WELLSBURG
- Ordean Starr, 87, of Wellsburg died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the Ackley
Presbyterian Village. Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 31, at the Wellsburg
Reformed Church in Wellsburg with the Rev. Todd Rempe officiating. Burial was at
the Steamboat Rock Cemetery in Steamboat Rock. A memorial fund has been
established.
Ordean was
born Jan. 15, 1917, on the family farm east of Wellsburg to Albertus and
Margaret (Meints) Harrenstein. On March 2, 1938, she was united in marriage to
Charles Starr Jr. She was the head cook at the Wellsburg High School for 23
years and was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church.
Survivors
include one son, Kirk of Marshalltown; one daughter, Darlys Rothert and husband
Richard of Earham; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Janice; and two
brothers, John and Herman.

- Sheryl L. Helton, 58, of Marshalltown died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the
Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown. Funeral services were
Monday, Aug. 30, at the Elim Lutheran Church in Randall with the Rev. Myron
Herzberg of Nevada officiating. Graveside service were Monday at the Alden
Township Cemetery in Alden.
Sheryl was
born Sept. 30, 1945, in Hampton to Freeman and Lillian (Tordoff) Radabaugh.
Raised and educated in Williams, she graduated from Blairsburg High School.
Sheryl was employed as a bookkeeper at Krantman Steel and Action Auto for 18
years, and was employed at Marshall County Day Care for nine years.
Survivors
include four sons, Mike and friend Kathy Ehler of Kellogg, Jeff of Webster City,
D. J. and wife Brandy of Buckeye, and Jason and wife Michelle of Marshalltown;
four sisters, Iola Meyer of Iowa Falls, Patricia Bunch of Des Moines, Eva Wepel,
and husband Clair of Ankeny and Phyllis Wyatt of Marshalltown; and nine
grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Irving.

Ariz. - Mildred Irene Camp, 90, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Iowa Falls,
died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Scottsdale. A celebration of her life will be
held Saturday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. at a graveside service at the Clemons
Cemetery, Clemons.
Mildred was
born Aug. 12, 1914, in Iowa Falls to Ensign and Ellen Christenson. She was a
graduate of Popejoy High School and attended Fort Dodge Community College. In
1937, Mildred was united in marriage to Roland "Rollie" Camp. They lived in the
Iowa Falls, Clemons and Fort Dodge areas, and for the past seven years, made her
home with her daughter and great-grandchildren in Scottsdale. Mildred enjoyed
china painting and gardening. She was a charter member of the American Legion
Auxiliary in Clemons; the American Legion Auxiliary in Fort Dodge; past
president of the Ladies Aid of Clemons Congregational Church in Clemons; and the
Cancer Society in Fort Dodge. Mildred had been employed by Charlie Gentle at the
Cut-Rate Grocery Story in Iowa Falls.
Survivors
include one daughter, Patty Kennedy of Scottsdale; three grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Margie Iverson
Harms.

Lillian Mae Saur, 84, of Hampton died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at the Hampton Care
Center in Hampton. Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. at the
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating.
Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery, rural Dumont. Friends may call Wednesday,
Sept. 1, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lillian was
born June 26, 1920, in Hampton to W. W. "Willie" and Olga (Johnson) Harper. On
Dec. 9, 1939, she married Vernon Saur in Bethany, Mo. Lillian was a homemaker,
babysitter for several families in the area and worked at the Hampton Health
Care Center. She enjoyed playing Yatzee and bingo, crocheting and taking car and
motorcycle rides.
Survivors
include two daughters, Verna Mae Humburg and husband Daryl of Hampton and Donna
Hueramo and husband David of Rockford, Ill.; six grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Erma
"Chubby" Hodge and husband Richard of Independence, Mo.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter; two brothers; three
sisters; and one great-granddaughter.

Jessie Georgia Bartling, 105, of Ackley died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the
Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 30, at the
Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley with the Rev. John Butler officiating. Burial
was at the Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley.
Jessie
Janssen was born Nov. 30, 1898, in Canum, Germany. On Feb. 3, 1921, she was
united in marriage to Frank F. Bartling. Jessie was a homemaker. She was a
member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ackley, Ladies Aid, a Bible study
group and the Jolly Elders.
Survivors
include two sisters-in-law, Edith Janssen of Eldora and Sue Janssen of Longview,
Wash.; and a niece, Janet Coffman of Springfield, Mo.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband and a daughter, Mary Lee Bartling; one
brother, John Janssen; and five sisters, Elma Davis, Anna Flood, Minnie King,
Fannie Gordhl and Grace Dohlman.

Irvin Joseph Knutson, 80, of Garden City died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the
Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 30, at
Zion Lutheran Church, rural Radcliffe, with the Rev. Daniel Hart officiating.
Burial was at the church cemetery.
Irvin was
born May 4, 1924, on the family farm three miles south of Radcliffe to Isaac and
Josie (Johnson) Knutson. He grew up on the family farm and attended Concord No.
4 rural school. On July 24, 1944, Irvin was united in marriage to Elsie Smith in
Leavenworth, Kan. They spent most of their working life farming around Garden
City. In 1976, they moved to Garden City. Irvin enjoyed reading, camping,
fishing, hunting and tractor pulls.
Survivors
include four daughters, Joyce Meyers and husband John of Story City, Linda
Hebron and husband Dick of Garden City, Diane Swenson and husband Kenny of Story
City and Marcia Davis and husband Steve of Radcliffe; one son, Roger Knutson and
wife Mary of Hubbard; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandson; one sister, Burdene Stolee of the Hubbard Care Center in
Hubbard; along with other relatives and friends.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two granddaughters, April Marie
Davis and Emily Davis; two sisters, Orva Hodnefield Severseike and Esther
Oehlsen; and three brothers, Arlen, Dale and James Knutson.

Donald "Don" Finger

STEAMBOAT
ROCK - Donald "Don" Finger, 70, of Steamboat Rock died of cancer Friday, Aug.
27, 2004, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls while under the care of
Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 30, at the First
Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock with the Rev. Harrison Lippert officiating.
Burial was at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery where full military rites were
provided by Hoover-Eiserman American Legion Post No. 542. A memorial fund has
been established.
Don was born
May 31, 1934, in Steamboat Rock to Michael and Grace (Folkerts) Finger. He
graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1952. After high school, he
attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, graduating in 1954. While
attending college, his talent for baseball was discovered as he became an
accomplished pitcher and was inducted into Ellsworth's Hall of Fame in 1999 for
his baseball and basketball skills. Don also served in the U.S. Army for two
years. On May 15, 1965, he was united in marriage to Lois Zielske at Nashua.
After college, Don was self-employed for several years, then worked
construction. For 18 years, he managed the fertilizer plant in Cleves. Don was a
lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, where he had
served as a trustee and usher. He served on Steamboat Rock's City Council for
many years and was the president of Steamboat Rock's Friendly Valley Apartments
for low-rent housing. Don enjoyed his family as well as traveling, summer
fishing trips to northern Minnesota, hunting deer, gardening and sports.
Survivors
include his wife, Lois, of Steamboat Rock; four daughters, Teresa Janssen and
husband Lee of Aplington, Julie Morarie and husband Mark of Brooklyn, Becky
Duehn and husband Rich of Fridley, Minn., and Susan Winter and husband Jim of
Fort Dodge; one son, Scott Rash and wife Lynda of Alexandria, Minn.; 13
grandchildren; one sister, Louise Karsjens and husband Russell of Marshalltown;
two brothers, Bob Finger and wife Arlene of Steamboat Rock and George Finger and
wife Violet of Sapulpa, Okla.; his father-in-law, Donald Zielske of Eldora; two
sisters-in-law, Barb Crosser of Ackley and Jeanine Frier of Reinbeck; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in-law, Kenny Crosser and
Gerry Frier.

Willard Klein

OLLIE -
Willard Klein, 83, of Ollie died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at his home of Lou
Gehrig's disease (ALS). Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 27, at Prairie View
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Shirley Hoffman officiating. Interment was
at the Grant Center Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Iowa Falls with the Rev. Denny
Coon of Trinity Methodist Church in Des Moines officiating. A memorial has been
established in his name to either the Bucher Family Scholarship Fund or Hospice
of Keokuk County.
Willard was
born July 31, 1921, in Alden to Carl and Wilhemina Minnie (Brauer) Klein. He was
raised in Iowa Falls area, graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1939, and
received the American Future Farmer degree in 1941. In 1947, after serving two
years with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Philippines, Willard returned to the
farm. He re-established his purebred Duroc herd for which he won many awards and
was nationally recognized. Willard served as livestock judge at multiple state
fairs, served as president of the Iowa Duroc Breeders Association and was named
Master Iowa Purebred Seed Stock Producer. Willard was also famous for athletic
exploits on the fast-pitch softball diamond, playing as a third baseman. On Dec.
5, 1948, Willard was united in marriage to Yvonne Erickson at Des Moines. He
served on the Farmer's Cooperative Elevator board, Hardin County REC board,
Hardin County Farm and Home Administration, and chairman of the board at
Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden. After retirement, the couple
spent time at their cabin at Snow Lake, Manitoba. In later years, Willard
enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. In 1990, the couple
moved to a farm near Ollie, where enjoyment came from their home, church, land,
pond and timber.
Survivors
include his wife, Yvonne of Ollie; two sons, Calvin and wife Patty of Salt Lake
City, Utah, and Mark Klein of Redondo Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Maureen
Lundergan and husband Stephen Tiffany of Salt Lake City, Utah; five
grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Klein Grua of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Ruth
Klein Johnson of Marshalltown; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Allen Duane Stole, 53, of Radcliffe died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in his mother's
farm home near Radcliffe. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe with the Rev. Tom Hunt officiating.
Interment was at Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery, Garden City.
Allen was
born Jan. 27, 1951, at Eldora to Alval and Doris (Johnson) Stole. He received
his education by attending Radcliffe Public School, graduating with the class of
1969. He then attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. On March 16,
1974, he was married to Sharon Risdal in the Bethany Lutheran Church in
McCallsburg. They lived in Radcliffe. He spent the last 18 years working at Iowa
State University in Ames. Allen was a former Cub Scout leader and had been a
member of the Elks Lodge in Ames.
Survivors
include his children, Christopher of Nevada, Curtis of Story City and Sarah
Lewis of Ames; a granddaughter, Masie Marie Lewis; his mother, Doris, of the
Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard; a brother, Morris, of Iowa City; and many other
relatives and friends.

Martin C. Balvanz, 92, of Waverly died of natural causes Wednesday, Sept. 1,
2004, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. Funeral services were
Saturday, Sept. 4, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with burial in Harlington
Cemetery, both in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community or to the donor's choice.
Martin was
born Dec. 9, 1911, in Eldora to Heinrich and Martha Marsow Balvanz. He married
Tillie Aswegan Nov. 11, 1936, in Eldora. Martin and his wife farmed near Eldora,
Steamboat Rock, Allison and Plainfield. In 1959 they retired from farming and in
1960, Martin began working for Bantz Plumbing & Heating, Waverly, retiring again
in 1972.
Survivors
include three sons, Ernest and wife Jean of Shell Rock, Louis and wife Alice of
Waverly and Alvin and wife Dorothy of Fairbank; 18 grandchildren; 52
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albert
of Marshalltown.

in death were two brothers; five sisters; a half-brother; two half-sisters; a
stepbrother; and a stepsister.

Karl Vernon Butson, 89, of Hampton died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at the Hampton
Health Care Center. Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Zion Reformed
Church, rural Sheffield with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating the
services was the Rev. Arthur J. Zewert.
Karl was born
March 30, 1915, at Geneva to Joseph and Wava (Wagner) Butson. He graduated from
Hampton High School. Karl married Lena Smidt on Feb. 17, 1953, at the Christian
Reformed Church in Kanawha. Karl was a farmer, and enjoyed woodworking, fishing,
traveling, camping and farming. He was a member of Zion Reformed Church.
Survivors
include his wife, Lena, of Hampton; a daughter, Joyce and husband John Kelley of
Nora Springs; two sons, Dale and wife Janeen and Darwin and wife Teresa, all of
Hampton; nine grandchildren; a brother, Robert and wife Birdell Butson of
Geneva; and a sister-in-law, Mathilda Butson of Hampton.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Wendell, and an infant son.

HUBBARD -
George Wilson Boeke, 85, of Hubbard died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 4, at
Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery.
George was
born Dec. 16, 1918, in Hubbard, to Simon and Ada (Fredericks) Boeke. He
graduated from Hubbard Public School in 1938. George served in the Army during
WWII from 1942 until 1945 and was assigned to company M 168th Infantry, 34th
"Red Bull" Division as an ammunition handler. His division fought numerous
battles in North Africa before moving to Salerno Beach on the southern tip of
Italy. George received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon,
American Defense Ribbon, Euro-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, Silver
Battle Star, Bronze Star for six tours and one Service Stripe. George was never
married and lived with his parents in their home. He worked at the American
Legion Cafe in Hubbard and as custodian at the Zion Church and Hubbard Community
School. He was a member of the Zion Church and the American Legion Post No. 4
for more than 50 years.
Survivors
include nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Preceding him
in death were his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Esther Lydia Johnson, 98, of Ackley died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at the
Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10 a.m., at
the Presbyterian Village Chapel in Ackley with the Rev. John Butler officiating.
Esther was
born March 31, 1906, in Ackley to Wyatt and Lydia (Humke) Johnson. She taught in
England for one year in a teacher exchange program and was also employed as a
teacher in Elmhurst, Ill. Esther was a member of the First Presbyterian Church
in Ackley.
Survivors
include a niece, Lynn Stanton of Inwood, W. Va., and a nephew, Dean Spencer of
Rustburg, Va.
Preceding her
in death were her parents, two sisters, Evelyn Johnson and Ruth Spencer; and
three brothers, Carl, Howard and Edward.

Richard E. Miller, 76, of Iowa Falls died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 10:30
a.m. at the St. Mark Catholic Church in Iowa Falls with burial in the church
cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
Richard was
born on Feb. 2, 1928, in Williams the son of Edward and Mary (Stabler) Miller.
He graduated from Williams High School in 1946, attended Ellsworth College and
graduated from the University of Iowa in 1950 with a BBA degree. On July 20,
1950, he was united in marriage to Doris Helvig at the St. Mark Catholic Church.
Richard was employed by Citizens State Bank from 1952 until 1986, serving as
president for the last 12 years. He was an agent with Prudential Insurance Co.
and later with Principal Financial Group until his retirement in 1999. He was a
longtime member and past president of the Iowa Falls Chamber of Commerce and the
Lions Club. He also served on the Iowa Falls City Council. In 1998 he received
an honorary doctorate of commercial science from Ellsworth College for his 45
years of service as the treasurer of the Ellsworth College board of trustees.
Richard was also a member of the U of I Gold Hawk Club and had attended most
home football games for 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, family
and playing cards. Richard and Doris loved to travel, spending part of each
winter in Florida.
Survivors
include his wife, Doris; a daughter, Anne Nolan and husband, Carl, of Eldridge;
three sons, John and wife Elaine of Des Moines, Jeff and wife, Brenda of West
Des Moines and Ted and wife Julie of West Des Moines; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; oldest son, Steven; three brothers; and
two sisters.

officiating. Burial will be in the Hardin County Cemetery, Eldora.
Ray was born
Oct. 8, 1917, to Elmer and Bessie (Campbell) Warner. On Oct. 8, 1943, he was
united in marriage to Dorothy Hogan at Iowa Falls. Ray was employed by Chuck's
Auto, retiring in 1990.

include his wife, Dorothy of Iowa Falls; seven daughters, Martha Reed, Dorothy
Rodamaker, Jolene Thompson, Wanda Kastner, Linda Manske, Iris Holman, all of
Iowa Falls, and Patty Lee of Vurmorn, Mo.; two sons, Tom of Iowa Falls and

N.M.- Kenneth Michael Leeps, 48, of Albuquerque, N. M., died of cancer Saturday,
Sept. 4, 2004. The inurnment of the cremains was Sept. 8, at Vista Verde
Memorial Park, Rio Rancho, N.M. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct.
2, at 2 p.m. at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1025 28th St., West Des

Kenneth was
born Sept. 30, 1955, in Des Moines to Kenneth N. and Minnie (Pinkerton) Leeps.
The family moved to Iowa Falls where Kenneth graduated high school in 1973. He
attended Ellsworth Community College and worked at various jobs until moving to
Albuquerque in the early 1980's to be with his family. He never married. Kenneth
enjoyed writing science fiction short stories and was an avid fan of science
fiction. He attended the First Christian Disciples of Christ Church when he
lived in Iowa Falls.
Survivors
include his mother, Minnie, of Albuquerque; two brothers, Paul and wife Barbara
of Albuquerque and Mark and wife Lisa of Gainsville, Fla.; a sister, Mary De
Curtis, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two aunts; four uncles; and numerous nephews,
nieces and cousins.

- Chester Roy Goodno, 95, of Charles City died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Mercy
Medical Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 15, at
10:30 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd with the Rev. Solomon
Odoom officiating. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City
Ceremonial Unit.

born Dec. 4, 1908, at Bronson, Kan., to Otis and Bessie (Noble) Goodno. He
graduated from Decorah High School in 1930. On Nov. 26, 1938, Chester was united
in marriage to Kathleen Anderson at Decorah. He served in the U.S. Army during
WW II. The couple farmed from 1946 until 1974 in Floyd County. Chester did
electrical work for Curry Electric of Floyd. He enjoyed woodworking, playing
cribbage and pinochle, watching television and having coffee with family and
friends. Chester was an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church and
served on the church board. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Floyd School
Board, township trustee and the American Legion. Chester was the last surviving
charter member of the Floyd Lions Club.
Survivors
include his wife, Kathleen of Charles City; one daughter Karen Nott and husband
Lyle of Iowa Falls; two grandsons, John Nott and wife Kathy of Lowden and Joel
Nott and wife Jasie of Ames; and six great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Lydia Moen; and stepbrothers, Alan
and Richard Moen.

Esther
Marie Lake, the daughter of James Scott and Flora Adel [Cunningham] Lake, was
born August 14, 1901, on the family farm in Ellis Township, Hardin County, Iowa.
She attended Cottage Country School through the eighth grade. Esther stayed home
her ninth year to care for her niece, Evelyn Lake Litttschwager. She then went
back to town, via horse and buggy, on Sunday nights and boarded at Mrs. Katch's
during the school week. Esther graduated from the Iowa Falls High School with
the class of 1921 receiving her normal teaching certificate. She taught at Ellis
Center Country School and the Swinger Country School in Buckeye Township. On
October 9, 1923, Esther was united in marriage to Stateler William Dougan at the
Baptist Church Parsonage in Iowa Falls, Iowa. They farmed north of Iowa Falls,
then near Alden, Iowa, and then moved to the family farm in 1928 where she lived
for forty five years. She then lived in a farmhouse on Highway 65 for six years
and then moved to Iowa Falls, living at 202 Thompson Avenue. The couple had
three children: Russell Stateler, Arlo Hugh, and Della Rae. She was an
accomplished pianist, riding her horse to Hubbard, Iowa to take lessons. After
State died on May 26, 1965, she worked at the Alden Nursing Home for a short
time. Esther enjoyed entertaining relatives and friends in her home, the
outdoors, gardening, flowers, travel, and playing cards. She lived in her own
home until her hip broke and she moved to Scenic Manor in late 2003. Esther was
a member of the Ellis United Methodist Church since January 12, 1941 and was
their pianist/organist for many years. She was a member of the Hyman-Peavey
American Legion Auxiliary # 188, Iowa Falls for over sixty years, serving in all
offices including president and the board of directors. She was a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary Past President Club and was named District Auxiliary
Member of the year in 1991 and top volunteer of the Iowa Department Auxiliary
Member of the year. She was a farm Bureau member for eighty years and a member
of the Hardin County 75 Year Club and the Prairieville Club.
Esther Marie
Dougan is survived by her son: Russell Dougan and wife Rhoda of Buffalo,
Missouri, her daughter: Della Rae DeBaun of Phoenix, Arizona, twelve
grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; twenty-one great-great grandchildren;
nieces, nephews, cousins, and her many many friends.
She was
preceded in death by her parents: James and Flora Lake, her husband: State
Dougan; her son and daughter-in-law: Arlo and Valda Dougan; her son-in-law:
Marvin "Buck" DeBaun; her sister: June Neuenfeldt; her two brothers: Floyd Lake
and Charley Lake.

Melissa R. Engelkes, 48, of Wellsburg died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Covenant
Medical Center in Waterloo of natural causes. Funeral services were Thursday,
Sept. 16, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with burial at
Hazelgreen Cemetery, rural Ackley. A memorial fund has been established.
Melissa was
born March 25, 1956, in Grundy Center to Donald and Louise (Schmidt) Ross. She
received her education in the Wellsburg school system and graduated form
Wellsburg High School in 1974. On July 26, 1974, Melissa was united in marriage
to Eugene Engelkes at Wellsburg. After their marriage, they farmed near
Wellsburg for 12 years. In 1986, they moved to Wellsburg. Melissa sold Home
Interiors and Gifts for 16 years until 2002 when she quit due to health reasons.
Melissa was a lifelong member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church. She was a past
member of the Wellsburg Community Club and a member of the Smokey Ridge
Muzzleloaders. She enjoyed golfing and camping.
Survivors
include her husband, Eugene "Gene" of Wellsburg; two sons, Bret and wife Daniela
of Maurice and David of Wellsburg; two daughters, Kelly Jean Engelkes of Marion,
Ind., and Lindsey Engelkes of Orange City; her mother, Louise Ross of Wellsburg;
two brothers, Ron Ross and wife Kathy of Grundy Center and Bill Ross and wife
Claudia of Des Moines; and one sister, Ioleta Blakely of Council Bluffs.
She was
preceded in death by her father.

Wilma Maxine (Wierson) Johnson, 79, of Nevada died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at
Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 18, from
12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Radcliffe, prior to the
funeral services at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Memorials
may be made to the Salem Lutheran Church.
Maxine was
born April 14, 1925, in Radcliffe, the daughter of Milt William and Emelia
Josephine (Valland) Wierson. She graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1942.
Maxine was united in marriage to James Marion Johnson in Radcliffe on May 24,
1947. He preceded her in death Dec. 29, 1998. Maxine had been a teacher in
country public schools in Salem and Lincoln townships for nine years. For 25
years, she worked as the ward clerk at Story County Hospital in Nevada. She was
a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada.
Maxine is
survived by her daughter, Sonia Rae Mueller and husband Brent of Iowa City; two
sons, Steven James Johnson of Radcliffe and William Rando Johnson and wife Anne
of Fulton, Mo.; six granddaughters, Heather Johnson, Courtney Johnson, Lindsay
Mueller Kain, Megan Mueller, Signe Mueller and Kari Mueller; two sisters, Thelma
Elwick of Radcliffe and Janet Hadley of Union; and one brother, Wallace Wierson
of Excelsior, Minn.
Maxine was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Orlan Thomas Wierson;
and a sister, Grace Tvedt.
The family
will receive guests at the home of Steven Johnson in Radcliffe following the
funeral luncheon.

Winifred "Winnie" Niven Huisman, 87, of Wellsburg died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004,
at the Ackley Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services were Monday,
Sept. 20, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church with the Rev. Todd Rempe officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Winnie was
born Nov. 13, 1916, to William and Anna (Frees) Niven in Hampton. She received
her education in the Hampton School System, and graduated from Hampton High
School in 1935. Winnie moved to the Wellsburg area in 1935 and worked for
several area residents. On Sept. 1, 1940, she was united in marriage to Tyle
Huisman in Ely. Winnie taught school for one year and was employed by
Plastronics in Grundy Center for 18½
years. Tyle died April 21, 1996. For the past seven years she has lived at the
Ackley Presbyterian Village. Winnie enjoyed making crafts and singing.
Survivors
include one son, Keith Huisman and wife Ruth of Lowell, Ark.; three
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Pat and Albert
Niven; and three sisters, Ann Estep, Kate Woodley and Letha Douglas.

Paul Andrew Hovenga Jr., 37, of Hampton died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at his home
in Hampton. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 1:30 p.m. the First
Christian Church in Hampton with the Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will be
in the Hampton Cemetery.
Paul was born
Nov. 15, 1966, in Hampton to Paul A. and Jeri (Endriss) Hovenga. He was raised
in the Hampton area and educated in the Hampton School System. On Sept. 18,
2003, Paul was united in marriage to Laura Wickwire in Hampton. He was a welder
at Seabee's and a bartender at Pit Row Pub in Hampton. Paul was a member of the
First Christian Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, biking and being with and
helping people. The Denver Broncos and Pink Floyd were among his favorites, as
was playing catch with his son.

include his wife, Laura, of Hampton; two sons, Paul Hovenga III of Hampton and
Anthony of Denver, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Tessa and Terra Rooney of Hampton;
his parents, Paul and Jeri Hovenga of Hampton; two sisters, Sharon Whipple and
husband Matt of Hampton and Chas Ries and husband Bob of Armstrong; one brother,
John Hovenga of Hampton; and his paternal grandmother, Lorraine Manatt of

He was

Community College and Drake University. Myrtle was united in marriage to John
Brass and later divorced. Her second marriage was to Norman Lehman and later
divorced. Myrtle was a teacher. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal
Church, BPW, EAA and the National Education Association.

Lynette of Fort Worth, Texas; one daughter, Mary Jane Bjornson and husband Fred

Nev. - Connie J. Hansen, 60, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004. No

Connie was
born Aug. 29, 1944, in Texas to Robert and Norma (Boggs) Boswell. She was a
resident of Las Vegas for 43 years. Connie attended cosmetology school and was a
cosmetologist for several years. For the past 15 years, she has run her own
company, P & C Dolls, that specialized in handcrafted, one-of-a-kind porcelain
dolls, room boxes and unique artisan handcrafted items, all designed and
handcrafted by Connie and her husband, Pat.

include her husband, Pat Hansen; one daughter, Dee Dee (Campbell) Degani and
husband Tony of Lake In the Hills, Ill.; one son, Ross Campbell and wife Claire
of Berlin, Germany; one sister, Phyllis Allen of Iowa Falls; and six

Arthur "Art" Lee Shugar, 74, of Storm Lake died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Mercy
Medical Center in Sioux City. Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 23, at the
Church of Christ in Storm Lake with the Rev. Jack Barber officiating. Burial
will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Military rites were
by the Storm Lake AmVets Post No. 66.
Art was born
April 27, 1930, in Williams to Edward and Eva Marie (Baker) Shugar. He lived
there for two years, until the family moved, living in the Iowa Falls and Ackley
area. In 1949, Art graduated from Iowa Falls High School. After graduation he
took a job in Cedar Falls that took him to Storm Lake in 1951. On Feb. 4, 1952,
Art was united in marriage to Helen Hansen. A year later, he was drafted into
the Army, serving from Texas to Pennsylvania. Following his discharge, he
returned to Storm Lake and during his lifetime worked in New Hartford, Council
Bluffs, Fort Dodge, and once again, Storm Lake, with a few winters spent in New
Mexico. Art was a member of the Church of Christ, serving in many capacities.
Survivors
include his wife, Helen, of Storm Lake; his children, Pamela Condon and husband
Tom of Fort Dodge, Edward and wife Anne of Sioux Rapids, Craig of Lantana, Fla.,
Jeffrey and wife Kim of Storm Lake, and Kevin of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one
brother, Mike Martin of Arcata, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and one sister, Rita
Shugar of Storm Lake.

Gertie Melinda Knutson, 107, of Story City, formerly of Radcliffe, died
Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services were
Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe with the Rev.
Daniel Hart and Chaplain Sandy Anenson officiating. Interment was at the
Radcliffe Cemetery in Radcliffe.
Gertie was
born Sept. 7, 1897, in Helmer, Ill., to Torres and Ann (Ellertson) Bjerkestrand.
She was 4½
years old when her family moved to a farm northwest of Radcliffe. Gertie
attended country school through the eighth grade, graduated valedictorian from
Radcliffe High School in 1918, and graduated from the Lutheran Bible Institute
in Minneapolis, Minn. On Oct. 19, 1935, she was united in marriage to B. C.
Knutson. Gertie became an instant mother and dedicated her life's occupation as
a mother to B. C.'s three children. They lived on the Knutson farm from 1935
until 1952, when they moved to Radcliffe. She enjoyed gardening and growing
flowers. In 1994, Gertie became a resident of Bethany Manor.
Survivors
include her two sons, the Rev. Glennys Knutson and wife Margaret of Austin,
Minn., and Caleb Knutson and wife Lois of Radcliffe; one daughter, Rhoda
Oscarson of Long Beach, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and
one great-great-grandson; and many other relatives and friends.
She was

Vivian A. Smith, 72, of Iowa Falls died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 24, at St.
Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with the Rev. David Splett and the Rev. Tim Booth
officiating. Burial was in the Eldora City Cemetery.
Vivian was
born July 21, 1932, in Mason City to Verne and Helen (Janssen) Awe. She
graduated form Iowa Falls High School in 1949. She worked as a telephone
operator for Bell Telephone after high school. On March 2, 1958, she was united
in marriage to Carroll L. Smith at Eldora. The couple farmed in the Owasa area.
Vivian was employed by Riverside Book and Bible in Iowa Falls between 1986 and
1996. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was active with the
Ladies Aid, the Owasa ladies "Do Nothing Group" and an area couple's birthday
club. Vivian enjoyed attending her grandchildren's sporting events and camping
at Beed's Lake near Hampton.

include her husband, Carroll; one son, David Smith and wife Nicki of Iowa Falls;
one daughter, Jane Knutson and husband Kevin of Iowa Falls; and four
grandchildren, Kandace and Clint Knutson and Trevor and Caleb Smith.

Franklin County country schools. On Aug. 14, 1959, Kenneth was united in
marriage to Bonnie Muldoon in Mason City. The couple farmed. He enjoyed spending
time with his grandchildren. Kenneth was a member of the Hampton Gospel Hall.

11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, John of Cole Valley,
Ill., Harvey of Hampton and Robert of Clarion; and one sister, Marian Meinberg
of Geneva.
He was
preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carl.

STEAMBOAT
ROCK - Ervin W. Readout, 77, of Steamboat Rock died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004,
while visiting family in Elkhart, Ind. Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 28,
at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock with the Rev. Bruce Baillie
officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.
Ervin was
born Feb. 5, 1927, in Buchanan County to Benjamin and Trena (Koch) Readout. He
was raised in Steamboat Rock where he graduated from high school in 1945. Ervin
was a veteran of WW II, serving as a clerk and medic in the U.S. Army from 1946
until 1947. On Sept. 14, 1952, he was united in marriage to Mathilda "Topsy"
Jane Tresemer in Eldora. Ervin farmed near Steamboat Rock until 1965, then went
to work for Mid-Equipment in Grundy Center, where he worked for 20 years. He was
then self-employed as a roofer, and also worked for Mid-Equipment in Grundy
Center, Monfort in Marshalltown and various other jobs. He retired from Monfort
in 1988. Ervin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock
and the Marshalltown Senior Citizen's Center. He enjoyed outdoor activities
including hunting, fishing, target shooting and horses, and especially camping
and traveling.
Survivors
include his best friend and companion, Betty "B. J." Himes of Marshalltown;
three daughters, Becky Cheyne and husband Chris of Virginia Beach, Va., Sally
Hastert and husband Francis of Darlington, Wis., and Vettre Wood and husband
Shane of Eldora; one son, William Readout of Steamboat Rock; one sister, Bessie
Clay of Elkhart, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his wife in 1985; his parents; one sister, Ellen Readout;
three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Clifford; and a great-grandchild, Dorian
Elliott.
Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora was in charge of arrangements.

LODI, Calif.
- Edna Mae "Eddie" Janssen Inoshita of Lodi, Calif., died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004.
A private graveside service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Cherokee Memorial
Park with Deacon Don Bo of St. Anne's Catholic Church officiating.
Eddie was a
native of Burkmere, S.D., and moved to a farm south of Iowa Falls and attended
school in Owasa. She graduated from Eldora High School. She moved in 1945 to
California where she married Marion Sada Inoshita. Eddie was a member of St.
Anne's Catholic Church in Lodi and enjoyed gardening. Prior to retiring, she was
employed by Wright's Stationary Store in Lodi for 10 years as a clerk.
Survivors
include two sisters, Anna and Eillene; and a number of nieces and nephews,
including James Radell of Eldora.
She was
preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 17, 2002; and by her parents, Albert
and Freda (Dufloth) Janssen.
Cherokee
Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
