, a Floyd County Supervisor for 13 years and the Mayor of Charles City from 1988-1994.  In 1995 Bob and Ruth moved to Cedar Rapids where they resided at Crystal Estates.  Ruth died on May 14, 2004. On Nov. 11, 2006, Bob married Karen Alexander in Cedar Rapids.
    Bob was very active in community and church activities. He helped organize Little League Baseball, was a YMCA board member, an active member of  the First Congregational Church (choir for over 30 years) and First Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital, a coach, referee and umpire, and was a member of the Elks, Rotary, and American Legion. Bob had his sports radio program, “Sitting In With Bob Monroe” on KCHA for 30 years. He was also named the Charles City Chamber of Commerce ‘Man of the Year.’ Bob was a strong advocate for Charles City; his most notable interests were securing historic preservation and registry status for various Charles City landmarks, especially the Suspension Bridge; the naming of Charles City as “America’s Hometown;” and his work on developing the “Avenue of the Saints” for Charles City and the state. Bob’s interests and talents included sports, music (especially ‘Big Band’), dancing, singing, golf, fishing, hunting, bicycling (riding in RAGBRAI), traveling extensively, Western novels and movies, the Cedar River, bridge, cribbage and people.
Bob’s greatest commitment was his family; he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was always ready for family activities and eager to learn and try new experiences. The grandchildren were fortunate to spend special summer vacations with Grandpa, enjoying canoeing on the Cedar, bicycling, swimming, ice-skating and numerous adventures. Bob was a gift and a blessing to his family and friends. His greatest legacy to his family was his life of integrity as a role model and teacher of character and life’s lessons.
Survivors include his wife Karen Alexander Monroe; two sons, James R. Monroe (Louise) of Des Moines and John C. (Cindy) Monroe of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Linda (Roger) Hoel of Coralville; and three step-daughters, Lisa Alexander, Lauren (Randy) Savell, and Lynda (Pierre) Meunier.  Survivors also include nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren:  Deborah and Jim Dreusicke (Lauren, Anna) and Sarah and Mike Heenan (Nathan, Noah) of Coralville; Kristin Monroe Pei (Marcus, Miles) of  Iowa City; Capt. Andrew and Stephanie Monroe (Nicholas) of Richmond Hill, Ga.; Sgt. Scott and Marie Monroe of Fort Irwin, Calif.; and four children and three grandchildren of Jim and Louise Monroe.
    Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Monroe, his parents, and a brother, Charles Monroe.

Marlys ‘Marlie’ Bethel Laue

    Marlys “Marlie” Bethel Laue, 73, of Greeley, Colo. died May 10, 2009, Mother’s Day, at the North Colorado Medical Center Hospice Inpatient Unit. 
    Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the Allnutt Macy Chapel.  Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 15, at the First Congregational Church.  Interment at Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls, Wisc.
    She was born on March 15, 1936 to Richard H. and Evalyn (Ruble) Meents in River Falls, Wis.  She was educated in the Campus School of Wisconsin State College and graduated from River Falls High School in 1953.  She continued her education at Wisconsin State College (now the University of Wisconsin-River Falls), graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in the fields of Biology, Geology and Library Science.  In later years, she took graduate courses at the University of Northern Colorado and also became certified in elementary education. 
    Music was an important part of Marlie’s life.  She was proficient in piano, clarinet, violin and the antique pump organ.  She received vocal training and in her youth performed at marriage and funeral services as a soloist.  During Marlie’s high school and college years, she was a member of orchestra and several choirs and bands.  She was a former member of the First Congregational Church vocal and bell choirs of Greeley, the Greeley Chorale and the First Congregational Church choir of Charles City.
    On Dec. 22, 1956, she married Donald R. Laue at First United Methodist Church in River Falls.  In the fall of 1957 she began her teaching career as a biology and earth science teacher at Millford, Conn. High School.  She was also employed in the Alumni office at Yale University in New Haven, where her husband attended graduate school.  As Marlie, Don and their family lived in several states, Marlie continued to serve as a substitute teacher in the public school systems in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado and Iowa.  Marlie’s love of research allowed her to help people over her 17 years as a reference librarian at Weld County Library.  She also worked at J.C. Penney, from which she retired in 2004. 
    Marlie and her family moved to Greeley in 1969.  She served as a member of the Accountability and the Family Life Education Curriculum committees in Weld Co. School Dist. #6.  In the early 1970’s she initiated the parent volunteer program at Brentwood Elementary School which was duplicated throughout the District and continues today.  She was active in the American Association of University Women.
    The loves of Marlie’s life were her children and seven grandsons.  She spent the last 20 years attending the sporting events and school activities of her “boys,” never missing an event.
    Marlie is survived by her husband of 52 years, Don; son Richard Laue and wife Kim of Loveland; son Bradley Laue and wife Lauris of Greeley, and daughter Leanne Laue Halsey and husband Steve of Greeley; a brother, Bruce Meents and wife Yvonne of River Falls; grandsons Zach and Brock Laue of Loveland, Matt, Jay and Brian Halsey and Mitchell and Mark Laue, all of Greeley.  She is also survived by sisters-in-law Ann (Laue) Finder and husband Earl of Shoreview, Minn., and Mariann Laue Baker and husband Frank of Fairfax, Va., along with nieces and nephews. 
    She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law Dr. James H. Laue; and a nephew, Mark Meents.

    Marlys Jean Schilling, 63, of Clarksville died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at the Waverly Health Center.

    Marlys Jean Schilling was born Nov. 23, 1945, in Waterloo, the daughter of Lawrence and Gladys (McFadden) Sinnott. She received her education in West Union.
    On Jan. 15, 1961, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, she married Frederick Schilling. To this union four children were born. The couple farmed for many years near Clarksville and Marlys also worked several years at WebMD in Waterloo.
Marlys was a long time member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Pleasant Hill, of Nashua. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities, reading and listening to music. Her family was her greatest joy.
    Marlys is survived by her husband, Frederick; one son, Scott (Doreen) Schilling of Clarksville; three daughters: Jennifer (Michael) Pothast of Shell Rock, Melissa (Dale) Schneider of Denver, Iowa, and Priscilla Schilling of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lyle and Sylvia Schafer of Greene.
    She was preceded in death by her parents.

Alexander “Al” Kloberdanz

    Alexander “Al” Kloberdanz, 81, of Charles City, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
    A funeral Mass for Al Kloberdanz will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass.  Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Cemetery, rural Osage. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-7 p.m. today where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 6 p.m.  Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.
    Alexander Frederick Kloberdanz was born June 10, 1927, in Osage, the youngest of 10 children to John and Rose (Lauer) Kloberdanz. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Al graduated from Osage High School where he was a state champion in wrestling and inducted into the Osage Wrestling Hall of Fame. Following graduation in 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving as Quarter Master First Class on a patrol craft escort stationed in Guam.  Upon his honorable discharge he attended Brown Radio School in Minneapolis, Minn. and served as an announcer for WHOW in Clinton, Ill.  He later graduated in 1952 from the University of Iowa with a Political Science degree.  Al met the love of his life, Mary Lou Hove, in Northwood and they were married on May 2, 1953, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City. They began their life together in Austin, Minn. where Al worked at the Austin Loan Company. His insurance career began at the Osterud Insurance Agency in Rochester, Minn. in 1955.  In 1957, he purchased his own insurance agency in Lakefield, Minn. Al became the director of the Community Chest at Mason City in 1962.  He re-entered the insurance business purchasing an agency in Manchester in 1964.  In July of 1968, Al and his family settled in Charles City where he purchased several small agencies to establish The Insurance Office, Inc. which has remained a family business for over 40 years. Al and Mary enjoyed bike riding, walking, gardening, attending Hawkeye games, spending time at the family farm, trying their luck at casinos and traveling throughout the world. He especially enjoyed his annual family fishing and hunting trips where he was a founding member and Field Commander of S.A.G.E.
    Al is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Kloberdanz of Charles City; five children and their families, Steve Kloberdanz of Marshalltown, Emily and Alex; Brenda (Tom) McGinn of Iowa City, Stephanie and Michael; Bret (SuAnne) Kloberdanz of Charles City, Peter and Adam; Scott (Michelle) Kloberdanz of Johnston, Colby and Alayna; Bob (Amy) Kloberdanz of Charles City, Ellie and Kate; a brother, Johnny (Cassie) Kloberdanz of Osage; two sisters, Katie Arickx and Leona Niddrie both of Osage; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wenzel, Pete and Joe Kloberdanz; and three sisters, Madge Lechman, Rose Marreel and Peggy Gorrell.

    Helen Marie Peterson was born March 22, 1928, in Iowa City the daughter of W. Lloyd and Marie (Miller) Peterson. She attended elementary and high school in Nashua graduating in 1946. She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College for two years.
    She was united in marriage to Wayne F. Peterson Aug. 20, 1948, in Shell Rock. To this union four children were born. They lived in Lohrville for three years, where Helen taught first grade. In 1951, they moved to Nashua and Wayne started his insurance agency. Helen worked as an agent for the company.
    Helen was a member of Jr. Federated Club, Nashua Women’s Club and served as vice-president of the Parent Teachers Association. Helen was a home body, she loved being with and doing things for her family and pets. She loved to garden and travel.
    She is survived by her husband, Wayne Peterson; two sons, Gregory (Deborah) Peterson of Indianola and Dale (Kathleen) Peterson of Clive; a daughter, Patricia (Roger Gigler) McDermott of Nashua; six grandchildren: Jeff (Angie), Alex, Evan and Ann Peterson, David and Scott McDermott; two step-grandchildren, Casey (Amanda) Gigler and Lisa (Terry) Moeller; nine step great-grandchildren and two step great-great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Arthur Peterson of Chicago, Ill., and Glenn (Betty) Peterson of Lincoln, Neb.; along with one sister-in-law, Betty Peterson of Shell Rock.
    Helen was preceded in death by a son, David Peterson; her parents; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.

Duane R. Wegner

    Duane R. Wegner, 54, of 1454 Underwood Avenue in Charles City, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a courageous, five-year battle with cancer.
    A funeral service will be held Friday, May 22, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 Main Street S, in Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.  A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City, and again one hour prior to the service at the church.  Stories, condolences, and thoughts may be shared with the family on the funeral home website at www.Fullertonfh.com.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Duane Wegner Memorial Fund.
    Duane was born on Jan. 24, 1955, in Charles City, the son of Russell and Eileen (Meyer) Wegner.  He graduated from Charles City High School in 1973.  He was united in marriage to Christine Shultz on June 4, 1976 at the Trinity Methodist Church in Charles City.  Duane grew up farming with his family, was then employed with White Farm, and finally worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 24 years.  Duane and Christy also raised dogs and Tennessee walking horses on their farm near Colwell. Duane was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, and also attended First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Tenn.  His Faith was very important to him.  Duane loved the outdoors.  He looked forward to fishing trips in Canada and Tennessee, horseback riding, and 4-wheeling.  Most importantly he enjoyed participating in all the activities his family was involved in.
    Duane was preceded in death by his father, Russell Wegner.
    Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Christine; children, Jesse and Tanner Wegner and McKenzie (Nicholas) Raab; mother, Eileen Wegner; brother, Alan (Karen) Wegner; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Susan Beth Pringle

     Susan Beth Pringle, 64, of De Soto, Wis., died Saturday May 16, 2009, at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis. She was surrounded by her family, and cared for by a special group of people in the Hospice Unit. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Frank Cadwell/Palliative Care, and Hospitce RN Stephanie Lee, your kindness will never be forgotten.
    Susan donated her body to the University of Iowa and there will be no services at this time.
    Susan Beth was born April 25, 1945, to Donald and Florence (Jennings) Palmer in Fairmont, Minn. She was the second youngest of nine children. She met Joe Pringle while peeling potatoes at Denny's Cafe in Garner. They wed March 8, 1963, in Klemme and were married for 46 years. They lived for a time in Charles City and later moved to an acreage in Floyd, where they lived for 15 years. Susan was a beautiful, giving and selfless lady, always working while taking care of her family. He greatest accomplishment was returning to school and becoming a Group Home Supervisor for Comprehensive Systems 9th Street Group Home in Charles City. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, watching birds and being with her cat Sophie. She was the best wife, mother and grandmother a family could ask for. Even through the last few days of her life, she showed us strength and wisdom.
    She is survived by husband Joe Pringle of De Soto, Wis.; children David Pringle of Colorado Springs, Col., Daniel Pringle of Waterloo, and Darcey (Derek) Beuge of Lansing; five grandchildren: Nathan (Kristine) Pringle, Niki Pringle, Whitney (Jon Thompson) Hubert, Maxine Hubert and Nicholas Beuge; one brother, Jimmy (Vallie) Palmer; sisters Charis (Emmett) Brown, Carolyn Palmer, Elsie Niemeyer, Trella (Duane) Walker, Donna (Dick) Firgard and Pat (Harold) Hammond; as well as nieces, and nephews. She would have also been a great-grandmother this year to a baby girl, the daughter of Nathan and Kristine Pringle.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carlton and Wallace Palmer; brother-in-law Bob Niemeyer; and a nephew, Bobby Palmer.

Jean (Staudt) Donovan

    Jean (Staudt) Donovan, 70, of Branson, Mo., passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2009, in Springfield, Mo. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Vera Staudt of Marble Rock.

Donald Meek

    Donald Meek, 80, of Charles City, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

    Donald Leo Meek was born July 10, 1928, in Floyd County, the son of John H. and Mary (Marzen) Meek. He received his education at Saint Mary’s Academy in Greene. Donald proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On Dec. 27, 1952, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Boyer at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Donald farmed from 1952 to 1990 in the Greene and Colwell areas and was co-owner, with his brother Wayne, of Meek Brothers Grinding and Mixing. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge and served for nine years as a board member of the Colwell Coop. In his early years he enjoyed playing softball at Greene. Don liked watching the Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, and taking in games of Comette softball. In his spare time he also did woodworking. Don and Cheryl always looked forward to dancing on Saturday nights.
    Living family members include his wife, Cheryl Meek of Charles City; two daughters, Connie Bromberg of Dubuque and Deb Vance of Charles City; five grandchildren: Trevor and Theresa Bromberg, Shelly (Cory) Anderegg, Scott (Stacey) Vance and Shaun (Kim) Vance; six great-grandchildren, including one soon to arrive; and two sisters, Faye Porter of Bellevue, Neb. and Bonnie Lynch of Greene.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John E. Meek, Wayne Meek and Richard Meek in infancy; and four sisters, Virginia Reams, Mary Jean Ramker, Shirley Schlangen and Ruth Heitland.

Elvina Margaret Muller

    Elvina Margaret (Stegemann) Muller, 91, died at her home on Saturday, May 16, 2009.
    Visitation will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, Minn. Wednesday, at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. The interment service will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.     Elvina was born March 19, 1918, in Boyden, Iowa to Johannes and Maria Martha (Hadeler) Stegemann. On June 29, 1941, LaVern Muller and Elvina Stegemann were married in Osage.
    Elvina received her education in the Charles City schools. She worked as a secretary for the Oliver Corporation and Dr. Paul Maland. She and her husband owned Muller’s Clothing in Charles City for 13 years, before retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charles City and Grace Lutheran Church, Apple Valley. Elvina enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.
She is survived by two daughters, LaVonne (Kenneth) Hatch, Cynthia Muller; three granddaughters, Kellie (Kenneth) Lewis, Michelle Hatch, Tracy (Jeff) Davis; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Elfrieda Rittmaster, nieces and nephews.
    Elvina was preceded in death by her husband, LaVern; her parents, Johannes and Maria Stegemann; sister, Marie Buschbom and infant brother.

Mary Ann Erb

    Mary Ann Erb, 69, of Charles City, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at her home.

    Mary Ann Ackermann Erb was born on July 31, 1939, in Saint Paul, Minn., the daughter of Karl and Mary (Ettel) Ackermann.  She graduated from Saint Agnes High School in Saint Paul, Saint Catherine’s College majoring in math and German, and then attended the University of Minnesota where she received her Master’s Degree in German.  Mary Ann also received a Fulbright Scholarship and attended the University of Mainz in Germany. On August 16, 1969, she was united in marriage to Jim Erb in Trier, Germany.  Over the years Mary Ann was a teacher of math and German in both the United States and Germany.  She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister, served on the Parish Council and Spiritual Life Committee.  Mary Ann also was a member of the American Association of University Women where she held offices in the Charles City branch and the state organization, Call to Action, City Improvement Association, P.E.O., Charles City Women’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary and the Democratic Party.  She worked on the Women’s Appointment Coalition, led two student groups in the Experiment in International Living Program, assisted with the high school GAPP program including co-leading several student groups to Germany; she translated a number of German texts to English for a recently published book.  Family, friends and community were extremely important to Mary Ann.  She always kept the family flame burning brightly and will be remembered for always inspiring everyone to do better.  Family trips were special times and she was the chief planner and photographer.  Mary Ann was also the “glue” for a vast number of  friends such as The J’s, Neighbors Card Club, the Global Group, Birthday Group, Yak and Snack, Newcomers Bridge Group and the Ya-Ya’s.  When it came to community issues she was a life long learner who never stopped asking questions.  This led her to become involved in many improvement efforts.  She was passionate about a wide variety of issues and activities.
    Living family members include her husband, Jim Erb of Charles City; three children, Elizabeth (Scott) Firmstone of South Elgin, Ill., Paul (Michele) Erb of White Plains, N.Y., and Joe Erb of Bellingham, Wash.; three grandchildren, Lucas, Maxwell and Charles Firmstone; three brothers, Anthony Ackermann of Saint Paul, Minn., Karl (Gladys) Ackermann of Misawa, Japan and Fred (Paula) Ackermann of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a sister, Monica Ackermann of Bellingham, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joan (Staudt) Donovan

Joan (Staudt) Donovan, 70, of Branson, Mo., passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2009, in Springfield, Mo. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Vera Staudt of Marble Rock.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by St. Mary’s in Roseville at a later date.
Living family members include a sister, Shirley Brunsman of Kirbyville, Mo., and brothers Ray Staudt of Winter Park, Fla., and Merle Staudt of Springfield, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a twin sister, Jeanne Holt; brothers Milton and Wayne Staudt; a brother-in-law, Gene Brunsman; and her husband, Tom Donovan.



Richard W. Starkey, 57, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Columbia Heights, Minn., after a short battle with cancer.
Graveside services for Richard Starkey will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
The family will greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.
Richard William Starkey was born Jan. 1, 1952, at Charles City, the son of Robert and Ruth (Dailey) Starkey. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1970 and Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Richard served in the United States Navy, serving in Vietnam. He was employed for 30 years at the Wrico MN of Minneapolis. He was Financial Secretary of Local 1140 Int’l AFL-CIO Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers Union. Richard was the Treasurer and Secretary for the Fridley Alano Society. Most weekends you could find Richard watching NASCAR races. He had also been to Daytona Beach several times. Rich will be deeply missed by his family.
He will be deeply missed by his siblings, Glen (Kathy) Starkey of Mill Valley, Calif., JonAnn Fredericks of Mason City, Jerry (JoAnn) Starkey of Mason City; brother-in-law Jack Ferch and sister-in-law, Donna Starkey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Janice Ferch; a brother, Clyde Starkey; and brother-in-law Arnold Fredricks.

Duane R. Wegne

Duane R. Wegner, 54, of 1454 Underwood Avenue in Charles City, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a courageous, five-year battle with cancer.
 A funeral service will be held Friday, May 22, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 Main Street S, in Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.  A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City, and again one hour prior to the service at the church.  Stories, condolences, and thoughts may be shared with the family on the funeral home website at www.Fullertonfh.com.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Duane Wegner Memorial Fund.
Duane was born on Jan. 24, 1955, in Charles City, the son of Russell and Eileen (Meyer) Wegner.  He graduated from Charles City High School in 1973.  He was united in marriage to Christine Shultz on June 4, 1976 at the Trinity Methodist Church in Charles City.  Duane grew up farming with his family, was then employed with White Farm, and finally worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 24 years.  Duane and Christy also raised dogs and Tennessee walking horses on their farm near Colwell. Duane was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, and also attended First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Tenn.  His Faith was very important to him.  Duane loved the outdoors.  He looked forward to fishing trips in Canada and Tennessee, horseback riding, and 4-wheeling.  Most importantly he enjoyed participating in all the activities his family was involved in.
 Duane was preceded in death by his father, Russell Wegner.
 Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Christine; children, Jesse and Tanner Wegner and McKenzie (Nicholas) Raab; mother, Eileen Wegner; brother, Alan (Karen) Wegner; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Susan Beth Pringle

Susan Beth Pringle, 64, of De Soto, Wis., died Saturday May 16, 2009, at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis. She was surrounded by her family, and cared for by a special group of people in the Hospice Unit. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Frank Cadwell/Palliative Care, and Hospitce RN Stephanie Lee, your kindness will never be forgotten.
Susan donated her body to the University of Iowa and there will be no services at this time.
Susan Beth was born April 25, 1945, to Donald and Florence (Jennings) Palmer in Fairmont, Minn. She was the second youngest of nine children. She met Joe Pringle while peeling potatoes at Denny's Cafe in Garner. They wed March 8, 1963, in Klemme and were married for 46 years. They lived for a time in Charles City and later moved to an acreage in Floyd, where they lived for 15 years. Susan was a beautiful, giving and selfless lady, always working while taking care of her family. He greatest accomplishment was returning to school and becoming a Group Home Supervisor for Comprehensive Systems 9th Street Group Home in Charles City. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, watching birds and being with her cat Sophie. She was the best wife, mother and grandmother a family could ask for. Even through the last few days of her life, she showed us strength and wisdom.
She is survived by husband Joe Pringle of De Soto, Wis.; children David Pringle of Colorado Springs, Col., Daniel Pringle of Waterloo, and Darcey (Derek) Beuge of Lansing; five grandchildren: Nathan (Kristine) Pringle, Niki Pringle, Whitney (Jon Thompson) Hubert, Maxine Hubert and Nicholas Beuge; one brother, Jimmy (Vallie) Palmer; sisters Charis (Emmett) Brown, Carolyn Palmer, Elsie Niemeyer, Trella (Duane) Walker, Donna (Dick) Firgard and Pat (Harold) Hammond; as well as nieces, and nephews. She would have also been a great-grandmother this year to a baby girl, the daughter of Nathan and Kristine Pringle.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carlton and Wallace Palmer; brother-in-law Bob Niemeyer; and a nephew, Bobby Palmer.

    George Carstens, 70, of 919 N. Taylor in Mason City, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009 at his home.

William ‘Bill’ E. Erion

    William “Bill” E. Erion, 73, of Charles City, died Friday, May 22, 2009 at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, after battling a rare lung disease.
A memorial gathering will be held in Charles City at noon on Wednesday, May 27, on the Cedar River on Court and Gilbert streets followed by a luncheon at the V.F.W.
    William Eugene Erion was born July 8, 1935 in Charles City. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a paratrooper. He was employed at White Farm, Inc. in Charles City for 29 years. He also hauled tanks for FarmChem in Floyd for 10 years. Most of his beloved memories belong to Jan’s Shady Acres which he owned for 21 years. Bill enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, camping, playing cards, snowmobiling, skiing, boating and was an avid gardener. He spent many winter months enjoying retirement in Texas.
    He will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Janice; children Gale Erion (Leigh) of Columbia, Mo., Queen Jensen (Jeff) of Charles City, Linda Peters (Jim Walk) of Rochester, Minn. and Brenda Lane (Paul) of Livingston, Wis.; sisters Ruth Otto of Charles City and Evelyn Jakosa of Lincolnshire, Ill.; brothers Faye Erion of Charles City and Don Erion of Mason City. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Kristina Voyna, Amanda Erion, Blake Jensen, Corey Lane, Afton Jensen, Amber Lane (who is expecting a first great grandchild in July); and three step-grandchildren, James, Sara and Hanna Jennings.
    Bill was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Eva Marie (Fick) Erion and his two sisters Merna Stockness and Mary Danno.
    The Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa is handling arrangements. Family is requesting that no flowers be sent, but has set up a memorial fund in Bill’s name at the Charles City Credit Union and is taking donations.
 

Nolan N. Townsend

    Nolan N. Townsend, 92, of Charles City, died Monday morning, May 25, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.
    Funeral services for Nolan Townsend will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday May 29 at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

    Nolan Noah Townsend was born July 4, 1916, in Niles Township, the son of Harold and Gladys (Noah) Townsend.  He received his education from Towner and Ballard Country Schools. On January 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Katharine Bonsall at Charles City. As a youth, he worked as a farm hand, and later was employed for Jasperson Ball, Capital Tobacco, Oliver Corp., Ardery Transportation and Sperry Transportation. Nolan retired from White Farm on July 1, 1981. He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. His interests included raising and showing American Saddle Bred Horses in fine harness shows; dancing and playing cards.
    Living family members include his two children, Nola Kerulis of Dubuque and Roger (Pat) Townsend of Charles City; six grandchildren, Catherine (Sam) Theodore, Victoria (Robert) Knochenmus, Kimberly Townsend, Roger (Amber) Townsend Jr., Jason (Angie) LaPolice and Chad (Heather) LaPolice; 14 great-grandchildren; three sister-in-laws, Viola Townsend of Belmond, Evelyn Bonsall of Waterloo and Effie Miller of Charles City; special friend, Elleanora Rex of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son-in-law, Frank Kerulis; great-grandson, Francis Fletcher; three brothers, Marvin Townsend, Merlyn Townsend and Barton Townsend; sister, Neoma Brooks; five brother-in-laws and three sister-in-laws.

    Gail Joyce Meyer Lonergan was born Jan. 17, 1935, in Charles City, the daughter of Rueben and Mildred (Howe) Meyer. She graduated from Charles City High School. In February of 1956 she married Dale Lonergan. They later divorced. Gail worked at New Hampton Care Center for many years and Heritage Residence in New Hampton. Gail, for the past 13 years, was involved with the foster grandparent program. She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Gail always enjoyed playing a rousing game of cards. Her greatest interest was her family and she always looked forward to sharing her life with them.
    Living family members include two daughters, Shirley (Ed) Platte and Joyce (Michael) Downing both of Charles City; four grandchildren, Aaron and Abigail Platte and Travis and Tyler Downing; and her pet cat, Toby II.
     She was preceded in death by her parents.
