Ellen Gates

Ellen Gates, 90, of Charles City, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Ellen Gates will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Ruth Yeaton, of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the West Side Cemetery, Marble Rock.

The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until service time.

Jerry Keith Eckenrod

BELLE PLAINE, Iowa - Jerry Keith Eckenrod, age 63, formerly of Van Horne, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, in St. Louis, Mo., after suffering an apparent heart attack after attending the NCAA Wrestling Tournament.

Funeral Services were held Friday, March 25, at the Benton Community High School in Van Horne. Private Committal Services took place at Salem Cemetery in Van Horne. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Benton Community Weight Room.

Jerry was born November 13, 1941, at his family's farm home near Ionia to Leonard and Cleo (Tucker) Eckenrod. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1960 and then attended Mason City Jr. College in Mason City. On July 24, 1965, he married his college sweetheart, Diane D. Cheney, at the Presbyterian Church in Greene. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Winona State College in Winona, Minn., in 1968. That fall, he began his long and successful teaching and coaching career with the Benton Community School District. He served as the head wrestling coach for 27 years and his role as assistant football coach and educator spanned 35 years.

Since his retirement, he had fulfilled a lifelong dream of training dogs, working as a hunting guide and living on an acreage where his dogs could run and train, and his seven grandkids could play. He had a true passion for his family and many friends.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Diane; his children: Grant Eckenrod and wife, Traci, and their children Morgan, Madison and McKenna of Williamsburg, Iowa; Jason Eckenrod and wife, Suzanne, and their children Jacob and Lexi of Mt. Zion, Ill.; and Dana Nichols and husband, Dave, and their children Whitney, and Morgan of Bettendorf; his siblings: Shirley Eckenrod of Muskego, Wisc., Mary Lou Haaker and husband, Bob, of Flippen, Ariz., Kenny Eckenrod and wife, Mabel, and Bob Eckenrod and wife, Fonda, all of Waterloo; his sisters-in-law: Lorraine Eckenrod of Charles City, Fern Eckenrod of Nashua and Pauline Eckenrod of New Hampton; his mother-in-law, Dawn Cheney of Greene; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

His parents; brothers Don, Les and Rich Eckenrod; his sister Pat Schwartzkopf and her husband, Francis; his father-in-law, Paul Cheney, and his nephew, Mike Eckenrod, all preceded him in death.

Gertrude Kelly

Gertrude Kelly, 96, of Charles City, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Gertrude Kelly will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Elma.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Gertrude Isabelle Palmersheim Kelly was born Feb. 16, 1909, at Elma, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Biwer) Palmersheim. She graduated in 1926 from the Immaculate Conception School at Elma. On Nov. 24, 1943 she was united in marriage to Bernard Kelly at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Elma. She moved to Charles City in 1968. Gertrude worked at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home for 14 years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Mary's Circle and the Cedar Terrace Tenant Aerobics. Her interests included flower gardening, making scrubbies, working daily crossword puzzles, playing cards, reading, shopping and going out to lunch. Gertrude will always be remembered for her faith in God and her love and concern for her family.

Living family members include four children, Ray (Sandy) Kelly of Minneapolis, Minn., John (Ann) Kelly of Cedar Rapids, Mary (Gary) Burke of Waverly, and Bernadette Kelly of Eden Prairie, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Bob) Bruce, Nathan (Angie) Kelly, Brian (Tori) Kelly, Jason Kelly, Chad Kelly, Sara (Jeff) Curphey and Scott (Jennifer) Burke; three great grandchildren, Walker, Jamey and Reagan Kelly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard in 1965, three brothers, Matt, Earl and Pete Palmersheim; and two sisters, Chris Schmit and Marie Gleason.

Ellen Gates

Ellen Gates, 90, of Charles City, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Ellen Louise Melugin Gates was born June 24, 1914, at Marble Rock, the daughter of William and Myrtie (Keith) Melugin. She graduated from the Marble Rock High School. On June 24, 1944, she was united in marriage to Darrow Gates at Charles City. Darrow died in 1957. Ellen worked in various restaurants and as a housekeeper for a number of years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star. Ellen enjoyed fishing, baking and working crossword puzzles.

Living family members include a son, D. Blaine Gates of Mason City; two grandchildren, David (Kathy) Gates and Jennifer (John) Bennington; five great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Melugin of Fredericksburg and Margaret Majewski of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant grandson, Douglas Gates; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Gates; four brothers and a sister.

Opal Kelly

Opal Kelly, 95, of Marble Rock, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Opal Kelly will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Maryâs Catholic Church, Roseville. Monsignor Walter Brunkan, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. followed by the reciting of the Rosary. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Opal Faye Randall Kelly was born Oct. 11, 1909, at Marble Rock, the daughter of Elmer and Mamie (Hubbard) Randall. She graduated in 1927 from the Marble Rock High School. Upon graduation she taught school and helped on the farm. On February 6, 1943, she was united in marriage to Joseph Kelly at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville. Opal spent all of her life on the family farm and also worked for 16 years at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. She was a long time active member of Saint Maryâs Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. Opal had many interests including, bird watching, gardening, doing yard work, raising chickens and turkeys, reading, writing letters, keeping a diary, reminiscing, avid follower of Wheel of Fortune and caring for her dog, April. Opal's family was very important to her and she always took a special interest in them.

Living family members include a son, Norman (Sara) Kelly of Marble Rock; four grandchildren, Bob Kelly of Mason City, Mardel (Rod) Brockett of Reinbeck, Andy (Corey) Kelly of Sherrill and Frank (Mary) Kelly of Marble Rock; four great grandchildren, Skyler Kelly and Kelly, Sadie and Paul Brockett; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on June 5, 1989; a son, Milton Kelly; a brother, Virgil Randall; and a sister, Lucille Randall.

Darrell A. Barth

GREENE - Darrell A. Barth, 88, of 502 West Traer, Greene, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 7, at the First Presbyterian Church, Greene, with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First St., Greene, where there will be a public Scripture Service and Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday one hour before services.Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Darrell A. Barth Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Kathryn Zanger

GRANITE FALLS, Wash. -- Kathryn (Kay) (Jermier) Zanger, 77, Granite Falls, Wash., (formerly of Charles City) died on March 13, 2005, at the Madeleine Villa, Marysville, Wash. Memorial Services will be held in the Fireside Room at the Charles City Library on Monday, April 11, 2005, at 1 p.m., with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating.

Kay was born in Charles City on Sept.18, 1927, to George and Irene (Self) Jermier. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in 1941. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1947. She moved to Seattle in 1952 where she met her beloved husband, Earl Zanger. They owned and operated Multitronics, Inc., a microwave oven repair business for 20 years. They later enjoyed retirement in Snohomish, Wash. Kay loved to cook and bake pies.

She is survived by her children: Laura (Darold) Larson, David (Susan) Zanger and Mark Zanger of Lake Stevens, Wash.; grandchildren Brandon Zanger, Kevin and Lyndsay Larson and Sarah Zanger; sister Dorothy (Melvin) Shahan, Charles City; brothers Donald (Eloise) Jermier of Stamford, Conn., John (Joanne) Jermier of Cedar Falls and Michael (Sharon) Jermier of Urbandale; and a special niece Terry Hansen of Waterloo; and many relatives.

Kay was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; her parents; and a nephew, Tommy Shahan.

Services were held at the Bauer Funeral Chapel in Snohomish, Wash. on Friday, March 18.


Georgia Connor

CENTERVILLE -- Georgia Connor, age 88, of Centerville, died Wednesday afternoon, March 30, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center, Centerville.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2005, at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with Rev. Dr. Beverly Leonard officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Centerville.Georgia was born in Centerville on June 21, 1916, to George and Fern (Dustin) Hart. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1933. Georgia was united in marriage on Jan. 2, 1938 to Francis Connor in Centerville.

Georgia was a member of Gray Ladies helping the VA in Knoxville, Iowa, past president of T.T.T., and assisting with the loan closet, P.E.O., was an Elder and Sunday School Teacher in the First Presbyterian Church, Appanoose County Country Club (13 time Women's Champion), Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader and enjoyed dancing.

Georgia is survived by son Terry Connor and his wife, Holly, of Charles City; daughter Kim Connor-Kuhn and her husband, Tom Kuhn of San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren Kasey and Kate Connor of Omaha, Neb., Kelly Connor of Denver, Col.; brother-in-law Jack Connor of Owensboro, Kent.; niece Chris Carrico of Bowling Green, Kent.; and nephews Robert Connor of Sheridan, Wyo. and Tim Connor of Tucson, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, on March 14, 2005; her parents George and Fern Hart; sisters Genevieve, Burdetta and Sylvia.

Darrell Vokes

Darrell Vokes, 77, of Charles City, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services for Darrell Vokes will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Wesleyan Church. Pastor Ted Clark will officiate. Burial will be in West Side Cemetery, Marble Rock.

The family will greet friends at the church an hour prior to the service.

Darrell Duane Vokes was born December 5, 1927, in Rockford, Iowa, the son of Earl and Mabel Celix Vokes. He was raised and educated in Rockford. Following his schooling, he served his country in the United States Navy. He was married for 19 years to the late Maxine Reams. He worked for Waterloo Casting for many years before moving to Charles City. Darrell was united in marriage to Rebecca Hirsch on December 11, 1993, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was employed with All State Quality Foods in Charles City. His hobbies included fishing, watching Westerns on TV, and especially playing '500' with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Vokes, Charles City; one brother, Delbert 'Dean' Vokes and wife Maggie of Floyd; several nieces and nephews; one step-daughter, Jessica Sullivan, Nashua; and one stepson, Paul David Henkle, Seattle, Wash.

Dale F. Sonne

NASHUA - Dale F. Sonne, 83, of Nashua passed away Tuesday morning, April 5, 2005 at his rural farm home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, at the United Methodist church in Nashua with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Dale Franklin Sonne was born on June 27, 1921, in Niles Township, the son of Harry and Clara Belle (Armstrong) Sonne. He attended rural schools in Niles Township.

He was united in marriage to Madelyn Fisher July 22, 1945, at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. They made their home in Riverton Township before moving to the family farm east of Charles City. Dale milked until and injury in 1965 made it necessary to give up milking. He then became involved with raising Hereford cattle. He was also in the trucking business hauling livestock , grain and furniture. In 1992 they moved to the Fisher family farm north of Nashua.

Dale was an active member of his communities. He was a member of Nashua United Methodist Church, former rural school director, member of the Iowa Cattlemenâs Association, Iowa State Research Farm and a Farm Bureau member for 58 years. He also served as a volunteer fireman for 22 years. Dale was a devoted family man and a dedicated farmer. He loved his family, cattle, horses and blue grass music.

Dale is survived by his wife, Madelyn of Nashua; one son, Larry (Vicky) Sonne of Charles City; one daughter, Jane (Lynn) Elfers of Charles City; one brother, Edward (Edith) Sonne of Nashua; one sister, Ruby Jaeger of Charles City; six grandchildren: Randy Sonne, Sandy (Adam) Barlow and Kathy (Matt) Crooks, Laura Elfers, Lisa Elfers and Carrie Elfers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-in-law, Claire Jaeger; one sister-in-law, Virginia Sonne.


Kathryn Zanger

Edward Gerner

Edward Gerner, 96, of Charles City, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Edward Gerner will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Msgr. Stanley Hayek of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

The family will greet friends Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

 

Edward Lawrence Gerner was born February 27, 1909, at Osterdock, the son of Frank and Theresia (Satran) Gerner. He received his education from Saint Mary's Catholic School, Roseville. Edward proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II in Panama and Nicaragua. In 1946, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Cook. During his working career he worked as a baker specializing in cakes and pastries. Upon his retirement he moved to Charles City. Edward was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests included baking, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Living family members include foster daughters Shirley (Marvin) Hesse, Charles City; Lilly (Bill) Harris, Keokuk; Barbara Tompkins, Keokuk; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, sister Edna McCoy, Charles City; three nieces; Madonna (Lester) Trask, Rita Mehmen, Joyce (Gordon) Jung, and one nephew, Gary (Sharol) McCoy, all of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant brother, and one sister Florence Tykal.

Betty Jean "Beje" Clark

ROCKWELL - Betty Jean "Beje" Clark, 84 of Rockwell died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 15, at the First United Methodist Church, 111 South Georgia Avenue with Rev. Jim Stiles and Rev. Jo Frahm Watkins officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the Beje Clark Memorial Fund.

Betty Jean Walker Clark was born April 18, 1920, in Kansas City, Kan., to Raymond C. and Mary Hunt Walker. She graduated from Hays (Kansas) High School and attended Fort Hays Kansas State College, the University of Utah and the College of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., for her undergraduate work and Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Ill., for graduate work.

She was active in the music field singing in the Betty Lavonn Trio with her sister for more than thirty years, teaching piano and directing thirteen choral groups in California, Utah and Iowa.

Over the years she edited four church papers, published a religious periodical index and wrote for many national periodicals and Indiana and Iowa newspapers. In 1956 she and her sister compiled a book of meditations from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible which was published by Thomas Nelson and Sons. The book was reprinted in 1992.

Beje directed the program for Iowa State students a Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames from 1948 to 1951. Here she met and married Homer Clark.

The family moved to Mason City in 1959 and became members of Wesley United Methodist Church. Always active in church work, Beje held local, district and conference offices in United Methodist Women. She was on the staff of First United Methodist Church as Christian Education Director for seven years and Financial Secretary for five years.

In 1976 she was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives where she served from 1977 to 1990. Her in-depth work on criminal and juvenile justice resulted in a governor's appointment to the Advisory Council to the Division of Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning. She chaired Iowa's Justice Fellowship Task Force and served on the boards of several other justice groups. Beje headed the Restorative Justice Commission for the State of Iowa and as a result of her dedication and public service the Beje Clark Residential Center was founded to enhance public safety by providing structured, correctional supervision to male and female offenders in a community-based setting. Beje was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, P.E.O Chapter LB., League of Women Voters, Rockwell Federated Woman's Club, Federation of Republican Women.

She is survived by her husband, Homer; their daughter, Peggy Read in Mason City; and two sons, Mark and wife, Marie, and Paul and his wife, Pam, all of Mason City. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Mike Andrews and wife Rhonda of Cedar Rapids, Jason Andrews of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Cole Read of Mason City, Nicholas Clark of Tampa, Fla., Danielle, Jared and Mackenzie Clark all of Mason City and one great granddaughter, Jadyn Devine.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; one son, Stephen; and one grandson, Nathan Andrews.

Martin R. "Marty" Robinson

NEW HAMPTON - Martin R. "Marty" Robinson, age 77, of Waterloo, formerly of New Hampton, died of cancer on Sunday evening, April 10, 2005, at his daughter's home in Cedar Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton, with Rev. Dennis D. Juhl of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church of Waterloo celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by four of his daughters. Ann Bennett will be the organist accompanying the Holy Family Resurrection Choir and cantor Joyce Shatek singing, "Hosea, Blest are They, You Are Near," "Be Not Afraid," "Prayer Of St. Francis" and "On Eagles Wings.". His daughter, Theresa Kohlmeyer, granddaughter, Rachel Nosko and grandson, Steven L. Robinson will present the offertory gifts. Eucharistic Ministers will be Kelly Wolfe, Jacqueline Nosko and Lila Klenske. Mass servers are Debbie Gorman and Amber Brietbach. His son Steven will be the Lector.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with Kevin Willadsen, Christopher Willadsen, Michael Nosko, Andrew Wolfe, Levi Robinson and Scott Kohlmeyer as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers are the Fae Stine American Legion Post #38, Ray Klenske, Dick Schumann, Bob "Rocky" Stone, Christopher Groenbeck and David Talbert.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton, where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 6 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the funeral at the church on Thursday.
Marty was born April 23, 1927, in Elmhurst, Ill., the son of Martin Andrew and Audrey Sue (Hackett) Robinson. While still an infant, the Robinson family moved to New Hampton where he was raised and educated. Marty volunteered to join the U.S. Navy and was enlisted into active duty on December 13, 1944, and honorably discharged on July 3, 1946. On September 3, 1947, at St. John Catholic Church in Waterloo, he married Ilene "Lee" Roe. Marty had worked for the former Rath Packing Co. where he had met Ilene. He mastered many occupations. He was a professional painter in Iowa, California and Arizona. His work included many area churches and homes of several Hollywood movie stars. He managed the former All-Star Dairy in Waterloo. The couple owned Marty's Park Entry Motel & Restaurant in Okoboji, Iowa, Marty's Sweet Shop in New Hampton from 1976-1984, and Marty's Fisherman's Wharf in Lansing, Iowa. Marty and Ilene retired in 1990, and moved to Waterloo. Ilene died on March 11, 2000.

Marty loved his family, gardening with his wife and daughters, deep sea fishing and he and Lee were very active in stock car driving and racing. Marty, the 'traveling man,' loved attending as many New Hampton sporting events as possible. While Marty lived many places, his heart belonged to New Hampton.

Survivors include two sons; Daniel (Mary) Robinson of Longview, Texas, Steven (Jackie) of Davenport; five daughters; Theresa Kohlmeyer of Waterloo; Patricia (Phillip) Talbert of West Pueblo, Col., Cecilia (Richard) Hodina of Charles City, Kathleen "Kelly" (Bill) Wolfe of Cedar Falls, Jacqueline (Steven) Nosko of Byron, Ill.; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He also has two sisters; Andrea Brannon of Rochester, Minn., and Cynthia Spurbeck of Corona, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene, his parents and a brother, Jerome Robinson.

Earnest Allen Colbert

NEW HAMPTON - Earnest Allen (Al) Colbert, 86, of New Hampton, Iowa passed away on March 31, 2005 in Mesa, Ariz.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2005 at the Chickasaw Center, 301 North Water Avenue, New Hampton from 1 - 5 p.m. with a special remembrance service beginning at 2 p.m.

Al was born May 7, 1918 in Menlo, Iowa, the eldest son of Charles and Sarah Geneva Colbert. He attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines. He was married to Ferne Varley on June 18, 1939, and was involved in the education field serving as coach, drivers' education teacher, principal and superintendent in various communities in southwest Iowa leaving Scranton, Iowa in 1956 to begin his career as Superintendent of Schools in New Hampton which spanned 24 years. Al also served in the US Navy during World War II.

Al was a great supporter of all school athletic activities and was especially proud of the construction of the athletic field adjoining the new high school opened in 1968. His hobbies were music, camping, boating, rock collecting, painting, silversmithing in Arizona and he loved the outdoors. He was a great hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his trips with his grandsons and friends. He was a long-time member of the Masons, American Legion, and Rotary Club. Following his retirement from the New Hampton Community Schools in 1980, he and Ferne wintered in Tempe and Mesa, Arizona. Ferne preceded him in death on May 21, 1991.

Survivors include one brother, Charles Colbert of Eldrige, Iowa; two sisters, Eloise Adams of Waterloo, Iowa and Ruby Waltz of Stuart, Iowa; his three children, Gary Colbert of New Hampton, Jody Meyer of Charles City and Corinne Ball and her husband Tom of Jefferson; six grandsons, Mark and Eric Meyer and Luke, Jake, Marty and Scott Ball; and his special friend, Wilma Smith of Littleton, Colo.

Besides his wife, Al was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Melbert "Swede" Holzer, age 77, of New Hampton, died Friday afternoon, April 15, 2005, at his home.

Melbert A. Holzer was born July 10, 1927, in Charles City, the son of Edward and Katherine (Rennier) Holzer. he attended rural country schools in Floyd County. On June 17, 1950, at mmaculate Reception Catholic Church in Charles City, he married Shirley Zubrod, of New Hampton. To this union four children were born. The couple moved to Waverly, where Swede worked for the State Highway Commission, and in 1963 moved to a farm south of New Hampton. Swede farmed until 1986, when they moved to their home in New Hampton. He then worked part-time for the Blue Line Oil Co. for many years. Swede will be remembered as a good prankster and his fun-loving nature. He was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley; two daughters: Karla (Jim) Parks of Brooklyn Park, Mn.; Karen (Stephen) McKibbin of Pompano Beach, Fl.; two sons; steven (Susan) Holzerof Springfield, Il.; James Holzer of Naperville, Il. Five grandchildren; Jessica (Mark) Musta, Brian Parks, Kristin Holzer, Megan Holzer and Stephanie (David) Hawkins. One sister, Bernetta "Toddy" (Vincent) Zeien, of Ionia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers; Cletus, Gilbert, Eugene, Francis and Kenneth Holzer in infancy.

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Shirley J. Logan, age 70, of Rochester, Minn. and formerly of Charles City, died Sunday morning April 17, 2005, at Season's Hospice in Rochester.

A funeral mass for Shirley J. Logan will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Pax Christi Catholic Church in Rochester, Minn., with the Rev., Caesar Dralega officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call today, Tuesday, April 19, from 4-7 p.m. at the Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Home in Rochester and one hour before the mass on Wednesday at the church. There will be a 5:30 p.m. rosary service at the Funeral Home today.

Shirley was born Nov. 17, 1934, in Charles City, the daughter of George and Magdeline (Osier) Popes. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Logan on June 23, 1952, in Charles City. She and her husband lived in Charles City and later moved to Owatonna, Minn. for 22 years and, the last 33 years, they have lived in Rochester. Shirley was a homemaker, she enjoyed playing Bingo, collecting angels and snowmen, going to craft shows and gardening.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Kenneth Logan of Rochester; two sons, Michael (Deborah) Logan of Byron, Minn. and Scott Logan of Maui, Hawaii; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob (Marlys) Popes of Plainfield and Raymond Popes of New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Rick and Randy; and one brother, John Popes.

Norma Jean Hobert was born March 21,1925, in Decorah. She was one of seven children born to Edward and Mary (Faldet) Larson. Norma lived her formative years in Decorah, attending and later graduating from Decorah High School, class of 1943. On March 18, 1945, Norma was united in marriage to Marvin C. Hobert at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Norma had lived in Charles City for sixty years. She was employed as a manager of the Charles City Montgomery Ward's store for many years before buying her own Agency in New Hampton in the mid-1970s before retiring in 1986. She was active throughout her life having been a Charter member of the Women of the Moose Lodge #1190, the Community Food Box Program, a volunteer as a Pink Lady at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital and various activities at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, all in Charles City.

Norma's greatest priority was caring for her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Some of her favorite leisure activities included bowling, needlework, the cross stitching of quilts, mowing lawn and other yard work. Norma is remembered as a wonderful cook and hosting Sunday dinners for her family.

Norma will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Norma's life are her three children, Barbara (Daryl) Barnett of Charles City; Pastor Bruce (Liz) Hobert of Mt. Dora, Fla., and Brent (Kathryn) Hobert of Waverly; seven grandchildren, Dana Barnett, Kelly Barnett, Karissa Miller, Nathan Hobert, Shannon Hobert, Amy Hobert and Ryan Hobert; five great grandchildren, Benjamin, Morgan, Rebecca, Zachary and Hannah; one sister, Corenne Seward of Ft. Dodge and a sister-in-law, Laurnetta VanHeuvelen of Charles City.

Norma is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin C. Hobert on November 15, 1993; four sisters and one brother.

Charles Jennings

SUN CITY, Ariz. - Charles Jennings Ellis passed away on Saturday, April 16, in Peoria, Ariz. He was born in Charles City on June 11, 1921, to Carlisle and Ellen (Jennings) Ellis. He attended Shattuck School, Carleton College and graduated from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He later earned his Masters Degree from Iowa State Teachers College and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University.

He owned KCHA radio station.Charles was a World War II veteran and retired as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force. He married Martha Jane Doucett in Scarsdale, NY, on December 27, 1949. She preceded him in death in May 2001.

Charles moved from Ames to Sun City, Ariz., in 1993.

He is survived by his children: Charles, Jeffrey, Christine, Barbara Holm and James, as well as nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his brother Donald Carlisle Ellis.

Services will be held in Sun City, Ariz., at a later date.

Thelma Inez Backer

Memorial Services for Thelma Inez (Smith) Backer, age 87, who passed away February 19, 2005, in Glendale, Ariz., will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Thelma was born August 27, 1917, in Summit, Roberts County, South Dakota, to John and Liddie (Blood) Smith. She moved with her family to the Charles City area shortly after her birth. On June 8, 1940, she was united in marriage to Paul Backer of rural Charles City. They farmed for many years in the area. Following the death of Paul on December 21, 1973, Thelma moved to Glendale, Ariz., to be near her two sons.

She is survived by two sons, Gary (Connie) of Glendale, Ariz. and Dennis Of Mt. Gilead, Ohio; two grandchildren, Robert (Rena) Backer of Glendale, Ariz. and Rodney Backer of Williams, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Robert and Ryan Backer, sons of Robert. She is also survived by a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and other friends and relatives in Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; two brothers, John and Jim; and two sisters, Nida and Ina.

Thelma always had a friendly smile, a helpful nature and loved fishing with her family. She loved arts and crafts and preparing special deserts and pastries.

Dale Willert

Dale Willert, 81, of Charles City, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at his daughter's home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dale Willert will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Reverend David Werges, pastor at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from12:30 p.m. until service time on Friday.

Dale Fredrick Willert was born October 22, 1923, on a farm southeast of Rockford, a son of Alfred and Marietta Maggie (Lohr) Willert. He received his education in a rural school and then attended and graduated from the Charles City High School in 1942. He married Pearl Adams/Schultz on August 12, 1944, in McGregor. In 1945 he served in the United States Navy taking his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Base. Dale worked at the Oliver Tractor Plant in Charles City for many years. Later he raised turkeys west of town. He co-owned a Standard gas station with his son-in-law, Ray, in Haines, Fla., for nine years. The couple returned to Iowa and lived just outside of Bassett for 19 years. After Pearl died, he moved into Charles City. He liked fishing, hunting, and sports. He was a hard worker and a good provider for his family. He was a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, and active in the American Legion since 1945.

Living family members include four children: Bette Willis, Avon Park, Fla., Robert (Betty) Schultz, of Dixon, Ill., Ila Simpson of Charles City and Donald Schultz of East Flat Rock, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Romona Jacobson, Cedar Rapids; and brother, Vern (Maxine) Willert of Charles City. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-parents; his wife of 48 years; two sisters: Norma Frisbie and Lola Reetz; and brother-in-laws Robert Frisbie and Leo Jacobson.

Marcella (Sally) H. Boynton

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Marcella (Sally) H. Boynton, age 80, of Grand Rapids, beloved wife of Jack Boynton, passed away on Monday April, 18, 2005.

Sally was born in Osage on August 26, 1924, moved to Grand Rapids after World War II and married Jack Boynton on October 9, 1948. They traveled and enjoyed spending time together with family and their dogs at the cottage on Big Twin Lake. For almost 40 years they were members of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Boynton, in December of 2000.

Lolabelle A. Newton

EAST MOLINE, Ill. - Lolabelle A. Newton 94, formerly of Rudd died Thursday April 14, 2005, at the Palms of Sebring Nursing and Rehab Center in Sebring, Florida.

Lolabelle was born December 15, 1910, the oldest daughter of John and Lena Pennell. She graduated from Rudd High School and earned a two year teaching certificated from the former State Teachers College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lolabelle taught school in Frederica, Iowa until her marriage to Lowell Newton on September 30, 1933. They lived most of their married life in Rudd. Lolabelle was a food supervisor for the lunch program at the Rudd School for over 20 years until her retirement. After the death of her husband in July 1982, she spent her winters with her son and family in Illinois. In 2003 Lolabelle suffered from a serious heart attack; she then made her residences in Florida and Illinois with her son Doyle and his wife.

Lolabelle was very active in the Rudd community. She was an active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the choir and the UMW. Lolabelle was also an active member of the Rudd Senior Citizens.

Lolabelle is survived by her four sons: Doyle (Dorothy) Newton of East Moline Ill., and Sebring Fla., Myron (Grace) Newton, of Fredericksburg, Va., Charles (Janice) Newton, of Sebring, Fla., Leroy (Carol) Newton, of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, four step grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 12 step great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild, one sister Norma Cook, of Kendall, Mich., and one brother Donald (Ginny) Helmers, of Austin, Texas, two sister-in-laws, Agnes Helmers, of Dewar, Iowa., Frances Helmers, of Faribault, Minn., one brother-in-law William Miller, of Lebanon, Tenn., and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, step father, one sister, two brothers, one granddaughter, two grandsons, one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law.

The Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye Street, Nora Springs, was in charge of the arrangements.


Ferne Lange

WATERVILLE, Minn. - Word has come of the death of Ferne L. Lange, 90, of Waterville, Minn., and formerly of Charles City. Lange and her husband, Milton, managed the county care facility near Charles City for years until their retirement.

Ferne passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at the Lake Shore Inn Nursing Home in Waseca, Minn. Services were held April 2 in Waterville, with burial at the Strawberry Point Cemetery in Strawberry Point, Iowa.

James McDermott

James McDermott, 89, of Charles City, died on Friday, April 22, 2005, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

James Henry McDermott was born March 22, 1916, at Joel, Wisconsin, the son of James and Minnie (Aman) McDermott. He was raised in Algona and Floyd and graduated from Floyd High School. He was united in marriage to Lois M. Rademacher October 13, 1943, at Lampasse, Texas. The couple lived in Texas and Virginia. James served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his discharge the couple made their home in the Charles City area. James worked at White Farm for 30 years before retiring. He enjoyed gardening, Thrasher Festivals, and travel, and especially spending time at the library and YMCA. Many will remember him for his frequent bicycle trips around Charles City. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Those grateful for having shared in his life include: his wife, Lois, Charles City; and their children, Steve McDermott, Chester, Virginia, Barbara (Robert) McMurchy, Floyd, Ronald (Sue) McDermott, Mount Vernon, Rita (Jim) Sanner, Charles City, Mark (Mary) McDermott, Swisher, and David (DeAnna) McDermott, Council Bluffs; 11 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Dale H. Hinz, 59, Charles City, died on Thursday, April 21, 2005.

Funeral Services for Dale Hinz will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 26 at the Cross Lutheran Church, Charles City, with the Rev. James Grabitske officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, from 4-8 p.m. Monday and at the church from 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Dale Harry Hinz was born September 30, 1945, in Waterloo, the son of Harry and Gladys (Faust) Hinz. He attended school in Hudson and graduated from Janesville High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force following High School and served his country during the Viet Nam War. After being honorably discharged, he farmed and worked with Wayne Engineering of Cedar Falls. He was united in marriage to Joyce Brincks on June 16, 1973, in Janesville. Dale worked for White Farm Equipment. He then worked for Top Notch Feeder Pigs for 12 years. He was presently employed with Unverferth Manufacturing and farmed and drove semi for Knapp Farms. Dale was an active and dedicated member of Cross Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and council member and was member of the VFW. He enjoyed playing 500 with the card club, watching NFL games on TV, was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed local dirt track stock car racing.

Living family members include his wife, Joyce, Charles City, daughter, Paula Givens, Mason City, and son, Jason Brincks, Charles City; two grandchildren, Michael and Rachel Givens, Mason City; five brothers and sisters, Marcy (Ken) Kristensen, Hudson, Dick (Cora) Hinz, Cedar Falls, Jane (John) Martin, Waterloo, Harold (Joyce) Hinz, Denver, Rose (Chuck) Demuth, Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerry Hinz.

Stanley E. Bonzer

NASHUA - Stanley E. Bonzer, 80, of Nashua passed away Friday afternoon, April 22, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, at St. John's United Church of Christ / Pleasant Hill rural Nashua with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.He is survived by, one son, William (Linda) Bonzer of Rolla, Mo.; two grandsons, Shane (Amy) Bonzer and Ryan (Amanda) Bonzer; three great grandchildren, Peyton, Collin and Madison Bonzer; one brother, Gordon (Peggy) Bonzer of Nashua; one sister, Helen Waidelich of Nashua.

Stanley was preceded in death by a son, Gary Bonzer on August 20, 1974, and his parents.

Stanley Edwin Bonzer was born on June 24, 1924, on the family farm in Riverton Township, Floyd County, Iowa, the son of Edwin and Mildred (Waite) Bonzer. He attended Riverton #2 country school and graduated from Nashua High School in 1942.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corp on December 30, 1943, he took basic training at Amarillo Field, Texas and was stationed at a number of bases in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946. Stanley returned to Nashua and started farming with his father. In 1948, he started farming 80 acres west of Nashua. Stanley was united in marriage to Irene Litterer on June 10, 1950 at Giard, Iowa. To this union two sons were born. They moved to a farm north of New Hampton in 1953 and two years later they moved to a farm in Pleasant Grove Township in Floyd county. Irene and Stanley divorced in 1974 and Stanley continued to farm until 1978 when he moved to his house on Brasher Street in Nashua. Stanley worked for the Nashua CO-OP and with his brother Gordon fixing barns. In November of 1998, he sold his home and moved to his apartment on Main Street.

Stanley was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and tinkering in his shop.


Alice "Lucy" Crooks

Alice "Lucy" Crooks, 87, of Charles City, died on April 22, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral Services for Alice Crooks will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 27 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, with the Rev. Linda Myren officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, and at the church an hour prior to service.

Alice Lucille Crooks was born September 15, 1917, in her parent's home in Riceville, the daughter of Walter and Pearl (Emery) Marvin. She received her education in the Orchard area. She met and married Ivan Merle Crooks on February 3, 1938, at West Union. To this union three daughters were born. Leatha, Patricia, and Gloria. Ivan and Alice lived and farm all of their lives in and around the Nashua, Ionia, and Bassett areas. As Ivan's health failed they moved to Charles City. Alice worked a short time at a Charles City cabinet factory before taking a job as a housekeeper at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital where she worked for 16 years. She retired in 1983 to stay home and care for her husband. Ivan passed away in July of 1985, one day after his 75th birthday. In 1986, she started working as a Foster Grandparent, a job which she dearly loved. Over the next years she worked at all three of the Charles City elementary schools. She worked until this past December when her illness forced her to retire. She hated to miss work because "her kids counted on her to be there to help them." Alice's greatest joy was her family. She loved going to car races to watch her grandson race. She enjoyed word searches, cooking and gardening. She especially enjoyed fishing with Grandpa.

Living relatives include her three daughters, Leatha (Larry) Springer, Nashua, Patricia (Joseph) Hibben, Farmington, Minn., and Gloria (Lanny) Mincks, Charles City; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 14 step great-grandchildren; three sisters; and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister; two brothers; and one step-grandchild.

Louise Krueger

Louise Krueger, 91, of Charles City, died on April 23, 2005 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Funeral Services for Louise Krueger will be held 2:30 p.m., Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Reverend Paul Wilcox officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service.

Louise Katherine Schallock was born May 24, 1913, in rural Floyd County, the daughter of Herman and Katrina (Scheidecker) Schallock. She was educated in country school. On June 22, 1939, she was united in marriage to Donald Krueger on the family farm in Floyd County. Louise was a homemaker and also worked as an aide at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital for over 10 years. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, various church circles and served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 25 years. She was also a member of the Woman's Club, and the Birthday Club. She loved embroidery, working in the garden raising flowers, travel and cooking.

Survivors include one son, Paul (Patricia) Krueger, Charles City; nine grandchildren, Paula (Aaron) Hobert, Paul Krueger Jr., Penni (Rob) Parker, Patti (Jason) Eden, Peter (Mandy) Krueger, Deanna Nevy, Chad Krueger, Ryan Krueger, Kevin Krueger; 20 great grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Jeanine Krueger. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Dean; two brothers; and one sister.

Susie P. Cordes 94, of Elma, died on April 24, 2005, at the Colonial Manor Health Center, Elma.

Susie P. Brocka was born March 3, 1911, in Allison, Iowa, the daughter of William and Annie (Heerkers) Brocka. She attended rural school in Butler County. She was united in marriage to Ben Cordes on June 1, 1939, in rural Butler County. The couple spent their lives together farming in the area. Susie was a homemaker and also worked in many area flower shops and greenhouses. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Susie enjoyed flowers, crocheting, and especially milking cows and spending time on the farm.

Living family members include two sons, Ben (Bev) Cordes, Alta Vista, Chris (Shirley) Cordes, Lake View, Arizona; five daughters, Darlys (Robert) Roethler, Orchard, Marlys (Clifford) Kutzbach, Alta Vista, Betty Wendall, Charles City, Annabelle Dohlman, Allison, and Ida Mae (Ralph) Arenholz, Dumont; step-daughter Bea Lehmen, Cedar Falls; 35 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Meyers, Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Kenneth and William; one step-son, Robert; and four brothers.

Gerald "Hersh" Hershey

MARBLE ROCK - Gerald "Hersh" Hershey, 80, of rural Hazleton, passed away on Wednesday morning, April 27, 2005, at his home following a brief bout with cancer.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Trinity United Methodist Church, in Hazleton, with pastor Jerry Chase officiating.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, in Oelwein.
