Lucille (Salge) Miller

Lucille (Salge) Miller, 89, of Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, formerly of Bristow, died December 13, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband Don.


Marvin Russell McBeain

Marvin Russell McBeain, age 85, of Guttenberg, IA, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

He was born the son of Alex and Clara (Nelson) McBeain on August 30, 1926 in Edsel North Dakota. For many years Marvin worked for Nordic Forge and for Peterson Construction. He later moved to Arizona where he worked for Leisure Homes until moving back to Iowa.

Marvin Proudly served his country in the United States Army in the Paratrooper division.

Marvin was a skilled woodworker and story teller. He truly loved his life on the island spending time fishing and visiting with family and friends.

Marvin is survived by his wife Rita; three children, Douglas (Tabitha) McBeain of North Platte, Neb, Debbi (Kevin) Shaw of Pulaski, Tenn., Sherrie (Ralph) Seago of Eagle CO; 9 grandchildren, Jeremy (Cheryl), Joseph (Angel), Joshua (Angela), Tyler McBeain, Corey (Heather), Kari and Casey Shaw, Ralph Jr. Eric (Lisa) Seago; 16 great grandchildren; sister Doretta Smith of Connel, WA; sister in law Darlene McBeain and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Duane and Steven; one sister and four brothers.

Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 207 S. 1st, Guttenberg, IA. There will be a celebration of life for Marvin on Father’s Day Weekend 2012. Condolences may be left at www.tueckeallyn.com.


C. Ann Olson

C. Ann Olson, 77, of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Ann was born on September 24, 1934, the daughter of Perry B. and Eunice Bell (Hull) Liebig in Frankfort, South Dakota. She began her elementary schooling in Frankfort until the family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1942, where Ann continued her education.

On April 18, 1953, she was united in marriage to Stanley L. Olson in Belle Fouche, South Dakota. The couple made their home on a farm northwest of Clarion, Iowa where Ann was a mom and homemaker.

In 1972, they sold the farm and moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where they owned and operated a motel. They later purchased a Culligan business in Allison.

The couple later divorced and Ann continued to live in Allison. She later moved north of Plainfield and in the early 1980’s, she moved to Waverly. Ann was employed at Wartburg College and Wal-Mart. She loved her dachshunds and kitties.

Survivors are her daughter, Vickie (Miltenberger) Olson of Mason City, Iowa; two sons, Steve (Donna) Olson of Nevada, Iowa and Scott Olson of Colorado Spring, Colorado; 6 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Geraldine (Bob) Moore of New Bern, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Genevieve “Genny” Liebig of Rapid City, South Dakota; kitty companion, Leo and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Daryl R. and P. James “Jim” Liebig; 3 sisters, Margaret “Lucelle” Liebig, Arlene “Jewel” L. Bach, Esther Eloyse L. McCormick; granddaughter, Amber Lynn Olson; nephews, Perry James Liebig and Roy Dean Liebig, and by a niece, Mary Christine Suddeth.

There was no visitation or services per Ann’s request her body has been cremated.

Melvin Johnson Yerkes

Memorial services for Melvin Johnson Yerkes, 82, of Greene, will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012, at St. Peter Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Hatcher offi ciating. Military Honors will be conducted by Tack-Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Private burial to be held at a later date.

Melvin Johnson Yerkes was born December 1, 1929, in Benton County, Iowa, a son of John and Geraldine (Johnson) Yerkes and passed away from complications of heart surgery on January 1, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. He received his education in the public schools and graduated from Urbana High School. He continued his education at the DeVry Technical College in Chicago where he studied electronics.

Melvin enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a Navy Radio/ Radar Operator from 1949 - 1953 during the Korean War. He worked for several places in Radio and Television service and repair in Iowa, before starting his own business, Mel’s Radio and T.V. in Greene in 1957.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Geater at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on June 30, 1957. The couple was blessed with five children. Melvin served his community for over 58 years as a member of the American Legion, served on the Butler County Conservation Board for over 20 years,was a Greene City Council Member, and served many years on the Greene Volunteer Fire Department. Mel loved to garden and was an Melvin Johnson Yerkes avid hunter and fisherman who spent many hours on his pond.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Greene, one daughter: June Yerkes of Charles City; three sons: Paul (Connie) Yerkes of Greene, Bruce (Tanya) Yerkes of Burnsville, Mark (Melodie) Yerkes of Greene; fi ve grandchildren: Samantha, Rachel, Casey, Carter, Bennett; three step-grandchildren: Mike, Matt, and Tiana; three great-grandchildren: Mason, Jordan, Gavin and one on the way; three brothers: Rex (Dorothy) Yerkes of Meansville, Ga, Richard (Lois) Yerkes of Walker, Gale Yerkes of Waterloo.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Kay, his brother, Spencer, one sister, Beth Leacox.

Kenton Ray (Kenny) Stoddard

Kenton Ray (Kenny) Stoddard, 65, of Waverly, Iowa, died Friday evening, January 6, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, Iowa from complications of cancer.

Kenton was born on November 25, 1946, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Harry Ellsworth and Dorothy I. (Waidelich) Stoddard. Kenton was baptized in Waverly at Rev. Harold Roschke’s home and confirmed in Shell Rock at Faith Lutheran Church. He attended school in Shell Rock and Waverly, graduating from the Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1965.

Kenton worked at Deike Implement from 1965-1966 and then entered the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. Following his discharge in 1968, Kenton returned to Shell Rock and continued working at Deike Implement until 1973. From 1973 until 2005, he worked for Koehring Cranes (Terex) for a total of 32 years.

On July 24, 1976, Kenton was united in marriage to Carol Jacobs at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. The couple made their home on their family farm, north of Waverly, which Ken purchased in 1971. Kenton was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly. He was also a member of the Waverly V.F.W. Post # 2208, Waverly American Legion Post #176, Cattlemen’s Association and Whitetails Unlimited.

In his spare time he enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, farming, traveling, working in his shop and visiting with everyone.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Stoddard of Waverly, Iowa; his son, Wayne Stoddard and his daughter, Gayle Stoddard both of Waverly; his mother, Dorothy Stoddard of Waverly; an aunt, uncle and a few cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, Harry on September 26, 1949.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Paul Schaedig officiating. Military honors were conducted by the American Legion Post #176 immediately following the funeral service. Burial will be held on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Horton Cemetery, rural Waverly. Dorothy M. Miller, 74, of Waterloo, died at her home Saturday, January 7, 2012.
Dorothy Mae Siems was born May 4, 1937, in Dumont, Iowa, the daughter of Ben and Pearl Bennett Siems. She graduated from Dumont High School in 1955 and Gates Business College.

Dorothy married Roland D. Miller September 7, 1955 in Dumont. She worked as attendance secretary at Central and Expo Schools, retiring in 1999 after 23 years. Always a good listener, there are many students that remember her as having made a difference in their lives.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Roland; son Brian (Kelli) Miller of Waterloo; daughter Deb (Mike Morris) Miller of Lansing, Iowa; son Steve (Deb) Miller of Jesup; four grandchildren: Jeff (Rachel) Miller, Matthew Miller, Emily Beres and Maggie (Matt) Gaudian; two step-grandchildren: Erich Carroll and Raychel Carroll; great-granddaughter Audrey Sue Gaudian; sister Beverly Wedeking of Nora Springs; sister Barbara (Robert) Presley of Oskaloosa; aunt Alice Arns of Waverly; brotherin- law Marvin (Sharon) Miller of Algona; brother-in-law LuVerne (Helen) Miller of Waterloo; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents.

Dorothy was an active member of Grace Reformed Church. She belonged to the Women’s Guild, for over 30 years cooked for the Wednesday Night Youth Group meals, was Sunday School secretary, served on the funeral lunch committee, and organized Prime Time and Sunday in the Park. She and Roland received a 30-Year Service plaque from Grace this last October.

Dorothy was also a member of the Red Hat Society and the American Legion Auxiliary and had been very active in her son’s Boy Scout Troop. She loved to read books and magazines as well as cooking and baking every day. She collected dozens of cookbooks and hundreds of recipes. The day would not be complete for Dorothy without drinking a Pepsi while working in her flower beds, basking in the sunshine and keeping an eye on her birds at the feeder. In late summer she would can Roland’s homegrown tomatoes.

She loved people – while her Mom was a resident at Parkview she would play the piano for the residents. She loved family get-togethers, always hosted her family’s annual garage picnic, and looked forward to the annual family car trip to Wisconsin to see the leaves in the fall. She loved to travel and was an avid collector of souvenir
t-shirts. Dorothy’s greatest hope is that the doctors will be able to use their experience in her cancer treatment to benefit others.

Services were held Friday January 13, 2012, at Grace Reformed Church in Waterloo. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont. Memorials may be directed to the church, Cedar Valley Hospice or American Cancer Society.

Frances Meinders Severs

Funeral services for 80 year old Frances Meinders Severs of Dumont will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont, Iowa. Friends may call Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, Iowa. Burial will take place at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, Iowa. Pastor Jeff Fiet will be officiating.

Frances Jurene Kuper was born on November 3, 1931 to Jerry and Marian Aukes Kuper on her Grandparents’ farm near Wellsburg in Grundy County. She, along with her parents, soon moved to a farm SE of Ackley. Frances was baptized on June 2, 1935 in the West Friesland Church. She accepted Jesus as her Savior in March 1946. She went home to her Savior on Sunday, January 8th in the comfort of her home and in her sleep.

She received her education in the country school of German #5 in Grundy County and 2 years of high school in Ackley. She then worked as a hired girl until she married Harold Meinders on November 6, 1949 at the Congregational Church in Osage.

Frances became a member of the Dumont Reformed Church in March 1950. Harold worked at the Dumont elevator and they soon started farming and having their family. Their marriage was blessed with 8 children. Along with happy times, they suffered heartbreak by losing their infant daughter Julie in a house fire in April 1967. After the fire, they picked up their family and moved to Osage and bought a farm from Jerry and Marian.

In November 1970, the family again suffered another loss when their son Lynn died in an auto accident. They bought the Drug Store in Dumont, more popularly known as “Meinders Variety” which Frances managed for 12 ½ years.

She was also involved with many community and church activities during her life in Dumont. Frances was united in marriage to Lester Severs in July 2006. They enjoyed spending time traveling marking trips to Hawaii, Germany, Texas and Arizona. They also enjoyed dancing at the Senior Citizens’ events. Lester and Frances recently moved to a different home in Hampton helping to ease her ability to be mobile.

Frances is survived by: her husband Lester Severs of Hampton, Iowa; six children: LaDonna (Larry) Estal of Reeds Springs Mo; Keith (Becky Jo) Meinders of Osage; Steve (Sue) Meinders of Kearney, Mo; Marcia (Randy) Lunn of Maplewood, Mo; Verla (Dale) Pecha of Dumont; and Mari (Kirk) Petersen of Hampton; 14 grandchildren: Jason(Tina) Estal; Matthew (Katie) Estal; Lorinda (Jason) Sedillo; Shanlyn (Adam) Doll; Judd Meinders; Jared (Sandy) and Alex Meinders; Wendy(Darren) Malcolm; Joshua Pecha; Rachel (Tyson) Burton; Dustin and Kelsey Schwab, Kendra and Hannah Petersen; 14 great-grandchildren: Haley, Lucas, Evan, Caleb, Nicholas, Joel, Madison, Jamison, Adam, Max, Brevin, Jaeley, Parker and Ava, plus 3 more due this year.

She is also survived by three brothers and one sister; Melvin (Vera) Kuper of Romeo IL; Beverly Hansen of Salem OR; Gary (Eloise) Kuper and Myron (Sue) Kuper both from Osage; two sisters-in-law, Edna Reiners of Dumont and Phyllis Card of Hampton, and one brother-in-law, Duane Seibert of Rockford; and two aunts, Iva Terry and Mildred Kuper Huisman.

Frances’ life was also blessed by the special friendship from Louise Buseman who could always be counted on for a special visit, or phone call especially in the last several months. Also, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and friends too many to mention.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Harold, in December 2001; son Lynn, and daughter Julie Ann; her parents, a brother and an infant sister.


Arlene Marie Ringleb

Arlene Marie Ringleb, age 83, of Allison, Iowa, was born the daughter of Fred and Mary (Nordman) Benning on August 6, 1928, rural Butler County, northeast of Clarksville, Iowa. She received her education from a country school near her home. The family moved into Clarksville where she graduated high school in 1947.

On January 22, 1950, Arlene was united in marriage with Donald Ringleb at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. They made their home and farmed near Allison, Iowa.

The couple was later divorced.

Arlene worked in the kitchen at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison for more than 30 years. She formally retired on January 28, 2011. She also worked for a short time for the State of Iowa as a homemaker health aide. In the early 1970s Arlene moved with her daughter, Candace, into town in Allison.

Arlene was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison and was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Vilmar, rural Greene, Iowa. She enjoyed quilting and sewing with the “Nine Patch Batch” quilting group, gardening, raising her flowers, taking care of her yard and fishing. Arlene enjoyed going to her cabin at Harpers Ferry on the Mississippi River, where she loved spending time her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she loved attending many of their activities.

Arlene died Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa, of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Barbara in 1952; one brother, Paul Benning; and a special friend, Don Steere.

Arlene is survived by one daughter, Candace (Steve) Arenholz of Clarksville; two grandchildren, Sara (Allan) Pille of Ankeny, Iowa and Tom (Andrea) Arenholz of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three greatgrandchildren, Morgan Pille and Jaxon and Kenley Arenholz; and three sisters, Ella Backer of Clarksville, Lelah Anhalt of Waverly, Iowa, and Delores Smith of Clarksville.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 21, 2012, at St. John Lutheran Church with burial at Lynwood Cemetery both in Clarksville; Pastor Tom Reuss officiated. The organist was Sharon Leerhoff and the congregation hymns sung were “How Great Thou Art” and “Borning Cry.” The soloist was Travis Bouska; he sang “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Amazing Grace.” The casketbearers were Tom Arenholz, Allan Pille, Charles Backer, Fred Backer, Mike Miller and Daryl Schellhorn. Committal service was held at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Iowa, following the service at the church. The flower committee was Laura McInroy and Sue Lodge.

Kathryn M. Richard

Kathryn M. Richard, 87, of Dubuque, formerly Greene, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Seventh Heaven.

Kathryn was born on February 7, 1924 in Dumont, Iowa the daughter of and Hilka (Miller) Folkerds. She enjoyed working as a nanny for many years. While attending a baseball game, she met Merlyn Richard and on June 23, 1944, the two were married at Ft. Jackson, S.C.

Merlyn preceded her in death on November 21, 1998.

Kathryn moved to Dubuque in 2007 to be near her daughter, Marilyn. She attended St. John’s U.C.C. in rural Nashua, IA and Hope Church in Dubuque and enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, hospitality, and crocheting.

Telling stories and playing cards with family and friends. Five Hundred, Pinochle, and Skipbo were her favorite pastimes.

Surviving is her daughter Marilyn Richard of Dubuque, Iowa and her sister Jeanette Hayner of Dumont, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters Etta Reysack and Tillean McGrean; three brothers John, Claus and Lavern Folkerds.

A Kathryn Richard memorial fund has been established.

Marilyn wishes to extend a special thank you to Mary and J.R. Elliott and the staff at Seventh Heaven for their devotion in caring for Kathryn over the past year; Ennoble Skilled Nursing and Rehab; Pastor Matt and Carol Collins for their support and fellowship and to the many friends who are like family.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 23, 2012 at Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, Iowa. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery, Dumont, Iowa. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, was in charge of arrangements.


Maurice E. Vosburg

Maurice E. Vosburg of Hampton, died January 20, 2012 at age 90. Masonic services were held January 24, 2012, followed by private burial in Gilman, Iowa.

Funeral services for Gladys L. Hitzhusen, 102, of Greene, will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 26, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Visitation will be 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Greene.
