Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Joyce L. "Hammie" Hamm Memorial Fund.

Thoughts, condolences and stories may be e-mailed to the family on the www.fullertonfh.com Web site.

Joyce Leatrice Hamm was born April 6, 1926 rural Mower County near Austin, Minn., to August H. and Eudora E. (Condo) Husemoller. She was one of two children born to her parents and attended and graduated from Austin High School, among the class of 1944. She lovingly acquired the nickname "Hammie."

On August 15, 1948 in Austin, Minn., Joyce was united in marriage to Rex Hamm and the couple moved to Charles City, where Hammie has since resided. They became the parents of a daughter, Judith and a son, Kenneth.

In her adult life, Hammie was employed at Sherman Nursery, Montgomery Wards, City Motor Parts and Dorfman Auto Parts, where she retired from in 1980.

Hammie will be well-remembered by many in the community working at the Comet Bowl, where she was employed part time for the past 32 years. She was a life member and officer of the Charles City Women’s Bowling Association, a charter member of the Charles City Bowling Association and was a coach for the youth bowling league (YABA). Hammie participated in all of the Charles City bowling tournaments, 53 state bowling tournaments and 16 national bowling tournaments, many times finishing the tournaments in trophy standings. She was also very active within the community. Hammie was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose.

Hammie’s ultimate pride and joy was her family. She was a devoted and nurturing Mother and Grandmother. She especially treasured time spent preparing for family gatherings in her home, most notably, the holidays and birthdays. Her family describe her as a rock-strong woman who always seemed content, happy and giving. She held her family close and felt her life was full and complete. When confronted with her illness, she found unbelievable strength to "not let the cancer get her down and carry on." Some of Hammie’s favorite leisure activities, beyond bowling, included putting together jig-saw puzzles, spending time with her friends, collecting ink pens and mugs and watching all sports, especially cheering for the Minnesota teams. Her children and grandchildren recall that she made wonderful fudge, almond bark and peanut butter and marshmallow bars. All who knew Hammie, remember her fondness for the color purple.

Hammie will be dearly treasured in the hearts of all who shared in her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith "Judi" Gartland of Charles City; her son, Kenneth "Kenny" (Martha "Marty") of Monmouth, Ill.; her four grandchildren, Melvin (Stacey Rogers) Hewitt, Shane (Lindsay Kalvig) Hewitt, Tony Taylor and Shelley Wood; six great-grandchildren, Chase, Dakota, Tanner, Tia, Aryssia and Raven and one great-great-grandson, Keigan. Hammie will also be sadly missed by her special
friends, Ann Dixon and Alyce Gallaher both of Austin, Minn., and the Barry family and Judy Trogee, whom Hammie considered her extended family and numerous other relatives and friends.

Hammie is preceded in death by her parents, August and Eudora Husemoller and her brother, Glenn Husemoller.
