Jean Wegner

Jean Wegner, 76, of 2551 Woodland Pl, Charles City, died late Sunday evening, January 30, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 3, at Faith Bible Chapel, 1701 Ohio St., Charles City, with Pastor Paul F. Phillips officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, in Floyd.The family will greet friends from 5 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests those wishing to extend memorials may direct them to the Faith Bible Chapel, 1701 Ohio St., Charles City, IA 50616.

Ila Jean Wegner was born February 11, 1928, in Des Moines, to Arthur and Olive Kunkel. She was the only child born to her parents. Jean as she was affectionately known by family and friends attended school in Des Moines, IA, graduating from Lincoln High School. Jean furthered her education by attending A.I.B. enrolled in the Executive Secretarial Course. In 1946, she married and had three children and in 1976 later divorced. On December 29, 1990 Jean was united in marriage to Rev. A.C. Wegner, Jr. at the Faith Bible Chapel in Charles City. In 1983, Jean started the Triple "J" Redemption Center located at 905 Gilbert St. in Charles City and later moved the Center to Floyd. Jean enjoyed time spent with her children, crocheting, knitting and embroidery work. She also liked to garden tending to both her flowers and vegetables. Jean's interests also included bowling. Jean will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her husband, Rev. A.C. Wegner, Jr.; three children, Bob Roberts of Charles City; Barb Roberts of Seattle, Wash., and Tom Roberts of Portland, Ore. Jean is also survived by her step children, Sharol McCoy and Carl Wegner, both of Charles City; Diane Gohr of Las Vegas, Nev., and Paul Wegner of Phoenix, Ariz.; one grandson; one great grandson; step grandchildren; step great grandchildren and a host of friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents.

Eva Boge

Eva Boge, 81, of Charles City, died Monday, January 31, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Eva Boge will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Eva Susan Huckle Boge was born December 13, 1923, at LeMars, the daughter of Aloysius and Catherine (Bender) Huckle. She graduated from the LeMars High School. On September 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Eugene Boge. They lived in North Buena Vista until 1949 when they moved to a farm north of Charles City where they would spend their lives together. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anthony's Circle and V.F.W. Auxiliary. Eva's interests included sewing, gardening and swimming. For a number of years she looked forward to spending their winters in Texas. Eva's family, however, meant everything to her and she made every effort to be a part of their lives.

Living family members include three sons, Kenny (Pam) Boge of Orchard, Roger (Teresa) Boge of Klemme, Gordon 'George' (Janet) Boge of Charles City, and; three daughters, Linda (Bob) Dodd of Klemme, Teresa Boge of Charles City, and Norma (Eldon) Conyers of Des Moines; 20 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Norma L. Boge of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Rita Harms of LeMars; and a brother, Martin (Lou) Huckle of LeMars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on November 12, 2001; a son Bernard 'Barney' on January 29 1994; a grandson, Benjamin Boge; a brother, Duke Huckle; and a brother-in-law, Alfred Harms.

Leone E. Keating

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City for Leone E. Keating, 94, of Story City and formerly of Charles City, who died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City.


Michael J. Smith

ELMA, Iowa - Michael J. Smith, 43, of Lourdes, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 as a result of a snowmobile accident near Lourdes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30 am Friday, February 4 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, (641) 393-2461, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church.

Max H. Wegand

GREENE - Funeral services for Max H. Wegand, 78, of 11381 Lodge Avenue, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene with military honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, where there will be a Public Masonic Services at 7:00 p.m. conducted by Vulcan Lodge 498 A. F. & A. M. of Bristow. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Max Harold Wegand was born October 13, 1926, on the Wegand home place, a son of Clyde Hardman and Edna Mae (Lockwood) Wegand, and died January 31, 2005, completing his circle of life at the place where he was born.

He received his education in the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1944. He enlisted in the United States Navy on October 6, 1944, and served as a Hospital Apprentice Second Class at the U.S. Navy Hospital in Farragut, Idaho. Following his honorable discharge on June 21, 1946, he returned to Greene where he began farming on the home place. During this time he supplemented his income by working various places including Thermogas, Greene Limestone, and Greene Farm Equipment.

On May 11, 1951, he was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Potter at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Greene and to this union were born four children. In 1970, Max became a Standard Oil Agent when he purchased a tank wagon oil business from Jim McLennan, which he operated until his retirement in 1994. Max enjoyed 24 years as a businessman in Greene and loved working with the people he served.

Max was stricken with Parkinson's Disease in 1995-96, but continued to remain active until 2002, when the disease progressed rendering him unable to do the many things he enjoyed.

He was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Greene, Past Master of Alpha Lodge 326 A. F. & A. M., Past Worthy Patron of May Day Chapter O.E.S., 50 year member of Vulcan Lodge 498 A. F. & A. M., Past President of the Round Grove Golf & Country Club, member of the Greene Commercial Club and the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Max had a firm faith in God which led him to focus his life around a hard work ethic, family and friends. He was very proud of his family and of living on the family owned Century Farm. Max took great care of the farm and was especially proud of his yard.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Patricia Ann of Greene; his children: Dan (Jan) Wegand of Glen Rose, Texas, Ann (Terry) Thomason of Greene, Bob (Nancy) Wegand of Grundy Center, Jean (Bob) Fox of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren: Alison and Zak Wegand, Matt (Jamie) Jackson and Melissa Jackson, Christopher (Lupe) Thomason, Sara (Dan) Marsh, Patrick (Kelly) Thomason, Andrew, Ben, and Mollie Fox; five great grandchildren: Cortlynn Jackson, Timothy Thomason, Paige, Claire, Lauren Marsh; two sisters: Mary Lou (Keith) Hadley of Charles City, Barbara (Jim) McKay of Spencer, two brothers-in-law: Mike (Margaret) Potter of Minneapolis, Jim (Jackie) Speedling of Bend, Ore.; many nieces, nephews, and extend family members.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law: Nadine (Eugene) Schrage.

Leone Keating

Leone Keating, 94, of Story City, formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City.

Funeral services for Leone Keating will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Charles City. Pastor Phil Corr will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Leone Estelle Ames Keating was born October 19, 1910, at Charles City, the daughter of Guy and Amy (Beatty) Ames. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1928. On May 5, 1934, she was united in marriage to Stanley Keating at Pocahontas. Leone was employed for many years as a telephone operator in the Traffic Department of Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Church Women United, Charles City Womenâs Club and Telephone Pioneers of America. Her favorite pastime was reading. Leone's family was always very special to her and she looked forward to the time spent with them.

Living family members include a daughter, Kay (Jerry) Swenson of Ames; three sons, Col. James Keating (Ret.) of Indian Wells, Calif., Richard (Karen) Keating of Banning, Calif., and David (Pamela) Keating of South Elgin, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Nona Meyer; and two brothers, Wayne Ames and Guy Ames, Jr.

Lola 'Lou' M. Reetz

NORA SPRINGS -- Lola "Lou" M. Reetz, 72, of Nora springs, formerly of Charles city and Bassett area passed away Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A Memorial Gathering for Family and Friends will be held Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a memorial tribute at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Burial of the ashes will be in Rock Grove Cemetery in Nora springs at a later date.

She is survived by four sons, Doyle Johnson, Jr. (Dee) of Prairie Du Chien, WI, Scott Johnson (Tammy) of Nora springs, David Johnson (Lori) of Waseca, MN and Todd Johnson (Robin) of Memphis, TN; two daughters, Patty Bilharz (Daniel) of Nashua and April Martin of Waseca, MN; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dale & Verne Willert both of Charles City; one sisters, Ramona Jacobson, Toddville.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents; and infant daughter, Tersia Johnson; one sister, Norma Frisbie; one daughter-in-law, Vicki Johnson.

Lola M. Reetz was born Sept. 16, 1932 in Charles City, the daughter of Alfred and Maryetta (Lohr) Willert. She was raised in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1950.

She was united to Doyle dean Johnson on Nov. 26, 1950 at St. Johnâs Lutheran Church in Charles City. To this union seven children were born. They lived in the Bassett area before moving to Nashua. They were later divorced. Lola married Sonny Reetz and they were later divorced.

Along with being a housewife, Lola worked a White Farm for a short time, then was the owner operator of the S & L Tap in Bassett for a number of years. She also owned and operated the Bassett Convenience Store. She later moved to Waseca, Minn. and was employed by Wahis Liquor for about 10 years. She moved to Nora Springs in 2001.

Lola enjoyed her family, gardening, fishing and traveling.

Roger M. Reinhart

MARBLE ROCK - Roger M. Reinhart, 87, of 2829 Dancer Avenue, Marble Rock, died Friday, February 4, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

There will be no services or visitation as Roger has donated his remains to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific purposes. Following, his remains will be cremated and interred at the Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Roger Mervin Reinhart, was born August 22, 1917, in rural Marble Rock, Scott Township, son of Clarence and Olive (Dunning) Reinhart. He received his education in the rural Scott Township Schools and graduated from the Marble Rock High School in 1935.

Following high school, he went to Moline, Ill., to work for John Deere. On February 16, 1940, he was united in marriage to Beth E. Hillman at the Methodist Parsonage in Charles City.

In 1940, he started farming west of Marble Rock in Scott Township until his retirement in 1980. He was also Scott Township Trustee and served on the Floyd County A.S.C.S. Committee.

Living family members include: his wife, Beth, of Marble Rock; one daughter, Karen Yvonne Reinhart of Mason City; one sister, Thelma Carman of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Luella Stover and Ruth Thorne.

Marion V. Suby

MARBLE ROCK - A Celebration of Life Service for Marion V. Suby, 78, of 401 Shepardson Street, Marble Rock, will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the United Methodist Church, Marble Rock with Pastor Kenneth Kent officiating. Interment of Cremains will occur at a later date.

There will be no visitation as cremation has occurred.

Marion Virginia Benton was born August 14, 1926, in Port Huron, Mich., a daughter of Walter Elmer and Mabel Leona (Norris) Benton, and died at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

As a small child, her family moved to Iowa, settling in Northwood and later in Manly where she received her education in the public schools. Following her schooling, she worked as a waitress in Manly. She was united in marriage to Arden Suby on May 2, 1947, in Jacksonville, Minn. Following their marriage, they lived in Fertle and later in Manly and Forest City, where she was employed by Fleet Garden Mfg.in Lake Mills. In 1970, she moved to Hanlontown where she was employed by the grocery store until her retirement in 1979. She did child-care for several years before moving to Marble Rock in July 2003.

Marion was a self-taught woman, being an avid reader, and was well versed in politics and current events. She enjoyed listening to talk radio and classical music. In later years after loosing her sight, she still remained self sufficient, being able to do her own homemaking. Her self-independence was paramount.

She will be sadly missed by her children: Carol (Fred) Wreghitt of Marble Rock, Jan Jones of Ashville, N.C., Craig (Connie) Suby of Freeport, Ill., Doug (special friend Kristie Lambert) Suby of Garner; seven grandchildren: Darla (Gary) Kinseth of Mason City, Jeffery (Nadine) Wreghitt of Hampton, Kristie (Kurt) Richards of Freeport, Ill., Andre (Kristin) Jones, Aaron Jones, Janna (Mike) Watkins, all of Ashville, N.C.; 17 great grandchildren; three sisters: Marie Larson of Estherville, Ginger (Leroy) Helmer, of Manly, and Darlene DeMaris of Lincoln, Neb.

Marion was preceded in death by her husband on July 16, 1984; her parents; and four nephews: Robert Allen Larson, Gerald Larson, Steven Portis, and Michael Portis.

Vivian M. Walters

Vivian Myrteen Walters passed away Saturday, December 25, 2004, at the Scenic Manor Care Facility, Iowa Falls, Iowa. The family members are planning a future memorial service in July.

Vivian Myrteen Thomsen was born December 14, 1916, at Kimballton, Iowa, the daughter of Frank D. and Julia Martha [Nielsen] Thomsen. She attended Kimballton Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1934. In the 1940's she was united in marriage in California to Irvie Walters of Detroit Lakes, Minn. To this union three boys were born: Jesse, James and Joel. The couple later divorced. Vivian was employed in the Insurance and Human Resources Department of Oliver Corporation of Charles City. She was a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles,City.

Vivian Myrteen Walters is survived by her sons: Jesse Walters of Douglas Alaska, James P. Walters and wife, Nancy, of Iowa Falls, and Joel Walters and wife, Ruth, of Goodyear, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers: Frank Thomsen of Washington State and Richard Thomsen of New York, N.Y.; and one sister, Janet Schwartzkopf of Charles City. She was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Julia Thomsen; and one brother, Phillip Thomsen.


Sherry Marzen

NEW SHARON, Iowa - Sherry Ann Marzen, 18, of New Sharon, died Friday, February 4, 2005, of injuries received in an automobile accident north of Oskaloosa.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 9, at 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Bible Church in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Bryan Latchaw officiating, assisted by Reverend Jonathan Myers. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery at New Sharon. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa on Tuesday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.She was born June 24, 1986, at Charles City, the daughter of Daniel and Jeri Boggess Marzen. The family moved to New Sharon in 1998 from Charles City. She graduated from North Mahaska High School in New Sharon, with the class of 2004, and was presently attending Central College in Pella with studies in elementary education. While in high school she was active in choir and served as a class officer. She was very active member of the Fellowship Bible Church in Oskaloosa. She was on the Dean's List at Central, and a recipient of an Academic Dean's Scholarship. Currently, she was working part-time at Tasos in Oskaloosa, and last summer worked in the information booth at Central. She enjoyed babysitting, especially for the Moore family of Samantha, Kyle, Jessica and Danielle.

She is survived by her parents, Dan and Jeri Marzen of New Sharon; two half brothers: Shane (Stacie) Marzen of Cedar Rapids and Ryan Marzen of Clarksville; a nephew, Gabriel Marzen; her maternal grandparents: Earl and Laura Boggess of Charles City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Rose Marzen, and a infant sibling.

A memorial has been established in her name.

Wilma Hoffman

TUCSON, Ariz. - Wilma Hoffman, age 86, of Tucson, Ariz., and formerly of Ionia, died on February 5, 2005, at the hospital in Tucson.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest (Edith) Meyer of Bassett. She married William F. Hoffman of Ionia on June 1, 1936.

She is survived by one son, Robert (Dolores) Hoffman of Castle Rock, Colo.; and one daughter, Janice (Marvin) Pierce of Blairsdale, Calif.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one sister, Bernice Larson-Taglin, of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Hoffman, in October 2004, and a son, William Jr., who was killed in the Ionia tornado in 1948.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the giver's choice.

Dietrich, Manford Klein "Manny"

MADISON, Wisc. - Word has been received of the death of Manford Klein 'Manny' Dietrich, age 96, who passed away on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center.

Manford at one time played piano for silent western movies in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at Gunderson Funeral Home, Madison, Wisc., at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9. Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Ralph Flick

Ralph Flick, 89, a resident of 408 5th Avenue, Charles City, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

A funeral Mass for Ralph Flick will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Ralph Peter Flick was born March 13, 1915, near Ionia, the son of Michael and Julia (Diederich) Flick. He received his education at St. Boniface School in Ionia. On March 8, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mildred Renneberg at Cudworth, Saskatchewan, Canada. They farmed near Ionia all their lives moving to Charles City in 1998. Ralph also was proprietor of Flick Electric for over 50 years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Chickasaw Fliers and the Fish and Game Club. Ralph's interests included flying airplanes, which he did for many years, fishing in Canada, metalworking and building garden tractors.

Living family members include his wife, Mildred of Charles City; a daughter, Judy (James) Chase of Waterloo; a granddaughter Christine Chase of Chicago; two brothers, Louis (Bernice) Flick of Ionia, and Lawrence (Elaine) Flick of Waterloo; and a sister, Agnes (Lambert) Renneberg of Menahga, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Leo, Norbert and John Flick.

Selma Lincoln

Selma Lincoln, 96, a resident of 408 2nd Avenue, Charles City, died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Selma Lincoln will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.

Selma Henrietta Weghorst Lincoln was born January 26, 1909, in Floyd County, the daughter of William and Bertha (Packenbush) Weghorst. She graduated from the Charles City High School. On October 1, 1938, she was united in marriage to Merle Lincoln. Selma worked as an Assistant Librarian at the Charles City Library from 1926 to 1942 and from 1960 to 1974. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and past member of the Charles City Women's Club and Rebekah Lodge. Selma enjoyed homemaking, working outdoors, and attending family get togethers.

Robert Reed

Robert E. "Bob" Reed, 85, of Charles City, died Friday, February 11, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral Services for Bob Reed will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 15, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Gayle Wilcox, associate pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-6 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.

Robert E. Reed was born September 14, 1919, in Charles City, the son of L. E. and Clara (Laun) Reed. He attended Charles City Schools and graduated with the class of 1937. On May 2, 1942, he married Geraldine Taylor of Charles City, in Algonac, Michigan.

Robert served in the US Army Signal Corps for 23 years and obtained the rank of CW3. He saw action in both World War II and the Korean War. His military career spanned the globe. After retiring from the Army, he worked for the State of Iowa Liquor Commission for almost twenty years in the state liquor store and retired in 1982 as the manager.

He was a 50-year member of the St. Charles Masonic Lodge, a Life member of the VFW, Retired Officer's Assn., DAV Assn., and the American Legion.

He was an avid fisherman, tool tester, and enjoyed woodworking, trap shooting and was an expert marksman obtaining both military honors and as a trap shooter. At the age of 70, he taught himself to use the computer.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine, Charles City; two sons, James (Kim) Reed, Shelburne, Vermont, David (Connie) Reed, Tacoma, Washington, and two daughters, Marilyn (Gerald) Frye, Garnavillo, Iowa, and Diane (Robert) Klaiber, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Lisa (Jeff) Mink, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Jennifer Reed, Boston, Massachusetts; and one great-granddaughter, Allison Groom, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn and Eugene, and two sisters, Thelma Oliver and Dorothy Walter.

John A. Swaroff, 91, of 200 3rd Avenue, Charles City died on February 12, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

John Alex Swaroff was born November 16, 1913, in Mason City, the son of Alex and Katheryn (Mischrakoff) Swaroff. He was raised in Mason City and graduated with the Class of 1933.

He was united in marriage to Hildred (Hilly) Elbert on August 10, 1940, in Mason City. He worked for Sieg Auto Parts for 20 years and as owner/operator of Swaroff's Service Inc. from 1961 to 1987 when he retired. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus where he served as Past Grand Knight, 50-year member of Jaycees, where he served as president, the Elks, Heritage Club, and Senior Citizens of Charles City. He also served as a Volunteer Fireman for 31 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting and playing 500. He was also an avid watcher of sports of all kinds and was known for his fondness for collecting, cracking, and selling black walnuts.

Living family members include three daughters, Katie (Jan) Krajewski, Arvada, Colo., Dorothy (Dennis) Bartz, Charles City, and Mary (Allen) Williams, Charles City; two sons, John "Jay" Swaroff, Charles City, and Phil Swaroff, Lincoln, Neb.; 11 grandchildren, Karen and Dan Dwyer, Denver, Colo., Mark and Stefan Krajewski, Littleton, Colo., Dee Johnson, Charles City, Brad and Brenda Bartz, Vinton, Travis and Lisa Bartz, Charles City, Alicia and Tyler Evans, Urbandale, John Martin Swaroff, Lincoln, Neb., Chris and Sarah Williams, Kodiak, Alaska, Angie Williams, Knoxville, Tenn., and Mike Williams, Charles City; and 6 great grandchildren, Alison and Lucas Johnson, Charles City, Tyler, Justin, and Abby Bartz, Vinton, and Blake Williams, Kodiak, Alaska; sisters-in-law Lenore "Totsy" Schlader and husband Jerome, Rockford, and Wilma Elbert, Faribault, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. Esther Tousignant

FAIRBAULT, Minn. - Esther (Mrs. Emery) Tousignant, age 90, of Faribault, the mother of Peter Tousignant of Charles City, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at the St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 18, at 1:00 p.m. from the Divine Mercy Catholic Church at Immaculate Conception in Faribault. Interment will be at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Faribault.Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Friday for one hour prior to the services at the church. The parish prayers will be held on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.


Omer Nystel

ELMA - Omer Nystel, 68, of Jerico, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 18, at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico, with Reverend Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Omer Elroy Nystel was born October 4, 1936, on a farm north of Jerico, the son of Oscar & Ella (Christensen) Nystel. He was baptized and confirmed at the Jerico Lutheran Church and attended school at Paris #7 near his family's home. Omer lived and farmed all of his life on a farm north of Jerico where he was born. He raised cattle and did custom bailing, and most recently worked for Ron Smith at S & S Duraline Trailers. Omer was always busy whether sawing firewood or just tinkering. He was a member of the Jerico Lutheran Church.

Omer is survived by his brother, Walter Nystel of Jerico; three sisters: Lorraine (Paul) Baker of Cottonwood, Ariz., Edna (Jim) Bethany of New Hampton, and Clara Schulz of Mason City; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, niece Cheryl Rae McRoberts, nephew Michael Baker and a brother-in-law Albert Schulz.

Wilbur Ray Martzahn

GREENE - Funeral Services for Wilbur Ray Martzahn, 89, of 11925 Highway 14 Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2005, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Friday, February 18, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First Street, Greene, where there will be a Public Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour before service.Wilbur Ray Martzahn was born December 19, 1915, in Greene, a son of Walter A. and Dora (Busse) Martzahn and died Thursday, February 16, 2005, at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

He was baptized January 30, 1916, and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on May 19, 1929. He received his education in the rural Coldwater Country School and graduated from the Greene High School in 1933. Wilbur chose farming as his life long profession, first working with his father on the family farm and later continuing on his own.

On November 24, 1938, he was united in marriage to Violet R. Wolf at St. Peter Lutheran Church. To this union were born four children.

Wilbur will be remembered for the Hereford cows and the pure-bread bulls he raised. He also sold certified seed for oats, alfalfa, and clover. Wilbur also loved to tinker in his shop and often times created homemade inventions to simplify things around the farm.

He served on the St. Peter Church Council and also served as a Coldwater Township School Director for many years.

Wilbur leaves to join his parents; an infant son, Darrell Eugene in 1942; and a daughter-in-law, Lynette Martzahn.

Living family members include his loving wife of 66 years, Violet of Greene; his children: Harlan Martzahn and companion Sandra Greenlee, Delores (Delos) Adelmund, all of Greene, and Ardith (Darrell) Buss of Allison; seven grandchildren: Michael (Tracy) Martzahn of Greene, Daniel (Lori) Martzahn of Lake Charles, La., Darren (Shannon) Martzahn of Hampton, Jodi (Joseph) Conry of Blue Grass, Iowa, Marty (Sara) Adelmund of Greene, Timothy (Kitty) Buss, Traci (Matthew) Gallmeyer all of Allison; and 21 great grandchildren.

David Keith Gauger

KEARNEY, Mo. - David Keith Gauger, 66, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2005, at North Kansas City Hospital. Services were held Friday, February 11, 2005.

David was born April 23, 1939, in Mason City, the son of Wayne and Alice Gauger. He grew up in the exact center of Floyd County, and graduated from Charles City High School in 1957. He later attended North Iowa Area Community College. Having spent most of his professional life in sales, Dave traveled for several years in Iowa with Coca Cola and later worked in heavy equipment sales in northwest Missouri. In more recent years, he and his wife, Patsy, owned and operated Kearney Rental and Sales. David was a member of the F.O.G. Cycle Motorcycle Club. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Dave is survived by his mother, Alice Gauger, Charles City; his wife, Patsy Gauger; his daughter, Meredith Cole and husband, Tim, of Kearney; son Wayne Gauger and wife, Stephanie, of Lee's Summit; and three granddaughters: Sydney, Avery and Sarah. He is also survived by his brother Wayne Gauger and wife, Anita, of Moline, Ill.; his stepchildren: Tim Heiman and wife, Carlene, of Kansas City, Angie Nevins of Kearney, and Dan Heiman and wife, Chris, of Kansas City; and step-grandchildren Jennifer and Jon Nevins, Matthew, Kyle and Eric Heiman, and Francesca and Max Cole.

Ronald L. Beatty

NEW HAMPTON - Ronald L. (Clyde) Beatty, age 65, of New Hampton, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, February 19, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating Mass. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton.

Ronald was born December 18, 1939, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the son of Jack and Florence (Johnson) Roach. He attended grade school in Eureka Springs, Decorah and Charles City. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1959. Ronald enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July of 1959 and received an honorable discharge to the Naval Reserves on July 5, 1963. Before moving back to Iowa, he worked for Northrup Aircraft in California.After moving back, Ronald worked for the former White Farm Equipment Company, Charles City, from 1966 until 1980. On May 27, 1967, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Reilly Ridge) in Lawler, he married Elaine Franzen. To this union a daughter, Brenda, and a son, Kevin, were born.

While being laid off at White Farm during the 1960's and early 70's, Ronald also worked for the Waverly and New Hampton Power Plants. Ronald worked from 1980-1982 at John Deere in Waterloo and then worked at Tri-Mark in New Hampton until 1986. In 1996, he began working for G.M.T. in Waverly until retiring in 2003. On September 28, 1994, his son Kevin died at the age of 23.

Ronald enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren. He also thought the world of his dog friend, Tasha.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; one daughter, Brenda (Tony) Wygle of New Hampton; two grandchildren, Adam and Beth Wygle; mother-in-law, Darlene M. Franzen of Lawler; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Linus) Jacobs of Fredericksburg, and Janice Franzen of Lawler; one brother-in-law, Mike Franzen of Lawler; special cousins, Glenda (Wayne) Nutt and Douglas Johnson, all of California; and his special canine pal, Tasha.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin; his father, Jack Roach; his mother, Florence Beatty; step-father, Orville Beatty; and father-in-law, Ed Franzen.

Bobette was born July 19, 1953, in Cedar Falls. She was a 1971 graduate of DeWitt Central Schools. She married Danny Howe on September 15, 1992, in Davenport. She had worked for Double J Trucking in Davenport.Bobette loved motorcycling, family, friends, gardening and making people laugh.

Survivors include her husband, Danny of New Liberty; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Beth Petersen of Minonk, Ill.; granddaughters Kaitlyn, Kirstyn and Emma Petersen; her father, Dick Johnson of DeWitt; sisters and brothers-in-law, Michelle Reimler of Eldridge, Karen and Charlie Hogan of El Campo, Texas, and Diane and Lonny Sievers of Dixon; and her brother, Kendall and Rachael Johnson of Rhodes; along with nieces, nephews and friends.

Jerry worked at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Corporation and was currently employed at SeaBee Foundry in Hampton. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville. Jerry's hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, and raising registered paint and quarter horses.

Virginia was born on August 22, 1918, in Waterloo, the daughter of Lotin and Maude (Yeager) Holcomb. She was a graduate of Waterloo West High School and had attended Gates Business College. Virginia married Ernest A. V. Ryden on April 8, 1960 in Rock Island, Ill. He preceded her in death on June 15, 2004.

Survivors include two sons: Roger (Elaine) Wedeking of Charles City and David (Nancy) Lines of Canyonville, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three brothers: Lava (Betty) Eastman of Plainfield, Robert (Louise) Eastman of Waterloo and Paul Eastman of Flagstaff, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Dennis and Lawrence; three brothers, Jim Holcomb, Gary and Richard Eastman; and three sisters, Clara Patton, Orra Krie and Edith Rich.

Nadine Meta Caroline Wedeking

Nadine Meta Caroline Wedeking, 81, of Clarksville, Iowa, died Monday, February 21, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Nadine was born on December 25, 1923, in Bremer County, the daughter of Herman and Marie (Schafer) Benning. She was baptized on February 3, 1924, by Rev. Ewald Hardt, and confirmed on February 13, 1938, by Rev. Kurt Kielhorn, both at First Evangelical Church, Pleasant Valley. She attended rural school in Fremont #3 in Butler County and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1941. Following high school, Nadine attended Wartburg College for two years. She then taught country school in Butler #6 for two years. On April 4, 1945, Nadine was united in marriage to Mervin G. Wedeking at First Evangelical & Reformed Church, Pleasant Valley. The couple made their home in Fremont Township for one year before moving to Mervin's family farm in Butler Township. The couple farmed and raised their family on the farm until retiring and moving to Clarksville in March 1989. Nadine worked in the Clarksville School in food service for thirteen years, retiring in the spring of 1992.Nadine was an active member of the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Nadine will be remembered for her dedication to her family and her faith.

Nadine is survived by her twelve children and their spouses, Susan and Ron Negan of Shell Rock, Carol and Francis Edeker of Clarksville, Stanley and Sue Wedeking of Plainfield, Patricia and Lloyd Calease of Clarksville, Rebecca and Bill Schlitter of Aurora, Colorado, Paula and Walt Schmitt of Marble Rock, Eric and Cindy Wedeking of Clarksville, Timothy and Sue Wedeking of Clarksville, Kurt and Melanie Wedeking of Clarksville, Terri and Jeff Leerhoff of Linden, Jeffrey Wedeking and his friend, Kim Bedard of Clarksville, Drew and Jodi Wedeking of Clarksville; 48 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Darlene Benning of Plainfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Mervin Wedeking on February 17, 2000; two brothers, Lawrence Benning in 1986, Clarence Benning in 1998; and by one grandson, Jaret Negan in 1970.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 25, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley with Rev. Anne Sunday officiating. Burial will be held in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. A memorial fund will be established at a later date.

Thelma Hansen, 89, of Charles City, died on Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Private Family Graveside Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Thelma Caroline Hansen was born November 7, 1915, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Ben and Margaret (Gray) McClout. She was raised and educated in Cerro Gordo County. On June 14, 1934, she was united in marriage to Chris Hansen at the West St. Charles Parsonage. The couple farmed near Niles Corner, rural Charles City. Thelma also spent many years working with the nursing home and cared for people in their homes. She was a past member of the Assembly of God Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Center and Moose Lodge.

Surviving family members include her son Larry Hansen and wife, Nancy of Mankato, Minn.; two grandchildren, Melody Schmeling and husband George of Eagle Lake, Minn., and Andrew Hansen of Eden Prairie, and fianc/ Andrea Prokupek of Prior Lake, Minn.; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Alexis, and Autumn Schemeling, all of Eagle Lake, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Chris in 1958; and two brothers.
