Christopher Douglas Rabbitt

BATTLE CREEK, Michigan -- Christopher Douglas Rabbitt, 28, of Battle Creek, Mich., died suddenly at home on Feb. 16, 2005.

Funeral services were at First Wesleyan Church, Battle Creek, on Monday, February 21, 2005. Pastor Robert L. Zuhl officiated. Burial was in Hicks Cemetery, Battle Creek.Christopher was born on Dec. 16, 1976, to Douglas K. Rabbitt and Sheila Whitehurst Rabbitt, in Battle Creek. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek in 1995.

Chris enjoyed bowling, basketball, volleyball, playing video games, snowboarding, skate boarding, cooking, spending time with his family and friends, and he was also an accomplished magician.

He is survived by his mother, Sheila Rabbitt of Battle Creek; sister, Holly Rabbitt of East LeRoy, Mich.; his father and stepmother, Doug and Linda Rabbitt of Charles City; three stepsisters and one step-brother-in-law: Diane Mataragas of Oak Forest, Ill., Mary (John) Henderson of Aurora, Ill., Susan Mataragas of Oak Forest, Ill.; foster brother, Mickey (Pamela) Miller of Battle Creek; paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Patricia Rabbitt of Battle Creek and his step-grandmother, Mary Burroughs of Greene, Iowa. He is also survived by his fiancee, Teri Vasquez of Battle Creek; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends Amy Kalisz, Chuck Saulsberry and many other friends.

Farley-Estes and Dowdle Funeral Home in Battle Creek was in charge of arrangements.

Marion Castle

Marion Castle, 90, Charles City died on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral Services for Marion Castle will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Ruth Yeaton, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Charles City will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 10 until the time of services on Tuesday.

Marion Berniece Trimble was born April 27, 1914, in Leeds, Mo., the daughter of Arthur and Sarah Jane (Smith) Trimble. She was raised and educated in the Kansas City area and graduated from Westport High School in Kansas City, Mo. She was united in marriage to Vern Arthur Castle Sr. on November 4, 1929, in Mason City. She worked for the Glendale Adventist Hospital for 12 years. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, the Rockford Women's Club, and the Moose Lodge.

Living family members include her children, Vern A. (Bud) Castle Jr. and wife Jeanne, Waterloo, Fred E. Castle Sr., Charles City, Jane Ann Nealand and husband Edwin, Coeur dâ Alene, Idaho; eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband Vern in 1962; and daughter Belva Schiff in 1994.

Lori Jean Christensen

MARBLE ROCK -- Funeral services for Lori Jean Christensen, 41, of 1446 280th St., Marble Rock, will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Kenneth Kent officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First St.t, Greene, where there will be a public Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday one hour before services.Lori Jean Hinrichsen was born Jan. 8, 1964, at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a daughter of Mervin Lloyd and Alma Jean (Smith) Hinrichsen, and died Friday, February 25, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

She received her education at the Rudd Rockford and Marble Rock Public Schools graduating in 1982. During high school she sang in the choir and later in life developed a love for county music. Three of her favorite artists were George Strait, Steve Warner, and Reba. Other interests included reading paperback novels, writing poetry, and collecting Dolls by Precious Moments. She was confirmed as a member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock with special credit being given to Francis Swant, a member, who greatly impacted Loriâs life. In the late 1980s Lori started to develop a devastating illness known as Progressive Familial Atazia Demensia Syndrome. She was united in marriage to Russell Christensen in June 1990 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. Their union was blessed with the birth of one daughter. Lori's condition began to deteriorate and eventually left her unable to care for herself. Lori was admitted to the Salsbury Baptist Home where she remained until her death. During her stay a faithful friend, Fran Schmitt, took the time to brighten Lori's life by writing weekly letters of encouragement.

Lori will be sadly missed by her daughter, Rachel, and her father, Russell Christensen, both of Lake City; her parents, Mervin and Alma Jean (Smith) Hinrichsen of Marble Rock; her sister, Judy (Larry) Staudt of Marble Rock, and Dennis Hinrichsen of Mason City. She is also survived by four aunts: Opal Ackley of Marble Rock, Shirley Herman of Greene, Lyla Truex of Mason City, and Norma (Gene) Ewald of Marble Rock, and many cousins.

Patricia Ann Ortmayer

CEDAR RAPIDS - Patricia Ann Ortmayer, 73, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at St. Lukes Hospital. A Celebration of Life Service and Honoring Fifty Years of Marriage will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005. Time and location to be announced at a later date.

Patricia taught kindergarten in Montana and several towns in Iowa. She met her husband, William, while teaching in Charles City.Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Foundation or The American Kidney Foundation.

William "Bill" R. Hamm

William "Bill" R. Hamm, 80, of 219 18th St., Boone, formerly of Charles City died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Boone County Hospital in Boone.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday (March 4, 2005) at the Riverside Cemetery Chapel, 59 Riverside Ave., Charles City, with Pastor Solomon Odoom officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, in Charles City.

William Russell Hamm was born August 16, 1924, in rural Nashua, to William Anson and Florence (Goddard) Hamm. Bill as he was affectionately known by family and friends attended country school and graduated from the Charles City High School in 1943. In 1968 Bill moved to Boone. On December 12, 1970, Bill was united in marriage to Norma Joy Musser at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Bill was employed as a crane operator at Midstates Steel in Boone, retiring in 1990 after 24 years of service with the company. Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting with his dear friend Roy Ritter of Charles City. Bill and Norma liked to take drives through Ledges State Park located just South of Boone and watch the deer. Bill will be best remembered for "kidding around" with people and enjoyed making people laugh. Bill will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in his life are his wife, Norma J. Hamm; a sister-in-law, Marvell Hamm of San Francisco, Calif. and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Anson Hamm and Florence Hamm-Harris; his step-father, Allen Harris and one brother, David W. Hamm.

Ellen Genevieve Schrage

OSAGE - Ellen Genevieve Schrage, age 98, of Osage, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 7 , 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Osage. Visitation is from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m.


Dale Krieger

Dale Krieger, 78, of Charles City, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Dale Krieger will be held at 10:30 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Dale Theodore Krieger was born August 28, 1926, in Cresco, the second son of Charles and Pearl (Hyberger) Krieger. He and his family moved to Charles City in the late 1930's when his father accepted a position with the Iowa Highway Commission. He graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy in 1944 where he served as senior class president. From 1945 to 1946 Dale proudly served in the Unites States Army, being honorably discharged at the rank of Technical Sergeant First Class. Following his discharge he worked for a short time as a ticket agent with the Milwaukee Road. He then was employed by the Oliver/White Farm Cooperation where he was the foundry dispatcher, retiring in 1979. On August 13, 1949, he was united in marriage to Beverly Clapp at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. To this union two sons were born. Dale and Beverly celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary in 1974 with a memorable one week trip to the Hawaiian Islands. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Heritage Club, worked with the Foster Grandparent Program and volunteered for several years at Comprehensive Systems. Dale was an avid card and cribbage player, winning several area Cribbage Tournaments in the late 1970âs until he had to stop because of his health. He always looked forward to playing a round of cards with his card playing buddies nearly every morning. Dale also enjoyed going on Walleye fishing trips to northern Minnesota several times each summer, particularly at Lake Winnibigoshish and Mille Lacs Lake. He was also a solid billiards player and a true blooded Hawkeye basketball and football fan. Dale will be remembered as a loving, patient and good hearted husband, father and friend. He had a particular fondness for the family cat, Coco.

Living family members include his wife, Beverly of Charles City; two sons, Theodore "Ted" Krieger of Charles City and Scott Krieger of New Hampton; two brothers, Kenneth (Imelda) Krieger of Mason City and Eugene (Lorraine) Krieger of Charles City; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1949 and his father in 1991.

Don "Pat" Patrick Huber, age 64, of Clarksville, died at his home on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, of natural causes.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 7, at the Community United Methodist Church, Clarksville, with Rev. Ann Donat officiating.

Simon Rindels

 

ALLISON - Simon Rindels, 94, of Charles City died of natural causes Sunday, March 6, 2005, at the Allison Health Care Center, Allison.

Funeral service for Simon will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, in Allison, with Rev. Jeff Blank officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at the Allison Cemetery.

Simon was born August 24, 1910 in Wellsburg, Iowa, the son of Reiner and Dena (Frey) Rindels.

He attended rural country schools.

He was married to Lena VanHauen, to that union five children were born. The marriage ended in divorce. He later married Lula Williams in Cedar Falls

Marjorie L. Manning

Marjorie L. Manning, 82, of 33 N. Willowgreen Court, died Monday (March 7, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. James Magelssen officiating.

Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. The casket will be closed.

Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Marjorie was born December 17, 1922 in Webster City, the daughter of Marius and Karren Anderson. She received her education at Stanhope, Iowa then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Wartburg College in Waverly and graduated in Early Childhood Education from Drake University, Des Moines. She taught kindergarten in West Bend, Mason City, Charles City and second grade in Ames. Marjorie taught school for 35 years.

She retired in 1983 from Lincoln Elementary in Charles City.

Marjorie married Thomas E. "Gene" Manning June 8, 1947 in Stanhope. To this union a daughter, Cynthia, was born. The Manning's moved to Mason City in 1982. Marjorie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in Trinity Church Women and Trinity Church Choir for 17 years. She was a member of PEO Chapter IY and past board member of KCMR. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association and lifetime member of I.S.E.A.

Marjorie enjoyed traveling with her family in Mexico, Norway, Europe, Hawaii and the United States. She also enjoyed baking, golfing, biking and helping raise her grandson, Evan.

She is survived by her husband, Gene Manning; daughter, Cynthia Zach and husband James; grandson, Evan Zach all of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gladys Lawson.


Simon Rindels

ALLISON - Simon Rindels, 94, of Charles City died of natural causes Sunday, March 6, 2005, at the Allison Health Care Center, Allison.

During his career Simon farmed near the communities of Allison, Readlyn, and New Hampton. He later became a respected cattle buyer throughout the middle and western United States.

He enjoyed raising pigeons & doves of which he won many trophies for.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Rindels, of Charles City; daughter Shirley Goebel, Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter Myrna Taylor, Minn. sister Berdene Steer, Allison; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; numerous: nieces and nephews.

Simon was preceded in death by his parents; three sons (Wayne, Ray, and Vern), three brothers (Jake, Edie, John), one sister Martha Doeden.


Harold Shultz

Harold Shultz, 67, of 501 South Kentucky, Mason City, formerly of Greene, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenewith Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene, military honors will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Friday, March 11, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Saturday.

Verda Cowan

Verda Cowan, 89, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Verda Cowan will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home. The Reverend Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4- 8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue Saturday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Verda Irene Hennick Cowan was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Floyd, the daughter of Ora and Harriet (Huffman) Hennick. She attended school at Floyd. On July 6, 1932 she was united in marriage to Melvin Tibbitts at Charles City. Melvin died on Jan. 11, 1969. Verda married Samuel Cowan in November of 1973 at the Little Brown Church. Samuel died on January 18, 1994. Before her retirement she was employed at the Spic n Span Bakery, Meusel Hardware and Fareway. Verdaâs interests included traveling, dancing, gambling and attending Charles City Comet sporting events and the local men's softball games.

Living family members include two children, Roger (Dee) Tibbitts of Charles City and Linda (Tom) Maulsby of Clear Lake; 17 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; and three step children, Jerry (Liz) Cowan and Jan Cowan both of Kentucky and John Cowan of Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; four children, Merle Tibbitts, Bonnie Randall, Patricia Sickman and Merlyn Tibbitts; two grandchildren, Dennis Tibbitts and Diane Christie; a brother, Willard Hennick; and three sisters, Ethel Vance, Bessie Stewart and Leda Weiler.

LCDR Raymond Owens

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - LCDR Raymond Owens, USN (ret.), son of the late Raymond P. Owens and Kathleen Morgan, age 65 of San Antonio, died Monday, March 7, 2005.

Funeral services will be held March 11 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Owens was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School, Charles City, Iowa, and Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. He later retired from United States Navy after 30 years of service and had a second career as defense contractor with BDSystems. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #786, ACTS and CRHP Communities, Navy Crypologic Veterans Association, and the Parents Club of West Point and Annapolis.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Anne Owens; sons Michael P. Owens (Bridgitte) of Cedar Park, Texas, and LT Raymond P. Owens III, USN of Misawa, Japan; sisters Patricia Michalski, Kathleen Lawrence, Maurita Quady, and Susanna Glowacki; brothers John Owens and Ambrose Owens; three grandchildren: Shannon, Kevin and Stephen Owens; and special aunts and uncles, Charles and Mabel Owens, Marietta Johnson and Peggy Violante.

Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Kay Owens, and his brother, Charles Owens.

Harold E. Shultz

GREENE -- A Funeral Mass for Harold E. Shultz, 67, of 501 South Kentucky, Mason City, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene, with military rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268, American Legion of Greene.

Harold Edwin Shultz was born Jan. 24, 1938 in Greene, Butler County, the third of five children born to John and Ruth (Newbern) Shultz. He graduated from the Greene High School in 1956 and enlisted in the United States Navy, Sept. 6, 1956. He served with the Mobile Construction Battalion Seven. He was honorably discharged Aug. 4, 1960.

Harold was united in marriage to Annette Burgess at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on July 21, 1963. To this union two children were born, Kent Joel and Craig Steven. Like his father and brother Jack, Harold worked at the Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City until his accident in 1969. From that time on, Harold resided in nursing homes in Knoxville and Mason City, where he remained, until the time of his death. Although he was unable to live with his family at home, he taught us many lessons about courage and life, and throughout, never lost his sense of humor. Haroldâs greatest achievement in life was his loving presence in our lives as a friend, husband, father, and grandpa. He enjoyed hunting deer and pheasants and spending time with his family.

Harold is survived by his loving wife Annette, Mason City; his sons and their families Kent (Sarah) Shultz, and their children Kaitlyn, Nolan, Mollie and Isaac, of Osage; Craig (Kelly) Shultz, and their children Isabel, Amelia and Truman of Chicago, Ill.; Two sisters: Barb Tarr of Phoenix, Shari (Donald) Holtzee of Peoria, Ariz., one brother; Robert of Phoenix, Ariz. Harold is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Shultz) Schipp, of Waverly; nephews: Gene (Patty) Shultz of Cedar Falls, Dan (Dixie) Shultz of Ramsey , Minn., Jon (Diana) Holtzee of Chicago; nieces Paulette Shultz of Phoenix, and Jennifer (Dan) Draffkorn of Wadsworth, Ill., and many great nieces and nephews. Harold is also survived by one aunt, Muriel (Newbern) Whitten of Staunton, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jack Duane Shultz; and nephew, Robb Tarr.

Mary Frances Swinton

Mary Frances Swinton, 83, of Waverly, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, March 8, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly, with Rev. Mike Tauke presiding. E. Bernadine "Bernie" Monaghan

E. Bernadine "Bernie" Monaghan, age 81 of Charles City, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City with the Knights of Columbus as pallbearers.

Friends may call 3-8 p.m., Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Social Hall in Charles City where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 6 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton is in charge of arrangements.

Bernie was born July 24, 1923, in Aurora, KS, the daughter of Med and Blanche (Dandurand) Hebert. She graduated from St. Peters Grade School and the Aurora High School in 1942. Her family then moved to Iowa in 1944, where Bernie was employed at the J.C. Penny Department Store in Charles City.

On Jan. 2, 1946, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, she married F. Gordon Monaghan. To this union five children were born.

Bernie was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and Rosary Society since 1946, and a charter member of the St. Theresa Circle. She professed to the Lay Carmelite Order of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on Nov. 14, 1986. Bernie also belonged to a ladies bridge club for many years and made many lasting friendships. Her great cooking and warm hospitality to family and friends will be greatly missed.

Bernie is survived by her two daughters; Cheryl (Philip) Naumann of Coldwater, Ohio, Jan Monaghan (Brian McKeever) of San Francisco; three sons; Thomas (Donna Brooks) Monaghan of El Cajon, Cal., Gerard Monaghan (Suzanne Alegeria) of San Francisco and Tim Monaghan of San Francisco.

Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Four brothers; Armand Hebert of Eureka, Cal., Ferial "Fred" (Madelyn) Hebert of Delray Beach, Fla., Marvin (Gloria) Hebert of Maple Grove, Minn., James (Ellie) Hebert of Marion, Iowa; two sisters; Maxine Kollman of Iowa Falls, Clara Hebert of West St. Paul, MN; one aunt; Rosella Hebert of Concordia, Kan.

Two sister-in-laws; Mary Ann Hebert Baldwin of Charles City and Cleo Hebert of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gordon on May 16, 2003; a grandson; Jeffrey Naumann; two brothers; Edmer Hebert and J. Duane Hebert; a brother-in-law; Fred Kollman; one nephew; Daniel Hebert and a sister-in-law; Elvina Hebert.

John G. Popes

TRIPOLI -- John George Popes, 76, of Tripoli, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City following a lengthy illness. Visitation was Sunday, March 13, at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli. Funeral services were Monday, March 15, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli.

John was born Sept. 23, 1928, to George and Magdeline Osier Popes, in Charles City. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Roseville and also confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea.

John was married to Colleen Holtz and later divorced. A son, Dale, was born to this union.

John farmed, worked at the Oliver Company in Charles City, drove a pizza delivery truck for Ray's Pizza and also worked with the Tripoli and Readlyn Sanitation Department prior to retiring in 1991.

John was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli, Brandenburg-Krueger Post #4013, V.F.W. of Tripoli and Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. He enjoyed camping and watching NASCAR racing.

He is survived by his long-time companion, Angie Boeckman of Tripoli; four children: Junior (Marlene) Boeckman of Waverly, Judy (Daryl) Copp of Hawkeye, Jana (Steve) Hahn of Tripoli and Jackie (Mark) Smith of Burnsville, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Robert (Marlys) Popes of Plainfield and Raymond Popes of New Hampton; one sister, Shirley (Kenneth) Logan of Rochester, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dale; and one granddaughter, Felicia Popes.

Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli was in charge of arrangements.


Brian Franklin Mills

ELMA -- Brian Franklin Mills, 39, of Elma died at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, on Saturday, March 12, 2005.

Brian was born Nov. 21, 1965, in Chadron, Neb., to Dana and Susan Smith Mills.

Survivors are his step-mother, Barbara (Cookie) Dean; a brother, Kevin Mills, of New York City, N.Y.; Aunt Sheryl Drew of Parker, Ariz.; Great Uncle Franklin Mills of Hill City, S.D.; Great Aunt Betty Wilson of Falmouth, Mass.; and his many friends at Comprehensive Systems where he has lived and worked since 1982.

Brian was preceded in death by his father and mother; a brother, Zean Mills; and his grandparents.

Interrment will be in Hill City, South Dakota, at a later date.

Sara Youngerman, 52, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Colonial Manor in Elma.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Sara Youngerman will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Messiah Lutheran Church. The Reverend Allan Simms, pastor, will officiate. Sara Jean Youngerman was born Oct. 23, 1952, at Charles City, the daughter of Wilhelm and Helen (Leymaster) Youngerman. She graduated from the Charles City High School and in 1975 from Iowa State University with a degree in Family Environment. Sara worked at the Veteranâs Home in Marshalltown, Field Director for the North Iowa Girl Scout Council, was proprietor of the Country Mouse Ceramics, assistant teacher at Head Start and after Multiple Sclerosis made it impossible to work full time she worked part time at the Charles City Library and K-Mart. Sara was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School until her health made it impossible for her to continue. Her interests included doing handwork and teaching ceramic classes. Sara had a great interest in music. She played the cello and bass in high school and was active in both the orchestra and jazz band. A happy moment of her music career was being selected for All State.

Living family members include her mother, Helen Youngerman of Charles City; two sisters, Judith Brooks of Ames and Susan (James) Marth of Rockford; a brother, David (Karen) Youngerman of Charles City; and eight nieces and nephews, Kara Harder, Alys Miller, Steven Brooks, Alvin Marth, Billy Marth, Kathy Marth, Anne Youngerman and Jennifer Youngerman.

She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, William Youngerman.

Thelma Opal Carroll

HAMPTON -- Thelma Opal Carroll, 96, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2005, in West Union with the Rev. Paul Fraser officiating. Inurnment will be in the West Union Cemetery. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of arrangements.Thelma was born on Oct. 15, 1908, on the family farm in rural Fayette County. Her parents were Lindsay A. and Emma (Wegmiller) Grimes. After graduation from the West Union High School in 1927, she took the normal training course enabling her to teach rural school. After teaching rural school for several years, she continued her education at the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and also at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She then taught in Stanley, Cresco and Sumner for several years.

On Aug. 30, 1947, she married Ross R. Carroll at her Aunt Pauline Bradley's home in Duluth, Minn. The couple lived on an acreage outside of Sumner where Thelma devoted herself to homemaking and raising the couple's daughter.

In 1958, Thelma again attended college at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1960 and began teaching junior high English in the Charles City School system where she taught for 14 years, until her retirement in 1974.

In 1995, Thelma moved to Heritage Place in Hampton where she lived until moving to the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in December, 2004. She was grateful for the wonderful care she received from every member of the FGH staff.

Thelma was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Madonna White Shrine in Waterloo. Thelma enjoyed time spent with friends at the Hampton Senior Center playing cards, bingo and visiting. She loved spending time with her family. She spent several weeks each year with her sisters in West Union where they would enjoy days spent reminiscing, shopping and playing cards. She especially loved days spent traveling to Ankeny with her daughter to be with her granddaughter and great-granddaughter.

Living family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and John Byrne, Hampton; granddaughter and husband, Amanda and Joseph Reysack; and great-granddaughter, Amber Lauren Reysack, all of Ankeny; two sisters: Mary Brandt and Beverly Gruhn and a brother-in-law, C.J. Brandt, all of West Union.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ross; a brother, Glenn Grimes; and a sister, Lois Strohschein.


Francis Connor

Francis Connor, age 92, of Centerville, Iowa died Monday, March 14, 2005, at Centerville Nursing & Rehab Center in Centerville.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at 11 am at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa, with Rev. Dr. Beverly Leonard officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 18, 2005, from 4 till 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will be present from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday.He was born the son of Emmett and Dora (Wood) Connor on Aug. 2, 1912, in St. Louis, Mo. He graduated from Centerville Community Schools in 1930 and later attended the University of Iowa and received his Pharmacy License.

Francis married Georgia Hart on Jan. 2, 1936, in Centerville, Iowa. Francis opened his first "prescription shop" in Centerville in the late 1940's and called it Connor's Pharmacy. He would serve as a Pharmacist for over 50 years and retired in 1976. He served on the Appanoose County Country Club Board and was Past President. He was also a member of the Iowa Pharmacist Association, the Elk's Lodge in Centerville and was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Centerville. Francis was a very devoted husband for over 67 years. He loved his family, and a great game of golf or a day outside hunting.

Francis is survived by: his wife, Georgia Connor of Centerville, Iowa; son, Terry and his wife, Holly Connor, of Charles City, and daughter, Kim Connor-Kuhn and her husband, Tom Kuhn, of San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren, Kasey and Kate Connor of Omaha, Neb,. and Kelly Connor of Denver, Col.

He was preceded in death by: his parents and a brother, Robert Connor.

Lucille Davies, 89, of Charles City, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Lucille Redding Davies was born Dec. 28, 1915, near Marysville, the daughter of James and Daisy (Leiby) Redding. She graduated from the Lovila High School in 1934. In March of 1936 she was united in marriage to Oscar Davies in Des Moines. They lived in Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Bethany, Mo., and Fox Lake, Wisc. While in Fox Lake she was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. After her husband's death in February 1977 she moved to Charles City. Lucille volunteered as a guide at the Floyd County Museum, volunteered at Comprehensive Systems and worked for several years at the Treasure Chest where she was also the coordinator for volunteers.

Lucille was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Christian Ones, Senior Center, the Floyd County Historical Society and a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge where she was a Past Noble Grand. As a member of the Heritage Club she took advantage of their many opportunities for traveling. She also enjoyed crafts and gardening.

Living family members include daughter, Shirley (James W.) Clark of New Braunfels, Texas; two sons, James (June) Davies of New Hartford, and Richard (Nanci) Davies of Brandon, Wisc.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a step granddaughter; three step grandchildren; and six great great step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Lloyd Redding.

Glenn O. Davidson

PINE ISLAND, Minn. - Rev. Glenn O. Davidson, of Pine Island, Minn. and formerly of Charles City, has passed away.

Glenn grew up in Charles City. After completing military service with the U.S. Coast Guard, he graduated from Waldorf and Augsburg Colleges. A graduate of Luther Seminary, he was ordained at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He later served ten years in parish ministry in Wisconsin and as a pastoral counselor throughout Wisconsin for 20 years, retiring in 1995.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ruth; son, Nathan (Kirsten); daughter, Amy (Timothy) Koppa; grandchildren, Mackenzie, Zachary, Annika, Samantha and Emma; brothers, Alvin (Shirley), Allen (Sharon) and Lyle (Vera); sisters, Arlette Gauger, Marion Zierath; sister-in-law, Elaine Davidson; brother-in-law, Dean Schlick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, alfred and Nora; brothers, Oscar and Irving; sister, Geneva Schlick and brother-in-law, John Gauger.

Larry LeRoy Smith

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Larry LeRoy Smith, 65, of Chandler, Ariz., formerly of Charles City, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at home from a three year illness, Valley Fever and Cancer.

A Memorial Service was held February 22, 2005, at Prairie Fellowship Church in Gilbert, Ariz.

Larry graduated from Charles City High School in 1958, joined the U.S. Air Force (20 years) and retired in Chandler, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Sally, of Chandler; three daughters, Debbie, Kathy and Linda of Chandler; five grandchildren; two brothers, Dennis (Joan) of Charles City, Bill (Karla) of Council Bluffs; and one sister, Judy Smith of Des Moines.

Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents, LeRoy and Kathryn Smith of Charles City.


Emma McInroy

Emma McInroy, formerly of the Riceville, Osage area, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Emma was born Feb. 24, 1913, near Elma, the daughter of Hugo and Helen (DeVries) Horstman. She was united in marriage to Carl McInroy in August of 1932. In March of 1988, Emma married Charles Hoye.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. Visitation will be today, March 22, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Emma is survived by four sons, Keith (Gayle) McInroy of Charles City, Orville (Lisa) McInroy of Robbins, James (Marilyn) McInroy of Cedar Rapids and Jerry (Jane) McInroy of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Lillie Louvar of Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Carl (1983), Charles (2003); three sisters; and two brothers.

WATERLOO: Janeane Dralle McIntire, 45, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer.

She was born November 13, 1959, in Floyd County, daughter of Ronald and Darlene Wright Dralle. Janeane graduated from Greene High School in 1978 and also was a graduate of NIACC. She was a homemaker and enjoyed painting, sketching and fishing.Survivors include her parents, Ronald and Darlene Dralle of Clarksville; a son, Zachary McIntire of Waterloo; a daughter, Samantha McIntire of Waterloo; five nieces, Emily and Abbey Infante, Brittinae, Erika and Kristin Dralle; and a nephew, Lucas Dralle.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ruth and Ed Cunningham; paternal grandparents, Siegfred and Fannie Dralle, and an uncle, Larry Wright.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., today, Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial at 2 p.m. in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Nashua. Visitation was Monday, March 21, 2005, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and also for an hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

Carlyle 'Bud' Jung

Carlyle 'Bud' Jung, 85, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Carlyle Bud Louis Jung was born June 30, 1919, at Charles City, the son of Louis and Fay (Walker) Jung. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1937. Upon graduation Bud went to Linotype school in Charles City and then worked at the Aplington newspaper. On March 16, 1941, he was united in marriage to Eunice Dreyer at Greene. Bud then worked for the Oliver Corporation until he served in the United States Army from 1943 - 1946. Upon his return from active duty Bud worked at Salsbury Laboratories, raised turkeys and was a grounds keeper for the Charles City School District. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the American Legion. Bud enjoyed fishing, playing cards and visiting with friends.

Living family members include his wife, Eunice Jung of Charles City; a son, David Jung of Charles City; three grandchildren: Robert Jung, Crystal Boatwright and Carrie Reams; two nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Lloyd Jung; and a sister, Dorothy Gayther.

Dorothy Phillips Goecken was born July 1, 1909 in Charles City. The daughter of Robert Marias and Effie Mae (Childs) Ingersoll. Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Floyd County and the Charles City area. Dorothy attended country school and graduated from Floyd High School in 1927. Following high school she worked at a county farm in Okoboji, IA where she met her future husband Wilhelm. Dorothy furthered her education having attended the Iowa School of Nursing in Iowa City, earning her nursing certificate. Dorothy and her classmates were the first class to graduate in the new nursing program at that time. On February 9, 1937, Dorothy was united in marriage to Wilhelm Gerhardt Goecken at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Following their marriage the couple worked on several farms throughout Floyd County.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and took great pride in nurturing her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was faithful in celebrating all holidays with her family, making each one of them feel unconditionally and equally loved in her own unique way. Dorothy and her husband Wilhelm were always together and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was an avid gardener, and enjoyed flowers and passing the time by watching the birds. Dorothy was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City and was a devoted member of the St. Catherine's Church Circle and the rosary society. Some of her interests included genealogy and reading.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Dorothy's life are her children, Wilhelm "Bill" Goecken of Maryville, Mo.; James "Jim" (Connie) Goecken of Gentry, Mo.; Frances (Gerald "Jerry") Chatfield, Sr. of Floyd; Carol (Merlyn) Turner of Charles City and Chris (Michael) Dau of Dixon, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren; one sister, Immogene "Jean" Ingersoll of Phoenix, Ariz., and two brothers, Lewis Ingersoll and Archie Ingersoll, both of Charles City. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews and friends left to cherish her memory.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilhelm Goecken, on February 1, 1964; one sister, Georgianna Ross; and a brother, Maurice Ingersoll.

Robert Krumrey

Robert Krumrey, 62, of Charles City, died March 24, 2005, at his home after a gallant battle with lung cancer. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, in the chapel at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Neizwaag officiating. Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Born on July 30, 1942, in Charles City, Bob was the son of Lawrence and Annette Krumrey. He attended school at Floyd and Charles City. Bob married Kathryn Kraft and they enjoyed 43 years of marriage since being united on October 14, 1961. To this union two children were born, Troy and Dawn.

Bob worked for over 30 years at the Oliver Tractor Factory until it closed under White Farm in 1993. He then enjoyed driving the "big red dump truck" for Kamm Excavation until ill health prevented it. Bob was known for his creativity with wood and being able to fix almost anything. He was an active member of the Cedar Valley Engine Club and was instrumental in the moving and the setup of the school house and Corliss Steam Engine located on the club's grounds.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Krumrey of Charles City; two children: Troy (Kate) Krumrey of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., Dawn Davis of Iowa Falls; three grandchildren: Kayla, William and Mack; sister: Linda (Merlin) Litterer of Greene; three brother-in-laws: Harley Lovik of Dubuque, Gary (Wanda) Kraft of Rockford, Robert (JoAnn) Kraft of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Gloria Kraft of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Willis Smith; in-laws, George and Marion Kraft; and his sister, Barb Lovik.

Nova Gerhard

Nova Gerhard, 92, of Charles City, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Graveside services for Nova Gerhard will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. The Reverend David Werges, pastor at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Nova Mae Gerhard was born April 23, 1912, at Greene, the daughter of George and Elsie (Patske) Gerhard. She graduated from the Greene High School in 1920 and attended Iowa State Teachers College where she received her teacherâs certificate. During World War II she worked at the ammunition plant in Burlington and then moved to Charles City where she worked for 29 years at the Oliver Corporation. She was a member of AFLCIO. Reading was her passion and she always looked forward to going to the Charles City Public Library. Nova was also an avid Hawkeye fan.

Living family members include her daughter, Joan Gardner of Kalamazoo, Mich.; five grandchildren: Trish (Rick) Flanders, Jeff (Nancy) Gardner, Michael Gardner, Marilyn Gardner, Julie (Tim) Arch; three great grandchildren: Alecia Flanders, Penny Gardner, Max Arch; a great great granddaughter, Makaila Furderer; and one brother, Paul Gerhard, of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Frank, Dell, Lynn, Galen, Allen, and 'Pink' Gerhard; and two sisters, Neva and Adalis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Charles City Public Library.

V. Lucille Kolesar

NASHUA - V. Lucille Kolesar, 91, of Nashua passed away Wednesday evening, March 23, 2005, at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

Funeral services will 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, 312 1st Ave, Charles City with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery at Nashua. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church on Tuesday.

Lucille is survived by one brother, Merle (Jane) Crooks of Nashua; one sister, Doris Lubbert of Charles City;

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond G. Kolesar on October 30, 1977; her parents; four brothers, Donald Crooks and three in infancy; one sister, Marian Litterer and one nephew, Richard Litterer.

Violet Lucille Kolesar was born December 15, 1913 in rural Ladysmith, Wis., the daughter of Harry and Mae (Havig) Crooks. She moved to Nashua with her family in the early 1920's and graduated from Nashua High School in 1930. She met Raymond Kolesar while she was working as a practical nurse in Minnesota. They were united in marriage on June 21, 1952 at the United Methodist Church in Nashua. Lucille moved back to Nashua in 1982, where she lived until because of failing health she became a resident of Community Nursing Home in Clarksville on April 23, 2004.

Lucille was a homemaker and member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Wayne V. Feldman

GREENE -- Funeral services for Wayne V. Feldman, 75, of 305 South Main St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, Greene, with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene with military honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, where there will be a public Scripture Service and Time of Remembrance at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour before services.

Wayne Vinton Feldman was born Sept. 16, 1929 in rural Allison, a son of Fred and Marian (Trepp) Feldman, and died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

He received his education in the rural schools near Allison, and attended the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1948. Following high school he drove semi for Diamond Transport. He was inducted into the United States Army on Oct. 4, 1951, where he served with the Headquarter Battery Second Division Artillery during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge on July 16, 1953, he returned to Greene where he was employed by Wunsch Construction for ten years and later for Allied Construction for 33 years. Following his retirement in 1995, he drove for Siemons Trucking, Adelmund Trucking, and Beek Farms.

On Jan. 17, 1960, he was united in marriage to Gladys Mae Cook at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. They made their home in Greene where to this union was born two sons.

Wayne's interests included bowling, gardening and working around the house, playing cards, and watching sporting events. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee and elder of the church. He was a member of the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Living family members include his beloved wife: Gladys Feldman, Greene, two sons: Michael (Sherry) Feldman, Urbandale, Douglas (Kristi) Feldman, Greene, one granddaughter: Liberty Rose Feldman, Greene, one sister: Betty (Erwin) Oltmann, Cedar Falls; one brother: Donald (Virginia) Feldman, Greene, and a sister-in-law: Janice Feldman, Nashua. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Kenneth Feldman; and infant twin grandsons: Nile and Noah Feldman.

Paul Williams

Paul Williams, 75, of Charles City, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Funeral services for Paul Williams will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Paul Phillips of the Gospel Lighthouse will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until service time.

Paul Edward Williams was born Aug. 20, 1929, at Sentinel, Oklahoma, the son of Pross and Ruby (Lawley) Williams. He received his education at Sentinel. Paul proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. On Dec. 4, 1956, he was united in marriage to Mary Burns of Ft. Dodge at Tulsa, Okla. Paul farmed and worked as a general contractor. He moved to Charles City in August of 2004. Paul was also a minister of the Gospel for Southern Evangelist Associates. His hobbies included fishing and raising, breaking and riding horses.

Living family members include four children, Anna (Wayne) Clark of Kingston, Ariz., David Williams and his fianc/e Renee Ferch of Charles City, Paul Williams, Jr. of Sapulpa, Okla., and Donna (Bob) Johnston of Ft. Dodge; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two children, Shirley Trout and Larry Williams.
