Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009.

Kenneth (Ken) D. Glandon

The journey of this life ended for Kenneth (Ken) D. Glandon, 79, of Charles City, on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City after a seven-year battle with prostate cancer.
Funeral services for Kenneth Glandon will be held 10:30 a.m. today at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City.  Pastor Okitakoyi (Michel) Lundula of the Nashua United Methodist Church will officiate. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.  Inurnment will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.
Friends may call today an hour prior to the service at the church.
Ken was born July 3, 1929, to Loran and Ella (White) Glandon on a farm near Webster, Iowa, in Keokuk County. He grew up on the farm and went to school at the country school called Webster High. Ken was a good athlete and competitive in basketball and baseball. He graduated from high school at the age of 16.
Ken was a proud military man having served in the United States Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller from 1951 through 1954. He attended reunions for his squadron, the 735th Aircraft Control &Warning (AC&W) Squadron, as recent as 2008. After his discharge from the military he attended the American Technical Institute in Des Moines for 18 months.
On June 30, 1957, Ken married “the cute little waitress from Eddie’s café,” Pauline (Gillespie), at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They had three children and lived in Charles City their entire married lives. However, they also wintered in Bartow, Fla., the past 12 years and made many good friends there.
Ken came to Charles City to work at Goodyear Tire Company and eventually started his own business, an electronic sales and service store named Ken’s TV. Ken and Pauline retired April 1, 1986. He traveled extensively after the service by himself in Europe and in the United States with his wife after retirement. Ken had been to 49 of the 50 states. He never went to Alaska and didn’t have a desire to go.
Ken was known for being a hard worker. Most people work to live, but Ken lived to work. It didn’t matter if it was gardening and mowing outside, repairing television sets or fixing anything that was broken. Ken loved to work and about the only time he was happy not working was when he was at a sporting event or watching one on television. Ken was an avid sports fan. He loved all Charles City Comets sports, especially Comette Softball, and any sport his grandchildren were in. He was also a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan. He attended both of the Hawkeyes’ recent Outback Bowl appearances (in 2004 and 2008). He was such a Twins fan that he had been known to plan his whole Sunday afternoon around a game. He tolerated the Vikings but really became a Buccaneers fan after spending so much time in Florida.
Those who have been honored to share in Ken’s life and who will miss him greatly are: his wife of 51 years, Pauline; his children: Diane (Dan) Meyer, Morgan (Matt Jensen) and Kirby; Janice Glandon, her husband Jeffrey Blackley and their children Alexa Carey (Terry Hjelle), Max Carey, Derrick Blackley, Crystal Blackley and Grant Blackley; Dan (Connie) Glandon, Lindsey, Cassie and Jason; his former son-in-law, Bob Carey; sister-in-law Iva Glandon; and many very special nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Karen, Russ and Kia Weldon for the extra care they gave while Ken was in Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bob and Raymond; and one sister, Arlene.
Memorials may be directed to the family and will be disbursed to Ken’s favorite charities.
