Korine K. Winders

Korine K. Winders, 55, of 405 Richings St., Charles City, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Officiating will be Pastor Debra Lincoln of Jordan River and Calwell UCC churches. A gathering for friends and family will be from 5-8 p.m., Thursday evening at the funeral home and again one hour prior to services. She was cremated at Fullerton Funeral Home and no inurnment is planned at this time. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.Fullertonfh.com

Korine was one of three daughters born to Milo and Lorraine (Schuler) Schwarck on Jan. 20, 1954 at Eldora. She graduated from Riceville High School and from NICC College in Calmer with her registered nursing degree. For over 20 years she worked for Mercy Hospital in Dubuque. She was united in marriage to Mark Scheffert on March 22, 1974 and later to John Winders on Jan. 9, 1993. She lived in Dubuque for the later part of her of life, then moved to Charles City in March of this year. She attended church at Jordan River and Colwell UCC. She enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River with family and friends. Taking annual trips down to Mexico and the Carribean. She was a huge Minnesota Vikings fan and in the summer enjoyed tending to her flowers and vegetable gardens.

Korine is survived by her two daughters, Adria and her husband Joe Pierce and their daughter Alexis Pierce of Marion. and Amanda Scheffert and her special friend Brian Engelhardt, along with their two sons Andrew and Jonha; two sisters, Jeanine (Gordon) Lockie of Elma and Christine (Greg) Pitts of Elk Grove, Calif.

Her mother and father preceded her in death.

Madeline B. Jacobs, 90, of Charles City, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

A funeral service will be held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. A visitation will be held today from 5-8 p.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., in Charles City. Madeline was born on March 29, 1919, in rural Nashua, the daughter of L. Howard and Iva (Coffman) Tefft. She was raised in Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1936. She and her family moved to Chicago in 1943 where she lived for two years. Madeline was united in marriage to Harold W. Jacobs on Feb. 11, 1945, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in Charles City. Harold passed away in 1990.

Madeline was an active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Church Circle and had also sung in the church choir. She also was a volunteer for Hospice and Meals on Wheels, and also played the piano at the Chautauqua Guest Homes for many years. She was an avid pianist and reader. She also enjoyed painting and bird watching.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: William (Kathy) Jacobs of Charles City, Allen (Peggy) Jacobs of Jefferson and Marilyn Jacobs (Ed Brown) of Overland Park, Kan.; grandchildren: Brad (Dina) Boehmer, Lee Jacobs, Adam Jacobs, Grant (Cassie) Jacobs, Paul (Ashley) Jacobs, Nathaniel Jacobs and Elizabeth Jacobs; great-grandchildren: Corey Boehmer, Nicolette Boehmer, Megan Boehmer, Dana and Josephine; and a brother, William (Lucille) Tefft of Newton, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; and sister-in-law, Rose Tefft.

NEW HAMPTON — John Joseph Eschweiler, 85, of New Hampton died Monday Nov. 30, 2009, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph Center in New Hampton.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton.

Lyle C. Wedeking

WAUKON — Lyle C. Wedeking, 83, of Waukon, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date in Clarksville. Friends may greet the family for an hour before the services at the church on Saturday. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is handling arrangements.

Lyle Carl Edward Wedeking was born on Aug. 21, 1926, in rural Clarksville, the son of Emil Carl and Louise Hattie (Wilken) Wedeking. He was baptized and confirmed at the Pleasant Valley United Church of Christ in rural Clarksville and attended the Clarksville Schools. Lyle farmed with his parents east of Clarksville following his schooling. On Oct. 8, 1946, he married Dorothy Mae Hurd at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed in Butler and Chickasaw Counties until 1964, when he moved to Waukon where he owned and operated the Surge Dairy Equipment dealership for many years. After retiring from the Surge business, he was a salesman for Pladsen Motors, worked at Cunningham Hardware and drove truck for RC Tires, all in Waukon.

Lyle was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. He enjoyed fishing with his brother, children, and grandchildren and pheasant hunting in the Clarksville and Nashua areas. He and Dorothy were loyal followers of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. Lyle enjoyed bowling and sponsored a team in the local leagues for many years. His favorite times were those he spent with his family.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Waukon; a daughter, Karen (Jim) Norton of Decorah and their children: Terry and Travis Norton and Tanya (Kevin) Donlan; a son, Stan (Judy) Wedeking of Minnesota City, Minn., and their children: Chuck, Brenda and Steve (Kariann) Wedeking; five great-grandchildren: Bailey, Brandon, Taylor, Garrett and Robert; and a brother, Gene (Delores) Wedeking of Nashua. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Lyle’s grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers.

Betty A. Larson

Betty A. Larson, 80, of Charles City, died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 5, 2009, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. A memorial Mass for Betty Larson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Private family inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Betty Ann Dugan was born July 26, 1929, at Meyer, the daughter of Charles and Gertrude (Meyer) Dugan. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School and later attended the University of Iowa School of Library Science. On Sept. 22, 1951, she was united in marriage to Calvin Larson. She was employed at the Charles City Library, manager of the Charles City Country Club and catering. Betty was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Jude Circle and Rosary Society. Her interests included reading, bus trips, bowling and family gatherings.

Living family members include her husband, Calvin Larson of Charles City; three children, Christine (John) Gohr of Charles City, Tim (Sheryl) Larson of Omaha, Nebr. and Teresa (Brian) Carr of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, Charles (Danielle) Gohr, Crecia Gohr and fiance, Jason Brooks, Adam Bryngelson, Tim (Melissa) Bryngelson, Maria Shipley, Jeff (Tara) Carr and Christina Carr and her fiance Tyson Roberts; five great grandchildren, Michael, Cameron and Lillian Bryngelson, Wade and Will Shipley; sister, Patricia Scheffert of Guttenberg; four sisters-in-law, Sandy Dugan of Muscatine, Phyllis Dugan of Waterloo, Stella Larson of Charles City and Mildred Larson of Albuquerque, N.M.; and many nieces; nephews; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, James and Daniel Dugan.

Marcus Hermann

ROCKFORD — Marcus Hermann, 91, formerly of Rockford and Marble Rock, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 1st Ave. NW, in Rockford, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, with Father Jim Dubert as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. A visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with a Scripture Service to follow at 7:30 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the family. Marcus was born in rural Marble Rock on Feb. 19, 1918, the son of John and Louise (Vala) Hermann. He grew up in the Marble Rock/Roseville area, where he farmed. In March of 1941, he was inducted in to the Army, completing his training in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. He was among the first group of Americans that entered World War II. As part of the 34th Division, 168th Infantry, Headquarters Company, he served his country in Algeria, Tunisia and Italy. Marcus was honorably discharged in June of 1945, achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was united in marriage to Anna Mae Crahan on Jan. 20, 1948, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. In 1966, Marcus opened up his own repair shop in Marble Rock, Hermann Repair. At the age of 50, he began drag racing, a hobby which he would compete in until he was 72. In 1973, his son, would join him in the repair business. They continued to work together until Marcus’ retirement in 1984. Anna Mae and Marcus moved to Rockford in 1999 and would continue to live there until 2005 when Marcus moved to the care center in Nora Springs.

Marcus was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus and was very active in the Marble Rock American Legion Post 387. He attended many army reunions and participated in many parades during his lifetime. He also enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors and was very proud of his B and G tractors. Most of all, Marcus loved spending time with his family.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Anna Mae; sons, Bill (Pam) Hermann of Rockford and Joe (Karen) Hermann of State Center; grandchildren, Jeff (Angie) Hermann, Brian (Tonya) Hermann and Rob Hermann; great grandchildren, Noel and Derrick Marzen, Colbie Johnson and Carter and Bailey Hermann; and sisters, Mary (Leonard) Greiner of Iowa Falls and Margaret Hermann of Rochester, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Elaine Federhart, 93, of Charles City, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elaine Federhart will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the First Congregational Church. Pastor Phil Corr will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Elaine G. Bennett Federhart was born May 9, 1916, at Sioux City, the daughter of Miles and Edna (Sterling) Bennett. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1934. On May 15, 1938 Elaine was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Hugo Federhart at the Mayflower Congregational Church in Sioux City. Elaine worked for a Sioux City insurance company during WW II while Hugo served in the United States Army. In 1976, they moved to Charles City where they would spend the rest of their lives together. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, where she shared her love of music as a member of the choir, the Women’s Fellowship and the Tuesday Morning Bible Study. Elaine was also a P.E.O. sister and had been a Pink Lady at the Floyd County Medical Center. She also appeared on stage more than once with the Dakota County Players, a theater group she helped to found, both in musical and comic roles. Elaine will be remembered for her cooking skills including her excellent pie making. They also enjoyed camping out as a family where she became an expert in the use of a Coleman gas camp stove.

Living family members include her husband, Hugo Federhart of Charles City; two sons, James (Linda) Federhart of Madison, Wis. and Douglas (Stuart Holland) Federhart of Minneapolis, Minn.; two granddaughters, Lisa (Travis) Janssen and Katy (Rob) Yang; and an adoptive grandson, Pablo Lopez Arrieta.

Special thanks from the family to 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Floyd County Medical Center, Dr. David Schweizer, Hospice of North Iowa, First Congregational Church and pastor Dr. Phil Corr, and the many friends whom Elaine enjoyed for so many years.

He died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Merrill Gershom Smith Jr.

Merrill Gershom Smith Jr.

Merrill Gershom Smith Jr., 92 died on Thursday, Nov. 12, in Orlando, Fla.

He was born Dec.9, 1916, in Charles City, the son of Calla White Smith and Merrill G. Smith, Sr. He graduated from Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Ill., in 1934 and from Grinnell College, in Grinnell, in 1938 with a degree in business.

On March 4, 1939 he married Lorene Schoenmann at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines. They were married for 67 years until Lorene’s death in 2006.

Following their marriage Merrill and Lorene moved to Charles City, where Merrill worked with his father and brother in the family owned Smith Lumber Company. Merrill became sole owner of the company until its destruction in the 1968 tornado. After the tornado, he worked in Real Estate from 1972 until he retired in 1983. He has been a farm manager since 1975.

Merrill had been a member of the Charles City Lions Club for 59 years and was president in 1963-1964. He received an Award of Merit for 50 years of service. He belonged to the BPO Elks Lodge for 64 years and was a member of the Charles City Chamber of Commerce and an Ambassadors Club member. Merrill was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner. He was on the Board of Directors of Citizens National Bank for 29 years. Merrill belonged to the Congregational Church of Charles City and was on the Board of Trustees.

Merrill grew up on Blunt Street in Charles City and moved from Second Avenue back to Blunt Street in 1949. In 2000, Merrill and Lorene moved to Yalaha, Fla., where they lived by the lake until their move to Lakeport Square in Leesburg, Fla., in 2005.  They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand and Alaska and they spent several winters in Hawaii, their favorite home away from home.

Merrill’s hobbies included wood-working, golf and fishing. His grandchildren called him Grandpa Lucky as did others in Charles City who knew him well. He loved taking his grandchildren and his children to coffee at the Uptown Cafe. He was a loving and supportive father and always looked forward to family visits in Florida when he would share stories of his childhood and memories of his friends.

Living family members include: a daughter, Diane of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; and a son, Jim of Hotchkiss Col.; five grandchildren: Mark of North Creek, N.Y., Todd and wife Alice of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Anne and husband Ezra of Union, Maine, Calla of Hotchkiss, Col., and David and wife Tiffany of Denver, Col.; three great-grandchildren: Mazy of Union, Maine and Alyssa and Caelin of Denver, Col.; and two nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his parents, his devoted wife Lorene, and his brother, Chandler C. Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Nashua, with Msgr. Stanley Hayek celebrating the Mass.

Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Nashua with Leon Marker, Troy Marker, Craig Marker, LaVern Hon, Lee Biretz and Paul Schultz as pallbearers. Lyle Marker is an honorary pallbearer.

Barbara B. Marker was born Jan. 15, 1909, in St. Lucas, the daughter of Jacob and Constance (Meylinger) Biretz. Barbara was married to Henry N. Pierre. The couple never had any children. Barbara and Henry worked for the McGregor Family in their farming operation and whenever possible enjoyed the outdoors together. Henry died in 1984. Barbara later married John Marker. She was 77 years old when she remarried and enjoyed riding motorcycle with John. Also in her free time she enjoyed crocheting. Her second husband, John died in 1992.

Survivors include a step-son, Lyle (Diane) Marker of Rockford; and three step-grandsons, Leon (Vicky) Marker, Troy Marker all of Rochford, and Craig Marker of Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, five brothers and three sisters.


Philip L. Bork

EVANSDALE — Philip L. Bork, 68, of Evansdale, died at home Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

He was born Aug. 2, 1941, in Charles City, son of Alfred and Ruth Volbrecht Bork. He married Marilyn Bentley March 14, 1962 in Preston, Minn.

Mr. Bork was employed as a mold and patternmaker at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls for 36 years, retiring in 2003.

Survivors include his wife of Evansdale; his mother, of Charles City; one son, Brad L. (Christine) Bork of Longview, Wash.; one daughter Corinne K. GREENE — James L. Nixt, 57, of Greene, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for James Nixt will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. Monsignor Walter Brunkan will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery at Greene.

James Louis Nixt was born Nov. 18, 1952, at Charles City, the son of Paul and Mary Lou (Scofield) Nixt. He graduated from Greene Community High School in 1971 and attended North Iowa Community College in Mason City. In 1977, he married Angela Nauman. They later divorced. James farmed for several years and then went into carpentry. He was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. James enjoyed hunting, playing practical jokes and spending time with his friends.

Living family members include a daughter, Anna (Brent) Clausen of Sheffield; a grandson, Gavin Clausen; three brothers, George (Susan) Nixt of Greene, Stephen (Geri) Nixt of St. Michael, Minn. and Michael (Ruth) Nixt of Greene; two sisters, Sharon (John) Daub of Mason City and Terry (Merv) Menken of Greene; many nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and great nephews.

Carol “Jean” Mayfield, 74, of Charles City, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at her residence.

Carol Dollman Mayfield was born Dec. 10, 1935, at Platte, S.D., the daughter of Roy and Blanche (Ferris) Dollman. She graduated in 1953 from Platte High School and then from LaJames Beauty School. On Sept. 27, 1954, she married Willis Sterk. They later divorced. Jean then married John Mayfield on May 30, 1981 at Charles City. Jean was proprietor of Jean’s Imperial Hair Fashions in Charles City for 42 years. She always enjoyed working with the public. Her interests included fishing, camping and gardening.

Living family members include her husband, John Mayfield of Charles City; five children, Brenda (Charles) Sterk Gray of Cedar Falls, Sharon (Scott Cook) Sterk Johnston of Charles City, Dwayne (Katrina) Sterk of Vidor, Texas, Margo (Tom) Mayfield Lind of Fort Pierce. MASON CITY – Gordon L. Kennison, 70, of 904 N. Van Buren, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at his Mason City home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at First Assembly of God, 1301 N. Carolina Ave., with Pastor Clyde Harvey officiating. Gordon was born May 23, 1939, in Mason City, the son of Claude and Margaret (Vigdahl) Kennison. His grade school education was completed at the Howardville school northeast of Floyd, and he graduated from Charles City High School in 1958. In his early working years he was employed at the Oliver Tractor Plant in Charles City, and also worked two years at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash. He spent most of his working years as an over-the-road truck driver, covering most of the U. S., with several years spent in regular runs to the east coast. Gordon retired from Curries Manufacturing Company in Mason City around 1998. Gordon toured much of the U.S. by motorcycle. These trips included places such as the Smokey Mountains and the length of the Rockies in the western U. S. When he was a small boy he developed an interest in Southern Gospel music. Throughout his life he attended many singing conventions in the country and was a regular at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Ky. Gordon loved people, was an excellent conversationalist, and had a genuine interest in the lives of anyone he was conversing with.

Gordon is survived by his son, Timothy Lee Kennison of Charles City; granddaughter, Saphire Lynn Kennison of Charles City; brothers, Philip (Mary Jean) Kennison of San Angelo, TX, Thomas (Barbara) Kennison of Orchard, and David Kennison of Erie, Colo.; sister, Kathryn (Bob) Barker of St. Louis, Mo.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Ruby Jaeger, 85, of Charles City, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Ruby Evelyn Jaeger was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Floyd County, the daughter of Harry and Clara Bell (Armstrong) Sonne. She graduated from the Colwell School and worked for several years at Woolworth’s in Charles City. On Dec. 9, 1945, she was united in marriage to Claire Jaeger. They farmed all their lives north of Charles City. Ruby was baptized at the Colwell United Church of Christ and attended Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Double Dozen Club. Her interests included embroidery, cooking, canning and flower gardening. She will be remembered for her spectacular potato salad. Ruby thoroughly enjoyed her family; especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and always looked forward to their dropping in for a visit.

Living family members include three children: Duane (Sandy) Jaeger, Linda Zubrod and Donna (Craig) Hippen, all of Charles City; six grandchildren: Troy (Dara) Jaeger, Michael (Tricia) Jaeger, Melissa (Tim) Piper, Chad (Melissa) Zubrod, Heather (Jeremy) Eichenberger and Haley Hippen; eight great grandchildren: Tate, Rhett and Roush Jaeger, Bailey Piper, Kynseth Zubrod, Noah, Aleah and Jennifer Eichenberger and another soon to arrive; and three sisters-in-law: Madelynn Sonne of Nashua, Norma Jaeger of Charles City and Edith Sonne of Nashua.

Herbert W. Schinnow, 92, of Charles City, died on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Herb donated his body to the Mayo Foundation.

A memorial service for Herbert Schinnow will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate.

The family will greet friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.

Herbert William Schinnow was born on Sept. 22, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Amil and Bertha (Rehwinkel) Schinnow. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. On Sept. 11, 1937, Herb married Bernadine Moore. During World War II, Herb, Bernadine and son Terry moved to Oregon for work in the shipyards. He also proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Bernadine passed away on April 15, 1975. On Sept. 25, 1978, he married Rosemary Osier. She passed away on Aug. 28, 2008. Herb worked at Oliver/White Farm Corporation for 31 years, retiring in 1977. He was a lifelong fisherman and he and Rosemary owned a home on the Mississippi River for many years. He enjoyed gardening and sharing what he grew. Herb loved his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

Herb is survived by his son, Gene Schinnow, of Joice; a daughter, Laura Schinnow (Ron Palumbo) of Ames; two step-sons, Mike Osier of Winter Garden, Fla., and Chris (LeeAnn) Osier of Chariton; 10 grandchildren: Tracy (Darla) Schinnow, Valorie Byngelson and her fiancé Verlan Jensen, Stephanie Schinnow, Robin Schinnow, Elizabeth Palumbo, Shannon (Chris) Nesbit, Stephanie Osier, Mike DeJean, Jordan Osier and Lauren Davis; four great-grandchildren: Alison Butterfield, Nicholas Schinnow, Nathan Bryngelson, Justin Schinnow; and a great great-grandson, James.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; his eldest son, Terry Schinnow; and two brothers, Emmett and Robert Schinnow.

Roger Vote, 64, of Charles City, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following complications from surgery.

Roger Lee Vote was born Jan. 3, 1945, at Fort Dodge, the son of Clarence and Evelyn (Erickson) Vote. He graduated from the Riceville High School in 1963. On Nov. 25, 1967, he was united in marriage to Mary Mans at Goodhue, Minn. He worked many years for Iowa Drainage Inc. of Sheffield. Roger became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1974 and shared his faith with others up to the day before his final hospitalization. He always looked forward to the times he could share his love and life with his family. Both he and Mary enjoyed entertaining at their home. Roger enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing and watching football.

Living family members include his wife, Mary of Charles City; five children: Michael (Beverly) Vote of Waterloo, Cindy (Demetrius) Robison of Rochester, Minn., Sherry (Adam) Madsen of Denver, Colo., Rebecca (Eric) Bolinski of Charles City and Laura (Corey) Thomas of Charles City; four grandchildren: Ethan and Zachariah Vote, Kiana Robison and Baruch Bolinski; a sister, Anna (John) Padget of Waterloo; and many other relatives and friends.

Georgie Arlene Hicok

WAVERLY — Georgie Arlene Hicok, 86, of Waverly, died peacefully at her home on Monday morning, Dec. 14, 2009, following complications of cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Ionia Congregational United Church of Christ in Ionia, with Pastor Laura Hucke officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua following lunch at the church. Public visitation will be held today from 4-8 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Georgie was born on Nov. 17, 1923, in Floyd County, the daughter of Harvey Lewis and Agnes (Jermier) Wilson. On April 6, 1947, Georgie was united in marriage to Gerald E. Hicok at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple began their married life on an 80-acre farm near Ionia and one year later, moved to a farm southwest of Charles City where they farmed for the next 13 years. In 1961, they moved to their farm three miles north of the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In the early 1980s they began to slow down and semi-retired. In 1984, the couple moved to their present acreage in Waverly and loved living their lives on the “Hill.” Gerald died on July 26, 2006, and Georgie continued to live in her home.

Georgie was a member of the Ionia Congregational United Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crafts, bird watching, baking and cooking, but most of all loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Georgie is survived by her five children and their spouses: Larry (Sharon) Hicok of Rockford, Geralynn (Raymond) Legel of Waverly, Gaylen (Gloria) Hicok of Charles City, Audrey (Dan) Lechtenberg of Nashua and Wayne (Carol) Hicok of Nashua; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Chambers of Charles City, Marie (Raymond) Chambers of Charles City and Rose Mary (Lynn) Edson of Ionia.

Georgie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald; and a brother, Harvey Eugene Wilson Jr.

Ellen Vivian Wilson, 94, of Riceville, passed away on Dec. 13, 2009, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Ellen was born in Wellsburg on Nov. 20, 1915, to Dr. Joseph Alfred and Imogene Vivian (Morgan) Uran. She attended local schools and upon graduation from high school attended the American Institute of Business where she received her degree. Ellen was united in marriage to Bill James Wilson on Dec. 20, 1946, at Hapeville, Ga. Ellen was an active member of the Riceville United Methodist Church in her younger years, a Girl Scout leader for many years in Riceville and loved scrap booking. She worked for the Riceville Community Rest Home as a bookkeeper until her retirement.

Survivors include her four daughters: Sharon Fleming and her husband Harold of Milan, Ill., and their daughter Misty and her husband Steve Thiltgen and their children, Mary, Sabra, Millicent and Sophia; Janice Wilson and her friend Mike Jacobs of Charles City, and her daughter, Lavinia “Lee” and her husband Allen Neiman and their children Levi and Reno; Rene and her husband Darwin Rieman of Rudd and their children Kaniz, Troy, Kamina and Ellen; and Jone and her husband Ray Jones of Dublin, Ga., and their children Kelley, Crystal, Katie and Carrie.

Robert H. Hovey, 92, of Hampton, passed away Dec.16, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City.

Hovey was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Cerro Gordo County, to John H. and Ella (Hunt) Hovey. Robert graduated from Sheffield High School in 1935. He was married to Marie Claypool in 1941. She later preceded him in death. He remarried Lois Chaplin Robinson on Dec. 28, 1958. Robert worked as a farmer throughout his life in the Sheffield area. He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church. Robert was formerly a member of the Franklin County Historical Society Board and the REA Power Plant Museum Board, the Hampton Lions Club and the Missouri Valley Wrench Collectors Club. Robert was a former Director of the Sheffield Coop Board and the Franklin REC Board of Directors. He also participated in the Heifer Project International.

Robert is survived by his wife Lois Hovey of Hampton; son Allen Hovey and wife Marjorie Lynn of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter Donna Andreessen of Waverly, daughter Eileen and husband Herman Merten of Charles City, son Wayne and wife Ann Robinson of Iowa City; daughter Margaret and husband Robert Koppen of Lansing, Kansas; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marie Hovey; sisters Eunice Symens, Laura Freie; and a son-in-law L. W. Andreessen.

MAXWELL — Shirley M. Erbe, 76, of Maxwell, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at her home, of complications from a stroke and brain tumor. Per Shirley’s wishes, she was cremated and no services will be held. Her cremated remains will be taken to New Mexico where her husband and daughter’s ashes were scattered before her.

She is survived by her daughter, Victoria McEachern of Boca Raton, Fla.; her sister, Vera Cerwinski of Nashua; her brothers, Willard (Marie) Hennick Jr. and Eldon Hennick, both of Charles City, and Ronald (Sandra) Hennick of Floyd; her granddaughters, Levette Bosley and Terre’ Stacy, both of Maxwell; and her beloved Troy and Little Guy.

Jurene L. Slindee

Jurene L. Slindee, 83 of Lyle, Minn., died Thursday morning, Dec. 17, 2009, at Good Samaritan Society of St. Ansgar.

She was born March 24, 1926 to Bernard and Pearl E. (Grovo) Stubberud in Otranto Township, Mitchell County. Jurene grew up and received her education in the Mona and Lyle, Minn., area. She married Algie Burnett Slindee on April 1, 1944 in Lyle, Minn. The couple owned and operated the Ortranto Garage from 1953 to 1955. They were members of Mona Lutheran Church and founding members of the Cedar Valley Engine Club. Jurene enjoyed dancing, playing her accordion and her animals. They farmed in the Lyle area and later moved to Charles City before returning to rural Lyle in 1968. Algie died on July 31, 1976. In 1982, Jurene married Conrad Peterson, who later died of cancer. Jurene entered the Good Samaritan Society of St. Ansgar on Oct. 18, 2006.

Survivors include her son, Algie (Kay) Slindee of rural Elma; her daughter, Terrie (Steven) Nitardy of Grand Rapids, Minn.; four grandchildren, Sonja (Mike) Cotton of Charles City, Brent (Terry) Slindee of Elma, Nadia Slindee of Iowa City and Ashley (Daniel) Shankle of Superior, Wis.; four great-grandchildren, Mija Cotton, Joslyn Cotton, Kaleb Cotton and Elijah Shankle; two step-great granddaughters, Shannon Loeckle and Leah Strouf; a daughter-in-law, Linda Slindee of Austin, Minn.; half brothers and sisters Bonnie (Donald) Franks of Rock Falls, Ill., Annette (Harvey) Henrix of Pekin, Ill., Steven (Marge) Stubberud of Waterloo and Carla (Patrick) Gionson of Eagle River, Ala.; sister-in-law, Mary Slinde of Rose Creek; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Algie and Conrad; son, Emanuel; brother, Emmanuel Stubberud; and two half brothers, Gene and Mervin Dale Stubberud.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20, at Mona Lutheran Church, Mona, with Pastor Lydia Mittag officiating. Interment was at First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Bernadine “Bernie” Baldwin, 85, of Charles City, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

 A funeral Mass for Bernie Baldwin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. followed by a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service. Visitation will continue an hour before the Mass at the Church on Tuesday.

Bernadine June Bonsall was born June 24, 1924, in Mitchell County, the daughter of Roy and Pearl (Clingman) Bonsall. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1943. On November 29, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harlan Baldwin at the Immaculate Conception Church. Bernie was employed at Oliver/White Farm for 29 years in the Payroll Department. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anthony’s Circle, Women of the Moose and the V.F.W. Her interests included playing cards, collecting teapots, baking, cooking meals for her family, especially potato salad, visiting with people and spending time with her family.

Living family members include her three children, Dennis (Sue) Baldwin of Davenport, Gregory Baldwin of Davenport and Janice (Randy) Gilbert of Floyd; nine granddaughters; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter-in-law, Linda Baldwin; two sisters, Wilma Varner and Viola Grant; a sister at infancy; and a brother, Quinton Bonsall.

Nora Wagener

Nora M. Wagener, 85, of Faribault, Minn., died on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be at First English Lutheran Church, Faribault, on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Richard L. Jorgensen officiating. Interment will be at the Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, Faribault.

Visitation will be at the Boldt Funeral Home on Tuesday, Dec. 22 from 3-7 p.m. and also at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service.

Nora Mae, daughter of Martha (Langeness) and Arthur Means, was born on May 9, 1924, in Los Angeles, Calif. After a move to Minnesota, she attended elementary school in both Kenyon and Rochester, Nora then moved to Minneapolis, where she graduated from Central High School. She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and completed a teaching degree, graduating cum laude in 1946. Following college, she taught for two years in Sleepy Eye, Minn.

Nora was united in marriage to Harold E. Wagener on July 17, 1948, at the Holden Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon. After their marriage, they resided in Preston and Nora taught in Miles, a short distance away. Harold and Nora returned to the family farm in Wheeling Township east of Faribault in 1950. Daughter Janice was born in 1952, followed by Diane in 1954. Nora devoted her time to raising her girls, helping Harold on the farm, and substitute teaching until 1963, when she accepted a teaching position at Bethlehem Academy in Faribault. She was an educator there until her retirement in 1976. She was active in the school theatre productions, the school proms and was an avid sports fan, cheering on her students at every opportunity. Nora’s greatest passions were her family, her vast circle of friends, her beloved students, travel and her love of writing.

Nora was an avid contributor to her community. She was an active member of First English Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council, was involved in the women’s circle group and was a frequent lector for Sunday services. She was a 4-H leader, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Faribault Kiwanis Club and a rural ladies’ extension group. She also volunteered for the Red Cross and the Clothes Closet.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice (Leon) Mulford of Charles City and Diane (Steve) Wagener of Albany, Ore.; two grandchildren, Sarah Mulford of Owatonna, Minn. and Daniel Mulford (Amy) of Des Moines; three step-grandchildren, Sarah and Jeremy Wagener of Portland, Ore., and Loren Wagener of San Diego, Calif.; a great-grandson Dylan James of Des Moines; a sister-in-law Marjorie (Wagener) and husband Paul Norgaard of Elk Grove, Calif., and sisters-in law Anita Wagener of Faribault, Minn., Betty Wagener of Albany, Ore., and Loretta Wagener of St. Cloud, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold, mother, Martha Sonnesyn, brothers-in-law Robert of Faribault, Harvey of St. Cloud, Minn. and Loren of Albany, Ore.

NEW HAMPTON — Elizabeth “Betty” Welton, 95, a long time resident of Charles City, died on Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.

Elizabeth C. Welton was born on June 26, 1914, to Paul and Lizzie (Schreiber) Martens at her parent’s home in Charles City. She attended Charles City High School, graduating in 1932. On June 20, 1939, Betty was united in marriage to Glenn R. Welton. To this union, three sons were born; Jon, Richard and Douglass. Jon lived for a short time from February 1944 to April 1945.

Betty and her husband enjoyed raising their sons and working in real estate together. Betty also owned and operated the Gift House for several years in the late 1960s. Glenn passed away on Aug. 8, 1984. Betty enjoyed playing cards and her family.

Betty is survived by her two sons Richard (Diane) Welton of Mora, Minn., and Douglass (Malinda) Welton of New Hampton; four grandchildren: Eric (Aoy) Welton of Pai, Thailand, Jennifer Welton of Ames, Meredith (Nathan) Voight of Cedar Rapids and Nate Welton of Rochester, Minn.; two great grandchildren, Jackson Voight of Cedar Rapids and Eve Welton of Pai, Thailand; and a nephew, Charles Martens of Sydney, Australia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glenn R. Welton in 1984; a infant son, Jon, in 1945; a grandson, James Welton; two brothers, George and Marvin Martens and their wives; a nephew, Donald Martens, and a niece, Karin Martens.

Norma Hutchison, 52, of Charles City, formerly of St. Smith, Ark., died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at her home.

Funeral services for Norma Hutchison will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Paul Phillips of the Gospel Lighthouse in Floyd will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Norma Jean Martin Hutchison was born March 25, 1957, at Charles City, the daughter of Dean and Elsie (Allen) Martin. She graduated from Charles City High School. In 1975 she was united in marriage to John Hutchison. They later divorced. Over the years, she worked at HyVee and Walmart in the Charles City and Ft. Smith area. Norma was a member of the Evangel Temple in Ft. Smith. One of the things Norma enjoyed most was driving, no matter where she was going. She looked forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Living family members include two children, Holly (Brian) Sachen of Charles City and James (Sharyl) Hutchison of Ft. Smith, Ark.; six grandchildren; her mother, Elsie Martin of Charles City; two brothers, William (Lynn) Martin of Memphis, Tenn., and Steven (Terry) Martin of Ft. Smith, Ark.; and a sister, Kathy Simpson of Lake Mills.

She was preceded in death by her father; and a daughter in infancy, Shelly Marie Hutichson.

OSAGE — Ernest Jeffries, 81, of Osage died Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at Faith Lutheran Home, Osage.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St., Osage. Officiating will be the Rev. Roy Ott. Earnest F. Jeffries was born on Jan. 22, 1928, in Mitchell County the son of Earl and Gustava “Johnson” Jeffries. His early education was in Osage. On April 15, 1946, he joined the Army and served at Guam and the Philippines during WWII and was honorable discharged as a Corporal on Oct. 15, 1947. He was united in marriage to Joan Faber on Sept. 29, 1954, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union was born three children. Since 1955 they lived in Charles City, moving in their later years to Tampa, Fla., and then coming full circle back to Osage five years ago. Earnie started his work career as a truck driver delivering eggs for Cedar Valley Produce and then became a heavy equipment operator for 25 years with Triad Construction in Charles City. The last 15 years of his career he operated equipment for the City of Charles City retiring about 1994. Through the years they were members of Our Saviour’s Lutheran and then St. John Evangelical Lutheran in Charles City and then when moving back to Osage again became members of Our Saviour’s. He enjoyed tending his vegetable garden, camping with his family in and around Charles City and spending time with his grandchildren. While in Tampa he became a Buccaneer football fan. They also were regular volunteers with the Salvation Army in Charles City. Earnie was known to look at a problem, think about it and then fix just about anything.

Those thankful in sharing in Ernest’s life include his wife of ff years, Joan; his three children: Connie and her husband Alvin Blackburn of Zion, Ill., Kathy and her husband David Logan of Round Rock, Texas, and Kevin and his wife Jamey Jeffries of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren: Jenny (Mike) Bateman, Marshal (Danielle) Blackburn, Stephanie (Nick) Valentin, Chris Logan, Patty and Sarah Jeffries; two great grandchildren, Evan and Alyssa Bateman; his sister, Nancy Nutt of Coralville; both brothers, Orland (Nancy) Jeffries of Iowa City and Francis (Muriel) Jeffries of Naples, Fla.; along with several nieces and nephews.

His parents, parents-in-law and two brother-in-laws preceded him in death.

OSAGE — John Allan French, 54, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage. Visitation is from 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a scripture wake service at 4:30 p.m.

John was born Jan. 25, 1955, in Osage, the son of James and Mary Helen (Gerhartz) French. John was employed by Sara Lee in New Hampton, and retired from there due to ill health.

John is survived by his mother, Mary Helen French of Osage; his sister, Cathy French of Osage; his brother, Gary French of Charles City; his brother-in-law, David Krietemeyer, and his nephew, John Krietemeyer of Evansville, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his father, James French; his brother, Robert French; and his sister, Diann Krietemeyer.

Mabel A. Johnson was born Dec. 23, 1916, in Greene, a daughter of Edward and Kate (Stinger) Johnson and died Monday, Dec. 21, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. She received her education in Grove City, Ohio until the age of fourteen and then graduated from Greene High School in 1935.

She worked at the dime store, the school, the department store and the café in Greene. She was united in marriage to Louis Litterer on Oct. 3, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed southeast of Greene with her husband for 54 years until they moved into town in December of 1992.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. Mabel enjoyed her flowers and vegetable gardening, writing poems, baking and playing the organ. After they moved to town she liked helping Louis and Phyllis deliver meals on wheels and going to dances.

Living family members include her seven children, four daughters: Wilma (Wayne) Schmitt of Forest Lake, Minn.., Loretta (Loren) Johnson of Springfield, Ill., Carol Herrmann of Oregan, Wis., and Phyllis Litterer of Eagle Grove; three sons: Charles (Maggie) Litterer of Mansfield, Texas, Donald (Judy) Litterer of Shell Rock and Merlin (Linda) Litterer of Greene; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; one sister-in-law and one brother-in-law.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one great-granddaughter, and two brothers, William and Clair Johnson.
