Caleb Dwane Clauson

Caleb Dwane Clauson, infant son of Ryan and Tiffany Clauson, Charles City, was stillborn on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral Services for Caleb Clauson will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the St. John Lutheran Church, Nashua, with the Rev. Martha Halls officiating. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, on Sunday evening from 4 - 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before the service.

Caleb is survived by two brothers, Keaton Carlton Clauson and Carter Wallace Clauson; grandparents, Mary Clauson Ross and Wallace Ross Jr., Nashua; Michael and Tracy Myhre, Necedah, Wis., Susan and Tom Bartels, Watertown, Minn., and Ronald and Blanche DeVoll Sr., Cedar Falls; great grandparents, Anne Ross, Waterloo, Valborg Clauson, Spring Grove, Minn., Rosalie DeVoll, Cedar Falls, and Bev and Harold Sands, Cedar Falls; seven Aunts, ten Uncles, and six cousins. Caleb was preceded in death by great grandparents, Betty Sands, Alvin DeVoll, Carlton Clauson, Wallace Ross Sr., and one great aunt, Mary Lee Otto.

Gerald H."Gerry" Nolte

Gerald H."Gerry" Nolte, 84, of 308 S. Johnson St., in Charles City, died Friday, June 3, 2005, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, where he had been a resident since February.

Gerry's Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City with military respects conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, June 6, from 6-8 p.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. A Scripture vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to Gerry's service.

Gerald Henry Nolte, the son of Gustav H. and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Nolte, was born May 14, 1921, in Fairmont, Minn. He was the youngest child of four sons born to his parents. "Gerry," as he was fondly known as by his relatives and friends, was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Fairmont. He attended schools in Fairmont and St. Paul, Minn.

While attending Concordia High School, he met his future wife, Leona M. "Lee" Maday. The high school sweethearts dated approximately three years and were united in marriage at St. John's Catholic Church in Fairmont on November 18, 1939. Gerry and Lee moved to the Charles City area in 1956 and in the years ahead, became the proud parents of a daughter and three sons. Together, Gerry and Lee shared many interests including golfing, bowling on leagues, vacationing, socializing with friends, bird watching and enjoying the beauty of flower gardens. In Gerry's earlier adult years, he was known to "throw a mean fast ball" on a men's fast pitch softball team.

Gerry was inducted into the United States Marine Corp on June 14, 1944, and served his country during WWII, achieving the rank of PFC-2nd Marine Division. After honorably and faithfully serving his designated time in the service, Gerry was formally discharged from his military duties on January 25, 1946.

Gerry was a hard worker and took great pride in providing for his family. He was employed as manager at Ray's Pizza for 14 years, retiring in 1983. Many in the Floyd County area will well-remember Gerry as a sales manager at Leuthold's Men's Clothing Store for 20 years or working in car sales at the Ford Dealership, both in Charles City.

Gerry was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he was a greeter prior to mass, and a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.

Gerry loved to eat and had a passion for Lee's great home cooked meals. He always felt fortunate throughout his life, to be surrounded by women in the family, who happened to be exceptional cooks! Gerry had a definite sweet tooth for ice cream, chocolate and pastries.

Known as a charming man with a wonderful sense of humor, Gerry had a special bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always entertained when near them and treasured each and every one. "Grandpa" will be sadly missed by Danielle (Matthew) Hecker, John Hild, Michael (Weesa) Hild, Katherine (Brad) Lynne, Christopher Nolte, Nicholas Nolte, Megan Nolte and Sarah Nolte. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Kathleen, Anastasia and Abigail Hecker, Casey and Lindsey Hild, Woody and Marty Hild and Nathan and Alyssa Lynne.

Gerry will be dearly missed by his family and friends who will cherish his memory.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Leona "Lee" Nolte of Charles City; his daughter, Shirley (John) Hild of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; his three sons, Larry (Karen) Nolte of Framingham, Mass.; Stephen Nolte of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Scott (Karen) Nolte of Charles City; his brother, Raymond (Leola) Nolte of Truman, Minn; and his two sister-in-laws, Lucille Sprague and Rosa Maday, both of Fairmont, Minn.

Preceding Gerry in death are his parents, Gustav and Elizabeth Nolte and his two brothers, Alvin and Clarence Nolte.

Marian M. Borg

TUCSON, Arizona - Marian Martha (Bierschenk) Borg, 75, of Tucson, Ariz., passed away on May 17, 2005, at the Northwest Medical Center of pneumonia.

Marian was born Feb. 10, 1930, to William and Martha (Schroeder) Bierschenk. Marian was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Pleasant Hill. She attended Nashua Community Schools, graduating in 1948
.
On Nov. 7, 1959, Marian was married to Clayton Borg. They lived in Tucson, Ariz., since 1962. Marian and Clayton spent summers in Show-Low, Arizona in the White Mountains and winters at their home in Tucson.

Marian's arthritis condition greatly limited her activities in the last few years and she was under the care of her husband, Clayton, until she was hospitalized with pneumonia.

Marian was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, visiting with family and friends, traveling and was a volunteer at the hospital for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Martha Bierschenk; a brother, Edwin; and sister, Lois Scoles. She is survived by her husband, Clayton; a brother, Roy (Dorothy) Bierschenk of Nashua; and a sister, Dorothy (Thomas) Wilson of Royal Oaks, Michigan. Also several nieces and nephews.

Memorials will be given to the Arthritis Foundation.


Helen M. Klemesrud

Helen M. Klemesrud, 79, of 910 13th St., in Charles City, died early Monday morning, June 6, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City with the Rev. David Werges officiating. Interment will be at Rock Creek Cemetery in Osage.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Helen Maxine Klemesrud was born Dec. 20, 1925, in Bassett, Neb. She was one of four children born to Rudolph and Lillie (Chambers) Hansen. Helen lived her formative years in Bassett, where she attended school. On April 11, 1942, Helen was united in marriage to James Reginald Klemesrud in Nora Springs. Helen had lived in Charles City for most of her married life. She was employed as an assistant to Dr. Pelz and Dr. Schmidel in Charles City throughout her working life. She was active in life, her interest and favorite passion included quilting in her home and also with the Congregational Church in Charles City.

Helen's greatest priority was caring for her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Some of her favorite leisure activities included driving and checking out all of the different scenery, visiting with people, spending time with her dog "Shelly," and Helen was also an avid reader.

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Helen's life are her five children, Kathleen (William) Jacobs of Charles City; Gregory (Myrna) Klemesrud of Mason City; James H. (Joyce) Klemesrud of New Richmond, Wisc.; Normand (Linda) Klemesrud of Charles City and William (Sharlet) Klemesrud of Floyd; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James R. Klemesrud on Oct. 15, 1988; a great-grandson; one sister, Yvonne Lacoste; and two brothers, Donald and Henry Hansen.

NEW HAMPTON - Zachary J. Conway, 15, of Colwell, died Monday, June 7, 2005, at his parents' home from complications of cerebral palsy.

Zachary J. Conway

Zachary J. Conway, 15, of Colwell, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at his parents' home from complications of cerebral palsy.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Friday, June 10 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Burial will be in the Beckweth Cemetery at Colwell.

Zachary Joseph Conway was born June 23, 1989, at Rochester, Minn., the son of Chad & Liz (Conway) Perkins. He lived with his family in Nashua and attended River Hills School in Cedar Falls. The family later moved to Colwell and he attended New Hampton Community School and graduated the eighth grade this past May. He enjoyed his bus rides to school with his bus driver Bud Drewelow. Zachary was born with cerebral palsy and was unable to speak, but he had a way of communicating in other ways and was very able to get his point across. Despite his ailment, Zachary had a smile that could light up a room.

Zachary is survived by his parents Chad and Liz Perkins of Colwell; a brother, Zane Perkins; a sister, Zoe Perkins; maternal grandmother Sharon (Neal) Reetz of Charles City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Clarence Conway and paternal grandparents Paul & Sandra Perkins.

Vyrlee Barrett

Vyrlee June Barrett, 87, died June 5, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, at the Congregational Church in Manchester, Iowa.


Melvin and Avis Johnson

ALTA VISTA - Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista for Melvin and Avis Johnson of Alta Vista, ages 76 and 74 respectively, who died Monday, June 6, 2005, as a result of an automobile accident south of Cresco.

Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Alta Vista.

Carl Roger Lamb

ESTHERVILLE, Iowa -Carl R. Lamb died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., at the age of 77 years.

Funeral services were held at June 9 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Estherville, Iowa, with interment in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Ringsted, Iowa. V.F.W Post #3388 & American Legion #91 of Estherville performed the military graveside rites.

Carl Roger Lamb, the son of Lee and Anne Gayle (Heft) Lamb was born September 29, 1927, in Rockford, Iowa. He was a graduate of Marble Rock High School.

On June 24, 1951, Carl was united in marriage to Norma Nelson. During the Korean Conflict, Carl served in the United States Army as a Corporal in Signal Corp. Carl was employed as a mechanic at Allison Implement in Allison, Iowa, for twelve years. He was later employed at Reeds Implement in Ringsted, Iowa. In 1966, they moved to Estherville where Carl was employed at Ray's Farm Store for many years. Later he was employed by Firestone and Christensen-Larson Construction.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 91 in Estherville.

Carl's memory will be cherished by his wife, Norma of Estherville; his children: Kathlyn Reed of Oakgrove, Minn.; Cindy Lamb of Buffalo, N.Y.; Nancy Hargens of Belleville, Ill.; three grandchildren; Derek, Danelle Hargens and Joshua Reed; one brother, Marvin Lamb and his wife, Alice of Charles City, and their family.

Preceding Carl in death were his parents and his sister, Donna Schlick.

Doris Thoe

Doris Thoe, 76, of Charles City, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at her residence.

Funeral services for Doris Thoe will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Doris June Schwartz Thoe was born June 30, 1928, at Chatfield, Minn., the daughter of Anthony and Lena (Weber) Schwartz. She received her education at Chatfield, Minn. On May 16, 1953, she was united in marriage to Arthur Thoe at Stewartville, Minn. The couple then moved to Charles City where they have remained. Doris was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Her interests included sewing, cooking, reading and interior decorating.

Living family members include her husband, Arthur Thoe of Charles City; a daughter, Toni Fischer of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, Dan Fischer and Sarah Fischer; and a sister, Betty Stameskkin of Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son; Robert Thoe; three brothers, Kenneth, Neal and Russell Schwartz; and two sisters, Alice Cullen and Grace Kinnear.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society, 130 Fourth Street SW, Mason City, IA 50401, with designation to ovarian cancer.

Roy L. Williams

ROCKFORD -- Roy L. Williams, 72, 301 7th St. NE Apt. #11 of Rockford, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2005, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, 7601 34th Ave. S., Assembly area #5, Minneapolis, Minn, Pastor Patricia Shaw will officiate and military rites will be accorded by the Fort Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad. Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Roy L. Williams memorial fund.

Roy Lee Williams was born February 27, 1933, in Central City, Ky., to Rufus and Emma (Doss) Williams. The family later moved to Michigan where Roy attended and finished school. Roy stood 6' tall and he played center for his high school basketball team and fullback on the football team.

He joined the Army in April of 1953 and served as a drill instructor at Fort Carson, Colorado during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1955 with the rank of Corporal. The story Roy told was, while loading on the airplane to head to Korea when he was pulled off with two other soldiers to stay in camp and instruct, serving with E Company, 61 Infantry Regiment.

In 1954 he was married to Janet King and to this union two children were born. After moving to Iowa, he held many jobs until he was employed with the Model Printing Company in Manchester, IA working as a custom printer. He played many years of fast pitch softball and was a very good pitcher, breaking wooden bats with his curve ball was his specialty. Roy also coached little league baseball and later other softball teams.

He enjoyed collecting antiques and firearms and had at different times some of the finest collections of Winchester Rifles, Smith and Wesson Revolvers, Civil War artifacts, Indian arrowheads, World War II German pistols and other memorabilia. He also collected police badges and photos. He loved looking for that special collectable that would always make his display better, and made many friends in the process.

In 1976 he was married to Cindy Edaburn. He spent many happy years collecting antiques with her and doing his best to help raise her children. After a short time in Florida, Roy moved to Rochester, Minn., where he worked as a security guard for the federal prison until at the age of 62, the diagnosis of diabetes caused him to retire. He spent the rest of his life enjoying flea markets, auctions, buying and selling collectibles and spending time with his grandchildren and his special friend, Shirley Young of Rochester, Minn.

Roy is survived by his son, Bradley (Doris) Williams of Rockford, Iowa; his daughter, Kathleen (Earl) Swarts of Bettendorf, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jessica (Tony) Grandinetti; Barry, Martin, Lynette, and Jordan Williams; one great granddaughter, Alexandria Grandinetti; one brother, Bob Williams of Mesa, Ariz., and one sister, Helen Vargo of Apache Junction, Ariz.

Roy always was very grateful of anything done for him and always appreciated a "please" and "thank you." He goes to a better place, but will be missed by his friends and family.

Vyrlee J. Barrett

Vyrlee J. Barrett, 87, formerly of Manchester, passed away late Sunday evening, June 5, 2005, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Nursing Home in Charles City, following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday June 9, at Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Manchester with the Rev. Kurt Pasko officiating. Burial was made in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.Vyrlee June, daughter of Thomas and Ina (Ashbaugh) Nuckolls, was born June 21, 1917, in Des Moines, where she graduated from high school.

She was united in marriage to Harley F. Barrett July 19, 1935, and made their home in Des Moines for several years. After Mr. Barrettâs discharge from the U.S. Navy following WWII they moved to Lake City where they started their own furniture business. They came to Manchester in 1953 where they owned and operated Barrett Furniture for 23 years.

In Manchester she had been an active member of Community Congregational Church, the Manchester Golf and Country Club and Tri-T womenâs club, and worked in the family business. For years she and Harley enjoyed their summers in Walker, Minn., and winters in Florida.

She is survived by two sons, Gary (Dianne) of Walker, Minn., and Daniel (Sarah) of Charles City, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harley, three brothers Perry, Lyman and Bud, two sisters Hazel and Georgia and one son, Thomas Barrett.

Jesse W. Delap

Funeral services for Jesse W. Delap, 87, of 5 Cedar Terrace South, Charles City, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2005, at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Charles City,with Pastor David Werjes officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City, with Military Rites conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Sunnyside Memory Chapel, 2267 Old Highway 218 S., Charles City, and at the church on Friday one hour before services.Jesse W. Delap was born December 9, 1917, in rural Deerfield, Chickasaw County, a son of Charles and Minnie Edith (Nelson) Delap, and died Monday, June 13, 2005, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City under the care of Hospice.

He received his education in the rural Floyd County Schools and attended the Charles City Public Schools. He was inducted into the United States Army on April 18, 1941, where he served with the 133rd Inf. Regt. He was Honorably Discharged on June 25, 1945. Following his discharge he returned to Charles City where he was employed for the Oliver Tractor Works and Sherman Nursery for 35 years. He was previously married to Mildred Banks.

On May 21, 1955, he was united in marriage to Wyonna (Dill) Logan in Mason City. They managed the Greenfield Mobile Home Court in Charles City for 25 years. Jesse took particular interest in the mowing and upkeep of the grounds.

Jesse had a great love for music. As a young man he played Guitar and Mandolin for house dances in the area. He was known for trying to sing his way out of trouble. He was an accomplished Bowler, and was named to the Charles City Men's Bowling Hall of Fame. Jesse enjoyed woodworking and made clocks for family members. He was an avid coin collector.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 50 years Wyonna of Charles City, Three daughters: Rita (Robert) Duncan, Jeanne (Stephen) Martin Sr., all of Charles City, Penny (Brian) Jaeger of Harper, Kan., two sons: Joseph E. Logan Jr. of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Bruce (Janet) Delap of Charles City; 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; a special buddy and companion, his Chihuahua, Micki. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Florence Griffin, Esther Parker, Dorothy Ferch, and one brother: Edward Delap.

Lanora Marie Shultz

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Lanora Marie Shultz, 92, of 151 Roadrunner Pkwy, Las Cruces, New Mexico, formerly of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2005 at the United Methodist Church, Marble Rock, with Pastor Jim Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Lanora Marie Shultz was born August 30, 1912, in Marble Rock, Floyd County, a daughter of Alton Martin and Maude Beatrice (Davis) Preston, and died Monday, June 13, 2005, at the Village at North Rise, Las Cruces, N.M.

She received her education in the Marble Rock Public Schools graduating in 1930. Later she attended St. Paul Bible College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Lanora was united in marriage to Earl Raymond Shultz on August 12, 1938, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union were born four children.

Lanora was a homemaker on the family farm and provided loving care for her husband and children. She was a member of the Home and Garden Club and the United Methodist Women. Lanora also enjoyed bowling, traveling and being outdoors.

Living family members include her two daughters: Edith (Robert) Norris of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Margaret (Reldon)Beck of Las Cruces, N.M.; a son, Paul Gene Shultz of Fairbanks, Alaska; three grandsons: Michael (Debra) Norris of Omaha, Neb., Joseph Beck of Las Cruces, N.M., Loren (Sharon) Beck of McGehee, Ariz.; five great grandchildren: Ian Norris and Sydney Norris of Omaha Neb., Bryan Beck, Jeffery Beck, and Nathan Beck all of McGehee, Ariz.; two brothers-in law, Rodney Benner, Clear Lake, and Lowell Shultz, Charles City; four sisters-in-law: Pauline Shultz and Shirley Shultz of Charles City, Margaret Shultz of Greene and Hattie Harvig of Osage.

Lanora was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Raymond Shultz (May 2, 1993); her son, Earl Raymond Shultz ( Jan 13,1969), her parents, two sisters: Audrey Billett and Margery Benner; and a brother Ralph Preston.

Joanne E. Appel

Joanne E. Appel, 66, of Charles City, died on Friday, June 17, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Joanne Appel will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City. The Rev. Carl Ries, Pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour before the Mass.

Joanne Elizabeth Miller was born July 19, 1938, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Earl and Irene (Reinartz) Miller. She was raised and educated in Austin and graduated from Pacelli High School. She continued her education in Rochester, Minn., at the St. Mary's Hospital where she received her nursing license as an LPN. She worked for St. Mary's hospital for a brief time following her training. On July 11, 1959, she was united in marriage to Rodney A. Appel in Austin. The couple then moved to Charles City where they raised their family. Rodney worked for White Farms and farmed. Joanne was employed with Salsbury Baptist Home and the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home before her health disability forced her retirement. Joanne was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She enjoyed working on the farm, reading and watching her soaps and "The Price Is Right" on TV. She also loved traveling to Tama or the riverboat in Marquette to enjoy the slots. Spending time with her family was very important to her.

Living relatives include her husband, Rodney, Charles City; her mother, Irene Miller, Austin, Minn.; seven children, Steve and Darla Appel, Farmington, Minn., Sue and Ron Dunn, Alta Vista, Scott Appel and Special friend, Vicky Theilen, Nora Springs, Stacey and Julie Appel, McDonough, Ga., Sandy and Dan Clark, Ionia, Stewart Appel and fianc/ Melissa Gorshe, Denver, and Sara and Steve Robel, Charles City; 13 grandchildren; and one brother, Richard and Judy Miller, Humboldt.

She was preceded in death by her father, and one brother, Donald Miller.


Darrell A. Davis

GREENE - Funeral Services for Darrell A. Davis, 97, of 108 South High St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at the United Methodist Church, Greene, with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 20 at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, and will continue at the church one hour before services.Darrell A. Davis was born June 15, 1908, in Superior, Iowa, a son of Sylvester and Clara (Wilkinson) Davis and died Friday, June 17, 2005 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

On Dec. 15, 1932, Darrell was united in marriage to Sadie Mae Garner, and to this union was born one son, Charles.

At two years old Charles, and his family moved to a farm west of Clarksville where he attended rural school and graduated from Clarksville High School. He attended Iowa State College in Ames majoring in electrical engineering. Darrell entered the Navy on April 3, 1945, and was discharged Feb. 4, 1946.

Darrell and his family lived for a short time in Hampton before moving to Clarksville. In 1949 they moved to Greene and started Davis Oil Co. Darrell and Sadie had a winter home in Mesa, Ariz. which they enjoyed for many years. Sadie died in 1993 and two years later, Darrell was married to Cleo Detra Mead.

Darrell was Past Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge in Clarksville and Past Worthy Patron of Eastern Star in Clarksville. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Greene. He was a 50+ year member of the American Legion and active in Methodist churches in both communities. Darrell sang in the choir at the Greene Methodist Church for many years and was church treasurer for 19 years. He was also a past president of the Greene Country club and has served on the Rose Hill Cemetery Board.

Darrell loved to play golf, go fishing, dance, play cards, travel and spend time with the many friends that shared his life. Most of all, he wanted to be with his family. His greatest joy for the past five years has been spending time with the little guy that called him "Great Papa". Darrell, Sadie and Cleo were blessed with wonderful neighbors who made it possible for them to remain in their home as long as they did. He was grateful for the outstanding care that he received at Liebe Care Center.

Darrell is preceded in death by his first wife, Sadie Garner Davis and his second wife, Cleo Detra Mead, his parents, an infant brother, and a sister.

He is survived by a son, Charles (Jann) Davis of Charles City, two grandchildren, Kristen of Omaha, Bill (Jean) Davis of West Des Moines; one great-grandson, Nicholas Davis; one sister Velva Severson of Denver, Colorado.

Darrell has requested that in lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to the family at 706 Second Ave., Charles City, Iowa 50616, to establish a scholarship fund in his memory.

Neva Ree (Lizer) Shaffner

Neva Ree (Lizer) Shaffner, 107, passed away quietly on June 8, 2005, at her and her daughter's residence in Andover, Minn.

Memorial services for Neva Shaffner will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.The family will greet friends at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.

Neva Shaffner was born May 15, 1898, in Walker, the daughter of Jay and Fanny (Conniff) Lizer. She graduated from East High School in Waterloo and attended Gates Business School in Waterloo, where she later taught classes. Neva married Harry B. Shaffner in 1922 and they lived in Charles City for 30 years. They were blessed with a daughter, Beverly Jane Shaffner (Fix) on March 24, 1925. Harry and Neva moved to the Los Angeles area where they lived for seven years. Harry passed away in 1959 at the age of 59 while they were living in Los Angeles. Neva then lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, and St. Clair, Mi., returned to Charles City and later moved to Andover, Minn. She was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, the Congregational Church Women's Fellowship and a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Neva was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be dearly missed.

Living family members include a daughter, Beverly Fix of Andover, Minn.; four grandsons and their families, Dan (Susan) Fix of Petaluma, Calif., Jon (Kim) Fix of Navato, Calif., Bill (Julie) Fix of Oak Grove, Minn., and Charles (Geormina) Fix of Glendale, Calif.; and six great grandchildren.

Neva was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters; a brother; and a son-in-law, Bill Fix, Jr.

Gladys M. Swedberg

NORA SPRINGS - Gladys M. Swedberg, 93, of Nora Springs, formerly of Charles City and Rudd , died Friday, June 17, 2005, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 20, 2005, at the Rudd United Methodist Chruch, 611 6th Street, Rudd, with Reverend Jim Turner officiating. Burial took place at the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Gladys Marie (Allen) Swedberg was born October 28, 1911, to Wilbur and Mary (Christiansen) Allen in Dixon, Illinois. At the age of four the family moved to a farm in Nebraska where she received her elementary and high school education. She attended the University of Nebraska where she received her teaching certificate and taught in the rural schools.

On June 28, 1933 she was married to Lyle Swedberg and settled on a farm. In 1935 they moved to Red Oak, Iowa and in 1943 they moved Rudd. To this union two sons, Deryl and Donald, were born.

Gladys was baptized and received her Christian education at the Christian Church in Aurora, Neb. She was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church and the Christian Church in Charles City. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years and was active in the Church organizations as long as her health permitted.

Following the death of her husband in February 1961, she moved to Charles City. She worked at the Floyd County Treasure office for 17 years. And for the last six years she was a resident of the Nora Springs Care Center. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and traveling with her many friends. She enjoyed life to the fullest and loved being with her family, grandchildren, and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Deryl (Pat) Swedberg, Lancaster, Mo.; and Don (Marge) Swedberg, Rudd; eight grandchildren, Dean Swedberg, Terri (Steve) Nelson, Lisa (John) Dooley, Karmen (Tim) Buckallew, Diana (Rob) Nelson, Kris (Joe) Beeler, Pam Engles, and Jan (Lloyd) Trask; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Clifford Allen, Yucca Valley, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lyle, one sister, Lucille McBride, one brother, William Allen, and a great-grandson, Dakota Swedberg.

John Brummond, Jr

John Brummond, Jr. "Junior," 76, of Ionia, died Monday, June 20, 2005, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Friday, June 24, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia with Monsignor John Hemann and Reverend Linus Rasing concelebrating the mass.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Ionia Funeral Home in Ionia where there will be a 7 p.m. scripture service.

John Brummond, Jr. "Junior" was born on August 14, 1928, to John "Jack" and Marie (Rink) Brummond of Ionia. A life-long resident of Ionia, John graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1946 and married Norma Kathryn Kramer on June 9, 1949, at St. Boniface Church in Ionia.

From 1946 to 1963, John worked at the Ionia Produce with his father where he handled various egg routes of the business. He was then employed at Salisburyâs Laboratories in Charles City, and held other jobs until his retirement in 1991. In his "retirement" years, he worked for the town of Ionia, taking great pride in maintaining the townâs property and streets. He served the people of Ionia in a variety of ways, including being mayor and many years on the town council.

A life-long member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, he served as a member of the church council and enjoyed assisting and participating in the Monday night bingo games. He loved playing cards, softball, gardening, and spending time with family on picnics and trips. His zest for life was matched only by his engaging smile and his teasing nature.

Survivors include Norma, his wife of 56 years; 11 children, David (Peggy) Brummond of Oakton, Va.; Bill (Kathy) Brummond of Apple Valley, Minn.; Mike Brummond of Charles City; Chuck (Maggie) Brummond of Iowa City; Bob (Wendy) Brummond of St. Louis, Mo.; Jane (K) Wold of Iowa City; Susan (Robin) Dickey of St. Louis, Mo.; Doris (Jeff) Payne of Des Moines; Jim Brummond of Cedar Rapids; Pat (Joel) Myers of Iowa City; Joan (Chris) Bowman of Des Moines; and 30 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Thomas in 1969, his father Jack in 1979 and his mother Marie in 1981.

Elmer Litterer

Elmer Litterer, 82, of Charles City, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elmer Litterer will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gayle Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday. Elmer William Litterer was born January 27, 1923, on the family farm in southern Floyd County, the son of William F. and Marie (Scheidecker) Litterer. He was raised on the same farm, which is now a Century Farm, and received his education at a Floyd County country school. On October 21, 1945, he was united in marriage to Majoyre "Gerry" Crooks at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed together on the Century Farm until "Gerry's" death on May 14, 1982.

Elmer remained on the farm until his marriage to Carol Darrow Blanchard on May 28, 1999, at which time he moved to Charles City. Farming was Elmer's life and he always looked forward to visiting the farm and watching its progress. Elmer was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Midi's, had served on the board of the Farmers Cooperative Creamery in Nashua, Farm Bureau, Senior Citizens Center, Heritage Club and the Floyd County Historical Society.

Living family members include his wife, Carol Litterer of Charles City; five children, Wayne Litterer of Clarksville, Ron (Jan) Litterer of Greene, Nancy (Ron) Fish of Nashua, Dennis Litterer of Nashua, and David (Barb) Litterer of Waverly; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; three step children, Lori "Blanchard" (Patrick) Byrne of Clear Lake, Kimberly (Christopher) Bienert of Forest City and Holly (Curtis) Jorgensen of Mason City; five step grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Darlene) Litterer of Maquoketa; a sister, Gladys (Lyle) Stauffer of Greene; and a brother-in-law, Dale Stauffer of Charles City.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; a daughter, Marlene Litterer in 1959; a son-in-law, Dennis Katcher; and two sisters, Alice Stauffer and Edna Franke.

Lori Anne Stubenvoll, 56, of 3415 Pierce Avenue, Marinette, Wis., passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2005, at her home.

She was born January 26, 1949, in Charles City, to the Reverend E.C.F. Stubenvoll Sr. and the late Avis (Guthart) Stubenvoll.Funeral services were held May 21, 2005, at First Trinity Lutheran Church, Marinette, Wis.

Burial and Committal Service will be held June 30, at 2 p.m., in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.


LTC (R) William E. Conard

IDA GROVE, Iowa - Lt. Colonel (R) William Edwin Conard, age 83, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Russ L. Burnett will officiate the service, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Military graveside honors will be conducted by McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion. Friends may call at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Wednesday from 3-8 p.m., with the family present from 5-8 p.m. There will be a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.Born December 24, 1921, in Ida Grove, Iowa, William Edwin Conard was the son of Raymond and Eva Christine (Mann) Conard. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1939.

On October 16, 1943, Bill was united in marriage to Anna Louise Feller at Fort Ord, Calif. They raised eight children. Louise passed away on March 25, 1996. Bill married Patricia Ann (Brown) Lingren on July 6, 2001, in Ida Grove.

Following his high school graduation, Bill worked for Coast & Geometric Surveyors in Ida Grove. In 1938, he joined the Iowa National Guard, Medical Battalion, 34th Division, Ida Grove unit. In 1941, he was mobilized and sent to Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, for training. He was then mobilized to North Ireland, and in 1943, returned to the United States where he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Army, World War II. In May of 1944, he was deployed to Saipan, where he earned the Soldier's Medal for Bravery. During the course of 27_ years of service to his country, Bill was deployed to numerous duty stations and was awarded many medals for his service both at home and abroad. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1966. Bill then owned and operated Conard Construction Company until retiring to Texas in 1979.

Affectionately dubbed "Colonel," Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ida Grove. He also belonged to American Legion Post No. 288 in Groesbeck, Texas. He was a life member of North American Hunt Club, NRA, and DMOAA. He was active in Republican Party politics and was a member of President George W. Bush's inner circle. He loved golfing, playing cards with his friends, camping, fishing, and being surrounded by his family.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; three sons, Kermit (Patricia) Conard of Anaheim, Calif., Sgt. William E. Conard II, stationed with the Marines at Camp Pendelton, Calif., and Cpl. Raymond P. (Jennifer) Conard II, stationed with the Marines in Iraq; four daughters, Kathy (Patrick) McCann and Darlene (James) Franke, all of Charles City, Linda (Thomas) Colbert and Teresa McCann, all of Elkton, Md.; two stepsons, James M. Summers of Battle Creek, and Steve (Kathy) Lingren of Schleswig; three step-daughters, Brigadier General Susan Lawrence (Neil) Sonne of MacDill AFB, Tampa, Fla., Julie (Patrick) Garoutte of Sioux City, and Kelli Whiteing of Ida Grove; 17 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Mae (Herbert) Wiegel of Lake View; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William L. Conard; a sister, Feryle Beverly Fouts; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Fouts, Sr.


Byron Brown

OSAGE - Byron Brown, 96, of Osage, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services for Byron Brown will be held in August.

Byron Fletcher Brown was born March 7, 1909, in Floyd County, the son of Harry and Augusta (Reser) Brown. He graduated from the Floyd High School and lived his entire life in and around the Floyd and Osage area. Byron worked as a farm laborer for several years before his employment with Deckerâs Meat Packing Plant in Mason City where he worked for 24 years. He had a great interest in music, playing the violin in his childhood years. Other interests included flying, taking lessons from Ray Henry, a local instructor, watching sports on television, playing cards, going to dances and bowling on the Moose Lodge team.

Byron is survived by six nieces and nephews, Marge (Darrell) Sisson of Aitkin, Minn., Colleen (Martin) Nuncio of Richardson, Texas, Joan Thomas of Emory, Texas, David (Sharon) Brown of Ankeny, Susan (Butch) Poolman of Pelican Rapids, Minn., and Norman (Shirley) Brown of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Doris Brown of Emory, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ralph and Art Brown.

Jesse W. Delap

Funeral services for Jesse W. Delap, 87, of 5 Cedar Terrace South, Charles City, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2005, at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Charles City,with Pastor David Werjes officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City, with Military Rites conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Sunnyside Memory Chapel, 2267 Old Highway 218 S., Charles City, and at the church on Friday one hour before services.

Jesse W. Delap was born December 9, 1917, in rural Deerfield, Chickasaw County, a son of Charles and Minnie Edith (Nelson) Delap, and died Monday, June 13, 2005, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City under the care of Hospice.

He received his education in the rural Floyd County Schools and attended the Charles City Public Schools. He was inducted into the United States Army on April 18, 1941, where he served with the 133rd Inf. Regt. He was Honorably Discharged on June 25, 1945. Following his discharge he returned to Charles City where he was employed for the Oliver Tractor Works and Sherman Nursery for 35 years. He was previously married to Mildred Banks.

On May 21, 1955, he was united in marriage to Wyonna (Dill) Logan in Mason City. They managed the Greenfield Mobile Home Court in Charles City for 25 years. Jesse took particular interest in the mowing and upkeep of the grounds.

Jesse had a great love for music. As a young man he played Guitar and Mandolin for house dances in the area. He was known for trying to sing his way out of trouble. He was an accomplished Bowler, and was named to the Charles City Men's Bowling Hall of Fame. Jesse enjoyed woodworking and made clocks for family members. He was an avid coin collector.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 50 years Wyonna of Charles City, Three daughters: Rita (Robert) Duncan, Jeanne (Stephen) Martin Sr., all of Charles City, Penny (Brian) Jaeger of Harper, Kan., two sons: Joseph E. Logan Jr. of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Bruce (Janet) Delap of Charles City; 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; a special buddy and companion, his Chihuahua, Micki. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Florence Griffin, Esther Parker, Dorothy Ferch, and one brother: Edward Delap.

Nathan C. Blanck

WATERLOO - Nathan C. Blanck, 76, of Waterloo died Tuesday morning, June 28, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball in Waterloo, with burial at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday.He was born December 5, 1928, in Charles City the son of George F. and Hazel D. Gideon Blanck. He married Darlene A. Huffman on June 25, 1950, in Charles City. She preceded him in death on December 12, 1993. He then married Margaret Marie Mohring on June 28, 1996, in Waterloo.

Nathan was employed at the Waterloo John Deere Tractor Works as a machinist and trucker for 26 years retiring in 1989. He was also a member of Local #838, was active in the Allen Memorial Hospital Stroke Club, community affairs, and the neighborhood association.

He is survived by his wife, two sons; Charles G. (Rosiland) Blanck of Apalachacola, Fla., Duane E. (Sandra) Godderz of Rudd, four daughters: Sue L. (Rick) Pettit and Marie (Keith) Wright both of Waterloo, Sally L. (George) Culpepper of Rockford, Ill., Patricia (Kerry) Kruger of Nashua; two sisters: Virginia Moore of Des Moines and Ramona (Galen) Morse of Osage; 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers in infancy and three sisters: Dorothy Slater, Darlyn Gerberding and Edith Gerberding. (They married brothers)

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City for Virginia Reams, 86, who died on June 29, 2005, at her home.


Walter E. Lacour

Walter E. Lacour, 96, formerly of 1990 Lancer Ave. in Charles City, died Wednesday morning, June 29, 2005, at the Colonial Manor in Elma, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City with the Pastor David Werges officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue at the funeral home on Friday morning, one hour prior to Walter's service.

Walter Edward Lacour was born April 11, 1909, in Charles City, the son of Edward and Anna (Noss) Lacour. Walter was native to and a lifelong resident of the Floyd County area. On November 25, 1943, Walter was united in marriage to Esther Weiss in Minneapolis, Minn. Walter was a faithful member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Walter was a devoted husband and very loving father. He treasured his family and the time he spent with them. Walter was always willing to help and assist anyone at anytime. Walter will be best remembered for being a very hard worker. His greatest passion in life was farming. He enjoyed livestock especially horses which he nurtured and impeccably cared for. Walter was a man with great common sense, being of practical means and living a life of simplicity.

Walter will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Walter's life are his son, Richard "Dick" (Mary Jo) Lacour of Charles City; three grandchildren, Jason Lacour of Mitchell, Iowa; Katie Lacour of Des Moines, Iowa; Michael Lacour of Ames, Iowa; two step-grandsons, Andrew (Diane) Roethler of North Liberty, Iowa; Christopher (Katharine) Roethler of Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Lois (Devon) Thorsen of Charles City and one brother, James (Dorothy) Lacour of Pasadena, Calif.

Preceding Walter in death are his wife, Esther Lacour on December 24, 2003; one sister, Dorothy Hirsch; one brother, Lloyd Lacour and his parents, Edward and Anna Lacour.
