Eugene Berndt

IOWA FALLS—Eugene Berndt, 78, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, October 10, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls, with Pastor Mary Stonebraker officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday, from 5-7:00 p.m., with a Fireman's Service at 7:00 p.m.

Eugene "Gene/Geno" Kenneth Berndt, was born on May 8, 1933, at the Berndt home in Buckeye Township, Hardin County, the son of Kenneth and Iris (Radohl) Berndt. Gene graduated from the Radcliffe High School in 1951, then entered Ellsworth College, graduating in 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, reporting for duty in July 1953 and undergoing 13 weeks of basic training in San Diego. While taking basic, he decided he would like to get into the branch of the Sea Bees. Gene served one year on Midway Island, helping construct an Air Base, over one year in Korea and 18 months in Japan. After arriving home in the fall of 1957, he attended the Hobart School of Welding in Troy, Ohio, graduating in the spring of 1958. Gene purchased a gas station in Buckeye and erected a new building where he serviced cars and did welding for 15 years. In late 1974, he sold the service station and was appointed deputy sheriff for Hardin County. In 1973, he began dating Sandra Henderson of Robertson and on February 9, 1974, Gene and Sandy were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Buckeye for many years and left wonderful memories.

Gene liked to keep busy. He was a part of the Buckeye Fire Department for over 50 years. Gene also belonged to the Buckeye VFW Post #1886, Iowa Falls American Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls Elks #1674, Ducks Unlimited, National Rifle Association and the Iowa Falls Moose Lodge #1331. Gene was a lifetime member of Peace UCC in Buckeye until it closed. He then joined the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Tamera (Tony) Hohneke of Indianola; grandsons, Dustin Hohneke of Indianola and McCray (Scooter) Hohneke of Indianola; granddaughter, Calie (Jesse) Lukenbill of Norwalk; and brother, Roger (Shirley) Berndt of Buckeye.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Sandra Berndt; parents, Kenneth and Iris Berndt; and brothers, Jerry Berndt and Richard Berndt.

Robert "Rob" Cook

NEW PROVIDENCE—Robert "Rob" Cook, 55, of New Providence, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at his home.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 8, at the Eldora United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Vicki Reece officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe directed to the family to distribute to various charities. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora, is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Frank Cook, was born to Frank and Phyllis (Feldman) Cook, on October 24, 1955 in Ames. He grew up in the New Providence area. Rob attended school in New Providence and graduated from the New Providence High School in 1974. He attended Iowa State University in Ames. On July 26, 1975, Rob married Joyce Miller in Hubbard. Rob joined his father on the family farm, then in 1989 Rob and Joyce farmed together on the Century Farm and later were joined by Jared and Casey and their families in the family farming operation.

He was a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church, where he held the position of trustee. Rob and family were Hardin County Fair Boosters. Rob was on the Lawn Hill Co-op Board, Prairie Land Co-op board and an Iowa State University Athletic Booster. Rob enjoyed riding on RAGBRAI, attending the Iowa State Fair and the Hardin County Fair, camping, skiing and the yearly trip to Hawaii with Joyce. Rob and Joyce attended the Iowa State women's basketball games where they hold season tickets. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grand-children and beloved dog, Roscoe on the farm.

Rob's most important role was that of husband to Joyce and father to his two children, Janelle Cook-Guiles and husband, Casey of Union and Jared Cook and his wife, Angie of Union; four grandchildren, Ava and Cash Guiles and Adeline and Laney Cook; a sister, Barb Schwarck and husband, Mark of Whitten; brother, Richard Cook and his wife, Paige of Clive; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Shelly L. Brannick

IOWA FALLS—Shelly L. Brannick, 48, of Iowa Falls, died on Thursday, October 6, 2011, from injuries sustained in a car accident.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa, with burial in the Frends Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Surfs Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, was in charge of the arrangements.

Shelly Lynn Brannick, was born on October 22, 1962, in Hampton, the daughter of Lanny and Connie Blohm. She graduated from the Lake Mills High School. On November 7, 1985, Shelly was united in marriage to Kevin Brannick in Iowa Falls. She was a supervisor with AgWaste Consultants. Shelly enjoyed reading, animals and nature.

Shelly is survived by her husband, Kevin of Iowa Falls; a daughter, Mandy Smith and her husband, Shane of Iowa Falls; a son, Adam Brannick and his wife, Elizabeth of Davenport; two grandchildren, Halley and Kade Smith of Iowa Falls; her mother, Connie Blohm of Iowa Falls; her father, Lanny Blohm and his wife, Betty of Dumont; two brothers, Todd Blohm and his wife, Mary of Iowa Falls and Randy Blohm of Iowa Falls; and a sister, Kim Christianson of Kenyon, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Harold Anderson and Leona Rieken; and paternal grandparents, Louie Blohm and Gertrude Blohm.

IF Woman Dies in Car Accident

October 8, 2011

An Iowa Falls woman lost her life Thursday night when the car she was driving crashed in a ditch. According to the Iowa State Patrol records, at 9:20 p.m., Shelly Brannick, 48, was driving westbound on 305th Street in Wright County, when she failed to negotiate a curve at Wright County Road R-75. The Ford F-350 she was driving spun clockwise and went into the south ditch. It rolled and came to rest on the driver's side, pinning Brannick underneath. She was transported by the Dows EMS to the Wright Medical Center, where she later died.

Also harmed in the crash was Brannick's passenger, Robert Mestdagh, 28, of Iowa Falls. Neither of them was wearing a seatbelt. The extent of Mestdagh's injuries were not listed.

Marie Louise Tirevold

SHERBURN, Minnesota—Marie L. Tirevold, 90, of Sherburn, Minnesota, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family and wonderful caretakers on Monday afternoon, October 10, 2011, at the Trimont Health Care Center in Trimont, Minnesota.

A celebration of life service was held on Thursday, October 13, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn, with the Rev. Steven D. Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Lake Fremont Cemetery in Dunnell. The Kramer Family Funeral Home in Sherburn, was in charge of the arrangements.

Marie Louise Ahrens, was born on March 22, 1921, to Edward and Maria (Mohr) Ahrens on a farm near Estherville, Iowa. She was baptized in April of 1921 and later confirmed on June 2, 1935, both at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville. Marie attended country school in Emmet County and then attended the Gruver High School. On October 4, 1941, Marie was united in marriage to Raymond Tirevold in Fairmont, Minnesota. After their marriage they farmed south of Dunnell in Martin County. Raymond died very suddenly in 1971. She later moved into Sherburn and was employed at Unysis in Jackson until retiring in 1985. Since January 20, 2009, she has been a resident of the Trimont Health Care Center.

Marie was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church and its ladies aid and the Sherburn American Legion Auxiliary. Marie volunteered at the Sherburn Nutrition Site. She greatly enjoyed quilting, crocheting, reading, playing cards, bowling and working in her flower garden.

She is survived by her sons, Ronald (Evelyn) Tirevold of Alden, John (Linda) Tirevold of Sherburn and Dale (Rhonda) Tirevold of Chanhassen, Minnesota; daughter, Judy (Jim) Hybbert of rural Dunnell, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; twin brother, Eddie Ahrens of Estherville; and nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Tirevold; brothers, Herman and Carl Ahrens; sisters, Ruth Senne and Pauline Ahrens; and other relatives.

Constance "Connie" Joy Meyer

HAMPTON—Constance "Connie" Joy Meyer, 83, of Hampton, formerly of rural Bradford, passed peacefully to her new life on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Hampton Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, October 18, at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in rural Geneva, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Sietsema- Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Pastor Chuck Aurand will officiate the service.

Connie was born on February 8, 1928, to Howard and Pearl (Hamilton) Klousia of rural Hampton. Connie was a child of the Great Depression, grew up on the farm, and throughout her life her feet have remained deeply rooted in Iowa’s rich soil. In 1946, Connie graduated from the Hampton High School and attended Iowa State University. Wendell Kasper Meyer and Connie were married on May 6, 1949, at the United Methodist Church in Hampton. Connie was a 4-H Leader for over 25 years while raising seven children.

Their family attended St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Geneva. Connie taught Sunday School for many years. After Wendell died in 1980, she raised the remaining children at home and became an active volunteer in her local community. Connie never retired! Her passion was to preserve Franklin County history. She was a lifetime member of the Franklin County Historical Society. She helped inventory all 38 cemeteries within the county. She was skilled in locating unrecorded gravesites and long forgotten cemeteries. She volunteered at the Franklin County Historical Museum. Connie spent over 30 years traveling the United States and Canada in search of the missing puzzle pieces in her family history. Her family genealogy library has grown to approximately 32 5-inch notebooks.

Surviving sons are Alan Wendell (Patty) Meyer of Iowa Falls, Howard Kasper (Pam) Meyer of Des Moines, Terry Lee (Cindy) Meyer of Palo, Timothy Charles (Cindy) Meyer of Eugene, Oregon and Steven Hamilton Meyer of Hampton; daughters include Wendy Joy (James) Zohrer of West Des Moines and Sally Annette (Jeffrey) Chapman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and Blackie her cat.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; and her husband.

Frederick “Fritz” Fuhrman

IOWA FALLS—Frederick “Fritz” Fuhrman, 92, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 15, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens, Iowa Falls. Visitation will be one hour before the services at the church on Saturday. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, is in charge of the arrangements.

Frederick A. Fuhrman, was born on January 6, 1919 in Radcliffe, the son of William and Clara (Dass) Fuhrman. He attended school in Buckeye. On March 15, 1942, Frederick was united in marriage to Margaret May Gade in Buckeye. He had farmed his entire life.

Frederick is survived by his wife, Margaret; three daughters, Carolyn Cockayne and her husband, George of Des Moines, Linda Hunt and her husband, Steve of Alden and Sue Petrus and her husband, Dale of Bend, Oregon; a son, Robert Fuhrman and his wife, Anita of Bonham, Texas; six grandchildren, David Cockayne, Paul Cockayne, Brian Hunt, Aaron Hunt, Scott Fuhrman and Ben Petrus; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clara Fuhrman.

Rita Smith

ALDEN—Rita Smith, 75, of Alden, died on Friday, October 14, 2011, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Services were held on Monday, October 17, at the St. Mark Catholic Church in Iowa Falls. Inurnment will be at a later date. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden, was in charge of the arrangements.

Rita Smith, was born on March 6, 1936 in Iowa Falls, the daughter of Hargus and Eunice (Brass) Harlan. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1954. Rita was united in marriage to Jack Smith on May 10, 1958. Rita had been a laundry aide at a nursing home and health care facility. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, baking and camping.

Rita is survived by her son, Jim and his wife, Velma of Boone; a daughter, Valerie Gray and her husband, John of Yukon, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Jessica Kimmel and her husband, Jerry and Kristen Gray; great-grandson, Travis Kimmel; great-granddaughter, Kayla Kimmel; and three sisters, Katie Weiss, Rosemary Bailey and Mikki Reynolds.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; and two sisters, Phyllis and Ellen.

Paul Warschkow
February 20, 1923-October 14, 2011

HAMPTON—Paul Warschkow, 88, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 17, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alden, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Carl Albert Warschkow, the son of Albert August Warschkow and Minnie Matilda Bahr, was born on February 20, 1923 in Alden. He attended school in rural Alden, graduating from the eighth grade. He was confirmed at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden. Paul began working for his dad and some of the neighbors until he married. Paul was united in marriage to Jennie Kruger on February 10, 1945, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Parsonage in Alden. Virgil and Margaret Caruth stood up with them at the wedding. They were married for 66 years.

During the first 24 years of marriage, Paul and Jennie lived in and operated farms south of Iowa Falls, near Hubbard, and two farms near Alden. In 1969, they moved to a farm near Dougherty, until their retirement in 1991. After retiring, Paul and Jennie sold the farm and purchased 10 acres along the river in Belmond. During his retirement years, they lived back in Alden, then near family in both Ankeny and Hampton. For many years, Paul also owned and operated Warschkow RV Sales and sold campers, toppers and even used vehicles to many happy customers.

Paul was proud of his German heritage. He loved his family, especially his grandkids. He enjoyed entertaining and visiting with friends and family who frequently stopped by their home. Throughout the years, Paul enjoyed racing stock cars, watching NASCAR races, fishing and enjoying mom's homemade pies.

Paul is survived by his wife, Jennie; daughters, Paulette Johnson and husband, Marlin of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Pam Washington and husband, Edward of Ankeny and Peggy Walsh and husband, Thom of Hampton; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Jesse Wolf, Matthew Wolf and his wife, Nicole and their twins Michael and Madison, Teresa Layland (Washington) and her husband, Chad, Tom Washington and his wife, Karrie and their children Zach, Taylor and Brooklyn, Luke Johnson and his wife, Ryanne and their son Johan Virgil, Andre Fristo and Miles Fristo; two sisters, Emma Fessler and Dorothy Hastings, both of Marshalltown; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ernest Warschkow; sisters, Marie Fisher and Margaret Gebo; four brother-in-laws; and son-in-law, Michael Wolf.

Marjorie Jane Nelson
August 25, 1931-October 15, 2011

NEW PROVIDENCE—Marjorie Nelson, 80, of rural New Providence, died on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at her home.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 19, at the Honey Creek-New Providence Friends Church in New Providence, with Justin Weber, Arlen Daleske and Lloyd McDonald officiating. Marj was buried in the New Providence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Quaker Heights, Iowa River Hospice or Quakerdale. The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard, was in charge of the arrangements.

Marj was born to Forrest and Ida Hildreth on August 25, 1931, in Lake City, the only daughter in a family of all boys. She graduated from the Rockwell City High School in 1949. After graduating from high school, she taught a year in a country school. She married Jerry Paulson, now deceased, and to this union daughter, jenny and son, Dan, were born. In 1960, she graduated from Buena Vista College with an elementary education degree. Marj then taught elementary school in Alta for four years.

On November 13, 1965, two families became one when Marj married Roscoe Nelson in Lake City. She became a beloved mother then to daughter, Elaine and son, Stuart. Desiring a new start as a blended family, the Nelsons purchased a farm in New Providence in March of 1968. Marj was a wonderful farm homemaker. Many, many people enjoyed her gift of bread baking and she delighted in teaching others the art. Marj was also a gifted seamstress, sewing many of her family's clothes. Her workmanship and artistic ability was truly evident when she began quilting. She created stunning quilts for her children and grandchildren and shared her talents with many friends. Marj became interested in the importance of quilt patterns in the success of the Underground Railroad. Thereafter, she was frequently asked to share her Underground Railroad presentation.

Marj was a member of the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church. She and Roscoe were very active over the years, leading Bible studies and youth groups and teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She loved counseling at Camp Quaker Heights in Eldora and spending time there. Marj's greatest loves were spending time with her precious family and sharing Christ's love with those she met. She felt very blessed to have part of her family "just across the road."

Marj is survived by Roscoe, her husband of nearly 46 years; her daughters, jenny (Mike) Wall of Waxhaw, North Carolina and Elaine (Randy) Jilek of Dickinson, North Dakota; sons, Dan (Diane) Nelson of New Providence and Stuart (Susie) Nelson of Elk River, Minnesota; grandchildren, Marcus Wall, Lyndsey Wall, Shelli (Rocky) Schneider, Scott LaPlante, Josh LaPlante, Brooks Nelson, Alex Nelson, Spencer Nelson, Danae Nelson, Grant Nelson and Ross Nelson; brothers, DeWall (Linda) Hildreth of Green Valley, Arizona, Delman (Gayle) Hildreth of Canby, Oregon and Roger (Linda) Hildreth of New Providence; sister-in-law, Wanda Hildreth of Ternecula, California; and many nieces and nephews.

Marj was preceded in death by her by her parents; her brother, Bob Hildreth; and her grandson, Brett Nelson.

PARKERSBURG—Tena J. Molendorp, 93, of Parkersburg, died on Sunday, October 16, 2011, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

ALDEN—Marlow Steinberg, 71, of Alden, died on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 22, at the Alden United Methodist Church, with visitation an hour before the services. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden, is in charge of the arrangements.

Marlow Steinberg, was born on April 30, 1940, to Marion and Myrna (Christiansen) Steinberg in Iowa Falls. Marlow graduated from the Alden High School in 1958 and then went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa for education and music. Marlow was a teacher in Audubon, Gilmore City, Kellerton and Alta. He also owned and operated Marlow's gift and music shop in downtown Alden.

Marlow was a member of the Alden Masonic Lodge and the Alden United Methodist Church, where he was the church organist for many years and he loved to produce music shows.

Marlow is survived by several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

IOWA FALLS—Joan Pomeroy, 79, of Iowa Falls, died on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with inurnment in the Union Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, was in charge of the arrangements.

Joan Carolyn Pomeroy, was born on June 9, 1932, to Edgar and Bess (Grandby) Ward in Iowa City. Joan was united in marriage to Mark Pomeroy in 1950. Joan enjoyed bingo, spending time with her grandkids, playing the card game 31, embroidering, gossip, rummage sales, visiting her children and she loved going to kids' sporting events.

Joan is survived by two daughters, Becky (John) Varcoe of Estherville and Joan (Gary) Hall of Garwin; four sons, Randy (Debra) Pomeroy of Merritt Island, Florida, Jeffery (Debra) Pomeroy of Fairbanks, Alaska, Bryan (Sue) Pomeroy of Shoreview, Minnesota and Mark (Janette) Pomeroy of Iowa Falls; 18 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Michael Pomeroy; and a daughter, Jean Rae.

IOWA FALLS—Ruth I. Newton, 85, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, October 21, 2011, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 25, at the Church of the Open Bible in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Irene Newton, was born on June 17, 1926 in Alden, the daughter of Frank and Grace (Smith) Clark. She graduated from the Alden High School in 1945. On November 14, 1949, Ruth was united in marriage to Russell Newton at the Church of the Open Bible. She was a homemaker, worked at Iowa Falls Poultry and Egg and was a security guard with Burns International Security. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, jigsaw puzzles and garage sales. She enjoyed family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Russell; two daughters, Marlys (Dale) Bahr of Iowa Falls and Beth (Richard) Kaiser of Des Moines; three sons, Dennis Newton of Des Moines, Harold Newton of Alden and Wendell (Lina) Newton of Iowa Falls; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Florance Jones of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Newton of New York Mills, Minnesota and Marian Newton of Peyton, Colorado; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; one granddaughter; five brothers; two half-brothers; and two half-sisters.

Sheila D. (Clock) Robbins

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri—Sheila D. Robbins, 53, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away of heart failure on Monday, October 24, 2011, at the St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Visitation will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, on Friday, November 4, from 4-7:00 p.m., followed with a Celebration of Life at 7:00 p.m.

Sheila was born to Dewitt (Jim) and Joan Clock on December 8, 1957, in Iowa Falls. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School with the class of 1976. Sheila was united in marriage to Dennis E. Robbins in 1978. In 1986, Sheila and Dennis moved from Waterloo to Springfield, Missouri, where they established and operated Modern Turf Control for 16 years. On Valentine's Day 1998, Dennis purchased a Flowerama franchise for Sheila. Together Sheila and Dennis established Flowerama in Springfield and flowers became Sheila's passion from that day forward.

Sheila enjoyed most spending time with family, friends and their pet "little boy" Sidney, flowers, shopping, reading and relaxing at the lake.

Sheila is survived by her husband, Dennis Robbins of Springfield; her mother, Joan Clock of Iowa Falls; brother, Sheldon (Jill) Clock of Springfield; and sister, Starla (Tom) Johnson and daughters, Haley and Brooke of Iowa Falls.

She was proceeded in death by her father, Dewitt (Jim) Clock in 2004.

IOWA FALLS—Floyd Puttkamer, 85, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 31, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls, was in charge of the arrangements.

Floyd Wendell Puttkamer, was born on September 1, 1926, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Lettow Puttkamer. He graduated from the Alden High School in 1944. On July 24, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ruby Bunte at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden. He farmed and drove a school bus.

Floyd was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden.

Floyd is survived by daughters, Barbara Kalous and her husband, Marlin of Alden and LeAnn Olson and her husband, Michael of Iowa Falls; a son, Dale Puttkamer of Altus, Oklahoma; three grandsons, Shane Kalous and his wife, Annie of Iowa Falls, Chase Kalous and his wife, Brenda of Mount Pleasant and Cody Puttkamer of Ardmore, Oklahoma; three granddaughters, Rachel Smith of California, Carmen Mach and her husband, Danny of Yukon, Oklahoma and Lexie Schlader and her husband, Dean of Waukee; five great-grandchildren, Dalton Puttkamer, Kale Kalous, Karsen Kalous, Krayton Kalous and Luke Mach; and one sister, Evelyn (Frank) Bird of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; his parents; and two infant brothers.

Paul F. Hassig

IOWA FALLS—The last spoonful of ice cream has been eaten. The last can of ol’mil stands empty and there are no more beans to throw into the pot. Paul F. Hassig, 84 (one week from turning 85), passed away on Saturday morning, October 29, 2011, surrounded by his loved ones at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, November 2, at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, with Pastor Carol Meyer officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family. Private family burial will be at a later date. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Paul Francis Hassig, was born on November 6, 1926 at Newton, the son of Mary (Myrick) and Francis Hassig. He graduated from the Knoxville Community Schools. He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II. On November 10, 1945, Paul was united in marriage to Norma Lea Conley at Knoxville. He was owner and proprietor of Hassig’s OK Tires in Iowa Falls for many years.

He was a member on the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1674, Iowa Falls; and the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls.

Paul F. Hassig is survived by his wife, Norma Hassig of Iowa Falls; his children, Roger Dwight (Mary) Hassig of Highland Ranch, Colorado, Mike (Mary Weeks) Hassig of Iowa Falls, Kevin Hassig of Clinton Township, Michigan and Mary Lea (Todd) Blohm of Iowa Falls; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Mary Hassig; a daughter, Jane Ann Modlin; and a grandson, Dustin Hassig.

Charlotte Marie Heard

IOWA FALLS—Charlotte Marie (Meyers) Heard, died on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, November 3, at the St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls. The family will receive friends and neighbors on Wednesday evening, from 6-8:00 p.m., at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa or to the St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls.

Charlotte was born on February 6, 1917, to Edward and Frances Meyers in Avery, Iowa. Charlotte spent her school years in Montana. Moving back to Iowa, she met Carroll Bowers Heard in Owasa. They were married on July 1, 1935. During the war the couple lived in Illinois, moving to Owasa at its end. They ran the Owasa General Store until they began farming, settling southwest of Iowa Falls in 1949. They worked together both in the store and on the farm.

Charlotte was a member of the St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Her favorite pastime was playing bridge, which she did until just a few months before her death. She would tell you she loved it even more when she won.

Preceding her in death were her parents; four sisters; three brothers; a son-in-law, Ronnie Murray; her husband, Carroll in 2000; and a daughter, Jeanne (Heard) Hirth in 2006.

Charlotte is survived by one sister, Mary Minnich of Ohio; three daughters, Janet Murray of Oceanside, California, Carolyn Thune of Johnston and Candy Rector (Scott) of Webster City; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Betty Ann Vaughn, was born on September 9, 1932 in Eldora, to Ruben and Lillian (Plum) Pinske. Betty graduated from the Eldora High School. On July 26, 1953, she was united in marriage to Richard Vaughn Sr. in Waterville, Minnesota.

Betty is survived by two sons, Gary Vaughn of Iowa Falls and William Vaughn of Iowa; a sister, Marilyn Swenson of Radcliffe; a daughter-in-law, Mary Vaughn of Alden; two grandsons, Eric Vaughn and his wife, Brooke of Iowa Falls and Justin Vaughn and his girlfriend, Erin Skartvedt of Alden; and three great-grandchildren, Kenlie, Alexis and Carly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Richard Jr.; and two brothers, Robert and Edward Pinske.

HUBBARD—Shirley Ziebell, 85, of Hubbard, died on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at the Hubbard Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 1, at the Stavanger Lutheran Church in Garden City. Following the funeral, Shirley’s body was donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines. Her remains will be buried in the Hubbard Cemetery at a later date.
