Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Donald W. Hull Memorial Fund.

Thoughts, condolences and stories may be e-mailed to the family on the www.fullertonfh.com website.

Donald Wayne Hull was born May 21, 1931 in Charles City to John Leonard and Delia Belle (Cook) Hull. He was one of nine children born to his parents. Don attended and graduated from Rockford High School among the class of 1949.

Don was inducted into the United States Army on February 19, 1952 in Des Moines and served his country during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Sergeant. After honorably and faithfully serving his designated time in the service, Don was formally discharged from his military duties on January 26, 1954 from Ft. Sheridan, Ill.

"Zip," as he was fondly known by his family and friends, met his future wife, Jean D. Powers while attending a dance at the Castle Club in Charles City. They married in Lyle, Minn. on December 10, 1955. Zip and Darlene continued their love of dancing, especially fond of ballroom and country-western music. Throughout the years, the couple treasured beginning each new day drinking coffee together, discussing the upcoming day's events and watching the birds and squirrels feed. Mornings were their special time!

Zip took great pride in providing for his family. He was employed as truck driver for Brick and Tile for 17 years and later trucked for Allied Redi Mix in Charles City, retiring in 1997 after 20 years with the company.

Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockford, the Moose Lodge and V.F.W. in Charles City, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever of Floyd County and various bowling leagues. He was former president of the Brick and Tile Union and a former den father for the Webelos Boy Scouts. Don will also be well-remembered by many as the outstanding Floyd County Senior Citizen Award recipient in 1994 and an avid baseball and softball fan and umpire. Don was the last remaining charter member of the Shellrock Valley baseball league formed in 1955. While in this league, he served as secretary-treasurer for 16 years and president for 20 years. Don actively umpired baseball and softball games for 35 years on numerous fields in northern and central Iowa.

Zip was a true "people person" in every sense of the word as he was known for his smile, sense of humor and his love of hearing a good story, as well as telling one or two. His zest for life was evident as he enjoyed socializing, often named "Rolodex" because he seemed to know everyone, loved life to the fullest, cheered for the Green Bay Packers, liked the challenge of a good game of cards and tending to his vegetable garden.

Don's greatest love and priority was that of his family and spending quality time with his grandchildren. They will truly miss the trips to McDonalds on Sunday mornings with Grandpa, his practical jokes and having Grandpa in attendance at their activities!

Jeff and his sons fondly recall fishing with Don along the Shellrock and Winnebago Rivers, Crystal Lake and Indian Lake. It was a special bonding for the three generations! Watching sports and discussions of sporting events in the media is a treasured memory that his son, Brad will forever cherish.

Don will be dearly missed by family and friends who have shared in his life.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Jean Hull of Rockford; his two sons, Bradley (Teresa) Hull of Des Moines and Jeffrey (Susie) Hull of Woden; his brother, Robert (Bea) Hull of Jefferson City, Mo., and his seven grandchildren, Randi (Chancy) Chipman and Sheric, Skyler, Ryan, Alex, Alyssa and Derek Hull.
