Phoebe "Nellie" House

IOWA FALLS—Phoebe "Nellie" House, passed away at Scenic Manor on Wednesday, February 2, 2011.

Nellie was born and raised in Lloydminister, Alberta, Canada. She attended the Golden Valley School and on November 3, 1928, married Richard House from Webster City, Iowa, where they lived and raised their family. They moved to Ruthven, Iowa, where they owned a restaurant, and then to Sioux City, Iowa, until their retirement. They spent the winters in Weslaco, Texas and the summers in a cabin on the Iowa River in Iowa Falls.

She was the last surviving member of her Canadian family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard in 1989.

Nellie is survived by her children, Don (Connie) House and Shirley (Dave) Welden; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

By her wishes she will be cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date. She will be buried beside her husband in Webster City.

IOWA FALLS—Arlene V. Fults, 86, of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, February 6, 2011, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, February 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.

Arlene V. Fults, was born on June 17, 1924 in Iowa Falls, the daughter of Arthur Millett and Carrie Greatreaks. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School. Arlene was united in marriage to Orrin Fults on June 21, 1942 in Effingham, Kansas.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Church Circle, Ellsworth Hospital Auxiliary, Iowa Falls Woman's Club and was a 50-year member of the Maple Grove Willing Workers. She enjoyed traveling and going to Branson, Missouri. She enjoyed her garden and had a love for flowers, but her greatest love was her family.

Arlene is survived by her son, Robert Fults and his wife, Judy of Iowa Falls; a daughter, Jill Eggspuehler and her husband, Jack of Omaha; three grandchildren, Justin Eggspuehler and his wife, Tonya of Omaha, Nebraska, Jeni Eggspuehler of Omaha, Nebraska and Jason Fults and his wife, Dani of Iowa Falls; four great-grandchildren, Cyler, Cole, Myla and Avary; and a sister, Dorothy Wilson of Iowa Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orrin; a sister, Norma Lyons; and a brother, LaVerne Millett.

Larry Davis

RADCLIFFE—Larry Davis, 66, of Radcliffe, died on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 12, at the St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe, is in charge of the arrangements.

Larry Claude Davis, was born on November 10, 1944 in Eldora. His parents were Claude and Elva (Wykle) Davis. He grew up on the family farm west of Radcliffe. He attended school and graduated in 1962 from the Radcliffe High School. After high school, he began his career of farming and driving a truck. In 1970, he married Karen Johnson of Ellsworth. In 1971, Larry's only child, Jeremy, was born. They later divorced. Seventeen years ago, Larry developed a special relationship with Claudia "Sissy" Frazier. They lived on an acreage along Co. Hwy. D-41. They enjoyed traveling, watching NASCAR races and his grandson, Kaden's, go-cart racing.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his fiancée, Sissy of Radcliffe; one son, Jeremy and fiancée, Rhonda of Radcliffe; one grandson, Kaden; four step-children, Chrystal Damm, Teresa Phipps, Nikki Stevens and Mike Frazier; two sisters, Marlene Bailey of Lockwood, Missouri and Jean Benham of Stoughton, Wisconsin; two brothers, Ken of Cedar Rapids and Steve of Radcliffe; along with many other relatives and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Constance Louise Blair

DURANT—Constance "Connie" L. Blair, 64, of Durant, died suddenly on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at the Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport.

Services were held on Friday, February 11, at the Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. The officiant was Pastor David Lorenzen. Following the service her remains were to be donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine. A memorial gathering will be held in Iowa Falls at a later date.

Connie was born on January 9, 1947, to Douglas and Gladys (Tjarks) Rogers in Iowa Falls. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School. She married Gene "Duff" Blair in Iowa Falls in 1965. She sold Avon products for many years and later retired from Micro-Surface, Wilton, where she had worked for 20 years.

She was a member of the Wahkonsa County Club and the Durant American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing golf, bowling, dancing and country music. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Tiffiny and husband, Stacy Meinert of Tipton; her sons, Travis and wife, Elaine Blair of Edwardsville, Illinois and Trent Blair of Iowa Falls; eight grandchildren; her mother, Gladys Norris of Iowa Falls; her sister, Mary Ann and husband, George Dougan of Iowa Falls; and her very special friend, Roy Kabela of Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her father; her step-father, George Norris; and her sister, Diana Bozarth.

A memorial has been established in her memory.

Maxine Elma Madsen

ALDEN—Maxine Elma Madsen, 86, of Alden, died on Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 19, at the First United Methodist Church in Alden, with inurnment to follow in the Alden Cemetery. Family will be receiving friends an hour before the service. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Maxine Elma Madsen, was born on November 10, 1924, at her grandparents' home in Shell Rock, to Gerrit and Elma (Coster) Harms. Maxine went to school in Shell Rock and New Hartford and graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1942. On September 7, 1944, Maxine was united in marriage to Vernon Madsen in Allison. Maxine and Vernon owned and managed the V.L. Madsen Electrical Service for 38 years.

Maxine was involved in the Women's Auxiliary, Republican Women, Methodist Women and the Love Circle at the church. Maxine enjoyed traveling to Europe and throughout the USA during the last 20 years with her friend, Howard Greiner of Albia.

Maxine is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Dale) Ites of Marshalltown and Jennifer (Rick) Klaver of Iowa Falls; four grandsons, Adam Klaver of Alden, Jason Klaver of Ames, Aaron (Beth) Ites of Illinois and David (Julie) Ites of Colorado; a granddaughter, Kimberly (Pete) Luft of Colorado; three great-granddaughters, Katelyn Klaver, Lauren Ites and Isabel Luft; and two great-grandsons, Evan Ites and Elijah Luft.

Maxine was preceded in death by parents and husband.

WILLIAMS—Bernadette Schnepf, 86, of Williams, died on Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 17, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial following in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Williams. The Surls Funeral Home in Williams was in charge of the arrangements.

Bernadette Schnepf, daughter of Herman and Frances Wilberding, was born on November 21, 1924 in Sioux City. She attended school in Remsen. She married Bill Schnepf on February 18, 1954 in Remsen. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1993. They lived in Williams since 1978. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams.

She is survived by sons, Joe of Stanhope, Steven of Minnesota, Peter of Williams and Paul and Theresa of Ankeny; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Todd Hassebrock of Williams, Carmelita and Pat Halligan of Fort Dodge and Jean and Tony Amosson of Clive; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; and grandsons, Christopher and Jacob Amosson.

Elmer R. Meyer

IOWA FALLS—Elmer R. Meyer, 90, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 21, at the St. John's United Church of Christ, Ackley, with the Rev. David Boogerd officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls, with military honors provided by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, was entrusted with the arrangements.

Elmer Raymond Meyer, was born on May 18, 1920, to Richard Charles and Emma Bertha (Raisch) Meyer at his parents' farm in Franklin County. He attended the Highland District #8 and Beaver Valley Schools. Elmer served with the U.S. Army during World War II from September 1942 to July 1943. He was a dairy farmer until 1985 and continued farming in Franklin County until 1997, when he retired. After retirement Elmer pursued his hobby of woodworking which included furniture, picture frames, quilt racks and children's toys for his family. He also constructed all the book racks at St. John's UCC Church. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Ackley since 1933 and the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls.

Elmer Meyer is survived by two sisters, Esther Meyer of Iowa Falls and Wilma Meyer of Iowa Falls; two nephews, Dale (Sandy) Ites of Marshalltown and Jerry Ites of Fenton, Missouri; and two nieces, Janet (Larry) Zoske of Eldora and Joyce Davis of Pleasant Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Emma Meyer; a sister and her husband, Ruth Meyer (Frank) Ites; and three nephews, Russell Ites, Charles Davis and Steven Donelson.

ACKLEY—Esther A. French, 84, of Ackley, died on Friday, February 18, 2011, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 22, at the Washington Reformed Church in Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.

Esther A. French, was born on December 11, 1926 in Ackley, the daughter of Henry and Geelke (Meyer) Meinders. She attended country school. On November 8, 1949, Esther was united in marriage to Willard French at the Washington Reformed Church Parsonage. She was a homemaker and had worked at the Ackley Food Processors and Stokley USA.

Esther is survived by her two sons, Les French and his wife, Jo of Alden and Gary French and his wife, Sueanne of Ackley; a daughter, Barb Rommel of Huntley, Illinois; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edytn Ulfers of Ackley; and a brother, Art Meinders and his wife, Marcele of Ackley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; parents; a son-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.

Iva (Lindsay) Lemke

ALDEN—Iva (Lindsay) Lemke, 84, of Alden, died on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, February 23, at the United Methodist Church in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden, is in charge of the arrangements.

Iva (Lindsay) Lemke, was born on August 18, 1926 in Alexander, the daughter of Clark and Sarah (Doty) Lindsay. She attended many country schools and high school at Geneva and Dows, graduating in 1944. Iva was united in marriage to Alvin L. Lemke on December 9, 1945 in Hampton. She was a homemaker and a member of the Alden United Methodist Church.

Iva is survived by her husband, Alvin; son, Ronald Lemke and his wife, Linda of Hampton; daughters, Carol Gradin of Mason City, Marlene Mark and her husband, Steven of Williams, Linda Howard and her husband, Curt of Waverly and Brenda Bradley and her husband, Scott of Popejoy; seven grandchildren, Tracy Gradin, Tara Gradin, Lance (Charlotte) Lemke, Bryce (Josie) Lemke, Macey Mark, Cody Mark, and Jamison Bradley; 10 great-grandchildren, Chace Jacobson, Mike Radcliff, Zaya Gradin, Adaleigh Mark, Kynsleigh Mark, Devin Lemke, Darin Lemke, Carlie Lemke, Addison Lemke and Dawson Lemke; one great-great-grandchild, Hayzin Jacobson; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice Lindsay of New Hartford and Eldoris Seidel of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Russell, Wilbur and Lester Lindsay; a sister-in-law, Esther Lindsay; three sisters, Edith Bobst, Edna Hair and Lou Cooper; three brothers-in-law, Albert Bobst, Lester Hair and George Cooper; and a great-grandson, Zaid Gradin.

Michelle Marie Ford

CLEAR LAKE—Michelle Marie Ford, 59, longtime resident of Opportunity Village, Clear Lake, died on Saturday February 19, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Thursday, February 24, at Opportunity Village, Clear Lake, with Pastor Rich Murray officiating. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, February 25, at the Riverview Cemetery, Algona. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Thursday. Family suggests memorials to Opportunity Village in lieu of flowers. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of the arrangements.

Michelle was born on May 7, 1951 in Central City, the daughter of Wayne R. and Ada Maxine (Moore) Ford. She spent the first 22 years of her life in Iowa Falls living with her parents and in September 1973 she moved to Opportunity Village, Clear Lake.

She enjoyed riding her bicycle, swimming, dominoes, card games, puzzles and participating in the Special Olympics. She also enjoyed music, going to the park and anything chocolate.

Michelle is survived by her father, Wayne R. Ford of Mankato, Minnesota; and two brothers, Lance Ford and his wife, Judy of Excelsior, Minnesota and Steve Ford and his wife, Annette of Appleton, Wisconsin. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Jacqueline, Lindsey, Mitchell, Trevor, Charles and Molly.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ada Maxine Ford.

The family would like to thank Opportunity Village staff for their loving care through the years and the Hospice of North Iowa.

Eleanor Christensen

IOWA FALLS—Eleanor Christensen, 89, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2011, at the Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 24, at the Linn's Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with Father Paul Baldwin officiating. Burial was in the St. Mark Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, was in charge of the arrangements.

Eleanor Louise Christensen, was born on April 21, 1921 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of William Peter and Clara Louise (Hiserodt) Christensen. She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1939. She was employed as a stenographer with Swift and Co. in Iowa Falls, transferring to Des Moines in 1968. She later returned to Iowa Falls, working with George Gibson and North Central Iowa Trucking as a bookkeeper and then with the Weaver Construction Co. as an accountant until she retired in 1986.

She was a member of the St. Mark Parish in Iowa Falls and a member of the Iowa Falls Historical Society, becoming the curator of the Dow House.

Eleanor is survived by her sister, Ruth Allen of Iowa Falls; her brother, John W. (Marion) Christensen of Panora; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Clara Christensen; and three sisters, Dolores Strauss, Jeanne Slatenow and Karen Nelson.

ALDEN—Gloria Mitchell, 83, of Alden, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 26, at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden, is in charge of the arrangements.

Gloria Ann Mitchell, was born on August 22, 1927 in Alden, the daughter of Walter and Alice (Benshoff) Nelson. She graduated from the Alden High School and Ellsworth Community College. On June 16, 1950, Gloria was united in marriage to John Mitchell in Alden. She was a retired teacher with the Iowa Falls Community Schools. Gloria was a member of the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Gloria is survived by her daughter, Vicki Steen and her husband, Chuck of Alden; two granddaughters, Kari Hancock and her husband, Mike of Marshalltown and Meggan Cearley and her husband, Chad of Alden; six great-grandchildren, Ashley Cearley of Alden, Alexis Cearley of Alden, Katie Cearley of Alden, Saxon Hancock of Marshalltown, Arion Hancock of Marshalltown and Gratia Hancock of Marshalltown; and a brother, Dean Nelson and his wife, Vivian of Ames.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a great-granddaughter, Claire Elizabeth.

IOWA FALLS—Darcie Dee Woods Mead, 58, of Iowa Falls, died at her home on Tuesday, February 22, 2011.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, February 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Family will receive friends from 2-5:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. A memorial fund has been established at the Green Belt Bank & Trust in Iowa Falls.

Darcie was born on August 17, 1952 in Spirit Lake, the daughter of Lawrence "Woody" Woods and Ilo (Ike) Dillon. Darcie graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and married John Mead, from whom she was later divorced. Darcie worked as a waitress.

Darcie is survived by her father, Lawrence "Woody" Woods of Iowa Falls; two daughters, Tonya Grisham of Gilman and Twyla (Mike) Mead of Fort Dodge; two sons, Tyler (Tara) Sanders of Ankeny and Travis (Shanda) Mead of Fort Dodge; 10 grandchildren, Ivy and Madison McNamar, Tye, Mikaela, Dylan, Araya Hope Sanders, Dillon and Devon Mead and Lily and Evy Mead; a brother, Rick (Judy) Woods of Iowa Falls; a sister, Penny Woods of Des Moines; and many aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ilo (Ike) Woods; and a brother, Rocky Cole Woods.

Leona M. Froning

ELDORA—Leona M. Froning, 101, of Eldora, passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

A celebration of life service was held on Thursday, March 3, at the Eldora United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Eldora City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora, was in charge of the arrangements.

Leona was born on October 10, 1909, to I.W. "Bill" Moulton and Lydia Louise (Klaist) Moulton in Cottonwood County, Minnesota on the family farm. The family moved to Waverly when Leona was 5 years old. She graduated from the Waverly High School and from Cornell College, majoring in music. She was united in marriage to Merle E "Bud" Froning in 1934 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Two sons were born to this union, Craig O. and Bruce E. Froning. She taught music in the Eldora school system until her retirement in 1975.

Leona played the organ for many years at the Eldora Methodist Church and directed the choir. She also played at the UCC Church in Eldora for 15 years. Leona lived in her home in Eldora until she was 100 years old and then moved to the Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora.

Leona is survived by her son, Craig (Kay); and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle; son, Bruce; and her twin sisters, Evelyn and Edna.
