IOWA FALLS -
Russell M. Cooper, 71, of Iowa Falls died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 3, at
1:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe with the Rev. Dan Hart
officiating. There will be a committal service Friday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. at the
Northlawn Memory Gardens in Iowa Falls.
Russell was
born Feb. 22, 1933, in Dows, the son of George and Leilah (Lindsay) Cooper. He
attended schools in Dows and CAL. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
War. On Nov. 26, 1955, he was united in marriage to Sheila Snater in Princeton,
Mo. He married his second wife, Ilene Kumrow, on June 6, 1997, at Our Savior's
Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. Russell had worked at Ralston Purina, operated
Cooper and Bruns Tree Service and later Cooper Services. He was a member of the
Iowa Falls Elks Club BPOE No. 1674, of which he was past exalted ruler, and
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 of Iowa Falls. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors
include wife Ilene of Hubbard; daughter Rhonda Cooper of Mason City; two sons,
Christopher Cooper and wife Tamera of Iowa Falls, and Michael Cooper and wife
Carrie of Alden; two stepsons, Reg Kumrow and wife Holly of Omaha, Texas, and
Dan Kumrow and wife Tammy of Hubbard; stepdaughter Sandra Heuer and husband
David of Rock Valley; and 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was
preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Don, Clayton and Bob
Cooper.

ACKLEY-Raymond DeVries, 88, of Ackley died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at the
Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Private family graveside services were held
Saturday, Oct. 30, at Oak Wood Cemetery in Ackley with the Rev. John Butler of
the First Presbyterian Church of Ackley officiating. Memorials may be directed
to the family in care of his wife: K. Muriel DeVries, 1111 2nd Ave., Ackley,
Iowa, 50601.
Raymond was
born Dec. 5, 1915, in Ackley, the son of Ben and Anna (Frerichs) DeVries. He
attended rural a Butler County country school. On Jan. 20, 1937, he was united
in marriage to Kathryn Muriel Miller at St. Peters Church in Wellsburg. They
farmed northeast of Ackley in Butler County, retiring in 1999. Raymond also
owned DeVries Gravel in Ackley. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church
of Ackley and had earlier been an elder of the Christian Reformed Church in
Austinville.
Survivors
include his wife, K. Muriel DeVries of Ackley; four children, LaDonna Potts and
husband Lyle of Salem, Ore., Keith and wife Barbara of Ackley, Dallas and wife
Beverly of Hampton, and Adella Nelson and husband Gary of De Soto; 10
grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Terspta and husband
Ralph of Ackley; and three sisters-in-law, Elsie DeVries of Ackley, Leola Abels
of Holland and Miriam Miller of Ackley.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Angie Waltjes; two sisters; and
two brothers.

FALLS-James Butler See, 84, of Iowa Falls passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at
the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be Wednesday,
Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel with the Rev.
Harrison Lippert of the First Baptist Church of Steamboat Rock officiating.
Burial will follow at the Berlin Jackson Township Cemetery in Owasa. Military
honors will be provided by the Walter Sayer American Legion Post No. 182 and the
Roll-Harless Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3974, both of Eldora. Memorials may
be directed to the family.
James was
born Feb. 17, 1920, in Laurens, the son of Charles Everett Leslie and Madeline
(Butler) See. He attended the Laurens Community Schools, graduating with the
class of 1938. He then served with the U.S. Army during World War II for five
years. After the war he attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, receiving a
lifetime teaching degree. On May 19, 1946, Jim was united in marriage to Norma
June Baker at the Berlin Community Church in Owasa. Jim taught schools in
Primghar, Owasa and Steamboat Rock, where he also coached girls' basketball and
track, retiring in 1977. He farmed from 1954 to 1982, and was a bookkeeper for
Miller Lumber Yards of Owasa and Iowa Falls. He was a Jackson Township trustee
for 17 years. Jim was a 60-year member of the Walter Sayer American Legion Post
No. 182 and a life member of the Roll-Harless Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.
3974, both of Eldora. He enjoyed fixing things and anything sports related, even
the Cubs.
Survivors
include his children, James A. "Sam" See of Iowa Falls and Jane A. "Suzie"
Kramer of Steamboat Rock; four grandchildren, Shawn Marie Schutt of Clarion, Amy
R. Blythe and husband Vaughn of Center Point, Mark A. See and wife Deborah of
Clive, and Tammy M. Michaelson and husband Greg of Alden; and six
great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two sisters, Pat Carroll and
Betty Whitney.

- Harold William Gatton, 86, of Iowa Falls died of natural causes at his home
Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004.
Funeral
services were Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton
with the Rev. Herb Kenyon officiating. Burial followed at the Hampton Cemetery.
Harold was
born June 11, 1918, in Murray County, Minn., to Harry and Josie (Folsom) Gatton.
On April 5, 1946, he was united in marriage to Hazel Jenkinson in Lone Rock.
Harold was a farmer who enjoyed watching cowboy western movies.
Survivors
include two sons, Daniel Gatton of Mason City and Timothy Gatton of Louisville,
Ky.; daughter Peggy Forry of Iowa Falls; sister Hazel Woods of Sheffield;
brother Kenneth Gatton of Algona; and 15 grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter, two sons, three
brothers, five sisters and two grandchildren.

Nell E. Love, 96, of Iowa Falls died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Heritage Care
Center. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 1, at the First United Methodist
Church of Iowa Falls with the Rev. Don Preston officiating. Burial followed in
the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.
Nell was born
July 3, 1908, in rural Eldora, the daughter of Barnett Luther and Tina (Frazer)
Weatherman. She attended rural Iowa Falls schools and on Nov. 10, 1928, she was
united in marriage with James Wilbur Love in the Methodist parsonage in Grundy
Center. Nell was a homemaker and a 50-year member of the First United Methodist
Church. She was also a member of her church's Rachel Circle and the American
Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors
include daughter Sherry Kerns and husband John of Oelwein; five grandchildren,
Rick Love of Las Vegas, Nev., Joy Love of Minneapolis, Minn., Barton Love and
wife Diane of Iowa Falls, Lisa Novak and husband Paul of McKinney, Texas, and
Mike Kerns and wife Brooke of Oelwein; one great-grandchild, Danette Love of
Pella; and one sister, Hazel Koehler of Conrad.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Richard Love in 1973;
eight brothers; one sister; and several nieces and nephews.

RADCLIFFE-Harold Clifford Maakestad, 79, of Radcliffe died Wednesday, Oct. 27,
2004. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 30, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church
in Radcliffe with the Rev. Marvin Dooley officiating. Interment followed in the
Radcliffe Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post No. 317 of
Radcliffe.
Clifford was
born Nov. 15, 1924, to Leonard and Mabel (Hinderaker) Maakestad on a farm
northwest of Radcliffe. He attended country school and graduated from Radcliffe
High School in 1942. After graduating he assisted his father in farming until he
was called to the service. He spent one year in Japan with the occupational
forces. Upon his return he started farming northwest of Radcliffe. During this
time he spent many years on the ASC Township Committee. On Dec. 31, 1950, he was
united in marriage to Jackie Popejoy in Bethany Lutheran Church of Radcliffe. To
this union four children were born, and the couple also raised Jackie's niece as
their own. They farmed northwest of Radcliffe until retiring. Then in 1988, they
moved into Radcliffe. As an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Cliff
held many offices. He served on the church council, taught Sunday school and was
a Luther League advisor for many years. He also enjoyed serving as the church
custodian for 12 years. He served on the county committee for Pheasants Forever
for several years, receiving two special awards in the last two years and in
2004, Pheasants Forever auctioned the Iowa Print of the Year in his honor for
cancer research. Cliff enjoyed spending time outdoors, working with trees,
landscaping, golfing, fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.
He also enjoyed having a garden and his pumpkin patch, harvesting and selling
pumpkins to local families, which in turn made him the local "Pumpkin Man."
Cliff was active in the Radcliffe Golf Course, serving on the board, tree
committee for many years, and later working in the clubhouse.
Survivors
include his wife Jackie; children and grandchildren Jeff and wife Tammy
Maakestad, Joey, Jay, Dana and Jill; Janelle and husband David Norem, Josh and
Kris; Jon and wife Annette Maakestad, Mark and Rachel, all of Radcliffe; Jim and
wife Wendy Maakestad, Trent, Seth, James, Jake and Jakota of Hubbard; and Sherri
and husband Tim Engel, Jacob and Sarah of Story City; brothers Duane and wife
Mabel of Radcliffe, and Bud and wife Marge of Ames; sisters-in-law Nellie and
husband Orlan Mossman of Hubbard, and Darlene McClenathan of Deep River;
brother-in-law Duane Popejoy of Flippin, Ark.; along with many nieces, nephews,
aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and sister, a sister-in-law
and two brothers-in-law.

GENEVA - Kathleen Elizabeth O'Brien,
92, of Geneva died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the USA Healthcare in Mason City.
Mass of Christian Burial services will be Thursday, Nov. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at St.
Mary's Catholic Church in Ackley with burial in St. Mark Catholic Cemetery in
Iowa Falls. Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 5 until 7 p.m. with
a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. at the Linn's Funeral Home Chapel in Ackley.
Kathleen was born
July 18, 1912, in Iowa Falls, the daughter of John and Sarah (Convery) Thines.
She graduated from Chapin Consolidated School, attended art classes in Chicago,
Ill., and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College.
On Jan. 8, 1938, she was united in marriage to William John O'Brien at St.
Patrick's Church in Hampton. Kathleen was a free lance artist in Chicago, a
teacher in Chapin and served as United States Postmaster in Chapin and in later
years in Geneva. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Geneva and
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ackley. She was a member of the Iowa Branch of the
National League of Postmasters and the National Association of Retired Federal
Employees and she served as Franklin County vice chairman for the Democratic
party.
Kathleen is
survived by her daughter, Mary Pat Cole and husband Gene; son Mike O'Brien and
wife Mary; daughter-in-law Marianne O'Brien; grandchildren Tom Gilles and wife
Laurie, Michele O'Brien Elliot and husband Joe, and Danielle, Kelly, Jill, John
and Matthew O'Brien; great-granddaughter Grace Gilles; sister Mary Dugan and
husband Dwight; and many cousins and friends.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her husband; daughter Kathleen; son Maurice; sister
Eleanor and husband Walt; and brother-in-law Monsignor Roger O'Brien.

Mary was born
July 7, 1933, in Hampton, the daughter of Lawrence and Doris (Shroyer) Clay. She
attended Hampton High School and on June 15, 1957, she was united in marriage
with Dwight "Bud" Schulz in Hampton. Mary was a homemaker and a member of
Hampton United Methodist Church. She belonged to the Red Hat Society and the
Mother's Club, and she enjoyed monthly coffees with the class of 1951 and
spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Survivors
include two daughters, Janet Jensen and husband Larry of Ankeny and Julie Wilson
and husband Bart of Cresco; son Steve Schulz and wife Cathie of Carroll; two
brothers, Tom Clay and wife Pat of Reno, Nev., and Don Clay and wife Kae of
Hampton; sister-in-law Doris Knueppel and husband Orval of Hampton; and six
grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one infant son, David.

D. McLeland, 68, of Bode passed away Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at his home. Funeral
services were Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode with the
Rev. Paul Breddin officiating. Interment followed in the St. Olaf Cemetery.
Carrol was
born April 8, 1936, in Stockport, the son of Harry and Blanche McLeland. He was
raised and educated in the Stockport area and following his graduation, he
served four years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Europe. From there he
lived in Des Moines. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier
supervisor until accepting the position of postmaster in Iowa Falls. From 1989
until 1991, he served as postmaster in Fenton, Mo., in the St. Louis area, until
becoming the postmaster in Fort Dodge. In 1995, Carrol retired from the Postal
Service and he and his wife, Sharon, made their home in Bode. In his retirement,
Carrol remained active as a bus driver for the Twin River Valley School
District, and served as mayor of Bode from 1998 until 2003. He was a very
involved in his community. Carrol was a past member of the Elks Club in Iowa
Falls, and had served as the vice president of the United Way in Fort Dodge. He
loved his grandchildren, traveling, the Iowa Hawkeyes and playing golf.
Survivors
include his wife, Sharon of Bode; his children and their spouses, Brent McLeland
of Idaho, Rhonda and David Ebbert of Savage, Minn., Troy McLeland of Colorado,
Mike McLeland and fiancee Jennifer Svoboda of St. Louis, Mo., and Jeff and
Maggie McLeland of St. Louis; and six grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his stepson; and two brothers.

Alverson, 74, of Eldora, formerly of Iowa Falls, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at
the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center.Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 2, at
the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Davis of the
First Christian Church officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery in
Franklin County.
Carl was born
Aug. 30, 1930, in Corydon, the son of William and Eva (Streck) Alverson. He
attended the Alden Community Schools. He served with the U.S. Army from 1953 to
1957 during the Korean Conflict. On Dec. 7, 1965, he was united in marriage to
Elva Mae Argotsinger in Cedar Rapids. He was employed by Neely Farms for many
years, retiring due to his health.
There are no
immediate survivors.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Margaret Alverson; and
one brother, William Alverson.

Betty was
born April 13, 1937, in Mason City, the daughter of Vincent and Bessie (Tyson)
Harty.

Falls, and Patricia Evans of Torrance, Calif.; two brothers, Richard Harty of
Mason City and David Harty of Clive; and many nieces and nephews.
She was

officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley. Military

Ackley. Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 7, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Sietsema
Funeral Home in Ackley. Family will be present to greet guests.
Kenneth was
born May 26, 1929, in Ackley, the son of Paul and Florence (Geerdes) Heetland.
He attended country school near Ackley and graduated from Ackley High School in
1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force. On Jan. 17, 1964, he was united in
marriage with Laurabell Fink in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Kenneth was a
farmer.

include two daughters, Jolene Pieters and husband Kevin of Steamboat Rock and
Teresa Willems and husband Gary of Ackley; three sons, Clark Muller and wife
Tammy of Issaquah, Wash., David Muller and wife Jann of Camdenton, Mo., and
Steven Muller and wife Karen of St. Louis, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Harms of Wellsburg; and three brothers,
Virgil Heetland and Gordon Heetland, both of Ackley, and Elmer Heetland of Iowa

He was

Duane Otto Anderson, 77, died of natural causes Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at his
home in Hampton. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the

Duane was
born June 29, 1927, in Hampton to Otto and Pearl (Stahler) Anderson. He
graduated from Hampton High School and served his country during World War II in
the Navy. On July 28, 1946, he was united in marriage with Leila Walker in
Austin, Minn. Duane worked for the Department of Transportation for 35 years,
drove a school bus for Hampton community schools for 10 years, and was an
auxiliary police officer for the Hampton Police Department for 20 years. Duane
was a member of the Church of Christ and the American Legion, both of Hampton.
Survivors
include two sons, Michael and wife Kathryn of Hampton and Richard and wife Marti
of Albert Lea, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Tudy and husband Gene Brass and Jean
Connelly, all of Hampton; grandsons Corey and Jamie Anderson; granddaughter
Angela Huntington and husband Troy; great-grandchildren Quinn and Calvin
Anderson; and his very special friend, Leola Johansen.
He was

Harold Weichers, 87, of Wellsburg died at his home from natural causes while
under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. Funeral services
were Monday, Nov. 8, at St. John Lutheran Church in Wellsburg with the Rev.
Bruce Zimmerman officiating. Burial followed at the Wellsburg Reformed Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Harold was
born Jan. 28, 1917, in Shiloh Township, the son of Dick and Malena (Molendorp)
Weichers. He attended country school in rural Wellsburg. On Jan. 15, 1941, he
was united in marriage to Lillie Eygabroad in Marshalltown. Harold was a World
War II veteran serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He lived in the Wellsburg
area his entire life and was self-employed, operating a trucking and corn
shelling business. He was a horse enthusiast and enjoyed attending horse shows.
Survivors
include three sons, Gordon Weichers and wife Karen of Steamboat Rock, Craig
Weichers and wife Mary of Albuquerque, N.M. and Kent Weichers and wife Karen of
Grundy Center; three daughters, Sally Nevenhoven and husband Ron of Aplington,
Sherri Wessels and husband Dick of Fairfax and Camelia Weichers of Cedar Rapids;
three sisters, Nettie Huisman of Ackley, Edna Kreb of Waterloo and Mildred
Weichers of Grundy Center; and 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four sisters, Anna Rindles, Grace
Freese, Rena Huisman and Leone Hopkins; four brothers, John, Conrad, Lester and
Dale Weichers; and grandchildren Denise and Leisha Aukes.

Rev. Calvin Thomas Schnucker, 99, of Mesa, Ariz., died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at
a care center in Mesa of natural causes. A memorial service was held Thursday,
Nov. 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington with the Rev. Robert
Schnucker, the Rev. Greg Smith and the Rev. Sarai Beckwith officiating.
Inurnment followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, also in Aplington. Memorials may
be directed to the family.
Calvin was
born Nov. 26, 1904, in German Valley, Ill., the son of George Melchior and Emma
Goeldner Schnucker. In 1922 Calvin graduated from the Pleasant Prairie Academy
in German Valley. On Jan. 1, 1928, he married Wilhelmine Meyer of Aplington. In
June of 1929, he graduated with a B.A. in education from Iowa State Teachers
College and in 1932 he received the Bachelor of Divinity degree from New
Brunswick Seminary. After graduation he served the Ramsey Reformed Church at
Titonka from 1932 until 1942 when he was called to be professor of Rural Church
at the Dubuque Theological Seminary. From 1936 until 1946 he was the executive
secretary of the Iowa Christian Rural Fellowship. In 1956 Calvin became the Dean
of the Seminary, a position he held until he retired in 1970. Calvin was also
instrumental in an important ecumenical education experiment involving Wartburg
Theological Seminary, Dubuque Seminary, the Aquinas Institute and the University
of Iowa School of Religion. Upon his retirement to Glendale Gultch in Colorado,
he researched its history and wrote a chap-book on the history of Left-Hand
Canyon. He was a member of a number of groups including the Council of
Theological Education of the United Presbyterian Church, USA which presented him
its Distinguished Service Award in 1970, the Yacht Club of Dubuque, a deputy for
the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and Sigma Tau Delta. Although he began his
ministry as a member of the Reformed Church in America, he ended honorably
retired as a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
Calvin is
survived by his two daughters, Florence Van Wagner of Rocheport, Mo., and Joyce
May of Apache Junction, Ariz., and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his wife, Wilhelmine, two sisters and five brothers.

FALLS - James J. Maddy, 82, of Iowa Falls died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at the

Jim was born
March 28, 1922, to James Sr. and Bertha (Lake) Maddy in Russell. He graduated
from high school in Fonda and spent many years farming with his father. They
also started an auction barn there. Jim married Betty Hayes, whom he later
divorced. He served in the Navy during World War II. Jim also worked for
American Beef Producers of Sioux City, and United Marketing of St. Paul, Minn.
On Jan. 1, 1984, he married Janice M. Lentsch. The couple lived in rural Clare
and started J&J Livestock Marketing. When Jim's health failed, the couple moved
to Iowa Falls to be closer to family and friends.
Jim is
survived by his wife, Janice; his daughters, Nancy Barlow and husband Jim of
Woodland Park, Colo. and Jaci Jones and husband Mike of Fort Dodge; his son,
David Lentsch and wife Patti of Iowa Falls; 13 grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
He was
preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence Maddy.

Berniece Genora Rodemeyer, 90, of Hampton died of natural causes Friday, Nov. 5,
2004, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 8 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton
with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen officiating. Burial followed in the Hampton
Cemetery.
Berniece was
born April 9, 1914, in rural Kensett, the daughter of Albert and Amanda (Roslien)
Holstad. Berniece attended Worth County country schools and on Jan. 18, 1947,
she was united in marriage with Edward Rodemeyer in Joice. She was a homemaker
on the family farm in rural Hampton. Berniece was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church and was active in the Martha Circle, the Lutheran Woman's Missionary
League and the Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary. She taught Sunday school and
was a 4-H leader. Berniece loved being with family and friends and enjoyed
quilting, reading and taking care of her plants.

include two daughters, Mary Jane Rodemeyer of Hampton and Lois Ahrens and
husband Bruce of Iowa City; one son, James E. Rodemeyer and wife Sherry of
Waterloo; three sisters, Orla Nelson and husband Gordon of Joice, and Marcella
Picken and husband Don and Lorette Kroneman and husband Merle, all of Mason
City; two brothers, Arnold Holstad and wife Amy of Mesa, Ariz. and Harlan
Holstad and wife Virginia of Hampton; six grandchildren, Abe, Ben and Sarah
Rodemeyer and Matthew, Michael and Marcus Ahrens; and one great-grandson, Luke
Rodemeyer.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; one brother, Sophus
Holstad; and two sisters, Alva Reetz and Lorraine Abertus.

Ernest Paul Houck, 92, of Radcliffe passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the
Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 8, at
St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe with the Rev. Dana Williams
officiating. Burial followed at the Radcliffe Cemetery.
Ernest was
born on Aug. 11, 1912, in Radcliffe, the son of Sylvester and Amy (Luscombe
Baldwin) Houck. He graduated from Radcliffe Public School in 1929 and attended
Iowa State College in Ames. On May 27, 1933, Ernie was united in marriage to
Rozella Egland in Rockford, Ill. They made their home in Radcliffe. Ernie
farmed, operated Houck Dairy and operated corn shelling, trucking and custom
baling businesses. They began wintering in Texas over 35 years ago. Ernie was a
lifelong member of St. John's United Methodist Church of Radcliffe, a 50-year
member of the Radcliffe Fire Department and a 50 plus-year member of the Elks
Club in Iowa Falls. He served on city council and the park board. He was on the
board of directors of the Farmer's Co-op Elevator and Security State Bank of
Radcliffe. He was also a member of the K-9 Campers Club.
Survivors
include one daughter, Marlene Helling and husband Jim of Mason City; one son,
Gary Houck and wife Rita of Radcliffe; one daughter-in-law, Judy Houck of
Radcliffe; 11 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ann
Houck of Radcliffe; along with many other relatives and friends.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Paul; three brothers,
Harold Baldwin, Marion Baldwin and Roy Houck; and one sister, Elsie Hanson.

Helen Glee Abkes, 94, of Ackley died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at the
Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 5, at the
Christian Reformed Church in Austinville with burial in the Austinville
Cemetery.
Helen was
born May 17, 1910, in Bennett, the daughter of Fred and Pearle (Westfall)
Sherwood. She graduated from Tipton High School and attended Tipton Junior
College. On Oct. 20, 1933, she was united in marriage with Herman C. Abkes in
Chicago, Ill. Helen was a homemaker and taught at Cedar County School. She was a
member of the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville.
Survivors
include seven nieces, Myrma Gomez and husband Frank and Judy Hurst and husband
Peter, all of Monclaire, Calif., Carol Watters of Parkersburg, Gretchen Brewer
of Butler, Mo., Dorane Coulter of Hazelwood, N.C., Jolene Huseby of Brookesville,
Fla., and Audrey Abkes of Arlington, Wash.; two nephews, Bob Abkes and wife
Elizabeth of Austinville and Wendall Abkes of Parkersburg; many great-nieces and

Virgil Jones, 82, of Waverly, formerly of Milford, Spirit Lake and Iowa Falls,
passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the Waverly Health Center. A memorial

Janesville. Private family inurnment followed at the Northlawn Memory Gardens in
Iowa Falls with military honors bestowed by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion

Virgil was
born May 3, 1922, in Alden, the son of Thomas C. and Edna M. (Springer) Jones.
He attended the Alden Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1939. He
served with the U.S. Army with the 40th Division Field Artillery during World
War II. On May 14, 1948, he was united in marriage to Audre LaNora Harris at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union two children were born: Malinda and
Martin. Virgil enjoyed many different vocations and most recently was a baker
for the Spirit Lake Bakery and maintenance engineer at Crescent Beach Lodge in
Okoboji.
Virgil is
survived by his wife, Audre of Waverly; his daughter, Malinda Foelske and
husband Daryl of Cedar Falls; his son Martin Jones and wife Susan of Iowa Falls;
two grandchildren, Eric and Brett Foelske, both of Iowa City; his mother-in-law,
Dora Ward of Spirit Lake; and a sister-in-law, Dorathy Mitchell of Spirit Lake.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Burl and Doris
Jones; and one brother-in-law, Emory Harris.

Ray was born
Nov. 18, 1921, in Dows, the son of Oscar Lorenzo and Sarah Jane (Parks)
Crandall. He attended Franklin County country schools and served in the U.S.
Army during World War II. On Nov. 30, 1945, he was united in marriage with
Lucille Peyton at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Ray worked as a finish
carpenter in the Hampton area, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Hampton
United Methodist Church, the Hampton American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars
and Disabled American Veterans. Ray enjoyed gardening, cribbage, cards,
woodworking and walking with his wife, Lucille.
Survivors
include two sons, Chuck and wife Normal Sweet of Norman, Okla. and Mike Crandall
of Fort Dodge; daughter Jean Wolfe and husband Steven of Coralville;
daughter-in-law Cheryl Crandall of Hampton; and nine grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren.

Pansy M. Gaither, 79, of Hampton died of natural causes at her home Friday, Nov.

Hampton Cemetery.
Pansy was
born Dec. 17, 1924, in Hampton to Orin James and Matilda Esther (Freeman)
Gamble. She attended Hampton High School. On Oct. 9, 1949, she was united in
marriage to Ray M. Gaither in Hampton. Pansy was a cook, working at the Gold Key
Restaurant, and she owned and operated Pansy's Kum Bak Cafe in Dumont. She was
then a cook at the Hampton Health Care Center. Pansy was a member of Hampton
United Methodist Church and was involved in the Franklin General Hospital
Auxiliary and the Methodist Women's Circle. She enjoyed traveling, going on bus
trips and spending time with her family.

include many nieces and nephews.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray; a son, Kenneth; three
brothers, Orin, James and Harry; and two sisters, Doris Hanna and Lucinda

Robert L. Dickenson, 66, of rural Union died at his home from natural causes
Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, while under the care of Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral
services were Friday, Nov. 19, at the First United Methodist Church in Eldora
with the Rev. Douglas Harding officiating. Burial followed in Sheppard Cemetery
in rural Union with military honors provided by Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the
American Legion and Roll-Harless Post No. 3974 of the VFW. A memorial fund has

Robert was
born Oct. 16, 1938, in Gifford, the son of Adrian Charles and Jacquelyn Jane
(Wilson) Dickenson. He graduated from Eldora High School in 1956 and enlisted in
the U.S. Navy in 1958, where he served his country as a Radarman 2nd Class. On
Nov. 15, 1959, he was united in marriage to Iva Newby at Gifford United
Methodist Church. Robert worked at Eagle Feeds and Ag Supply, and as a truck
driver at Pine Lake Lumber. He was a member of Gifford United Methodist Church,
the Harry Crow Post No. 255 of the American Legion, the South Hardin Recreation
Area. Robert enjoyed bowling and was a league secretary for over 20 years and
played in 18 national tournaments. He also loved golfing, the outdoors, hunting
and fishing.
Survivors
include his wife, Iva, of rural Union; three sons, Steven of El Cajon, Calif.,
Jeffrey of Vancouver, Wash., and Dennis of Eldora; one daughter, Susan Travis
and husband Richard of Eldora; two grandchildren, Jacob and Jennifer Travis; one
brother, David and wife Joanne of Owasa; one sister, Judy Martin of Eldora; and
one sister-in-law, Barb Dickenson of Gifford.

Jr. in Glenville, Minn. Patricia worked for Lindaman-Mott Memorial Company in
Iowa Falls, retiring in August 2003. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic
Church.

America.

Lyle was born
July 20, 1956, in Clarion, the eldest son of Wendell and Mary Hahn Steiner. He
was a 1974 graduate of Clarion High School. On May 27, 1978, he was united in
marriage with Kollene Marilyn Morgan, also of Clarion. Lyle had many occupations
over the years, including car and insurance sales, bus driver, carpenter and
farmer. He loved to sing and spent many years with the Choralaires of Clarion,
and then with the Sacred Sounds Gospel quartet. He was an EMT in Clarion, a 4-H
leader in Ellsworth and a Community Club member in New Providence. He loved
animals, working with his hands and his family and friends.
Lyle is
survived by his wife, Kollene, of New Providence; three sons, Martin and wife
Angela of Eldora, and Jason and Joel of New Providence; two daughters, Holly of
Ames and Andrea of New Providence; his mother, Mary of Woolstock; a brother,
Robin and wife Rebecca of Clarion; and a sister-in-law, Loralie Ashton and
husband Jack of Moore, Okla.
He was
preceded in death by his father and an infant son, Ryan Daniel.

and trips to the casino. He was a member of the UAW Local No. 893.
Clyde is
survived by his three sons, Steve of Story City, Gregg of Minnesota and Lynn of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Donna and husband Don Lou of Alabama; two
brothers, David of Des Moines and Joe of Union; a sister, Phyllis Harris of
southern Iowa; and nine grandchildren.

Carolyn Mauline Knock, 83, of Parkersburg died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at home
from complications of cancer.
Funeral
services were Wednesday, Nov. 24, at the First Congregational Church in
Parkersburg with the Rev. Paul Shaedig officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill
Cemetery, Parkersburg.
Carolyn was
born March 6, 1921, north of Parkersburg, the daughter of August and Tillie (Fleshner)
Nicklaus. She graduated from Parkersburg High School and attended Teacher's
College in Cedar Falls. Carolyn was united in marriage with Markley Knock on
June 15, 1940, in the Congregational Church in Parkersburg. After their
marriage, the couple farmed, then in 1955, they started a redimix company known
as Parkersburg Ready Mix. They opened Knock's Sand and Gravel northwest of
Clarksville in 1962. In 1968, they started Knock's Building Supply which they
operated until Markley became ill. Carolyn kept the books for the business for
many years. Carolyn was a life-long member of the First Congregational Church
where she had taught Sunday School. In the past she enjoyed singing in the
church choir. She belonged to the Ladies Guild at the church.
She is
survived by five sons, David and wife Joyce of Des Moines, Kenneth and wife
Ranae of Parkersburg, Michael of Allison, Russell and wife Joan of Cedar Falls
and Don and wife Cindy of Ames; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and
a brother, Delbert Nicklaus and wife Karen of Iowa City.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandchild, Sydney Knock; and a
brother.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg was in charge of the arrangements.

Elmer Albert Korte, 80, of Madrid died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at the Madrid
Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 24, at the First
Reformed Church in Aplington with the Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Interment
was in Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg.
Elmer was
born Aug. 1, 1924, in Elkton, Minn., the son of Albert John and Jennie (Harms)
Korte. He received his education in various schools, including Parkersburg.
Elmer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Sept. 2, 1944, he was
united in marriage with Gladyce Riekena in Dumont, while on leave. He received
his high school diploma with his class of 1944 while serving in the Navy. The
couple made their home in Traer where Elmer was a truck driver and a printer.
Survivors
include three sons, Karl and wife Ruthanne of Truro, Keith Korte of Des Moines
and Kurtis and wife Sue of Tennessee; three daughters, Karla Schlesselman and
husband Don of Williamsburg, Karmen Inman and husband Doug of Des Moines and
Kayleen Taylor of Truro; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one
brother, John of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two sisters, Frances Eilderts of Aplington
and Marian Bietelman of Monticello, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Christina Korte
of Dumont.
He was
preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter; two brothers; and a sister.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington was in charge of the arrangements.

ELDORA -
Idella Loewen, 86, of Eldora died from natural causes Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at
the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard. Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 27,
at 10:30 a.m. at the First Assembly of God in Eldora with the Rev. Fred
Rosenkrans officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora.
Idella was
born Feb. 15, 1918, in Eldora, the daughter of Walter "Ray" and Clarissa "Merne"
(Johnson) Trout. On Feb. 21, 1936, she was united in marriage to Raphael "Ray"
Loewen in Marshalltown. They lived in Steamboat Rock for a short time prior to
moving to Hutchinson and Liberal, Kan., for several years during the war while
Ray worked on the air base. She returned to Eldora in 1947 and was employed by
Vinton Produce and then later worked for Infantseat Company, retiring in 1968.
She attended the First Assembly of God during her later years. Idella enjoyed
gardening, listening to country music and doing ceramics and crafting, as well
as collecting records, salt and pepper shakers, figurines and porcelain dolls.
Survivors
include her son, Ronald Loewen and wife Karon of Colorado Springs, Colo.;
daughter-in-law Betty Loewen and sister Maggie Monroe, both of Eldora; and nine
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her son, Richard Loewen; one sister,
Shirley Smith; three brothers, Harold, Keith and Willard Trout; and one
grandson, Adam Loewen.

Dean Carl Dedrich Rodemeyer, 75, of Hampton died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at
Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 29,
at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton with the Rev. Karl
Bollhagen officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Friends may call
Sunday, Nov. 28, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton.
Dean was born
Nov. 26, 1929, in rural Hampton, the son of Paul and Alma Pralle Rodemeyer. He
attended Hampton Community Schools and on June 15, 1952, was united in marriage
with Ellen Rushing Catherall in Hampton. Dean was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church and worked as a farmer, a carpenter and the church custodian. He enjoyed
going fishing.
Survivors
include his wife, Ellen, of Hampton; three sons, Tim and wife Pat and Dan and
wife Lu, all of Hampton, and Eric and wife Michelle of Breezy Point, Minn.; two
daughters, Nancy Schmidt and husband Dan of Des Moines and Kerri Luhring and
husband Rod of Latimer; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, one granddaughter and two
sisters.
