Timothy James Chantrill

Timothy James Chantrill, 51, of Chapin, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

He was born on March 11, 1961, in Franklin County, Iowa, to James Edward and Roma Louise (Hungate) Chantrill. Timothy graduated from Sheffield High School and completed his training to drive semi in Des Moines. He drove semi for FedEx.

Timothy was affiliated with the Baptist Church. He enjoyed golfing, driving his GTO, riding sand rails and spending time with his family and friends.

Timothy is survived by his daughter Randi Lea Chantrill of Mounds View, Minnesota, son Spencer Simon Chantrill of Hampton, daughter Ashley Nicole Lopez of Hampton, daughter Illiana Marie Bartsch of Hampton, parents James Edward and Roma Louise Chantrill, brother Ronald Paul Chantrill of Klemme, brother Richard Windell Chantrill of Chapin, sister Roma Jean Murphy of Geneva, brother Leland Fredrick Chantrill of Portland, Maine, grandmother Margaret Louise Hungate of Hampton, really close friend Jerry Dixon of Sheffield, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Leland E. Hungate, paternal grandparents W. Fred and Viola Chantrill, aunts and uncles Kenneth and Mavis Pope, Richard and Lucille Chantrill, Vern Schluter and Clyde Chantrill and cousin Dale Schluter.

Burial will take place in the Wayside Cemetery in Chapin.


Jacalyn R. Franke

Jacalyn R. Franke, 62, of Dumont, Iowa passed away Friday, December 21, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. She was born on May 22, 1950, to Ray & Magdalene (Stafford) Schwab.

She attended school in Hampton and then graduated from Cedar Rapids High School.

Jackie married Jim Franke on September 14, 1969, in Hampton,, Iowa, and they resided in Dumont, to this union three children were born, Troy, Cindy and Todd, the marriage later ended.

She worked at the Dumont Wellness Center in Dumont for many years and touched many lives. She very much enjoyed cooking, fishing, sports, crocheting and her balloons.

Jackie loved to spent time with her family, grandchildren and her Yorkies Molly and Mindy. She is survived by her son Troy (Jean) Franke of Dumont, daughter Cindy (Rod) Arjes of Dumont, son Todd (Brandy) Franke of Dumont, mother Magdalene Siddell of Hampton, fiancé Roger Sage of Dumont, her grandchildren Trevor, Alexa, Maci, Kaci, Leighcen, Landon, Louden, Cole and Carli.

Jackie is preceded in death by her father.

Funeral Services for
Jacalyn R. Franke were held at 10:30 am Friday, December 28, at Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont with Pastor Jeff Fiet officiating. Visitation was held 4 - 7 pm at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont. Burial will take place at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, Iowa.


Ollie Ruth Collins

Ollie Ruth Collins, 89, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012, at her residence at Dutchman's Oaks in Dumont, Iowa. 

She was born December 11, 1923, in Dumont, the daughter of Jasper and Alice (Folkerds) Kriens.  Ollie attended Dumont schools in Dumont, Iowa.  She was married on December 26, 1940, in Allison, Iowa, to Halden Collins.  Ollie was a homemaker and also worked as a cook in various restaurants in Dumont and at the Dumont Care Center. 

Ollie enjoyed playing bingo, cards, cooking and attended activities at the Dutchman's Oak assisted living center in Dumont, Iowa.

She is survived by her son Jerry Collins of North Platte, Nebraska, son Jim Collins of Waupaca, Wisconsin, son Rick (Cheryl) Collins of Dumont, daughter Debbie (Ed) Mouw of Dumont, daughter Barbie (Jim) Morrow of Whitehall, Ohio, brother Harm Kriens of LaPuente, California, sister Marge Hemmes of Hampton, sister Mary Burkett of Dumont, sister Shirley Evans of Dumont, ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. 

Ollie is preceded in death by her husband Halden Collins, grandson Kevin Collins, great grandson Brandon Ayers, daughter-in-laws Diana Collins and Jackie Collins, brothers John, Ed, Bill, James, Jasper Jr., and Otto, sisters Edna, Effie and Minnie.

Burial will take place at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, Iowa.


Eunice Lorraine Jacobson

Eunice Lorraine Jacobson, 87, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa.

She was born on March 17, 1925, in Sheffield, Iowa, to C. K. and Lela (Deam) Crawford. Eunice graduated from Hansell High School. She was united in marriage to James Jacobson on May 2, 1948, at the Church of Christ in Hampton.

Eunice was an active member of the Church of Christ in Hampton, throughout her life. She enjoyed growing flowers and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Eunice is survived by her husband Jim Jacobson of Hampton, sons Russell (Linda) Jacobson of Urbana, Illinois, and Paul (Sue) Jacobson of Waverly, grandchildren Heather (Matt) Goergen of Bloomington, Illinois, and their son Carter; Sharon Jacobson of Champaign, Illinois, and her children Jaden, Reece and Kameron; Sarah (Jon) Bohannen of Champaign, Illinois, and their children Sydney and Lillian, niece Donna Phariss of Clear Lake, nephew Bill LaPorte of Oklahoma and niece Beverly Virgo of Raymore, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents C. K. and Lela, brothers Doug and Merwyn and sister Dorothy Lekwa.

Burial of cremains will take place in the Hampton Cemetery at a later date.

Ruth Mae Shriver

Ruth Mae Shriver, 87, of Allison, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the Waverly Heath Center in Waverly, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home of Allison is in charge of arrangements.

Donna B. Brandt

Donna B. Brandt, 81, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

She was born on August 10, 1931, in Clearwater, Nebraska, to Arthur and Mary (Warner) Norwood. Donna was united in marriage to Merle Lee Brandt in 1949. She was a nurse's aide at various healthcare facilities.

Donna enjoyed gardening, quilting and crocheting.

She is survived by her sons Merle Brandt of Spokane, Washington, Douglas and his wife Becky Brandt of Dumont, Tabor and his wife Tonnette Brandt of Menomonie, Wisconsin and Jessie and his wife Gini Brandt of Auburn, Washington, daughters-in-law Julie Brandt of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Stephanie Brandt of Tacoma, Washington, and Vickie Brandt of Tacoma, Washington, eighteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Mary, husband Merle Lee Brandt and sons Mike Brandt, Gary Brandt and Scott Brandt.

Paul C. Rottink

Paul C. Rottink, 86, of Allison, Iowa, passed away January 3, 2013, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison, Iowa.

He was born on December 30, 1926, in Clarksville, Iowa, to Harry J. and Marie S. (Aukes) Rottink. Paul attended schools in Allison. He was united in marriage to Mamie Winkowitsch on October 16, 1949, in Kesley, Iowa. Paul farmed, milked dairy cows, was a hired hand, painted barns and houses and sold Archer Oil for thirty-two years.

He was a member of the Kesley Presbyterian Church in Kesley, where he was an elder, a deacon, an usher and a Sunday School teacher. Paul was also a member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spearing fish in the winter in the West Fork of the Cedar River, cutting wood, playing 500, attending basketball and football games for Alllison and Bristow, raising and selling watermelons and most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Paul is survived by his wife, of sixty-three years, Mamie Rottink of Allison, daughter Paulette (Steven) Lugg of Ventura, son Garry (Terri) Rottink of Grundy Center, grandchildren Mike Rottink, Jon Rottink, Tim Rottink, Amber Krusey, Jason Bru, Ryan Bru and Sarah Lugg, great-grandchildren Alicia Krusey, Brianna Krusey, Vanessa Krusey, Lilly Bru, Jay Bru, Archer Bru, Elliana Rottink, Naysa Rottink and one on the way, brothers David (Shirley) Rottink of Clarksville and Donald Rottink of Clarksville, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Marie, son Larry, daughter Doreen and sister Marion.

Burial will take place in the Allison Cemetery.

Merna Kathryn McDonald

Merna Kathryn McDonald, 100, passed away December 31, 2012 at Saratoga Grove Assisted Living Center in Downers Grove, Illinois.

She was born June 12, 1912 in rural Allison, Iowa to Hugh L. and Clara Agnes (Yost) Mosher. Merna graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1930, and subsequently attended the Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, receiving her teaching certificate in 1932 and her B.A. in Elementary Education in 1940.

She was married in 1958 to John Stewart McDonald in Downers Grove, Illinois. Merna taught elementary school in Butler County for 11 years from 1933 to 1944, and soon after began a 33-year career as an elementary teacher in Downers Grove, Illinois. During that time countless students passed through her classroom, many of whom remember her fondly even to this day for teaching them to appreciate music, as well as nurturing their enthusiasm for learning.

In addition to teaching, Merna was active in a number of music organizations in west suburban Chicagoland. She played cello for many years in the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra, a high quality ensemble of professionals and serious amateurs, and in the pit orchestra for local musicals. Later, she joined the Senior Suburban Orchestra, composed of dedicated senior players that performed at various churches and retirement centers. She played the cello continuously from the age of 12 to 93.

Merna was a considerable world traveler, having taken many trips to various destinations with her husband John, and later with her brother Charles and sister-in-law Viola. For a number of years she was a member of First Methodist Church in Downers Grove, and also had many interests, including researching family history, bowling, golf, and horseshoes.

Merna is survived by her niece Marcia (Bill) Rovani of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, niece Ellen (Scott) Hanson of Hayward, Wisconsin and Port Charlotte, Florida, niece Marilyn (Jeff) Bodine of Minneapolis, Minnesota, niece Barbara Mosher of Big Lake, Minnesota, nephew Charles H. (Linda) Mosher of Allison, niece Ann Mosher of Bloomington, Minnesota, ten grandnieces and nephews, and two great grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, sister-in-law Viola, and brother Charles Marshall Mosher.

Burial took place in the Allison Cemetery.

Shirley Maxine (Sidmore) Hansen

Shirley Maxine (Sidmore) Hansen, 87, of Aredale, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

She was born November 27, 1925 to Claude and Iva (Elliott) Sidmore near Dumont. She attended school at the Little Yellow Schoolhouse through 8th grade and graduated from Dumont High School.

She married Marvin M Hansen on September 16, 1944 in Hampton. On May 10, 1952 she lost her husband in an automobile accident. While raising her 3 daughters, she
worked part time driving a grain truck for about 10 years. In 1968, she attended LaJames College of Hairstyling and opened her own beauty shop in her home which she operated for 21 years until she retired in 1990.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, bowling, crocheting, crosswords and playing cards.

She is survived by two daughters, Sheryl (Kenneth) Ayers of Bristow and Nancy Kling of Davenport; seven grandchildren, Brian and wife Lori Ayers of Dumont, Tami (Ayers) Howey of Charles City, Jamey and wife Bridget Ayers of Bristow, Denise
Harper of Raleigh, NC, Jodie (Harper)and husband Jim Whiten of Noblesville, IN, Shawn and wife Erica Harper of Arkansas, Paula Kling of Davenport; ten great-grandchildren, Dustin Ayers, Kendra Howey, Bailey, Kalen, Ava and Ahna Ayers, Nicholas, Alexis and Ridge Harper, and Alex Whiten; three great-greatgrandchildren,  Lexus and Lea Howey and Connor Ayers; one brother
Harold Sidmore of Dumont.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, a daughter Donna Harper, a grandson, David Ayers, a great grandson, Brandon Ayers, 2 brothers, Carl
and Eugene Sidmore, a sister Darlene Boelkes and a dear friend Cecil Morehouse.

Graveside services were held Monday, January 14, 2013, at the ,Dumont Cemetery, Dumont, Iowa. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, Cedar Rapids, was in charge of arrangements.



Reba E. Schulz

Reba E. Schulz, 82, of Hansell, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

She was born on March 22, 1930, in Colfax, Iowa, to Durbin and Erma (Scheffel) Ball. Reba attended elementary school in Monroe, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Hansell in 1948. She was united in marriage to Charles Krukow on November 19, 1950. Charles preceded her in death in 1969. Reba then married Ron Schulz on July 11, 1971, at the West Fork United Methodist Church. During her life, she was a homemaker, drove school bus, sold Avon products, worked for the post office and with her daughter, Sandy, painting and hanging wallpaper.

Reba was a member of the Hansell and West Fork United Methodist Churches and the Dumont Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, taking bus trips to various places and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Reba is survived by her husband Ron Schulz of Hansell; son Gary (Merra Loy) Krukow of Bristow, and their son Paul Krukow; son Mike Krukow of Thompson, and his children Brandon Krukow, Bret Krukow and Chad Krukow; daughter Sandy (Vonn) Aaron of Hampton, and their children Josh Aaron and Miranda Aaron; son Ron (Phylis) Krukow of Iowa Falls, and their children Joe Krukow and Sheena Rhead; daughter Kathy (Ken) Barloon of Altoona, and their children Jennifer Barloon, Jessica Barloon and Allison Barloon; son Kevin Krukow (special friend Lisa Bradley) of Orchard and his children Jerad Krukow, Bridgette Abbot and Annetta Krukow; great-grandchildren Ben, Loralei, Alexis, Taylor, Josie Mae, Alexa, Oliver and two on the way; along with sister-in-law Deone Schulz Deam, nephew and nieces Gary Schulz, Sandy Eckhart and Jean Mitchel.

She was preceded in death by her parents Durbin and Erma Ball, first husband Charles Krukow, one grandchild and brother-in-law Gerald Schulz.

Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.



Junior C. Havig

Junior C. Havig, 88, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

He was born on September 17, 1924, in Osage, Iowa, to James and Winifred (Sido) Havig. Junior attended schools in Dumont. He was united in marriage to Marlene Wearda on December 27, 1946, in Dumont, Iowa.

Junior served his country in the United States Army in World War II. He spent most of his working life as a farmer finally retiring in November of 1995. Junior was an active member of the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church in Dumont and a member of the Dumont American Legion. He loved golfing and bowling.

Junior is survived by his wife Marlene of Dumont, son Kenneth and wife Patty of Bristow, son Larry and wife Deone of Dumont, eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty, brother Keith and grandson Bryan Walsh.

Burial will take place at the Dumont Cemetery.

Kathryn K. Smith

Kathryn K. Smith, 69, of Clarksville, Iowa, died January 7, 2013 at the Waverly Health Center.

Kathryn Kay Albers was born on January 31, 1943, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Will and Laura (Kammeyer) Albers. She was baptized at St. Paul's Parsonage in Waverly, and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. She graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1961, and from Waterloo School of Beauty in 1962. She owned and operated Kathryn's Beauty Box from June, 1962 to June, 1966, on her parent's farm. She moved her shop into Shell Rock and was located there until July, 1982. She also worked as secretary for husband when he was self employed as an A. I. Technician. She later owned and operated her own business, Kathy's Variety of Things, in which she made and sold embroidery and craft items.

On August 21, 1982, Kathryn was united in marriage to Albert William Letchford Smith at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Albert came to America in 1977 from Warragul, Victoria in Australia.

Kathryn was a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. She served four years on the Board of Directors of the Shell Rock Development Corporation, holding the office of treasurer for two years. She was also a proud member of the Shell Rock Commercial Club and held the office of treasurer. She was a member of the Shell Rock Business and Professional Women Club, and held the office of President and Secretary. She also served a year on the Board of Directors for the Riverside Cemetery Association, and held the office of secretary. For enjoyment, Kathy spent her time sewing, quilting and bird-watching.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Albert; son Clarence (Richelle) Smith of West Des Moines; sister Eleanor (John) Grapp of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Kathryn's body has been cremated, and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2013, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Kim Smith officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial of cremains will be at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Geraldine Bruggeman

Funeral services for Geraldine Bruggeman, 86, formerly of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 12, 2013, at St.
Paul's Lutheran Church in Marble Rock, with Pastor Bob Scheurer officiating. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Friday, January 11, 2013, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene and will continue at the church one hour before services on Saturday.

Geraldine Reints was born in Clarksville, Butler County, Iowa, on September 15, 1926, the daughter of William John and Etjedina (Reints) Reints and died on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Gerry received her education in country school and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1943. She received her teaching certificate from at Wartburg College in Waverly and obtained her BA Teaching degree from UNI. Once a teacher she taught school in Plainfield for one year in a one room school house. Gerry's life was dedicated to educating young people. She taught school at RRMR for 45 years before retiring in1991.

Gerry was united in marriage to Melbourne Lowell. Bruggeman on August 4, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarksville. This union was blessed with two children, Deb and Doug. The family moved to Greene where they farmed until settling in Marble Rock where they made their home.

She was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she served with the WELCA and was on the church council. Gerry was interested in gardening, was a member of the Marble Rock Historical Society, served on the Marble Rock Library Board, and was a tutor. She was a very social person who especially enjoyed the after church coffees at her home.

Living family members include her children: Deb (Terry) Hammer of Cedar Rapids, Doug (Cindy) Bruggeman, Rochester, MN; five grandchildren:
Brennan Hammer, Sarah Bruggeman, Tara (Justin) Schlake, Jared Bruggeman Jordan Bruggeman; four great-grandchildren: Corrin, Caydance, Ashton, Charli; nieces, Beverly Slinger and Judy Wood; Nephews, William and Tom Reints; and many great nieces and nephews.

Gerry was preceded in death by her husband, Melbourne in 1978, her parents, two sisters, Elsa Swan and Catherine Wood; one brother, Sievert Reints.

Dorothy J. Seaton

Dorothy J. Seaton, 77, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Rev. Timothy Geitz of Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars will officiate. Burial will follow at the Washington Reformed Cemetery in Ackley, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Jane Bruns was born on April 15, 1935 near Dumont, Iowa to William and Bernice (Card) Bruns. She attended country school near her home and later graduated from Dumont High School in 1953.

On October 23, 1953 Dorothy and Delmar Davern Pies were united in marriage at Ackley, Iowa. They made their home in the Dumont area where Dorothy worked in various cafes and restaurants. Delmar passed away in 1964. In 1968 Dorothy married Robert L. Seaton in Watertown, South Dakota.

Dorothy and her family moved to Le Mars in July of 1984. Well known for her excellent cooking, Dorothy worked at Archie’s Waeside, Country Kitchen and Lally’s Eastside. In earlier years, she volunteered as a 4-H leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. Later in life she was a Senior Companion. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, especially Pinochle, dominos and puzzles. She was very close to her brothers and sisters which resulted in many practical jokes. Her conversations often revolved around her grandchildren and the joy she found in them.

Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her children, Diane (Rex) Anfinson of Remsen, IA, Duane Pies of Le Mars, IA, Doreen Pies of Le Mars, IA, Roger (Jennifer) Seaton of Suwanee, GA, Rebecca (Paul) Vasquez of Deland, FL; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jeremy (Stacey) Schipper, Alyssa, Austin, Damien and Brendan; Blake (Toni) Schipper, Dylan; Sara Anfinson; Nathan Anfinson; Seth Anfinson; Miranda Anfinson; Madilynn Anfinson; Cole Anfinson; Matthew (Christy) Pies, Seth, Mary Ann, Treyanna, Zade; Josh Pies; Michael Pies; Jakob Spellacy, Erin Spellacy, Sean Spellacy, Audrey Spellacy, River Seaton; Taylor Sitzmann, Zane Vasquez; brothers and sisters, Edward (Randi) Bruns of Minneapolis, MN, Betty (Jim) Wubbena of Bristow, IA, Minetta Jones of Waverly, IA, Marge (Darwin) Freese of Allison, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

Myrtha Ida Rust

Myrtha Ida Rust, age 86, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born March 22, 1926, the daughter of Charles and Myrtha (Arends) Wilmot in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Myrtha attended Clarksville High School.

On August 18, 1942, Myrtha was united in marriage with Herman Rust in Clarksville. The couple made their home in Clarksville their entire lives. Myrtha worked as a nurse’s aide for 28 years in nursing homes in Clarksville, Waverly and Waterloo. She retired in 1981. Myrtha was baptized at and a member of the Church of Christ in Clarksville.
Myrtha enjoyed listening to bluegrass music and going camping, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Myrtha passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Clarksville Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville. Myrtha is preceded in death by her husband, Herman Rust; her parents; one son, Leslie “Jack” Rust; two brothers, George Wilmot and Chuck Wilmot; two sisters, Darlene Jungling and Harriet Westcott.

Myrtha is survived by one daughter, Jean Sherburne of Waverly; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty (Wayne) Endelman and Virginia (Bob) Miller both of Waverly.

Private Family Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 18, 2013, at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245.

Caroline M. Eltjes
November 30, 1926 - January 14, 2013

Caroline Marie Eltjes, 86 of Cedar Falls, formerly of Kesley and Waverly died Monday, January 14, 2013 at Windhaven Assisted Living, Cedar Falls. She was born on November 30, 1926 in rural Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Anna Priepke Garbes. She married Walter (Bud) Eltjes on July 30, 1948 in Shell Rock, Iowa. He died March 26, 2001.

Survived by: two daughters, Doriece (Randy) Stickfort of Cedar Falls and Darla (Dan) Erskine of Waverly; six grandchildren, Autumn (Todd) Penz, Faresse Erskine, Skyller Stickfort, Walker Erskine, Dakota Stickfort and Nate Stickfort; one great-grandson, Brecken Penz; two brothers, Raymond (Jeanette) Garbes of Nashua and Carl (Vera) Garbes of Clarksville; two sisters, Ruth (Don) Fenneman of Clarksville and Marlene (Bud) Mennenga of Clarksville, one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Garbes of Clarksville; many nieces and nephews, and honorary granddaughter, Erika Herington.

Preceded in death by: infant twin granddaughters (Erskine), four sisters, Martha Wadey, Laura Franzen, Louise Grawe and Dorothy Kluiter; three brothers, Albert, Frederick and Harlan Garbes.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethany Bible Chapel, Cedar Falls, with burial at the Hitesville Cemetary, rural Aplington. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls and 1 hour before the services. She received her education in country school. She trusted Christ as her Savior on April 13, 1948 through Romans 5:6. Mrs. Eltjes was a wonderful homemaker, mother and grandma who loved spending time with her family. She blessed others with her hospitality, sewing, baking, gardening and music.


Edna Ida Schilling
(March 10, 1917 - January 16, 2013)

Edna Ida Schilling, age 95, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born on March 10, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Christina (Wedeking) Rohlwing near Clarksville, Iowa. She received her education from Pleasant Valley Country School north of Clarksville.

On August 29, 1935, Edna was united in marriage with Edwin Schilling at the Pleasant Valley Church, rural Clarksville. They made their home and farmed near Plainfield, Iowa. Through the years Edna worked at Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly, Iowa, as a housekeeper.

She was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, where she was active with the quilting and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed volunteering at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home assisting with needed mending.

Edna enjoyed baking cookies and sharing them with her neighbors and friends. She kept her hands busy with mending and doing embroidery work.

Edna died Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Services, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Schilling; her parents; and three sisters, Lucille Rohlwing, Dorothy Dralle and Laura Rohlwing.

Edna is survived by two daughters, Ruth (Loren) Pothast of Shell Rock, IA, and Marjorie (Don) Lee of Hutchinson, MN; five grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Burial will be held in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245 and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Deborah Sue Eggleston
August 6, 1949 - January 19, 2013

Deborah Sue Eggleston, 63, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, from complications that contributed to Hemorrhagic Shock.

Deb was born on August 6, 1949, in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Clayton and Marjorie Mae (Roose) Klinetob. Deb attended school in Clarksville, graduating from the Clarksville High School in 1967. Deb then attended Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo where she studied to become a lab technician, working for a short time at the Waverly Municipal Hospital. On November 20, 1971, she was united in marriage to Richard P. "Rick" Eggleston in Clarksville, Iowa. The couple made their home in Waverly, where she raised her family and was a homemaker (her specialty was making cakes and cookies).

Deb loved living in the country where she could raise and take care of her horses and other animals. She not only loved her horses, but her greatest love was her family, especially the love of her life, Rick.

She is survived by her loving husband of over 41 years, Rick Eggleston of Waverly, Iowa; her two daughters, Kristin Sue Eggleston and Erika Lynn Eggleston both of Waverly; her son and his wife, Philip James (Brenda) Eggleston of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her parents, Harry and Marjorie Klinetob of Clarksville, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Nathan Frazee officiating. The family will greet friends for an hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home. There will be no public visitation as Deb's body has been cremated. Walter Lynn Stoddard
February 16, 1928 - January 14, 2013

Walter Lynn Stoddard, 84, of Allison, Iowa, formerly of Shell Rock, Iowa, passed away Monday, January 14, 2013, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

He was born on February 16, 1928, in Janesville, Iowa, to George Calvin and Laura Gladys (Lewis) Stoddard. Walter graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1945. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1947, during World War II. Walter was a machinist for Carnation Company in Waverly. He was a member of the Legion and VFW in Shell Rock.

Walter enjoyed reading and collecting coins and stamps. He was affiliated with the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. On September 18, 2012, he took a trip to Washington, D.C., on the Honor Flight with many other World War II and Korean War Veterans. That was the highlight of his life.

Walter is survived by his nieces Bonnie (LeRoy) Dralle of Allison, Grace Niemeyer of Osage, Marilyn Gordon of Cedar Falls, Joyce (Lee) Boylen of Longmont, Colorado, Carol Stoddard of Waverly and Nola Jones of Armona, California, sister-in-law Dorothy Stoddard of Waverly, several great nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces and nephews and several great-great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and two nephews.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or North Iowa Hospice.

Burial of cremains will take place in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock.


Jo Ann M. Voss
(June 13, 1939 - January 20, 2013)
Jo Ann Malinda Voss, age 73, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born June 13, 1939, the daughter of Harvey and Esther (Stoxen) Schmidt, in Waverly, Iowa. She began her education in Country School Dayton Township #7 until the sixth grade, and then continued in Clarksville where she graduated from high school in 1957. She received her bachelor’s of arts degree from Wartburg in 1961. Jo Ann also took graduate classes from University of Northern Iowa.

On June 19, 1960, Jo Ann was united in marriage with Jerry Frederick Voss at the St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Jo Ann and Jerry made their home in Clarksville after marriage, where she lived her whole life. She began her teaching career in Plainfield School for six years, and then in the Clarksville Schools, where she taught Home Economics and Family Parenting. Jo Ann retired from teaching in 1990 after teaching 29 years at Clarksville.

Jo Ann was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, where she was a Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the Women’s Fellowship. Jo Ann was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader. She was a member of the P.E.O. Clarksville Chapter I.T., for 52 years, she served as past president and held several other offices. She also did college research for Iowa State University. Jo Ann took pleasure in cooking and sewing for family members. She also enjoyed wild flowers and watching birds. Jo Ann delighted in giving and receiving hugs.

Jo Ann died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Melvin Bohner.

Jo Ann is survived by her husband, Jerry Voss of Clarksville, Iowa; two sons, Bryan (Karla) Voss of Clarksville, Iowa, and Carlin (Kim) French of Gilbertville, Iowa; one daughter, Cynthia Voss of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Justin and Wesley Voss, Brandon, Abigail and Gavin French, and Conner Weber; two brothers, Doug (Pat) Schmidt and Dan (Pat) Schmidt both of Clarksville, Iowa; one sister, Carolyn Bohner of Clarksville, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Paula (Dick) Grant of Waverly, Iowa; and one aunt, Bernice Hoodjer of Clarksville, Iowa.

Funeral Services are tentatively planned for May 13, 2013, at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville

There will be no visitation.

Fritz Duane Dickman
(March 7, 1931 - January 25, 2013)

Fritz Duane Dickman, age 81, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born March 7, 1931, the son of Fred and Lamena (Carney) Dickman in Clarksville. He received his education from Clarksville Schools and graduated in 1949. Following graduation, Fritz began working at Plastering Homes.

On July 30, 1951, Fritz married Marcia Merfeld at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, Iowa. They lived in Greene for a short time after their marriage, and then moved to Clarksville. Fritz worked at Oliver’s Manufacturing for nine years while farming and raising dairy cattle. In 1954, Fritz and Marcia purchased and moved to the family farm west of Clarksville, where they lived for 40 years. After their retirement they moved to town.

Fritz was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. He loved tractors and although farming was his occupation, it was also his hobby. He enjoyed working on tractors and tinkering with anything he could find. Fritz truly enjoyed visiting with all of his family and friends.

Fritz died Friday, January 25, 2013 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, from complications of pneumonia. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister in infancy, Janice and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Doty.

Fritz is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Marcia of Clarksville; three sons, Doug Dickman of Clarksville, Steve (Kelly Allen) Dickman of Belmond, Iowa and Greg (Teri) Dickman of Garner, Iowa; one daughter, Roxann (Reginald) Boyce of Wellton, Arizona; nine grandchildren, Joey, Charlie, Abbee, Melissa, Ashley, Aimee, Byron, Autumn and Jasmine; nine great-grandchildren and one brother, Mark (Bev) Dickman of Clarksville.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, both in Greene.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245 and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Leona Voigts
(August 6, 1920 - January 18, 2013)

Leona Nellie Voigts, age 92, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born August 6, 1920, the daughter of Henry and Ada (Riden) Klunder, in Clarksville. She received her education and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1938. Leona was united in marriage with Vern Voigts. They lived on a farm near Vilmer, and moved to a farm near Nashua and then later moved into Clarksville. They were later divorced.

Leona was employed at Ahrens Rest Home in Clarksville for many years. Later she worked as a cook at Community Nursing home from 1975 until 1991. She became a resident of the nursing home in 2002.

Leona was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing bingo through the years, with her sister and later at the home. She enjoyed the musical entertainment at the home and was known to be a ‘social butterfly’, visiting with everyone. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren.
 
Leona died Friday, January 18, 2013, of complications of pneumonia, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Howard Klunder and Calvin Klunder; one sister, Viola Ahrens and great-granddaughters, Morgan and Megan Sankey.

Leona is survived by one son, Robert (Ardith) Voigts, Clarksville, Iowa and one daughter, Betty (Keith) Holm, Tripoli, Iowa; five grandchildren, Lori (Dan) Edeker, Jody (Rhonda) Niehaus, Kelly Sankey, Tammy (Adam) Kaufman and Lance Holm (Josh); nine great-grandchildren, Quinn and Dylan Edeker, Kenedrick, Kierra and Kinley Saulsberry; Brady Maurer, Wally Kaufman and Tyler and Trever Niehaus; and one sister-in-law, Kiyo Klunder, Okinawa.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery both in Clarksville.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245 and one hour before services at the church.

Robert Dean Gerdes
August 16, 1932 - January 22, 2013

Robert Dean Gerdes, 80, of Allison, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison, Iowa.

Robert was born on August 16, 1932, in Dumont, Iowa, to Dirk and Stena (Greenfield) Gerdes. He graduated from the Dumont High School in 1951.

On March 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to Darlene Jungling at the Bristow Reformed Church.

Robert was a dairy and crop farmer until 1989, and then he worked for AMPI in Fredericksburg and for Sukup Manufacturing in Sheffield. He was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison and served on various offices and committees in his church and throughout the community.

He enjoyed collecting lighthouses and watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Robert is survived by his wife Darlene of Allison, son Daryl and wife Catherine of Liberty, Missouri, grandchildren Levi, Noah and Natalie Gerdes of Liberty, Missouri, brother Herman and wife Donna Gerdes of Stromsburg, Nebraska, sister-in-law Margaret Gerdes of Hampton, in-laws Harry and wife Karen Jungling of Bristow and Betty and husband Eldon Siemers of Mason City, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dirk and Stena, son Douglas in 2004, brother Paul, infant brother and father and mother-in-law John and Henrietta Jungling.

Burial will take place in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Bristow, Iowa.

Darrell Edwin Nieman
August 29, 1924 - January 21, 2013

Darrell "Pete" Edwin Nieman, 88, of Shell Rock, died Monday, January 21, 2013, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock.

Darrell was born August 29, 1924, on a farm in Shell Rock Township, the son of Edwin and Mamie (Sells) Nieman. He graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1943. He served in the United States Navy from January 5, 1944 until his honorable discharge on April 15, 1946. He then returned to the Shell Rock area where he farmed, operated his trucking business as well as a small saw sharpening business. On December 18, 1977, he was united in marriage to Mary Thompson Hoodjer in Clarksville, Iowa.

Darrell was a 66 year member of the Avery-Slight American Legion Post #393 in Shell Rock, Iowa. He was very proud of his service to his country; he often attended Navy reunions to stay in contact with his fellow veterans. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and attending his grandchildren's school and sporting events. Time spent with Darrell often involved a board game, playing cards or putting together a puzzle.

He is survived by a sister; Pauline Jacobs of Clarksville, step-daughter; Jan Phillis of Cedar Falls, two step-sons; Ken (Judy) Hoodjer of Clarksville, and Galen Hoodjer of Greene; 11 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary LaVonne Niemen in 2003, sisters Opal Freerks and Audrey Jurgens, nephews; Gary Jacobs and Joel Jurgens, and a niece, Claudia Freerks.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Kim Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock with Military Rites conducted by Avery-Slight American Legion Post #393 of Shell Rock. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock and for an hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Katherine Kampman
(October 29, 1919 - January 25, 2013)

Katherine Kampman, age 93, of Aplington, was born on October 29, 1919, the daughter of Eildert and Johanna (Haats) Eilderts at her parents’ home in rural Aplington. She received her education at Ripley #5 Country School.

Katherine married John Kampman on February 7, 1939, at the Bethel Reformed Church parsonage. Following their marriage, John and Katherine farmed north of Aplington. In 1985, she moved to Aplington where she resided independently until her death.

Katherine was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church. She dearly enjoyed attending church services and was active in their women’s group. Katherine took great satisfaction in farming with her husband and had a big heart for children. Katherine loved gardening, reading and flowers. She was a great cook and loved to do jigsaw puzzles.

Katherine died at The Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa on Friday, January 25, 2013, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John on October 30, 1983; two sisters, Stella Schipper, Gerdena Kampman and one brother, Arnold Eilderts.

Katherine is survived by one son, Darwin (Mavis) Kampman of Aplington; two daughters, Joanne (Gary) Miller of Clear Lake, Iowa and Carolyn (Richard) Sheckler of DeWitt, Iowa; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry (Marge) Eilderts of Parkersburg and Robert (Doris) Eilderts of Yuma, Arizona; one sister, Albertha Schipper of Cedar Falls, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Laura Eilderts of Marshalltown, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2013, at Bethel Reformed Church with burial in Bethel Reformed Church Cemetery, both in rural Aplington.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275 and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
