Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, Greene with
Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery,
Greene with military honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American
Legion of Greene. Wayne Vinton Feldman was born September 16, 1929 in
rural Allison, a son of Fred and Marian (Trepp) Feldman, and died
Saturday, March 26, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. He

Cena Thorne
Cena Thorne, age 81, of New Hartford, Iowa, was born in rural New
Hartford on her parents’, Henry and Pearl (Miller) Kappers, farm on July
28, 1923. Cena graduated from the New Hartford High School in 1940. She
worked at variety stores in both Grundy Center and Parkersburg following
her graduation. Cena Kappers was united in marriage with Albert Thorne
on December 31, 1947, at the Bethel Reformed Church parsonage by Rev.
Koenen. She was working at the Lutz Grocery Store in Aplington at the
time she was married to Albert. They made their home north of New
Hartford after marriage, and farme ...
Hilda Suzanne Helmke
Baby Hilda Suzanne Helmke, daughter of Mitch and Kristin Helmke of
Dumont, passed away March 25, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospitals
in Iowa City, Iowa. A family service will be held at a later date.

Henry “Buster” W. Maass

Funeral services for Henry “Buster” W. Maass, 89, formerly of Greene,
were held Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, with
Pastor Gary Hatcher of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was
in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Henry William Maass was born June
11, 1915 in Coldwater Township, Rural Greene, a son of Henry F. and
Katie (Folkers) Maass, and died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at St. Luke’s
Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He received his education in the rural
Butler County Schools. He was married to Merle Brown in 1939 at Greene.
Henry was employed as a groundskeeper for the University of Northern
Iowa and Gates Park in Waterloo and was also employed by Wagner
Manufacturing in Cedar Falls. In 1962 he moved to Cedar Rapids where he
was last employed by Century Engineering, retiring in 1978. Henry will
be remembered as a social person who enjoyed visiting with his friends
and neighbors, playing cards, and one who enjoyed good food. He was an
avid fisherman who enjoyed returning home to Greene to fish along the
banks of the Shell Rock River. In his declining years, Henry became
dependent on a special friend, Al Reinke, who tended to his needs.
Living family members include his three sons: Dr. Ralph (Margaret) Maass
of Sioux City, Burrell Maass of Des Moines, Larry (Louise) Maass of
Loveland, Co., three grandsons: Linn (Linda) Maass, Carl Maass, Phillip
Maass, a niece: Willa Joyce Schmadeke of Shell Rock, two great nieces
and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by a grandson: Ray Maass
in 1996, his parents, two sisters: Laura Jenny and Zella Kielman, and
one brother: Hilton Maass. Those planning an expression of sympathy may

Amy Laurena Topp

Amy
Laurena Topp, 91, Waverly, Iowa, died on Friday morning, April 1, 2005,
at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural
causes. Amy was born on April 22, 1913 at Dows, Iowa, the daughter of
George and Laura (Hagen) Alverson. Amy was baptized and confirmed at
First Lutheran Church in Dows, Iowa. She graduated from Dows High School
in 1931, and then attended Waldorf College in Forest City, graduating in
1934. She began her teaching career in Buckeye, teaching in the
elementary grades and high school music three years. She went from
Buckeye to the Wellsburg School System also as an elementary teacher and
high school music for three years. During this time she was appointed to
a Committee of Five in the state to organize the County Educations
Councils. She then went to Eldora where she taught for four years after
which she was elected Assistant County Superintendent for Hardin County
where she served seven years. Amy then went to Mason City as an
instructor in the elementary grades where she taught for twenty-five
years. During this time she was president of the Mason City Education
Association, was appointed to the State Education Council, was Director
of the North Central Education Association of Teachers in seventeen
counties, and was a life member of the Iowa State Education Association.
During summers when she was not teaching, Amy attended classes at Drake
University, Luther College, State University of Iowa, and Upper Iowa
University where she received her B.A.Degree. Besides her work in the
educational field, Amy has been a worker in the church. She was a Sunday
Church School teacher for twenty-five years, a member of the church
choirs in the towns were she taught and a leader in Bible Study groups
for women. On April 18, 1979, Amy was united in marriage to Rev. Reuben
Topp at Immanuel Church of Christ in Clarksville. The couple moved to
the Eichhorn Haus in Waverly on April 29, 1999, and on January 5, 2005,
Amy became a resident of the Woodland Terrace at the Bartels Home. Amy
was active in the AMVETS Auxiliary, where she held several offices. In
June of 1989, she was elected State President of the Department of Iowa,
and was state officer for six years. Amy was also very active with a
number of community groups in both Clarksville and Waverly. Amy is
survived by her husband, Rev. Reuben J. Topp of Waverly; one step-son,
Joel and Patt Austin Topp of Winterhaven, Florida; one step-daughter,
Lois and Mike Sinram of Waterloo; step-grandsons, Justin and Meta Topp,
Zachary and Joshua Sinram; a step-granddaughter, Mary, and a step-great
granddaughter, Talia. She was preceded in death by her parents; one
brother, Orien Alverson; one sister, Avonelle; a niece, Norma; and a
nephew, James. Celebration of Life Services were held on Monday, April
4, 2005, at Unity Presbyterian Church rural Clarksville, with Pastor Don
Feuerhak officiating. Burial was in Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Darrel A. Barth

Funeral services for longtime Greene businessman, Darrel A. Barth, 88,
of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, at the First
Presbyterian Church, Greene, with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial
will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Darrel Andrew Barth was born
February 23, 1917, in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Harry
Franklin and Mae Edna (Fisher) Barth, and died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at
the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
He received his education in the rural Floyd County Schools and the
Greene Public Schools. As a young man he farmed with his father until
1947 when he joined Barth Chevrolet in Greene. On May 26, 1940 he was
united in marriage to Roberta M. Boyd in Charles City. To this union
were blessed six children. Fuzz coached and played fast-pitch softball
and organized teams under the church leagues, Barth Trucking, and Barth
Chevrolet from the early 40’s to the mid 60’s. He also sponsored the
Barth Chevrolet Bowling team for many years. He and Roberta went on many
Chevy sponsored trips, including Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii.
They spent their winters in Florida for twenty five years. Fuzz was a
huge sports fan, especially following the Hawkeyes, the Vikings, and any
sport his grandkids were playing. He was an avid bowler, golfer, and
loved to go “up North” fishing. Darrel was a faithful member of the
First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee and an Elder. He
was a member of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association, Butler County
Dealers Association, Greene Commercial Club, and a member of the Round
Grove Golf & Country Club, where he enjoyed helping mow the fairways. He
is survived by his loving wife and companion of nearly 65 years: Roberta
of Greene, three sons: Bob (Rita) Barth, Greene, Kenny Barth, Clarion,
Harry (Jean) Barth, Tipton, two daughters: Barbara (Jim) Killoran,
Dubuque, Linda (Mel) Anderson, Tripoli, 18 grandchildren, 28 great
grandchildren, a sister: Charlotte O’Brien, Greene, and an aunt: Geneva
Martin of Charles City. Darrel was preceded in death by his son: Jerry
Barth (1977), his parents, and one brother: Mervin Barth (1959). Those

Clarksville, Iowa, was stillborn on April 1, 2005, at Allen Memorial

Alfred R. Rieman

Alfred R. Rieman, 70, of Clarksville, Iowa, died Thursday at his home.
He was born on November 18, 1934, in Butler County, Iowa, near Allison,
the son of Enno and Minnie (Bertram) Rieman. He was baptized on December
9, 1934, at St. James Lutheran Church, Allison. Following his formal
education he helped his family on the farm and for a short time also
worked on the railroad. On September 11, 1955, he was united in marriage
to Mildred Meyne in Bremer, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm
across the road from his parents, and to this union two daughters were
born, Marilyn and Janet. Mildred and Alfred had farmed in Butler County
their entire married life. Mildred died on February 3, 2004, and Alfred
has lived in their home ever since. He was a member of Faith Lutheran
Church, Shell Rock. Alfred trucked lime, corn cobs, and grain for area
farmers and he also applied lime to many area fields. Alfred liked to
fish and hunt pheasants. He is survived by his daughter, Janet (Bruce)
Johnston of Waverly; son-in-law, Steve Milius of Denver, Iowa; and two
granddaughters, Mindy Johnston and Renee Milius. He was preceded in
death by his parents; his wife, Mildred; and one daughter, Marilyn in
1999. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Faith
Lutheran Church, Shell Rock, with Pastor Steven G. McGinley officiating.
Burial was in the Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville. Memorials may be

Funeral services for Jan Lamoine Hilton, 69, of Conroe were held on
Monday, April 4, 2005 in Cashner Colonial Chapel with Rev. Tim Byrd
officiating. Interment followed in Garden Park Cemetery. Mr. Hilton was
born on November 10, 1935 in Monticello, Indiana and passed away on
March 30, 2005 in Memorial Hermann Hospital, The Woodlands, TX. He
served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and
Vietnam War, and retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer with the
rank ATC. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He is
survived by his wife, Barbara Gallmeyer Hilton of Conroe, Texas; sons,
Robert Hilton of Everett, Washington, and Eugene Hilton and wife Rhonda
of Lexington, Kentucky; grandchildren, Amanda and Adam Hilton of
Lexington, Kentucky, stepson, Richard Marshall of Abilene, Texas;
stepdaughter, Doris Boswell of Childress, Texas; sisters, Marilyn Mathew
and husband Gerald of Monticello, Indiana, and Gwen Whitlow and husband

Selma Orpha Landsgaard

Selma Orpha Landsgaard, 92, formerly of St. Olaf, died Tuesday, April 5,
2005, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, where she has
resided since 2000. She was born January 25, 1913, on a farm near Elgin.
She was the third child of Olavus T. and Belle (Stav) Knudtson. She was
baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Norwegian at the Marion
Lutheran Church in Gunder. Selma was an avid reader; she attended rural
school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Elgin High School
1932. She took the Normal Training course for elementary teaching at
Upper Iowa University. She taught in rural schools from primary through
eighth grade for two years. She was united in marriage to Gunnar
Landsgarrd on May 24, 1934, in Waukon. Two daughters were born to this
union. Selma was a telephone operator in St. Olaf for a time. She then
worked as a postal clerk in St. Olaf, later becoming postmaster which
she dearly loved. She retired from the post office at the age of
seventy. Selma was a great bridge player. She loved to listen to her
daughters sing, and attended many of their concerts while in college.
Selma also attended many of the school concerts where her daughters were
teaching. She was active in Ladies Aid and WELCA. Survivors include her
two daughters, Glenda Shirley (Pete) Timmer of Allison and Virginia Ann
Luster of Harpers Ferry; grandchildren, Erik (Jesi) Luster of Cresco,
Randi (Rev. Kris) Snyder of Hanlontown and Bjorn Luster of Decorah; a
newborn great-granddaughter, Kjersti Margit Snyder; and a brother, Elmer
Knudtson of Guttenberg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband Gunnar on March 18, 1982, her son-in-law, James Luster in 1988,
a sister, Myrtle Butikofer, a brother, Orvin Knudtson, a niece, Ramona
Moore and a nephew, Ronald Knudtson. Funeral services will be held at
11:00 AM on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Norway Lutheran Church, rural
St. Olaf, with Rev. Marshall Hahn and Rev. Kris Snyder. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 PM on Friday,

Lovola F. West Burgess

Lovola F. West Burgess, 88, passed away on March 18, 2005, at her home
in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her family by her side.Lovola was born
in Clarksville, Iowa, May 18, 1916, the daughter of Lloyd and Pearl (Klinetob)
West. She earned a Bachelors Degree at the University of Iowa in 1937
and married Howard Burgess, her husband of 61 years, in 1939. She later
moved to Albuquerque and earned a Masters Degree in Guidance and
Counseling at the University of New Mexico in 1959. Her professional
experience included 25 years of devoted service to the Albuquerque
Public Schools beginning in 1953 as an English teacher at Ernie Pyle
Junior High, Washington Junior High, and then Valley High School where
she was a guidance counselor. She later became the Assistant Principal
of Del Norte High School, and then Principal of Rio Grande High School,
where she retired in 1978.Lovola was elected to the Butler County Hall
of Fame in 1993. Her career of volunteer activities included National
President of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) from
1992-1994; the AARP Board of Directors; The Governor’s Health Care Cost
and Access Commission; member of the Board of Directors for the
Coalition for Children; volunteer for the Human Services Coalition; and
Washington Senior Intern for former U.S. Representative Manual Lujan. In
addition, Lovola recently served on the Policy Advisory Committee of the
State Agency on Aging; the State Medicaid Advisory Commitee; the State
Managed Long Term Care Advisory Committee, and the St. Joseph’s PACE
Advisory Committee. Her death follows that of her husband, Howard, and
her older daughter, Suzanne Lewis. She is survived by her younger
daughter, Patricia Kerr and son-in-law Bill Kerr; son-in-law, Larry
Lewis; granddaughter, Jennifer Sturgeon Burita and her husband, Mike, of
Alexandria, Virginia, granddaughter, Julie Sturgeon of Littleton,
Colorado; and great-grandsons, Alex Burita, age 2, and Evan Burita, age
2 months. A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, April 10, 2005, at
Grace Church in Albuquerque. The family requests that memorials be made

Ardith Faye Peterson, age 60, of Apache Junction, Arizona, formerly of
Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Elmer and Lorraine (Haan)
Kannegieter on August 14, 1944, Iowa Falls, Iowa. She received her
education and graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1962. She
continued her education at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls for
a year. In 1966 Ardith was united in marriage with William Wooster in
California. They made their home in Arizona and were later divorced.
Ardith worked 23 years for the Salt River Project in Phoenix, Arizona.
She then moved to Des Moines, Iowa and worked for Mid American Energy
for a while and later moved to Apache Junction, Arizona where she worked
for Pinal County as a Court Recorder for six years. Ardith grew up in
the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg and was currently a
member of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Mesa, Arizona. She enjoyed
decorating her home and horticulture. Ardith loved spending time with
her family, especially her grandchildren. On Tuesday, April 5, 2005,
Ardith died at her home in Apache Junction, Arizona, of complications of
cancer. Ardith is survived by two children Dawn De Clair of Lancaster,
Pennsylvania and Nick Wooster of Apache Junction, Arizona; three
grandchildren, Katie, Zach and Danielle Faye De Clair; her parents,
Elmer and Lorraine Kannegieter of Parkersburg, Iowa; three brothers,
Terry (Sherry) Kannegieter, Denny (Nancy) Kannegieter and Brent (Linda)
Kannegieter all of Parkersburg, Iowa; one sister, Verla Rae Kellen,
Sioux City, Iowa; 14 nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Funeral
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at the First
Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Ron Bartlett
officiating. Organist was Renise Aswegan. Vocalist Randy Aalderks sang
“One Day at a Time.” Congregational Hymns were “In The Garden” and
“Amazing Grace.” Casketbearers were Austin Kannegieter, Don Poppens,
Randy Kannegieter, Derold Meyer, Mark Haan and David Meyer. Flower
Committee was Gladys Boomgarden and Vada Luhring. Interment was in Oak
Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home,

Anna Rose Remley

Anna Rose Remley Thompson Hirsch, age 86, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born
August 5, 1918, in Lafayette Township, Bremer County, to Walter Leland
and Emeline Youmans Remley. She graduated from the Waverly High School
in 1936. Anna worked at the Brigg’s Grocery Store in Plainfield, Iowa
until her marriage. Anna was united in marriage with Arthur N. Thompson
on December 20, 1938, at the First Methodist Church in Plainfield. They
made their home and farmed around Shell Rock, Iowa. In the early 40’s
they moved to Rockford, Illinois and a few years later they returned to
the Shell Rock and Clarksville area and resumed farming. Anna was the
head cook at the Clarksville Community School from 1961 - 1964 and at
the Bartels Nursing Home in Waverly for an additional 10 - 12 years. Art
passed away on February 10, 1972. On December 12, 1980, Anna married
Henry W. Hirsch, Jr. at Anna’s home. Anna was a member of the Community
United Methodist Church in Clarksville, where she was active in the
Ladies Circle and very active in the Women’s Fellowship. Through the
years she enjoyed camping and fishing. She liked to sew, cook and play
games. She especially liked taking short trips with her children. Anna
died at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville on April 9, 2005, of
natural causes. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur
Thompson; two brothers, Lloyd and Walter Remley; and two sisters, Gladys
Hughes and Alice Holmes. Anna is survived by her husband, Henry Hirsch,
Jr. of Community Nursing Home in Clarksville; one son, Edward (Sandra)
Thompson of St. Charles, Missouri; one daughter, Patricia (Dean) Klunder
of Waverly, Iowa; six grandchildren and three step grandchildren; four
great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; two brothers,
Harold (Dorothea) Remley of Dodge Center, Minnesota and Marlowe
(Virginia) Remley of Waverly, Iowa; two sisters, Nettie Lebeck of
Clarksville, Iowa and Gertrude (Darrell) Bienemann of Plainfield, Iowa;
a brother-in-law, Lloyd Hughes of Missouri; and a sister-in-law, Thelma
Remley of Waverly, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on
Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in
Clarksville, Iowa with Rev. Ann Donat officiating. Organist was Lola
Clark. Congregational Hymns were “Blest Be The Tie That Binds,” “In The
Garden” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casketbearers were Jerome Bieneman,
Ron Lebeck, Ken Hoodjer and Don Lebeck. Interment was in the Riverside
Cemetery Shell Rock, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville,

Annie Rieman, 87, of Allison, Iowa, passed away April 7, 2005, at the
Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa. She was born September 16, !917,
in Ackley, Iowa, to Juren and Kurna (Halfwassen) Brandt. Annie attended
rural country school in Geneva, Iowa. She was married on January 19,
1936, in Allison, Iowa, to Nena Rieman. She was a homemaker and a member
of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. She enjoyed animals,
working outside, gardening and flowers. Annie is survived by her
daughter Kurna Haan of Allison, daughter Joanne & husband Richard Bloom
of Allison, daughter Rosemary & husband Dean Fleharty of Prairie Home,
Missouri, many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by
her parents, husband, one son Arend, two brothers Ben and Henry Brandt,
three half sisters Bena Steenhard, Reka Brodbeck, Anna Tamminga, and
half brother Fiako VanHorn. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m.,
Monday April 11, 2005 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev.
Jeff Blank officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs.
Cecil Radcliffe accompanying the congregational singing. The flower
committee was Janice Miller and Norma Klingbeil. Pallbearers were
Russell Miller, Randy Miller, Jake Brandt, Marvin Brandt, Dallas Kluiter
and Larry Richtsmeier. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery
with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Marie O’Neill Hinders, 32, of Bartlett, Illinois, formerly of
Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 29, at home of cancer. She was born
September 26, 1972 in Waterloo, daughter of Bob and Rosie O’Neill. She
married Scott Hinders June 23, 2001 at the Garden Gazebo on the Green in
Iowa City. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1991, attended the
University Of Northern Iowa and the University Of Iowa College of
Pharmacy, graduating May 15, 1998 with a Doctorate Of Pharmacy. She was
a consultant Pharmacist with Pharmacy Care Associates in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include: her husband; her parents of Waterloo; two brothers,
Mic (Lisa) O’Neill of Waterloo and Dennis (Andi) O’Neill of Dike; two
sisters, Peggy O’Neill of Iowa City and Sandy (Ken) Schooley of Seattle,
Washington; nephews and nieces, Ryan and Ross Schooley and Lauren,
Connor and Riley O’ Neill; father and mother-in-law, Randy and Judy
Hinders of Clarksville; brothers-in-law, Tony (Lori) Hinders of Waterloo
and Tim (Kristen Priebe) Hinders of Cedar Falls; and nephew and
niece-in-law, Brandon and Erin Hinders. Services were held Saturday at
St. Edward’s Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Eugene Everett Sidmore

Eugene Everett Sidmore, 86, of Dumont, passed away on Tuesday April 12,
2005 after a long illness. Memorial Services were held on Sunday April
17, 2005 at 2:30 P.M. at New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont.
Pastor Terra Admundson officiated. Private inurnment will take place at
a later date at the Dumont Cemetery. Arrangements by the Cremation
Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa. His wife Arlene, a daughter
Nadine Sidmore and a son Larry Sidmore all of Dumont survive Eugene.
Also surviving are a brother Harold Sidmore of Dumont, a sister Shirley
Hansen of Aredale and one grandson, Shawn of Tampa, FL. He was preceded
in death by his parents, one brother, and a sister. Eugene was born on
Saturday March 11, 1919 to Claude and Iva (Elliot) Sidmore in Aredale.
He married Arlene Porter on February 15, 1940 in Mason City. Much of his
life was spent farming. A memorial fund has been established.

Violet M. Bruns

Violet M. Bruns, 88, of Ackley, Iowa, passed away April 18, 2005, at the
Dumont Care Center in Dumont, Iowa. She was born May 10, 1916, in Butler
County, Iowa to Earl and Cora (Meyer) Schlampp. Violet graduated from
Dumont High School in 1934. She was married to Fred Bruns on February
20, 1940, in Dumont, Iowa. Violet worked as a farm wife and was a member
of New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. She loved fishing and
always managed to catch the biggest fish, she enjoyed traveling, farming
and spending time with her grandchildren and great grand-children.
Violet is survived by her son Russell & wife Norah Bruns of Waverly, son
Roger Bruns of Dumont, son Keith Bruns of Ackley, sister Pearl and
husband Tony Schneiderman of Thornton, six grandchildren and five great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband,
daughter-in-law Rosalie and sister Muriel Schlampp. Funeral services
were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at the New Hope
United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Jay Amundson officiating.
Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the
soloist, Mark Gerdes. The usher was Robert Barber and pallbearers were
Scott Bruns, Tim Bruns, Larry Meyer, Lyle Meyer, Derold Meyer and Kurt
Hempen. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
John Dale Van Heiden

Dale Van Heiden, age 81, of Windsor Care Center, Cedar Falls, and
formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of John and Jennie Bruns
Van Heiden on November 27, 1923, in Pleasant Valley Township, near
Aplington in Grundy County, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Peter
Evangelist and Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. He received his
education in Pleasant Valley #4 school one mile from his home. John was
united in marriage with Luella Elizabeth Frey on November 30, 1942 at
the First Reformed Church parsonage in Aplington, Iowa. The couple made
their home on the family farm near Buck Grove. In 1960, they moved and
farmed north of Parkersburg where they lived for 19 years. At that time,
they moved back to the family farm. In 1997, they retired and moved to
their present home in Aplington. John attended First Reformed Church in
Aplington. Farming was his pride and joy. He also enjoyed gospel music
and vacationing in Branson, Missouri. John died Monday, April 11, 2005,
at Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa, of natural
causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Duane Van
Heiden in 1994; three brothers, Bert, Sam and Ben Van Heiden and one
sister, Anna Willems. John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Luella
Van Heiden of Aplington, Iowa; two daughters, Betty (Steve) Adelmund,
Parkersburg, Iowa and Janet (Randy) Patterson, Parkersburg, Iowa; one
daughter-in-law, Donna Rostad; six grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one sister, Alice Vietor,
Parkersburg, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., April 13,
2005 at the First Reformed Church Aplington, Iowa with Pastor Harlan
DeJong officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Special Music was “Old
Rugged Cross by Rebecca Meester. Vocalists Randy Aalderks and Willie
Aalderks sang “I Can Only Imagine” and “How Great Thou Art”.
Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “What a Friend We Have In
Jesus”. Casketbearers were Richard Van Heiden, Roger Van Heiden, Darrell
Sents, Darwin Sents, Alvin Miller and Dan Frey. Interment was in
Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel,
Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to
the family.
Marjorie Heft

Memorial services for Marjorie Heft, 86, of Marble Rock, were held
Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at the United Methodist Church, Marble Rock
with Pastor Kenneth Kent officiating. Inurnment was in the Hillside
Cemetery, Marble Rock. Marjorie Clark was born May 2, 1918, at Villard,
Minnesota, a daughter of Nathan and Jennie Bell (Kreider) Clark, and
died Friday, April 15, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit
in Mason City. She received her education in the Villard schools
graduating in1936. On May 3,1938 she was united in marriage to Kenneth
J. Heft in Mason City. They farmed in the Dougherty and Marble Rock area
until his death on December 16,1978. The following year she moved into
town. Marjorie was a member of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church.
Her interests included collecting lamps and Hummel figurines. Living
family members include her daughter Pat (William) Tarr of Clear Lake,
two sons: Robert (Kathleen) Heft of Malwaukee, WI, Richard (Vickie) Heft
of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and
three great great grandchildren; one sister: Lila LeCount of Wadena, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth J. Heft, grandson,
Terrance Heft, parents, one sister Mary Gerdes, and two brothers: Lloyd
Clark and George Clark. Those planning an expression of sympathy may
direct memorials to Hospice of North Iowa in care of the family.
Lester Duane Alberts

Lester Duane Alberts, 76, of Allison, Iowa passed away April 16, 2005,
at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. He was born September
4, 1928, in rural Parkersburg, Iowa, to Jake and Sara (Rindels) Alberts.
Lester attended school in rural Parkersburg. He was married to Grace
Mulder on November 27, 1949, in the United Methodist Church in New
Hartford, Iowa. He farmed and raised cattle in Jefferson Township and
moved to his present home in Allison in 1986. Lester worked off the farm
over the years at Clay Equipment in Waterloo, driving a school bus for
Allison-Bristow and retiring from Hawkeye Corrugated Box in Cedar Falls.
Lester was a past member of the United Presbyterian Church in rural
Clarksville and a present member of the Untied Church of Christ in
Allison. Lester was a 4-H leader and retired in 1987 after 24 years. He
shared his knowledge of cattle with club members and after retirement
stayed active giving his grandchildren advise and support. Nothing gave
Lester more pleasure than to watch his grandchildren participate in
school activities. He enjoyed watching them play over the years at
Aplington, Aplington-Parkersburg, Allison-Bristow, and North Butler.
Lester is survived by his children. His two sons, Kenneth G. Alberts and
his wife, Karen, and Michael D. Alberts and his wife, Becky, both of
Allison. His daughter, Lanae Kramer and her husband, Mark of Aplington.
His eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; his three sisters,
Genevieve Boelman of Cedar Falls, Joann Beurer of Cedar Falls and
Lynette Hild of LaPorte City. Lester is preceded in death by his
parents, his wife, Grace Alberts in 1997, and his brother, Roy Alberts
in 2000. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 19,
2005 at the Allison United Church of Christ with Rev. Ralph Wedeking
officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Cecil
Radcliffe accompanying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were
Tyler Alberts, Eric Alberts, Justin Hoeft, Kevin Alberts, Chad Jensen,
Jeremy Alberts and Kenneth Kramer. Honorary pallbearers were Larry
Pruisner, Jerry Heller, Lawrence Johnson, Jerry Aukes, Gordon Heath and
Vernon Leerhoff. Final resting place was in the Oak Hill Cemetery,
Parkersburg, Iowa with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
