Anna Mae Marvin

Anna Mae Marvin, 78, of Charles City, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
Funeral services for Anna Mae Marvin will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.
Anna Mae Milhan Marvin was born July 30, 1930, in Howard County, the daughter of Arthur and Agnes (Bunston) Milhan. She received her education at Riceville. On April 20, 1951, she was united in marriage to Keith Marvin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Anna Mae worked for a time at the eggplant in Osage and Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home. She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, U.A.W. Auxiliary and the WIBC Bowling League. Her interests included dancing, bowling and playing 500. Anna Mae was a dedicated homemaker that always took an interest in what her family was involved in and looked forward to sharing the events of life with them.
Living family members include her husband, Keith Marvin of Charles City; eight children, Donald Marvin of Kansas City, Mo., Richard Marvin of Mason City, Jerry Marvin of Charles City, Francis (Cindy) Marvin of Britt, Rodney (Jessica) Marvin of Clear Lake, Debra Jo Marvin of Stacyville, Kelvin (Jennifer) Marvin and Kevin (Sonja) Marvin both of Charles City; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three sisters, Leona Arndt of Charles City, Esther (Marvin) Shoger of Riceville and Mary Lou Carnile of Edgewood; and a brother, Ralph (Martha) Milhan of Davenport.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Lee Marvin; and a brother, Harold Milhan.

Benjamin B. Sacueza, 64, of Charles City, died Thursday morning, July 2, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
A funeral Mass for Benjamin Sacueza will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Philippines.
The family will greet friends at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Benjamin Barbicena Sacueza was born Nov. 9, 1944, in the Philippines, the son of Thomas and Carmen (Barbicena) Sacueza. For the last 10 years Benjamin has lived in Charles City and was very proud to be living in the United States. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. His interests included fishing, farming and spending time with his family.
Living family members include his five children, Wilma Llagas of United Arab Emirate, KSA, Stele (Bernard) Regonie of the Philippines, Ofilia (Roberto) Digay of the Philippines, Mardonio (Bing) Sacueza of the Philippines and Paulo (Jessica) Sacueza of Charles City; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister; one brother; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Oscar Sacueza.

Dora Fern Ralph

NASHUA — Dora Fern Ralph, age 92 of Charles City, formerly of Nashua, died Friday, July 3, 2009, in Charles City.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with private family burial held at a later date.

Dora Fern Ralph was born Oct. 26, 1916, in West Frankfort, Ill., the daughter of John and Sula (Hicks) Parker. She received her education in Thompsonville, Ill, and graduated from the Senn High School in Chicago. On Jan. 16, 1933, she married Jesse Flowers. To this union three children were born. Mr. Flowers died in 1963 and on May 16, 1964, she married Jesse W. Ralph, who died in 1972.
Mrs. Ralph had done childcare, was employed at the National Press Printing company in North Chicago and worked 28 years as a sales associate for the Globe Department Store chain in Illinois. Memberships include the Golden Antlers of the Moose Club, the VFW Auxiliary, the Democratic Party and the United Methodist Church in Nashua. She enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking, gardening and playing cards. Dora will be remembered by her family as a devoted mother and grandmother who had a deep and abiding faith in God.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Meeker and Judith O’Brien, both of Charles City; two granddaughters, Robin Majewski of Charles City and Rachelle (Lucius) Lacy of Billings, Mont.; eight great-grandchildren; a step-son, Kenneth Ralph of Utah; and a step-daughter, Joan Storlie of Deer Park, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a son, James Howard Flowers; a brother, Edward M. Parker; and two granddaughters, Debra Benevides and Donna Rivera.



LeEtta Parker Shippey

July 07, 2009
LeEtta Parker Shippey was born in New Hampton, Iowa on Sept. 12, 1929 and died in Scottsdale, Ariz. on June 15, 2009. She was preceded in death by her son Raymond Lee. She is survived by her brother, Raymond Parker of Onalaska, Wis.; her son, Eugene “Gene” Jr. and wife Dauri of Princeton, N.J., and their three sons, E. Alexander, Adam and Matthew. Lee moved from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Scottsdale in 1961. She will always be remembered for her unconditional love, positive, can-do attitude and her generous nature.
A memorial service, followed by a celebration of her life, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 at Scottsdale United Methodist Church, 4140 N Miller Road, Scottsdale, AZ. In lieu of flowers please direct donations in her memory to the American Cancer Society.

Elizabeth “Betty” Starr, 82, of Charles City, died Friday morning, July 3, 2009, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Elizabeth Mae Chambers Starr was born June 23, 1927, in Howard County, the daughter of Raymond and Sarah (Weston) Chambers. In 1946, she graduated from the McIntire High School. On March 6, 1949, she was united in marriage to Buster Starr in Charles City. Betty was a country school teacher for two years and later was a janitor at the City Hall where she helped Buster. In her younger years, Betty was active in the Girl Scouts as a leader and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Her interests included sewing, baking, stamp collecting and gardening. She took special interest in Zoya her daughter’s pet cat and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Living family members include her two daughters, Debra (Mark) Bonzer of Charles City and Carnette Starr of Charles City; two grandchildren Zach and Megan Bonzer of Charles City; two brothers, Raymond (Marie) Chambers of Charles City and Freeman (Della) Chambers of Longmont, Colo.; sister, Virginia (Hurvey) Tudor of Colwell; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three brothers, James, Forest and Ned Chambers.

Linda Claire Howes Hull was born July 17, 1940, at Iowa City, the daughter of Dallas and Ethel (Peterman) Howes.
She attended school in Bedford and later received her GED. On June 17, 1966, she was united in marriage to Clayton Hull at the First Christian Church in Charles City. Over the years she worked at Ray’s Pizza and was a housekeeper. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Her interests included flowers, antiques, reading and singing.
Living family members include her husband, Clayton Hull of Charles City; two step children, Robert (Christine) Hull of Dallas, Texas and Laurie Easley of Grapevine, Texas; three step grandchildren; five sisters, Naomi Moore of Cedar Rapids, Marilyn Bradley of Mason City, Lois Young of Holstein, Ruth (Orville) Marsh of Stanton and Jean Marsh of Texas; two brothers, David (Sharon) Howes of Red Oak and Richard (Rosela) Howes of Greenfield; and many nieces and nephews.

Roger Allen Heffron was born Aug. 20, 1941, at Osage, the son of Milton and Violet “Shapley” Heffron. He graduated from the Charles City High School. On Feb. 25, 1962, he was united in marriage to Judith Strauser at Nashua. Roger was employed at Salsbury for over 30 years as a chemical reactor operator. His interests included farmalls, antique tractors, target shooting, gardening and spending time with his family.

Living family members include his wife, Judy Heffron of Charles City; two children, Mike (Tammy) Heffron of Charles City and Erin (Scott) Bockoven of Rudd; four grandchildren, Cara Heffron, Matt Heffron, Alexis Latch and Allison Pommrehn; three step-grandchildren, Trey Jacobs, Cory Jacobs and Julien Smith; two step-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Mary Goswick and Marie DeBoest.

Marvin Matthews, 81, of Charles City, passed away Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

 A funeral service will be held Friday, July 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main Street in Charles City with Rev. David Werges and Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 16 from 5-8 p.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., in Charles City and again one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Marvin was born in Charles City on Feb. 14, 1928, the son of Roy and Reka (Luecht) Matthews. When he was young, his family moved to Riceville, where Marvin attended school, graduating in 1946. He moved back to Charles City where he was a machinist for Oliver/White Farm. He retired from there after 33 years of service. Marvin was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Troutner on Dec. 5, 1953 in Nashua.

Marvin was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish and he participated in many DNR and Conservation programs. He also enjoyed volunteering with several children’s outdoor programs.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Gwen; sons Douglas (fiancé, Beth) and James (Lynda) Matthews; brothers Roy (Janice) and Gene (Helen) Matthews; sisters Carole (Harley) Lines, Delores (Fred) Winning and Linda (Dave) Platz; two aunts; an uncle; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons; and his sister, Ruth Deets.

Eleanor H. Clark

Eleanor H. Clark, formerly of Charles City, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on July 12, 2009.

Graveside memorial and interment services for the immediate family will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Albert Lea, Minn.

Eleanor had been a long time resident of Charles City and retired to Faribault, Minn. She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Derald) Caruthers; two granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

She was precedied in death as a child by her mother, Lydia, and later by her father, Clayton, and step-mother, Clara. Within this past six weeks she also lost her only sibling, Betty.

Genevieve was born on Feb. 17, 1927 in Cresco, the daughter of Eugene R. and Inga Gurina (Queel) DeWalle. Her family moved to Charles City in 1936 where she made her home ever since. She was united in marriage to John Jr. Herron on Aug. 25, 1946. Genevieve was a housewife and a mother, and was also involved in the Foster Grandparent Program and was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, John E. (Karol) Herron of Charles City and their son, Anthony; Steven Herron of Charles City and his children, Stephanie and Kevin, and Jennifer (David) Seckar of Floyd and their daughters, Kristin, Wendy and Amanda; sister, Celaine Gerleman of Charles City; brother, Eugene DeWalle of Green Bay; and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1981; and two grandchildren.

Roy was born on Oct. 2, 1918 in Garner, the son of Rikus and Sara (VanHoosen) Park. He graduated from Ventura High School as valedictorian in 1936. Roy was united in marriage to Loretta Krapp on Nov. 13, 1943 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. He farmed all of his life in North Iowa and lived at his current farm since 1952. He retired in 1988. 

Roy took pride in the cattle and sheep he raised, as well as his farm’s appearance. He volunteered as a 4-H leader and was a dealer for Crow’s Seed Corn. Roy enjoyed walking through the pastures, bird watching, reading westerns, watching sports (especially baseball) and crossword puzzles. Most of all, he loved his family and always took an interest in the activities of his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lettie, and brothers Don and Vernon. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Loretta; children, Terry (Cheryl) Park of Slidell, LA, Steve Park of Phuket, Thailand, Loralyn (Randy) Bertelsen of Mason City, Randy (Barbara) Park of Clear Lake, Linda (Jim) Jenson of Rockwell, Lanette (Eldon) Trebil of Plymouth and David (Roma) Park of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Wendy Wood, Terry Park Jr., Carmel Park, Michael Park, Anne Marie Moody and Angele Park, Brad, Brenda and Brittany Park, Chris Jenson and Miranda Wehr, Mathew and Marcus Trebil, and Shauna and Taryn Park; and great grandchildren, Briana, Kane, and Kei Shawn.

Memorial services for Al Roberts will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church in Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends Friday at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.

Mr. Roberts was born Oct. 17, 1912 in Spokane, Wash., to The Rev. Dr. D. Kendrick & Emma Evans Roberts. He graduated from high school in Racine, Wis., and in 1935 received a B.A. in economics from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. On Dec. 27, 1941, he was united in marriage to Irene Muecke in Sioux Falls, S.D. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Mr. Roberts was employed by J.I. Case Company for 15 years as a sales representative in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, South Dakota and Northeast Iowa.     

In 1953 he and his family moved to Charles City, where he purchased a Ben Franklin store. In 1958, he and Irene bought an existing ladies specialty shop, which became Roberts Clothes of Charm operating five locations including Charles City, Mason City, Austin, Minn., Rochester, Minn., and Sioux Falls, S.D.

He enjoyed his relationship with First Citizens National Bank Mason City, serving as a bank director for many years. He was on the board of the Charles City Cedar Valley Hospital and served as president of the Charles City Chamber of Commerce in 1959. He was a member of the United States Chamber of Commerce from 1960-1965, serving on the distribution and retail committee. Al was an advocate for Charles City. After the tornado demolished the downtown in 1968, he was the third merchant to sign a lease in the mall. When the Chevrolet dealership closed, he was instrumental in purchasing it and re-opening it. He was a co-owner of The Framing Connection. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and a life-long member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the First Congregational Church in Charles City where he served on the Board of Trustees and taught Sunday school. He loved a beautiful yard, azaleas and buying cars and bragged about his great-granddaughters.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife Irene, daughter Susan Stilwell of Sioux Falls, S.D, and son David K. (Janet) Roberts of Mason City; five grandchildren: Peter (Erika) Stilwell, Dallas, Texas, Amy (Jade) Benson, Kansas City, Mo., Elizabeth (Christopher) Seab, Billings, Mont., Annette (Don) Dawson, Indianola and David Roberts of New York, N.Y. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Piper and Sloane Stilwell, Sara and Megan Benson and Don and Annie Dawson; his sister, Evalyn Vandervelde of Seattle, Wash.; and sisters-in-law Dorothy Roberts of San Marino, Calif. and Edie Muecke of Sioux Falls, S.D. Many nieces and nephews also survive him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother The Rev. Dr. Edwin Roberts.

Memorials my be directed to the First Congregational Church in Charles City, the Salvation Army in Mason City or the Food Bank in Charles City or Mason City.

James Mooberry

James Clinton Mooberry passed away Sunday, July 12, 2009, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center. James was born on Feb. 9, 1969, at Sanford, Fla.

James is survived by one son, Jarid Mooberry of Baton Rogue, La.; his mother, Carolyn Mooberry of Leesburg, Fla.; two sisters, Jodi (Mark) Allen of Sulphur, La. and Janet (Kurt) Popp of Osage; and five nieces and nephews: Kyle, Jordan and Hailey Popp of Osage and Ryan and Shelby Blanchette of Sulphur, La.

James was preceded in death by his father,  Gerald Mooberry.

A family memorial service will be held at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City on July 31. God rest his soul.

Marjorie McMullen

ROCKFORD — Marjorie McMullen passed away May 10, 2009, in Daytona Beach, Fla., where she enjoyed the last four years of her life living with her son Leonard Jr.

She was born July 16, 1924, in Charles City to Michael and Margaret Peters. She attended Immaculate Conception Church and School where she graduated. She married Leonard McMullen of Rockford on May 8, 1944. They were married in the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

In 1950 they moved to Mahtomedi, Minn. Leonard passed away in 1980, but she remained a resident for 55 years and was the last of the old timers to leave Grove St. She saw many changes over the years and loved living near the lake. She had many friends and loved to talk on the phone. She enjoyed reading magazines on those cold Minnesota days.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Pagles, Frances Holland, Katy Fuller and her twin sister Margaret Schnurrer, and one brother Thomas Peters.

Survivors are daughter Patricia Cassedy and her husband Eugene of Corsicana, Texas; son Leonard B. McMullen Jr. of Daytona Beach, Fla.; one grandson, Shawn Cassedy og Plano, Texas; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 8, at the Rockford Cemetery in Rockford.



Cornellia M. Siewertsen

NORA SPRINGS — Cornellia M. Siewertsen, 90, of 907 West Congress St., Nora Springs, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A Funeral service was held Monday, July 27, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, with Reverend Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial was at the Rock Falls Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or Mended Hearts in memory of Cornellia, or sent to Olene Schroeder, 401 South 2nd Street, Greene, IA 50636.

Cornellia was born July 28, 1918, in Swea City, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Schluttner) Lang. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School. On March 1, 1938, Cornellia married Erwin Siewertsen in Albert Lea, Minn., and to this union eight children were born. Cornellia was a homemaker and farmwife, taking care of her children and helping her husband run the farm in Floyd. She was very active with all of the day to day operations on the farm.

In her spare time Cornellia liked to crochet, garden and play cards. She especially enjoyed the trips she went on with the Nora Springs Care Center. Most of all Cornellia loved her family, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, where she participated in many of their activities, the L.U.G.A., and the Senior Citizens Center of Rock Falls.

She is survived by her children: Venita Roy of Apple Valley, Minn., Idona Sue (Jack) Patton of Cedar Rapids, Martha Torres of Waseca, Minn., Maynard (Debra) Siewertsen of Fredricksburg and Olene (Allen) Schroeder of Greene; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; and her sister, Veronica Sutton of Mason City.

Cornellia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Erwin; her daughters Dvona Siewertsen and Rosa Beth Bass; a daughter in infancy, Joann Siewertsen; her grandson, Darren Roy; six brothers, five sisters and many other relatives.

David ‘Davido’ Carl Becker

David “Davido” Carl Becker, age 52, of rural Ionia, died Saturday, July 25, 2009, in rural Ionia.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the United Methodist Church, Nashua, with Pastor Penny Knudsen officiating. Private family inurnment will occur at a later date.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

David Carl Becker was born March 24, 1957, in Charles City, the eldest son of Ronald and Leah (Dann) Becker. He received his education in Nashua and later graduated from North Scott High School in Eldridge, in 1975. David worked for many years as a truck driver and then managed Raleigh Hill Golf Course in rural Ionia since 2003. He loved golfing, fishing, cooking, playing cards and shooting pool and the Cleveland Browns. He especially loved time with family and friends and was famous for his Davido pizza and ribs. He will be remembered by his family for his heart of gold, his smile and his hugs.

Survivors include one daughter, Jessica Becker of LeClaire; beloved partner Kathy Vohsman of Waverly; his father, Ronald Becker of Nashua; three sisters, Rhonda (Ted) Brockhouse of Davenport, Terri (Mark) Johnston of Nashua and Tamara (Kenneth) Pilling of Colorado Springs, Col.; two brothers, Rodger (Zina) Becker of DeWitt and Charles (Jonnie) Becker of Nashua; as well as many nieces nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1997; two brothers, Bradley and Donald Becker in 1974; and his grandparents.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, July 30, from 5-7 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE in Mason City. A Rosary and Scripture Service will also be held at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
