Miranda Redfield

 

 

Funeral Services for Miranda Redfield will be held on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville. Pastor Marlene Elmstrom will be officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2009, from 5-7 p.m. at Larson Funeral Home in Ortonville, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will be at the Clinton City Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be Miranda’s grandsons: Bruce Redfield, Russ Redfield, Loren Redfield, Chris Redfield, Daniel Hollar, Dennis Hollar and Douglas Hollar. Honorary pallbearers will be Miranda’s granddaughters: Tami Marr, Teri Wegner, Jodi Karsky, Audrea Buller and Kelsey Anderson, and also the Day of Love quilting ladies of First English Lutheran Church.
    Miranda died on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Northridge Residence in Ortonville, having lived to reach the age of 92 years.
    Miranda is survived by her two sons: Merwyn “Merv” and wife Jan of Alexandria Minn., and Dewayne “Punk” and wife Sharen of Graceville, Minn.; two daughters: Arlene “Sis” and husband Bill Hollar of Charles City and Patsy Redfield of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 15 great great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind, sisters: Dewona Amberg of Ortonville, Minn., Delyla Kraines of Minnetonka, Minn.; brothers-in-law: Edwin Redfield of Red Wing, Minn., and Hartzel Sorenson, of Redwood Falls, Minn.; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Mathison, Irene Mathison, Ragna Redfield, Marge Redfield and Pauline Redfield; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Richard Lazell (Van) VanDeventer

    Richard Lazell VanDeventer, 93, passed away peacefully Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
    According to his wishes for cremation, inurnment with military rites will be at the Jackson Memorial Cemetery at Montezuma, Iowa, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11.

    Frank Kerulis, 66, of Dubuque, formerly of Charles City, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at his home.
    A funeral Mass for Frank Kerulis will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

    A Funeral Mass for Edna Merfeld, 92, of 708 South Jefferson, Indianola, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 6, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Greene.
    Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., Sunday, April 5, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene, where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m., followed by a Rosary Service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Monday.
Edna Katherine Brunner was born Aug. 12, 1906, in rural Union Township, Floyd Co., a daughter of Jacob and Sadie (Vorhes) Brunner and died Monday, March 31, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Indianola.

Mildred Bilharz, 88, formerly of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

    Mildred was born on Sept. 27, 1920. She was united in marriage to Clair Bilharz and to this untion nine children were born. 
    Mildred was survived by her nine children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fren and Nettie Altenburg; her husband, Clair; and her grandson, Ronald Bilharz, Jr.

Frank Kerulis

    Frank Kerulis, 66, of Dubuque, formerly of Charles City, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at his home.

    Frank Andrew Kerulis was born April 24, 1942, at Hammond, Ind., the son of Francis “Frank” and Leona (Weber) Kerulis. He graduated from East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, Ill. and attended the University of Northern Iowa. On July 20, 1963, he was united in marriage to Nola Townsend at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Frank began his career at International Harvester in Melorse, Ill. and retired on Jan. 31, 2001, from John Deere at Dubuque. His memberships included the Iowa Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Frank’s interests included gold panning, camping, canoeing, hunting and studying history and genealogy. 
    Living family members include his wife, Nola of Dubuque; two daughters, Catherine (Sam) Theodore of San Diego, Calif., and Victoria “Vickie” (Robert) Knochenmus of Allen, Texas; and six, grandchildren: Katharine, Elizabeth, Grace, Matthew, Elijah and Faith.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Francis.

Edna K. Merfeld

    She received her education in the Marble Rock Public Schools and graduated from Greene High School in 1925. She was united in marriage to Henry W. Merfeld on August 11, 1925. They made their home in the Greene area where she was employed as a “Central” Operator for the Iowa State Telephone Company which in turn, merged and became part of the United Telephone Company of Greene. On Oct. 15, 1962, Greene went to a dial system thus eliminating the need for operators; Edna moved to New Virginia, Iowa where she continued her work. She returned to Greene on June 1, 1968. Edna moved to Osceola, in June 1999, where she lived for 4 and a half years before moving to the Good Samaritan Society in Indianola.
    Edna is survived by three daughters: Phyllis (Richard) Leavens of Charles City, Marcia (Fritz) Dickman of Clarksville, Helen Reed of New Virginia, Iowa; nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren.
    She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Merfeld, December 7, 1934, parents, and one brother: Edwin Brunner.

Mercedes “Cede” Keifer, 89, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Jacksonville, N.C.
    A funeral Mass for Cede Keifer will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.
    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 3-6 p.m. Sunday where a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 5 p.m.  Visitation will continue Monday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.
    Mercedes Genevieve Havey Keifer was born July 26, 1919, at Ernie, the daughter of John and Margaret (Bockelman) Havey.  She graduated from the Immaculate Conception School.  On May 31, 1947, she was united in marriage to Hillary Keifer at Kansas City, Kans.  Cede was a payroll clerk at the Oliver White Farm Equipment Corporation for over 28 years retiring in 1980.  She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Patrick Circle, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the Heritage Club.  Her interests included fishing, playing cards, quilting and traveling.
    Living family members include a son, Dennis (Denise) Keifer of Jacksonville, N.C.; two grandchildren, Edmund Keifer and Vondal Keifer; a great-granddaughter, Angelica Keifer; and a brother, Richard (Lura) Havey of Nora Springs.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Nov. 9, 1984; two brothers, Raymond and John Havey; and two sisters, Celeste Gabel and Marnie Schaefer.

Verlon ‘Chuck’ Weiss

    Verlon “Chuck” Weiss, 73, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Mountain Vista Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.
    Memorial services for Chuck Weiss will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity United Methodist Church.  Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate.  Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with Military Honors conducted by Tack-Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

    Paul E. Wolf was born May 23, 1921 in rural Waverly, Warren Township, Bremer Co., ,the son of Herman and Minnie (Quilling) Wolf and died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

    Imogene M. Abbott, 83, formerly of Rockford, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She was residing with her son at 14055 Lakeview, Clive, Iowa.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 East Main Ave. Rockford, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main Rockford and again one hour prior to services at the church. Clara Amsbaugh

    Clara Amsbaugh, 90, of Charles City, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
    Per Clara’s request there will be no funeral service.
    Clara Freerksen Amsbaugh was born April 20, 1918, at Kanawaha, the daughter of Freerk and Elizabeth (Gatena) Freerksen. After graduation she attended beauty school.
    Living family members include two children, Jean (Jerry) Nelson of Maskell, Nebr. and Jerry Peters of Floyd; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; four sisters; and a brother.

Nancy Francis Danger

    Nancy Francis Danger, 81, of Garner, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
    A funeral service for Nancy will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126-3rd Street NE, Mason City, with Reverend Keith Scott of Wesley and Grace United Methodist Church in Mason City officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 18 West, Mason City where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
    Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
    Nancy Francis Danger was born on April 29, 1927, in Sanders, KY, the daughter of Howard and Ruby (Bales) Scott. She attended and graduated from a high school in KY. Nancy was in inducted into the Women’s Army-Air Force in 1944, and served her country honorably until her discharge in 1945. Nancy graduated from La James College in Mason City, and owned and operated her own beauty shop in Mason City until her marriage. She was united in marriage to Robert L. Danger on Oct. 6, 1962, in Sioux Falls, S.D., and to this union a son was born.
    Nancy loved to play bridge, gardening, cooking, baking and ceramics, but her greatest love and enjoyment was her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Robert L. Danger, Sr, of Garner; a son, Robert Danger, Jr., and his wife Christina of Slater; three grandchildren: Gracie, Jack and Zane Danger, all of Slater; four sisters: Ruby (Lunis) Manuel and Mary (Kenneth) Seel of Madison, Ind., Eva (Kenneth) McKinley of Hanover, Ind., and Judy Zearing of Madison, Ind.; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bob and Martin; and four sisters; Eunice, Ginny, Dora, and Nell Rose.

Ronnie Lee Burks

    Ronnie Lee Burks, 42, of Rocheport, Mo., and  formerly of New Hampton, passed away in rural Pilot Grove, Mo., as the result of a one-car accident on Sunday, March 22, 2009. 
    There will be a local memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, with a luncheon following.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  
    Ronnie was born April 6, 1966, in Fayette, Mo., to James Lee Burks and Shirley Timmons Burks.  He graduated from Pilot Grove High School and later moved to Iowa, helping his dad in the railroad tie business and also working for Dick Brummond Construction. It was then that he met his mate of the next 21 years, Erin Milller.  Ronnie and Erin moved to Missouri, where Ronnie was employed by Luscombe Farms in Blackwater until the time of his death. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a animal lover.   
    Ronnie is survived by his mother, Shirley Gaffga of Shell Knob, Mo.; his grandmother, Wilma Via of Harrisburg, Mo.; a brother, James Ray Lockwood of Paris, Mo.; sisters: Shirla Day of New Franklin, Mo., Anna Jean Tiffany of Sturgeon, Mo., Tanya Behrle of Midway, Mo., Charlotte Smith of Berryville, Ark., Yvonne Burks  of Charles City, Jamie Lea Burks of Shawnee, Kan.; and stepmother Karol Burks of Charles City. 
    He was preceded in death by his father, James Lee Burks in 2003, and his grandfather, Romie Lee Burks, in 1999.

    Robert L. Lore, age 76 of Rural Ionia died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at his home.

Robert C. Turner

    Robert C. Turner, 95, of the Hiawatha Care Center and formerly Charles City, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Robert Castle Turner was born Sept. 12, 1913, at Greene, the son of John and Daisy (Ebersold) Turner.  He attended school in Greene.  On April 1, 1939, he was united in marriage to Josephine Nehls at Charles City.  After high school Robert was a painter for Oscar Immer and worked in the shipyards in Fla.  Robert also worked many years at Salsbury Laboratories until his retirement in January of 1976.  While helping his wife, Jo, raise their three young sons, he was involved in their Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs.  He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Methodist Men’s Brotherhood, Pythians, Senior Citizens Center, Heritage Club and Midi’s.  Robert was an avid fisherman, hunter and he also loved camping.  You might have heard him roaring up the Cedar in his airboat.  In later years he used his talents in wood working to make many wall hangings and crafts.  Both Robert and his wife were active in the church and in their 80’s delivering Meals on Wheels to the “Old Folks.”
    Living family members include his sons, Don (Janie) Turner of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Roger (Karen) Turner of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, David (Jewel) Turner of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Faith Turner of Jacksonville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2002; son, Bobby Joe Turner; sisters and their husbands: Ida May (Ray) Ashton, Jean (Bill) Christy and Thelma (Bill) Wenger; brothers and their wives, Charles “Duck” Turner and Russell (Wilma) Turner.

Verlon ‘Chuck’ Weiss

    Verlon “Chuck” Weiss, 73, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Mountain Vista Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.
    Memorial services for Chuck Weiss will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity United Methodist Church.  Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate.  Inurnment will take place at a later date.
    The family will greet friends at the church from 1 p.m. until service time.
Verlon Harold Weiss was born Sept. 26, 1935, at Charles City the son of Roy and Olive (Momberg) Weiss.  He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1953 and attended the University of Iowa.  In 1959, he was united in marriage to Shirley Meyers at Austin, Minn.  For 23 years he was employed as a firefighter and 45 years in the insurance business.  Chuck was veteran of the Army Airborne Paratroopers.   He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge where he was a trustee for eight years.  Chuck was Northeast Iowa’s first Conference Wrestling Champion and in 1998 he was inducted into River City’s Softball Hall of Fame.  His interests included golf, hunting, softball, dancing, chess, playing pool and cards.
    Living family members include his wife Shirley of Charles City; three children: Kelly (Ginny) Weiss of Gilbert, Ariz., Kari (Randy) Majors of Park City, Utah, and Kory (Trisha) Weiss of Charles City; eight grandchildren: Megan, Austin, Alex, Hannah, Jordyn, Luke, Callie and Nate; a brother, Darwin (Maureen) Weiss of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert LaVern (Bob) Lore

    Robert LaVern (Bob) Lore, age 76, passed away April 7, 2009, at home surrounded by family.
    Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m, Friday, April 10, at Ionia Funeral Chapel in Ionia, with Pastor James Mann officiating.  Burial will be in the Cedar View Cemetery, rural Ionia with Alan Steinlage, Dave Crandall, Steve Lowe, Ed Foxen, Jim Ashley, Roger Winter and Jim Link serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers are Fred Miller, Don Stuart, Dick Meyer and Jim Norton. Military Rites will be provided by Nashua VFW.
    Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, at the Ionia Funeral Home in Ionia, and will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

    Bob was born Nov. 29, 1932, in Charles City, son of Eugene and Lila (Harris).  In January 1955 he married Maida Boggess and to this marriage five children were born. The couple later divorced. In 1971, he united in marriage to Bonnie Bigelow.  Bob attended school in Ionia and Pearle Rock. He joined the Navy in December 1952; he was honorably discharged Nov. 7, 1956. He was decorated with good conduct, United Nations, Korean service and national Defense.  He was a life time member of the Nashua VFW.
    Bob loved trucking and visiting with many people, as he hauled across all the states for many years.  He worked for Allied Redi Mix in Charles City for many years.  Bob enjoyed moving snow, digging in the dirt and hauling dirt.  He also worked for Reicks Trucking in New Hampton.  He loved to play with his “Big Toys!”  Bob also loved to sit at the kitchen table having coffee and visiting with everyone that would stop by.  He was always voicing his opinion, joking and laughing.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Ionia; his children: Denise (Jerry) Conway of Austin, Texas, Jeff (special friend Kay) of Bellville, Texas, Bobby (Pam) of Bassett, Valerie (Mark) Tedder of Buda, Texas, David Lore of Austin, Texas, and Michelle (Jeromy) Winter of Ionia. He is also survived by his brother, Jim (H. James) of Charles City; and sister-in-laws: Phyllis Council of California, Doris Lore of Illinois and Mildred (Mickey) Lore of Nashua.  He has 16 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
    He is preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson John Anthony Fey of Austin, Texas; brothers Clayton and Marvin; and a sister, Lila Jean.

    Alvina Marie Ruzicka was born on October 26, 1911, in rural Marble Rock. She was the daughter of Frank and Catherine (Adams) Ruzicka. She was baptized on Oct. 29, 1911 according to the rite of the Roman Catholic Church. She grew up on the family farm, where she worked in the fields and learned to love all animals. She especially grew to love the family horses, Daisy and Molly. She was educated through the Archdiocese of Dubuque and was awarded her high school diploma on June 1, 1930. She had many great memories living on the family farm with her parents and siblings. She continued to live on the farm, with her brother, Tony until her health would no longer allow. In March 2003 she and her younger brother moved into Charles City. During August of 2007, she made one more move with her brother to Humboldt.  Here she was well taken care of in a nursing facility still living with her brother. On Holy Saturday, three weeks after her brother’s death, she passed away peacefully.  Alvina lived her life in complete contentment, finding joy in nature, peace in her faith, and love and happiness with her family.
    Alvina greatly believed in helping those who were less fortunate and unable to take care of themselves. Her generosity was extended to several Catholic missions and Educational endowments.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers, 5121 S.     Helen Catherine Bonfig was born on Aug. 25, 1912, to Joseph and Mary (Zeien) Hillsman in North Washington, Iowa. She attended school in North Washington and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma. Helen worked as a nanny in California until she was united in marriage to Evroul Bonfig on Jan. 5, 1939, in Los Angeles, Calif. She and Evroul operated Bonfig’s Tavern and Café at Ionia for 30 years. Helen also volunteered at the Charles City Hospital as a Pink Lady and at St. Boniface Bingo for many years.
    Helen enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She also greatly enjoyed her grand and great grandchildren coming to visit. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface Guild, and the Jolly 15 Ladies Club.
Helen is survived by her three sons: Dan (MaryAnn) Bonfig of Cottonwood, Ariz., Dick (Debbie) Bonfig and Dave (Karen) Bonfig, both of Ionia; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother Edward Hillsman of Waterloo; and a niece she helped raise, Wilma Schnurr of Mason City.
    She is preceded in death by her husband, Evroul; her parents; eight brothers: Irvin, Ray, Ralph, Frank, Art, Vincent, John and Joe at infancy; and four sisters: Ann Heit, Alice White, Louise Hillsman and Wilhemina Hillsman.

    Bernice I. Thompson, 94, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

    Bernice Irene Otto Thompson was born Dec. 14, 1914, at Rockford, the daughter of William and Clara (Gelhaus) Otto. In 1933, she graduated from the Rockford High School. After high school, she married Joe Klink. They later divorced. On June 13, 1964, she was united in marriage to Kermit Thompson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Bernice was employed for eight years at the Rockford Nursing Home. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, church circle, 60 plus, card club and Senior Center. Her interests included embroidery work, playing cards, flowers, traveling and taking care of the farm animals.
    Living family members include her five children: Patricia Walters of Elma, Leroy (Susan Terry) of Chicago, Gerald (Aurelia) Klink of Cedar Falls, JoAnn (Paul) Le Roux of Parma, Idaho and Jon (Judy) Klink of Klemme; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; three step-children, Janice (Robert) Westendorf of Mason City, Diane King of Florida and Robert (Donna) Thompson of Rockwell; and many nieces and nephews.

Henry G. ‘Hank’ Gorzynski

    Henry G. “Hank” Gorzynski, 85, of 703 6th St., died Monday, April 13, 2009, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.
    A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday April 18, at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 6th St., Rudd, with Reverend Jim Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Rudd Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd, with full military honors conducted by members of the American Legion H.D.S. Post 449.
    Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Henry G. Gorzynski was born April 14, 1923, in Chicago, the son of John and Mary (Filas) Gorzynski. He graduated from Lane Tech High School, the University of Northern Iowa, and received his master’s degree of industrial arts from Ball State. He was united in marriage to Audrey Stalker on Nov. 25, 1945; to this union two children were born.
    Hank worked for North American Aviation, Ronson Aeronautics Divison, Honeywell International in the Los Angeles area, as a design engineer and instructor.  Hank designed the Pneumatic Union Valve for the Apollo space flights. He enlisted into the United States Army on Sept. 2, 1942, and was honorably discharged on Jan.16, 1946.
    Hank enjoyed golfing, bowling, painting, photography, playing Bridge and was an avid sports fan. He was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and the Standards Engineering Association, where he served as the president for two years, and was a past Shriner member.
Hank is survived by his daughter Beryl A. DiAngelo of Carmichael, Calif.; her son, Thomas L. Gorzynski of Rudd; grandchildren: Dustin Boyd Gorzynski of Spokane, Wash., Dandy Noel Gorzynski of Los Angeles, Calif., Anthony Enrico DiAngelo of Prinevale, Ore., and Marissa Hebert, Houston, Texas; a sister, Cecilia (Arthur) Boruta, Niles Ill.; sisters-in-law Alvina Gordon of Chicago, Donna (Dom) Grasso of Olathe, Kan., and Veronica Stalker of Des Moines; a brother-in-law, Ed (Donna) Stalker of Minneapolis; along with several beloved nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
    He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Gorzynski; wife Audrey (Stalker) Gorzynski; grandson Chad A. Gorzynski; and a brother, Edward Gorzynski.

    Erma Amsden, 99, of Charles City, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Erma Irene Draheim Amsden was born Jan. 14, 1910, at Charles City, the daughter of Edward and Edna (Ellsworth) Draheim. She received her education at Charles City. Erma married Elmer Amsden at New Hampton. In 1946 they moved to Charles City where Elmer was employed at the Oliver Corporation. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Erma enjoyed playing cards, reading and going on sightseeing trips. The last 15 years Erma was a resident at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home where she will be remembered for her joking and teasing of the staff.
    Living family members include two sons, Robert (Lillian) Amsden of Elk Horn, Wis. and Elmer (Sandy) Amsden of McMinnville, Ore.; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bonnie Meighan and Marilyn Hoppe both of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 3, 1978; two sons, Duane and Jimmie Amsden; two daughters, Janet Walker and Jeanne DesForges; two grandsons, Roy and Randy Walker; a sister, Dorothy Toepfer; and a brother, John Draheim.

Bernd ‘Bernie’ Richter

    Bernd “Bernie” Richter, 68, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
    Private services are being planned by the family.
    Bernd Walter Horst Richter was born April 12, 1941, in Dresden, Germany, the son of Horst and Ingeborg (Schlotzig) Richter.  He received his education in Germany.  On May 8, 1968, Bernie came from Germany to work at Hydrotile in Nashua and continued there until 1982.  Bernie married Mary Lou Boge on October 26, 1969, at Kirksville, Mo.  In 1982, they moved to Colorado  where Bernie worked at Carter Concrete until January of 1989.  Returning to Charles City they continued operating the Saxony clothing stores in Charles City, Mason City and Cedar Falls.  Bernie’s interests included playing cards, trains, nature photography, traveling, enjoying the Richter Prairie, and family barbeques.
    Living family members include his wife, Mary Lou Richter of Ionia; a daughter, Lisa Richter of Cedar Falls; his mother, Ingeborg Ferkinghoff of Germany; a sister, Heide “Ellen” Lunkenheimer of Germany; two brothers, Werner (Gabi) Richter and Lothar (Lilo) Richter both of Germany; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his father; step father, Horst Pfeiffer; a brother, Udo Richter; and a beloved grandmother, Margarethe Schlotzig.

Bernd ‘Bernie’ Richter

    Bernd “Bernie” Richter, 68, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
    The family will receive friends from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at the Richter home, 1061 210th St., rural Ionia.

Ursula Agatha Callahan

    Ursula Agatha Callahan, 95, of Austin, Minn., died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.
    Ursula was born Aug. 4, 1913 in Currie, Minn. to Fred and Mathilda (LaValley) DeMarce.  She was united in marriage to John Harold Callahan.  He preceded her in death on May 9, 1971.
    Ursula was a homemaker.  She was instrumental in starting Austin's Hot Meals on Wheels program.  Ursula worked with the St. Olaf Auxiliary logging over 12,000 hours of volunteer service, retiring at the age of 92.
    Survivors include five children, Brian (Dorothy) Callahan of Prior Lake, Minn., Chris (Eileen) Callahan of Mantorville, Minn., Kevin Callahan of Rochester, Minn., Sheila (Steve) Dressen of New Prague, Kathleen (Tim) Eppley of Charles City; 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
    In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary; two great granddaughters, Sophie and Isabelle Ross; five brothers and three sisters.
    A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin, Minn.  There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.  Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
    The casket bearers will be Shannon Callahan-Villar, Matthew Dressen, Teresa Eppley, Timothy Callahan, Mike Thompson and Caitlin Callahan.
    The family prefers memorials to the Austin Medical Center Auxillary.

 

Phyllis A. Townsend

    Phyllis A. Townsend, 68, of Charles City, died Saturday afternoon, April 25, 2009, surrounded by her family, at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services for Phyllis Townsend will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City.  Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate.  Inurnment will be at a later date.
    Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.  Visitation will continue an hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
    Phyllis Ann Griswold Townsend was born May 30, 1940, at St. Ansgar, the daughter, of Ferris and Mary (Pappas) Griswold.  She attended school in Osage.  On Aug. 18, 1957, she was united in marriage to Robert Townsend at the Methodist Church in Osage.  Phyllis was employed at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City for 24 years.  She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Faith Circle and Women of the Moose.  Her interests included baking cookies, talking on the phone and spending time with her grandchildren.  Phyllis will be remembered for always helping others and her devotion to the church.
    Living family members include her husband, Robert Townsend of Charles City; six children, Sherry (Randy) Miller of Ionia; Douglas (Mary) Townsend of Greer S.C., Nancy (Larry) Pint of Manchester, Scott (Julie) Townsend of Charles City, Gregory (Angela) Townsend of North Mankato, Minn. and Tammy (Jim) Springer of Charles City; 17 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Alice (Terry) Morthland of Galva, Ill. and Linda Vorce of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Dennis Townsend.

Donald J. Picken

   Donald J. Picken, 92, of Mason City, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Good Shepherd Health Center. 
    Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating.  Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church one hour prior to services. 
    Memorials may be directed to the Don Picken Memorial Fund.  Don was born Jan. 15, 1917 in Floyd, the son of William and Carrie (Wade) Picken.  A graduate of Floyd Consolidated High School, he enlisted in the US Army on Oct. 8, 1941.  Don was lead navigator on a B17 attaining the rank of 1st lieutenant.  He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for “extraordinary achievement in aerial flight.” In addition, he received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on April 6, 1944.  Don returned home to marry Marcella Holstad on May 13, 1945 at Elk Creek Lutheran Church in Kensett.  Don later received his honorable discharge in St. Louis, Missouri.  He worked as a carpenter for Iowa Builder’s.  In 1959, Don started working for Curries Mfg. Company and would continue his employment there until he retired in 1982.  Following retirement, he enjoyed woodworking projects for his family, friends, and church.  Don enjoyed, hunting, fishing, trapping, golfing and his geraniums.   
Don is survived by his children, Arlyn (Connie) Picken of Winona, Minn., Sandra (Richard) Calhoun of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Dave (Chris) Picken of Reunion, Colo.; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Sandra) Picken of Floyd.
    Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marcella; one brother, Kenneth and two sisters, Inez Blunt and Clarice Goddard.

Helen M. Stiles

    Helen M. Stiles, 89, of Charles City, died Friday evening, April 24, 2009, at the Iowa Odd Fellows & Orphans Home in Mason City.
    Funeral services for Helen Stiles will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City.  Pastor Jim Stiles of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City will officiate.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

    Helen Mary Erickson Stiles was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Algona, the daughter of Peter and Johanna (Massdam) Erickson.  In 1938, she graduated from the Algona High School.  On Oct. 5, 1941, she was united in marriage to Charles Stiles in Charles City.  Helen taught country school for two years near Algona and later was employed at Montgomery Ward Catalog Office in Charles City.  From 1954 to 1970, Helen and Charles owned and operated Stiles Grocery on the corner of 9th and E Street in Charles City.  She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Church Circle, L St. Coffee Club and Sewing Circle.  Her interests included being an avid Comettes Softball fan, cross stitching, PLAYING CARDS, and making quilts to share with others.
    Living family members include her children, Jim (Jeanette) Stiles of Mason City, Jane (Harvey) Johnson of Mason City, John (Roberta) Stiles of Lewiston, Minn. and Jean (Randy) Christensen of Mason City; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Johanna Baker of St. Louis, Mo.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles on July 21, 2005; three sisters; and three brothers.

Stacey Bryant

    Stacey Bryant, 45, of Charles City, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.  A private family service followed by cremation is planned.  Stories, thoughts and condolences may be shared with the family on the funeral home website at www.Fullertonfh.com.
    Stacey was born on Sept. 20, 1963 in Washington D.C., the daughter of Eric William and Linda (Voorhies) Youmans.  She graduated from Maconaquah High School in Bunker Hill, Ind. and then graduated top in her class from Stenotype Institute of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. Stacey had worked for 23 years at the Child Support Recovery Department of the DHS.  She was united in marriage to Terry Bryant at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, where Stacey was also a member.  They had been married for almost 18 years.
    Stacey loved to collect various objects, including seashells, ladybugs and snow babies.  She also enjoyed the outdoors, soaking up the sun and thinking about palm trees, usually with a margarita in her hand.  Stacey took pride in everything she did, from her dedication to her job to making sure her vehicle was spotless.  Most of all, she loved the company of her friends, family and her wiener dog, Max.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Terry; sons, Taylor Dean and Hunter William Bryant; mother, Linda Houston; and siblings, Rick, Jeff, Tracy and Jackie.
    She was preceded in death by her father; father-in-law, Dennis Underwood; nephew, Keelan McIntire; and cousin, Lamonz Simpson.
