Ives Maxine Struthoff

Ives Maxine Struthoff, 85, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away November 25, 2005, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. Ives was born November 23, 1920, in rural Franklin County, to Nels F. E. and Ella (Blom) Jensen. She graduated from Hampton High School. Ives married Ephriam Wheeler in 1939. Eph passed away in Belgium during the war, after his passing Ives married Delmar Struthoff on January 8, 2948, in Hampton, Iowa. Ives was a homemaker. During World War II Ives was a “Rosie The Riveter”, she worked on the B-17’s at the aircraft factory in California. She also worked at the hemp plant in Hampton for the war effort. She was always proud of those who served her country. She worked for four years at the Federal Land Bank in Hampton. She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont, and she was a member of the Eastern Star. Ives enjoyed quilting, needle work, traveling, farm and yard work, and her class and family reunions. She is survived by her son Terry (Karen) Wheeler of Hampton, grandson Rod (Sonia) Wheeler of Los Angeles, California, granddaughter Tauni (Mike) Harmon of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, granddaughter Tara (Ron) Miller of Northwood, granddaughter Melinda (Jamie) Murray of Hampton, granddaughter Haley (Justin) Harris of Marble, Colorado, granddaughter Katie Wolf of Hampton, sister Eunice (Manuel) Liddell of Independence, Missouri, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Eph Wheeler and Delmar Struthoff, two sons, John and Kent Struthoff. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 28, 2005 at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Beryl Reed accompanying soloist, Mrs. Norman Brown. The usher was Robert Barber. Pallbearers were Jeff Bigler, Ron Miller, Mike Harken, Eric Handorf, David Hannah and Kevin Meyers. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangement.


Wanda L. Wolf

Wanda L. Wolf, 91, of Dumont, Iowa died November 24, 2005 at her home in Dumont of natural causes. She was born on January 8, 1914 in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Arthur and Iva (Davis) Wolf. She was married to Irving Wolf. Wanda was an inspector at Wheelabrator in Southbend, Indiana. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. Survivors include a son Mike and wife Mary Thronburgh Sr. of Dumont; step-daughter Carol and husband Jack Nielsen of Port Aransas, Texas; seven grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Private funeral services will be held at a later date. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont was in charge of arrangements.


Arleen R. Schaeffer

Arleen R. Schaeffer, 79, formerly of Marshalltown, currently resided at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, died there Tuesday, November 22, 2005. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2005, at the Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Interment took place at the Allison Cemetery in Allison, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed in her name to either Iowa River Hospice or Cedar Valley Hospice. Arleen was born May 5, 1926, in Allison, Iowa, the daughter of Chris and Katherine (Frerichs) Fleshner. She was raised and educated in Allison, where she graduated from the Allison High School. Arleen married Richard L. Schaeffer on May 28, 1947, in Sheffield, Iowa. Following their marriage they owned and operated Schaeffers Cash and Carry in Allison for several years. Their family moved to Nevada, Iowa in 1958 where Arleen worked for Story County Farm Service. During 1970 Arleen and Richard settled in Marshalltown. Arleen was employed by Fisher Controls as a pricing agent until her retirement in 1990. During her free time Arleen enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and traveling. Arleen was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Arleen is survived by her daughter Diane H. Schaeffer of Cedar Falls, her two sons: Daniel L. Schaeffer and Dick Schaeffer Jr. both of Denver, Colorado, her two granddaughters Michelle (Mannie) Olubode and Lori Schaeffer both of Denver, two great-grandchildren: Abbie and Paris, two nephews and two nieces. Arleen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard and her two sisters: Annette (Ken) Smith and Carrie (Mike) Dailey. Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Marshalltown was in charge of arrangements.


 
Olive Reents Crandall

Olive Reents Crandall, 87, died Friday, Nov. 18th at Morningstar Place in Hemet, California. She was a native of Allison, Iowa, and a 1936 Allison High School graduate. Mrs. Crandall lived in California for the last 54 years. She was a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Andrews of San Jacinto, California and a son Steven Crandall of Camarillo, California, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Jennie Harvey of Independence, Iowa. Memorial services will be held at 11a.m., Dec. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hemet. Inurnment will be private. McWane Family Funeral Home in Hemet is handling arrangements. Roger H. Ponto

Roger H. Ponto, 81, of Greene, died Monday, November 28, 2005, at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2005, at St. John’s United Curch of Christ, Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene. Visitation will continue Thursday one hour before services at the church. Bea J. Rickel

Funeral services for Bea J. Rickel, 90, of Bristow, were held Monday, November 28, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in Aredale, with Pastor Tera Amundson officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Bristow. Berniece Jeane McGeachy was born September 27, 1915, the daughter of John Harrington and Ruth Lucinda (Jay) McGeachy, and died November 25, 2005, at her family home in Bristow, leaving this world in the same bedroom and bed she came into this world in, ninety years, one month, and twenty nine days earlier. She received her education and graduated from the Bristow High School in 1932. She graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught at Kirkman, Iowa. On September 27, 1935 she was united in marriage to Donald Frederick Rickel in Harlan, Iowa. During WWII she worked at the B & G Hosiery in Omaha. In 1950 the family moved to Walnut Grove, Mo and in 1956 to Davisburg, MI, until returning to Bristow in 1958. Bea was employed for Wubbena Produce for several years before becoming employed by the United States Postal Service in 1965. She retired as Postmaster of Bristow in October 1999. Even though she retired, she never quit working. She answered the telephone for Dr. James Tammeus, DVM, until her death, as well as gardening, canning, cooking, and baking pies for family members. She served on the Oak Hill Cemetery Board for many years. Living family members include her daughter: Donna (Robert) Dunlap of Rockford, six grandchildren: Debra (David) Lindley of Rockford, Tanya (Brian)Wilcox of Greene, Tamyra (Christopher) Meletiou Huntersville , NC, Daniel “Booner” (Angie) Dunlap of Zearing, Iowa, John (Danatta) Dunlap of Jeffers, MN, Rick Allen (Stacy) Rieken of Dows, Iowa; eight great grandchildren: Brooke, Dylan, Colten, Austin, Linne’a, Kaylee, Chevy, Mattison. She leaves to join her husband who died October 8, 1974, her daughter Melinda Rieken who died April 17, 2000, Son-in-law Gary Eberling, and grandson Mathew Dunlap. Alice Janssen

Alice Janssen, age 83, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Juren and Gertrude Mein DeVries on February 18, 1922, in Butler County near Aplington. She graduated from the Ackley High School in 1940, and continued her education at the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Alice was united in marriage with Chris Janssen on October 8, 1942. The Couple lived near Wellsburg, Iowa, for a short time after their marriage, and then they moved to a farm near Aplington. Alice and Chris moved to Prescott, Arizona after retiring from farming. They lived in Prescott for three years then moved back to Iowa and lived in Ames. Chris died in 1980 and Alice returned to Aplington. Alice had worked as a Nurses Aid at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa, mostly she was a homemaker. Alice was a member of First Reformed in Aplington and a former member of the Christian Reformed Church in rural Ackley, Iowa. She was active in the Ladies Guild in the past. Alice enjoyed traveling, ceramics and cross stitching. Alice died Thursday, November 24, 2005, at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris Janssen; parents; two sisters, Gertie Abbas and Tillie DeVries; and one brother, Benjamin DeVries. Alice is survived by her: two sons, Clifford James (Janice) Janssen, Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Steven Lynn (Patricia) Janssen, Boulder, Colorado; two daughters, Jurene Elaine (Robert) Dralle, Allison, Iowa, and Charlene Ann (Dean) Rogers, Nevada, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; three step great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Emma Jean (Eugene) Herman, Prescott, Arizona. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 28, 20005 at the First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist Lois Wessels accompanied Congregational Hymns “This is My Father’s World”, “O’ for a Closer Walk with Thee” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness”. Casketbearers were Brian Hofstra, Tim Primus, Mike Janssen, Randy Olsen, Kaylene Harkins and Colleen Rogers. Interment was in Christian Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Clarence Conrad Wubbena

Clarence Conrad Wubbena, 85, of Allison, Iowa, passed away December 2, 2005 at his home in Allison. Clarence was born August 23, 1920, in rural Allison, Iowa, to Mike and Louise (Koenig) Wubbena. He was baptized on September 26, 1920, and confirmed on April 8, 1934, at the Vilmar Lutheran Church in rural Greene, Iowa. He attended a rural Butler County school south of Allison. Clarence was married to Gladys Lubben on May 10, 1942, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Iowa. Clarence was a farmer. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Clarence enjoyed fishing, horses, gardening, going to the sale barn and auctions. He enjoyed the County Fair, and was a supporter of the 4-H program. He enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors and family. He is survived by his wife Gladys Wubbena of Allison, son Beryl & wife Shirley Wubbena of Bristow, daughter Barbara & husband Dean Wagner of Greene, grandchildren: Kristi & husband Alan Meyer, Grant & wife Diana Wubbena, Jennifer & husband Chad Buseman, John & wife Stacy Wagner, Jami Wubbena, Laura Wagner, Jessi & husband Kurt Dralle, Cole Wubbena and eight great grandchildren. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Henry, Harm and Miko. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2005 at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with Rev. Jeffrey A. Blank officiating. Special music was provided by quartet Ronald & Mary Jo Stille and Troy and Tonya Fisher and the congregational songs “How Great Thou Art” and “Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me” accompanied by organist Vivian Green. Pallbearers were Alan Meyer, Kurt Dralle, John Wagner, Chad Buseman, Grant Wubbena and Cole Wubbena. Honorary pallbearers were Floyd Senne, Robert Fenneman, George Seehusen and Heyo Kampman. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Vera Jean Borneman

Vera Jean Borneman, 67, of Dumont, Iowa died December 1, 2005 at her home in Dumont of natural causes. She was born October 5, 1938 in Dumont, Iowa to John and Grace (Pohl) Wearda. Vera graduated from the Allison High School in 1957. She worked at Allison Thermogas and Hampton Cafe prior to being married to Russell Borneman on September 9, 1960 in Dumont. She was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and Sunday School pianist. Vera had a great love for flowers, she enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and playing the piano. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. Vera is survived by her husband Russell Borneman of Dumont, daughter Julie Borneman of Coralville, daughter Janan Borneman of Des Moines, son Bryce Borneman of Dumont, daughter Brooke & husband Eric Biven of Shawnee, Kansas, sister Marlene Havig of Dumont, brother Jerold Wearda of Sheffield, sister Jeannette Muhlenbruck of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren: Erica & Ryan Biven of Shawnee, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Grace Wearda. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 5, 2005 at the Dumont Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music was provided by organist Jim Siebrands accomp-anying the soloist Mark Gerdes. Pallbearers were Merlin Viet, Gerry Craig, Dalen Miller, Duane Wubbena, Raymond Wickham, and Mike Thornburgh, Jr. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Duane Enabnit was born November 12, 1934 in Marble Rock, a son of Edward O. And Doris B. (Vorhes) Enabnit, and died Monday, December 5, 2005, at the North Iowa Merecy Medical Center in Mason City. Douglas Peter Rewerts

Douglas Peter Rewerts, age 46, of Aplington, Iowa was born the son of Roy Lloyd and Georgia (Nicklaus) Rewerts on February 19, 1959, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center, Iowa. Doug was baptized into the Christian faith in 1959 and was later confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parkersburg. He received his education and graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1977. Following graduation he worked a short time dry walling with LaVern Kluiter. Doug was united in marriage with Linda Dingel on April 7, 1990, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home and lived all their married lives in the Aplington-Parkersburg area. Doug was currently employed at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls, Iowa, working in pump repair and had been there for nearly 30 years. He also enjoyed fixing up houses in his spare time. Doug loved spending time with his family, especially all the camping trips they took. His favorite place to go was at Beeds Lake in Hampton. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and all of the camp fires they enjoyed together in their back yard. Doug was very close to his children and very involved in their lives. He had a special way of having compassion talks with many family members. For many years Doug helped organize the Parkersburg Car Show during fun days. He was an active member of the Tractor Club and every year he enjoyed going on the KGLO Tractor Ride. Doug died on Thursday, December 1, 2005, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, from a sudden heart attack. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Georgia Rewerts. Doug is survived by his wife, Linda Rewerts of Aplington, Iowa; three daughters, Jennifer (Jeremiah) Henrichs of Alexander, Iowa, Jodi Huisman of Parkersburg, Iowa and Kelly Huisman of Aplington, Iowa; one grandson, Toby Henrichs; two brothers, Dale Rewerts of Parkersburg, Iowa and Patrick (Tina) Rewerts of Scott Air Force Base, Illinois; and four sisters, Theresa (Bob) Williams of Clear Lake, Wisconsin, Lorilei (Roland) Heidt of Dike, Iowa, Darcy (Wade) Bertram of Aplington, Iowa and Angela (Curt) Mattingly of Riverside, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 5, 2005 at Parkersburg United Methodist Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Rev. Betsy Piette officiating. Pianist was Anna Mae Schnucker. Special music was “Daddy’s Hands,” by Holly Dunn; “The Dad He Didn’t Have To Be,” by Brad Paisley and “One More Day,” by Diamond Rio. Congregational Hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art”. Honorary Casketbearers were Brody Bertram, Zachary Bertram, Josh Rewerts and Lance Rewerts. Casketbearers were Jim Zierath, Bob Bausman, Doug Phinney, Dick Chapman, Curt Mattingly and Wade Bertram. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Lizetta “Liz” Jane Luchtenburg

Lizetta “Liz” Jane Luchtenburg, age 77, of Allison, Iowa and formerly of Clarksville, Iowa, was born on June 27, 1928, the daughter of John and Jenny (Folkerts) Cramer, in Parkersburg, Iowa. She received her education from a rural country school near her home. Lizetta was united in marriage with John Luchtenburg on July 10, 1951, in Allison. Following their marriage the couple briefly lived in Clinton, Waverly and Shell Rock, Iowa. In 1955 they made their home in Clarksville, Iowa. Liz worked at the Allison Health Care Center for 20 years. During this time in her life she enjoyed taking care of her plants and flowers. She had a special love for her dogs and liked raising parakeets. Liz always enjoyed watching birds, especially the gold finches and humming birds. Through the years she liked listening to old country music and in her younger days she loved to yodel. Liz and her daughter, Diane moved their present home in Allison in 1984. She loved to spend time with her family especially her grandchildren and she would usually have a lot to write about them in her diary she faithfully kept for over 30 years. Lizetta died on Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at the Ackley Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1978. Lizetta is survived by one son, Randy (Janet) Luchtenburg of Aplington, Iowa; two daughters, Diane (special friend, Jerry Frey) Luchtenburg of Allison, Iowa and Shirley (Travis) Smith of Clarksville, Iowa; four grandchildren, Rodney (Jody) Smith and Kimberly Smith, Jason Luchtenburg and Jennifer (Jerry) Drehobl; three great grandchildren, Thomas Dominy, Sarah Dominy and Skyler Smith; one brother, Edward (Tudy) Cramer of Clarksville, Iowa; one sister, Margaret (Louie) Doty of Clarksville, Iowa; and four she considered as her grandchildren, Terri Hulley, Bobbie Johnson, Mark Frey and Clint Frey. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2005 at the Church of Christ in Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Val Swinton officiating. Congregational Hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross”, “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands” and “The Circle,” by Johnny Cash. Casketbearers Rodney Smith, Jason Luchtenburg, Mark Frey, Clint Frey, Russell Doty and John Cramer. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Warner Sluiter

Warner Sluiter, age 90, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Jacob Sluiter and Anna (Garrels) on November 19, 1915, on a farm south of Allison. He received his education attending various country schools in the Allison and Parkersburg area. Warner was united in marriage with Elizabeth Block on June 25, 1948, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They made their home and farmed north of Parkersburg. He also operated a custom feed grinding business for a short time. Warner retired from farming in 1978 at the age of 63. They moved into Parkersburg in 1991, where he lived until entering the Maple Manor Care Center on May 14, 2005. Warner was in fellowship with the Christians at Hitesville Gospel Hall. He was saved on December 29, 1959, with assurance from Isaiah chapter 43:25 and chapter 44:22. Warner loved farming and family get-togethers. He was a quiet loving husband, father and grandfather who always exhibited a great deal of patience. Warner passed quietly into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, December 17, 2005, at the Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Anna Spieker, Margaret Tack, Bena Walters; and three brothers, Adolph, Henry and Grant Sluiter. Warner is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sluiter of Parkersburg, Iowa; two sons, Russ (Shirley) Sluiter of Denver, Iowa and Randy (Eunice) Sluiter of Parkersburg, Iowa; one daughter, Ronda Sluiter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one sister, Fannie Leerhoff of Parkersburg, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, Iowa. Officiating were Mr. Robert Orr, Mr. Eric McCullough and Mr. Russ Sluiter. A quartet of Randy and Eunice Sluiter, Dawn Pursell and Alyssa Kluiter sang “Midst the Darkness, Storm and Sorrow”. Congregational Hymns were “When First O`erwhelmed With Sin and Shame” and “What Will it be to Dwell Above”. Honorary Casketbearer was Tim O’Byrne. Casketbearers were Aaron Sluiter, Mark Stratton, Richard Pursell, Nick Kluiter, Jake Walters and Burdeen Sluiter. Ushers were Larry Asche, Wesley Swieter and Dallas Kluiter. Interment was in Hitesville Cemetery, rural Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Homes, Inc. Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.


S.B. “Barney” Holtkamp

S.B. “Barney” Holtkamp, 86, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died early Tuesday morning, December 13, 2005, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center. Barney was born on January 27, 1919, north of Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Herman and Theda (Reints) Holtkamp. He attended school in Plainfield, graduating in 1935. Following high school, Barney attended Gates Business College, graduating in 1940. Barney enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 4, 1941, where he served in the North Atlantic and Mediteranean Sea. On June 17, 1944, Barney was united in marriage to Marjorie Donaldson in New York City, New York. The couple made their home on the Naval Air Base in Norfolk, Virginia, until Barney was honorably discharged on September 24, 1945, at the end of World War II. They moved to Shell Rock where Barney was employed by Security State Bank. He retired in 1984 after serving as Vice President for 39 years. Barney was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he was chairman of the building committee. He was also a member of the American Legion for 60 years, Treasurer of the Shell Rock Cemetery Association and a member of the Odd Fellows. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting pheasants, photography, collecting coins and reading history books. Barney is survived by his daughter Jeanne Jones and her husband Keith of Cedar Falls; one son, Mark Holtkamp and his wife Virginia of Grundy Center; two grandchildren, Samantha Holtkamp and Cassandra Holtkamp. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marjorie in July 2005; and by one sister, Helene Stingley. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2005, at 2:30 P.M. at Faith Lutheran Church, Shell Rock, with Pastor Steven D. McGinley officiating. Burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:30 P.M. until time of services at the church. Memorials may be directed to Hospice.


Loretta Bruch

Loretta Bruch, age 95, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday, December 11, 2005, at the Rosewood Estates in Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. She was born the daughter of William Patrick and Mary Agnes Foley Thompson on November 27, 1910, in Davenport, Iowa. She graduated form Immaculate Conception Academy. Loretta was united in marriage with Marion Lyle Bruch on May 6, 1933, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Davenport. Loretta is survived by her four children, Mary (Bob) Pease of Ventura, California, David Bruch, of Normal Illinois, William Bruch of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Elaine (Tom) Lawler, Waverly, Iowa; eight grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Bruch, August 18, 1952, her parents, William and Mary (Foley) Thompson, a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Bruch, four sisters, Elizabeth Thompson, Mary Anne Thompson, Alice Thompson and Irene Frerkes, one brother, Thomas Thompson. Casketbearers are Karen Laing, Barbara Sikes, Kevin Bruch, Steven Bruch, Michael Bruch, Keith Bruch, Erin Wilgenbusch, and Loretta Stinson. A Family Funeral Mass were at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at the St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa with burial in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery also in Davenport, Iowa. Memorial maybe directed to the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parkersburg. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg is in charge of arrangements.


Albert Penning

Albert Penning, age 90, of Aplington, Iowa, was born on February 27, 1915, on a farm one mile north of Austinville, Iowa the son of Klaas J. and Sophie (Maifeld) Penning. He received his education from a rural country school near his home through the 4th grade and graduated from the Ackley High School in 1933. On May 8, 1937, Albert was united in marriage with Elizabeth Stubbe at Kanawha, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm where he was raised. To this union two children Sidney and Vivian were born. Along with farming the family farm, Albert ran a custom silo filling business for over 30 years. Elizabeth passed away on July 21, 1948. Albert married Elsie Disney on September 12, 1952, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They lived on the farm until 1974, when they moved to Aplington. He always enjoyed being in the outdoors and spending time on the farm after retirement. Albert helped organize the Farm Bureau Service Company in Butler County and was on the Board of Directors for 30 years. He was on the original F.S. Board of Directors in Bloomington, Illinois and had served on the local Farm Bureau Board. Albert moved into the assisted living at the Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, Iowa, in 2001. He died on Monday, December 12, 2005, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington of natural causes. He was preceded in death by two wives, Elizabeth Penning on July 21, 1948, and Elsie Penning on May 7, 1992; his parents; six sisters, Sophie Jansonius, Mame Lupkes, Lena Janssen, Augusta Penning, Augusta Betten and Hattie Rotgers; and five brothers, Bill, John, Henry, Andrew and Klaus. Albert is survived by one son, Sidney (Connie) Penning of Aplington, Iowa; one daughter, Vivian (Ralph) Mohwinkle of Aplington, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jody (Rick) Thies, Jeff (Kerri) Mohwinkle, Anita (David) Osman and Kristy Penning; and seven great grandchildren, Nicole & Brandon Thies, Jonathon, Kaitlyn, Kasidy & Kinsey Mohwinkle and Elise Osman. Funeral Services were at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Iowa. Rev. Greg Smith officiated the services. The organist was Linda Birley, and the congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “Silent Night” and “How Great Thou Art.” The Honorary Casketbearers were Dwain Betten, Arlen Kromminga, Dennis Meyer and Fred Bolhuis. The Casketbearers were Jeff Mohwinkle, Rick Thies, David Osman, Dennis Rotgers, Jim Geerdes and Calvin Jansonius. Interment was at the Oak Wood Cemetery in Ackley, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington were in charge of the arrangements. Memorials maybe directed to the family.
M. Joanne Weires

M. Joanne Weires, 84, of Allison, Iowa, passed away December 15, 2005, at her home in Allison, Iowa. She was born May 8, 1921, in Washington, D.C., to Frederick A. and Kathleen (Spezia) Jonas. She graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Oelwein, Iowa, and then attended Hamilton Business College for two years in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She married Dr. Paul Weires on September 15, 1945, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, Iowa. Joanne was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, Iowa. Joanne enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and dancing. She is survived by her son John Paul Weires of Des Moines, daughter Kitty & husband Wm. Brandt Widgeon of Allison, grandson Jason Dulude of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, grandson Billy Widgeon of Allison and special friend Don Mulholland of Panama City, Florida. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two beloved Aunts. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 17, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, Iowa with Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Theresa Majewski accompanying St. Mary’s Catholic Church Choir. Pallbearers were Bill Codner, Mike Codner, Tom Weires, Robert Crumley, Micheal Fishel Sr. and Kenneth Alberts. Final resting place was in the Allison Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
