Dean Claire Tweed

Funeral service for Dean Claire Tweed, 77, Marble Rock, were held Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the Methodist Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Ken Kent officiating, with burial in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Dean Tweed was born November 8, 1927 on a farm near Fertile, in Worth County, a son of Harry (Joe) Joseph and Opal (Hovland) Tweed and died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at his home in Marble Rock after a short battle with cancer. He received his education in Lake Mills. Went on to serve in the Army in WW II.. On February 19, 1950 he was united in marriage to Iris Judene Heyer in Woden. To this union six children were born. He was a 50 year member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. They lived in Hampton, Greene, then Marble Rock. Many hours were spent in the Tweedybird camper school bus as the family was growing up. During this time Dean worked for Klassi Hardware repairing TV’s and radios. He later worked with Klassi Ford Motor, where one of his specialties was keeping the 57 thru 59 Ford Skyliner retractable hardtop convertibles working smoothly. Dean was self employed as a ‘jack of all trades and master of many’. Electrician, mechanic, carpentry, plumbing were a few of his talents. Then he went into business for himself in Marble Rock as “Dean’s Radio & TV” selling new televisions and home repair of TV’s and radios. He was remembered for bringing a TV to the Marble Rock school so the students could watch John Glenn orbit the earth. He was a good communicator and always had a story to tell to anyone that would listen. Dean also remodeled homes and farm buildings and kept several Marble Rock and Dougherty farmers operations running smoothly with his innovative repairs. He retired in 1989 after a fall in Lake Mills that limited his physical abilities. Dean and Iris also ran the Laundry of ID in Marble Rock until April, 2005, when he was diagnosed with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Iris of Marble Rock; two sons: Randy Tweed of Houston, Texas and Terry (Sue) Tweed of Woden; two daughters: Coralyn (Tom) Engels and LeAnn (Marty) Ginther of Rockford; son-in-law: Richard and his wife, Barb Weiner of Nora Springs and daughter-in-law: Cyndy and her husband, Vernon Rankin of Cheyenne, Wyoming; three sisters: Yvonne Wiele and Dorothy Alden of Dougherty, Bonnie DeWall of Mason City; three brothers: Ray (Barb) Tweed of Lake Mills, Robert (Lib) Tweed of Cold Springs, Minnesota, Michael (Jeanine) Tweed of Thompson; and brother-in-law, Russell and his wife, Kay Heyer of McWonago, Wisconsin; twenty three grandchildren: Scott Tweed, Michelle (Jeremy) Michels, Michael (Ashley) Tweed, Stephanie Tweed, Dustin, Robert and Kelli Jo Weiner, Samuel Booth, Charlie Weiner, Christina, Joseph, Kathy, Anthony, Elizabeth and Nathaniel Engels, Colter, Cory and Larissa Ginther, Tera, Jennifer, Jamie, Chelsea and Matthew Tweed; and four great grandchildren: Jonathan Mechels, Brayden Tweed, Caedmon Mechels and Sara Tweed; and faithful dog, Prince. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter: Judene Kay (Tweed) Weiner, 1988, wife of Richard Weiner; son: Gary Lynn Tweed, 1993, husband of Cyndy Rankin; two brothers DeWard and Don Tweed; and two sisters: Leona Thompson and Gayle Bolton. Wava Faith Voss

Wava Faith Voss, 98, formerly of Cedar Falls, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at the Waverly Health Center. She was born July 6, 1907 in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Charlotte (Doty) Forry. She graduated from Clarksville High School and attended the University of Iowa. She married Reinhard C. Voss on November 10, 1929, in Clarksville. He died December 5, 1959. To this union, three children were born: Vonnelle (Sue) I. Tippett (Jim) of LaPorte City; Richard J. (Dick) Voss (deceased), and Reinhard C. (Tub) Voss (deceased). After raising her family and the death of her husband, Wava took on several interests which she did for many years. She sewed and altered clothing for many people. She enjoyed creating things with her hands and could often be found sitting at her kitchen table crocheting, needle pointing, reading her Bible or writing. She wrote many “letters to the editor” that were published in booth the Waterloo and the Cedar Falls Record. She enjoyed watching young children and kept in touch with many of them throughout their lives. She loved gardening and always had an abundance of flowers and vegetables in the summer time. When friends and family came to visit they would congregate in her kitchen and enjoy her cooking beneath a mural on her wall which stated, “No matter where I serve my guests it seems they like my kitchen best,” and that they did. She baked and decorated wedding cakes, making her children’s wedding cakes and even some of her grandchildren’s. She traveled around the world and brought home trinkets of her travels for her friends and family to enjoy. During her later years, she moved from her home in Cedar Falls to her daughter’s home in LaPorte City, where she stayed for a number of years. The past two years, she has lived at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. While living in Clarksville, she has been visited by friends and family alike and has most recently celebrated her 98th birthday there. One special friend, Harriet Forry visited with and helped her several times each week which was a blessing and made life much more enjoyable for her. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reinhard; her two sons, Richard and Reinhard; her sisters, Martha Ciavarelli and Lela Biekert; and a brother, Nathan Forry. Surviving is her daughter, Vonnelle of LaPorte City; her twin brothers, Lester (Bob) Forry and Chester (Buster) Forry (Harriet), both of Clarksville; her daughter-in-law, Beverly Voss-Hummel of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Kathy Miller (Greg) of Cedar Falls, Kelly Sagert of Center Point, Kim Cross (Kevin) of Cedar Falls, Janice Sells (Mike) of LaPorte City, Sandra Tippett of Garland, Texas, and Ronald Tippett (Cindy) of Vinton; twelve great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Harriet Forry. Funeral services were held Friday, July 22, 2005, at St. John American Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with Rev. Doug Rokke, American Lutheran Church, LaPorte City, officiating. The organist was Delpha Brockmeyer. Casket bearers were Kevin Cross, Mike Sells, Ronald Tippett, Gage Sagert, Steven Foster, and Greg Miller. Interment was in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Richardson Service, Cedar Falls, was in charge of arrangements.


Lee Ann Voss

Lee Ann Voss, 69, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, July 16, 2005 due to injuries received in a two vehicle automobile accident north of Cherokee. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 20th, at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with Pastor Larry Ostercamp officiating. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery, north of Meriden, Iowa. She was born on June 1, 1936 at Cherokee, Iowa. She was raised by Gerhard & Edith (Sangwin) Anderson. She graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School and later graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1973 with a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology. She was married to Robert Patterson. She later married Roger Voss on March 18, 1977 in Waverly, Iowa. She had lived in Cherokee since 1990, prior to this in Clarksville and Waverly, Iowa and was originally from Cherokee County. She was a member of the Cherokee Ridge Runners and the Cherokee Community Theatre. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roger on March 7, 1999, one brother Bob Morgan, one sister Mary Flannigan and her special companion Don Malcolm. She is survived by three sons and one daughter: Richard R. Patterson and his wife Marilyn of Moline, Illinois; Donald D. Patterson and his wife Lilly of Scottsdale, Arizona; Robert L. Patterson and his wife Sue of McKinney, Texas; Michelle Ann Rector of Sioux City, Iowa; 12 grandsons: Joshua, Reed, Drew, Michael, James, Dillon, Ryan, Garrett and Nick Patterson, Justin and Christopher Reichert and Daniel Rector; 1 great-granddaughter Justus Reichert. Boothby Funeral Home, Cherokee, was in charge of arrangements.


Henry C. Tuitjer

A Private Funeral service for Henry C. Tuitjer, 83, formerly of Greene, was held Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene. Burial was in the Allison Cemetery. Henry Cornelius Tuitjer was born March 23, 1922 in rural Allison, a son of Theodore and Carrie Amelia (Dohlman) Tuitjer and died Thurday, July 21, 2005 at the Hampton Care Center, Hampton. Henry received his education in the Norton Corners Country School. He remained a bachelor dedicating his life in service to others. Henry worked in Parkersburg before going to Eldora to work for the Civilian Conservation Corp. for two years. He made his home with family members until moving to Greene. In Greene “Hank” became well known through out the community as the man to call when you had a “problem”. “Hank” was a very capable and willing handy man. He was extremely well known among the elderly who depended upon him for many different kinds of assistance. Henry’s final years were spent in the Liebe Care Center in Greene and finally in the Alzheimer Unit at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton. Henry is survived by three sisters: Rena Smoot of Clarksville, Dorothy Tack of Greene, and Jessie Jansen of Parkersburg; two brothers: Theodore“Teddy”(Faye) Tuitjer of Parkersburg and Raymond “Pete”(Sandy) Tuitjer of Waverly, sisters-in- law: Hilda Tuitjer of Allison, Ann Tuitjer of Parkersburg; brother-in-law: Edward Johnson of Fairmont, Minnesota along with several nieces, nephews and a whole host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters: Anna Freebury, Mary Henricks, Florence Johnson, Betty Balvanz; two brothers: Emie, George; three siblings in infancy: Jessie, Mary and Raymond; bothers-in-law: Charles Thompson, John Freebury, Ronald Henricks, Herbert Smoot, Darrell Tack, Kenneth Jansen; Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Henry Tuitjer Memorial Fund in care of the family.
Monte R. Grant

Monte R. Grant passed away on July 19, 2005, from complications due to emphazema, at The Taylor House, in Des Moines, Iowa. Monte was born on May 15, 2005, to Freida and Kenneth Grant, in Clarksville, IA. He serve in the U.S. Army for 2 years, then went on to attend the University of Iowa, were he became a loyal Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He then graduated from Drake University, and went on to teach for several years. Monte enjoyed people meeting people, which is what led him drive a cab for many years. Monte enjoyed playing bridge and played in many tournaments around the Midwest. Monte was also an avid Chicago White Sox fan. Monte Grant will be cremated and no services are planned for him at this time. Thanks to all who knew and became friends with Monte


Ruth L. Kiefer

Services for Ruth L. Kiefer, 94,of Greene, were held Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating, with burial in Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Ruth Boyd was born May 30, 1911 in Bennezette Township, Butler County, near Aredale, a daughter of Robert and Sarah (Courtney) Boyd and died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Liebe Care Center in Greene. She attended country school and graduated from Aredale HighSchool in 1930. She worked in several homes in the Greene and Aredale areas, and for 5 years at the Crabtree Café in Greene. She played kittenball and was on Greene and Aredale teams during summers. Ruth married Lewis Kiefer in 1940 and they farmed near Aredale, Bristow and Osage. They built a home on the Shellrock River northwest of Greene, near Gates Bridge in 1957, where they lived until her husband passed away in 1990. She then moved into Greene. She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Cindy Kiefer of Mason City; five grandchildren: Kevin Kiefer of Charles City, Kimberly Blair of Burlington, Roberta Blanchard of Florida, Russell Kiefer of Florida and Shawn Rose of Denison, Iowa; three step grandchildren: Dale Nelson of Eagle Grove, Christy Hewitt of Mason City and Stefanie Tidemanson of St. Ansgar, and thirteen great grandchildren: Greg, Taralin, David and Darrick Blair; Tony and Samantha Blanchard; Christian Kiefer; Jordon, Joey and Makayla Nelson; Jessie Hewitt and Savanna and Stephen Tidemanson. Two sisters: Roberta Barth of Greene and Dorothy Roccanti of Massachusetts and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, James, her parents, one brother, Burt and four sisters: Elsie Merrill, Esther Elliott, Hazel Kielman and Mabel Majewski, one sister-in-law and three brothers-in-law. Marjorie “Marje” Ann Holtkamp

Marjorie “Marje” Ann Holtkamp, 82, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Monday, July 18, 2005, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center. Marje was born on April 23, 1923, in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of William Roy and Grace (Perrin) Donaldson. She attended school in Clarksville, graduating from Clarksville High School in 1940. Following high School , Marje attended Gates Business College, graduating in 1942. Marje began working for Bell Telephone after completing business college. On June 17, 1944, Marje was united in marriage to Barney Holtkamp in New York City, New York. The couple made their home on the Naval Air Base in Norfolk, Virginia, until the end of World War II. The couple moved back to Shell Rock after the war and have resided there since. Marje was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading, knitting, gardening, baking and especially spending time with her family and friends. Marje is survived by her husband, Barney of Shell Rock; one daughter, Jeanne Jones and her husband Keith of Cedar Falls; one son, Mark Holtkamp and his wife Virginia of Grundy Center; two grandchildren, Samantha Holtkamp and Cassandra Holtkamp. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Dorothy Blake, Ruth Carpenter, Charlotte Dehm; and by one brother, Bill Donaldson. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 22, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. at Faith Lutheran Church, Shell Rock, with Rev. Steven D. McGinley officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock

Jakie Wessels, Jr., 85, of Dumont, died on Monday, July 25, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Jakie was born on November 22, 1919, in Butler Center, Iowa, the son of Jake and Hattie Knevel Wessels, Sr. He was a veteran of the Army, having served from 1941-1945. Jakie married Flavia Stock on July 13, 1962, in Dumont, Iowa. Survivors include: wife of Dumont; one daughter, Karla R. Wessels of Tama; three granddaughters, Doreen (Randy) Morrow of Millersburg, Iowa, Veronica Viet (Chris) Uthe of Dumont, Iowa, and Sandra (Shawn) Donovan of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marge (Don) Schemmel of Cedar Falls. Preceded in death by: parents; one brother, Don; and one sister, Lorraine Jones. Memorial Services will be at a later date. The Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball Ave in Waterloo is in charge of arrangements. Delmar C. Foster

Funeral services for Delmar C. Foster, 69, of 80 Pebble Creek Ct., Mason City, formerly of Greene, were held Friday, July 29, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Delmar Clayton Foster was born March 30, 1936 in Iowa Falls a son of Lowell Delmar and Ruby Fern (Cunningham) Foster, and died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. In 1938 the family moved to Spirit Lake and in 1940 moved to Jesup where Delmar began his schooling. In 1945 the family settled in rural Greene where Delmar attended rural schools, and graduated from the Greene High School in 1954. Delmar was united in marriage to Carol Ann Townsley on October 29, 1955 at the Presbyterian Manse in Greene. He worked for T & M Service Station and in 1959 began working for Duane Smith as a farmhand. He worked for the Oliver Tractor Works in Charles City, during which he worked part-time for Greene Farm Equipment Co. In 1986 he became employed as custodian at the Greene Elementary School. Delmar was meticulous and took great pride in his work, going above and beyond what was expected of him. Delmar was seriously injured in a bicycle accident on October 10, 1989. Despite the health issues that followed, Delmar’s greatest attribute, was his wonderful sense of humor, allowed him to continue pursuing life in a positive nature. Often times he could be seen riding his motorized wheel chair around town to see what was going on. Delmar and Carol enjoyed their home over looking the Round Grove Golf and Country Club; selling it to move to Mason City where Delmar could receive optimal medical care. His other interests included motorcycles and going to stock car races. Delmar was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene and had served on the Board of Trustees. Those thankful for his life include his loving wife: Carol, and his children, Doug (Judy) Foster, Brad (Paulette) Foster all of Mason City; six grandchildren: Steven (Lisa) Foster, Heather (Beau) Stubbe, Eric Foster, Jacob Foster, Ethan Foster, Seth Alan Foster, and one great grandchild: Jade Stubbe; his mother: Ruby Foster of Greene; two brothers: Dallas (Sally) Foster of Greene, Lloyd (Linda) Foster of Omak, WA; and several nieces and nephews. Marlys Darlene Kramer

Marlys Darlene Kramer, age 73, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born June 24, 1932, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Rudolph and Ruby (Renken) Ostendorf. She grew up on a farm in rural Butler County, Iowa, near Aplington. Marlys received her education and graduated from the Aplington High School in 1952. Marlys was united in marriage with Harold Kramer on November 14, 1964, at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg. They made their home and remained living throughout their marriage in Parkersburg. Marlys had various jobs through the years including working at Highway 20 Café and she especially enjoyed doing social work with community service. Marlys was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, where she was active in women’s organizations and helped with Vacation Bible School. She loved doing various crafts and sewing quilts. Marlys died Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at the Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents. Marlys is survived by her husband, Harold Kramer of Parkersburg; two brothers, Wayne (Eleanor) Ostendorf of Ames, Iowa and LeRoy (Janice) Ostendorf of Ackley, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; special friends: and special neighbors, Marvin and Thelma Flesner and Cindy (Terry) Asche. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2005 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Daniel J. Larson officiating. Organist was Bernita Nicklaus. Congregational hymns were “Rock of Ages”, “Abide With Me” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”. Honorary Casketbearers were Mark Asche, Mike Asche and Tara Dutka. Casketbearers were Marvin Flesner, Terry Asche, Ron DeBoer, Dennis Hippen, Gordon Hippen and Cleve Wilson. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Bertilda Freese

Bertilda Freese, age 85, of Aplington, Iowa, was born February 25, 1920, the daughter of Bert and Tillie Alberts Miller in Aplington, Iowa. She received her education in rural Aplington. Bertilda Miller was united in marriage with Koert Freese on December 30, 1938, in the parsonage of the Bethel Reformed Church in rural Aplington. They lived for a short time in Aplington after their marriage. They then moved to a farm north of Aplington. They moved to their present home in Aplington, in 1956, after Koert retired from farming. Along with being a home maker and a farm wife, Bertilda sold Avon products for nearly 25 years until she retired in 1989. Bertilda was a life-long member of Bethel Reformed Church and was very active in the church in the past. She enjoyed bowling and competing in bowling league, traveling, especially fishing trips to Minnesota, and winter trips to the Morningside RV Park in San Juan, Texas. She also enjoyed playing the piano and singing. Bertilda was very fond of all her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and loved them very much. Bertilda died Monday, July 25, 2005, at Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant twin daughters; five sisters, Cornelia Jungling, Henrietta Mennen, Madeline Cordes, Carrie Bertram and Marion Cordes; and one brother, Merle Miller. She is survived by her husband of over 65 years, Koert Freese, of Aplington, Iowa; three brothers, Delbert (Delores) Miller, John (Joan) Miller, and Daniel Miller all of Aplington, Iowa; three sisters, Mildred (Chris) Ridder, Frances (Ted) Stubbe, and Phyllis (William) Aalderks, all of Aplington, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Henry Jungling of Aplington, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Hannah Miller of Parkersburg, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 30, 2005 at Bethel Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Scott Summer officiating. Organist was Belva Schipper. Vocalist Randy Aalderks sang “After All” and “He Touched Me”. Congregational Hymns were “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “Amazing Grace”. Casketbearers were Larry Bertram, Jim Ridder, Paul Stubbe, Galen Miller, Jeff Miller, and Michael Miller. Flower Committee was Martha Johnson and Sandy Sessler. Interment was in Bethel Reformed Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Elizabeth Ann Sturdevant Ward Newman

Elizabeth Ann Sturdevant Ward Newman, 78 year old Burley, Idaho, resident died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at Rosetta Assisted Living Center in Burley. She was born September 19, 1926, in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Leon Cecil and Elizabeth Ann Thompson Sturdevant. She married Wallace Arthur Ward of Shell Rock, Iowa. She later married Terry Newman on October 14, 1977, in Elko, Nevada. Betty worked for the J.R. Simplot Company for fifteen years. She was a member of the Jobs Daughters and in 2000 she joined the LDS Church. She enjoyed gardening and antique bells. Survivors include seven children, Cecil Ward of Buhl, Lynn Ward of Boise, Idaho, Bruce Ward of Missouri, Lance Ward of Mexico, Terry Ward of Newport, Oregon, Steve Ward of Roseburg, Oregon, and Kevin Ward of Vancouver, Washington; two step-sons, Craig Stooksberry and Gary Newman; eighteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; one brother, and one sister, Jo. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at the Payne Memorial Chapel in Burley with Bishop Gary Johnson officiating. Payne Memorial Chapel, Burley, was in charge of arrangements.

Zachary Dale Hildebrand was born November 28, 1983 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City a son of Dale Lyle and Vickie Sue (Schipper) Hildebrand, and died Friday, July 29, 2005, in Allison. He was baptized and confirmed a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene where he helped teach Sunday School. Zachary received his education in the Greene and RRMR Community School Districts. He was also involved in the Greene Area Teen Betterment Council, and Rice Tae Kwon Do in Charles City for eleven years, where he was awarded 1st Grade Recommend Red Belt. Zachary was employed at APAC Customer Services in Mason City and Waterloo. He also worked for Caseys General Store in Mason City and Bennigan’s and Best Western Hotel of Clear Lake. He is survived by his mother: Vickie (Jeff Winters) Hildebrand, father: Dale (Jane) Hildebrand of Waterloo, his brother: Tanner of Greene; maternal grandmother Janet Schipper of Greene, paternal grandparents: Edward and Millie Hildebrand of Waterloo, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sarah Hadden Kyhl, age 52, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born November 19, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Howard and Carolyn (Marsh) Shaw. She received her education and graduated from the Oak Park River Forest High School in 1970. She graduated from the Purdue University in 1975 with a degree in Psychology. Sarah was united in marriage with Kevin Kyhl on August 8, 1981, in Loveland, Colorado. She was a Training Manager at Foxmoor Clothing from 1975 until 1982. She owned and operated Sarah Designer Fabrics from 1978 to 1984. She also owned Deer Mountain Graphics from 1984 to 1995 and helped run Tamarak from 1983 to 1994. They made their home in Loveland until they moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado in 1983. Kevin, Sarah and kids moved to Parkersburg in 1995, where she enjoyed being a homemaker and helped run Kyhlwood. Sarah was a member of the United Methodist Church in Parkersburg and served as a financial secretary. She was a loving wife and mother who was very caring for her family. Through the years she loved being a part of her children’s activities. She enjoyed going to horse shows and watching soccer games with them. She especially enjoyed horses and taking care of her pets. Sarah died Friday, July 29, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, of complications of Leukemia. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Shaw. Sarah is survived by her husband, Kevin Kyhl of Parkersburg, Iowa; two daughters, Alissa Kyhl of Kansas City, Kansas and Jenna Kyhl of Illinois Wesleyan University; one son, Casey Kyhl at home; her father, Howard (Connie) Shaw of Beulah, Michigan; her mother, Carolyn Shaw of Mahomet, Illinois; two brothers, Tom (Erin) Shaw of Houston, Texas and Steve (Jill) Shaw of Antioch, Illinois; and one sister, Peg (Al) Shaw-Friederich of Mahomet, Illinois. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at the Parkersburg United Methodist Church in Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Betsy Piette officiating. Organist was Anna Mae Schnucker. Soloist Stan Thompson sang “Watch the Lamb”. Congregational Hymns were “As the Dear” and “On Eagles Wings”. Casketbearers were Miles Humphrey, Mike Hosch, Ed Sivola, Pat McCord, Brody Bertram and Scott Depford. Interment was in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Parkersburg Methodist Church, the Leukemia Society or the Parkersburg Fitness Center.
Daniel F. Ballard

A Funeral Mass for Daniel F. Ballard, 58, of 320 South Main Street, Greene will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greene with military honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, where there will be a Rosary Service at 5 p.m. conducted by the Knights of Columbus followed by a Scriptural Wake service. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Tuesday.** Daniel Fredrick Ballard was born July 7, 1947 at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a son of Earnie Fredrick and Veronica Florence (Heck) Ballard, and died Thursday July 28, 2005 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester. He received his education and graduated from the Immaculate Conception School in Charles City in 1966. He attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City where he met Brenda Marsh. Dan entered the United States Navy in July 1968 where he underwent training at Great Lakes Naval Station. On May 2, 1970, Dan and Brenda were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. They relocated to Portsmouth, VA where he was stationed on the USS Columbus CG-12. He later served on the USS John F. Kennedy CVA-67, USS Francis Marion LPA-249, USS Yellowstone AD-41, and USS Vulcan AR-5. At various times he served with the SIMA (Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity), and Shore Patrol. Following his retirement on October 31, 1988, he and his family returned to Greene in 1991 where they made their home. He was currently employed at Menards in Mason City. He was an active member of the Greene Volunteer Fire Department where he was a certified Fire Inspector, Fire Fighter I, Haz-Mat Ops Level, and Weather Spotter. Daniel was also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Greene, Fr. John Naumann Council of the Knights of Columbus, and Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. He will be sadly missed by his wife Brenda of Greene; two daughters: Michele (James) Anderson of Greene, Kendra (Douglas) Mennen of Mason City; 5 ½ grandchildren: Elizabeth, Thomas Daniel, Heather, Nick, Ben, and a baby due in the fall; and a special family friend Ellen Ragland; his mother: Veronica “Ronnie” Ballard of Floyd; three sisters: Barb (John) Pint of Mitchell, Bonnie (Larry) Pint of Osage, Linda (Dave) Hennagir of Griffith, IN and many nieces and nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his father Earnie Ballard on October 11,1973, and an infant grandchild in 2002. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Daniel F. Funeral Services for Olive L. Henline, 92, formerly Greene were held Saturday, August 6, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Olive L. Grusy was born June 8, 1913 in Paulding, Ohio a daughter of William and Lena (Stoller) Grusy and died Tuesday August 2, 2005 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. Olive was united in Marriage to Roy Henline, October 19, 1941 in Eureka, Illinois. In 1944 they moved to Greene where they owned and operated and machine and welding shop for many years. She was very active in the life of the community having been a member Ladies Bowling league, and Sportsman’s Club. She became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene on September 27, 1950 and was a member of the Presbyterian Women and Good Cheer Circle. Ollie enjoyed the outdoors especially spending time in her garden and canning. She loved cooking and especially enjoyed baking cookies for the neighborhood kids. She and her husband spent many hours fishing on the Shell Rock River. Ollie had a soft spot for animals especially cats and dogs. She loved to sing and dance. She was a generous, loving Aunt, sister and friend who showered people with homemade crocheted and ceramic creations. Her memory will live on in our hearts forever. She is survived by three brothers; Robert, Alf Grusy both of Eureka, Illinois and William (Hazel) Grusy of Georgetown, Tx; two sisters: Viola (Tom) White of Tampa, Fla, Virginia Jarnagan of Cedar Rapids. One local niece, Marilyn Scholle of Charles City, and many more neices and nephews. Two especially close friends are Tim and Kathy Gansen of Greene. She is preceded in death by her husband Roy on January 29, 2000, her parents, three brothers and three sisters. Naomi Louise McGeachy

Naomi Louise McGeachy, 82, of Bristow, Iowa, passed away August 6, 2005 at the Dumont Wellness Center of natural causes. She was born September 6, 1922, in Xenia, Illinois, to Glen and Stella Gibson. She was baptized and became a member of the McCabe Chapel in rural Flora, Illinois. Naomi attended Florena grade school and Flora high school in Flora, Illinois. At the age of 14, she moved with her family to De Kalb, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Darrell Edward McGeachy, April 17, 1942, in Stanwood, Iowa. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids. They later moved to Hampton in 1945. To this union a son, Dennis Edward, was born November 21, 1945 in Hampton. Naomi was a Bristow City Council member for 15 years. She was an accomplished seamstress and operated an upholstery business for 14 years. She also worked at Turner Microphone in Cedar Rapids and Maytag Company in Hampton. She loved working in the fields helping her husband farm. She is survived by her grandson Jeffrey Scott (Teri Lynn) McGeachy of N. Las Vegas, Nevada, great grandson Conner Scott McGeachy of N. Las Vegas, Nevada, and her sister Mary Pantilla of De Kalb, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents Glen and Stella, husband Darrell, and son Dennis. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Larry Cornwell, Brad Beadle, Ross Zimmerman, Ron Zimmerman, Wayne Zimmerman and Rex Zimmerman. Final resting place was in the Oak Hill Cemetery rural Bristow, Iowa.

Bernard R. Buchholz (Barney)

Bernard R. Buchholz (Barney), born in Glenwood, Minnesota in 1922, died in his home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on August 9, 2005. Barney grew up in Clarksville, Iowa and attended Wartburg College, in Waverly, Iowa. He joined the Army during WWII, and was selected to be part of the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) at William and Mary College in Virginia. Following this program, he was assigned to the 28th Fighter Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Force in Panama. After the war, Barney lived in Denver, Colorado and graduated from the University of Denver, Daniels College of Business. Following graduation, he was general manager of Daniels and Fisher Department store in downtown Denver. Early in the space program Barney joined the Martin Marietta Corporation. In 1973 he transferred to the Martin Marietta’s Michoud Facility in New Orleans and was the Materials Manager for the Space Shuttle external tank project. He retired in Slidell, LA in 1986 after 26 years of service with the company. Barney was preceded in death by his wife LaVon Buchholz, as well as four brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, BenAlice G. Buchholz, three children, Douglas Buchholz of Slidell, La., Lance Buchholz of Biloxi, MS, and Ruselle Buchholz Guice of Denver, CO. His family also includes step children, Leigh Farron Buckner of Jackson, MS and Ashley Farron McWilliams of Atlanta, GL, as well as seven grand children. He is also survived by his brother Marvin Buchholz of Heidleburg, Germany, and two sisters, Madelyn Yarcho of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Sandra Rodenbeck of Shell Rock, Iowa. A Memorial Service was held in his church home, Court Street United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, MS on Friday, August 12 at 3:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in his name at Court Street United Methodist Church, 609 Southern Avenue, Hattiesburg, MS 39401.


Lois Yeager

Lois Yeager passed away July 29, 2005. She was a resident of Summerville, South Carolina. Lois was the daughter of the late Clayton and Hilda (Miller) Brockway of Allison, IA. She is survived by four children: Two sons, Lee Morrow of Tennessee and Daniel Yeager of California, two daughters: Darlene Gaskin of Moncks Corner, South Carolina and Debbie Waldren of Summerville; two sisters Mary (Brockway) Driggers of Summerville, South Carolina and Carrie (Brockway) Esposito of Allison and nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


Ethel Roberta Rieken

Ethel Roberta Rieken, 72, of Chester and previously of Edgewater, died August 4 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Rieken was born September 8, 1932, in Annapolis, attended Annapolis High school and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Annapolis Moose Lodge and enjoyed flea markets, antiques, shopping, yard sales, the outdoors and her family. In 1962 she married Henry J. Rieken who died in 1995. Survived by sisters-in-law, Annie Rieken, Rosie Riggins, Berniece Rieken, all of Allison, Virginia Rieken, Waverly; brothers-in-law Peter (Frederika) Rieken, Hayfield, MN, and Anton (Lorraine) Rieken, Marshalltown, IA and nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by brothers-in-law Albert, George, and Rieke Rieken, and Glen Riggins, and sister-in-law Mattie Rieken. Rosie Riggins and daughters Carol Loge, Billings, MT and Renita Brown, Big Sandy MT, attended the funeral in Annapolis, MD on Monday, August 8.


Larry Dean DeBower

Larry Dean DeBower, 69, of Charles City, died at home Sunday, August 7 of natural causes. He was born March 2, 1936 in Allison, son of Roy and Toni Bauman DeBower. On January 8, 1955, he married Janice Borel at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. Mr. DeBower graduated from Allison High School in 1954. He worked for 38 years as a machinist at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment Co. then for General Machine and Tool, Waverly for eight years. Survivors include: his wife, four sons, Kim (Laura) of Apopka, Fla., Randy (Barbara) and Dan (Christie), both of Charles City, and Tom (Kathy) of Carpenter; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Dallas (Janet) of Auburn, NY, and James (Dona) of Carroll; three sisters, Bernita (Kenneth) St. John and Delores (Ronald) Allan, both of Allison, and Bonnie (Frank) McKean of Cross Lake Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Helen DeBower of Allison. Preceded in death by a brother, Roger DeBower. Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 10 at Messiah Lutheran Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery, both in Charles City. Arlene W. Pierce 70, of Mason City, died Monday August 15, 2005, at her home. Funeral service were held August 19, 2005, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel with Pastor Thomas Healey officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Arlene W. Pierce Memorial Fund. Arlene W. Ulrich was born September 28, 1934 in Clarksville the daughter of Otto and Hulda (Nordman) Ulrich. Arlene graduated from Clarksville High School in 1953. She worked in many different nursing homes as an aide. She was united in marriage to Robert J. Pierce on February 16, 1972. Arlene was a long time sales representative for Avon. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Grandmothers Club, where she was a Grandma to many, C.B. Club and was an officer of the American Legion Auxiliary. Arlene had numerous hobbies. She is survived by her step children Jesse Pierce and his special friend Cherie McClemons, of Mason City, Bonnie and her husband Wilbert “Gene” McGee, of, Texas, sisters Helen Freese and Ella Christians, both of Clarksville, along with 13 nieces and nephews, and her dog Tasha. Arlene is preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, and step son Lester Pierce, one infant sister, one infant brother, and one infant granddaughter.


Anna Jacobs

Anna Jacobs, 89, of Allison, Iowa, passed away August 18, 2005, at her home in Allison. Anna was born November 16, 1915, in Butler County, Iowa near Parkersburg to Albert and Stena (Klassen) Kluiter. She received her education in rural schools in Butler County. She was united in marriage to Jacob Jacobs on February 23, 1937. They made their home on farms near Clarksville, Shell Rock, and then at Allison. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Greene, Iowa. At thirteen years of age, she received the Lord Jesus as Savior. She helped her husband with farm chores and taking care of her chickens and garden. She enjoyed cooking and baking, she especially still enjoyed baking her cookies. She is survived by her son Richard Jacobs and long time friend Lon Dreyer of Palm Springs, California, sister Carrie Kramer of Shell Rock, sister-in-law Dorothy Kluiter of Clarksville, sister-in-law Evelyn Kluiter of Shell Rock, sister-in-law Alma Jacobs of Allison and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, John, Sebo, Chris, Jerry, and Albert and one sister Minnie Harms. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Greene with Rev. Howard Reed officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Dian Hoelscher accompanying the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Jack Kluiter, Allen Kluiter, James Jacobs, Eugene Jacobs, RaDean Jacobs and LaVern Kluiter. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Ethel Roberta Rieken

Ethel Roberta Rieken, 72, of Chester and previously of Edgewater, died August 4 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Rieken was born September 8, 1932, in Annapolis, attended Annapolis High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Annapolis Moose Lodge and enjoyed flea markets, antiques, shopping, yard sales, the outdoors and her family. In 1962 she married Henry J. Rieken who died in 1995. The daughter of the late Ethel Phipps and Eugene Alsquith, she was the sister of the late Benjamin Alsquith and Pearl Pulliam. Surviving are two sons, Edward C. Rieken of Chester and Anthony G. Rieken of Edgewater; one sister Betty Dolan of Edgewater; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and sisters-in-law, Annie Rieken, Rosie Riggins, Berniece Rieken, all of Allison, Virginia Rieken, Waverly; brothers-in-law Peter (Frederika) Rieken, Hayfield, MN, and Anton (Lorraine) Rieken, Marshalltown, IA and nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by brothers-in-law Albert, George, and Rieke Rieken, and Glen Riggins, and sister-in-law Mattie Rieken. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. at the Hardesty Funeral Home in Annapolis, MD. on Monday, August 8, 2005. Burial was in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville. Rosie Riggins and daughters Carol Loge, Billings, MT and Renita Brown, Big Sandy MT, attended the funeral in Annapolis, MD on Monday, August 8.
