James ‘Burt’ Kelsey

RUDD —James “Burt” Kelsey, 87, of 1765 Hickory Ave. in Rudd passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, at the Rudd United Methodist Church at 611 6th St. in Rudd with Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating. The family will greet friends on Monday, Aug. 3 one hour prior to Burt’s service at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 6th St. in Rudd. Burt’s final request was to donate his body to the Mayo Clinic Whole Body Donation Program in Rochester, Minn. Cremation and private family inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the James “Burt” Kelsey Memorial Fund. Burt was born on Feb. 16, 1922, in Mason City, the son of Wilbur and Elva (Burton) Kelsey. He grew up in and was educated in Rudd. Burt was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II on the submarine the U.S.S. Saury. He had lived most all of his life in Rudd. Burt was united in marriage to Karol Field on Feb. 9, 1974 in Dike.

Burt throughout the years had been employed at White Farm Implement in Charles City. He had been a school bus driver, owned and operated Kelsey Oil Co., Farmer’s CO-OP, worked at Hoover’s Hatchery and opened a Laundromat, all in Rudd. He had also been an independent block layer and cement worker. He was a lover of animals, especially draft horses. He enjoyed going to horse sales, attending parades, playing cards and was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye Basketball.

Burt was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church, the Lions’ Club and a volunteer fireman, both of Rudd. He was also a member of the Iowa Draft Horse Association and the Percheron Association of America. Burt was inducted into the Draft Horse Hall of Fame in 2001. Burt will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Burt’s life are: his wife, Karol Kelsey of Rudd; his two children, Mike (Nancy) Kelsey of Rudd, Karol Burks of Charles City; step-son Bryan (Kathy) Hobbs of Rudd; three grandchildren, Yvonne Burks of Charles City, Jamie Burks of Shawnee, Kan., and Jeremy Hobbs of Rockford; and one great-granddaughter, Mya Eckenrod of Charles City.

Burt was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Elva (Burton) Kelsey; his first wife, Mary Kelsey; an infant daughter, Karen Kelsey; and his sister, Louise Kelsey.

Joyce Fern Marzen

MARBLE ROCK — A Funeral Mass for Joyce Fern Marzen, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dougherty with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan and Father Dubert officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, Dougherty where there will be a Rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Joyce F Marzen, 78 of Marble Rock died Saturday Aug. 1, 2009, at Muse Norris hospice inpatient unit in Mason City,

Joyce was born Jan. 23, 1931, in West Bend Iowa to Harold F. and M. Rosetta (Williams) Anderegg. She attended country school in Rockford and graduated as valedictorian in 1947 from Sheffield high School. She married Charles Marzen on June 22, 1948 at St. Patricks in Dougherty. They made their home on a farm near Marble Rock for the past 61 years. She resided for the past six months at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Joyce worked at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. During her 26 year career she worked first as a nurse's aide and later as a computer programmer and retired as the data processing manager in 1991.

Joyce enjoyed flower gardening, creative cooking, wine making, reading and following cyclone sports. Purple was her favorite color. She was a lifelong democratic party member and ran for Floyd County auditor.

Everyone who knew Joyce enjoyed her kind spirit and quick wit. Her children and granchildren loved to play board games with her, especially Scrabble because she was like a walking dictionary.

She was a member of Dougherty Domestic Club, Marble Rock Study Club, Mason City/Clear Lake Wine Club and the St Patrick's Ladies Auxillary.

Joyce will be greatly missed by her husband, Charles; and five children: Stephen Marzen of Greene, Theresa (Jim) Schmitt of Whittemore, Judy (Bill) Vorhes of Marble Rock, Andrea (Dennis) Keifer of Charles City and Vincent (Laurie) of Robins; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Gregory in 1999; her parents, Harold and Rosetta Anderegg; sisters Ardys Butler, Phyliss Ferrier and Ramona Schneck; and brothers Russell, Darvin and Raymond Anderegg.

Marsha Starck Williams

ATOKA, Tenn. — Marsha Starck Williams, 73, formerly of Charles City and Memphis, Tenn., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. 

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Atoka First United Methodist Church in Atoka, Tenn. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. 

Marsha was born on April 25, 1936, and was a graduate of Charles City High School (1950-1954) in Charles City. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wartburg College in Waverly. While at Wartburg, she participated in numerous extra curricular activities, including band and publications. 

Prior to moving to Memphis, she worked at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. Upon her arrival in Memphis, she began working at Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis), where she became the long-time (42 years) assistant to the director of Alumni at Rhodes. As a student at Wartburg, and later as an employee of two different colleges, she commanded a great deal of respect from friends and colleagues. She was a consummate professional at work and a devout mother at home. Upon her retirement from Rhodes, she moved to Atoka and became a member of the Atoka First United Methodist Church, where she was an active participant in the JOY Group. 

She leaves her husband, Earnest Williams; two sons, Tim Starck of Germantown and Dr. Thomas Starck of Atoka; one brother, Randy Arhart of Arkansas and two granddaughters, Camille Wen-Jun Starck and Carmen Le Yuan Starck.

Gary Taylor

Gary Taylor, 70, of Charles City, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Gary Taylor will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home. Pastor Tim Robbins, of the Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue Thursday at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.

Gary Wayne Taylor was born Oct. 12, 1938, at Mason City, the son of Wayne and Wilma (Howard) Taylor. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1957. Gary farmed and also worked at Salsbury Laboratories, from which he retired in the latter 1990’s. He was a member of the Farm Bureau. Gary enjoyed farming, but his greatest interest was his stock cows. He also looked forward to going to the bowling alley to have lunch with “his buddies.”

Living family members include two children, Robert Oakland of Minneapolis, Minn., and Crystal Taylor of Charles City; three grandchildren: Paulina Oakland, Dominick Barker and Rusty “RJ” Barker; his mother, Wilma Taylor of Charles City; and a brother, Ron Taylor of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Donald J. Berens

Donald J. Berens, 68 of Charles City and formerly of Nashua, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua, with burial in Reading, Minn.

Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Donald was born March 18, 1941, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of George and Geraldine (Koenen) Berens. He grew up on a farm by Reading and received his education in Worthington, Minn., graduating in 1959. On Oct. 27, 1959, in Sibley, he married Margaret “Peg” Agnitsch. To this union seven children were born. The couple moved to Nashua in 1964, where Donald worked for Hydrotile, Skyline Harvester and Trinity Cable. He ended his career as an over-the-road truck driver for the Sather Candy Co. out of Round Lake, Minn. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, wood-working and, as a younger man, raced stock cars.

Survivors include his wife, Peg; two daughters, DeAnna (Paul) Sanderson of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Theresa (Alan) Brewer of Stephens City, Va.; four sons, Kevin (Lori) Berens of Charlestown, W.V., Steven (Shannon) Berens of Minot, N.D., Matthew (Faith) Berens of Stephens City, Va. and Michael (Kathryn) Berens of Indianapolis, Ind; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Janet Berens of Worthington, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Anthony in infancy.


Calvin Taylor

NORTH PRAIRIE, Wis. — Calvin Taylor, 65, formerly of Charles City, passed away July 29, 2009, in North Prairie, Wis.

Services were held Aug. 4 in Wisconsin.

He was born March 13, 1944, to Emil and Dorothy Taylor in Charles City. He received his education in Charles City and joined the Navy, where he met his wife Delores Lopomiski of Milwaukee, Wis.

Survivors are his wife Delores; a son, Brian of North Prairie; daughters Julie (Tim) Starr and Tracy (Mark) Phillips of Milwaukee; four grandsons; sisters Gerry Reed, Thelma (Marvin) Kellogg, Pauline (Elmer) Tupy of Charles City and Beverly (Duance) Kollman of Wabasha, Minn.; sister-in-law Avis Taylor of Waterville, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calvin was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother Jesse and sisters Ruth and Betty.


James J. ‘Jim’ Gebel

James J. “Jim” Gebel, 75, of Charles City, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City under the care of Iowa Hospice.

A funeral Mass for Jim Gebel will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries and Monsignor Stanley Hayek will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3-7 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held a 6 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

James Joseph Gebel was born Aug. 21, 1933, at Alta Vista, the son of Louis and Marie (Kolbet) Gebel. He graduated in 1951 from Saint William High School in Alta Vista and attended Iowa State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Euchre School. Jim proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On April 18, 1964, he was united in marriage to Colleen Welch at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. During his career Jim worked for the Howard County Creamery, Hudson Dairy, White Farm Equipment Company and retired from Sara Lee. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he attended daily Mass regularly and the Knights of Columbus. He also belonged to the Elks Lodge, Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion, Cedar Ridge Golf Course and the Stateline Cyclone Club. His interests included golfing, fishing, boating at Lansing, going on bus trips, wintering in Florida, and doing yard work - paying special attention to his roses. Jim always looked forward to those times he could share his life with all of his family but the grandchildren had a special place in his heart.

Living family members include his wife, Colleen Gebel of Charles City; three children, Suzanne Gebel of Urbandale; Patrick (Shira) Gebel of Charles City and Beth (Scott) Hoppel of Osage; five grandchildren: Brandt, Elliott and Sadie Gebel, and Nicholas and Katie Hoppel; three brothers, Tom (Marian) Gebel of New Hampton, Don (Marcy) Gebel of Mason City and Dan (Dorothy) Gebel of Clear Lake; a sister, Barb (Jerry) O’Donnell of Cresco; and 15 nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Joseph Gebel.

Wilma ‘Aubry’ Ethun

MINOCQUA, WIs. — Wilma A. ‘Aubry’ Ethun, 66, of Winchester, Wis., and formerly of Eau Claire, Wis., and Charles City, passed away on Aug. 3, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer at her northwoods home she loved so much and shared with her much loved husband, Rolf Ethun, of nearly 10 years.

A service of remembrance and joy will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Minocqua, Wis.

Willy was born on Oct. 27, 1942, to Gallus and Anna Heit in Charles City. No eulogy can do justice to Willy's love of life and everyone she met, her ever present smile and the way she lived each and every day. She was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Minocqua, the Winchester Women's Civic Club and the Winchester Lions Club.

She is survived by her first husband, Jerold Aubry of South Beloit, Ill.; husband Rolf of Winchester; daughters Ann (Brad) Oleneck of Westminster, Calif., and Michelle (David Personius) Ethun of Duluth, Minn.; a son, Andy Aubry of Winchester; brother Don (Joyce) Heit of Westmont, Ill., and sister Mary Beth Couser of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren Shelby, Scott, Forest, Hans and Hjelle, the joys of her life; along with niece and nephews Liz, Chris and Brad.

Since Willy's life was so full of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Ascension Lutheran Church, Ministry Home Care-Doctor Kate Hospice, or the charity of your choice.

Iola S. Harrington

LEROY, Minn. — Funeral services for Iola S. Harrington, 87, formerly of LeRoy and Grand Meadow, will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2009, at the LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy with the Rev Thomas Kolden officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Beaver Township Fillmore County.

Friends may call at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. 

Iola died at Spring Valley Senior Living, where she had been for one day.

Iola Shirley Harrington was born July 11, 1922, in Corning, Minn., to Sanford Carlson and Ida Williamson Carlson. She attended school through the eighth grade and was united in marriage to Everett E. Harrington on Sept. 21, 1940, in Osage. Together they farmed in Beaver Township. Iola was also a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting animals, table cloths, doilies and many other items. She liked doing word search puzzles and watching Wheel of Fortune and the Minnesota Twins. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and her lazy boy recliner.

She is survived by her six children: Barb (Loren) Berge of Osage, Dick (Sandra) Harrington of Charles City, Bob (Pat) Harrington of LeRoy, Eileen (Roger E.) Tienter of Grand Meadow, Bonnie (Glen) McKenna of Chester and Randy (Debbie ) Harrington of Rochester, Minn.; 26 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Lorna Stern of Rockford; a sister-in-law, Lois Carlson of Rochester; a brother-in-law, Butch Mayzlik of Austin, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 2, 1978; a granddaughter, Lori; a great grandson, Andy; three brothers; Polly, Sally and Roger; and two sisters, Ruth and Donna Mae.

Gladys M. Dahlen

Gladys M. Dahlen, 92, of Charles City and formerly of New Hampton died on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at her home from natural causes.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor Glenn Smith officiating. Burial will be in New Hampton Cemetery with Jason Brincks, Mark Dahlen, Joshua Dahlen, Michael Givens, LeRoy Brincks and John Rankin serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.conway-kolbetfuneralhome.com.

Gladys Marie Dahlen was born on Oct. 8, 1916, to Martin and Ida Derganzin New Hampton. She attended school in Lawler where Gladys was an exceptional student. She then cared for her ailing mother and was a housekeeper for local families. Gladys was united in marriage to John O. Dahlenon June 29, 1937, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed north of New Hampton where they raised two children, Joyce and Gene. They later farmed near Hawkeye and when John retired in 1970 they moved into New Hampton. Upon John’s death on Oct. 20, 1980, Gladys moved to Charles City where she has lived ever since.

Gladys enjoyed playing cards with her family and playing checkers with her grandchildren. In the summer she enjoyed going to fairs and festivals in the areawhere she won stuffed animals to add to her collection. Gladys was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Hampton.

Gladys is survived by her children, Joyce Hinz of Charles City and Gene (Barbara) Dahlen of Waterloo; grandchildren Paula Givens of Mason City, Jason Brincks of Charles City, Mark (Angela) Dahlen of North Liberty and Melissa (Mark) Dawson of Highlands Ranch, Col.; great-grandchildren Joshua and Megan Dahlen, Michael and Rachael Givens, Drew and Amanda Dawson, and Aaron and Sara Hudson; and great great-grandson Nicholas Kearns.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband John; two brothers Peter and Joseph Derganz; and son-in-law Dale Hinz.

Alvin Paul Janssen

Alvin Paul Janssen, 72, of Dover, AR, went to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock. 

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Humphrey Chapel. The Rev. Todd Steffy will officiate. Burial will be at McFadden Cemetery at Dover by Humphrey Funeral Service. 

The son of Paul and Fern Johnson Janssen, Alvin was born May 26, 1937, in Nashua, Iowa. He was a 1955 graduate of New Hampton High School and went on to become the owner and operator of Janssen Engineering in Dover. He enjoyed working on tractors, cars, four wheeling, working outside and spending time with his family and attending grandchildren’s events.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister.

Living family members include: his wife, Patricia Janssen of Dover; two daughters, Robin Weehunt and husband James of Russellville, Ark., and Renee Springer of Mason City; three sons, Rick Janssen and wife Sharon of Zumbro Falls, Minn., Ron Janssen and wife Kelley of Dover and Rusty Janssen of Dover; 19 grandchildren: Sidney, Corey, Heather, Morgan, Ryan, Amber, Rocky, Shaun, Susan, Shane, Scott, Mary, Cris, Emilie, Alan, Ben, Jennifer, Bailey and Jacob; six great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Ava, Jacob, Tristin, Shelby, and Kayden; two sisters, Janice Kraus of Mason City and Jean Janssen of Fort Madison; and a brother, Arlen Janssen and his wife Mary, of Nashua.

Janice Lee Lessin

ALBIA — Janice Lee Lessin, 56, of Albia died Sunday Aug. 9, 2009. at her residence in Albia. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Albia, with Rev. Sara Quigley officiating. Funeral services will also be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City at 10 a.m., on Monday, Aug. 17. Burial will follow services on Monday at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, at the Winfield Funeral Home in Albia. Janice’s family will be present from 5-8 p.m. Friday evening

Janice was born in New Hampton on April 9, 1953, to Harold Raymond “H.R.” and Ethel (Hobert) Lessin. Jan attended and graduated from Charles City High School, Class of 1971. After high school, Jan went to the University of Iowa and graduated with a teaching degree in music.

Jan worked her 30-plus years teaching career in Monroe County. She retired in May of 2009. She was a volunteer for Hospice of Monroe County, she taught private music lessons at her piano studio she enjoyed quilting, her cats, playing in Woody’s Big Band and vacationing in Grand Marais, Minn. Janice was a accomplished musician, vocalist and harpist. 

 Janice was preceded in death by her parents and several infant siblings.

Janice is survived by one brother, Byron Lessin and his wife Pam of Charles City; her aunt, Laurnetta Van Heuvelen of Charles City; one niece, Sara Lessin; one nephew, Tony Lessin and many cousins.

Memorials have been established to the Janice Lessin Memorial.

Violet C. Corbin

Violet C. Corbin, 94, of Floyd, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 11, 2009, at the Oelwein Health Care in Oelwein.

Funeral services for Violet Corbin will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Wesleyan Church in Charles City. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday.

Violet C. Corbin, 94, of Floyd, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 11, 2009, at the Oelwein Health Care in Oelwein.

Funeral services for Violet Corbin will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Wesleyan Church in Charles City. Pastor James Turner and Pastor Dennis Bachman will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday.

Violet Catherine Steele was born Nov. 30, 1914, at Rockford, the daughter of Charles E. and Esther (Zimmer) Steele. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1931 and later attended Cedar Falls, Mason City Jr. College, Drake and Upper Iowa University. On June 25, 1938, she was united in marriage to Lane H. Corbin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a teacher in rural Iowa schools for 25 years. Violet taught in Nora Springs, Ionia and most of her career in Alta Vista. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Charles City. Her interests included gardening, growing roses, teaching children and spending time with her family.

Living family members include her two daughters, Cheryl (John) Ransom of Oelwein and Diane (Rev. James) Turner of Tijeras, N.M.; seven grandchildren: Steve (Pam) Carey, Debra Norris, DeeAnn (Erik) Crandall, Scott (Lori) Carey, Kim (Jim) Winters, Ryan (Davina) Turner and Kerensa (Jason) McFrederick; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Joan Holtz; two sisters, Mina Smith and Leona Abrams; and four brothers, Raymond Steele, Clyde Steele, Darrell Steele and Wallace Steele.

Harold Dean ‘Hal’ Nolting

NEW HAMPTON — Harold Dean “Hal” Nolting, 72, of New Hampton, died Friday morning, Aug. 14, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, with Pastor James Mann officiating. Burial with military rites will be at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday at the union Cemetery, Aurora. Visitation will be on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, and for an hour prior to the services on Tuesday. 

He was born on Oct. 13, 1936, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. The firstborn son of Harold Paul and Estella Grace (Owen) Nolting, Hal was raised on a farm three miles west of Dunkerton and in the fall of 1942, he began school at Dunkerton Consolidated School, graduating in the spring of 1955.

In the fall of 1955, Hal enrolled at Upper Iowa University where he took mostly Business Administration courses. In the spring of 1958 he bought a gas station in Waterloo. In June of 1959 his mother, Estella, died of heart failure. On Sept. 6 , 1959, Harold was united in marriage to Georgia Mardell Reed at Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette, Iowa, and they moved into a house on Vermont St. in Waterloo. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 – 1962.

He worked for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Companies, had owned several gas stations over the years, and retired from Bill Cowell Ford in Hudson in 2001.

Hal married Norma Bradford on May 23, 2008, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

During his life, Hal was an avid motorcyclist covering over a half million miles, and visiting 39 states over 34 years. He enjoyed woodworking, and would have been a carpenter if he hadn’t been a mechanic. He also enjoyed photography and fast cars.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, of New Hampton; his brother, Donald Lee Nolting of Waterloo; and Norma’s brothers and sisters.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1959, his father in 1995, his step-mother in 2001, and his first wife, Georgia, in 2007.

Dennis Wayne Boggess, 60, died Monday Aug. 17, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City.

 A Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday in the Chapel at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City.

 Dennis was born Sept. 8, 1948, in Charles City, the son of Glenn E. and Katherine Mackamul Boggess. He was a graduate of Charles City High School in 1967. On June 22, 1974 he was united in marriage to Kimberly Paulsen.

 He had served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war.

 He had owned and operated Denny’s Auto Body in Floyd and Cedar Falls for several years. Denny enjoyed fast cars and snowmobiles. He was a lifetime member of AMVETS.

 Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Hull of Mason City and Carey Thompson of Laramie, Wy.; two sons, Brent Boggess and Dana Anders, both of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Shirley Moyle of Chickasaw; and a brother Kenneth Boggess of Charles City. Ten grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Wilbur and Carl.

William Laverne Wilson was born April 30, 1925, at White River, S.D., the son of Clarence and Barbara (McNair) Wilson. He attended the Colwell Schools. In 1950, he was united in marriage to Frances Temple. Bill farmed north of Floyd since 1942. He also worked at White Farm as a machinist. He was a life time member of the National Rifle Association. His interests included attending auctions, fabricating and repairing machinery and visiting with family and friends.

Living family members include Frances Wilson of Tulsa, Ok.; his six children: Rodney (Susan) Wilson of Miami, Ok., Kathleen Wilson of Vancouver, Wash., Sheryleen (Bill) Prewett of Miami, Ok., Randy Wilson of Floyd, Kevin (Annette) Wilson of Shell Rock and Brian (Paula) Wilson of Tulsa, Ok.; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Iverson of S.D. and Barbara (Dutch) Mannetter of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, W. Stanley Wilson; five sisters and three brothers.

Grace Edna Stiles, 81, of 807 5th St., Charles City, died Monday, August 17, 2009 at Cedar Health in Charles City.

 A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 6th Street, Rudd, with Reverend Wendy Johannesen officiating. A private family burial will be held at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

 Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs.

Grace was born on March 26, 1928, in Charles City, the daughter of Willard and Golda (Wilson) Hennick. She graduated from Floyd High School. On Dec. 13, 1945, Grace married Kenneth Stiles, in Austin, Minnesota, and to this union five children were born.

Grace worked side-by-side with her husband on the farm and in their business for many years. She and her husband Red were co-owners of the Rudd Lumber and Hardware, where she worked as a bookkeeper. She also had her own business utilizing her talent in wallpapering and painting, but she felt her greatest responsibility was that of homemaker. Grace was an active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church.

 Grace loved to cook and enjoyed sharing her baked goods with others, she was an avid card player who could play all-night long, a voracious reader, a sports enthusiast, especially when the Iowa Hawkeyes were playing, and a talented quilter. Grace was a star basketball player and transferred her affection for the game from a player to a fan. She loved watching her kids and grandkids participate in activities and would never miss an event. Grace’s grandkids always loved how fun and witty she was even in her final days, but above all she will forever be remembered for her generosity and kindheartedness.

 She is survived by her children: William (Michelle) Stiles of Trabuco, Calif., Randall (Kay) Stiles of Rockwell, Sue Ann (Steven) Lockwood of Greenville, S.C., and Michael (Jackie) Stiles of Rudd; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her brothers, Elden Hennick of Charles City, Bud (Marie) Hennick of Charles City and Ronald (Sandy) Hennick of Floyd; her sisters, Vera Cerwinskie of Nashua and Shirley Erbe of Maxwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her son Kenneth; and her sister Wonda Scott.

George Allen Christiansen

NORA SPRINGS — George Allen Christiansen, 68, of 115 South Hawkeye, Nora Springs, died Tuesday, Aug.18, 2009 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

 A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Aug.21, at the Nora Springs Care Center, 907 West Congress St., Nora Springs, with a time of sharing following the service. Pastor Ed Bard will officiate the service. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

George was born on April 15, 1941, in Osage, the son of Carl and Myrtle (Hanson) Christiansen. He was baptized and confirmed at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage. He attended Rudd Grad School and graduated from Osage High School in 1959. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in chemical engineering and worked for DuPont Chemical Company in Clinton, Iowa for several years. He was married to and later divorced Carol Sours of Nora Springs. He went on several mission trips for the Church Universal and Triumphant, and then returned to help his parents on the farm, also working for some of the neighbors. He was always a caring neighbor and friend.

Taking after his father and uncles, George was an excellent bowler and horseshoe player. He took over management of horseshoe tournaments at the Mitchell County Fair and Nora Springs Buffalo Days after his father passed away. He loved band music and played the trombone in high school. He enjoyed attending the Mason City Municipal Band concerts on Sunday evenings in East Park. Some of his favorite TV programs were historical documentaries on Iowa Public TV.

 George is survived by his sisters: Nancy (Dale) Folkerts of Rudd, Dorothy (Francis) Schmidt of Osage, Helen Randolph of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law Barbara (Paul) Christiansen, Cedar Rapids; uncles and aunts: Arnold Hanson of Cedar Rapids, Olaf and Dot Hanson of San Jose, Calif., Frances (Larry) Christiansen, of St. Ansgar and AnnaBelle (Glen) Christiansen of Nora Springs; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul and several aunts and uncles.

Betty LaVonne Hesse was born May 13, 1933, at Shell Rock, the daughter of Andrew and Ruth (Cutler) Hesse. She attended the Marble Rock School. On Aug.9, 1949, she was united in marriage to Alvin “Bud” Dean Kock at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marble Rock. Betty was a devoted military wife moving to numerous countries and all over the United States while Bud served 21 years in the United States Air Force. For four years Betty and Bud owned and operated the B & B Tap and later the Family Café. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marble Rock and American Legion Auxiliary Post # 387. Her interests included working with flowers, gardening, being outside, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include her three children: Gary (Jodi) Hesse of Sellerburg, Ind., Deborah Kock of Woodward and Beverly Knecht of Marble Rock; two grandsons, Nicholaus Hesse of Mason City and Jon Hesse of Sellersburg, Ind.; eight great grandchildren: Kaylah Demaray, Logan Demaray, Jenna Knecht, Wesley Knecht, Tobin Hesse, Conner Hesse, Dezi Grant and Peyton Hesse; a sister, Phyllis Willmoth of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Marvin (Shirley) Hesse of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

Roy Trent Holland was born and raised in southwest Iowa on a farm near Dexter. Holland graduated from Iowa State University. He served in the United States Army. He edited the 24th Division Newspaper in Germany. Roy founded the first personnel recruiting firm for agri-business. He spent 41 years with his firm, Agri-Careers Inc. in New Hampton.

 Roy was a 25 year member of Rotary, serving as past president. He received the “Service Above Self Award” Roy enjoyed traveling and exploring other countries.

 Roy is survived by his daughter, Shana (Dean) Lair of Charles City; four grandchildren: Karly Holland, Jordyn, Ryeleigh and Wesley Lair; a special friend, Dorothy Beyer; one brother, Glenn (Dee) Holland of Eagan, Minn.; two sisters, Irene (Don) Newby of Bondurant and Elaine (Jack) Savage of Orland Park, Ill.; along with many nieces and nephews.

 Roy was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Reed Holland.

Willis D. Schmidt, 83, of 705 8th Ave., Charles City died Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2009, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Willis was born on Sept. 20, 1925, near Nashua in Chickasaw County the son of Otto R. and Bertha Ida (Ferch) Schmidt. He graduated from the rural school system. Prior to his military service he met his future wife while both were actors in a play. They also enjoyed roller—skating. On June 22, 1944, he was united in marriage to Helen Litterer and they were married in the home of Helen’s parents. To this union were born four children. Willis was also baptized and confirmed at the Nashua United Church of Christ in Nashua. He served his country in the Army from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1947. He served in Germany. Upon his return, he and Helen lived all their married lives in Charles City where he was an Inspector for White Farm for 35 years. Willis enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers. They played card games of all types and camping. Helen and Willis attended Blue Grass Festivals, traveling and spending time with the family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Willis enjoyed going up North for fishing trips and was known as a practical joker. Willis was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, a life member of Post 3914 of the VFW, the senior center and 1315 of the UAW union.
Those thankful in sharing Willis’s life include his wife Helen of 65 years; two daughters, Beverly and her husband Elmer Reints of Shell Rock and Gloria and her husband Jack Hulbert of Charles City; one son, Gary and his wife Cathy Schmidt, Marble Rock; seven grandchildren and 14 great—grandchildren, along with eight sister—in—laws: Dorothy, Judith, Margaret and Lois Schmidt and Leona Howe, Dorothy Schmidt, Ruby (Bob) Obermier and Tilleen Litterer.

His parents; an infant son Bryan; two sisters, Lucille Roth and Glendora “Curly” Ouderkerk; seven brothers: Lloyd, Lawrence, Melvin, Harlan, Otto Jr., Clarence and Raymond; along with brother—in—laws Clarence Litterer and Alton Howe preceded Willis in death.

Marguerite Curtis, 89, of Coralville, formerly of Charles City, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at the Lantern Park Nursing Home in Coralville.

Marguerite Lucile Peterson Curtis was born April 7,1920, at Nashua, the daughter of Bartlett and Sarah (Hicks) Peterson. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1938. On April 2, 1939, she was united in marriage to Edward “Ted” Curtis at Charles City. Marguerite worked at the Oliver Corporation and when they purchased what would become Ted’s Auto Electric, she was the secretary bookkeeper from 1962-1999. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Armstrong Circle, Soroptimists, Pythian Sisters and Charles City Women’s Club. Her interests included reading, and antiquing with her specialty being Fenton glassware and miniature oil lamps. Marguerite was a seamstress for many years, making draperies for Sylvester’s Furniture as well as doing alterations and sewing wedding gowns. She will also be remembered for the candy she made and gave as gifts, a tradition that has carried down to her grandson.

Living family members include two daughters, Sheila (Lewis) Wright of North Liberty and Terri (Paul) Kidd of La Jolla, Calif.; a grandson, Robert Kidd; and a son-in-law, Charles Greaser of Harleysville, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Barbara Greaser; and three sisters, Geneva Sleeper, Bonnie Blanchard and Lillian Jacobs.

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Arthur H. Gordon, 78, of Crawfordsville, passed away at 10:47 a.m. on Tuesday. Aug. 25, 2009, at St. Clare Med Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Burkhart Funeral Home with Rodger Ward, Jr. presiding. Burial with military rites by the American Legion and VFW will be at Mace Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born March 29, 1931, in Lyle, Minn., to Arthur W. and Ella (Hagerude) Gordon. He was married to Florence Herman, his wife of 56 years, in Yuma, Ariz., on March 25, 1953.

He joined the Navy in 1951 and is an Atomic Veteran, having participated in Operation Ivy and Operation Castle in the Marshall Islands for atomic and hydrogen bomb testing. Arthur was aboard the U. S. Curtiss AV-4. He grew up in Northern Iowa and settled in Minnesota after he was discharged. He ran his own construction company in Anoka, Minn., and the family moved to Indiana in 1972.

Arthur was a professional semi driver for Coast-to-Coast and Wal-Mart, earning his master truck driver certificate in 1998. He is a member of the American Legion Post 72 and served as the Sergeant at Arms for the USS Curtiss Association.

He is survived by his wife Florence; two daughters, Sandra (Bill) Henderson and Dawn (Ron) Parry; two sons, Paul (Dianne) Gordon and David Gordon; 10 grandchildren: Joshua Morrissette, Joey Henderson, Jennifer Edmiston, Jeremy Gordon, Crystal (Jarrod) Zachary, Amber Kelly, Toby McCullough, Brandon Gordon, Tressa Gordon and Samantha Gordon; two great-grandchildren, Persephanie Rivers and Hunter Zachary; a sister, Mary Ellen (Richard) Sandquist of Lac du Flambeau, Wis.; and a brother, Roger (Gloria) Gordon of Bowstring, Minn.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

OSAGE — Leonard Joyal, age 76, of Osage, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. 
Private services will be held.
Leonard is survived by one sister, Norma Jean Kuykendall of Floyd; five nephews and one niece.
The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, (641)732-3706, is in charge of the arrangements.
