SHE WILL BE MISSED

Hundreds gather to mourn IF-A student

BY LAURA SMITH

May 7, 2011

She may have been a recent transfer to Iowa Falls Alden High School, but junior Victoria Westfall made quite the impression on fellow students and staff in her brief time there. When she died of injuries sustained in a car crash northwest of Alden Tuesday morning, the entire school community felt the impact of her death.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, Westfall, 17, was driving east on Hardin Avenue at about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday when a truck driven by 56-year-old Marlo White, which was traveling south on Dogwood Avenue, crashed into the driver’s side of Westfall’s car at the uncontrolled intersection. The force of the impact threw Westfall, who was wearing a seatbelt, from the vehicle. She was taken by helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, where she later died.

White was taken to Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls for non-incapacitating injuries.

There were no citations or charges filed in association with the crash. Alden Fire Chief Jeff Fiscus said many agencies responded to the scene, including the Alden Fire Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and AMR Ambulance.

EAGLE GROVE—Matthew Wayne Hill was born on October 29, 1986 in Fort Dodge, the son of Robert P. and Kathy (Gudmonson) Hill, brother to David and friend to all.

Matt attended the Eagle Grove Community Schools, graduating in 2005. He received his Associates of Arts Degree as a carpentry practitioner at Ellsworth Community College and attended the University of Northern Iowa. In 2008, Matt received his Emergency Medical Technician certification and later achieved licensed status as a paramedic specialist. The passion for his job helped achieve the goal of purchasing a new ambulance through fundraising and grant applications. Matt utilized his construction skills to enhance and remodel his working environment - that was Matt - always trying to make it better for everyone around him.

Matt was also very passionate about helping people. In 2006, while attending Ellsworth Community College, he volunteered to help rebuild hurricane-damaged homes in Mississippi as a result of Hurricane Katrina. It was a life-changing experience and from that day forward, Matt dedicated his life to helping others.

Matt enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family and friends. He had. a big heart and was always willing to lend a hand - he enjoyed helping friends with various projects. He will be remembered for his dry, outlandish sense of humor and infectious grin.
