Michel Gale Bass

Michel Gale Bass, age 56, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Clifford and Elaine Ohde Bass on July, 31, 1949, in Waterloo, Iowa. He Graduated from Columbus High School in 1967. Michel enlisted the U.S. Air Force in 1967 and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant before being honorable discharge in 1972. He continued his education and graduated from the Schoitz Radiology School in 1974. Michel Bass was united in marriage with T. Jean Meester on October 18, 1975, at the Reformed Church of Stout, in Stout, Iowa. They made their home in Waterloo for five years after marriage and then moved to their current home on a farm south of Parkersburg in 1981. Michel started work as an x-ray technician in 1974 at Schoitz Hospital in Waterloo. He continued his education in Nuclear Medicine, Cat Scan, Ultrasound, and MRI and worked in all those areas at Schoitz Hospital and Covenant Medical Center both in Waterloo. Michel was a member of the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg, where he was very active and served as a deacon, song director and choir member. Michel was a loving father and husband. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and attending his children activities. He enjoyed singing duets with his wife, Jean, listening to gospel music, and reading. Michel died peacefully surrounded by his family on August 24, 2005, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, after a long battle with ALS “Lou Gehrig’s disease”. He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Elaine Bass and his grandparents. Michel is survived by his wife, Jean Bass, Parkersburg, Iowa; one son, Peter Bass, Des Moines, Iowa; one daughter, Jessica Bass, Parkersburg, Iowa; three brothers, David (Ginny) Bass, Waterloo, Iowa, Anthony (Candie) Bass, Raymond, Iowa, and Jeffery (Karen) Bass, Waterloo, Iowa; two sisters, Linda Lowe, Stockton, California, and Barbara (Patrick) Reed, Waterloo, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2005, at the First Congregational Church with Pastor Ron Bartlett officiating. Pianist was Mary Ann Simon. Randy Aalderks sang “Hallelujah Square” and “The Lord’s Prayer”. Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art”, “I’ll Fly Away” and “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were Henry Trepp III, Orlyn Marks, Dennis Ihde, Jim Guhl, Ed Thomas and Gary Frank. Flower Committee was Jan Johnson and Nancy Schrage. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa with Full Military Rites by Parkersburg American Legion Post 285. Lila J. Brodbeck

Lila J. Brodbeck, 82, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away August 25, 2005 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. She was born April 22, 1923, in rural Allison, Iowa, to Harvey and Anna (Johnson) DeBower. Lila graduated from Allison High School in 1940. She was married on July 25, 1943, in Allison, Iowa, to Harold Brodbeck. Lila worked at the Dumont Care Center in Dumont as a CNA. She was a member of Dumont Reformed Church where she was active in RCW and was a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed reading, as well as cardinals and collecting cardinal items. Lila is survived by her daughter Sheril Brodbeck of Dumont, brother Ernest & wife Eileen DeBower of Waverly, sister Norma Bruns of Allison, sister Anna DeBower of Charles City, sister-in-law Caroline & husband Don Peters of Hampton. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Karen Kaye, brother Delbert and brother-in-law Jake Bruns. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, August 29, 2005 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accomp-anying soloist, Mrs. Norman Brown. Pallbearers were Mark Gerdes, Merlin Viet, Duane Wubbena, Mike Thornburgh, Jr., Norman Burkett, and Clifford Winkowitsch. Final resting place was in the Dumont, Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Laverne Marvin Brocka

Laverne Marvin Brocka was born December 17, 1923 at his home in Vilmar, Butler Co., a son of Otto George and Mary Henrietta (Endelman) Brocka and died Monday, August 8, 2005 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. He received his education in the Coldwater Country School. He was baptized on February 26, 1924, and confirmed on April 2, 1939 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vilmar. He was united in marriage to Ruth Eileen Reiher on January 1, 1947. To this union were blessed seven children. Laverne was a farmer all of his life. Being a farmer, Laverne had a natural love for the outdoors. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing. In contrast to the peaceful quiet of a river bank he was a faithful parade watcher and Butler County Fair attendee. Laverne took great interest in his children’s and grandchildren’s athletic events attending their ballgames whenever possible. Living family members include his loving wife Ruth, his children: Diane (Richard) Kleinschmidt of Plainfield, Rita (Bill) Wood of Waverly, Margene (Bill) Van Horn of Pella, Vernette (Don) Salge of Allison, Thea (Stanley) Wubbena of Monona, Gary (Tammy) Brocka of Dumont, Doyle (Ann) Brocka of Allison. Eighteen grandchildren: Lisa (Larry) Borglum, Rick (Kristi) Kleinschmidt, Nathan Wood, Heather (Tim) Weiss, Holly (Nathan) Christoffels, Heidi (Eric) Ortegren, Zachary Van Horn, Hillary Van Horn, Matthew Salge, Melanie Salge, Whitney Wubbena, Nicole Wubbena, Stephanie Brocka, Lisa Slocum, Michelle Roose, Clint Brocka, Luke Brocka, Erin Brocka. Twelve great grandchildren: Amanda, Megan, Nicholas Borglum, M.J., Alex, Erica Hulsing, Macy and Owen Weiss, Kennedy Christoffels, Chase Slocum, Megan and Justine Roose. Three sisters; Gladys Mae Hinders of Allison, Esther June (Paul) Schmidt of Allison, Marvel Jane (Galen) Landers of Greene. Laverne was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Mary Brocka, six brothers Ernest C.E. Brocka in infancy, Harry Nickolas Brocka, Floyd Virgil Brocka, Alvin Marion Brocka, Alfred Otto Brocka, Melvin Merlyn Brocka, and one sister Susan Florence Bruns. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Laverne Marvin Brocka Memorial Fund in care of the family. Funeral services were held at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. on August 12, 2005 with Pastor Keith Tomlinson officiating. Special music was provided by Jack Reid singing “How Great Thou Art” and congregational singing “Amazing Grace” and “What a Friend We Have In Jesus” accompanied by organist Barb Wagner. Casket bearers were Rick Kleinschmidt, Matthew Salge, Nathan Wood, Clint Brocka, Zach Van Horn and Luke Brocka. Honorary casketbearers were Lisa Borglum, Heidi Ortegren, Whitney Wubbena, Stephanie Brocka, Heather Weiss, Hillary Van Horn, Nicole Wubbena, Michelle Roose, Holly Christoffels, Melanie Salge, Erin Brocka and Lisa Slocum. Interment was in the Allison Cemetery with Reids Funeral Home in Greene in charge of arrangements.


Anita R. McKinley

Anita R. McKinley, 98, of Menomonie, Wisconsin, formerly of Allison, Iowa, passed away August 22, 2005, at the American Lutheran Home, in Menomonie, Wisconsin. She was born April 6, 1907, rural Raymond, Minnesota, to John & Sabina (Bruss) Doesken. Anita graduated from Raymond High School in Raymond, Minnesota, then attended Mankato College and received her teaching certificate. She taught elementary school in Allison. Anita married Neal McKinley on December 20, 1941, in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where she was an active member. Anita enjoyed golfing and wintering in Arizona. She is survived by her son Gary & wife Gloria McKinley of Edina, Minnesota, daughter Rita & husband Howard Slinden of Menomonie, Wisconsin, brother Melvin & wife Dee Doesken of Deerfield Beach, Florida; grandchildren: Dr. Kristin & husband Dr. Ron Patrick, Gregory & wife Sue McKinley, Diane & husband David Schofield, Mark Slinden; great grandchild Peter McKinley. Anita was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Rev. Orville & Wilfird and a sister Mildred Sepple. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 26, 2005 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa with Pastor Ruth Ann Shriver officiating. Special music was provided by flutist Linda Thoreson and soloist Shirley Wubbena accompanied by Mrs. Cecil Radcliffe. Pallbearers were David Harms, Scot Henrichs, Dale Johnson, Rod Wangsness, Beryl Wubbena and Dana Uhlenhopp. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Hines

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Hines, 73, of New Hartford, Iowa, died on Monday evening, August 29, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota. Betty was born on November 21, 1931 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Deck Johnson. She attended school in Arlington, Iowa. On September, 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Donald Ray Hines in Maynard, Iowa. They made their home in several communities, including, rural Marion, rural Fairbank, and Waterloo, Iowa, before moving to New Hartford, Iowa in 1973. Betty cooked at Blacks Tea Room and Allen Hospital, where she was promoted to Kitchen manager in 1967. In 1973, they purchased the Home Café in New Hartford and the sold it 1977. She then became an Avon Representative, where she reached the president’s club numerous times. Betty and Ray sold many of their hand crafted items at numerous sales for many years. She loved country music, going to Branson, and Nascar Racing. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, having coffee with friends, attending craft sales and also attending numerous plays. She is survived by her husband, Donald; two sons and their wives, Jim and Patty Hines of rural Waterloo, Iowa; Don and Linda Hines of New Hartford; one daughter and her husband, Betty Jo and Keith Ferch of Charles City, Iowa; three grandsons, Todd (Michelle) Hines of Center Point, Iowa; DeWayne (Laura) Ferch of Forest City, Iowa; Zack (Sherry) Hines, of New Hartford, Iowa; two granddaughters, Dawn Hines of Waterloo, Iowa and Angela Ferch of Charles City, Iowa; twelve great grandchildren, Mitch, Justin, Kirstyn, & Kasey Hines; Allyssa, Brandon, Kelsy & Madison Ferch; Danyelle Ferch; Monica & Brianna Hines; and Haley Hines. Several nieces and nephews, one sister in law, Darlene Harbaugh of Strawberry Point, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, a step brother, Russell Brown and a son Tony. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 2, 2005 at 10:00 am at the United Methodist Church in New Hartford, Iowa. Burial will in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in New Hartford. Memorials may be directed to the family. Helen LaForest

Helen LaForest, age 92, of Parkersburg and formerly of Lincoln Park, Michigan, was born January 9, 1913, the daughter of Thomas and Hattie Hamme Tackaberry in Bay City, Michigan. Helen was united in marriage with Arthur Herman Lipkea in May of 1931, in California. They lived in Detroit, Michigan and Arthur died in 1942. In 1947, Helen went back to school to complete her high school and then attended secretarial school. She was employed as a secretary for Wyandotte Chemical Company. Helen married Arthur Joseph LaForest November 26, 1953, in Elkhart, Indiana. Helen was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was active in the ladies circle and the choir. She was a member of two quilting societies in Michigan. She had a talent for china painting, sewing and crocheting. Helen died Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Lipkea in 1942; her second husband, Arthur LaForest in 1995; her parents; three brothers, Fredrick in infancy, and Harry and Lawrence “Bill” Tackaberry; and three sisters, Marie, Grace and Marian Tackaberry who all died in childhood. She is survived by two sons, William (Pat) Lipkea, New Hartford, Iowa and Thomas (Janet) Lipkea, Byron Center, Michigan; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Hilda Tackaberry, St. Clair, Michigan; and a cousin, Marg Cools, St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Funeral Services were at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 3, 2005, at the Faith Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa. Officiating was Rev. Daniel Larson, the organist was Bernita Nicklaus, the Congregational Hymns were “Behold A Host Arrayed in White,” “Blessed Be the Tie That Binds” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.” The Casketbearers were Brad Muller, Greg Muller, Zach Muller, Jeff Muller, Randy Muller and Al Nielsen. A Committal Service and Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 8, 2005, at the Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery in Flat Rock, Wayne County, Michigan. Chris Ridder, Jr.

Chris Ridder, Jr., age 86 of Aplington, Iowa, was born August 25, 1919, the son of Christ and Jenna Conrads Ridder south of Aplington in Grundy County, Iowa. He received his education in a rural school near his home. Chris was united in marriage with Mildred Miller on December 27, 1940 in the parsonage of the First Reformed Church of Aplington. The couple farmed near Buck Grove and in 1952, moved to a farm northwest of Parkersburg. They retired from farming in November, 1982 and moved to Aplington. Chris was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington. He enjoyed being outdoors in nature and going fishing in Minnesota with his family. He very much loved the time spent with his grandchildren. Chris died Sunday, August 28, 2005, at the Allen Memorial Hospital ER in Waterloo, Iowa of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Tina Ridder, Fannie Walters, Ella Dreesman, Jennie Boelman; three brothers, Henry, Philip and Herman Ridder and one sister in infancy. He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Mildred Ridder; one son, Jim (Esther “Cookie”) Ridder, Aplington, Iowa and one daughter Jackie Limburg, Marshalltown, Iowa; three grandchildren, Robyn Lyn (Don) Ubben, Hemet, California; Jim J. (Jennifer) Ridder, Aplington, Iowa and Jeff (Amanda) Ridder, Aplington, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Nick and Kevy Ubben and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at the First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Randy Aalderks sang “Holy Ground” and “Until Then”. Congregational Hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Rock of Ages”. Casketbearers were James Miller, Rick Miller, Paul Stubbe, Paul Jungling, Jim J. Ridder and Jeff R. Ridder. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Ruth Lindaman

Ruth Lindaman, age 81, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Martin and Dora (Olhtoff) Boomgarden on January 1, 1924, on a farm near Bristow, Iowa. On January 1st, 1947, on her 23rd birthday Ruth was united in marriage to Andrew Lindaman at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. Andrew and Ruth moved to their farm north of Austinville, Iowa, which they farmed together until retirement. Ruth loved the farm life, especially driving tractors and helping her husband in any way she could. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother and she very much enjoyed the times she took care of them when they were little. On April 27th, 1954, Ruth accepted her savior thru Isaiah 53:6. In 1975 they moved to their new home and Ruth and Andrew continued to farm until 1987. Ruth made many friends in Parkersburg. She enjoyed shopping, playing cards and going to exercise class. In April 2003 Ruth became a resident at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa. Ruth passed away Saturday, September 03, 2005, at Maple Manor Village, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Dora Olhtoff Boomgarden, Sr.; her three brothers, Pete, Rueben and Martin, whom she loved dearly. Ruth is survived by her husband of 58 years, Andrew Lindaman of Parkersburg, Iowa; one daughter, Brenda, Mrs. Steve Harms, Aplington, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Nicole and Kyle Harms. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at the Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, Iowa with Mr. Russell Nesbit and Mr. Robert Orr officiating. Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “It Is Well With My Soul.” Casketbearers were Bob Boomgarden, Dave Boomgarden, Steve Boomgarden, Kyle Harms, Mike Pinta and Kirk McLaren. Flower Committee was Dorothy McLaren and Marilyn Pinta. Internment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Gordon W. Konig

Gordon W. Konig, 58, of Allison, Iowa, passed away September 12, 2005 at his home in Allison. Gordon was born January 14, 1947, in Hampton, Iowa to Charles and Verna (Mote) Konig. He was baptized on February 19, 1947 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. He graduated from Berry High School in Birmingham, Alabama. He was married to Patricia Jeffery on April 9, 1979, in Ringgold, Georgia. Gordon worked as a truck driver for Roadway Express for over 30 years. He was a member of the Teamster Local 371 in Rock Island, Illinois. Gordon enjoyed working crossword puzzles, watching the Braves play ball, collecting coins, doing stone work and working outside. He is survived by his wife Patricia Konig of Allison, daughter Natalie & husband Scott Gerrick of Slidell, Louisiana, daughter Gretchen & husband Joe Hagan of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, son Charles Frederich Konig of Waverly, daughter Gretyl Konig of Hampton, mother Verna M. Konig of Allison, sister Brenda & husband Denny Miller of Allison, sister Linda & husband Bill Bunger of Indianola, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Charles, Uncle Vern Konig, Aunt Sylvia Smit, Uncle Joe Mote, Aunt Elizabeth Strozier, and an Aunt Cordell Mote. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 15, 2005 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jeffrey A. Blank officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Vivian Green accompanying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Charles Konig, Eric Miller, Scott Gerrick, Joe Hagan, Michael Miller and Nick Miller. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Mary Jean (Frey) Allen

Mary Jean (Frey) Allen, 47, of Allison, Iowa, died Sunday morning, September 11, 2005, at her home in Allison from complications of MS. Mary was born on October 4, 1957, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Eugene and Mary Ellen (Beckmann) Frey. Mary attended school in Cedar Falls, graduating from the Cedar Falls High School in 1976. Mary lived in Ames, Des Moines, and Waterloo, where she worked as a waitress, for Younkers in fashion and retail, and in the collection department for John Deere. She was united in marriage to Fred Allen and the couple later divorced. Mary is survived by her two sisters, Laura Frey of Mount Pleasant, Michigan and Carol (Chuck) Grooms of New Hartford; two nephews, Chris Grooms of Cedar Falls, Brian Grooms of New Hartford, one niece, Stephanie Grooms of New Hartford; and four aunts, LaVonne (Kenneth) Vance of Clarksville, Judy (Jim) Lindaman of Aplington, Linda Bayliss of North Liberty, and Sally (Roger) Leuthold of Urbandale. Mary is also survived by the support of many loving friends and home health care providers; including Cedar Valley Hospice. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother Richard Frey in infancy. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with Rev. Mike Tauke presiding. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, where there will be a public scripture service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family and a memorial fund direction will be established at a later date. Anna Marie Hogenkamp

Anna Marie Hogenkamp, 86, of Shell Rock and formerly of New Hartford, died early Monday morning, September 12, 2005 at the Shell Rock Health Care Center. Anna was born on August 12, 1919 in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Andrew and Carrie Myrtle (Teagarden) Hogenkamp. The family made their home in Colorado until moving to Parkersburg in 1929. Anna attended school at New Albion Country School. Following school, Anna helped on the family farm. In 1954, the family moved to New Hartford. Anna continued to live on the family farm until moving to the Shell Rock Health Care Center in 2001. Anna was a member of the Parkersburg Eastern Star and the New Hartford United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, oil painting, drawing, fishing, entertaining and especially spending time with her family and pets. Anna will be remembered by her family for her lively attitude and her enjoyment of life. Anna is survived by her two brothers, Andy Hogenkamp and his wife Marlys of Shell Rock and Fred Hogenkamp and his wife Esther of Cedar Falls, and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John Hogenkamp and Charles Hogenkamp in infancy; one sister-in-law, Nellie Hogenkamp; and by one nephew, Derek Bellman. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at The Meadows Assisted Living Chapel in Shell Rock with Pastor Nathan N. Frazee officiating. Burial will be held at Oakhill Cemetery in Parkersburg. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Shell Rock. Memorials may be directed to Bremer-Butler Hospice or to the Shell.

Mabel Lindeman

Mabel Lindeman, age 89, of Ackley Presbyterian Village, formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was born July 19, 1916, the daughter of Jerry and Maria DeVries Lindeman, in Grundy County, rural Aplington. She graduated from Aplington High School in 1935. Mabel made her home in the Aplington area after high school. She worked at various surrounding businesses including: the grocery store, hardware store, cooked at Maple Manor Nursing Home, Highview Animal Hospital all in Aplington; the drug store in Parkersburg; and Ackley State Bank. Mabel retired in 1987. She became a resident of the Ackley Presbyterian Village on January 17, 1997. Mabel was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church where in the past she taught Sunday School and was in the women’s Benevolent Society. Mabel enjoyed baking, especially zwieback for friends and family, and gardening. Her family and friends always enjoyed her sense of humor. Mabel died Wednesday, September 14, 2005, at the Ackley Presbyterian Village from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Henry, William, Dick and John Lindeman, and one sister, Hattie Lindeman. Mabel is survived by one brother, Bernie Lindeman of Aplington, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and also great-great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2005 at the Aplington Baptist Church in Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Dan Smith officiating. Organist was Cami Haugstad. Congregational Hymns were “Tell Me the Old Story”, “He Giveth More Grace”, “Day By Day” and “God Leads Me Along”. Casketbearers were Dennis Lindeman, Larry Lindeman, Wenlyn Lindeman, Dale Janssen, Alvin Jungling, and Matthew Lindeman. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Merlyn Leon Gulick

Merlyn Leon Gulick, 57 of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 16, 2005 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo after a brave and valiant 25 year battle with cancer. Merlyn was born on May 11, 1948, the son of Robert and Thelma (Sparks) Gulick in Waterloo, Iowa. He was baptized on September 29, 1957 at the Walnut Street Baptist Church, Waterloo, and attended kindergarten thru the 4th grade in Waterloo. In 1958, the family moved to the Horton area. Merlyn attended the Plainfield Community School from the 5th grade thru 12th in Plainfield, graduating in 1967. After graduation from high school, he worked for various construction companies including Gipple Construction, where he learned many aspects of the trade. On October 25, 1969, he was united in marriage to Donna May Oberhelman at the United Methodist Church in Plainfield. Merlyn held various jobs, including Rath Packing Company until he formed his own construction company, Gulick Construction. In later years, he added a furniture refinishing shop in Shell Rock. He loved his work and took great pride in doing it the only way he knew how: The right way! The best way! Merlyn retired from construction work in November of 1998 due to health reasons. After retirement, he became a certified Lay Speaker, he took continuing Education courses in Biblical studies and became an ordained minister. He was a member of Hope Community Church. Merlyn loved to fish, taking care of his lawn and spending time with family and friends. His grandson, Matthew was his pride and joy. However, his greatest passion was extensively studying and researching the bible. Survivors include his wife, Donna of Waverly; son, Ryan and his wife, Jessica Gulick of Waverly; grandson, Matthew Layne; and sister, Susan Kay Gulick of Waverly. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a grandson, Carter Wyatt Gulick. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at 10:30 am at Hope Community Church in Bremer, Iowa with Pastor Nathan N. Frazee officiating. Burial will be in the Horton Cemetery in Horton, Iowa. Friends may call with the family present from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. James E. Conger

James E. Conger, 77, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away September 16, 2005, at the Dumont Wellness Center in Dumont, Iowa. Jim was born March 31, 1928, in Bristow, to George and Marie (Rosenthal) Conger. Jim graduated in 1947 from Bristow High School. He served his country during the Korean war in the United States Army. He was married to Phyllis Hartgraves on October 26, 1952, in Dumont. He ran his own tire shop and gas station in Bristow. He was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. Jim was a member of the Bristow AmVets and Dumont American Legion. He was also a past member of the Dumont Lion’s Club. Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, as well as going to flea markets. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Conger of Dumont; daughter Susan & husband Steve Meinders of Kearney, Missouri; daughter Shelly & husband John Zimmerman of Aredale; brother Arthur Stanton & wife Betty Conger of Silver Springs, Florida; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 19, 2005 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying soloist, Mrs. Norman Brown. Ushers were Mike Hanson and Danny Shear. Pallbearers were Scott Yung, Kevin Yung, Mark Christy, Robert Conger, Ken Meier and Doug Oitzman. Honorary pallbearers were Jared Meinders, Alex Meinders, Julia Zimmerman and Jeff Zimmerman. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Dorothy J. Gibson, 82, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 22, 2005, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, with Pastor Loren Stoneberg officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2005, at the Funeral Chapel. Dorothy Jane Stewart was born February 2, 1923, in rural Bennezette Township, Near Aredale, a daughter of George Wilder and Vera Louisa (Knoll) Stewart, and died Monday, September 19, 2005 at her home in Greene. She received her education in the rural Butler County Schools and graduated from the Bristow High School in 1940. She was united in marriage to Marion Ray Gibson on September 8, 1940 at the E.U.B. Parsonage in Bristow. They started farming for Raymond Barnett near Aredale and later moved to Laporte City where they remained until 1944, when they returned to rural Butler County to work for area farmers. In the late 1940s they started farming on their own in the Greene area. Dorothy and her family regularly attended the Bennezette Wesleyan Church. Following Marion’s death on January 26, 1967, she continued to farm until she moved into town in 1984. Dorothy drove a school bus for the Greene Community School District for 23 years retiring in 1991. Her interests included playing the keyboard and singing. For many years Dorothy and Jean Wilken provided entertainment at area nursing homes and for many birthday parties. Her other interests included cross stitching sewing, and quilting. She enjoyed having coffee with her friends at the coffee shop. Her family was very important to her, especially the true delight of her life, her youngest granddaughter, Addie. Living family members include her daughters: Pat (Bob) Junker of Meservey, Lynda (Mel) Primmer of New Hartford, Son-in-Law: Charles Reams of Marble Rock, daughter-in-law: Becky Neal of Nashua; a son: Gary (Lou Ann) Gibson of Greene, nine grandchildren: Toni (Gregg) Fliss, Jeff Junker, James Fiddick, Julie (Frank) Nook, Terry (Jessica) Reams, Tracy (Mark) Tomlinson, Andrew (Angie) Gibson, Adam (Michelle) Gibson, Adeline Gibson; seven step-granchildren, ten great grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, and one step great great grandchild; one sister: Betty Card of Hampton, a sister-in-law Eva Stewart of Greene. She was preceded in death by her husband, Son David (1976), Daughter Nancy Reams (2004), three grandchildren: Tina Reams (1964), Jason Fiddick (1973), Wayne Junker (1991), one sister: Darlene Stewart in infancy, three brothers: George, Orville, and Glenn Stewart. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Dorothy Gibson Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Diletta Buseman, age 65, of Aplington, Iowa, died Monday, September 19, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from complications of cancer Memorial Services 1:30 p.m., Thursday, September 22, 2005 at Bethel Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with inurnment in Bethel Reformed Cemetery. There will be a family gathering to greet friends and accept condolences from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Bethel Reformed Church.
