Earl Leon Eisentrager

Earl Leon Eisentrager, 83, of Hampton, Iowa passed away December 26, 2003 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa. He was born on March 14, 1920 in rural Dumont, Iowa to Frank and Lela (Truax) Eisentrager. Earl graduated from rural Dumont Schools. He served his country in US Army from 1942-1946 in the Western Pacific as a Teletype Operator. Earl was married to Mildred Rewerts on December 10, 1941 in rural Ackley. He farmed in Dumont and rural Aplington until 1961 when they moved to a farm west of Chapin. He farmed there until moving to a farm northwest of Hampton in 1973. Earl was a member of the United Methodist Church in Chapin. He is survived by his wife Mildred Eisentrager of Ackley; four sons: Dean Eisentrager of Hampton, Gene and wife Julie Eisentrager of Hampton, Duane and wife Susan Eisentrager of Hampton and Galen and wife Marlene Eisentrager of Sheffield; five sisters: Lucille and husband Leroy Cassmann of Hampton, Dorothy Bruns of Dumont, Phyllis and husband Harold Harms of Bristow, Beverly and husband Henry Folkens of New Hartford and Sharon and husband Nathan Eilers of Hampton; two brothers: Dale and wife MaryAnn Eisentrager of Bristow and Richard and wife Esther Eisentrager of Dumont; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one step brother. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Sheffield, Iowa with Rev. R. Karl Watkins officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Ruth Skeries accom-panying the congregational singing. The flower committee was Joyce Brouwer and Letha Allen. Military services were provided by Hampton Veterans Memorial Association. Pallbearers were Jody Eisentrager, Tony Eisentrager, Karl Eisentrager, Mindy Eisentrager, Michael Eisentrager, Joy Eisentrager, Jeffery Eisentrager and Justin Eisentrager. Final resting place was in the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield, Iowa. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Ervin L. Diekman

Ervin L. Diekman, age 81, of Aplington, Iowa, was born August 31, 1922, the son of George and Anna Wiegman Diekman near Kesley in Butler County, Iowa. He graduated from Aplington High School and attended Luther College for two years until he joined the U.S. Army on March 4, 1943. Ervin served in Europe during WW II with an Army Field Hospital. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army on November 5, 1945. Ervin was united in marriage with LaVon Uhlenhopp on March 28, 1943, in Junction City, Kansas while he was serving in the Army. Following his discharge from the Army, the couple made their home in Aplington where Ervin joined his father in the family grocery business. He became full partner with his brother, Wayne in the Diekman Brothers Grocery Store. He retired from the business in 1977. Ervin was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. He served on the Aplington City Council and was a long time volunteer fireman for the Aplington Fire Department. He was a lifetime member of Aplington Amvets Post #102. Ervin was an avid sports fan. He had played baseball and football in high school and college. When his eyesight failed him, he loved to listen to sporting events on the radio. Ervin died Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Elmer Diekman. Ervin is survived by his wife of 60 years, LaVon Diekman of Aplington, Iowa; one daughter, Sharon (Marvin) Lindaman, Cedar Falls, Iowa; one son, Terrill (Denice) Diekman, Elgin, Iowa; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne (Janice) Diekman, Aplington, Iowa; and one sister, Lorene Vietor, Parkersburg, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church with burial the Pleasant View Cemetery both in Aplington. Officiating was Rev. Greg Smith. Organist was Lenee Pollock. Congregational Hymns were “In The Garden,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” Casketbearers were members of Aplington Amvet Post #102. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa with Military Rites by Aplington Amvets Post #102. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials maybe directed to the family of Ervin Diekman.


Evelyn E. DeBower

Evelyn E. DeBower, 79, of Allison, Iowa passed away December 23, 2003 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly, Iowa. She was bom on January 20, 1924 in Clara City, Minnesota to August and Grace Klenke. Evelyn attended rural Clara City Schools in Clara City, Minnesota. She was married to Louis Deflower on January 29, 1949 in Waveriy, Iowa. She worked as a home maker. Evelyn was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa, She was a member of the W-ELCA and had served as secretary of the Mission of Growth and Mission of Action committees. She taught Sunday School for many years. She was an active member of the AMVET Auxiliary in ClarksviUe, Iowa. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and baking. She was a member of her neighborhood Friendship Club. She is survived by her sou Larry and wife Sue Ann DeBower of Los Altos, California, son Gary and wife J uJie DeBower of Charles City, brother Clarence and wife Mary Klenke of Clara City, Minnesota, sister Erma and husband Bud DeGrole of Clara City, Minnesota and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Services were held Saturday, December 27, 2003 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. LaDonna Jean Viet

LaDonna Jean Viet, 69, of Hampton, Iowa passed away December 22, 2003 at the Belrnond Medical Center in Belmond, Iowa. She was bom on August 30, 1934 in Franklin County, Iowa to Raymond and Vera (Wells) Froning. She attended Hampton High School and received her GED trom NIACC. She was married to Galen Viet on June 1, 1952 in Hampton, Iowa. She worked at Franklin General Hospital as a supervisor. She was a member of the Neighborhood Bible Church in Hampton, Iowa. LaDonna enjoyed going to rummage sales, fishing, working, and decorating. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and also her dog Mitzi. She also enjoyed spending the summer in Clear Lake at their cabin. She is survived by her husband Galen Viet of Hampton, son Dennis R. and wife Linda Viet of Hampton, son Randy L. and wife Holly Viet of Hampton, daughter Crystal (Kristie) K. and husband Jeff Meints of Sheffield, daughter Debra J. and husband Tony Plagge of Hampton, sister Margaret Huseman of North Highlands, Califomia, sister Shirley and husband Verlon Siems of Hampton, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. Services were held Saturday, December 27, 2003 With Rev. Richard Parker and Rev. Art Zewert officiating. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery. Arrangements by Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Homes.


Harold E. Poppen

Harold E. Poppen, 86, of Allison, Iowa passed away December 27, 2003 at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa. Harold Poppen was the youngest of seven children, he was born August 7, 1917 to Albert Poppen and Kate (Harms) Poppen on their farm in rural Allison. Harold graduated from the Allison High School in 1934 and went to work in the Allison Hardware Store for his sister and brother in law, Mr. & Mrs. John Folkers. He continued working there into his 80’s. June 25, 1939 Harold married Maxine Codner at the St. James Lutheran Church before the service. Three children were born to this union: Carl James Poppen, Jane Ruth and Lee Poppen. He was a longtime owner and operator of the Allison Hardware in Allison, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. James Lutheran Church. He taught Sunday School for many years, and was on the building committee for the new church. He was a long time volunteer grounds keeper for the Allison Municipal Airport, he was active with boy scouts board for several years after Lee was an Eagle Scout and no longer lived in Allison. Harold was a faithful Choir member, played in the band, was a Charter member of the Allison Veterans Drill Team. He is survived by wife Maxine Poppen of Allison, daughter Jane & husband Richard Arnold of Amelia Island Florida, son Lee & wife Charlotta Poppen of Springfield, Missouri. Grandson Clint & Crystal Cordes of Allison, Grandson Clay Cordes of Allison, Grandson Judson Poppen of Kansas City, Kansas, Granddaughter Rachel Reso of Kansas City, Kansas, great granddaughters, Amanda and Hannah Cordes. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son Carl James, five sisters and one brother. Services were held at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison on Wednesday, December 31 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Memorial services were provided by the Allison Drill Team. Burial was in the Allison Cemetery. Arrangements by Sietsema- Vogel Funeral Homes.


Venita Mae Richtsmeier

Venita Mae Richtsmeier, 57, of Hampton, Iowa passed away December 24, 2003. She was born December 22, 1946 in rural Butler County, Iowa to Harold and Mae (Borneman) Richtsmeier. Venita graduated from the Dumont High School and attended college in Kansas. She was a farmer and member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton, Iowa. Venita is survived by two sons: Chris and special friend Becky Mahler of Hampton, Iowa and Evan and wife Carla Mahler of Washburn, Iowa; grandson: Zarek Mahler of Washburn; sister-in-law: Donnabelle Richtsmeier of Des Moines, Iowa; and uncle and aunt Raymond and Betty Wickham of Dumont, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Melvin. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Leon Kuehner accom-panying song leader Linda Kuehner. Pallbearers were Gary Bills, Tom Wickham, Owen Kolstad, Dennis Brocka, LeRoy Junker and Kenneth Armstrong. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Nettie Jungling

 Nettie Jungling, age 95, of Aplington, was born January 23, 1908, the daughter of Geert (George) and Stientja Staas Haats Eilderts in Wymeer, Germany. The family moved to the United States when she was one year of age. She received her education in a rural school house in Butler County, rural Aplington. On February 15, 1927, Nettie Eilderts was united in marriage with Folkert Jungling in the parsonage of Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington. They farmed north of Aplington until 1970, when they moved to their present home. She was a life-long member of the Bethel Reformed Church where she was a very active member. She loved her church and family. She enjoyed her flowers, gardening and traveling. Nettie died at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Folkert; one son, Gerald Jungling; a son-in-law, Gratus Mudderman; her parents; one sister, Christina Freese; three brothers, Dick, Harm and Koert Eilderts; two half brothers; four half sisters; three step brothers and two step sisters. Nettie is survived by three daughters, Gerdena Mudderman of Parkersburg, Esther Jungling of Waterloo, and Carol Kromminga and her husband, Arlen of Ackley; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Jungling of Aplington; eight grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington with Rev. Scott Summers officiating. Organist was Belva Schipper. Vocalists Willie and Randy Aalderks sang “One Day At A Time.” Congregational Hymns were “The Love of God,” “In The Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were David Mudderman, LaVern Mudderman, Kevin Jungling, Gaylen Kromminga, Dale de Neui, Scott Poppen, Dustin Mudderman and Derik Mudderman. Interment was in Bethel Church Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Verna Mae Detra Kampman

Verna Mae Detra Kampman, age 70 years, 4 months, of McQueeney, Texas passed away Saturday, January 3,2004 at the Northeast Methodist Hospital cancer unit in San Antonio following a very intense 4 month battle with an aggressive, fast moving cancer. Verna was born August 27, 1933 to John and Irene Grapp Detra on the family farm located north of Clarksville, Iowa. She and her family later moved to a farm west ofClarksville where she spent her “growing up years”. Verna was baptized in her youth at the age of accountability and never strayed from those basic core Christian beliefs. Verna attended the local rural schools, Clarksville High School, Wartburg College Waverly, Iowa, and then graduated with a B.A. Degree from San Diego State University, San Diego, California. Verna was a teacher by profession, beginning her teaching career 2 weeks after her 19th birthday at Jackson #4, a rural, one-room school near her home. She later taught at Brushy Mound School, Poway, and Orange Glen Public School Districts near Escondido, California. Additionally, Verna was a bible scholar, having spent 8 years in study with Bible Study Fellowship (B.S.F.), while also serving as a group leader for the organization. She qualified as a “Daughter of the American Revolution” (D.A.R.), being able to trace her ancestry back to Captain John Smith of the Mayflower. Verna married Conrad F. Kampman on May 19, 1956 at the “Little Brown Church” in Nashua, Iowa. Survivors include her husband Conrad; one son, Stephen John and wife Annette; one daughter, Stacie Kristine and husband Michael; and five grandchildren, Stephen Conrad, John Ryan, Katelyn Hope, Thomas Fredrick, Katherine Kristine.x One sister Marlys Detra of Clarksville, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Mary Louise who died in infancy; and one granddaughter, Rachel Ann, who also died in infancy. Memorial services were conducted on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at the Country Church of Marion, TX. with Pastor Elton Ikles officiating.


Agatha A. Krambeer

A Funeral Mass for Agatha A. Krambeer, 94, of Marble Rock were held Monday, January 12, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Agatha Anne Merfeld was born February 5, 1909, in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of John Joseph and Kathryn (Kramer) Merfeld, and died Thursday, January 8, 2004, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. She received her education at St. Mary’s School in Roseville and graduated from the Marble Rock Public School in 1926. She was employed at Moore’s General Store in Marble Rock as a clerk until becoming Assistant Postmaster in January 1935. On October 7, 1939, she was united in marriage to Donald Ellis Krambeer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Roseville. They made their home in Marble Rock where they were both active in the community. She retired from the Post Office in March 1973. Don preceded her in death on January 27, 1988. Agie was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Roseville, member of the Rosary Society, Marble Rock Historical Society, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Heritage Club. She was an avid N.Y. Mets and Iowa Hawkeye fan. Living family members include two sisters-in-law: Gila Merfeld of Greene and Audrey Merfeld of Marble Rock; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters: Marcellina, Barbara, Ann, and Christine; and six brothers: Tony, Merrick, Leander, Bernard, and Edward Merfeld and a brother in infancy.


Fay E. King

Fay E. King, 79, of Ionia and Nashua and formerly of New Hampton, died Friday, January 9, 2004 at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center of cancer. Funeral services were held Monday, January 12, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Pastor Dave Kramer presiding. Intermentwas in the New Hampton Cemetery with Paul, Alan, Brian and Ronald Miller, Rick Henninger and Lyle Smith serving as casket bearers. Fay E. King was born August 31, 1924 near Waverly on the farm of her parents, Ira M. and Emma A. (Seemann) Miller. She attended Clarksville and Waverly High Schools and received her Teachers Certificate from Wartburg College. Fay taught in the country schools for 8 years in Bremer, Butler and later in Chickasaw County. She married Earl F. King January 2, 1946 at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. Following their marriage, they lived for a few months in Clarksville before making their home in New Hampton September 1, 1946. While in New Hampton, she started the Sign Shop which she ran for 20 years. She taught in the Devon Country School for 4 years and was well known as owner of an animal shelter. The Kings lived in New Hampton for 46 years before retiring and moving to an acreage near Chickasaw in 1992. After the death of her husband she lived for a while in Nashua and later in Ionia before entering the Shell Rock Healthcare Center on November 11, 2003. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, in Nashua. Fay is survived by a half sister Carolyn Henninger of Waverly; a brother Dale Miller of Shell Rock; a step brother Orville Jones of Waverly and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl on October 20, 1992; 2 brothers Glenn and Lloyd Miller and 2 brothers in infancy; 1 sister Veleada Fails and 1 step brother Robert Jones.


Dennis L. Viers

A Funeral Mass for Dennis L. Viers, 58, of Greene, was held Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Dennis Laverne Viers was born March 14, 1945, in Greene, a son of Eugene Robert and Ruth Mae (Skillen) Viers, and died Friday, January 2,2004, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. He received his education at the Greene Public Schools. He entered into the United States Army on May 31, 1966, where he served with the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” in Vietnam. Dennis was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Parachute Badge. He was released from active duty on January 29,1969, and was honorably discharged May 30, 1972, Army Reserve. He also served with the Spt. Co. 1st Bn. 1133 Inf. Army National Guard. On June 14, 1969, he was united in marriage to Judy K. Belden at Nashua. They made their home in Greene and to this union was born two daughters. Dennis was employed for the City of Greene until 1973, and later worked for White Farm Equipment in Charles City until the factory closed. He was employed for Fischel Construction Co until 1995, and was currently employed for Greene Ag Services. Dennis will be remembered as an avid fisherman, and one who enjoyed Nascar races and football. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time and going fishing with his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his wife Judy of Greene, his two daughters: Debra Viers and Michelle (Shane) Ott of Greene; three grandchildren: McKennah, Kaleb, and Logan; his mother: Ruth Viers of Allison; one brother: Jim (Jo) Viers of Rockwell City, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father on March 24, 2003; two brothers: Kenneth Viers on May 8, 1998, and Robert “Butch” Viers of June 3, 2001; and a nephew: Joseph Viers on November 25, 1977. Mabel Madelyn Rottink

Mabel Madelyn Rottink, 80, of the Clarksville Community Nursing Home and formerly of Shell Rock, Iowa, died at the nursing home Tuesday evening, January 6, 2004, of natural causes. Mabel was born on December 14, 1923 in Nashua, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Lillian (Grapp) Fisher. She attended country school near Horton. Following her schooling, Mabel worked at a chicken factory in Tripoli and later worked at the Waverly Bremer Pack. Mabel then helped on the farm and when Mabel and Roy moved into town she opened a day care center out of her home. On April 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Roy V. Rottink in Waverly, Iowa. The couple lived in Shell Rock, where Mabel worked at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in the laundry department until she retired. Mabel and Roy were later divorced. Mabel became a resident of the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville on July 14, 2000. Mabel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Shell Rock and a former member of the Horton Baptist Church. She enjoyed baking bread, spending time with her grandchildren, quilting, gardening, and Mabel always saw the lighter side of things which made her laugh a lot. Mabel is survived by her daughter, Judy Williams and her husband, Gene Murray of Waverly, Iowa; her son Allan Rottink and his wife, Judy of Shell Rock, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Jana Williams of Cedar Falls, Lynette Weidler and her husband, Todd of Waverly, Mary Dennis and her husband, Steve of Ankeny, Eric Rottink and his wife, Heidi of Waverly and Cory Rottink of Ankeny; 9 great grandchildren, Bethany Williams, Caitlin and Alyssa Retterath, Cassidy and Megan Weidler, Isaac and Kirstin Dennis, Cassandra and Matthew Rottink one step-great grandson, Donovan Weidler; and four sisters, Luella Kelsey of Tripoli, Elaine Walters of Janesville, Charlotte Reasoner of Raymond and Beulah Rutledge of Britt. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sons in infancy, Daniel and Lynn; three sisters, her twin Myrtle Kelsey, Ruby Carpenter and Dorothy in infancy; two brothers, Merland Fisher and Wilbur Fisher; and her ex-husband, Roy Rottink. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at United Methodist Church in Shell Rock, with Pastor Realff Ottesen officiating. Burial was in the Allison Cemetery in Allison. Memorials may be directed to the family and a memorial fund will be established at a later date.

Julia Grace Johnson

Julia Grace Johnson, age 78, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of John and Grace (Mulder) Kromminga on December 28, 1925, rural Austinville, Iowa. She was baptized at the Austinville Christian Reformed Church She received her education from a rural school near her home. Julia Kromminga was united in marriage with Richard H. Johnson on May 1, 1944, at the parsonage of the Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church. To this union was born two daughters, Judy and Rhonda. They made their home and farmed north of Parkersburg for 15 years. In 1960, they moved to town in Parkersburg. Julia was currently a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. Prior to her illness she was active in the church choir, the Women’s Bible Study and taught Sunday School at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. She was a soloist at many weddings and funerals. After her illness she continued to be active as the leader of a Friendship Bible Study in her home. She had a wonderful memory, especially for dates, and could tell you the birthdays of all of her entire family including all of her nieces and nephews. She was interested in genealogy and enjoyed compiling information with her family. The flower arrangement on the casket was created from instructions from Julia. There are equal amounts of red and white carnations and greenery symbolizing red (sin), white (forgiveness). No sins left over, all forgiven by faith. Washed on Calvary’s cross in the “Blood of the Lamb.” Julia died at 5:05 p.m., Thursday, January 15, 2004, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Henry Kromminga. Julia is survived by her husband, Richard H. Johnson of Parkersburg, Iowa; two daughters, Judy Schoenbeck of Parkersburg, Iowa, and Rhonda Johnson of Tripoli, Iowa; two grandchildren, Shelly (Rich) Olsson of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Jeremiah Saul of Parkersburg, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Dana Schoenbeck, Hunter Saul and Rich Olsson Illinois; and two sisters, Anna Mae Buseman of Aplington, Iowa and Marian Harken of Parkersburg, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 19, 2004, at Faith Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa, with Rev. Daniel J. Larson officiating. Organist was Bernita Nicklaus. Vocalist Stan Thompson sang “Foot Prints in the Sand” and “The Lord Is My Shepherd.” Congregational Hymns were “Crown Him with Many Crowns” and “Faith of Our Fathers.” Casketbearers were Ed Wubbena, Lee Buseman, Gary Schrage, Kevin Kromminga, Randal Johnson and Dick Harken. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Flower Committee was Erma Schipper and Kathryn Karsjens. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Geraldine Uhlenhopp

Geraldine Uhlenhopp, age 71, of Allison and formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was born November 11, 1932, the daughter of Harm and Grace Hartema Williams near Allison in Butler County, Iowa. She graduated from Aplington High School in 1950. Geraldine was united in married with George R. Uhlenhopp and the couple later divorced. She was a former member of First Reformed Church in Aplington. She became a resident of Allison Health Care Center in Allison, Iowa in August, 1977. Geraldine died Sunday, January 11, 2004, at Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly, Iowa. She was preceded in death by one son, Randy Uhlenhopp; her parents; three brothers, Jerry, Herman and Harold Williams and four sisters, Hattie Jurgena, Jennie Baskins, Dena Reints and Ann Springer. She is survived by four sons, Keith (friend, Nancy) Uhlenhopp, Parkersburg, Iowa; Steve (friend, Deb) Uhlenhopp, Aredale, Iowa; Kenny (Paula) Uhlenhopp, Dumont, Iowa and Gary (Jami) Uhlenhopp, Ackley, Iowa; one daughter, Darla (Rick) Buseman, Wellsburg, Iowa; ten grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Todd Rempe of the Wellsburg Reformed Church officiating. Special music was “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Keith Uhlenhopp, Steve Uhlenhopp, Kenny Uhlenhopp, Gary Uhlenhopp, Nick Buseman and Cole Buseman. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Allison Health Care Center. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, is in charge of arrangements.


Ernest Ray Nicklaus

Ernest Ray Nicklaus, age 92, of Parkersburg was born the son of Joseph and Anna (Ostendorf) Nicklaus on August 9, 1911, in Parkersburg, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1929. Ernie made his home in Parkersburg. He worked for his brother Ralph at Nicklaus Meat Market as a meat cutter. His specialty was making bologna. He continued cutting meat when the business changed owners and retired in 1968 from Palmers Grocery Store. Ernie attended the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening and going golfing. Every chance Ernie got, he loved to attended all sporting events and often he would travel to professional games. Ernie died Thursday, January 15, 2004, at the Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, Iowa from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Joe, Ralph and Harm Nicklaus. Ernie is survived by one niece, Darlene (Don) Truax of Parkersburg and her children, Rick and Suzanne Nicklaus of Irvin , California and their sons, Alex and Jonathan, Steve and Pat Nicklaus of Winterset, Iowa and their daughter, Becki and Teresa and Mike Whitcome of Mantorville, Minnesota and their daughter, Autumn. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 17, 2004, at the First Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa, with Rev. Ron Bartlett officiating. Organist was Mary Ann Simon. Vocalist Tom Teeple sand “How Great Thou Art.” Congregational Hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In The Garden.” Casketbearers were Don Cashett, Rick Cashett, Tim Cashett, Mitch Cashett, Coleen Mennen and Jessie Mennen. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Edward Frederick William Schmadeke

Edward Frederick William Schmadeke, 70, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died early Monday morning, January 19, 2004, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from congestive heart failure. Edward was born on January 30, 1933, at the Waverly Hospital, the son of Clarence and Hilda (Klunder) Schmadeke. He attended country school at Pleasant Valley, and graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1951. On September 14, 1952, he was united in marriage to Willa Joyce Kielman at the Lutheran Church in Greene. The couple made their home on a farm near Clarksville, where they dairy farmed until 1980, when they moved to Shell Rock. Ed then worked for the Crop-Mate Fertilizer Plant in Shell Rock and also sold Super Sweet Feed until ill health forced him to retire in 1995. Ed was a member of First United Church of Christ - Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville. He enjoyed raising pony’s and attended many parades with his pony’s, but most of all Ed loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren - they were his pride and joy. He is survived by his wife, Willa Joyce Schmadeke of Shell Rock; his three children and their spouses, Jenice and Lee Engel of Clarksville, Greg and Taunia Schmadeke of Shell Rock, and Tamara and Lance Brown of Shell Rock; 9 grandchildren, Jennifer Brase, Alisha Tellinghuisen, Amanda Kampman, LeeAnn, Laura and Jeremy Engel, Marj Shafer, Landon and Dustin Brown; 3 great grandchildren; 3 step-great grandchilren; and two sisters and their husbands, Mary Jo and Parker Smith of Ankeny, and Cheryl and Keith Becker of Clarksville. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; 2 great grandchildren, Tyler and Isaac Brase; and one brother, Duane Schmadeke. Celebration of Life Services were held on Thursday, January 22, 2004, at First United Church of Christ-Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, with Rev. Anne Sunday officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family and a memorial fund will be established at a later date.


Claire N. Stock

Claire N. Stock, 79, of Dumont, Iowa passed away January 16, 2004 in her home in Dumont, Iowa. She was born on December 20, 1924 in San Francisco, California to Francis and Helen (Martin) Kavanaugh. She graduated from St. Peter’s Catholic Schools in San Francisco, California. She then received her Nursing degree from St. Joseph College of Nursing in San Francisco, California. After graduating from St. Joseph College of Nursing, she received her Masters degree in Nursing from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She served her country as a Navy Cadet Nurse. She was married to Dale Stock on June 4, 1947 in Hampton, Iowa. She worked as a Registered Nurse for 30 years at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa until she retired in 1986. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton, Iowa. She taught Catholicism and was on the St. Francis Church Guild in Dumont, Iowa. Claire was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Dumont. She was also a Nursing Instructor at NIACC in Mason City, and a 4-H leader. She is survived by her husband Dale Stock of Dumont; daughter Deb and husband Glen Young of Greeley; son David and wife Jo Stock of Parkersburg; grandson Josh Ott of Waterloo; three grand-daughters: Katy Stock of Waterloo; Heather Ott of Readlyn, and Molly Stock of Parkersburg; three great granddaughters: Brittney Brommel of Readlyn, Valley True of Mitchellville and Linzee Osborn of Readlyn. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Mary. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 19, 2004 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Leon Kuehner accom-panying special music by Dawn Groszkruger. The song leader was Dave Rowen. Pallbearers were Josh Ott, Jim Gray, Barney Dillon, Mark Alitz, Dwight Peterson and Jim Angstman. Honorary pallbearers were Bret Morgan, Roger Sage and Leonard Pecha. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Donald Ray Hoodjer

Donald Ray Hoodjer, 68, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Don was born November 23, 1935 in Clarksville, Iowa to Lester and Pearl (Rottink) Hoodjer. Don served 20+ years in the U.S. Army with tours that included Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1976. After retiring from the Army in 1978, he worked for C & D for 22 years. Don enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid reader and enjoyed coin and stamp collecting. He was loved very much and will be missed by many. He is preceded in death by his father, Lester and his ex-wife, Colleen Hoodjer. Don is survived by his wife, Carol Troutman; his children, Jacqueline Tustin (Jon) of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, Pamela Bartlett (Tom) of Naperville, Illinois, Dawn Dutch (Gary) of Colorado Springs, Randy Hoodjer (Mandi) of Colorado Springs, Kevin Hoodjer (Jennifer) of Savannah, Georgia; step-sons Doug Troutman (Laura) and Don Philip Troutman, both of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren: Jennifer, Michael and Lauren Tustin; Derek Bartlett; Emily and Evan Dutch; Dakota, Sierra, Michael and Mackenzie Hoodjer; Bailee and Benjamin Troutman; his mother, Pearl Pace; four siblings, Norma Bell (Ralph), Lavonne Chapman, Merlin Hoodjer, Patricia Hoodjer, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1455 N. Union Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO. 80909. Visitation was held Saturday, January 17, 2004 followed by the Memorial Service at Mountain View Mortuary in Colorado Springs. Interment was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.


John Carl August Brandenburg

ohn Carl August Brandenburg, age 82, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Rudolph and Bertha (Theimann) Brandenburg on April 22, 1921, in Bremer County, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, Iowa. He attended the country school near his home and later attended St. Paul’s Parochial School in Waverly. His high school years were spent in Waverly, graduating in 1940. On April 22, 1947, John was united in marriage with Dorothy Roose at St. John Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. They made their home and farmed on their current family farm southwest of Clarksville. John also took great pride in his Brown Swiss Milk Cows and Black Angus cattle. He loved working with animals, the farming in general and enjoyed looking out over the landscape. He also owned and operated the Ford Dealership in Clarksville for several years. John was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Before his health failed he served as a board member, usher, played dart ball and was in Lutheran Brotherhood. He also was a member of the Clarksville Lions Club and served as Chairman of ASCS. In his spare time he enjoyed restoring an old truck and did a little woodworking. All of the visits from relatives and friends were much appreciated especially when health declined. On January 21, 2004, John died at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Harold, Carl and Martin Brandenburg. John is survived by his wife, Dorothy Brandenburg of Clarksville, Iowa; one sister, Margaret Schuldt of Shell Rock, Iowa; four sisters-in-law, Marjorie (Harry) Klinetob of Clarksville, Iowa, Audrey Brandenburg of Whitewater, Wisconsin, Dorothy Brandenburg of Waverly, Iowa, and Lillian Brandenburg of Decorah, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2004 at St John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. David Nelson officiating. Organist was Lois Roose. Vocalists were Glenda Timmer and Liz Wedeking who sang “Long Journey Home.” Congregational Hymns were “Blessed Assurance” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were Dale Janssen, Michael Schuldt, Randal Johnson, Elmer Reints, Philip Eggleston and Jim Roose. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


George J. Seehusen

George J. Seehusen, age 93, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of John and Dena (Gelder) Seehusen on October 28, 1910, in Grundy County, near Buck Grove, Aplington, Iowa. He was baptized as an infant at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wellsburg, Iowa. He received his education from a rural school near his home. He worked on the family farm, (Buck Grove and Fern areas) until he was old enough to travel to Minnesota to become a hired hand and worked for various farmers there for room, board, and a small salary. On February 18, 1937, George was united in marriage with Katie DeVries at the parsonage of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, Holland, Iowa. They made their home and farmed in Grundy and Butler Counties. In 1959 they moved from the farm to a home in Parkersburg. George began working at the Waterloo Register Company, where he enjoyed various factory jobs until 1971. Following his retirement he worked part time for Palmers Grocery Store. For years he and his wife, Katie, were custodians at the Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg, where they were devoted Charter members. George served on the Consistory and was on church committees at various times throughout its establishment and development. Katie died on February 24, 1978. George married Marian Abbas on July 5, 1980, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Parkersburg and he became a member of the Christian Reformed Church. George enjoyed woodworking, traveling with Marian, gardening and took great pride in their yard. On July 1, 2002, George was admitted as a resident of Ackley Presbyterian Village and died on January 19, 2004, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Seehusen; a great grandson, Daran Cordes; parents; one brother, John Seehusen; three sisters, Grace Rewerts, Bertha Henze and Annie Muller. George is survived by his wife, Marian Seehusen of Ackley Presbyterian Village, Ackley, IA; one son, Roger (Sharon) of Parkersburg, IA; four daughters, Darlene (Darwin) Nicklaus of Parkersburg, IA, Arvilla (Gary) Irwin of Janesville, IA, Marlys (David) Fisher of Hubbard, IA and Cathy (Daryl) Myers of Parkersburg, IA; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one step-son, Ron (Marlene) Abbas of Maurice, IA; two step-daughters, Vickie (George) Streich of Delano, MN and Sharon (Roger) Seehusen of Parkersburg; six step-grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren; one brother, Dick (Rose) Seehusen of Grundy Center, IA; and one brother-in-law, Clarence Muller of Reinbeck, IA. Funeral Services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 23, 2004 at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Frank Pott officiating. The organist was Janet Johnson. Vocalist Richard Schafer sang “Sheltered Safe in the Arms Of Jesus.” Congregational hymns were “Old Rugged Cross,” and “What a Day That Will Be.” Casketbearers were Shawn Seehusen, Bill Myers, Dalen Fisher, Rod Cordes, Dale Meester, and Paul Cook. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Randall D. Goddard

Randall D. Goddard, 47, of Allison, Iowa passed away January 21, 2004 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Randall was born on November 20, 1956 in Charles City, Iowa to Ralph and LaVonne (Duckworth) Goddard. He attended school in Charles City and graduated from Waverly High School. Randall owned and operated Countryside Welding near Allison. After closing the shop he was employed by Unverferth Manufac-turing in Shell Rock, he also worked at Waynes Engineering in Cedar Falls. He was affiliated with the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. Randall was a member of the Blacksmith and Welding Association of Iowa and a past member of the Dumont Lions Club. He enjoyed going to renaissance activities, canoeing and playing paintball with his children. Randall is survived by three sons: Jonathan Goddard of Waverly, Eric Goddard of Allison and Chase Goddard of Shell Rock; parents: Ralph and LaVonne Goddard of Mosinee, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2004 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying soloist, Mrs. Norman Brown. Ushers were Harold Reents and Harley Cuvelier. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
