ALDEN—Wayne
Surls, age 87, of Alden, died on Saturday morning, September
3, 2011, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls,
following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be
held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, September 7, at the Surls
Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Russell Surls and
Pastor Ken Nason officiating. Burial will be in the Union
Cemetery in Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls, is in charge of the arrangements.
Wayne was born on March 8, 1924 in Iowa Falls, to the Rev.
Hampton and Freedia (Whitlatch) Surls. Wayne graduated from
the Iowa Falls High School. After high school he enlisted in
the United States Navy and served in the Pacific from 1943
through 1946, including the battles for the Philippines and
Okinawa. While in the Navy, Wayne served on two LST's as a
fire control officer. During his service, Wayne also played
trombone in the United States Navy Band. He was discharged
from the Navy in Minneapolis on March 20, 1946. Wayne
married Avonelle Edith Meyer on February 12, 1946 in Iowa
Falls. They made their home in Iowa Falls until moving to
Alden in 1975. Following his military service he was
employed by Ralston Purina in Iowa Falls as an electrician,
the United States Post Office in Iowa Falls as a mail
carrier and Iowa Electric Light & Power Company as a Power
and Substation Electrician Foreman in Iowa Falls.
Wayne and Avonelle enjoyed
traveling and spending time with their grandchildren. After
he and his wife retired they enjoyed attending almost all
University Of Iowa football games, including both home and
away for many years. Wayne was a member of the Iowa Falls
United Methodist Church and of the American Legion.
Wayne is survived by a
son, Russell and his wife, DeAnn of Iowa Falls; a sister,
Donna Grupe of Salem, Oregon; grandchildren, Christopher
Surls of Mount Vernon, Daniel Surls and his wife, Christy of
West Des Moines and Rebekah Clark of Iowa City; 3
great-grandchildren, Joshua Clark, William Surls and Alden
James Surls.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Hampton and Freedia Surls; his wife,
Avonelle; and a brother, Jerry Surls.

Monday, September 5, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital
in Hampton.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, September 9, at the Church of Christ in Hampton.
Burial was in the Hazel Green Cemetery in rural Ackley. The

FALLS—Pamela Ann Pazuki, 57, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at her home.
Per Pamela's wishes,
cremation rites have been accorded and private family
memorial services will be held. The Linn's Funeral Homes
Iowa Falls Chapel assisted the family with her wishes.
Pamela Ann Goodell, was born on July 1, 1954 in Detroit,
Michigan, the daughter of William Robert Andrew Goodell and
Mildred Helen 'Burnstrum' Goodell. Pamela was a Certified
Public Accountant in Houston, Texas and the Proprietor of
the Now & Then Store in Iowa Falls. She was a proud member
of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Pamela Pazuki is survived by her sons, Reza Michael Pazuki
and his wife, Neda Mansouri Pazuki of Herndon, Virginia and
Kamran Charles Pazuki of Sterling, Virginia; her mother,
Mildred Burnstrum of Willis, Texas; her sister, Joanne
Kendall and her significant other, Jim Wetzel of Alger,
Michigan; and Pamela's significant other, Donald Johnson of
Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death
by her father, William Goodell.

ELK HORN, Nebraska—Minnie
"Midge" Irene Vietor, 91, of Omaha, Nebraska and formerly of
Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at
the Life Care Center in Elk Horn, Nebraska.
Private family memorial
and graveside services at the Oak Wood Cemetery, Ackley, are
being planned. The Linn's Funeral Home of Iowa Falls, is
assisting the family with the arrangements.
Minnie "Midge" Heitland,
was born on December 20, 1919 at Ackley, the daughter of
Henry and Tena (Bleeker) Heitland. She attended the Ackley
Community Schools and graduated from the Ackley High School
with the class of 1937. On September 4, 1937, Midge was
united in marriage to Harris Vietor at the Little Brown
Church, Nashua. To this union two daughters were born, Susan
and Marianne. After Harris's discharge from the U.S. Army,
she and Harris lived in and raised their family in Iowa
Falls. In 2007, she moved to Omaha to be closer to her
daughter, Susan. Although she was well taken care of, she
missed her family, friends and church in Iowa Falls.
Although Midge was a pharmacy assistant with Craig's
Pharmacy in Iowa Falls, her joy was being a stay-at-home
mom, who, with her husband, raised and loved their two
girls.
Midge was a longtime
member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, along
with the Rachel Circle of the church and the American Legion
Auxiliary of Iowa Falls.
Midge Vietor is survived
by her daughters, Susan Kay (Brian) Hicks and Marianne
(Gary) Wegener; her grandchildren, Adam Harris Hicks, Blake
Harris (Katie) Wegener and Mark Garrett Wegener; and a
great-grandson, William Harris Wegener, son of Blake and
Katie.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Tena and Henry Heitland; her husband, Harris
Vietor; five brothers, Jake, Harry, John, Elwood and
Woodrow; and two sisters, Grace and Adele.

Royce
Nichols, 57, of Hubbard, died on Thursday, September 8, 2011,
at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, September 12, at the Zion United Church of Christ
in Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard Cemetery. The Boeke
Funeral Home in Hubbard, was in charge of the arrangements.
Royce Laverne Nichols, was born on July 5, 1954 in Oelwein,
Iowa. He was the second of two sons born to Raymond and
Maxine (Dunn) Nichols. Royce was confirmed and a member of
the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. He received his
education by attending and graduating from the Hubbard
Community School in 1972. He then completed his education at
the Des Moines Area Community College with a two year degree
in diesel mechanics. After college, Royce went to work for
two years for Western Geophysical in Houston, Texas, and
later moved back to Hubbard and went to work for United
Suppliers Inc. in Eldora, where he was employed for 35
years. On July 12, 1985, he was united in marriage to Karen
Zorn Mersman of Iowa Falls.
He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, camping, fishing,
going to the kids sporting events, school functions and
letting the kids drive his pickup on the gravel roads.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Nichols of Hubbard;
daughter, Jamie Corbin of Iowa Falls; son, Jeremy Mersman
and friend, Daisha Chaplin; three grandchildren, Tiffany
Mersman of Ackley, Riley Corbin and Kolbie Smuck of Iowa
Falls; along with Daisha's children, Alexus, Maddison and
Morghan of Ackley; one brother, Kenneth (Sue) Nichols of
Hubbard; brother-in-law, Vic (Mary) Zorn of Williams;
sister-in-law, Peggie (Gary) Van Den Brink of Spirit Lake;
along with many nieces and nephews.
Royce was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Maxine
Nichols; mother-in-law, Helen Zorn; father-in-law, Harold
Zorn; and niece, Brenda Zorn.

James Frey, 19, of Ackley, died on Sunday, September 11,
2011, due to injuries sustained from a car accident outside
Steamboat Rock.
Funeral services were held
on Thursday, September 15, at the AGWSR High School in
Ackley, with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural
Ackley. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, was in charge
of the arrangements.
Tyler James Frey, was born
on May 1, 1992 in Waterloo, the son of Brad Hartkopp and
Maria Frey. He graduated from the AGWSR High School in 2010.
He was an assembler tech with Titan Machinery and a member
of the St. John's UCC in Ackley. Tyler enjoyed working on
his truck, hunting, helping on the farm, fishing, his ducks
and snake, bending the rules and partying with good friends.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Tyler is survived by his
parents, Brad and Maria; three sisters, Jamie Adelmund of
Ackley, Kaylee Hartkopp of Ackley and Lacie Hartkopp of
Ackley; two step-sisters, Ashley Hartkopp of Ackley and
Brooke Hartkopp of Estherville; grandparents, Ron and Kathie
Karsjens; grandmother, Bonnie Hartkopp of Geneva
great-grandmothers, Mary Henze of Grundy Center and Doris
Karsjens of Ackley; many aunts, uncles, cousins and
relatives; and his girlfriend, Sydney Smith of Conrad.
He was preceded in death
by his grandfathers, Kevin Frey and Charles Hartkopp.

FALLS—Albert M. Bach, 91, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Thursday, September 15, 2011, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, September 19, at the Church of the Open Bible in
Iowa Falls. Burial was in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls Chapel, assisted the
family with the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to
the Church of the Open Bible, Iowa Falls.
Albert M. Bach, was born on March 12, 1920 in Dows, Iowa,
the son of Sofus and Anna (Simonson) Bach. He attended the
Dows High School and worked in his father's blacksmith shop
until being inducted into the Army in 1941. Albert served
his country as a sergeant in the Army during World War II in
New Guinea and Australia, before returning to Iowa and
uniting in marriage with Maxine Surls in 1945. Albert and
Maxine celebrated 65 years of marriage before Maxine's death
in 2010.
Albert was employed in Iowa Falls by Gade Manufacturing,
Ralston Purina, and Iowa Falls Machine Works before retiring
at age 84. Without formal training, he was highly skilled in
mechanical design, construction, and fabrication with steel.
Albert was a life-long
member of the Church of the Open Bible in Iowa Falls, where
he was actively involved as a member of the orchestra,
served on the church board and led redesigns and
refurbishments of the facility.
Albert is survived by one son and his wife, Randall and
Barbara Bach of Dayton, Ohio; one grandson, Ryan and Anne
Bach; one great-granddaughter, Nova Bach Kulisky; one
nephew, Dennis Bach and one niece, Cheryl Nachazel.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; wife, Maxine; and brother, Harald Bach.

FALLS—James G. Crotty, 79, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, passed away
on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital,
Des Moines, Iowa.
As per Jim's wishes, his
body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held
11:00 a.m., on Friday, September 23, at the First
Congregational Church, Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed
to the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 206, Iowa
Falls, the Iowa Falls Historical Society, P.O. Box 364, Iowa
Falls or to the donor's choice. The Linn's Funeral Homes
Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
James Gordon Crotty, was born on September 24, 1931 at Fort
Dodge, Iowa, the son of Anne Sarah (Rosenburg) and James
Patrick Crotty. He attended the Dumont and Iowa Falls
Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1949 from
the Iowa Falls High School. He attended St. Mary's College,
Winona, Minnesota, before entering the United States Navy in
1951. Upon his discharge from the Navy he attended the
University of Iowa, Iowa City and Northwestern University,
Evanston, Illinois, graduating with a Bachelor of Business
Degree in 1958.
On March 17, 1956, Jim was united in marriage to Susan F.
Bennett in Chicago, Illinois. To this union three children
were born, Stephen, Scott, and Elise. Jim worked for
Teletype, A T & T, Lucent Technology and Western Electric in
Skokie, Illinois and Little Rock, Arkansas, retiring as a
manager. After retiring, they returned to Iowa Falls in
1987. He was a member of the St. Matthews Episcopal Church,
Iowa Falls and had served on the Scenic City Foundation
Board of Directors.
Jim, known for his quick wit and personable nature, is
survived by his wife, Susan B. Crotty of Iowa Falls; his
children, Stephen (Laura) Crotty of Atlanta, Georgia, Scott
Crotty (Shalane Tso) of Iowa Falls and Elise (Bruce) James
of Des Moines; and four grandchildren, Emma James of Des
Moines, Bridget Crotty of Atlanta, Celeste Crotty of Atlanta
and Ethan James of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, James P. and Anne Crotty.

R. Peterson, 98, of Waterloo, died at the Friendship Village
Retirement Center, on Thursday, September 22, 2011, of
natural causes.
Services were held on
Tuesday, September 27, at the Westminster Presbyterian
Church in Waterloo, with burial in the Memorial Park
Cemetery. Memorials be made to the church or to the
Friendship Village Auxiliary. The Locke Funeral Horne of
Waterloo, was in charge of the arrangements.
Edmond Robert Peterson,
was born on March 16, 1913 in Alden, son of Charlie and Jane
Hamilton Peterson. He married Berniece Weber on June 12,
1937, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dows. Mr. Peterson
graduated from the Alden High School in 1930. He was a
supervisor in the Ham Boning Department at Rath Packing,
retiring in 1978 after 41 years.
He was a member of the
Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1937 and served as an
elder and a deacon. Mr. Peterson was a member of
Toastmasters and the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his
wife; daughters, Darlene (Reuben) Drefs of Toledo, Ohio and
Janet (Jim) Ross of Iowa City; son, Gordon (Lisa) of Cedar
Rapids; six grandchildren, Dwight (Justine) Drefs, Debra
(Jim) Asbury, Julia (Tom) Ross, Jeffrey Ross, Hanna Peterson
and Halle Peterson; five great-grandchildren; sister, Esther
Nachazel of Alden; and brother, Erwin (Bonnie) of Iowa
Falls.
Mr. Peterson was preceded
in death by sisters, Evelyn Olson, Erma Rupp, Elva Cecola
and Elsie Crabtree; and brother, Eugene.

FALLS—Geraldine Allen, 80, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Friday, September 23, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center,
Mason City.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, September 26, at the Linn's Funeral Chapel, Iowa
Falls, with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial was in
the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Memorials
may be directed to the family. The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa
Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.
Geraldine Mae Ranney, was
born on March 28, 1931, at her parents' home in Iowa Falls,
the daughter of Harold and Mary L. (Snell) Ranney. She
attended and graduated from the Iowa Falls Community Schools
with the class of 1949. On March 14, 1950, Geraldine was
united in marriage to Ray Allen at Iowa Falls. They divorced
in 1978. Geraldine was a homemaker and had worked as a cook
for the Garland, Texas, Public Schools and also worked for
Berry Plastics after returning to Iowa Falls.
She was a member of the
Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ, Alden. Geraldine
loved to cook and clean, being a neat freak. She was famous
for: great cucumbers and onions, fried chicken, meatloaf,
and ham and bean soup.
Geraldine Allen is survived
by her longtime companion of 35 years, Gilbert Vasquez of
Iowa Falls; her children, Kathy (Jack) Bearfoot of
Charlotte, North Carolina, Mark (Darla) Allen of Ellicott
City, Maryland, Ronald (Carol) Allen of Popejoy, Boyd
(Paula) Allen of Alden, Jeffrey (fiancée, Silva Paz) Allen
of McKinney, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gordon (Bobbie) Ranney of
Yuma, Arizona and Duane (Karen) Ranney of Iowa Falls; and a
sister-in-law, Gladys Ranney of Fairfield.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Mary and Harold Ranney; a son, David Allen;
a grandson, Jason Allen; a brother, Donald Ranney; and
former husband, Ray Allen.

AMES—The Rev. Daniel
Richard Mullin, 56, of Ames, formerly of Radcliffe, died on
Thursday, September 29, 2011, at the Mary Greeley Medical
Center in Ames, from complications of a long battle with Von
Hippel-Lindau disease.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, October 3, at the Faith Evangelical Church in
Radcliffe, with the Rev. Andrew Johnson officiating. Burial
was in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls. The Boeke Funeral
Home of Radcliffe, was in charge of the arrangements.
Dan was born on March 6,
1955 in Bloomington, Illinois, to the Rev. Richard and
Arlene (Wolfe) Mullin. Following graduation from the Bedford
High School in Temperance, Michigan in 1973, Dan went on to
earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wheaton College in
Chicago, graduating in 1977 with Honors. During his college
years at Wheaton, he enjoyed singing with the college choir
and traveling to Europe for performances. In 1985, Dan
received his Master of Divinity from the Northern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois and was ordained
into ministry in 1987. He was able to pastor churches in
Illinois and Iowa before his declining health required him
to retire from full-time ministry. He moved to Radcliffe in
the early 1990s to be near his grandmother who was living in
Iowa Falls at the time. At the time of his death, he was a
resident at The Abbington on Grand in Ames, where he led
devotions for his fellow residents.
Dan had several unique
collections that he enjoyed. He had an extensive library of
presidential biographies and history books as well as a
large collection of vintage model cars and trucks.
Presidential Libraries and Estates were his favorite places
to visit while traveling. He was a talented singer and would
often provide special music for worship services at Faith
Church while attending there.
Preceding Dan in death
were his grandparents and parents.
Survivors include his
aunts, Mrs. James Troxel of Waterloo and Mrs. Harold
Greenfield of Webster City; and several cousins.
Those who knew Dan
appreciated his love for the Lord and are rejoicing in his
life and the knowledge that he is with his Lord and Savior
in heaven.

GRUNDY CENTER—Judy K.
Sealman, 67, of Grundy Center, passed away at her home on
Thursday, September 29, 2011, while under the care of the
Cedar Valley Hospice.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, October 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, with
burial in the Rosehill Cemetery, both in Grundy Center. The
Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, was in charge
of the arrangements.

Dennis G. Mulford

BRADFORD—Dennis
G. Mulford, 69, of Bradford, passed away on Friday,
September 30, 2011, after a long battle with Parkinson's
disease, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.
Services were held on
Tuesday, October 4, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa
Falls, with inurnment in the Northiawn Memory Gardens. The
Surfs Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Dennis Gene Mulford, was
born on July 11, 1942 in Iowa Falls, the son of Ben and
Coyla Mulford, Sr. Dennis graduated from the Hampton High
School. He was united in marriage to Patricia Saylor in
December of 1960. He was co-owner of the Mulford Bros. Corp.
and was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Iowa
Falls.
Dennis is survived by his
four daughters, Lisa Beving and her husband, Mike of Ankeny,
Holly Carlberg and her husband, Dennis of Iowa Falls, Jill
Bosseler and her husband, Paul of Bullhead City, Arizona and
Kelly Eide and her husband, Jeff of Tucson, Arizona; a son,
Steve Mulford and his wife, Kerry of Iowa Falls; 12
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Ben Mulford,
Jr. and his wife, Jan of Bradford; and a sister-in-law, Mary
Jo Mulford of Bradford.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; wife, Patricia in 2000; a grandson, Zach
Bosseler; and a brother, Roney Mulford.
