WILLIAMS—Max
Moore, 86, of Williams, died on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at
the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, March 4, at the United Methodist Church in
Williams, with burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens, rural
Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Chapel in Williams, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Max Moore, was born on
November 14, 1924, to Percy and Gunda (Evans) Moore in
Popejoy. Max graduated from the Popejoy High School in 1942.
Max was united in marriage to Barbara Curran on May 25,
1972, at their home in Williams. Max farmed, drove a truck
for Sergeant Calcium and delivered Winnebago motor homes all
across the country with Barbara.
He enjoyed taking care of
his lawn, fishing and playing cards. Max was a member of the
First United Methodist Church in Williams.
Max is survived by his
wife, Barbara; one son, Dennis of Webster City; one
daughter, Diane of San Antonio, Texas; three stepchildren,
Glenn of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Nancy of Webster City and
Steven of Williams; 13 grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald, Hubert and
Walter; and one sister, Lucille Anderson of Hampton; and
many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; one infant granddaughter; one daughter,
Deborah; and four sisters, Thelma, Mary, Doris and Helen.

IOWA FALLS—Mildred Santee,
101, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2011,
at the Scenic Manor Care Facility, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be
held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, March 11, at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ, Iowa Falls. A time
of visitation will be from 1-2:00 p.m., before the services
at the church. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, is in
charge of the arrangements.
Mildred Irene Trickey, was
born on March 6, 1909, at her parents' home in Hardin
County, the daughter of Belle (Gunn) and Fred William
Trickey. She attended the Owasa Grade School and graduated
from the Iowa Falls High School with the class of 1925. She
then attended Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught
first grade at the Dows Community Schools before her
marriage on March 8, 1930, to Kenneth Leroy Santee at her
parents' home. To this union two children were born, Janet
and Jon.
Mildred was a wife,
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, along with being
a longtime member of the First Congregational United Church
of Christ, Iowa Falls. She also worked with and enjoyed her
memberships in the Iowa Falls Women's Club, the Culture Club
and the Ellsworth Hospital Auxiliary.
Mildred Santee is survived
by her daughter-in-law, JoAnn Santee of Iowa Falls; two
grandchildren, Jaci (Tad) Miller of Fertile and James
(Katie) Santee of Papillion, Nebraska; and two
great-grandchildren, Molly Jo Miller and Kaysee Lynn Miller,
also of Fertile.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Belle and Fred Trickey; her husband, Kenneth
L. Santee; an infant daughter, Janet Louise Santee; and her
son, Jon L. Santee.

GENEVA—Wanda
L. Kloetzer, 78, of Geneva, passed away on Wednesday, March
2, 2011, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, March 4, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa
Falls, with the Rev. Paul Beisel officiating. Burial
followed in the Pleasant Hill Grant Township Cemetery,
Franklin County. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls,
handled the arrangements.
Wanda LaVonne Oleson, was
born on January 13, 1933 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of
Albin "Ole" and Martha (Cooper) Oleson. She attended the
Iowa Falls Community Schools. On May 20, 1960, Wanda was
united in marriage to Donald Andrew Kloetzer at the Grant
Center Parsonage in Franklin County.
Wanda was a homemaker,
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member
of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls.
She is survived by her
husband, Donald Kloetzer of Geneva; three children, Donald
D. (Ruth) Kloetzer of Geneva, Dave (Amy) Kloetzer of Iowa
Falls and Diane Kloetzer of Tampa, Florida; ten
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister,
Aileen Robinson of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Ole and Martha Oleson; her daughter, June
Modlin; two sisters, Marjorie Groff and Bernia "Dolly" Hahn;
and two brothers, Leo (in infancy) and Merton Oleson.

TUCSON, Arizona—Richard L.
Newgaard, 72, passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011, after a
long illness in Tucson, Arizona.
Richard was born in
Fairmont, Minnesota on July 9, 1938 and lived in the Hubbard
area before he attended high school
in Des Moines. After serving in the United States Navy,
Richard returned to Iowa where he served as a farmhand,
worked at Boyt Manufacturing, General Gas, Phillip's 66, DX,
all in Iowa Falls and ARCO in Ackley. He began his law
enforcement career as an auxiliary officer, then served from
1973-77 as a full-time officer with the Iowa Falls Police
Department. During this time he also graduated from the Iowa
Law Enforcement Academy. He
advanced to the rank of chief of police for both the Madrid
Police Department and the Kanawha Police Department, where
he served for 12 years and retired after a 25-year career in
law enforcement.
Richard is survived by his
beloved wife of 33 years, June Newgaard; brother, Tom
Newgaard of Des Moines; sister, JeanAnn Newgaard of Conoga
Park, California; two sons from his previous marriage, Gene Newgaard and wife, Kelly of
Iowa Falls and Paul Newgaard and wife, Sandy of Bush, Louisiana;
sons,
Chris Newgaard and wife, Heather of Sahuarita (Tucson), Arizona and Rick Newgaard of Cedar Falls; step-daughter, Kim Martinez and
husband, Dan of Kanawha; step-sons, Rory Johnson of Belmond
and Eric Johnson and wife, Marilee of Nevada; two
grandchildren from his previous marriage; 11 step-grandchildren; and two
step-great-grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in
death by his father, Otis Newgaard; step-father, Francis
Poole; mother, Ruby Poole; brother, Ronald Newgaard; and step-sons,
Tony Johnson and Ronnie Johnson.

IOWA FALLS—Dorothy Dow,
82, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at
the Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, March 11, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa
Falls. Private family burial will be at a later date. The
Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with
the arrangements.
Dorothy Arlene Parker, was
born on August 8, 1928 at Belmond, the daughter of Richard
Alan and Hallie Starr (Thomas) Parker. She attended the
Belmond Community Schools. On April 27, 1946, Dorothy was
united in marriage to Warren Curtis Weismann at Coulter. To
this union five children were born, Terry Curtis, Madelia
Kay, Jerry Lynn, Karla Lynette and Tracy Alan. After
Warren's death in 1964, Dorothy was united in marriage to
Russell Paul Dow Sr. on July 17, 1975. She had been a
short-order cook and waitress for Jon Santee at the Colonial
Grill and had also worked for Welch Sporting Goods (Boyt
Manufacturing).
She was a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7920 Auxiliary, Osage, where
she had served as Conductress and Chaplain and was a member
of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188 Auxiliary,
Iowa Falls.
Dorothy Dow is survived by
her children, Terry Weismann of Marshalltown, Jerry
(Charlene) Weismann of Iowa Falls, Karla Weismann of Iowa
Falls, Tracy Weismann of Marshalltown and George Lehman of
Clarion; her stepchildren, Cathy (Larry) Miller of Garden
City, Darlene Leonard of Clinton, Mark P (Deb) Dow of
Clarion and Rusty Dow of Iowa Falls; 20 grandchildren; 28
great-grandchildren; and her sister, Patricia Edgerton of
Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husbands, Warren Weismann and Russell
Dow; an infant daughter, Madelia Weismann; three
grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Gabrielson; and two
brothers, Bernard Parker and Richard Parker.

Juehring, 79, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Thursday,
March 10, 2011, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m., on Saturday, March 19, at the St. Mark Catholic
Church, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation will be from 5-7:00
p.m., on Friday, March 18, at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa
Falls. Burial will be in the St. Mark Cemetery, Iowa Falls,
with military honors provided by the Hyman-Peavey American
Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa
Falls, is handling the arrangements.
Don Harry Juehring, was born at home, April 8, 1931, at
Oxford Junction, Iowa, to Harry and Vlasta (Paulista)
Juehring. Don graduated in 1949 from the Oxford Junction
High School. He was active in sports and continued in
semi-pro baseball for the Iowa Cubs and also semi-pro
basketball until he was drafted into the Army Signal Corps
during the Korean War. He married Jackie Pazour at Garner,
Iowa, on February 5, 1951. To this union a daughter was
born, Jyll. After the death of Don's first wife, Jackie in
1998, he was united in marriage to Joan Brinkmeyer Robbins
in 2001.
Don was employed by IES for over 40 years, retiring in
1991, obtaining Electric Journeyman status in three areas:
Lineman, Substation and Metering. He was an amateur Radio
"Ham" operator for over 40 years, Radio Patching calls from
service personnel overseas in the Vietnam War to parents or
loved ones in the United States. He enjoyed talking with
people around the world.
Don was a member of the St. Mark Parish, Iowa Falls;
American Radio Relay League, Webster City; Ham Radio Club;
Frank McGivney Knights of Columbus Council #5835, Iowa
Falls; Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1674,
Iowa Falls; Iowa Falls Sportsman Club; International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers of America; Meadow Hills
Golf Club; and Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, Iowa
Falls.
Don is survived by his wife, Joan Juehring; his daughter,
Jyll (John) Newell of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Corin
Juehring of Iowa Falls and Jayleen High of Waterloo; one
brother, Gary (Cheryl) Juehring of Muscatine; a
sister-in-law, Dawn Juehring of Silvis, Illinois; three
step-children, Claudia (Willie) Waskow of Waupun, Wisconsin,
Dr. John (Donna) Robbins of Iowa Falls and Tom (Martha)
Robbins of Madison, Wisconsin; six step-grandchildren; seven
step-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and
friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Vlasta
Juehring; his first wife, Jackie Juehring; and a brother,
Gene Juehring.

HUBBARD—Cynthia Rae Tysdahl, 55, of Hubbard, died
Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center
in Ames.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 14, at the
Stavanger Lutheran Church in Garden City,
with the Rev. Earl Korhonen officiating. Interment will be
at a later date. The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Cynthia Rae Tysdahl, was born on June 8, 1955 in Cedar
Rapids, to Richard and Joyce Joan Stolte. She passed away on
March 10, 2011, after a strong and courageous battle against
brain cancer. Cyn was baptized, confirmed and attended K-8
School at the Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated from the
Jefferson High School in 1973. In 1977 she graduated from
Concordia Teacher's College in Seward, Nebraska, with a
teaching and coaching degree. She spent one year of teaching
kindergarten in Chaska, Minnesota. On July 15, 1978, she
married Alvern Tysdahl, and together they raised four boys,
Chad, Troy, Blake and Grant, on a farm outside of Garden
City.
Those who knew Cyn remember her for her unwavering faith
in God and outpouring of love for her family as a wonderful
wife, mother, grandma, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and
friend to all who crossed her path. Cyn's passion for
teaching and helping others was evident in the amount of
lives she influenced in more than 20 years as a teacher.
When she was not teaching, Cyn could be found cheering at
many events, as she had a true love of sports, especially
the Rebels and Bearcats. She was a devoted fan and friend,
and used her caring and loving attitude to develop strong
relationships that bonded like family. Cyn spent countless
hours perfecting her flowers and mowing on the farm and
frequently enjoyed antiquing road trips with her friends.
Cynthia was preceded in death by her father, Richard
Stolte and father- and mother-in-law, Clarence and Adelaide
Tysdahl.
She is survived by her mother, Joyce Joan Stolte;
husband, Alvern; sons, Chad and his daughters, Isabelle and Sophia, Troy and his wife, Carrie (and
baby-to-be), Blake and Grant; sister, Diane Nelson and her
husband, Milo; along with numerous other extended family
members and friends.
She will be missed by many, loved by all and not soon
forgotten.

Irvin Ritland

HUBBARD—Irvin Ritland, 78, of
Hubbard, died on Friday, March 11, 2011, at his home in
rural Hubbard surrounded by family.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 15, at the
Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with the Rev.
DeWayne Teig officiating. Irvin was buried in the Zion
Lutheran Cemetery in rural Radcliffe. Memorial contributions
may be directed to the family. The Boeke Funeral Homes of
Hubbard, was in charge of the arrangements.
Irvin Mayo Ritland, son of Oscar and Alma (Mork) Ritland,
was born on November 4, 1932, at his family's home place
south of Hubbard. He attended the Zion Lutheran Church in
rural Radcliffe all his life. He attended grade school at
the Grant No. 9 rural school and attended Radcliffe High
School at Radcliffe, graduating in 1950. After graduation,
Irvin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict
from November 1952 to November 1954, where he met his
life-long friend Marv Herzog.
In 1949, a new barn was built on the farm. Irvin and his
brothers talked their dad, Oscar, into making a skating rink
in the new barn. The Triple-R Roller Rink was a recreation
center for young people from a wide area. Although farming
was Oscar's main business, the whole family helped operate
the skating rink. In 1964, the skating rink was officially
closed and the barn was turned into a barn and used as it is
today.
On March 3, 1956, he married Doris Blome at the United
Church of Christ in Hubbard. They began farming his parents'
farm, located five miles south of Hubbard in Grant Township,
where Irvin lived all his life.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Doris;
children, Randy (Holly) Ritland and Steven (Julie) Ritland
of Hubbard, daughter-in-law, Julie Ritland of Ankeny, Denise
(Jon) Christensen of Slater and Brian (Heather) of Hubbard;
25 grandchildren, Erika (Landon) Wolfe, Vicki (Jerry) Hales,
Timothy (Rachel) Ritland and Christopher Ritland, Kelli
(Dewey) Nibe, Nicholas, Benjamin, Jordan, Brandon, Connor,
Jessica, Amanda, Matthew and Michael Ritland, Kara, Casie,
Justin, Jill, Calvin and Grant Christensen, Kaleb,
Zachariah, Samuel, Isabelle and Abraham Ritland;
great-grandchildren, Journey and Kolbie Wolfe, Claire Nibe,
John and Callista Hales; brothers, Floyd (Doris) Ritland and
Roy (Marjorie) Ritland; sisters, Jane Frohwein, Opal
(Raymond) Nelson and Erma (Harold) Blome; and
sisters-in-law, Arlene (Jerry) Hindman and Jerris Hodnefield;
along with many other relatives and friends.
Irvin was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and
Alma; son, David Ritland; and two brothers-in-law, Glen
Frohwein and Martin Blome.

Abbas, 81, of Alden, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011,
at his home.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, March 18, at the Ellis United United Methodist
Church, County Highway D-25, Iowa Falls, with Pastor Kay
Cristie officiating. Burial was in the Alden Cemetery, with
military honors provided by the American Legion Post #201,
Alden. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, was in charge of
the arrangements.
Ronald Clarence Abbas, was
born on November 8, 1929 at Armstrong, the son of Elmer and
Alice (Gorman) Abbas. He attended the Buffalo Center
Community Schools. Ron served with the United States Army
from December 10, 1946 to April 17, 1952 in Japan and Korea.
On August 28, 1960, he was united in marriage to Beatrice E.
Dietz at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. To this union four
children were born, Raymond, Cindi, Timothy and Michelle.
Ron owned and operated Abbas Plumbing and Pump Repair in
Alden, and had worked for Alden Limestone until retirement
in 1991. After his "retirement" he drove trucks for
different operators.
He loved to fish, travel
and tell stories. Ron attended the Ellis United Methodist
Church and was a member of the Collins-Dunning American
Legion Post #201, Alden.
Ron Abbas is survived by
his wife, Bea Abbas of Alden; his children, Raymond Abbas of
Iowa Falls, Cindi Harvey of Cedar Rapids, Timothy Abbas of
Alden and Michelle (Norman) Abbas-Hayes of Champlin,
Minnesota; six grandchildren, Shannel, Christin, Benjamin,
Jessica, Matthew and Emma; and three great-grandchildren,
Tristan, Meadow and Natalie.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Elmer and Alice Abbas; and one brother, Gene
Abbas.

Allan LeRoy Berg, was born
on May 8, 1947 at Atlantic, the son of Lloyd Henry and Mary
Leona (Ecklin) Berg. He attended grade school at Wiota and
graduated from the Cumberland Massena High School with the
class on 1965. On December 17, 1966, Al was united in
marriage to Linda Lee Linn at Iowa Falls. He was a
commercial printer for Printco in Marshalltown, retiring in
1996. Al enjoyed his hobby of being a model train
enthusiast.
Allan Berg is survived by
his wife, Linda Berg of Marshalltown; his sons, Philip Linn
Berg and wife, Kara of Ames and Daniel Linn Berg of
Marshalltown; five grandchildren, Andrea and Samantha Berg
of Ames and Nik, Evan and Noelani Berg of Marshalltown; and
two brothers, David L. Berg and wife, Paulette of
Marshalltown and Joel L. Berg and wife, Peg of Anita.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Lloyd and Mary Leona Berg; and a
granddaughter, Stephanie Marie Berg.

TEXAS—James B. Emerson, 60, of Starks, Louisiana and
formerly of Iowa Falls, passed away on Thursday, March 17,
2011, in Amarillo, Texas.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, March 21, in Starks. The Robison Funeral Home of
Sulphur, Louisiana, was in charge of the arrangements.
James was born on October
3, 1950, at Jonesboro, Arkansas, the eldest son of Imogene
(Rogers) and Charles Emerson. His family moved to Iowa Falls
in 1965. He attended school in Iowa Falls and then enlisted
into the Army. He was an over-the-road truck driver.
James is survived by his
wife, Darthy Emerson of Starks, Louisiana; his mother,
Imogene Emerson of Iowa Falls; two brothers, Pete (Judy)
Emerson of Iowa Falls and Timothy (Peggy Horton) Emerson of
Iowa Falls; two sisters, Becky (Kent) Thompson of Lawton,
Iowa and Lisa Riebkes of Martensdale, Iowa; three nieces; and
three nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his father, Charles Jr. Emerson; and a grandfather,
Charles B. Emerson.

FORT
DODGE—Paul K. Schwandt, 83, of Fort Dodge, formerly of the
Williams area, died on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at the
Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, March 25, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in
Alden, with the Rev. Jay A. Jaeger officiating. Burial was
in the Graceland Cemetery in Webster City. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Alden or the Alzheimer's Association. The Foster
Funeral and Cremation Center in Webster City, is in charge
of the arrangements.
Paul Kenneth Schwandt, son
of Otto John and Nellie Emma Wesseloh Schwandt, was born on
February 11, 1928 in Webster City. On March 3, 1928, he was
baptized into the Christian faith at the St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Webster City. He was later confirmed there as
well. As a young boy Paul lived for a few years in Orange
County, California, before returning to the Webster City
area where he later graduated from the Webster City High
School in 1946. He then attended Iowa State University's
agricultural program. In 1956, the family moved to the
Williams area where they established the family farm. On
December 26, 1960, he married Betty Grace Nelson in
Goldfield (recently celebrating their 50th wedding
anniversary). Paul and Betty continued farming the family
farm until their retirement in 2001. At that time they built
a new home and moved to Webster City. They later moved to
Friendship Haven in 2008.
Paul was a hardworking
man, who dedicated his life to farming the family farm and
raising livestock. In 1952, he and his father Otto were
named Iowa master pork producers and also that year were
awarded the state master corn producer award. Paul served on
the Northeast Hamilton School Board for 17 years, many of
those as president. He was also active in various community
organizations. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his
family, as well as helping his children with their 4-H
livestock projects for many years.
Paul was a man of strong
faith, which he instilled in his children, grandchildren and
those around him. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Alden, where he served as chairman, elder and
various other positions. Paul was always ready to serve the
Lord in whatever capacity he could.
Paul was called to his
eternal home peacefully, while surrounded by his family.
Those thankful for having shared in Paul's life include his
wife, Betty; son, Keith (Lisa) Schwandt of Williams;
daughters, Leann (Bryan) Baumhover of Storm Lake and Lynette
(Randy) Steinkamp of Ft. Dodge; step-sons, Les Freeman of
Webster City and David (Ann) Shreve of Englewood, Colorado;
six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six
step-great-grandchildren; and sister, Elizabeth Nappe of Gig
Harbor, Washington.
Paul was preceded in death
by his parents; and his infant grandson, Nicklas Steinkamp.

FLOWER MOUND, TEXAS—Lowell
K. Pieper, 80, of Flower Mound, Texas, passed away on Monday
morning, March 21, 2011.
Lowell was born on
September 14, 1930, in Aplington, to Ernest and Alice
Pieper. He married Grace Anderson Pieper on April 5, 1953
and served in the United States Navy and Reserves for over
20 years. Lowell retired from the Department of Defense
Dependent Schools System after working in Europe for over 29
years as an educator/computer specialist. Lowell dedicated
his life to our country and the church. He and Grace
traveled the world on mission trips and visited every
continent at least one time.
Lowell was preceded in
death by his parents, Ernest and Alice Pieper.
He is survived by his
wife, Grace Pieper of Flower Mound; daughter, Lynda
Wakefield and her husband, Bruce of Flower Mound; son, Loren
Pieper and his wife, Natasha of Houston, Texas; sisters,
Ramona Deetjen and her husband, Chuck of Georgetown, Texas,
Roene Lettow and her husband, Larry of Carthage, Missouri
and Ruth Ann Knutson and her husband, Doug of Princeton,
Missouri; and four grandchildren, Bryan Wakefield, Matthew
Wakefield, Helena Pieper and Christian Pieper; as well as
many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be
held on Saturday, March 26, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trietsch
United Memorial Methodist Church, Flower Mound. Interment
will be at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, March 28, in the
Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery, with military honors
being rendered for Lowell's dedicated service to his
country. Memorial contributions can be made in Lowell's name
to: The McCurdy School, 261 McCurdy Rd., Espanola, NM 87532.

FALLS—John Welden, 74, of Iowa Falls, died on Wednesday,
March 23, 2011, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
A memorial service will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 26, at the First
United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Family will be
receiving friends an hour before the service at 9:30 a.m.
The Surls Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
John was born on October
26, 1936, to Neil and Julia (Cole) Welden of Ames. After
graduating from the Ames High School and Grinnell College,
Grinnell, he became an educator, first in Buffalo Center for
three years and then in Iowa Falls for 32 years. He retired
in 1994. On June 9, 1967, he was united in marriage to
Carolyn Prull in Kanawha. To this union two children were
born, Elizabeth and David.
Until a few years before
his death, John enjoyed playing tennis and golf and riding
his bicycle around town and to work. He also spent time at
the Ellsworth College Library and the Barlow Library. He and
his family enjoyed traveling, particularly in his later
years with his wife going to Elderhostels.
John served on a number of
local civic organizations. He was on the Iowa Falls City
Council, Library Board, Park Board and Planning and Zoning
Commission. He also served in many capacities at the First
United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls.
He is survived by his
wife, Carolyn; daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, John,
Beth and Mallory Pierce of Hibbing, Minnesota; a
step-grandson, Drake and son, daughter-in-law, grandson,
granddaughter and step-grandson, Dave, Lori, Cole and Abbey
Welden of Marshalltown; by six cousins: Mary Lou Nuessen of
Quincy, Illinois, Kae Leffler of Birmingham, Michigan, Faith
Enriquez of Seattle, Washington, E. (Skeeter) Oleson of
Dows, Catherine McCord of Iowa Falls and Margy Chamberlin of
Ames.
John's body is being
donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Memorials should be directed to the Israel Family Hospice
House in Ames, the Barlow Library or the First United
Methodist Church.

FALLS—Max Trousdale, passed away peacefully in the early
morning hours of Thursday, March 24, 2011, at the age of 94.
Visitation will be held on
Sunday, March 27, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls,
from 2-5:00 p.m. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on
Monday, March 28, at the Alden United Methodist Church.
Friends and acquaintances are invited to join the family in
celebration of Max's life.
Max was born on October
12, 1916, to Guilford and Otsie (Walton) Trousdale in rural
Alden. He attended school in Alden, graduating from the
Alden High School in 1935. He went on to attend the
University of Northern Iowa and later Iowa State University.
In May of 1942, he wed his beloved, Ardith Cundall at the
Dows Methodist Church. Later that same year, he was inducted
into the Army. He served in the Army during World War II,
fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He received an
honorable discharge in December of 1945 and returned home to
farm with his father. Max spent his life as a steward of the
land, leaving his family's Century Farm in 1995.
Max was a member of the
Alden American Legion for over 60 years, a member of the
United Methodist Church for over 50 years, as well as a
member of the Alden-Popejoy Lions Club and the American
Dairy Association.
The oldest of three sons,
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Guilford and Otsie;
and his brothers, Faye and Merle Trousdale.
Max is survived by his
wife, Ardith; his four daughters, Kaye, Jill, Ann and Mara;
his six grandchildren, Carren, Erin, Ashley, David, Jessie
and Kiley; as well as five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn,
Jacob, Grace, Max and Ivan.

Balvanz, 82, of Hubbard, died on Friday, March 25, 2011, at
the Hubbard Care Center
Inc. in Hubbard.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, March 28, at the Zion United Church of Christ in
Hubbard. Shirley was buried in the Hubbard Cemetery. The
family requests memorials be given to the Zion United Church
bf Christ Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 368, Hubbard. The Boeke
Funeral Home in Hubbard, was in charge of the arrangements.
Shirley Emma (Ziebell)
Balvanz, was born on April 26, 1928, to Ernest and Elnora (Mannetter)
Ziebell of rural Hubbard. Shirley grew up on the Ziebell
faun south of Hubbard, attending the Grant No. 8 School. She
graduated from the Hubbard High School with the class of
1946. Shortly after her graduation, Shirley married Donald
Balvanz and moved north of town where the couple farmed
together until they moved into Hubbard in 1978. Shirley and
Don raised two sons, Dennis and Chuck, both of whom still
farm and raise cattle in Hardin County. The family milked
cows and fed cattle and hogs, in addition
to growing corn and beans.
Shirley was an active
member of the Zion United Church of Christ, serving for
many, many years on the funeral committee. After moving to
town, she and Don made their home into an after-school haven
for their grandchildren and all their friends. She also
supported Donnie as he ran for and served as Hardin County
Supervisor for eight years.
Shirley lost Donnie in 2001 after a long
battle with cancer and within five years, she had moved to
the Ashbrook Assisted Living in Iowa Falls,
where she formed strong friendships with many of the
residents and staff. Shirley suffered a stroke in February
of 2011, and after a short hospitalization, she was moved to
the Hubbard Care Center where she died on Friday afternoon,
March 25, 2011.
Shirley is survived by her
two sons and their wives, Denny and Mary Balvanz and Chuck
and Carol Balvanz, all of rural Hubbard; three grandsons and
their families, B.J. and Sally Balvanz, Cade and Carter of
Radcliffe, Bo and Sara and Jake Balvanz of Iowa Falls, and
Joe and Jennifer Balvanz of Ankeny; one granddaughter, Casey
Balvanz of Ames; and sisters-in law, Dorothy Dubberke,
Gladys Ziebell and Shirley Ziebell, all of Hubbard.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Donnie; brothers, Arlo and Ervin Ziebell;
brother-in-law, Wayne Dubberke; and her parents, Ernest and
Elnora Ziebell, all of Hubbard.
