Wilbur Daake

Wilbur Daake, 95, of Charles City, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at his residence.

Memorial services for Wilbur Daake will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Robert Holdorf, of the West St. Charles United Methodist Church, will officiate. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Wilbur Robert Daake was born Oct. 12, 1913, on the Daake family farm in Floyd County, the son of Adolph and Martha (Schmidt) Daake. He graduated from the Charles City High School. On May 29, 1940, he was united in marriage to Edna Colwell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed all their lives on the Daake family farm. Wilbur was a member of the Flood Creek/West St. Charles United Methodist Church and the Knights of Pythias. His primary interests were any that included family, fishing, golfing, playing cards and traveling. At home Wilbur enjoyed watching baseball and playing solitaire.

Living family members include a son, Dennis Daake of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two granddaughters, Samantha Daake and Jeanette (Chris) Illingworth; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Reuben Daake; and two sisters, Mildred Kielsmeier and Elsie Marth.

RICEVILLE — Irma Jean Dvorak age 83, of Riceville, known to all as Jeanne and “Hummy” to few, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

A funeral mass will be at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville on Saturday Oct. at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Friday, Oct. 2, during the hours of 4 -8 p.m. Rosary will be at 5 p.m.

Wilbert R. Remley

NASHUA — Wilbert R. Remley, 91, of Nashua passed away Wednesday morning, Sept. 30, 2009, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 on Monday, Oct. 5, at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. and continue Monday for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Burial will be in the Horton Cemetery rural Waverly.

Laura Bertha Heddens

Laura Bertha Heddens, 94, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth Martin Health Center.

She was born Feb. 1, 1915 near Edgewood, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Anna M. (Von Talgue) Wessel. Laura attended a one-room rural school near her farm home. She had six brothers and seven sisters, and left the family farm at an early age to work and help support the family.

On Oct. 3, 1937, she married Ralph R. Heddens at Parkersburg. After a time farming, they made their home in Waterloo, moving in 1954 to Cedar Falls. Ralph was employed by John Deere, and Laura cooked for the Waterloo School System for 25 years and later worked in retail sales.

Laura was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church of Cedar Falls and spent many hours cooking for the Woman’s Society. She and Ralph had a large garden and supplied neighbors, friends and the church kitchen with vegetables, fruit and baked goods on a regular basis. Laura enjoyed charity works, sports, cooking, canning, gardening and especially family and friends.

Laura is survived by her son, Robert D. (Martha Keeney) Heddens, of Park City, Utah; two grandchildren, Richard L. (Katherine) Heddens of Park City, Utah and Kathryn (Tom) Cowburn of Powell, Ohio, and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at the Western Home Communities Chapel, Cedar Falls. Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Western Home Communities. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Milo Ray Schwarck was born April 12, 1922, in Grundy County, the son of Alonzo and Ada (Smith) Schwarck. After his father’s death, when Mike was 12, he and his brothers took over the farming operation. Mike graduated from Whitten High School in 1941. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. While serving in Italy he was injured and spent the remainder of his time in the hospital at Salt Lake City, Utah. On March 4, 1945, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Schuler. After his discharge, Mike returned to Grundy County and farming. In 1956 they moved to Mitchell County where they had purchased a farm and where they would remain until retirement. On Oct. 8, 1994, Lorraine died. Mike married Betty Woelfer Frankenfield on June 29, 1996. He was a member of the Colwell United Church of Christ, V.F.W. and had served as president of the Mitchell County Farm Bureau and chairman of the township ASC. His interests included fishing and playing cards. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor.

Living family members include his wife, Betty Schwarck of Charles City; three daughters: Jeanine (Gordon) Lockie of Elma, Christine (Gregory) Pitts of Elk Grove, Calif., and Korine Winders of Charles City; nine grandchildren: Andrew (Melissa) Lockie, Erin (Mike) Shea, Michael Lockie and special friend Amy Rausch, Rachel (Nick) Boyle, Tammy (Barry) Smith, Jason (Jamie) Pitts, Daron (Melissa) Pitts, Adria (Joe) Pierce and Amanda Scheffert and special friend Brian Englehardt; 12 great-grandchildren; five brothers: Dale (Margery) Schwarck of Eldora, Victor (Mona) Schwarck of Union, Donald (Norma) Schwarck, Paul (Catherine) Schwarck and Carl (Joan) Schwarck all of Marshalltown; and three sisters-in-law: Phyllis Schwarck of Union, Evelyn Schwarck of Eldora and Inez Wulford of Burlington.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Lorraine; two brothers, Glen and Maurice Schwarck; a half brother, Richard Wulford; a sister, Margaret White; and a half sister, Lucille Strauss.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Jane Blunt

MASON CITY — Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Blunt, 86, Mason City, died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

A funeral service for Betty will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200-14th Street NW, Mason City, with Reverend Steve Hansen officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126-3rd St. NE, Mason City. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church. Following the service on Saturday and according to Betty’s wishes cremation will take place. Inurnment will take place at 10 a.m.. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

In lieu of flowers and as expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church in her memory.

Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Blunt, was born on Oct. 15, 1922, in Corwith, the daughter of Herman and Ethel (Hackman) McDougle. Betty attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1941. After graduation, Betty began working for Dr. Stott in the veterinary business in Mason City. She was united in marriage to Richard Blunt on June 27, 1942, in Austin, Minn. After their marriage Betty worked for the United States Postal Service in San Francisco, Calif, was a loving homemaker before working at Henry’s Drive Inn, and also drove for Guardian Photo in Mason City, before retiring to do baby sitting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty enjoyed animals, sewing, canning and baking, but her greatest love and enjoyment was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a very active member of the Grace United Methodist Church, WSCS church circle, former Sunday School teacher and superintendent, past member of the Fireman’s auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and Military Order of the Cooties.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Richard Blunt of Mason City; her children: Mike (Kris) Blunt of Mason City, Pamela Hardy of Hopkins, Minn., and Sally Jo (Danny) Tripp of Mason City; her grandchildren: Shane Blunt, Jason (Megan) Blunt, Mindy (Damon) Runge, Mae (Jim) Miles and Matt (Jen) Blunt all of Mason City, and Lisa Hardy of Crystal, Minn.; her great-grandchildren: Jordan Blunt, Parker Blunt, Parker Niles, Gage Blunt, Carson Blunt, Kailee Blunt, Tylar Runge, Peytan Runge, Aubree Miles, JP Miles, Elleanor Miles and Skylar Blunt; her sister, Joy Solum of Mason City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Richard Harvey and James Blunt, a sister, June King, and three brothers, Gordon, Harvey, and Dwaine McDougle.

Violette M. Thompson-Rickerl, 77, of Charles City, died Monday morning, Oct. 5, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Violette Mae Eisberg was born Jan. 29, 1932, at Salisbury, Mo., the daughter of Walter R. and Amanda (Jass) Eisberg. She graduated from the Garner High School in 1949. On Jan. 2, 1951, she married Arnold Pearson at Garner. They later divorced. On May 28, 1978, Violette married Leon Thompson at Mason City. Leon died in May of 1995. On Jan. 3, 1998, she was united in marriage to Herman Rickerl at Charles City. Violette and Herman’s marriage was blessed by a Catholic Priest in Leroy, Minn. on Jan. 10, 1998. She was a farmer’s wife for 23 years, secretary and bookkeeper at Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau, Hancock County ASCA Office, and bookkeeper for Thompson Mobile Service in Charles City. Violette was a 4-H leader for nine years, Sunday school teacher, Hospice volunteer, Food Box volunteer and a Pink Lady at the Floyd County Medical Center. She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City Women’s Club and the Hoe Garden Club. Her interests include playing in 500 marathons, arranging flowers, gardening and reading books. Violette’s favorite saying was, “To accept everyone as they are, not as they were yesterday or as they will be tomorrow, but as they are today.”

Living family members include her husband, Herman Rickerl of Charles City; three children, Ellen Olson of Ames, Jeanne Carls of Coon Rapids, Minn., and William Pearson of Peoria, Ill.; eight step-children: Carmine (Dean) Swenson, Loren (Penny) Rickerl, Janelle (Gary) Sunnes all of Riceville, Karen (Larry) Smith of Broomfield, Colo., Marlin (Jan) Thompson of Harlan, Marlys (Frank) Nockels of Arvada, Colo., Paula Schwab of Fort Collins, Colo. and Jeffery Thompson, Sr. of Sun Prairie, Wis.; four grandchildren: Amanda (Tony) DeGrote, Andrew (Mary Anna) Carls, Ben (Stephanie) Olson and Sarah Olson; 24 step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren: Blake DeGrote, Tyanna Medrud, Kaleb Carls and Jack Carls; and several step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon Thompson; one step-granddaughter; and one step-great granddaughter.

NASHUA — Lillian Edna (Nordman) Friedly, 89, formerly of Nashua died Sept. 17, 2009, at Trail Lake Nursing Center in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua.

Dale W. Cummings, 95, of Charles City, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 8, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dale Cummings will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Norman Bauer of the Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Dale William Cummings was born May 2, 1914, at Bassett, the son of Jesse and Pearl (Bonsall) Cummings. He graduated from the Colwell High School in 1933. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Manning. Dale was employed at Hart Parr/Oliver Corporation for 44 years as a machine operator and assembly person. He was a member of the NRA, Floyd Gun Club and Floyd Lions Club where he served as past president. His interests included trap shooting, hunting, fishing and work.

NASHUA — Lillian Edna (Nordman) Friedly, 89, formerly of Nashua died Sept. 17, 2009, at Trail Lake Nursing Center in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Pastor Thomas Hagen officiating.

Lillian Edna (Nordman) Friedly was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Rochester, Minn., the daughter of Harry and Frances Eileen (Swift) Adams. Lillian attended Bradford Country School and graduated from Nashua High School in 1937. She was united in marriage to Leo William Nordman on Aug. 30, 1937. To this union four daughters were born. They made their home in Nashua until Leo’s death on June 13, 1968. Lillian moved to Kansas and on Dec. 16, 1969, she was married to Clinton Friedly. They lived in Kansas and Arkansas. Following Clintons death on Feb. 15, 1994, Lillian moved back to Iowa. She moved to Texas in 2004.

Lillian was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua. She loved doing crafts of all sorts. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, doll making and flowers.

She is survived by her four daughters: Nancy (Donald) Scharnhorst of Nashua, Linda (Joe) Flerlage of Hardy, Ark, Carla Greenlee of Bristow and Kiana (Bill) Byrnes of Granbury, Texas; 15 grandchildren: Rebecca (Louis) Fuhringer, Lorinda (David) Groe, Robin (Dean) Meinders and Jolene (Dan) Fehr; Douglas (Nancy) Reuscher, Denice (Robert) Harrington, Steven (Janell) Reuscher, Scott (Coleicia) Reuscher and David (Tara) Reuscher; Tamara (Brett) Ackerson and Angela (Brett) Kueker; Michelle (Doug) Hartman, Jamie (Jasmine) Orosz, Michael (Melissa) Orosz and Cyndi Kennimer; 32 (soon to be 33) great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Fick of Salina, Kan. and Gail Nordman of Charles City.

Richard A. Tynan, Sr., 61, of Rockford, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Richard Tynan, Sr. will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor David Werges of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Richard Allan Tynan, Sr. was born July 1, 1948, at Charles City, the son of Leo and Barbara (Nelson) Tynan. He graduated from the Council Bluff School for the Deaf. On Dec. 15, 1973, he was united in marriage to Diane McDonald in Cedar Rapids. Richard was employed at Allied Construction for over 30 years. After retirement he worked part-time on the night shift at Wal-Mart. He was a member of the Iowa Deaf Club and the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. His interests included side jobs, fishing, hunting, camping, fixing things, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Living family members include his two children, Richard Tynan, Jr. of Mason City and Racheal (Jeremiah) Ferch of New Hampton; seven grandchildren: Mercedes and Lexus Tynan, Cole, Chelsea, Justice, J.J. and Jesup Ferch; special friend Patty Mathis of Waukon; many cousins, including Denny Tynan; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Ronald Staudt, 67, of Charles City, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City after a seven-year battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass for Ronald Staudt will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Ronald Earl Staudt was born April 20, 1942, in Floyd County, the son of Earl and Dorothy (Schmitt) Staudt. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School at Roseville and graduated from Rockford High School in 1960. On Sept. 4, 1965, he was united in marriage to Mona Riden at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville. They farmed all their lives south of Charles City. Ronald was a steward of the earth, enjoying both grain and livestock farming. He always took great pride in the fact that he supported his family through the family farm. Ronald will always be remembered as a person that appreciated having a well kept farm. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Elks Lodge, where he was a trustee for several years, served on both the Charles City and Immaculate Conception School school boards, and on the board of directors of the Colwell Coop. His interests included woodworking, golfing, bowling, boating, fishing and playing cards. Family, especially his grandchildren, was always important to Ronald and he took every opportunity possible to share his life with them and be a part of everything they were doing.

Living family members include his wife, Mona Staudt of Charles City; four children: Douglas (Susan) Staudt of Cedar Falls, Steven (Nikki) Staudt of Forest City, Charles (Angie) Staudt of Charles City and Renee (Brody) Boss of Charles City; 11 grandchildren: Alexander, William, and Isabelle Staudt, Jake, Abbey, and Gabe Staudt, Drew, Lydia and Lauren Staudt and Margaret and Madeline Boss; his mother, Dorothy Staudt of Charles City; a brother, Roger (Bonita) Staudt of Marble Rock; three sisters: Catherine (I. John) Rossi of West Des Moines, Marlys Staudt of Knoxville, Tenn., and Karen Trettin of Charles City; his mother-in-law, Margaret Riden of Charles City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Julie Idler Rice, 58, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at her home in Scottsdale, Ariz., following a battle with cancer.

Julie Rae Idler was born Sept. 15, 1951, at Charles City, the daughter of Leighton and Verna (Klinehart) Idler. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1969. After graduating from Mankato Commercial College, she was employed at University Hospitals in Iowa City as a secretary in the radiology department, where she met her husband, Dr. Alfred Rice. They married on May 27, 1972, at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Julie enjoyed tennis, her tape ministry, traveling, jigsaw puzzles, knitting booties for a crisis pregnancy center, and many other hand working projects. She was a member of the Scottsdale Bible Church.

Living family members include her husband, Alfred Rice of Scottsdale, Ariz.; mother Verna Gray of Charles City; a sister, Connie (Frank) Francis of Clare; two nieces, Tracy Reitmeier of Cedar Rapids and Rebecca Reitmeier of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and step-sister, Jean (Bob) Bennett of Storm Lake.

MARBLE ROCK — Frederick Edward Kuykendall, 63, passed away on Oct. 10, 2009.

Frederick was born in Lake City, Minn., on July 18, 1946, and raised in Charles City. He graduated in 1965 and enlisted into the Army in December 1965 to 1968. Fred served in Vietnam from 1966-1967. After his service Fred worked as a mechanic till he discovered over the road trucking was his calling.

Fred was married to Connie Lumm on Feb. 17, 1968; they had two daughters, Julie (Brad Pitman) and Jennifer (Paul Johnson). They were divorced in 1982.

Later Fred remarried in 1987 to Kristie (Meier-Hayes) and acquired three more children, Chad, Jennifer (Todd Adams) and Rebeka (Mike Johnson).

Fred was blessed with 11 grandchildren: Alan, Heather and Ricky of Charles City; Steven and Austin of Portland; Tayler, Emma and Macie of Orchard; Bailey, Emily and Zoey of Osage.

Fred is survived by his mother Dee (Bill Berns) of Charles City; sister, Sherri (John Wirkler) of Prairie du Chien and Janet (Jerry Schwickrath) of New Mexico.

On May 18, 1991, he was united in marriage to Lauri Schriever at the Lutheran Church in Elma. Brad was employed at Featherlite Trailers for five years as a paint booth foreman. He was a life-time member of the North American Hunting Club. His interests included fishing, hunting, trapping, four-wheeling, cutting firewood and spending time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

NASHUA — Albert Wolff, age 86 of Nashua died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 12, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Nashua. Interment was in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City with the Nashua VFW Post #6792 providing military honors.

Albert William Wolff was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Nashua, the son of Adolph Gustav and Amelia Wilhelmina (Gutzmer) Wolff. He received his education in rural country school. At the age of ten, he and his brother, Adolph “Butch,” age 14, began running the family farm to enable their father to work at the former Hart-Parr Tractor Company in Charles City. He was inducted into the United States Army on April 7, 1945, and was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class on Aug. 1, 1946.

On Jan. 26, 1946, in Bremerton, Wash., he married Merle Irene Bonwell. To this union three children were born. In 1954, the couple moved to their acreage north of Nashua where they lived for over 50 years. For the past two years, Albert resided at the Cedar Vale Assisted Living in Nashua.

Albert worked for the former Oliver and White Farm Tractor, retiring after 30 years, had sold real estate and been an auctioneer. In his free time he enjoyed wood-working, playing cards and was known for his story-telling.

Survivors include his wife, Merle; one son, Jim (Lora) Wolff of Keokuk; one daughter, Linda Wolff of Cedar Falls; a grandson, Brandon Wolff; a sister, Martha Crooks of Nashua; and a sister-in-law, Alice Wolff of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Wolff; a brother, Adolph “Butch” Wolff Jr. and a sister, Margaret Bahlmann.

Hulda Lindaman, 91, of Charles City, died Monday, Oct.12, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Hulda was born on Dec.18, 1917, in Charles City, the daughter of Edward and Martha (Volbrecht) Togstad. She lived in Charles City most of her life, graduating from Charles City High School, where she met her future husband, Ben Lindaman. Hulda attended business school in Madison, Wis. for two years. She was united in marriage to Ben on Feb. 26, 1944, in Los Angeles, Calif., where he was stationed during World War II. After Ben’s discharge from the Coast Guard, the couple moved back to Charles City. Hulda began working as a secretary at Lindemere Dairy, and then at White Farm for many years before retiring in 1980.

Hulda was very active at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church where she had been a member of the Church Board and the Altar Guild. She was also involved in the Women’s Club and played cards in a Bridge Club. She also loved to sew and knit, making many wonderful creations for her family. In her later years, she became a big sports fan, mainly cheering on the teams in the cities where her children lived (Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and the Iowa Hawkeyes). Most of all, Hulda’s life revolved around her family, which provided her with much pride and joy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jim, Lynn (Anne) and Steve (Becky) Lindaman and Viva (Bruce) Boerschel; grandchildren: Bob (Erin) Boerschel, Becky (Jeremy Bahe) Boerschel, Lauren Lindaman and Benton Lindaman; and great-grandchild Kinleigh Bahe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, in 1967; sisters, Lorna Cade and Jackie Olds; and her parents.

Austin William Wahl, age 4 ½ months, of Charles City, son of Brandee Reams and Will Wahl died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at his home.

Paul F. Gerhard, 92, of Heritage Manor, died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday Oct. 11, 2009, at Heritage Manor.

There will be no public visitation or services. Comittal services will be at noon Thursday, Oct. 15, at Rosehill Cemetery in Greene with Pastor Hatcher officiating.

Paul was born on June 17, 1917 in Greene, the son of George and Elsie (Paske) Gerhard. He served in the US Army during WWII. He worked for John Deere and Co. in Waterloo for 30 years.

An avid Chicago Cub fan and Iowa Hawkeye fan, Paul was a kind man who was liked by all who knew him.

He is survived by nieces and nephews: Joan Gardner, Galen Gerhard, JR., John Gerhard, Patricia Megar, Russell Gerhard, many great nieces, nephews and cousins and special friends JoAnn and Jeff Dillon.

Nettie Lorene Vetter, 81, a beloved wife, mother, and grandma passed away Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Nettie was called home by God after struggling with multiple health issues. She was born Jan. 23, 1928, in New Hampton, one of six children to Dee Bolin and Mary (Hennings) Nelson. Coming from a large family brought such joy to her life. She graduated from Colwell High School in 1945. She met and fell in love with Harold John Vetter and married in Charles City, beginning 61 years of beautiful life together.

Nettie understood that making a difference in the lives of others in the journey of life is our reward. She was actively involved at St. Thomas Holy Spirit Lutheran Church and with her children’s activities. Her smile lit up a room and calmed life’s challenges. She was a great teacher of life’s lessons led by her great faith, love of her family and friends, caring nature, and can do attitude.

Nettie was loved and respected by many and left a lasting imprint on the lives of all that knew her.

Dear wife of departed Harold; loving mother of Paul (Linda) Vetter, Susan (Todd) Gerlach, Harold John (Alice) Vetter II, and the late Kenneth Vetter; grandma of six, great-grandma of five: and sister of Glen Nelson, Betty Watkins, Delorus Fike and the late Emma Nelson and Barbara Tynan.

Glenn proudly served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II in the European theater. On Oct. 8, 1941, he married Betty Schilling at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union three children, Galen, Ginger and Sally were born. They later divorced. Glenn then married Susan Ranney. Glenn worked for Western Buyers as a hog buyer for 40 years and opened his own buying station in 1980. He and Susan wintered for the past 25 years in Rio Grande Valley, Tex. Glenn was an avid card player, fisherman and golfer. He also followed the Charles City girls softball teams for years.

Living family members include his wife, Susan Pyle of Charles City; three children: Galen (Bernice) Pyle of San Antonio, Texas, Ginger Meyer of Charles City and Sally Short of San Jose, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Jason (Carolyn) Meyer, Brianna Meyer and special friend Chris Freiberg, Ryan Short, Stephan (Amy) Pyle, Janelle (Lindsey) Williams, Michelle (Ryan) Vener and Christine (Paul) Dyer; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Rebecka Mae Hebert, 36, of Charles City, formerly of Thornton, died Wednesday. Oct. 14, 2009. at the Floyd County Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 19, at the Retz Funeral Home, Thornton with Rev. G. Kim Wills of Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Sunday at Retz Funeral Home, Thornton.

Rebecka Mae Buss was born Aug. 21, 1973, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri a daughter of Larry Dean and Glenda Mae (Long) Buss. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Charles City at the same time as her mother and graduated from Hampton Dumont High School in 1991. She attended college in both Iowa Falls and Mason City.

Rebecka married Casey James Hebert on Dec. 5, 1996. She worked as a manager at Taco Johns for the last several years.

Rebecka was a generous person who enjoyed being around people and helping others. She enjoyed swimming, dancing and playing with her dog, Gizmo. She recently joined a bowling league and thoroughly enjoyed the sport and camaraderie.

Her family includes her husband: Casey and daughter Tawni of Charles City; her parents, Larry and Glenda Buss, Mason City; a sister, Julie (Mark) Melver, Elma; grandmother Irene Buss, Mason City; uncles Curtis (Victoria) Buss of Mason City, Gordon (Carmen) Buss of Ridgeway and Amos (Ria) Long of Crocker, Mo.; aunt Margaret (Bill) Zubrod, New Hampton; mother-in-law Kathy Hebert, Cedar Falls; and a sister-in-law and niece, Valerie Kofron and Zoe of Cedar Falls.

She is preceded in death by her uncle: Gene Buss and one uncle in infancy, grandparents Otto Buss and Amos and Eula Mae Long.

GREENE — Funeral services for Bruce James Schroeder, 62, of 310 Greene St., will be at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 4-8p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene with a Public Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Bruce James Schroeder was born June 7, 1947 in Mason City, the son of James Douglas and Mary Katherine (Schreiber) Schroeder and died Oct. 17, at his home in Greene. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

Kenneth Leslie, 37, of Charles City, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services for Kenneth Leslie will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Timothy Robbins of Calvary Baptist Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Kenneth Lee Leslie was born April 8, 1972, at Charles City, the son of Russel and Mary (Hermen) Leslie. He attended high school in Charles City. On Jan. 11, 1992, he was united in marriage to Jennifer Dana. Kenneth worked various jobs including as a roofer with Midwest Roofing. His interests included watching movies, bowling, hunting, fishing and camping at Clear Lake. He also looked forward to spending time with his family.

Living family members include his wife, Jennifer of Charles City; 5 children, Heather, LeeAnna, Miranda, Kenneth, Jr. and Elizabeth all at home; his mother, Mary Leslie of Nashua; two brothers, Marion Leslie of Nashua and Michcal (Myssi) Leslie of Waverly, along with close friend Jim Foster who he loved like a brother; four sisters, Maria (Dan) Janssen and Margaret Leslie both of Nashua, Janice (Gary) Thompson of Charles City and Ann Foster of New Hampton; many nieces and nephews including Shawn Janssen, Tim Thompson and J.W. Ward.

He was preceded in death by his father; a son, K.J. Leslie; and a sister, Katherine Leslie.

Ralph ‘Jack’ Johnson

Ralph “Jack” Johnson died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be Saturday from 3-6 p.m. at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Ralph Lester Johnson was born March 30, 1923, in Floyd County, the son of Ralph W. and Nellie (Thompson) Johnson. He received his education at the Bassett School. Ralph proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. On April 11, 1948, he was united in marriage to Jessie Warren. Jessie died on June 30, 1962. Jack married JoAnn Shrope on September 22, 1962. JoAnn died on Oct. 26, 2006. During his working career he worked for several companies including Condon Brothers and New Haven for 25 years. He was a member of the V.F.W. Jack enjoyed a great day of fishing. His family and especially his grandchildren meant a lot to Jack and he took every opportunity to share his life with them.

Living family members include a daughter, Mary Lou (Wally) Reams of Charles City; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Justin) Geerts, Ginger (Corey) Schmidt and Lindsay Reams; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; two brothers, Jim and Vic Johnson; and four sisters, Lelia Rodamaker, Wilma Reinhardt, Viola Babcock and Opal Martin.
